NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Honda Civic. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Fuel pump failed at 87463 miles Making a grinding noise and had to recede the speed from 50 mph to 25 mph to get to my destination. The engine sounded like it was misfiring and engine lines along with errors showed up in the dashboard.
1) What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? ANS: The steering sticks. Yes, it is available for inspection upon request. 2) How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? ANS: By overcompensating when changing lanes. This condition arises on Interstate driving. It has happened since I bought the car. Would have to research dates and mileage. Date/mileage shown below is approximate. 3) Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? ANS: Not to my knowledge. I mentioned it to Honda Cars of Katy 6/1/23. 4) Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? ANS: No. Honda does not acknowledge a problem. 5) Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? ANS: No. There are no warning signals when this occurs.
Fuel injectors failing before 65,000 miles, causing cylinder 1, 2, and 3 misfires consistently. This problem is known by Honda, but was never recalled. This is on all of the 1.5L engine models sold after 2016. They have even created a new part with the necessary flex joints to correct the issue, but charge out of pocket for inevitable and completely unavoidable replacement. This is nearly a $1400 repair from an OEM part that is guaranteed to fail around 60-70k miles. Multiple cylinder misfires have cause complete loss of throttle power and acceleration while driving on multiple occasions, and should provide cause for concern as an inoperable vehicle due to manufacturer quality failure is completely unsafe and should not be pinned on the owner of the vehicle. I have been left with no choice but to save up money, while living paycheck to paycheck in capitalist America, to replace these DEALERSHIP ONLY injectors while risking a flooding of catalytic converter with raw fuel due to system failure. Multiple safety features, including traction control and power steering assistance, are completely inoperable due to these misfires caused by faulty OEM fuel injectors. This issue is a SAFETY concern and also a vehicular health concern. I should not be given the “destroy your vehicle and risk your safety or replace a $1300 part out of pocket” dilemma because of quality failure at production levels.
This car has 56,817 miles and in just the last 500 miles or so, we have noticed that the steering wheel seems to get “sticky” or “notchy” after driving for longer drives—maybe over 20-30 minutes. I don’t notice it on my short 10 minute drive to work. It seems to happen while driving straight. The steering wheel seems to get stuck making little steering adjustments jerky and causing frequent overcorrections instead of smooth steering. It’s annoying to a little unsettling, especially at higher speeds. I haven’t had it checked at the dealer but am an import auto mechanic of over 25 years.
Car has a faulty board control module. Car randomly starts itself in accessory mode, even when key fob is not present or batteries are removed. Other times, car will click and not turn on, or show random error messages. Car will intermittently not start; shows “keyless start system problem.” Car alarm randomly goes off. Car will intermittently not turn off once started. Internet search reveals multiple other individuals with the same problem, sometimes covered under warranty and other times not. Honda of America is sometimes helpful and other times, not. Problems are intermittent and difficult to reproduce, necessitating additional diagnostics by dealers. Among other problems reported are problems with door locks, windshield wipers, and headlights. I have concerns that the electrical problems will lead to serious safety issues, such as: lights turning on or off while driving; inability to turn off ignition in an emergency; wipers not working during rain (wet conditions seem to correlate to more problems, for other drivers and for me, suggesting an issue with corrosion), or getting locked into/out of the vehicle in an emergency.
While driving down the highway we heard a horrible grinding sound. We pulled over and looked under the car. The engine sheild was dragging. We took it to the dealer and it was replaced at a cost of $405.03. Today 339 days after the part was replaced and 16,000 miles after the replacement the same thing happened. This time the shield actually fell off in the middle of the road. So we are going to replace it again. I was curious about if this was a common problem and it is. Often it occurs after an oil change when the mechanic fails to secure the shield properly. And often at honda dealers. Seems fishy to me. What can we do about this? Am i going to have to replace the shield every year?
For several months, I was facing an issue with being able to lock and unlock my car properly. You could hear the mechanisms in the car trying to respond when I would press my key fob or the buttons inside the car but the locks themselves would not move. I would either need to use my physical car key to manually lock or unlock the door. Or if i was in the vehicle, i would manually unlock the driver door and then re-lock it. The problem seemed to start out of nowhere. The dealer confirmed the problem and said it was related to the door lock actuator. In two of the doors, the actuators had failed and in the other two they were on their way to failing. I had all four replaced which was a large and unexpected expense. But the ability to get in and out of the car safely and know that it is safely locked to prevent theft is very important. I did send a letter to Honda corporate about this problem and I felt this was a very strange part to stop working on a car that was brought brand new 6 year sago.
My vehicle electronic power steering system failed at 35,000. When driving, it becomes extremely difficult to turn the vehicle. I was told this issue is common among 2017 Honda vehicles, though there are recalls for only 2017-2018 Honda Civic and CR-V vehicles, this model Honda Civic.
Airbags deployed in an accident (minimal impact/superficial damage) & deeply lacerated my right thumb. No warning lamps or symptoms of the problem prior. Car to be inspected by insurance claim adjuster & available for inspection.
One of the piston rods broke and went through the block. Oil had heavy odor of gasoline
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the sunroof inadvertently exploded without impact. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that VIN was not included in a recall and that the dealer was unable to perform glass repairs. The vehicle had not yet been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
My husband hit a deer on the highway. The seatbelts locked up but the air bags did not physically engage. We took it into the repair shop today and they said that the airbag system DID in fact tell them to engage, but the air bags did not physically come out. The side by each seat belt opened up but the airbags did not come out, nor did the front air bags come out. If this would have been a worse accident, the occupants of the car would have been injured due to no airbags going off. An independent service center has confirmed that this is what happened. Insurance still has to go out an inspect the vehicle but it is planned to be done. There were no warning messages prior to the failure.
My 2017 Honda Civic Touring, has had two major issues in the past two months. So far, I have put about $3,000 in these issues. Issue 1:Two months ago, they found a leak in the front seal of the compressor, and it had to be replaced. There is no extended warranty on the compressor (only the condenser), though it seems to be a big issue for the Civic. This expense was approximately $2000. Issue 2:Long story short, a few weeks ago, my car alarm started going off about every four hours and had killed my battery by the next morning. During this time, my key fabs no longer worked and we had to jump the car to take it to the shop. The Body Control Module had gone out with no pervious warnings. Honda told my mechanic they’re on backorder and it will be nine months to a year before they could get a replacement. They located a used one and installed it. Though they were told it was a match, it was missing certain elements that my car had – back seat windows, auto lock when you exit your car, and front led blinkers. My front blinkers no longer work, and the previous Honda was probably bulbs. Needless to say, this can only be a temporary fix because it’s dangerous and won’t pass inspection. So far this expense has cost approximately $900. I’ve emailed Honda, and my issue has been ignored. They haven’t offered to help for either case. These things should not be happening to civics with this low mileage and age. So I now have a new BCM on backorder with a Honda dealer, and some time down the road, I will be paying for this expense again.
While driving a loud pop was heard. Smoke started coming out of the seatbelt retractor track. Seatbelt would then not retract. The local service shop said that a CO2 cartridge that locks the seatbelt had burst and there are substantial safety concerns with the vehicle now. Uploading the service quote below.
Keyless entry problem on my car. I was unable to get into my car and when I used the key from the fob to enter the car, the car wouldn't start. I was stranded and needed to call for help. The car was jumped and started again to get it back to my house. In the morning, the car wouldn't start again so was towed to a local mechanic in my town called Desert Dawg and they were able to start the car again and it drove for about a week and then the same problem happened. They put in a new battery and worked again for about a week. The car then would start but wouldn't shut off without disconnecting the battery. Then one night the car just started beeping uncontrollably and the car would not shut off the beeping and key fob not recognized. Towed back to Desert Dawg and said it was a keyless entry problem but the part he needed to fix it was on National Shortage and could take 7 months or more to get the part. He told me to take it to the Honda Dealership to see if they could help me. Car towed again to Honda dealership and they said it was a keyless entry problem and the part called a body control module with Part number: 38809-TBC-A31 was on back order and on National shortage and the part may not arrive for 7 months or longer or never. I now have no car to get to work. I called the Honda Corporation and got the same answer of this part being on national shortage. How can people be left stranded. I live in Arizona and the temperatures get very hot and people could die if their car doesn't start. Please address this issue. thanks.
Ac blowing hot out of driver side only. Repaired under extended warranty in 2020 due to faulty ac condenser that Honda now admits was a problem. Now that the car is out of extended warranty (by 4 months) the ac evaporator goes out and they want me to pay $2,000 to fix cause it wasn’t listed on the service bulletin. So ridiculous the entire system is faulty and There is no telling when it will go out again. Honda needs recall or extend the service bulletin to cover the entire system.. absolutely ridiculous!!!
My AC system stopped working and when checked it was a faulty AC condenser that was on recall. So the dealer fixed it for free then about 4 months later my air blows only hot again. Went back to get it checked and now they are saying the evaporator core needs to be replaced and charged me $2600 to fix. Seems fishy and I feel if one component is failing the whole system should be covered under an extended warranty.
Steering wheel feels like it sticks at center. When you try to make a minor adjustment, you need to use excess force to break the hold. That's causes the car to jerk into an over steer and you have to jerk it quickly back to correct. This can be very dangerous and put you in bad situations constantly.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated that while his son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The exhaust system, power steering, brake assist, power brake, hill assist, and traction control warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the turbo charger and engine needed to be replaced. The dealer requested the oil change records. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated that the driver's side headlight had water intrusion in the headlight housing. There was approximately 1 1/2 inch of water in the headlight housing. The contact was unable to see the roadway while driving at night. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the contact was informed that the Extended Warranty did not cover headlights. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 52,600.
Ac blowing hot air
At highway speeds and after longer periods of driving (>20-30 minutes) the steering becomes stuck in position until excess force is applied, leading to over-correction, and I believe this is a safety concern. This problem has been observed widely when searching online. The vehicle has not been inspected, is out of warranty, is available for inspection upon request, and no messages or other symptoms appeared. This problem first appeared in 2020 and persists when different tires and wheels are mounted.
When trying to keep the vehicle traveling straight, the steering seems to stick and then suddenly release once more force is applied to the steering wheel. This causes an over correction in steering and requires the driver to quickly correct in the opposite direction to avoid going in to the next lane.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel seized. Additionally, the parking brake warning light and the power steering assist warning light were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V663000 (Steering). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.
On February 5th I was taking my car out to the grocery store. All of a sudden my lights turned on and as soon as I'm going up the hill, going back home the car starts to shake uncrontrollably. I check my car under the hood toes what is going on, all of my wiring had been damaged, even the battery was damaged. I later bought the new wiring and and battery and had it replaced. After a few days at the mechanic I was able to get my car back but the mechanic said that due to the fact of the material that Honda is making their wiring which is the soy bean material, animal love to eat from that it has been something that he has seen for quite some time. Anyway I thought it might've been from the location of where I parked the night before when I had to go outside of town because I always park right in front of my house and its the first time. February 17th, I was pulling out of my parking spot and noticed that my car wasn't breaking as it should be so therefore I stopped the car and opened my door and immediately when I look under the hood I knew animals had gotten into from the pile of leaves and sticks on top of of everything and afterwards the car just turned off all by itself. I am now experiencing the exact same thing which puts my life at risk because the car just stops working mid ride and I could be on a whole highway and cause a collision. If they know that this is something that animals look for to eat I think that it is not safe to use for a car cause I could have been in danger for both these events if I were to be on the highway and my car just decided to stop functioning I could've been in a different circumstances,
I have noticed that the electronic power steering catches from time to time. This causes a safety hazard because more force is applied to get the steering back to normal when the steering catches. I have read that this is an issue with many Honda vehicles, but no recall has been made. I feel like this is a huge safety issue, and Honda should replace all electronic power steering that has this issue.
my power steering goes out all of a sudden and now I cannot steer my car.
Paint is completely flaking off down to the metal along the edges around the rear window on roof, driver quarter panel, and passenger quarter. It has been flaking for 2 years now. I bought the car in 2017 brand new.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated that the rear door locks were making squeaking sounds and the alarm would inadvertently be engaged at night. The contact stated that the vehicle would fail turn off and would go into ACC mode. The contact was unable to lock the doors. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the BCM had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V771000 (Electrical System, Back Over Prevention, Visibility/Wiper, Visibility, Exterior Lighting) because the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 39,500.
Fuel getting into oil
The Civic idles low after coming to a stop. Idles approximately 500 rpm’s. Periodically it will drop below 500 and stall. About 3 occurrences so far. Once at 500, there is no throttle response. The pedal can be fully depressed and the motor will continue to idle. Throttle response will occur anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds later. My work around is to take the car out of DRIVE and put it back. This solves problem. Mostly. I may have to do that a second time. Reverse is different. The car doesn’t move at all 100% of the time. And it takes me to move in and out of Reverse to get it to move. There are occasions that the throttle will activate. But, if you lift off the throttle…. It won’t engage. Below asks when this happens. It began over a year ago. I would depress the throttle and could count to 3 before going. Now it’s longer than 10. But, since I’ve learned about taking the car out of gear.

Bottom window molding on all 4 windows fails prematurely, seemingly happening on every 10th-Generation Honda.
Wiring harness was "damaged by rodents" twice due to the swap to soy-based, edible wiring. No other vehicles have this issue in my area and I have lived here 5 years. This damage causes all electrical systems to fail, including power steering, and will eventually result in a fatality - if it has not already. Honda will not cover this under warranty and has done nothing to resolve the issue! The alleged "spicy tape fix" does not deter rodents.
After a sever rainstorm and ice storm a code that causes BCM (Body Control Module) fault code to show up. It affected systems such as Intermittent lock or unlock trunk and door while vehicle is in operation, Failure to start and Security alarm active at random times. An independent service found the "B12D1" code that indicated the BCM has failed during the prescribed process by the manufacture. The problem was reproduced during an ice storm in 2019 and 2022 causing this error code while vehicle is exposed to weather.
SAFETY CONCERN > while driving on a local roadway, the right front tire went flat but the OEM TPMS ( this Civic model uses a indirect system ) never alerted ( due to traffic & road conditions was unable to pull off road ) & had to drive to nearest tire dealer, where a associate confirmed no TPMS warnings were displayed. after repair work completed, contacted a local Honda dealer service dept. , where a advisor stated there is no repair possible on Honda's indirect TPMS. he suggested installing a aftermarket direct TPMS ( tire pressure sensors are installed in each tire & a display unit fitted somewhere on dash ) at owner's cost. this is a safety concern.
Paint is peeling from section of roof between windscreen and sunroof. Case opened with Honda NA and New York State Attorney General's Office.

The paint is peeling from my Honda civic hatchback EXL. The color is sonic gray. The paint started to peel off slowly and hasn’t stopped. The side view mirror covers is where I noticed the peeling first. Then under the hood and door handles. Upon further inspection I noticed that rust had developed in the door jambs of the liftgate as well. Other areas that look like will start peeling are the fenders and hood. Dealer has inspected car but won’t address issue because this color hasn’t been recalled. Called Honda and they say the paint warranty has expired and this color hasn’t been recalled.
My steering wheel starts almost locking into a groove when driving. It will happen after 10 minutes or so of driving and it is most noticeable like when trying to stay straight in a lane, like when trying to make minor adjustments left or right, it feels like the steering wheel will stick, causing it to jerk more in the direction I'm trying to steer, which causes slight over steering and having to correct back the other direction. It's random and usually happens on drives longer than 5 minutes, but once it starts doing it, it stays that way till I'm done driving.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda Civic. The contact stated that after she started the vehicle, the gear shifter failed to shift into neutral. The contact stated that the parking brake warning light was illuminated; however, the parking brake was not engaged. The contact then stated that the steering wheel seized. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the parking brake needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and stated that the failure could be two separate switches related to the parking brake. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
My 2017 Honda civic has been having steering issues for a while. It’s very hard to keep straight on a highway and it feels like my steering is sticking when trying to correct myself in a lane on highway. No warning lights on the dash or anything like that. The problem started off minor and not noticeable but now it’s really bad to where I’m swerving left and right on the highway trying to keep straight but it’s almost impossible. It makes me feel unsafe and uncomfortable when driving. It almost feels like I’m going to get pulled over for looking like a drunk driver. I took the car to my local car Honda dealership and explained my problem to them and also told them my opinion saying it might be a steering rack issue since I see multiple problems that people post online with the same generation Civic. So they take my car in and run some test and say my car is all good and that they couldn’t replicate the problem. I think the most they did was align my car again which wasn’t really off. I take my car back and started driving for another week until I took the car back to Honda to see if they could take a look again because it just didn’t feel right. The second time I took it, same thing. Told me they couldn’t recreate the problem. I’m not sure if they checked the steering rack or not because I wasn’t told that they did and I’m assuming they didn’t because they would have to drop the whole front subframe. At that point I honestly didn’t know what to do. I tried taking it to a different shop (pep boys) to see if they could find anything and they couldn’t.
I purchased a 2017 Honda Civic LX from a local Honda. 10 minutes after leaving the dealership, the TPMS lights came on. Please note it was cold outside. Took the car to Autozone to have codes read. Code c0077-78 was detected. Once I got home, I checked the tire air pressure and the tire air pressure was low. I added air to tire afterward. I reset the TPMS and the TPMS light went away. The next day, the light came on for a few seconds after I started the car, but the light disappeared again. I didn't check the air pressure. I took it to Autozone to see if any codes were detected, but no codes were detected and all systems were functional.
Steering wheel locked up and could not steer. Vehicle hit a guard rail.
AC evaporator core failure. It appears Honda Civic has AC problems. This is the second time the AC has stopped working.
I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding the persistent issue of "sticky steering" in my Honda Civic, which is attributable to a malfunction in the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. Since the purchase of my Civc, I have experienced recurring difficulties with the steering, characterized by stiffness and unresponsiveness. This issue poses a significant safety concern as it affects the vehicle's handling and maneuverability, especially during tight turns or emergency situations. Upon investigation, it has been determined that the problem lies within the EPS system, likely due to faulty sensors, wiring issues, or malfunctioning components such as the EPS motor or control module.
check engine lights display periodically. The main one involves the fuel injectors. It has been an on going problem for 6-8 months. When I contacted the dealership I was told the part is not available Nationwide at this time and not sure when it will become available. While driving the car can go into "limp" mode where it doesn't let you go above 30 MPH. This problem first started approximately October 2022 after having the vehicle just over 7 months. When I contact the Dealership I was told there was nothing they could do but wait for the part to come in. Meanwhile I am paying for a vehicle that is not safe to drive , yet has no recalls on it. I was told by the Dealership that they have several vehicles at the auto auction that have the same issue that are not selling. I don't understand why Honda has not had a recall on this part. I am stuck with a vehicle ,my only means of transportation, still making payments, and it sits in the garage. Please let me know if there's anything else you need from me.
The steering tends to stick when driving at highway speeds. This issue makes small steering movements jerky and causes over corrections. The dealership stated they were not able to duplicate it. This is a known issue for this generation.

The NH-788P White Orchid Pearl Paint that was given an extended warranty due to a "paint peeling problem" on the Fit and HR-V models is now affecting Civics. I currently own a 2017 Civic Hatchback with the same paint, from the same country of manufacturing origin, within the same time frame, and was never given an extension warranty and currently am being denied help. The worst paint peeling, under the trunk, is actually protected from weather ... this is easily a defect that originated from Honda. Honda is denying any responsibility at the moment, refuses to help me via phone calls or email defaulting to the response of "Your car isn't under warranty." even though they have acknowledged issues and provided coverage for different models AND Canada covers my situation unlike the USA: [XXX] Had I know about this defect with my car with an official statement from Honda, it would have impacted my choices back in 2020 and 2021. I would of sold it around 2021 or contacted Honda earlier to settle these issues that would of happened under the extended warranty if I was given one. Honda's constant inaction once again damages consumers everywhere where the repair for paint is roughly 60% of the value of the car itself ...
