TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 2500 HD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED TWO MONTHS AGO FOR THE FUEL FILTER HOUSING, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO IMMEDIATELY STALL. SINCE JULY 3, 2009, THE FAILURE HAS BEEN RECURRING WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH. GM STATED THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE ANY PARTS AVAILABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE DUE TO SO MANY CONSUMERS WHO WERE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE. GM IS RESEARCHING AN ALTERNATIVE TO REPAIRING THE FUEL HOUSING FAILURE. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,000. 2003 GMC SIERRA - INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT. SECOND FAILURE OF THE STEERING SHAFT, TRUCK HAS ONLY 56,000 MILES. ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT SHAFT FAILED AT 26,000 MILES AND WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS IN VARIOUS GM TRUCK INTERNET FORUMS. A NEW, IMPROVED REPLACEMENT PART IS NOW AVAILABLE, GM PART #19153614. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL TO FORCE GM TO REPLACE THE FIRST GENERATION PART. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY '03 GMC SIERRA 2500HD ON A HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 65MPH, WHEN I HAD TO SLOW DOWN, TO AVOID HITTING A VEHICLE SLOWING DOWN IN FRONT OF ME. I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES, NO HARDER THAN I NORMALLY WOULD, AND THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, WITH VERY LITTLE TO NO STOPPING ACTION FROM THE BRAKES. I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN BY DOWNSHIFTING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP, WHILE PULLING ONTO THE SHOULDER. MY TRUCK HAD TO BE TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE REAR BRAKE LINE ALONG THE DRIVERS' SIDE FRAME RAIL HAD RUPTURED DUE TO CORROSION. MY EMERGENCY BRAKE ASSEMBLY ALSO HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST ON IT, AS WELL AS DEFECTIVE BRAKE SHOES. THE TOTAL COST TO REPAIR THE BRAKE LINE CAME TO APPROXIMATELY $450.00, AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE REPLACEMENT CAME TO AROUND $900.00. THE REST OF THE BRAKE LINES ARE ALSO VERY CORRODED, AND SHOULD BE REPLACED. I WAS QUOTED A PRICE OF $1,450 TO REPLACE THE REMAINING BRAKE LINES ON THE TRUCK. *TR
MY 2003 GMC SIERRA 1500 SPEEDOMETER DOESN'T WORK. IT SHOWS HIGH SPEEDS AFTER THE TRUCK IS SHUT OFF. IT SEEMS TO WORK IN WARM WEATHER BUT DOESN'T WORK IN COLD WEATHER. NOT SURE WHEN THE SPEEDOMETER IS ACCURATE. *TR
MY 2003 GMC 1500 EXTENDED CAB PICKUP'S INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IS NOT WORKING. SPEEDOMETER DOESN'T EVEN WORK. THIS IS NOT SAFE. I HAVE TO PARK MY TRUCK, OR EVEN GET IT TAKEN FOR SPEEDING. NOT TO MENTION IF THERE IS AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE GM HAS A FAULTY PART. THAT IS NOT FAIR. I AND THOUSANDS OF OTHERS HAVE COMPLAINED TO THEM BUT NO SOLUTION. PLUS I HAVE LESS THAN 70,000 MILES ON MY TRUCK. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WOULD NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE FUEL GAUGE AND SPEEDOMETER WERE BOTH INOPERABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000.
DURING AN EMERGENCY STOP ON HIGHWAY FROM APPROX. 45MPH, DUE A TRACTOR TRAILER SUDDENLY STOPPING, ABS BRAKE SYSTEM STARTED TO FLUCTUATE, BUT TRUCK DID NOT STOP NORMALLY. AVOIDED COLLISION BY VEERING TO SIDE OF ROAD. LEFT FRONT BRAKE LINE, AT CLIP NEAR WHEEL, LEAKED BRAKE FLUID THEREBY PREVENTING QUICK STOP. BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR AFTERWARDS, THERE WAS SEEMED TO BE NO SECONDARY HYDRAULIC SYSTEM PRESSURE FOR REAR BRAKES. EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS HARDLY EFFECTIVE.TURNS OUT ALL BRAKE LINES ARE SEVERELY CORRODED IN NEARLY ALL AREAS, EVEN UNDER HOOD. TRUCK HAS 50,000 MILES AND IS 6 YEARS OLD. HAVE ALSO PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED SUDDEN POWER STEERING FAILURE DUE TO POWER STEERING LINE CORROSION AND FLUID LOSS. POWER STEERING SYSTEM PROVIDES HYDRAULIC BOOST FOR BRAKES, THEREFORE BRAKES ARE IMPACTED ALSO. BRAKE AND POWER STEERING LINES SEEM TO BE MADE OF STEEL WITH INCORRECT OR POOR ALLOYS, THEREBY ACTING LIKE A SACRIFICIAL ANODE ON THE TRUCK, AS EVIDENCED BY THE RUST THROUGHOUT THE LINES, VS. LOCALIZED RUST. BRAKE LINES AND POWER STEERING LINES HAVE BEEN REPLACED. STILL HAVE SEVERAL RUSTY LINES FOR INSPECTION IF NEEDED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 1500 HD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEATER ACTIVATES AUTOMATICALLY AND DOES NOT SHUT OFF AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TURNED OFF. SHE MUST OPEN THE HOOD AND REMOVE THE FUSE FROM THE FUSE BOX TO TURN OFF THE HEAT. BEFORE THE VEHICLE IS RESTARTED, SHE MUST REINSTALL THE FUSE IN THE FUSE BOX ONCE AGAIN. THE DEALER WAS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS ONLY A TSB FOR THIS FAILURE AND NO RECALL. THE CONTACT WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000.
SPEEDOMETER FAILS TO WORK. IT OCCURS CONTINUOUSLY. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
LOSS OF 3RD GEAR. TRIES TO SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR AND JUST RED LINE'S. *TR
2003 GMC SIERRA 1500 PU TRUCK - CORRODED AND FAILING HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINES. THIS TRUCK WAS PURCHASED NEW BY ME IN OCTOBER 2003, AND NOW HAS ONLY 23,700 MILES ON IT. A LINE NEAR THE FUEL TANK, WHICH FEEDS THE REAR WHEEL CALIPERS, RUSTED THROUGH IN JANUARY 2009. OTHER LINES IN NUMEROUS LOCATIONS ALSO SHOW SIGNS OF CORROSION WHICH WILL LEAD TO FUTURE FAILURES. MECHANICS IN THIS AREA TELL ME THIS IS VERY COMMON, EVEN ON SOME NEWER GMC (AND SIMILAR CHEVROLET) VEHICLES. SOME OF THESE MECHANICS REPLACE THE FAULTY LINES WITH TUBING WHICH IS MORE CORROSION-RESISTANT THAN PROVIDED BY THE MANUFACTURER. A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, ONE OF THE REAR, REAR WHEEL EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLES ON THIS VEHICLE ALSO FAILED DUE TO CORROSION, AND THE OTHER ONE SHOWED SIGNS OF THE SAME FAILURE IMPENDING. BOTH WERE REPLACED. A SERIOUS, FUNDAMENTAL AND COMPOUND HAZARD EXISTS UNDER THIS SCENARIO. THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO RECALL THEE VEHICLES AND REPLACE ALL CRITICAL BRAKE COMPONENTS SUBJECT TO CORROSIVE FAILURES WITH CORROSION-PROOF (OR AT LEAST HIGHLY CORROSION-RESISTANT) PARTS. *TR
2003 GMC SIERRA 1500 SPEEDOMETER FAILED -- DRIFTED FULLY UPSCALE. NO PRECURSOR - WAS DRIVING STEADY AT 45 MPH. 93000 MILES ON VEHICLE. FIRST TIME FAILURE - BUT IT IS A HARD FAILURE - READING >120 MPH WITH CAR SHUTOFF IN DRIVEWAY. I ADJUSTED MY SPEED DOWN TO BE BELOW WHAT I HOPED WOULD MEET THE SPEED LIMIT. IT APPEARS GMC HAS ISSUED SERVICE NOTICES ON THIS ... I FOUND THE FOLLOWING ON THE INTERNET: SUBJECT:BULLETIN GMP07-174 - SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT #07187 --- SOME CUSTOMERS OF 2003-2004 MODEL YEAR CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, AND ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, AND TAHOE; AND GMC SIERRA, ENVOY, YUKON, AND YUKON XL VEHICLES HAVE REPORTED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL (IP) CLUSTER GAUGES STICK, FLUTTER, OR BECOME INOPERATIVE. THIS MAY CAUSE INACCURATE READINGS, INCLUDING THE SPEEDOMETER AND FUEL GAUGE. *TR
MY SPEEDO WAS ACTING ERRATICALLY AND FINALLY HAS STOP WORKING AT ALL. IT HAPPENED OUT OF NOWHERE AND I AM HEARING ALOT OF COMPLAINTS FROM FRIENDS AND THE COMPANY I WORK FOR WHO HAS SEVERAL OF THESE VEHICLES THEY ARE ALL GOING BAD. MY VEHICLE IS 03 GMC SIERRA AND MOST THE OTHERS I KNOW OF ARE SIMILAR TRUCKS AND SUVS. I HAVE BEEN PULLED OVER FOR SPEEDING TWICE NOW BUT HAVE NEVER BEEN PULLED OVER FOR SPEEDING UNTIL MY SPEEDO QUIT WORKING. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A RECALL I HERE THIS IS A EXPENSIVE PROBLEM TO FIX . *TR
THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ON A 2003 GMC SIERRA 1500 PICKUP TRUCK FAILS UNEXPECTEDLY. THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THE STEPPER MOTORS AND THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS ABOUT IT. CERTAINLY, ONE HAS TO KNOW THE SPEED THEY ARE TRAVELING,ESPECIALLY IN SCHOOL AND CONSTRUCTION ZONES. MARK THESE WORDS "SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED" THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS FILED WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND YOU AND YET NOTING IS DONE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. IS IT GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE A FATALITY BEFORE A RECALL IS ISSUED. NO WONDER THE CAR COMPANIES ARE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE!!! *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA. WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 10 MPH IN A BUSY PARKING LOT, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL BEFORE COMPLETING A LEFT TURN AND FELT THE BRAKES SHAKING. THE BRAKE PEDAL EXTENDED TO THE FLOOR. HE WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE TO SAFETY AND CONTINUED TO APPLY THE BRAKES. HE ALLOWED THE VEHICLE TO COAST UNTIL IT CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED DUE TO CORROSION OF THE BRAKE LINES. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT ASSIST WITH THE REPAIRS DUE TO THE CORROSION. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 87,974. UPDATED 12/17/08. *LJ THE REAR MAIN SEAL WAS LEAKING OIL. THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WAS REPLACED, DUE TO THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATING. UPDATED 12/18/08. *JB
SPEEDOMETER , FUEL GAUGE ETC. WENT AT 93,000 MILES. GMC KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM AND WILL ONLY FIX IT ON A LIMITED BASIS. NOT EVERY ONE WAS INFORMED OF THIS PROBLEM AND THEY WILL ONLY FIX IT IF YOU ARE UNDER 70K MILES. *TR
ON NOV. 14 2008 MY 2003 GMC SIERRA 2500 HD 4X4 BRAKE LINES FAILED. THE GMC DEALER SERVICE CONSULTANT STATED THAT 1 OF MY FORWARD LINES HAD FAILED DUE TO CORROSION AND THAT 3 MORE LINES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO CORROSION. THAT THEY WOULD FAIL AT ANY TIME. WITH ONLY 56,292 MILES ON THE TRUCK AND NOT LIVING ON THE GULF COAST I WAS SURPRISED TO SAY THE LEAST. I HAD TO PAY $ 1209.69 TO GET THE LINES REPLACED AT THE DEALER. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 2500. WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 45 MPH, THE SPEEDOMETER DISPLAYED 120 MPH. THE CONTACT SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTED IT TO SEE IF THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD RESET ITSELF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY WOULD NOT PERFORM REPAIRS BECAUSE IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 104,571.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 2500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEATER LIGHT FAILED FIRST FOLLOWED BY THE DRIVER'S SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTING. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS NOT COVERED. THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED LATER AND THE ENTIRE PANEL WENT BLACK. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.UPDATED 06/17/09. *LJ THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND GAUGES FAILED COMPLETELY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 2500 HD. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CONTINUED TO FLASH ON AND OFF. IN ADDITION, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS ACTIVATED AND SMOKE WAS NOTICED UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. THE CONTACT HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE NOTICING THE SMOKE. THE HOOD COULD NOT BE OPENED AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. TEN MINUTES LATER, THE VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES AND DESTROYED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 65,000. UPDATED 09/25/08 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED IT WAS A POSSIBLE FUEL LINE FAILURE. UPDATED 09/26/08. *JB
GAUGES STOPPED WORKING. NO LIGHTS, NO ODOMETER, NO INFORMATION AT ALL. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 2500. THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE COMING FROM THE WHEEL BEARINGS. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE WHEEL BEARINGS FAILED. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,149.
THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAS BEEN FAILING ONE GAUGE AT THE TIME SINCE 4 YEARS AGO, FINALLY IT QUIT ALL TOGETHER, I CALLED GM AND MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THEY CAN DO BUT TO CHARGE ME FOR CHECK UP AND POSSIBLY GET ME A NEW CLUSTER FOR 400.00 WHAT A JOKE. I KNOW GM HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT NOTHING GETS DONE. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO GET GM TO GET THIS PROBLEMS SERVICED WITH NO COST, AFTER ALL IT'S THEIR REPUTATION.... I WON'T BUY ANOTHER GM VEHICLE. *TR
SPEEDOMETER WAS WORKING FINE AND THEN JUST COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING. CHECKED ON RECALLS TO SEE IF THIS WAS ANOTHER DEFECT BUT SAW THAT THERE IS A LAWSUIT GOING ON WITH SEVERAL PEOPLE WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. HAVE NOT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 2500. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE VEHICLE STALLED, LOST POWER, AND THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000.
INTERMITTENT AND ERRATIC SPEEDOMETER PROBLEM. SPEEDOMETER WILL SOMETIMES APPEAR TO REGISTER CORRECTLY, OTHER TIMES WILL BE INOPERATIVE, AND AT OTHER TIMES WILL REGISTER THE WRONG SPEED. THIS HAS BEEN ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS AT NIGHT WHEN IT IS DIFFICULT TO USE EXTERIOR VISUAL CUES OF ACTUAL SPEED TO KNOW THAT THE SPEEDOMETER IS GIVING THE WRONG INFORMATION. THIS HAS LED TO SEVERAL NEAR ACCIDENTS DUE TO INACCURATE KNOWLEDGE OF SPEED WHEN APPROACHING INTERSECTIONS AND CURVES. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 2500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE CONTACT THEN DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED. THE DEALER WAS NOT INFORMED AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000 AND THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 21,000.
CLUNKING NOISE AND VIBRATION IN STEERING COLUMN AT LOW SPEEDS ON BUMPY ROADS, ESPECIALLY WHEN TURNING CORNERS. FEELS LIKE SERIOUS FRONT-END MECHANICAL PROBLEMS. CURRENT MILEAGE ON MY 2003 GMC SIERRA IS 60,000. I LEARNED FROM GM THAT THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED AT 24,000 MILES UNDER WARRANTY, BUT IT NEEDED REPLACING AGAIN. $207 FOR NEW SHAFT AND $92 LABOR. NEW, IMPROVED PART # IS 19153614. IF GM KNEW THE ORIGINAL SHAFT WAS DEFECTIVE, WHY DIDN'T THEY HAVE TO RECALL IT? *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 GMC SIERRA 2500 HD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED AND PREVENTED HIM FROM KNOWING HOW FAST HE IS TRAVELING, OR ANY OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THE FAILURE. THE VIN AND RECALL NUMBER WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.
SUMMER 2007 WE RECEIVED A NOTICE FROM GMC FOR OUR 2003 GMC SIERRA THAT STATED "YOUR VEHICLE COULD DEVELOP A CONDITION WHERE ONE OR MORE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGE NEEDLES MAY STICK, FLUTTER, OR BECOME INOPERATIVE. THIS MAY CAUSE INACCURATE READINGS, INCLUDING THE SPEEDOMETER AND THE FUEL GAUGE." THEY OFFER TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM IF IT OCCURS IN VEHICLES WITHIN 7 YEARS OR 70,000 MILES, WHICHEVER IS LESS. OUR GMC SIERRA DEVELOPED THIS CONDITION RECENTLY AT 5 YEARS AND 90,000. THE SPEEDOMETER BEGAN TO DISPLAY INACCURATE SPEEDS AND EVENTUALLY STARTED ERRATICALLY PULSING AND SOMETIMES DISPLAYING NO SPEED. THIS IS VERY UNSAFE TO HAVE THIS HAPPEN WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING. SHE IS IN THE PROCESS OF FILING ARBITRATION AGAINST THE MANUFACTURER. THE VIN AND POWERTRAIN WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 45,000.

ON OCTOBER 5, 2007, THE SPEEDOMETER DISPLAYED AN INACCURATE SPEED OF 125 MPH. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A NOTICE REGARDING A VOLUNTARY RECALL FOR THE SPEEDOMETER. ONLY VEHICLES LESS THAN SIX YEARS OLD OR WITH FEWER THAN 70,000 MILES WOULD RECEIVE A FREE REMEDY. THE CONTACT'S MILEAGE WAS 115,000; THEREFORE, HE WAS INELIGIBLE FOR THE FREE REMEDY. THE STEERING COLUMN MAKES A POPPING SOUND AS IF SOMETHING IS LOOSE IN IT. THE PROBLEM WAS SUPPOSEDLY FIXED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER WARRANTY. AFTER WARRANTY RAN OUT THE PROBLEM CAME BACK. I WAS THEN CHARGED $60 TO GET THE STEERING COLUMN GREASED. THIS WORKED TEMPORARILY AS BEFORE. *TR
2003 GMC SIERRA 1500 WITH 70K MILES. HAVE HAD PROBLEMS ON DIFFERENT OCCASIONS WITH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES AT LOW SPEEDS. HAD TO REPLACE SENSORS ON ALL 3 OCCASIONS. NEEDLE MAY COME TO REST AT ANY POINT ON THE DIAL WHEN VEHICLE IS STOPPED, AND THE REST POINT MAY OR MAY NOT CHANGE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS UNDERWAY, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO ESTIMATE SPEED (E.G., NEEDLE MAY INITIALLY INDICATE 30 MPH AT REST, BUT ACTUAL SPEED UNDERWAY ISN'T NECESSARILY 30 MPH LESS THAN INDICATED BECAUSE THE REST POINT MAY HAVE CHANGED). AND WHEN THE DIAL ZEROS AT 120 MPH, THE TRUCK EFFECTIVELY HAS NO SPEEDOMETER AT ALL RATHER THAN JUST AN INACCURATE ONE. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GM WARNING OF POTENTIAL INSTRUMENT FAILURES AND OFFERING FREE REPAIR ON VEHICLES WITH LESS THAN 70K MILES; AN EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE WITH GM CONFIRMED THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR MINE FOR FREE OR AT REDUCED COST. INTERNET DISCUSSIONS AND ADS FOR INSTRUMENT REPAIRS REVEAL THIS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM ON A RANGE OF '03-'06 GM VEHICLES. THE GM DEALER I CALLED WILL FIX THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR $500 -- ROUGHLY 3 TIMES WHAT REPAIR SERVICES ADVERTISING ON THE INTERNET CHARGE TO REPLACE ALL THE DEFECTIVE STEPPER MOTORS IN THE CLUSTER. THIS PROBLEM IS CERTAINLY SAFETY-RELATED (THINK OF MISJUDGING SPEED IN A ROLLOVER-PRONE VEHICLE GOING INTO A SHARP CURVE), AND TO THE DEGREE THAT IS VIRTUALLY INEVITABLE ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, GM SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL RATHER THAN A LIMITED "SECRET WARRANTY". *TR
