DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND IT WAS AS IF IT WENT INTO NEUTRAL. NO FORWARD OR REVERSE GEARS. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF ANYTHING ABOUT TO HAPPEN TRANSMISSION WAS NOT SLIPPING OR ACTING UP PRIOR TO THIS. JUST GLAD THERE WAS NOT HEAVY TRAFFIC AS THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A BAD SCENARIO. AFTER RESEARCH HAVE FOUND THIS IS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THIS VEHICLE. WONDERING WHY FORD HAS NOT DOWN SOMETHING ABOUT IT. BOUGHT A FORD TAURUS BECAUSE WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A VERY SAFE CAR FOR A YOUNG DRIVER.

THE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED AND FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT A NEW TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000.

FOR NO APPARENT REASON, THE CAR WAS DRIVING FINE ONE MOMENT AND THEN THERE WAS NO DRIVE IN ANY GEAR. TOTAL COST FOR TOWING AND REPAIR WAS $3086. TRANSMISSION SHOP SAID REASON FOR FAILURE WAS FAILED TORQUE CONVERTER. TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT DUE TO OVERHEATING. TRANSMISSION COOLER WAS FULL OF TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH MATERIAL. I HAVE FOUND 113 INCIDENTS OF DANGEROUS TORQUE CONVERTER FAILURE RELATED COMPLAINTS IN THIS NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHSTA) DATABASE FROM 1994 THROUGH 2005. DRIVING AT 65MPH WITH THE CRUISE ON. THE RPM'S GOES TO 6000 WITH NO WARNING AND NO LIGHTS ON THE DASH. I TURN THE CRUISE OFF AND THE RPM'S DROP. I NOW START TO ACCELERATE AND THE RPM'S JUST GO UP AND THE CAR DOESN'T MOVE FORWARD. I JUST GET THE CAR OFF THE ROADWAY BEFORE I AM REARENDED THANK GOD. ONCE ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ROADWAY I TRY ALL GEARS WITH NOTHING BUT HIGH RPM'S. I SIT ON THE SIDE OF THE ROADWAY FOR 1 HOUR WITH 18 WHEELERS GOING BY JUST INCHES FROM ME UNTIL A TOW TRUCK ARRIVES. NOTICED WITHIN LAST 2000 MILES THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD SLIP AND JERK WHEN DRIVING UP STEEP GRADES OR SHARP TURNS, WHEN IT WOULD ATTEMPT TO DOWNSHIFT FROM 3RD TO 2ND. IT FAILED COMPLETELY LAST NIGHT WHILE DRIVING HOME, FORTUNATELY WE WERE ONLY 3 MILES FROM OUR HOME. NOW IT WILL ONLY GO 25 MPH AND HAS A BURNING ODOR. IT HAS 103K MILES AND THE AUTO TRANS WAS SERVICED (FILTER/FLUID CHANGED) EVERY 35K MILES. WE WILL GET AN ESTIMATE FOR THE REPAIR/REPLACEMENT, HOWEVER I SUSPECT A BILL FROM $1500-2200 IS IN ORDER. ALL THE NEWS I HEARD ABOUT FORD AUTOMATICS IS NOW SUBSTANTIATED....THIS IS THE LAST FORD FOR US PERIOD. *NM
