TREAD SEPARATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. CLEAR HIGHWAY. NO ROAD HAZARD INVOLVED. SEPARATION WAS IMMEDIATE AND INVOLVED CENTER TREAD/ENTIRE TIRE. ADDITIONAL DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE TREAD CATCHING/FOLDING FACTORY INSTALLED MUD FLAP OVER THE TOP OF BOTH REAR DUAL TIRES. DAMAGE INCURRED TO WHEEL WELL/FENDER FRAME. WHEN PUMP FAILS THERE IS A TOTAL LOSS OF ALL BRAKING AND THIS HAPPENS WITH NO WARNING. *AK
REAR AXLE WHEELS CAME OFF AND COULD HAVE ROLLED IN SOMEONES PATH AND CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. *AK
STEERING WHEEL SHAKES AND MAKES NOISE WHEN TURNING IT. *AK BEARINGS FAILURE CAUSED STEERING WHEEL HARD TO TURN AND ON OCCASSION LOCKS IT. *YH
SPEEDOMETER DROPPED TO ZERO, THEN THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT FROM LOW GEAR! *AK
THE PLANETARY GEAR FAILED WHILE DRIVING. IT COMPLETELY DISCENTRATED INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION. A LOCAL FORD DEALER REBUILT TRANSMISSION, BUT NOW, WHEN THE TRUCK IS WARMED UP AND THE TRANSMISSION IS HOT, WHEN YOU ENGAGE REVERSE IT TAKES OFF ON ITS OWN. I HAVE TO HOLD IT BACK WITH THE BRAKE AND IT EVENTUALLY STALLS. THIS HAS HAPPENED REPEATEDLY. *AK

THE ENGINE TOTALLY CUTS OFF LEAVING THE TRUCK INOPERABLE. AT FIRST IT WOULD CRANK BACK INSTANTLY. NOW, WE HOPE TO MAKE IT OFF THE ROAD WHERE WE HAVE TO REPEATEDLY TRY TO GET IT CRANKED. NUMEROUS MECHANICS HAVE TRIED AND FAILED TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. *AK
PE00040; ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON 1996, FORD E350, ON 1997 COACHMEN WITH DUAL REAR TIRES,FIRESTONE STEELTEX RADIAL R4S LT225/75R16, DOT VD1L1XB156. ON AUGUST 28, 2000, WHILE DRIVING THERE WAS A VIBRATION. CONSUMER PULLED OVER DUE TO PASSENGER'S FRONT TIRE TREAD COMING OFF, ABOUT 18 INCHES LONG WHICH ALMOST CAUSED A CRASH WITH 49,000 MILES ON VEHICLE. ON OCTOBER 3, 2000, WHILE DRIVING THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE, DRIVER'S REAR INSIDE TIRE TREAD COMPLETELY CAME OFF WITH 51,000 MILES ON VEHICLE. FIRESTONE SAID THAT THEY WOULD PRORATE THE TIRES. I AM VERY DILIGENT ABOUT CHECKING THE AIR PRESSURE IN MY TIRES. I DO NOT DRIVE OVER THE SPEED LIMIT, USUALLY AROUND 60 MPH ON INTERSTATES. FORTUNATELY MY TRUCK IS A DUAL WHEEL PICKUP AND IT WAS ONE OF THE DUALS THAT HAD THE SIDEWALL BLOWOUT. I WAS HAULING A HORSE TRAILER AT THE TIME. AT 15000 MILES, FIRESTONE TIRES WERE REPLACED DUE TO A RECALL, NOW, 30000 MILES LATER CONSUMER HAD TO REPLACED THE FIRESTONE STEELTEX TIRES P235/85R16 DUE TO TIRES CAUSING FRONT END TO WOBBLE AND EXPERIENCE VIBRATION, DEALER STATED THE BELTS WERE COMING APART. CONSUMER HAD REPLACED THE LEFT UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS DUE TO FROND END SNAPPING SOUDN AND WOBBLE, CONSUMER WONDERS IF THE PROBLEM THE WHOLE TIME WAS WITH THE TIRES. *SLC

WHILE ON A TRIP TREAD SEPARATED ON 2 CONTINENTAL/GENERAL TIRES. VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED.*AK
WAS TRAVELING 35MPH AND STARTED TO SLOW DOWN TO MAKE A TURN APPLIED BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, VEHICLE DID NOT STOP. VEHICLE REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. NEITHER DRIVER'S NOR PASSENGER'S AIRBAG DEPLOYED. NO INJURIES.*AK
TIRE BLEW OUT. AMBIENT TEMERATURES WERE HOT. TIRES HAD LIKE NEW RUBBER ON ALL WHEELS. I REPLACED ALL TIRES ON TRUCK. THIS WAS BEFORE THE RECALL ON THE EXPLORERS AND THE TIRES WERE NOT THE SAME TYPES AS THE CURRENT RECALL. BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD GOOD LUCK WITH FIRESTONE TIRES. (I HAD THE NATIONAL 500'S THAT WERE RECALLED YEARS AGO) I WAS TOWING MY 16,500# TRAILER WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND DID NOT WANT TO TAKE A CHANCE.( DOT NUMBER: UNKNOWN TIRE SIZE: UNKNOWN )
TIRE HAD 9/32" TREAD. BLEW OUT SIDEWALL AND PEELED TREAD @ 60 MPH WITH AMBIENT TEMPERATURE OF ABOUT 95 DEGREES. TIRES WERE ALL PROPERLY INFLATED 2 DAYS BEFORE TRIP. I WAS TOWING MY RV AT THE TIME. FAILED TIRE WAS PART OF A SET OF DUALS.( DOT NUMBER: VNOP1WV256 TIRE SIZE: 215/85R16 )
PE00 040; CONSUMR WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 55MPH ON HIGHWAY AND FELT VIBRATION INSIDE OF VEHICLE. WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE SHOULDER. RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE TREAD SEPARATED, STEEL COILS WERE SHOWING ON ALL FOUR TIRES. TIRES WERE FIRESTONE, STEELTEX RADIAL #AT, P23585R16. *AK
WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH BRAKE LIGHT STARTED TO FLICKER ON/OFF. CONSUMER ATTEMPTED TO SLOW DOWN BY PRESSING BRAKES, BUT AUTOMOBILE WAS NOT ABLE TO STOP. CONSUMER HAD TO USE BOTH FEET TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL DOWN. EFFECT OF THIS WAS THAT CONSUMER WAS UNABLE TO STOP W/O WARNING, AND WAS PRONE TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. *AK

THE TREAD ON THE TIRES SEPARATED FROM THE BODY OF THE TIRES, THE TIRES WERE STILL UNDER WARRANTY BUT WOULD HAVE COST MORE TO REPLACE UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE THE DEALER WAS SELLING THE TIRES CHEAPER THAN THE CONSUMER COULD BUY THEM IF HE MADE A WARRANTY CLAIM, CONSUMER PURCHASED DIFFERENT BRAND AND REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT (FIRESTONE STEELTEX LT2358516). TREAD PARTIALLY SEPARATED AND INTERNAL BELTS SHIFTED. I NO LONGER HAVE THESE TIRES ON THE VEHICLE, WERE REPLACED WITH MICHELIN AFTER THIS INCIDENT. *AK( DOT NUMBER: TIRE SIZE: 235/75R16 )
AT APPROXIMATELY 27,000 MILES, MY WIFE AND I DECIDED TO GO ON VACATION. WE LOADED THE TRUCK WITH OUR CAMPER (ABOUT 1800 POUNDS), SOME LUGGAGE AND SUPPLIES (ABOUT 250 POUNDS), AND A SMALL TRAILER FOR HAULING WOOD (LOADED ABOUT 3500 POUNDS). BEFORE WE LEFT, I INFLATED THE TIRES TO THE SIDEWALL RATING MAXIMUM OF 80 PSI. ABOUT 300 MILES INTO OUR TRIP WE HAD A BLOWOUT ON THE LEFT REAR TIRE. UPON INVESTIGATION, I FOUND THAT THE TIRES' TREAD HAD SEPERATED FROM THE CARCASS WHICH THEN CAUSED THE SIDEWALL TO OVERHEAT AND RUPTURE. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE OTHER TIRES TO DATE. I E-MAILED FORD WITH THIS QUERY, FORD RESPONDED BY SUGGESTING THAT I E-MAIL THE NHTSA WITH MY INFORMATION. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE JUMPS AND SHIFTS HARD. WHEN COMING TO A STOP AND DOWNSHIFTING, VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD. CONSUMER HAD TO KEEP FEET ON THE BRAKES. *AK
THE ACCELERATOR HAS MALFUNCTIONED 3 TIMES, LEAVING ME AND MY PASSENGERS STRANDED AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS. THE TRUCK WILL START BUT THERE IS NO RESPONSE OF THE ENGINE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE. IT IS A "FLY BY WIRE" SYSTEM WHICH HAS NO DIRECT MECHANICAL LINKAGE FROM THE PEDAL TO THE ENGINE AND THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY HAS NOW BEEN REPLACED TWICE. THE FIRST TIME WAS AT 30374 MILES ON 7/23/98 AND NOW AGAIN AT 47801 MILES ON 10/13/99. THIS IS NOT A COMPONENT SUBJECT TO ABUSE AND I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT BUT I STILL HAD TO PAY $100. DEDUCTABLE ON THE LAST REPLACEMENT.
THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSING A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. PREVIOUSLY, DLR REPAIR THE TRANSMISSION UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE PROBLEM STILL OCCURS. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER INFORMATION AND VIN#. *AK
I HAVE A TWO YEAR OLD F350 POWERTRUCK DIESEL AND THE TRANSMISSION HAS GONE OUT OF IT AT 49,000 MILES. IT IS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE POOR QUALITY WORKMANSHIP/DESIGN WHEN I SPEND OVER $30,000 DOLLARS FOR A VEHICLE AND THE TRANSMISSION GOES OUT OF IT BEFORE 50,000 MILES. I NEVER TOW OVER 6,000 LBS WITH THIS VEHICLE AND HAVE ONLY COMPLETED TWO TRIPS IN EXCESS OF 200 MILES. ALL OTHER TRIPS ARE UNDER 100 MILES. THE FORD DEALER SAID THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP IF I COULD PROVIDE ALL RECEIPTS SHOWING I HAD THE REQUIRED MAINTENANCE COMPLETED. I GENERALLY SERVICE ALL VEHICLES MYSELF AND HAVE LITTLE OR NO RECEIPTS. WHEN I DID HAVE A REPUTABLE COMPANY DO MY MAINTENANCE THEY WERE AND ARE UNABLE TO LOCATE THE APPROPRIATE INFORMATION IN THEIR DATA BASE. FORD WANTS TO PUT A REMANUFACTURED OR REBUILD BACK IN AT MY EXPENSE AND I FEEL THIS IS COMPLETELY WRONG AND I BOUGHT A VEHICLE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN BUILT MUCH BETTER. I HAVE HAD TWO OF THESE FIRESTONE STEEL TEX R4S TIRES "BLOW OUT" WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE WITH MY FAMILY. THE FIRST ONE WAS IN AUGUST OF 1999 IN OHIO ON A WARM, BUT NOT HOT DAY. WE WERE DRIVING ALONG AND BOOM IT WENT. FORTUNATELY, IT WAS ONE OF THE REAR DUEL TIRES AND NOT A FRONT TIRE. I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND GET IT SAFELY STOPPED. FIRESTONE REPLACED THIS TIRE. THE OTHER WAS IN MARCH OF 1999 ON A COOL DAY IN INDIANA. WE WERE DRIVING AND GOT A TERRIBLE SHIMMY AND THE VEHICLE BECAME DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. SUDDENLY, BOOM, ANOTHER REAR DUEL TIRE WENT. I AGAIN MANAGED TO GET IT OFF THE ROAD AND GOT IT CHANGED. FIRESTONE WOULDN'T GIVE ME A NEW TIRE ON THIS ONE. THEY ALLOWED A REPLACEMENT VALUE. I AM DISGUSTED WITH FIRESTONE TIRES. LAST MARCH, BEFORE THE MEDIA ATTENTION TO THE PROBLEM, I HAD VOWED TO NEVER HAVE ANOTHER FIRESTONE TIRE ON MY VEHICLES. I SHUDDER TO THINK WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED IF ONE OF THE BLOWOUTS HAD BEEN A FRONT TIRE ON THIS 14,000 POUND VEHICLE. PLEASE PURSUE THIS WITH VIGOR. TRAVELING AT 50 MPH THE TRANSFER CASE LOCKED UP AND THE TRUCK SKIDDED OFF THE ROAD. DAMAGE TO FRONT END,ENGINE,TRANSMISSION. TRANSFER CASE REPLACED. FOUGHT TO GET TRANSMISSION REPLACED AS WELL. STILL FIGHTING TO GET FRONT END AND ENGINE DAMAGE REPAIRED. HAVE CONTACTED ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR THE STATE OF MAINE. HAS CONTACTED REPAIRING DEALERSHIP AS WELL AS SELLING DEALERSHIP. SHOULD HAVE SOME RESULTS SOON. WOULD ADVISE ALL CONSUMERS WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS OF DEALERSHIPS NOT STANDING BY THIER REPAIRS TO CONTACT ATTORNEY GENERAL IN THIER STATE FOR ASSISTANCE.
WHEN SHIFTING FROM SECOND GEAR TO THE DRIVE GEAR, ENGINE WILL UNEXPECTEDLY STALL. DEALERSHIP HAS EXAMINED VEHICLE TWO TIMES AND HAS FAILED TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. *AK CONSUMER ADDS ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUTS DOWN WHEN UPSHIFTING FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR GENERALLY ON INCLINE, WHEN ENGINE DIES THERE ARE NO BRAKES, NO POWER STEERING, AND THE VEHICLE THEN BECOMES UNCONTROLLABLE, VEHICLE IS PUT IN NEUTRAL TO RESTART ENGINE. *TT
MICHELIN TIRES MDW 4037XPSRIB SIDEWALLS HAVE READ BAD SPIDER CRACKS WHICH ARE GETTING WORSE EVERY DAY. WARRANTY ON THE TIRES HAD EXPIRED. WAS MADE 35-9S. THE MANUFACTUER WILL NOT HELP. MICHELIN WILL GIVE 3 TIRES, BUT NOT 4 & OWNER HAS 7 OF THOSE TIRES & WANTS THEM ALL REPLACED. *AK
VEHICLE LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE DUE TO STEERING FAILURE RESULTING IN COLLISION (OHIO TRAFFIC CRASH REPORT). MJS
FUEL SENSOR SWITCH IS LEAKING FUEL ONTO THE MANIFOLDS. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. MANUFACTURER WILL BE NOTIFIED. *AK
WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING VEHICLE WAS OVERHEATING. CONSUMER HAD VEHICLE IN DEALER SHOP FOR REPAIR SERVICE SEVEN TIMES, AND THE DEALER CAN'T DETERMINE THE CAUSE. HOWEVER , DEALER REPLACED THE ENGINE DUE TO A LEAKAGE. *AK
BOTH BRAKE ROTORS FOUND TO HAVE NUMEROUS HAIRLINE CRACKS AS WELL AS 2 LARGE CRACKS ONE EXCEEDING .5 INCHES IN WIDTH AN EXTENDING FROM HUB TO OUTER EDGE OF THE ROTOR. CAUSED SEVERE SHAKING AND NEAR UNCONTROLABLE STEERING. DEALERSHIP NOTIFIED AND UNCONCERNED WITH INCIDENT. *AK
CONSUMER WAS SLOWING DOWN FOR SHARP CURB & APPLIED BRAKES, FRONT WHEEL LOCKED UP. VEHICLE WENT OVER BANK OF HILL, HEADING TOWARD A LAKE & EVENTUALLY STOPPED SLIDING. DEALER AND CERTIFIED MECHANIC STATED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH IT. ROTORS SEEM TO BE WARPED. *AK FRONT WHEELS SQUEAL AND GRAB WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED, EXCESS DUST WAS FOUND IN REAR BRAKE DRUMS. DEALER STATED THAT FRONT END COULD NOT BE ALIGNED, AFTER MARKET COMBER BUSHINGS WERE INSTALLED ON VEHICLE WHICH WAS ABLE TO BE ALIGNED. *SLC
TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES RUBS ON THE EXHAUST DOWNPIPE FROM THE TURBO. THIS RUBBING HAS WORN THROUGH 3/4 OF THE TRANSMISSION COOLER LINE WITH A FAILURE, CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TO BE SPRAYED DIRECTLY ONTO THE TURBO DOWNPIPE. THIS IS FIRE/TRANSMISSION FAILURE MAJOR RISK. *AK

I HAVE HAD THREE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSIONS MODEL: (E-4OD). I NOW HAVE 48,000 ON MY TRUCK AND I NEED A FOURTH TRANSMISSION. THE PROBLEM CONSISTS OF POOR SHIFTING (HARD SHIFTS, UNTIMELY SHIFTING, SHIFTS INTO OD WHEN IT IS OFF, AND YOU MUST DEPRESS GAS PEDAL MODERATLEY TO PROCEED IN REVERSE) I REPORTED THIS PROBLEM INITIALLY ON NOV OF 98, AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION EACH TIME FREE OF CHARGE BUT THEY ONLY WOULD PUT A RE-MANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION IN IT DUE TO THEY MEET THE SAME SPECS. AS NEW TRANSMISSIONS. I HAD THE ENGINEER FROM FORD AT MY DEALERSHIP TWO WEEKS AGO AND HE FOUND NO PROBLEMS BUT THE TECHNICIAN THAT NORMALLY PROVIDES SERVICE ON MY TRUCK STATED IT WAS NOT ACTING UP FOR SOME REASON ON THAT DAY. I KNOW THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE PROBLEMS WITH THIS TRANSMISSION, (THE TOWN OF WALLKILL, NY DIAL-A-BUS HAS- I THINK OVER 80 REPLACEMENT E-4OD TRANSMISSIONS - IT IS ALSO SERVICED AT VILLAGE FORD) I HAVE ALSO FOUND OUT FROM OTHER F-SERIES DIESEL AUTOMATIC OWNERS THAT MANY HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THEIRS. I FEEL I HAVE HAD THE RUN-AROUND BY FORD AND I AM VERY DISSATISFIED WITH THIS VEHICLE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN AT DEALER 7 TIMES FOR BRAKE PROBLEMS. WHEN APPLYING BRAKES THERE WAS A GRINDING SOUND,LIKE METAL TO METAL. ALSO, EXTENDED BRAKING DISTANCE. DEALER DETERMINED THAT EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS NOT RELEASING PROPERLY, CAUSING DAMAGE TO BRAKE DRUMS. DRUMS HAVE BEEN REPLACED TWICE THUS FAR. DEALER CANNOT REMEDY PROBLEM WITH EMERGENCY BRAKE. *AK
TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING AND LOCKED UP. INCIDENT OCCURRED TWO TIMES. COULD NOT GO FORWARD OR REVERSE, IT DISENGAGED AND BECAME UNDRIVEABLE. COMPUTER CHECK WAS DONE AND DROVE VEHICLE. HEARD A BANG AND THE TRANSMISSION BLEW UP. DEALER CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *AK
THE ABS LIGHT INDICATOR CAME ON AND INDICATES PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES. MANUAL STATES TO RETURN VEHICLE TO DEALER, REPAIR WORK DONE FIVE TIMES. BRAKES WOULD PULL TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE, AND STEERING WAS OFF. DEALER CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *AK
