NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Ford Fusion. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The backup assisting camera is no longer working properly, causing a safety issue while reversing. There are recalls on this from 2015 to 2019 but not 2014 even though the same issue is happening with the 2014's.
Complaint Description: I am filing a complaint regarding a severe brake assist failure in my 2014 Ford Fusion. The vehicle has experienced a repeated loss of brake assist, resulting in a hard brake pedal and increased stopping distance. Despite multiple visits to the dealership, only the vacuum pump was replaced, and the root cause was intally never fully diagnosed. Full diagnosis is still under dealersip review at Phil Long Ford of Denver. I am concerned that this is part of a larger, incomplete brake system failure. As several brake recalls have recently been fixed inclding replacing leaking brake lines and brake lights. While there are currently known recalls on certain Ford Fusion brake systems (such as brake hoses, brake lights etc), these recalls do not appear to cover critical components such as the vacuum pump, brake booster, hard brake lines, and camshaft. These omissions leave a gap in addressing a potentially life-threatening safety risk. The dealer’s incomplete diagnostic leaves me and others exposed to a dangerous failure. I urge NHTSA to open an investigation into these brake system components to ensure that a comprehensive recall is considered. The repeated failure, despite previous repair attempts, makes it imperative that all related brake components be thoroughly examined, as this is a life safety risk. Thank you for your prompt attention to this urgent matter.
While driving a 2014 Ford Fusion during a snowstorm, the vehicle displayed the warning message “Steering Assist Fault – Service Required.” Immediately afterward, the steering became extremely difficult to turn, requiring significantly greater effort to control the vehicle. This sudden loss of power steering assist created a serious safety risk for myself and others on the road. The vehicle was inspected by a dealership, which confirmed diagnostic codes U3000 and C200D in the Power Steering Control Module and recommended replacement of the steering gear assembly and related components. The dealer noted that my VIN was not listed as included in the relevant recalls, although many vehicles from the same model year were included in Ford recall 19S26 (NHTSA 19V632000), which addresses corrosion or breakage of electric power steering gear motor bolts and potential loss of power steering assist. No prior symptoms were noted before the warning message appeared. The failure was sudden and occurred while the vehicle was in motion. The steering gear and related components are available for inspection. Based on the dealer’s assessment and the similarity to documented recall conditions, the cause appears to be a sudden failure of the electric power steering gear assembly.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel remained stuck in the direction turned and failed to return to center. The contact stated that the traction control warning light was illuminated. Due to the failure, excessive force was needed to steer the vehicle while driving back to the residence. The contact’s stepson used a code reader to diagnose the vehicle and performed a reset, and the power steering assist feature returned. Upon investigation, the contact's stepson discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V632000 (STEERING); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact was informed that the repair was temporary and that the failure would return. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
There is a problem with the purge valve on the ford fusion. Car will not start after pumping gas. You have to step on the gas pedal several times and then the car will turn on. After doing research there seems to be several people with the same problem. The purge valve on the canister is getting stuck letting the fumes come in making the system run with extra fuel that’s escaping.
the cross trafic light warning comes out as not working while i am driving on highway or any other street and the system is actually working
The vehicle slowed down on the highway and had to pull over and get off the freeway. Brake lights stayed o On. was able to drive the car at max n No more then 40 mph. A part had broken off in the brake pedal area. Not sure where. But had to unplug the brake switch so my battery would not die. With out the brake switch connected the car will not shift into gear or drive. .
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. While driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel became very firm. The contact pulled over, and the messages “Steering Loss” and “Service Advancetrac” were displayed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V632000 (STEERING); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 107,904.
Power Steering Loss (2019 - Recall 19S26): Affects 2013–2016 models. Corrosion of the steering gear motor bolts can lead to a sudden loss of electric power steering assist, making the car harder to steer. This recently happened to my vehicle, causing my wife to almost crash. Luckily she wasn’t far from home and was able to drive slowly with very difficult steering made it home safely. I took the vehicle to the local ford dealership that has described that the bolts have sheered off on my vehicle the exact thing described in this recall, but have informed me that according to my VIN this recall doesn’t apply.
My 2014 Ford Fusion caught fire on January 19, 2026, while parked and stationary inside my residential garage. The vehicle could not be shifted out of park during the incident. Emergency services responded, and an official fire department report was generated. I had owned the vehicle for less than one year and performed no mechanical, electrical, or aftermarket modifications. The vehicle had undergone parking brake service at a licensed dealer prior to delivery, with no work performed after I took possession.
One day the car was fine, next morning went to start car and was greeted by multiple failure warnings - Adaptive Cruise Control Not Available, Service AdvanceTrac, Steering Assist Fault Service Required, and Hill Start Assist Not Available. Efforts to restart without errors failed. Power Steering lost and unable to turn the wheel without great effort. Parked car and towed to dealer, Failure of Electronic Rack and Pinion Steering per the dealership at a cost of $2500 - $3000. Car Donated to Charity. Concern in submitting is a record of other recent failures of this year, make and model failing in much more dangerous situation than mine but appears that this part has reached its useful life without identification from Ford of the likelihood of failure on these older cars.
As I was driving, making a right turn and with out warning my steering wheel before excessively hard to control, turn. Because of the sudden wheel tightening as I was making this right turn I almost collided with a vehicle in next lane on highway. My brakes were in good standing but I had to really step down on my brakes to gain control of the steering wheel. I put in the shop and got a multi point inspection with repairs costs of over 3000 to replace steering wheel gear bolts etc in which I can't afford at this time
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a front driver's side seat belt and seat belt retractor failure. The contact was informed that the front driver's side seat belt retractor and seat belt needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was informed that the parts needed to be ordered. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,500.
repeat failures of recall 16S42 Ford is forcing me to handle a recall that failed after repair was done before purchasing of vehicle
Rear seat belt plastic clasp has broken on both sides and no longer function. Additionally, replacement parts are not available. Children are no longer able to sit in the rear seat. This issue has been reported in online forums.
The backup camera works intermittently. Showing a black screen and telling me to see a dealer.
Steering Assist Fault Service required along with message Check Charging System after I tried to pull out of work parking lot and steering wheel is hard can not turn it left or right.
My back up camera glitches out where it works one moment and then it doesn’t an I get a message says that the back up camera doesn’t work to call dealership.
The backup camera screen is black or flickers, and sometimes shows an error message like 'Camera not available.'
Rear view camera inspection recall (Campaign 25SA9/25v695) should be extended at least a few more years. My 2014 Ford Fusion Platinum is affected by the same issue.
I went to start my vehicle and none of the electronic instrument panels turned off. The car started but i couldn't see anything on the panel. I turned off the car, waited for a few minutes, and turned it back on. The instrument panel and other electronic screens turned on but I had 8 different lights pop back on. I had my scan tool and pulled various codes regarding the PCM and losing connection to ABS, steering column, power steering, etc. I took it into my mechanic and they were not able to replicate the issue.
The back up camera is intermittent or is a black screen. It also displays like a mirror image instead of what is directly behind me (right is on the left and left is on the right)
Vehicle camera works intermittently. The screen will come on while in reverse however, will go BLACK. I've turned the camera off and on but the same thing happens. The camera should not function like this.
My brakes periodically engage autonomously, including when I have cruise control on, or at home, which respectively turns off cruise control, and leaves my brakes lights on, killing my battery. It is my understanding that my year make and model have a recall for the brake sensor switch, but does not show for my VIN. My car was located in Texas satisfying the hot/ humid condition of the existing recall.
Rear viiew camera stops working and/or goes blank when the car is put in reverse. Sometimes will also displays Back up camera not working please contact dealership.
transmission fluid leaks through the left side axel. when filled several times and changed the axel and the seal, it continued to leak. I checked it in with a transmission shop and they said to me that many fusions have been leaking and they will try to change the pushing inside the cup.
Was driving at about 45mph on [XXX] on [XXX] and there was a lower control arm failure on the front passenger side of vehicle. Caused the vehicle to be inoperable. I was able to have someone pull me out of the way to not impeded traffic with the car in neutral but was unable to do much with it. It was late at night so I was unable to really access the damage. My wife had our insurance tow the vehicle to my home a few hours ago on [XXX] and it appears the lower control arm is gone, the axle has detached from the wheel (axle still hanging from bottom of car), pretty bad damage to the inner wheel well, passenger fender, and minor damage to the front bumper and passenger side skirt. I had read there was a recall on this vehicle online and wanted to find out more about my options. The car has just shy of 100k miles and is a daily driver. So I am stuck in a bad potisition with this. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and occupied, the contact’s daughter attempted to turn off the vehicle, and the brake lights remained illuminated. Additionally, while depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle decelerated unintentionally while driving to the residence with smoke coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that an independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was taken to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the brake switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then towed back to the independent mechanic, and the contact was informed that all four brakes had seized. The brakes were unlocked, and the brake switch was replaced. The contact stated that the failure had occurred twice. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.
The transmission failed completely. The vehicle will not engage or shift properly and cannot be driven. The failed transmission is still installed in the vehicle and available for inspection upon request.
The back-up camera has been very intermittent in its operation. Most of the time, it will show up black. I pulled a code saying that there's an communication error. More recently, it has turned on but everything is inversed. When i turn right, the camera is showing it on the left-hand side of the screen.
The backup camera is not working right it's either fuzzy or it's black and sometimes it is showing on opposite direction causing me to almost have a huge accident with my children inside this is currently still happening and started over 2 months ago.
Coolant is leaking into the head gasket of the 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid similar to the other 2014 Ford Fusion cars (they have a recall on them for this issue). Upon calling the nearest Ford dealership, I was told that the recall did not apply to my vehicle, even though the same recall has been made for other 2014 Ford Fusions (just not the hybrid specifically). The safety of the driver and passengers in the car is at risk due to the coolant fluid mixing into the engine oil, eventually causing a blown head gasket and potentially engine failure. This problem was identified within minutes of getting a routine oil change, as coolant was found in the cap of the head gasket. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. There were no warning signs. The car notified me when I needed to change my oil, but otherwise, no dash lights came on and no notifications were sent to the dash.
Was driving lost power steering shut my car off turned it back on all the lights were gone off the dash and it had power steering again . Parked went to work the next day and drove home fine parked and then all the same lights came on again and has lost all power steering .
The rearview camera does not display properly. The image is flipped which can cause confusion when using the camera to check for traffic. Sometimes the camera does not come on/display images when shifting into reverse. Also at night the camera is streaky so one is unable to see images in the camera. I noticed there was a recall for the rearview camera but my make/model/year was not included but I am experiencing issues with the rearview camera.
On cold startup, a significant amount of white exhaust is sometimes observed coming out of the tailpipes. The exhaust has a sweet aroma and after checking the coolant levels, it appears that the coolant levels have dropped and the exhaust smoke is being caused by a coolant intrusion into the engine block. No warning lights have been observed and it only happens about half of the time.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a loud clunking sound coming from the steering wheel while attempting to make a turn. There were several unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the steering wheel was difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the electric rack and pinion had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact ordered the parts and had the dealer install the parts. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where the same diagnostic was provided. The contact was informed that the electric rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The parts were ordered by the dealer. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where the same diagnostic was provided. The contact was informed that electric rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 208,864.
My backup camera does not work periodically. It will say camera unavailable. I use my camera in conjunction with my mirrors so it is really difficult when I can’t see behind me.
Transmission randomly stopped driving at highway speeds rpm spiked and no movement was in fast lane at 75 mph. Transmission is toast now in for 4-6 thousand dollars to replace also ford did the recall on the emissions reprogram a few months before this issue then tells me it needs a catalytic converter another costly repair car is unsafe. I’m thankful I was driving and not a family with kids.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the messages "Service - AdvanceTrac Off", "Hill start Assist Unavailable", and "Steering Assist Fault - Required" were displayed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the steering rack had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced an unknown recall; however the VIN was not included in the unknown recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.
I am submitting this complaint regarding a complete loss of power steering on my 2014 Ford Fusion. The issue occurred without warning and was accompanied by multiple dashboard alerts including: “Steering Loss – Stop Safely” “Service AdvanceTrac” “Hill Start Assist Not Available” The steering became extremely heavy and difficult to turn, creating a major safety concern—especially while driving at low speeds or attempting to park. I have since researched this issue and found numerous reports from other 2014 Ford Fusion owners experiencing the exact same failure. While Ford issued a Customer Satisfaction Program (15N01) covering similar issues on 2011–2013 Fusion models, no such support appears to be available for the 2014 model—even though the symptoms and system design are identical. Dealers are quoting repairs in excess of $3,500 to replace the rack-and-pinion steering system, which is believed to be the source of the failure. Given the abrupt and dangerous nature of the malfunction, I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this issue as a potential safety defect and consider whether Ford should expand coverage or issue a formal recall for affected 2014 vehicles. This is a critical steering safety issue that could easily lead to accidents or injury if it happens at higher speeds or in traffic. I urge the NHTSA to take this seriously and evaluate Ford’s handling of this problem in 2014 Fusion models. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I left my car at Ford to do the recalls, they just called me telling me they won’t fix the brake light on because in Florida it doesn’t cover the repair, something about the humidity here. It doesn’t make sense for me, they were trying to charge me around 400 bucks to fix it. They will give me my car back without fixing the problem. My car is at Matthews-Currie Ford in Venice.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while wearing the driver's side seat belt, the seat belt failed to retract and was locked. The contact stated that the failure mostly occurred after the vehicle had been parked outside in extreme heat, but the seat belt operated as needed in the morning after the vehicle had been parked in the garage overnight. The contact was unable to secure herself inside the vehicle using the seat belt. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V875000 (Seat belts); however, the VIN was not included. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
My brake fluid line ruptured and the dealer refused repair and told me that even if they did repair it I would take 2 days and wouldn’t provide a loaner/rental so I had took to a different shop that I had to pay out of pocket for and was done in an hour.and also this is a recall for my year make and model and isn’t on my vin
I had multiple coolant leaks in the pass and I have to constantly replace the hose about every 2000-3000 miles Also my screen went out in my dashboard causing me to not be able to make any audio changes or station adjustments in my car Lastly whenever I get ready to increase my speed my car jerks back

Steering gear in rack in pinion grinding and felt like car stalled and steering went hard..no warnings or indications prior to..67,000 miles on Car …now there is a continuous grinding sound coming from steering wheel and Ford had a recall on 2014 Fusion but my car doesn’t show any …afraid steering may lock up without warning
Recent problem with the backup camera on a 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid that intermittently shows the image in reverse- right is left and left is right. This is very dangerous when backing up . Ford is aware of the problem and has recalls on other models with the same problem but not ours.
Our 2014 Ford Fusion was recalled under NHTSA Campaign Number 15V250000, issued June 24, 2015, for an issue with internal binding and corrosion in the power steering rack which could lead to a loss of power steering assist. In 2015, Brighton Ford (Livingston County, MI) performed the recall remedy. After that service, our vehicle's VIN was removed from NHTSA's active recall list. However, on [XXX], less than 10 years later, the exact same issue occurred again—the steering wheel froze and the front wheels did not respond. The "Steering Loss" warning appeared. Thankfully, no one was hurt. The car was diagnosed and repaired at Balise Ford of Wilbraham, MA. They retrieved DTC C102D:00 which indicates high friction in the power steering gear, a symptom specifically tied to internal binding caused by water ingress, as described in the original recall. The steering rack was replaced at our expense. The repair invoice and technician comments clearly describe the same failure mode the recall was meant to prevent. This indicates the original recall remedy was ineffective in our case. WHAT IS YOUR REQUEST TO NHTSA? We respectfully request that NHTSA: Reinstate our VIN on the 15V250000 recall list, acknowledging that the original repair was inadequate and the defect recurred. Enable us to seek reimbursement from Ford for the repair and towing costs now totaling over $5,400. This situation demonstrates that a single recall remedy does not always fully resolve the safety issue. We hope NHTSA will help ensure affected owners are protected and treated fairly. On May 15, 2025 I experience a loss of power steering assist in my vehicle due to steering gear bold corrosion. There is a recall for this exact same issue, 19S26/19V632, issued on 2019-10-11, however, Ford is telling me my VIN number is not included in this recall. They are also claiming this problem was fixed as part of their recall 19R02 back in 2015. As part of the more recent recall, the remedy calls for replacing the bolts and applying a corrosion inhibitor, but they obviously did not do when fixing recall 19R02 back in 2015.
