The contact stated that after parking the vehicle, the contact became aware that the rear passenger's side wheel was pushed upward and was nearly rubbing the inner wheel well. The contact stated that upon inspecting the rear axle, he became aware that the rear axle was fractured. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V608000 (Suspension); and the recall repair was previously performed on the vehicle. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 214,000.

The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel started pulling to one side, almost causing the contact to lose control of the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the motor mounts were damaged and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance because the vehicle was not under Warranty. The contact owns a 1999 Ford Windstar. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 MPH, he heard the rear driver’s side tire rubbing against the axle and then saw smoke coming from the tire. No warning light was illuminated. The contact then stated that the rear driver's side axle had fractured and was on the ground. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
If my vehicle is not used for a few days (3 to 4 days), when I start the vehicle, all the needles of the instrument cluster oscillate violently between extremes. However, this does not affect drivability and I can slowly move the car out of my driveway and get on the street. About 30 to 45 seconds after this, the needles stop moving and resume normal function.
Went into a curve and vehicle swayed and went into the other lane as if had a flat tire. I had it checked at an independent garage and found rear axle is breaking

FORD WINDSTAR REAR AXLE FAILURE HIGHWAY SPEEDS 3/21/21. LEFT REAR TIRE COLLAPSED AGAINST FRAME OF VEHICLE. TOOK VEHICLE TO FORD DEALERSHIP 4/1/21. THEY CONFIRMED AXLE FAILURE AND WOULD NOT COVER UNDER RECALL 15S27. (SEE ATTACHED ESTIMATE TO REPLACE) THEY CONFIRMED PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. CALLED FORD MOTOR COMPANY 4/1/21 800-392-3673 REGARDING RECALL 15S27. THEY WILL NO LONGER COVER RECALL. MAILED FORD MOTOR COMPANY REQUEST TO HONOR RECALL 15S27 4/5/21. NO REPLY YET AS OF 4/13/21. THE WINDSTAR ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, BODY ARE SOUND AND WAS USED DAILY. IF NOT FOR THEY REAR AXLE FAILURE IT WOULD SILL BE USED. I FEEL IF THE RECALL WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM BY FORD AND THE "FIX" FAILED. FORD SHOULD BE REASONABLE TO MAKE IT ROAD READY AGAIN BEING IT WAS A RECALLED PART.
I WAS DRIVING IN A 50 MPH ZONE WHEN I WAS COMING TO A STOP THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BROKE FREE FROM THE SUB FRAME BUT I WAS ABLE TO KEEP CONTROL. VAN IS NOW USELESS AND I ONLY HAVE 125K MILES ON IT.
THIS WAS MY MOTHERS . NOW MINE THE SPEED ODOMETER JUST GOES EVERY WHERE SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T MOVE AT ALL. AND IT DOES IT DOES SHOW THE RIGHT SPEED ALL THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DOES THE SAME . AND WHEN THAT STARTED THE WINDOWS STOP WORKING TOO. ANY MORE NOR THE RADIO. THEY SAID ITS A MAIN CONTROL MOLECULE. I JUST DON'T KNOW I GOT A TICKET CAUSE IT SAID I WAS GOING 89 IN 65 WOW.. HELP
THE AXLE ON THE BACK DRIVER'S SIDE IS TERRIBLY RUSTED TO THE POINT OF NO REPAIR. THE MECHANIC STATED IT IS A RECALL PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO THE FORD DEALER. HE ALSO STATED THAT IT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE DUE TO THE PROBLEMS THAT IT WAS CAUSING THE WHEEL TO NOT FIT OR STAY ON CORRECTLY CAUSING IT TO RUB ON THE VANS SURFACE CAUSING A BLOWOUT AND MAKING DRIVING ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE AND DANGEROUS. THANK GOD MY SON DROVE IT AND NOT MYSELF. THANK GOD THAT HE IS OKAY. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH ASAP. I AM A FOSTER MOM AND DRIVE CHILDREN IN THIS VAN AND IT DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE INSPECTED FOR THE PROBLEMS AND REPAIRED. MY SON WAS ON HIS WAY TO PUT GAS INTO THE VEHICLE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE MECHANIC TOLD US THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO BECAUSE OF THE CORROSION AND THEN INFORMED US ABOUT THE RECALL ON THE VEHICLE AND THE PROBLEMS THIS MODEL WAS HAVING WITH THE AXLES AND RUST AND CORROSION AND OTHER PROBLEMS. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT ASSOCIATED THE FAILURE WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V608000 (SUSPENSION) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE AND CONFIRMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 250,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE DRIVING 32 MPH ENTERING A RAMP TO THE FREEWAY, THE REAR AXLE FRACTURED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT MANAGED TO VEER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD WHERE THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF AND WOULD NOT RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S FATHER'S HOUSE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 15V608000 (SUSPENSION) AND 10V385000 (SUSPENSION). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000.
BRACING ON REAR AXLE DID NOT WORK, THE BRACING RETAINED ROAD SALT AND MOISTURE CAUSING THE AXLE TO FAIL. I WAS DRIVING TO WORK WHEN THE AXLE BROKE AND ALMOST WENT INTO A DICH.

WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE DROPPED. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND, WHEN INSPECTED, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE TIRES WHERE CAVED INWARDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO GROOVE FORD (10039 E ARAPAHOE RD, CENTENNIAL, CO 80112, (720) 523-9154) WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR AXLE BEAM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA TO FILE A COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 134,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD WINDSTAR. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V195000 (SUSPENSION) BY AN UNKNOWN FORD DEALER IN CIRCLEVILLE, OH THAT WAS NO LONGER IN BUSINESS. THE RECALL REQUIRED THE DEALER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND INSTALL A REINFORCEMENT BRACKET ON THE REAR AXLE OR REPLACE THE AXLES, AS NECESSARY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALER DID THE LATTER, CAUSING THE FAILURE TO RECUR AFTER FIVE YEARS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED AS HIS DAUGHTER ATTEMPTED TO SLOW DOWN WHILE EXITING THE HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE SWERVED BACK AND FORTH UNCONTROLLABLY. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE DRIVER NOTICED THAT THE REAR WHEELS WERE CROOKED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND STATED THAT THE RECALL WOULD NOT BE PERFORMED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000.

I WAS DRIVING AND HEARD A THUD. WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES THERE WAS A GRINDING NOISE. THE TIRE THAN BECAMED SLANT AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS COCKED TO ONE SIDE.
SUBFRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH AND WILL NOT PASS THE SAFETY. THE VEHICLE WAS TREATED BY THE RECALL 11S16-S4.IN 2012. I WENT FOR A VOLUNTARY SAFETY CHECK AND THE VEHICLE STAYED AT THE SERVICE AS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE.
BOTH FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM REAR ATTACHING BRACKETS AND BOTH BODY MOUNT ATTACHMENTS AT REAR OF SUB FRAME ARE RUSTED AND BROKEN . MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN I HEARD A CLUNKING SOUND . UPON INSPECTION FOUND THE ABOVE PROBLEMS
I HAD THE REAR AXLE REPLACED BY THE RECALL, AND WHICH I PAID $300 FOR THE WORK. THE AXLE NOW DOES NOT ALIGN PROPERLY AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT SHIMS ARE REQUIRED. WITHOUT THEM THE REAR AXLE EATS MY TIRES. FORD HAS A POLICY TO MY UNDERSTANDING THAT NEW PARTS INSTALLED BY FORD HAVE A LIFETIME WARRANTY. I BELIEVE THAT FORD SHOULD FIX OR PAY FOR THIS WORK SO AS TO MAKE MY VAN SAFE, WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO REPAIR AN AXLE THAT WAS JUST REPLACED LESS THEN 10000 MILES AGO.
THE TRANSMISSION WONT GO INTO DRIVE. WHEN IT DOES, IT SHIFTS VERY HARD AND AT EVERY STOP SIGN IT GOES OUT OF GEAR AGAIN.
FRONT LEFT SUB FRAME BY THE MOTOR MOUNT IS RUSTED THROUGH. PASSENGER SIDE IS FINE. CONCERNED THIS COULD BREAK WHICH COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO LOOSE CONTROL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 FORD WINDSTAR. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL POPPING NOISE AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO SUNSET FORD (11700 GRAVOIS RD, SAINT LOUIS, MO 63127) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE DUE TO THREATS MADE BY THE CONTACT AND TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED FROM THE PREMISES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000.
TAKATA RECALL: I DRIVE A FORD WINSTAR 1999 . I AM A FOSTER PARENT THEREFORE, I USE MY VAN TO TRANSPORT MY CHILDREN TO SCHOOL, VISITATION WITH THEIR PARENT, DOCTOR VISITS, ECT. I WAS TAKING MY VEHIJCLE. TO GET AN OIL CHANGE WHEN MY MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT MY SUB-FRAME WAS IN NEED OF BEING CHANGED. I TOOK MY CAR TO REPUBLIC FRAME AND AXLE TO MECHANICS THAT KNOW THEIR JOBS WELL. AFTER READING UP ON THE SUB-FRAME OF MY MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR ON MY COMPUTER,, I READ HOW DANGEROUS THIS SUB-FRAME CAN BE. NOT TO MENTION HOW EXPENSIVE IT IS. MY MECHANIC UPON REALIZING THAT I NEEDED A SUB-FRAME WAS TRYING TO SEE IF HE COULD GET ME A USED ONE BECAUSE HE KNOWS HOW EXPENSIVE THOSE PARTS ARE. HE ALSO KNOWS THAT I TRAVEL IN MY VAN WITH MY FOSTER KIDS AND THAT IN ITSELF MAKES THE VEHICLE UNSAFE FOR BOTH ME AND THE CHILDREN. MY QUESTION IS: IS THERE A RECALL OB THE FORD WINDSTAR SE 1999 VANS? UPON READING OVER THE INTERNET THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION THAT IS GOING ON WITH THESE FORDS. I WOUILD PEERSONALLY LIKE TO KNOW IF THE FORD COMPANY EVEE GOT EVOUGH COMPLAINTS TO LABEL THIS IMPORTANT EVOUGH TO DO A RECALL ON THIS MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR? I JUST PURCHASED THE 1999 FORD WINSTAR AND. 2 MONTHS LATER I WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND THE REAR AXLE BEEM BROKE CAUSING ME TO LOOAE CONTROL. I AM JUST NOW FINDING OUT ABOUT THE RECALL PLEASE ADVISE THIS I S MY ONLY VEHICLE

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER (MANDERBACH FORD, 4450 5TH STREET HWY, TEMPLE, PA 19560) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRAME WAS STRESSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 108,000.

THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS DETACHED FROM VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FRONT FRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
DANCING SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE, AND OTHER GAUGES IN THE CLUSTER WHILE IN MOTION. CAN ALSO MALFUNCTION WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING.
THIS VEHICLE WAS SERVICED AT 102,654 MILES, IN MARCH-APRIL OF 2011 BY KOONS FORD OF MARYLAND, (INVOICE#W70829, DATED MAY 5, 2011) IN RESPONSE TO FORD RECALL, RELATED TO "BROKEN FRONT SUBFRAME" AND "COLLAPSING REAR AXLE".--FRONT SUBFRAME WAS, AT THAT TIME, BROKEN ON THE RIGHT SIDE, DUE TO RUSTING. REPLACEMENT WAS NOT DONE, INSTEAD IT WAS PATCHED VIA A BOLTED TOGETHER "CLAMSHELL" REINFORCING DEVICE. IT NOW HAS BECOME APPARENT THAT AFTER USING THE VEHICLE AFTER THIS INITIAL FRAME SEPARATION, THE METAL OF THE LEFT SIDE WAS UNDULY STRESSED, AND HAS NOW BROKEN AT ITS WELDMENT POINT, RESULTING IN AN UNSAFE VEHICLE, THAT SWERVES TO THE LEFT, IF BRAKES ARE APPLIED WHILE IN MOTION ON THE STREET OR OTHER ROADWAY. WHEELS ARE NO LONGER KEPT IN ALIGNMENT, WITH LEFT FRONT WHEEL FREE TO MOVE TO THE FRONT OR REAR, IN RESPONSE TO APPLIED STRESS! THIS SUBFRAME FAILURE AFFECTED MANY SUCH VEHICLES, AND IT HAS BECOME EVIDENT THAT INSPECTION AND REPAIR WAS INADEQUATE, RESULTING IN A NEW, UNSAFE CONDITION! (SUBFRAME SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED, DUE TO STRESS!)-PHOTOS ARE ATTACHED, SHOWING DISPLACED FRAME, AND SEPARATED WELD JOINT.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 224,000.

WHILE PULLING OUT OF GAS STATION IHEAR NOISE AND SMELL RUBBER BURNING.CAREFULLY DRIVE 3 BLOCKS TO MY HOUSE.NOTICE REAR TIRES LEANING INTO WHEEL WELLS.I THEN SEE BROKEN AXLE.FORD SAID AXLE REINFORCEMENT BRACKETS WERE INSTALLED PROPERLY 7 MONTHS AGO UNDER RECALL.I HAVE NO MONEY TO FIX.

MY WINDSTAR 1999 HAS ONLY 100,000 MILES ON IT, LESS WHEN I BOUGHT IT, AND AT THAT TIME I WAS INFORMED OF THE REAR AXEL RECALL. I REVIEWED THE DATA, CONCERNING THE SAFETY RECALL WHICH ENDS AT THE END OF OCT 2016 AND WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF PASSENGERS AND OTHERS IF AN ACCIDENT SHOULD HAPPEN WITHIN THE NEXT 5-10 YRS,(WHICH HOW LONG I HOPE TO HAVE THIS). BEING INFORMED I HAD MY CLOSEST FORD DEALERSHIP REPLACE THE REAR, AND THEY BILLED MY $300.00.......THIS IS WRONG, I SHOULD BE REIMBURSED.

JUST A FEW MINUTES AFTER STARTING MY 1999 WINDSTAR, IT LEAKS FUEL FROM THE FITTINGS (FOR THE FUEL LINES) ON TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP. I AM A MECHANIC AND THIS IS NOT SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN. THE FITTINGS HAVE A SEAM THAT HAS OPENED UP BECAUSE OF A DEFECT IN WORKMANSHIP. THERE IS A STRONG ODOR OF GAS AND A LARGE PUDDLE OF GAS UNDER THE VEHICLE. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS FIRE HAZARD. I BELIEVE FORD GOT OVER ON THE NHTSA AND THE AMERICAN CONSUMER. TYPICALLY THE CONSUMER WILL HAVE THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED BEFORE THEIR MANUFACTURING FLAW IS DISCOVERED. ALSO, THERE WAS A RECALL ON DIFFERENT YEAR MODELS AND ONLY IN CERTAIN STATES. I DON'T SEE HOW "WHAT STATE YOU LIVE IN" HAS TO DO WITH A SPLIT IN PLASTIC ON THE TOP OF YOUR GAS TANK. I WILL UPLOAD PICTURES OF THE FLAWS ON THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK FITTINGS.
THE REPAIR FORD PROVIDED DOES NOT RESOLVE OR HELP WITH THE REAR AXLES FAILURE. THIS VEHICLE NEVER RUNS IN THE WINTER SALT AND SLOP STILL FAILED. FORD SHOULD REPLACE "ALL" OF THESE REAR AXLES. STRUGGLING WITH FORD TO GET THIS AXLE REPLACED. THEY DON'T MAKE IT EASY.
BROKEN REAR AXLE.
I WAS DRIVING TO WORK WITH MY WIFE AND AS WE WERE COMING OVER A SMALL HUMP THE BACK AXEL SNAPPED. IF I HAD NOT BEEN DECELERATING COMING DOWN THE HILL THEN I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR AND BRING IT TO A STOP.
FRONT SUB FRAME, PASSENGER SIDE REAR MOUNT COMPLETELY ROTTED AWAY.THE RECALL "FIX IT CLAMP ON PIECE" DOES NOTHING AS THERE IS NO FRAME LEFT TO CONNECT TO. DEALER SERVICE MANAGER CLAIMED IT BROKE FROM THE TRANSMISSION MOUNT BEING ROTTED AWAY. WHEN CONFRONTED THAT THE MOUNT WAS SOUND, ADMITTED IT WASN'T RUSTED , BUT DID NOTHING TO SUBSTANTIATE MY CLAIM TO THE FRAME RUSTING AWAY. STILL MAKES A CLUNKING SOUND WHEN TURNING. IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND IS PARKED TILL WE HEAR BACK FROM FORD .
THE DEALER LOCATED IN THE SANDY SPRING REJECTED TO THE TAKE REMEDY ACTION ON THE RECALL 09S09. I COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THE ODOMETER IS MALFUNTIONING WHEN IT IS IN OPERATION. IT SUDDENLY CAUSE UNKNOWN ACCELERATION WHEN USING THE CRUISE CONTROL. IT IS ALSO FOUND OUT THE BRAKE HOSE IS LEAKING AS RESULTS OF THE SPEED CONTROL MODIFICATION SYSTEM BY THE LOCAL MECHANIC SHOP.

THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V194000 (SUSPENSION). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 185,000.
