RECALL CAMPAIGN 04V332000,CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR THE COIL SPRING SHIELD WHICH WAS MAKING A NOISE. CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER. THEY STATED IT WAS NOT TIGHT ENOUGH. WHEN TURNING A CORNER VEHICLE SOUNDED LIKE THE SPRING SHIELD WAS RUBBING AGAINST THE SPRINGS. DEALER STATED NO ADDITIONAL SERVICE WAS NEEDED ON THE COIL SPRING SHIELD. *AK CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER, HE DECIDED THE LINER IN THE FENDER WELL NEEDED TO BE CUT OUT LARGER BECAUSE THE HOLE THAT WAS CUT IN THE LINER FOR THE COIL SPRING TO GO THROUGH WAS NOT LARGE ENOUGH. *BF *NM
THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD COME ON AND GO OFF WHILE DRIVING IN INCLEMENT WEATHER. THE CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO DEALER. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE DRIVER THAT THE WINDSHIELD MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PLEASE FILL IN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB LEFT BACK WINDOW MOTOR FELL OUT OF WINDOW. WINDOW WILL NOT GO UP OR DOWN. 'RECALL CAMPAIGN' ISSUED FOR FRONT COIL SPRINGS ON 1999 FORD TAURUS. *BF THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS FRACTURED AND DAMAGED THE TIRE. THE REPLACEMENT PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE CONSUMER HAD DIFFICULTY MOVING THE VEHICLE. THE MECHANIC DISCOVERED BROKEN COIL SPRINGS WHICH DAMAGED THE FRONT TIRES AND STRUTS. THE CONSUMER REQUESTED TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR. *SC
1. NORMAL OPERATION OF VEHICLE. 2. REAR SEAT BELT RETRACTION MECHANISMS FAIL. REPLACED 1, UNIT FAILED AGAIN. NOW NEITHER OF THE 2 UNITS WORK. UNABLE TO USE THE VEHICLE WITH MORE THAN 2 PASSENGERS. 3. 1 PART REPLACED, FAILED AGAIN WITHIN 1 YEAR.
CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD AND REMAINED ON. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE DRIVER THAT THE SPEED CONTROL SENSOR AND SHIFTER CABLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS. *NM
THE CONSUMER HAS BEEN UNABLE TO HAVE THE COIL SPRING SHIELD PLACED ONTO THE VEHICLE SINCE THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER HAVE STATED NO PARTS WERE IN. NHTSA SPRING SHIELD RECALL 04V332000. *AK
CONSUMER WAS DRIVING DOWN A COUNTRY ROAD IN A 1999 FORD TAURUS STATION WAGON WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED WITH NO WARNING AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. FORTUNATELY, CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP WITH NO DAMAGE AND SAFELY EXIT THE VEHICLE. THE FOLLOWING DAY THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN (USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE) TO THE DEALER WHO SUBSEQUENTLY DETERMINED THAT THE STEEL TUBING OF THE BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED THROUGH, CAUSING THE FAILURE. HAVING NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A FAILURE IN THREE DECADES OF BEING INVOLVED WITH AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR IN A NORTHERN CLIMATE WITH SALTED ROADS, AND IN VIEW OF THE FACT THAT THIS VEHICLE SPENT ONLY A FEW YEARS IN A NORTHERN CLIMATE PRIOR TO MOVING TO A SNOW-FREE AREA, CONSUMER REQUESTED AND WAS GIVEN THE FAILED BRAKE LINES AS EVIDENCE (STILL AVAILABLE). REPLACING THE BRAKE LINES COST OVER $100 IN PARTS AND SUPPLIES AND OVER $360 IN LABOR, FOR A TOTAL BILL OF $471.18. A SUBSEQUENT SEARCH OF THE NHTSA DATABASE REVEALED OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THE TAURUS (SEE ODI #10117988 AND #10124628) WITH NO INVESTIGATION INITIATED BY EITHER FORD OR NHTSA. EVIDENTLY INVESTIGATIONS DO NOT HAPPEN UNLESS THERE IS A FIRE, DEATH, INJURY, ETC., AND THESE COMPLAINTS INVOLVED: A TAURUS THAT HAD ALREADY EXITED A HIGHWAY; ONE IN A MCDONALD'S DRIVE-THRU; AND THIS ONE ON AN ISOLATED ROAD. IT SEEMS INCREDIBLE THAT NO ACTION IS TAKEN ON SUCH AN OBVIOUS MATERIAL DESIGN DEFECT THAT CAN RESULT IN A SUDDEN LOSS OF BRAKING WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET THE NHTSA'S ATTENTION?
NHTSA CAMPAIGN 04V332000; FORD ISSUED A FRONT COIL SPRINGS RECALL. THIS VEHICLE IS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT HAD THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS BREAK CAUSING THE FRONT LEFT TIRE TO RUPTURE. MANUFACTURER WILL RECEIVE PARTS IN ORDER TO REPAIR. *NM
THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT BELT FAILED TO RETRACT ON ITS ON. THE SEAT BELT WILL NOT MOVE WHILE ADJUSTING. CONSUMER DROVE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, WHO INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THE SEAT BELT RETRACTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK *ER *JB

WHILE BACKING OUT OF A DRIVEWAY THE VEHICLE'S DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT COIL SPRING FRACTURED. *NM RECALL CAMPAIGN: THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO BE REPAIRED. PER THE DEALER THE RECALL COULD NOT BE PERFORMED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE HAD AFTERMARKET STRUTS INSTALLED WHICH DID NOT PROVIDE A PLACE TO ATTACH THE COIL SPRING PROTECTIVE SHIELD. *NM

REAR COIL SPRING FAILURE DUE TO RUST 1999 FORD TAURUS. *TR
I OWN A 99 FORD TAURUS. IT IS LEAKING WATER INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THIS LEAK HAS CAUSED THE HEATER BLOWER MOTOR AND RESISTER TO SHORT OUT AS A RESULT I HAVE NO HEAT AND IT IS WINTER IN MINNESOTA. I CANNOT AFFORD THE OVER $200 REPAIR AND WITH THE LEAK STILL PRESENT IT WILL SHORT OUT AGAIN. THERE IS AT LEAST ONE SIMILAR COMPLAINT THAT I KNOW OF, IT IS 10184014. I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE MY WINDOWS WILL NOT DEFROST AND IT IMPAIRS MY VISION. THE BLOWER MOTOR WOULD NOT HAVE FAILED IF THE LEAK DID NOT EXIST. *TR
I WAS NOTIFIED BY MAIL BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY IN AUGUST OF 2004 OF A RECALL OF MY 1999 TAURUS REGARDING THE COIL SPRINGS. THE RECALL # IS 04S17/04M04. THE NOTICE STATED THAT IN CERTAIN HIGH CORROSION AREAS THE FRONT SPRINGS COULD FRACTURE AND RUPTURE THE TIRE. IT WAS ANTICIPATED THAT IN DECEMBER 2004, KITS WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO THE FORD DEALERS TO INSTALL OVER THE SPRINGS TO PREVENT TIRE RUPTURE. ON TUESDAY DEC. 21, 2004, I BROUGHT IN THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR ROUTINE SERVICE (90,000 MILES). I ASKED ABOUT THE KIT AND WAS TOLD THAT NONE WERE AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED THAT I WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN THEY ARE IN, BUT I SHOULD BE OK. AFTER THE CAR WAS SERVICED, I BROUGHT THE CAR HOME ON WEDNESDAY, DEC. 22, 2004. IT THEN STAYED IN THE GARAGE AT HOME UNTIL TUESDAY MORNING DEC. 28,2004. AT THAT TIME, I STARTED THE CAR TO GO TO WORK. WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE, THERE WAS A LOUD BANG, AND THE CAR TILTED TO THE DRIVER'S SIDE. I GOT OUT AND FOUND THAT THE TIRE HAD "POPPED". I HAD AAA COME TO FIX THE TIRE. THEY FOUND THAT THE SPRING HAD FRACTURED AND PUNCTURED THE TIRE. FORD TOOK CARE OF EVERYTHING THAT WAS DAMANGED (REPLACED BOTH FRONT END PARTS AND THE TIRE) PROMPTLY. MY CONCERN WITH THE RECALL IS THAT OTHERS MAY NOT NOT BE AS FORTUNATE AS I TO HAVE THE SPRING BREAK AND THE TIRE RUPUTURE IN THE GARAGE. HAD THIS HAPPENED AT FREEWAY SPEEDS, THE OUTCOME MAY HAVE BEEN TRAGIC. I BELIEVE FORD NEEDS FIX THESE VEHICLES ASAP IN ORDER TO PREVENT WHAT COULD BE TRAGIC SITUATIONS.*AK
NHTSA RECALL 04V332000 ON THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS. THE DEALER REFUSED TO DO THE RECALL. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT THE SPRINGS HAVE TO BE FRACTURED FIRST, BEFORE IT CAN BE INSPECTED OR REPLACED. *JB *TT

CONSUMER RECEIVED NHTSA RECALL 04V332000. CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR THE FRONT SAFETY SHIELD, AS STATED IN THE RECALL THAT THE SHIELD WOULD BE REPLACED AS WELL AS THE WARRANTY EXTENDED. DEALER REFUSED TO PLACE THE SHIELD ONTO THE VEHICLE. *AK
CONSUMER RECEIVED NHTSA RECALL 04V332000/MANUFACTURER'S RECALL 04S17 BACK IN AUGUST. HAD CONTACTED DEALERSHIP, AND WAS INFORMED PARTS BE AVAILABLE IN DECEMBER. CHECKED WITH DEALERSHIP, TODAY, AND PARTS WERE STILL NOT AVAILABLE.*AK
CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL FROM MANUFACTURER. RECALL # 04S17-04MO4 INVOLVING THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS. SHE TOOK HER VEHICLE TO GET SERVICED BUT WAS TOLD THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE PARTS AVAILABLE. THEY WOULD ORDER THEM BUT IT WOULD TAKE ABOUT A MONTH. IT HAS BEEN A MONTH AND THE DEALER STILL HAS NOT RECEIVED PARTS.
I WAS TRAVELLING SOUTH ON I-15 AT 11:00 AT NIGHT GOING DOWN FROM THE EL CAJON SUMMIT WHEN I THOUGHT THERE WAS A STRANGE WOBBLING EVERY TIME I USED THE BRAKES. I HEARD A TERRIBLE THUD AND THOUGHT I SAW A PIECE OF TIRE FLY BY THE PASSENGER SIDE. I PULLED TO THE SHOULDER AND LOOKED AT ALL THE TIRES, BUT THEY WERE ALL STILL INFLATED SO I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN AND EASED DOWN THE SHOULDER, BUT THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE. UPON CLOSER EXAMINATION OF THE TIRES, I FOUND THAT THE TREAD SEPARATED COMPLETELY FROM THE TIRE, CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL WELL. IT ALSO CAUSED A VACUUM HOSE TO COME APART FROM IT'S CONNECTION, WHICH I SUSPECT IS LINKED TO THE AC. AAA WAS CALLED TO CHANGE THE TIRE, AND I HAVE THE RECEIPT. THE NEXT DAY I HAD A NEW TIRE PUT ON AS WELL AS REPLACED ANOTHER TIRE THAT WAS IN NEED. THEY CHECKED THE REMAINING GENERAL TIRE AND SAID IT WAS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE NEXT MORNING I HEADED HOME AT 5:00 IN THE MORNING. I WAS EASTBOUND ON I-91 A MILE AND A HALF FROM THE I-15 CONNECTION WHEN THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE. AGAIN THE WHEEL WELL WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND THE REAR FENDER TO MY CAR. AAA WAS AGAIN CALLED, AND A RECEIPT WAS OBTAINED. I HAVE BOTH TIRES IN MY POSESSION. THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, AND THE SECOND INCIDENT HAPPENED ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12.*AK
CONSUMER'S VEHICLE REAR END ANOTHER VEHICLE IN FRONT AT 35 MPH. UPON IMPACT, NEITHER FRONTAL AIR BAG DEPLOYED. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED.*AK
THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. THE CONSUMER WILL TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC FOR THE REPAIR OF THE RACK AND PINION. *JB......REPAIR SHOP REMOVED AND REPLACED POWER RACK AND PINION STEERING GEAR, AND BLED POWER STEERING SYSTEM. *AK

REAR SEAT SEATBELTS QUIT WORKING FOR NO APPARENT REASON. *BF NONE OF THE SEAT BELTS IN THE VEHICLE WILL NOT RETRACT. *TC *JB
CONSUMER'S REAR PASSENGER SEAT BELTS WILL NOT RETRACT. CONSUMER WAS MADE AWARE OF THIS WHEN THE SEAT WAS OCCUPIED BY REAR SEAT PASSENGERS. *AK
DT: THE CONTACT STATED THAT ON DECEMBER 1, 2004 FRONT LEFT COIL SPRING BROKE THAT PUNCTURED THE TIRE. ALSO, THE KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF THE IGNITION. ONCE IN AWHILE ONE COULD TURN THE STEERING WHEEL JUST RIGHT AND THE KEY WILL COME OUT. THE CONTACT HAD TO PRY OPEN THE HOOD OR IT WILL NOT OPEN. CONTACT HAS NOT TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE BLOWER MOTOR WILL NOT WORK, AND THAT WAS WHAT FOGGED UP THE WINDOWS. HAD TO DASH OFF IN ORDER TO GET TO THE BLOWER. JULY 1, 2005 THE DOOR SENSOR WILL DING EVEN WHEN SHUT THE DOOR, AND IT WILL STAY ON UNTIL IT RUNS DOWN THE BATTERY. *AK
REAR SEATBELT RETRACTORS NONFUNCTIONAL. BELT IS OUT DOES NOT RETRACT OR ADJUST BACK IN.THIS HAS HAPPENED THREE TIMES TO THIS CAR. ONCE WHEN FIRST PURCHASED, FIXED AT NO COST. LAST YEAR ,ONE RETRACTOR REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. NOW AGAIN. *AK
MY WIFE DROVE OUR 1999 FORD TAURUS SE TO THE STORE AND WHEN SHE WENT TO LEAVE THE KEY WOULD NOT FIT IN THE IGNITION SWITCH. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS SHE FINALLY GOT THE KEY IN BUT IT WOULD NOT TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH. HER AND MY KIDS WHERE STRANDED IN TOWN CLOSE TO HOME. BUT WITH ME BEING DEPLOYED IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE. I NEED TO KNOW IF THERE HAS BEEN ANY OTHER ISSUES WITH THE IGNITION SWITCHES GOING BAD ON THIS TYPE OF CAR. I CANT SEE A IGNITION SWITCH GOING BAD ON SUCH A FAIRLY NEW CAR. AND THE COST AND HASSLE YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH TO GET THE SWITCH ,KEY AND THE KEY PROGRAMMED IS OUTRAGES. *JB
THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE REPAIR SHOP FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT A HOLE WAS INSIDE OF THE GAS TANK WHICH WAS LEAKING GAS AND IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PLEASE FILL IN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB

THE CONSUMER WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE SEAT BELT. THE CONSUMER PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED AND DISCOVERED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR A SEAT BELT PROBLEM. THE DEALER TOLD THE CONSUMER THAT THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER DID NOT QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL. *JB THE SEAT BELT WOULD NOT RETRACT AND OR COME OUT ENOUGH TO BUCKLE IT. RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE FOR DEFECTIVE FRONT COIL SPRING. REPLACED BOTH FRONT COIL SPRINGS. *BF CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 04V332000 THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD HER FRONT COIL SPRINGS ARE NOT CRACKED AND ARE WORKING NORMALLY. FORD MOTOR COMPANY'S POSITION IS TO INSTALL PROTECTIVE SPRING SHIELDS WHICH WERE NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL DEC 2004 ON THE CONSUMERS VEHICLE AND EXTEND THE WARRANTY OF THE FRONT COIL SPRINGS. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT HER VEHICLE DOES NOT MEET THE CRITERIA TO REPLACE THE SPRINGS UNDER THIS RECALL. *TC

CONSUMER NOTICED THAT BOTH FRONTAL AND REAR SEAT BELTS WERE INOPERATIVE, AND DID NOT RETRACT. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. *AK
WHEN STARTING VEHICLE IT BEGAN TO SHAKE, AND THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME BUT AT A VERY SLOW PACE. SHE VEHICLE ACTED AS IF IT DID NOT WANT TO GO. CONSUMER STATED LAST WEEK THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AT ALL. SHE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A MECHANIC, WHO DETERMINED THAT VEHICLE NEEDED A TIMING BELT, WHICH SHE HAD PUT ON. *AK
ALTERNATOR BELTS BREAKING. NEW ALTERNATOR BELT LASTING FOR ONLY 1 MILE, THEN SHREDDING AGAIN. HAD TO GET ENTIRE PULLEY SYSTEM REPLACED. *AK
CONSUMER STATED THAT TRANSMISSION JERKED. BUT IT HAD BEEN DOING THIS SINCE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE. HE MENTIONED THIS TO THE DEALER FROM WHOM HE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE . TOOK VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER, AND THEY PUT A STRAINER IN THE TRANSMISSION, BUT IT DID NOT HELP THE PROBLEM. CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS A POS MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT.*AK
THE POWER DOOR LOCKS OCCASIONALLY UNLOCK AUTOMATICALLY WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE OR WHEN PARKED. PROBLEM CONTINUED UNTIL LOCK ACTUATORS FAILED AND THE DOORS COULD ONLY BE LOCKED OR UNLOCKED MANUALLY. DEALER REPLACED THREE FAILED ACTUATORS ($500) AND THE DOORS BEGAN TO AUTOMATICALLY UNLOCK AGAIN.
THE PARTS TO PERFORM THE FRONT COIL SPRING RECALL 04V332000 REPAIRS WAS NOT GOING TO BE AVAILABLE WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME FRAME. PARTS WERE SCHEDULED TO ARRIVE IN DECEMBER 2004. CURRENTLY, THE PART WERE DUE TO ARRIVE BETWEEN JUNE - JULY 2005. ALSO, CONSUMER FELT THAT THE REMEDY WAS NOT ADEQUATE ENOUGH FOR THE PROBLEM.*AK

THE REAR LAP/SHOULDER SEATBELTS ON BOTH SIDES DO NOT RETRACT CORRECTLY. ONE STOPPED RETRACTING COMPLETELY, AND THE OTHER INTERMITTENTLY, CAUSING THEM TO BE UNSAFE AND UNUSABLE. I FOUND NHTSA SAFETY RECALL #99V250000 FOR A SIMILAR PROBLEM, WHICH I BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER, BUT THEY SAID THAT IT DID NOT COVER MY SPECIFIC VEHICLE. INTERMITTANTLY THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ACTIVATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PUSHED! I HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR THREE YEARS. USUALLY BY TURNING THE WIPER SWITCH ON THEN OFF, IT WOULD STOP. TODAY THAT HAD NO AFFECT ON THE WIPERS. I DROVE THE CAR FOR ABOUT 2.5 HOURS TODAY. THE WIPERS CAME ON FOR A TOTAL OF ABOUT TWENTY MINUTES . I AM TAKING THE CAR TO FORD TOMORROW. I TALKED WITH THE SERVICE SPECIALIST TODAY. HE STATED THIS WAS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM OVER SEVERAL MODELS OF FORD VEHICLES. THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH MALFUNCTIONS. WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONSUMER TRIED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. THE CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT THE HEAD GASKET BLEW AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. PLEASE FILL IN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB
