ENGINE LIGHT WON'T TURN OFF! OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, I HAVE TAKEN THIS IN TO MY MECHANIC AND HE CHECKS IT AND FINDS NOTHING WRONG AND TURNS IT OFF. A COUPLE WEEKS LATER, IT COMES ON AGAIN! I'M SICK OF THIS. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A GOOD CAR. BUT I THINK THE 1998 IS A LEMON. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD EX. THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL ON THE EGR VALVE. THE HONDA DEALER STATED THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE EXCEEDED 85,000 MILES AND WAS OVER 8 YEARS OLD IT WAS NO LONGER ELIGIBLE FOR SAFETY RECALL REPAIRS. THE GAS MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE WAS POOR, AND FUMES ENTERED THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE LIGHT CONSTANTLY ILLUMINATED, AND THE VEHICLE UNDERWENT THREE OR FOUR DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. THE TESTS VERIFIED THE FAILURE TO BE THE EGR VALVE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE 120,000. AK
LAST AUGUST GOT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CHECKED; CAR SLIPPE D FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR AND ACCELERATE D BADLY. DEALERSHIP DIDN?T FIND THE PROBLEM. I HAD THEM DO A TRANSMISSION FLUSH ANYWAY . CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT AWAY BUT CAME BACK ON LATER. *AK AROUND MARCH 31, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AGAIN, HAD ME PAY $600 SOMETHING AND STILL ORIGINAL PROBLEM NOT FIXED OR DIAGNOSED APRIL 7, 2007 WENT BACK SPENT CLOSE TO $900, ORIGINAL PROBLEM STILL NOT SOLVED A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER, AFTER ALMOST GETTING IN AN ACCIDENT TWICE BECAUSE THE CAR DECIDES TO NOT RESPOND TO ACCELERATION AND INSTEAD DECELERATE ON THE MAJOR HIGHWAY. FEARFUL OF MY LIFE AND THAT THIS WASN?T A SAFE CAR I TOOK IT BACK IN TO HONDA AGAIN AND FINALLY THIS TIME THEY DIAGNOSE THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND SAY I NEED A NEW ONE AFTER I HAD ALMOST GOTTEN SERIOUSLY INJURED AND SPENT CLOSE TO $1500 ON REPAIR THAT WEREN?T REALLY THE MAIN ISSUE. I AM A COLLEGE STUDENT, I HAD TO BORROW PART OF THE MONEY FROM FAMILY TO MEET UP TO THAT $1500 AND NOW I DON?T HAVE $4000 WHICH IS THE QUOTE FOR THE TRANSMISSION. I?VE ALWAYS HEARD GOOD THINGS FROM HONDA ABOUT SERVICE AND RELIABILITY. RESEARCHING MY PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET I COME ACROSS COUNTLESS ISSUES WITH THE SAME 1998 HONDA TRANSMISSIONS. SEEMS LIKE A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THESE TRANSMISSIONS AND HONDA SHOULD TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY IN POOR WORKMANSHIP AND RECALL THESE TRANSMISSIONS. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY CLOSE TO $4000 FOR SOMETHING THAT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN IN THE FIRST PLACE SEEING THAT IT IS A VERY COMMON AND WIDESPREAD ISSUE WITH THIS MODEL YEAR TRANSMISSION. THEY SHOULD REPLACE THEM FREE OF CHARGE BECAUSE IT IS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE.
FIRST OF ALL, THE ELECTRICAL IGNITION SWITCH HAD TO BE REPLACE. EVERY TIME THE CAR IS STARTED UP, U HAVE TO KEEP TRYING IN ORDER FOR IT TO CRANK UP. IF IT DOES CRANK, WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, THE CAR WOULD CUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. THAT WAS VERY DANGEROUS. YOU WOULD HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL & KEEP TURNING THE SWITCH UNTIL IT FINALLY CRANKS BACK UP. NEXT, THERE IS THE PROBLEM WITH THE EXTERIOR LIGHTING. THE FUSE BLOWS ABOUT 3 TIMES A WEEK & HAS TO BE REPLACED SO THAT THE HEADLIGHT & BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD WORK. EVERYTIME THE FUSE BLOW & THE LIGHTS STOP WORKING, THE CAR WONT GET INTO GEAR UNLESS U UNLOCK THE GEAR SHIFT EVERYTIME U PUT IT IN PARK. THEN THERE IS THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE PUT 2 TRANSMISSIONS IN THIS CAR IN LESS THAT A YEAR. WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THIS CAR? *TR
MY CAR SHUT OFF WHEN I WAS IN THE HIGHWAY DOING 60 M.P.H, THIS CAR WAS RECALL IN 2002 FOR A IGNITION SWITCH THAT WAS BAD. IT WAS REPLACED BUT UNFORTUNATELY I'M HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. I'M VERY THANKFUL THAT IT WAS EARLY IN THE DAY AND NOT RUSH HOUR OR ANYTHING COULD HAD HAPPEN.
TL*- THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD, AND STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY OR IN THE CITY THE VEHICLE SOMETIMES LOST POWER. NEITHER THE WEATHER NOR THE SPEED WERE A FACTOR AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. THE FIRST FAILURE WAS AT 90,000 MILES, AND HAS EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE SOMETIMES TWICE A DAY. THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE AROUND 5-15 TIMES A MONTH. BEFORE ANY OF THE INCIDENTS THERE HAS BEEN NO PRIOR INDICATION. THE CONTACT TOOK VEHICLET TO THE DEALER, AND THEY STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE ANY FAILURE IN THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT NEXT TIME THE CONTACT HAD THE SAME FAILURE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AFTER IT STALLED.*AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLS AND HAS TO BE RESTARTED EACH DAY. HE ALSO STATED THAT OCCASIONALLY THE VEHICLE DOES NOT START ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 02V120000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH) IN SEPTEMBER OF 2002. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH FAILED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 130,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 127,000. I BOUGHT MY 1998 HONDA AT THE SAN FRANCISCO HONDA DEALERSHIP IN SAN FRANCISCO AND DID ALL OF MY MAINTENANCE WORK AT THEIR SHOP. IT HAS 70,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS HAD NO SERIOUS PROBLEMS. ON SUNDAY I WAS CROSSING THE BAY BRIDGE FROM OAKLAND INTO THE CITY AND THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AND THE ENGINE REVVED LIKE I WAS IN A DRAG CAR RACE AND LURCHED FORWARD AND LOST POWER AND THEN ACCELERATED VIOLENTLY ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE BRIDGE. I LITERALLY ALMOST GOT REAR ENDED A FEW TIMES AND I AM LUCKY TO BE ALIVE! I WAS ABLE TO GET MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD TO CHARGE ME A $140 NON-REFUNDABLE "DIAGNOSTIC FEE" TO DETERMINE WHAT WAS WRONG BUT THEY SUSPECTED IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. I GOT A CALL THE NEXT DAY LETTING ME KNOW THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING AND THAT IT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $5,000 PARTS AND LABOR AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO ORDER THE TRANSMISSION AND WOULD PROBABLY TAKE 2 WEEKS TO EVEN GET IT? THE WARRANTY I HAD PURCHASED HAD,OF COURSE, EXPIRED AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH I TRIED TO GET A REASON FOR THIS HAPPENING THEY JUST SAID "IT HAPPENS". SO AFTER SPENDING $17,000+ ON A CAR AND MAINTAINING IT I NOW HAVE A DANGEROUS AND EXPENSIVE LEMON. I PAID MY $140 BLOOD MONEY AND GOT MY CAR OUT OF THERE AND DECIDING WHAT TO DO NEXT? *JB
I HAVE A 1998 HONDA ACCORD. THE SRS LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR SOME TIME, AND I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THE ISSUES OF THEM WITH THE 98-2002 ACCORDS UNTIL JUST NOW. MANY PEOPLE HAVE FILED COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE BECAUSE HONDA REFUSES TO CORRECT THE ISSUE. IT MAKES DRIVING HE VEHICLE DANGEROUS BECAUSE YOU NO LONGER HAVE YOUR SECONDARY BACKUP SYSTEM TO HELP KEEP YOU SAFE IN A ACCIDENT. AND FROM WHAT I AM UNDERSTANDING IT ALSO MINIMIZES THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SEAT BELT AS WELL. IF THE NHTSA GROUP IS AWARE OF THIS AND HAS NOT FORCED HONDA TO DO RECALL WORK ON THIS MATTER THAN SHAME ON YOU. WE ARE PUTTING OUR LIVES IN YOUR HANDS TO MAKE THESE COMPANIES KEEP THEIR SAFETY TRACK RECORD. MY ACCORD HAS NEARLY 139K MILES AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN MAINTAINED WELL. I FEEL AS IF I HAVE HAD A INJUSTICE DONE TO ME, AND NOW I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHEN OR IF I GET IN A ACCIDENT WHETHER OR NOT MY AIR BAG WILL WORK, AND ACCORDING TO OTHERS WITH HE SAME PROBLEM IT DOESN'T. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD. THE CONTACT IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE WITH HIS VEHICLE AS NOTED IN RECALL # 02V120000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH). HE HAS TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE HONDA DEALER FOR INSPECTION, HOWEVER, THE PAPERWORK DOES NOT PROVIDE A REMEDY OR STATE WHETHER OR NOT THE COMPONENT HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPLACED. THE CONTACT WOULD LIKE CLARIFICATION REGARDING THIS AS WELL AS THE REMEDY FOR THE RECALL. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 153,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
THE CLEAR COAT ON MY BLACK 1998 HONDA ACCORD PEELED OFF LEAVING THE CAR LOOKING LIKE IT HAS A SKIN DISORDER. THE PROBLEM IS MOST PREVALENT ON THE HOOD, ROOF AND TRUNK, WHILE THE DOORS, BUMPERS AND QUARTERPANELS SEEM UNAFFECTED. THE PROBLEM HAS PERSISTED FOR YEARS, AND I HAD IT ALSO WITH A PREVIOUS 1994 ACCORD. THE PAINT JUST FAILS AFTER 6 OR 8 YEARS--VERY DISAPPOINTING PERFORMANCE. *TR
TL* - THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING THE 1998 HONDA ACCORD AT 45 MPH THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE CONTACT PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE HESITATED THEN SURGED FORWARD. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, WHO RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON THE VEHICLE AND RECOMMENDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE FAILURE HAD OCCURRED 45 TIMES.*AK
1998 HONDA ACCORD WITH TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS CUSTOMER STATES THAT SHE WANTS A RESPONSE**CC THE CONSUMER STATED THAT SHE WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH HER VEHICLE SO SHE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. WHEN SHE TOOK THE CAR IN, THE DEALER INFORMED HER THAT SHE NEEDED HER TRANSMISSION REBUILT. THE CONSUMER STATED IT WAS A SHOCK BEING AS THOUGH THE VEHICLE ONLY HAD 72,714 MILES ON IT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE SHOP AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT FOR $2700. THE CONSUMER STATED A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER SHE WAS IN FACT HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AS BEFORE AND RETURNED TO THE VEHICLE FOR SERVICE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER STATED THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. *TR
1998 HONDA ACCORD EX-V6. TRANSMISSION FAILURE. 1. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND SUDDENLY THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO DISENGAGE AND RE-ENGAGE BY ITSELF AND THEN LOCKED THE TRANSMISSION. 2. BEFORE THE FAILURE, I STARTED TO NOTICE THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPAGE AROUND 55,000 MILES. I BROUGHT IT TO HONDA DEALERSHIP AT AROUND 60,000 MILES AND THEY JUST REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION OIL. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM WAS JUST GETTING WORSE. 3. AFTER THE TRANSMISSION LOCKED UP, I ALMOST LOST CONTROL, I HAVE TO PUT THE TRANSMISSION TO NEUTRAL AND HAD IT TOWED TO HONDA DEALERSHIP. I WAS TOLD THAT TRANSMISSION WAS OUT AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION COST WAS ABOUT $3000 4. I JUST NOTICED THAT THERE WERE SIMILAR RECALL FOR HONDA AND ACURA TRANSMISSION. *TR
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT, THE DRIVER DEPRESSED THE RESUME BUTTON ON THE CRUISE CONTROL WHICH REACTIVATED THE CRUISE CONTROL. THIS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE AND CRASH INTO A WALL. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER WHO DETERMINED THE CRUISE CONTROL WORKED AS DESIGNED.
DURING THE LAST 6 MONTHS I BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY IGNITION LOCKING UP AND CAR WOULD NOT START & OCCASIONALLY THE CAR WOULD STOP RUNNING WHILE IN MOTION FOR NO REASON. THE DASH LIGHTS WOULD ALL FLASH AND THEN LOCK-UP & DIE. I CHECKED ONLINE AND DISCOVERED THERE HAD BEEN TWO RECALLS ON MY 98 HONDA ACCORD LX, IGNITION SWITCH AND INTERLOCK. I PHONED MY LOCAL DEALER, HONDA OF OCALA AND THEY GAVE ME AN APPT. FOR 10/20/06. THEY TOOK A LOOK AT MY CAR AND THEN TRIED TO SELL ME OTHER SERVICES. I ASKED THAT THEY ONLY FIX THE TWO RECALLS AS SCHEDULED. I WAITED FOR 1 1/2 HOURS AND THEN WAS INFORMED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH WAS BAD BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $205.00 IF I WANTED IT FIXED BECAUSE IT HAD ALREADY BEEN FIXED. THEY COULDN'T TELL ME WHERE OR WHEN THIS WAS. I REFUSED TO PAY FOR A RECALL THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DONE FREE OF CHARGE. AFTER MAKING ME WAIT ANOTHER 35 MINUTES MY CAR WAS RETURNED. I ASKED ABOUT THE INTERLOCK RECALL, HAD IT BEEN FIXED? HE SAID NO YOU'LL HAVE TO CALL AND MAKE ANOTHER APPT. THIS APPT. WAS FOR BOTH RECALLS. THEY HAD MY CAR FOR OVER 2 HRS AND DID NOTHING. I WENT HOME AND CALLED HONDA OF AMERICA. I SPOKE WITH A REP THAT TOOK MY COMPLAINT. ON 10/23 I WAS TOLD BY BOTH REPS THAT MY ONLY OPTION WAS PAYING LABOR AND GETTING IT DONE AT HONDA OF OCALA. I DID NOT WANT TO RETURN TO THIS SPECIFIC DEALERSHIP DUE TO THEM TREATING ME SO MISERABLY AT THE FIRST APPT. I HAVE NO RECORDS THAT THIS RECALL WAS EVER FIXED. MY PARENTS WERE THE PREVIOUS OWNER'S AND THEY DON'T EITHER. REGARDLESS THE PART IS OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE AS THIS IS NOT NORMAL AND SHOULD BE COVERED IN FULL, FREE OF CHARGE BY THIS RECALL. *NM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED IN MAY OF 2002 FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 03V423000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH). FIVE YEARS LATER, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALER STATED THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS ALREADY REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL, THEY WOULD NO LONGER ASSUME LIABILITY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 105,000.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ACCELERATING, THE VEHICLE JERKED. WHILE TAKING THE VEHICLE IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE THE DEALER DETERMINED THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE SEAT BELT WAS SLOW TO RETRACT AND THE REAR BRAKES WERE SERVICE. UPDATED 11/30/06. *JB
DRIVING EAST ON TOLL ROAD 408 IN FAR RIGHT LANE GOING APROX. 60 MPH AND TRANSMISSION (B7XA) DOWN SHIFTING LOCKING THE FRONT WHEELS. LOST CONTROL OF THE CAR AND SPUN BACKWARDS ACROSS ALL LEFT LANES OF TRAFFIC AND THEN BACK ACROSS ALL RIGHT LANES OF TRAFFIC AND ALMOST HIT A LIGHT POLE. TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING AND WILL NOT SHIFT CORRECTLY...TRANSMISSION IS FAULTY AND HONDA KNOWS IT BUT WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT A RECALL TO PROTECT PEOPLE/OWNERS. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE VEHICLE, IT INTERMITTENTLY WOULD NOT START WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP, WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM WITH THE STARTER ASSEMBLY. ALTHOUGH A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS PERFORMED, NO FAILURE CODES WERE PRODUCED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED.
KEY WILL NOT START THE CAR - IGNITION PROBLEM - CAR DIES GOING DOWN THE ROAD AND ALL OF THE LIGHTS START TO FLASH. *NM
I AM A OWNER OF 1998 HONDA ACCORD AND HAVE JUST STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY TRANSMISSION KNOCKING, CLICKING WHEN I CHANGE GEARS, AND IT JUMPS OUT OF GEAR AS I AM GOING DOWN A HILL. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THAT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THEY EVEN WAS AWARE OF THE SITUATION WITH THE FAULTY TRANSMISSION THAT THEY HAVE BEEN PUTTING IN PEOPLE CARS, BUT ACT LIKE IT IS NOT A BIG DEAL. YOU THINK YOU ARE BUYING QUALITY WHEN YOU BUY A HONDA, BUT THAT IS NOT THE CASE. I HOPE NO ONE GETS KILLED BEFORE THEY TAKE ACTION. IF I HAVE AN ACCIDENT WHILE DRIVING WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR AND IT LOCKS UP, I WILL BE MOVING ON UP TO THE NEXT STEP BECAUSE I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEY WOULD NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR FAULTY JUNK AND NOT RISK SOME BEING HURT OR EVEN KILLED. *JB
THE CAR IS A 1998 HONDA ACCORD LX V-6 COUPE W/ AUTO TRANS. AND NOW HAS 65700 MILES ON IT. WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS THE ENGINE SOMETIMES DIED. WHEN THIS HAPPENED THE STEERING BECAME DIFFICULT AND THE BRAKES DID NOT FUNCTION WELL. MOST TIMES AFTER THE CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP I WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT. OTHER TIMES WHEN I TRIED TO START THE CAR, IT WOULD START AND THEN IMMEDIATELY DIE. I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT 2- 4 HOURS TO START. AT STILL OTHER TIMES TRYING TO START IT, IT WOULD JUST CRANK ON THE STARTER MOTOR AND NOT START AT ALL. SOMETIMES I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT OVERNIGHT TO SUCCESSFULLY START THE CAR. THESE PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN OCCURRING SINCE 2003, BUT WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO TWO DIFFERENT HONDA DEALERS. THE FIRST MERELY SPRAYED CARP CLEANER INTO THE THROTTLE BODY. THE SECOND KEPT THE CAR FOR THREE DAYS AND REPLACED THE MAIN RELAY. LAST YEAR, I HAD TO HAVE THE ALTERNATOR, WHICH SEIZED UP REPLACED. *NM
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. HAD IT SCANNED AND PRODUCED CODE P0401 - EGR INSUFFICIENT AIRFLOW. THE CONTACT RETURNED TO THE SERVICE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS ONLY GUARANTEED FOR 80,000 MILES. THE CODES ISSUED BY THE MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN REGARDING THE FAILURE WERE P0420, P0505, AND P1456. THE PURCHASE DATE AND POWERTRAIN WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 97,596 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

98' HONDA ACCORD SEDAN- WE PURCHASED IN NOVEMBER OF 2004 AND VEHICLE HAD 44,000 MILES. AFTER A FEW WEEKS OF DRIVING, TRANSMISSION WAS BEGINNING TO SLIP BETWEEN FIRST AND SECOND GEARS. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED WE NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. I CALLED AMERICAN HONDA AND THEY AGREED TO PUT IN A REBUILT TRANSMISSION EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A FEW THOUSAND MILES OUT OF WARRANTY. WE PAID FOR THE LABOR. VEHICLE IS NOW AT 88,000 MILES AND NEEDS ANOTHER NEW TRANSMISSION. SAME PROBLEMS AS BEFORE. CONTACTED AMERICAN HONDA AGAIN AND THEY REFUSE TO HELP. *JB
THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT LIT UP ON A SUNDAY, BUT THE SERVICE DEALER WHO LOOKED AT THE CAR ON MONDAY COULD NOT DETERMINE WHY. A DIAGNOSTIC DEVICE INDICATED A PROBLEM AROUND THE CARBURETOR SO THE TECHNICIAN TURNED OFF THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT AND I WAS TOLD TO DRIVE AROUND FOR AWHILE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENED. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STARTED TO OVERHEAT WHILE DRIVING WITHIN THE CITY. THERE HAD BEEN NO PROBLEMS BEFORE THIS INCIDENT AND ALL REGULAR MAINTENANCE WAS DONE ON THE VEHICLE. WHEN THE CAR OVERHEATED, IT COULD NOT EVEN BE DRIVEN FOR A MILE WITHOUT STOPPING TO LET IT COOL DOWN. THIS WOULD'VE BEEN A SERIOUS PROBLEM IF IT HAD OCCURRED ON THE HIGHWAY BECAUSE THERE WAS NO WARNING AND THE VEHICLE WAS IMMEDIATELY INCAPACITATED. THE SERVICE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE BLOCK HAD CRACKED AND THE ONLY REMEDY WAS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE. THE CAR ONLY HAD 63,000 MILES ON IT, BUT THE COST OF A REBUILT ENGINE (WITH 120,000 MILES ON IT) WAS ALMOST AS MUCH AS THE BLUE BOOK VALUE. SUDDENLY, OUR CAR WAS WORTHLESS WHEN WE EXPECTED IT TO LAST FOR SEVERAL MORE YEARS. THE DEALERSHIP SAW NO REASON TO PROVIDE ANY COMPENSATION. I AM A FIRST HAND OWNER OF A 1998 HONDA ACCORD EX COUPE, THE CAR HAS EXHIBITED FAILURE OF THE IGNITION SWITCH SINCE 2 MONTHS (MARCH 2006) AGO. ONE TIME I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 65 MILES AT FREEWAY 15, ALL THE SUDDEN THE CAR JUST STALL AND LOST ALL POWER; NO DASHBOARD LIGHTS, NO AIR-CONDITIONING AND CAR ENGINE STALL. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS NOT MUCH TRAFFIC AND I WAS ON A DOWNHILL SLOPE, SO THE CAR GAINED SOME MOMENTUM AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL IT TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. THE SAME THING HAPPENED 3 TIMES ON LOCAL STREETS. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC, HE SAID THE IGNITION SWITCH FAILED. HE TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON ACCORD IGNITION SWITCH AND SUGGESTED THAT I CALL HONDA TO FIND OUT THE DETAILS. I DIDN'T RECEIVED ANY NOTICE OF RECALL REGARDING IGNITION SWITCH FAILURE. I DID RECEIVED ONE REGARDING IGNITION SWITCH INTERLOCK OPERATION (CAMPAIGN ID# 03V423000) WHICH I HAD FIXED. I CALL HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE TODAY AND THEY SAID THAT MY VIN# WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL OF THE IGNITION SWITCH FAILURE (CAMPAIGN ID# 02V120000), THEY WILL NOT PAY FOR THE COST OF REPAIR. I HAVE TAKEN MY 1998 HONDA ACCORD LX TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE MY OIL CHANGED. (MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON) I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT MY ENGINE WAS LEAKING OIL, OIL HAD LEAKED THROUGH OUT THE CARS ENTIRE SYSTEM SO THEY FLUSHED OUT AS MUCH OIL AS THEY COULD. I WAS SKEPTICAL SO I WENT TO GET A 2ND AND THIRD OPINION AND IT WAS THE SAME CONSENSUS- I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. MY VEHICLE HAS 134,000 MILES. FOR A USED ENGINE IT WILL COST ABOUT 3,000 FOR A NEW ENGINE 5,000.00 . I WAS TOLD TO THAT I EITHER HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE OR PURCHASE A NEW CAR. AL MONTH LATER I HAD TO TAKE IT BACK FOR MORE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS THERE WAS A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE IN THE GEAR BOX AND THEY FIXED IT. I TOOK IT BACK TWICE SINCE HAVING TRANNY REBUILT NOW ITS A YEAR LATER AND THE CAR BEGAN TO SLIP AND JERK AND NOW THERE IS A METAL SCRAPING NOISE COMING FROM THE GEAR BOX WHEN IN GEAR. LTR EMAILED RE DEFECTIVE AIR BAGS AND SAFETY BELT SHOULDER BELT IN A 1998 HONDA ACCORD, REQUEST A DEFECT INVESTIGATION FOR POSSIBLE RECALL BECAUSE MOM WAS KILLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT ON 10-07-05. *TS THE SEAT BELT FAILED TO PROPERLY RESTRAIN THE CONSUMER DURING THE ACCIDENT WHICH RESULT IN HER HEAD IMPACTING THE STEERING WHEEL. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED DURING THE FIRST IMPACT BUT HAD DEFLATED BY THE TIME THE FINAL IMPACT OCCURRED. THESE FAILURES RESULTED IN FATAL HEAD INJURIES. *NM
