I WAS DRIVING NORMALLY, GOING 47MPH & ACCELERATING AS I WAS ABOUT TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC ON HIGH WAY, WHEN MY CARS ENGINE SUDDENLY DIED. I DIDENT EVEN NOTICE AT FIRST BECAUSE IT HAPPENED SUDDENLY AND QUIETLY. I ONLY NOTICED BECAUSE THE STEERING LOCKED UP AND I FOUND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE WHEEL. I WAS ABLE TO PUT ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AND STOP THE CAR ON THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY. CAR WOULD NOT RUN SINCE THIS HAPPENED. CAR WILL START BUT DIE ON IDEL. HAVE REPLACED STARTER, MAIN RELAY, IGNITION, SPARK PLUGS AND HAVE HAD 4 AUTO SHOPS LOOK AT IT AND STILL NO ONE CAN FIGURE OUT THE ISSUE..

THE AIRBAGS IN THE 1998 HONDA CRV'S HAVE BEEN FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE WITH NO REMEDY, WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE IN A VEHICLE OVER 20 YEARS OLD. THIS VEHICLE IS USED TO TRANSPORT MY FAMILY AND IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT HONDA CAN ALLOW SUCH A FATAL PROBLEM TO GO UNSOLVED FOR SO MANY YEARS. THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR ANY INJURIES SUSTAINED DUE TO THESE DYSFUNCTIONAL AIRBAGS UNTIL THEY ARE ABLE TO REPLACE SAID AIRBAGS WITHOUT CHARGE.

THIS AIRBAG HAS BEEN RECALLED 3/20 AND AS OF 8/20 ARE STILL NOT PROVIDING THE PARTS FOR REPAIR, THEY HAVE BEEN PROMISING FREE REPAIR FOR 5 MONTHS NOW, AND WE HAVE BEEN PAYING INSURANCE ON THE CAR BUT ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE IT.

WHILE DRIVING WITH RADIO ON THE ENGINE CUTS OUT AFTER SITTING FOR A COUPLE MINUTES IT WILL START BACK UP HOWEVER IT STALLS AGAIN IF RADIO IS ON. THIS PROBLEM ONLY OCCURS WHEN I HAVE RADIO ON IF I LEAVE THE RADIO OFF IT WORKS OK

A DEALER MENTIONED THAT THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL RECALL REPAIR PERFORMED TO REPLACE THE STARTER BEFORE THE CONTACT OWNED THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER (AVALON HONDA, 100 AVALON BLVD, CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NJ 08210, (877) 515-6611) STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NEED TO BE FURTHER INSPECTED AND DIAGNOSED TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.

THE TRANSMISSION GOES INTO NEUTRAL BY ITSELF AND NO GEARS WORK AT ALL UNTIL YOU TURN IT OFF AND RESTART IT THEN IT WILL MOVE A SHORT DISTANCE AND DO IT AGAIN IT HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY AND I ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 02V120000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 172,000.
WHEN VEHICLE IS RUNNING, AND IN MOTION, THE ENGINE WILL SUDDENLY STOP. ONCE STOPPED, I CAN START IT RIGHT BACK UP. TOUCHING THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION SWITCH MAY CAUSE THE SAME BEHAVIOR.

I CONTACTED LOCAL HONDA DEALER AND THEY SAID NO RECALL.
I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 1998 HONDA CR-V. I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED BY HONDA THAT THERE IS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON MY VEHICLE DUE TO A FAULTY DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR IN THE DRIVER'S DOOR. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY I WAS NOT CONTACTED REGARDING THE RECALL. I JUST HAPPENED TO SEE THAT THERE IS ONE THAT EXPIRES ON NOVEMBER 1, 2015. I AM ASKING THAT I BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE MY VEHICLE IN FOR THE REPAIR FREE OF CHARGE BECAUSE THE MANUFACTURERS FAILED TO NOTIFY ME.

I AM FILING A FORMAL COMPLAIN DUE TO I HAVE BROUGHT MY CAR ONTO THE DEALERSHIP AUG 7, 2014 DUE TO MY CAR WILL STALL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I JUST REPLACE THE BATTERY 07/26/2013 I HAVE BROUGHT MY CAR ONTO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ARE CLAIMING THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. THEY KEEP IT OVERNIGHT AND WHEN I PICKED IT UP AFTER 5 DAYS IT WILL STALL AGAIN, I AM TRYING TO CALL THE SERVICE MANAGER IN DIAMOND HONDA GLENDALE AND THEY SAID MANAGER IS ON VACATION. I CALLED CORPORATE OVER HONDA IN TORRANCE CA. ACCORDING TO THE CASE MANAGER WHO WILL HANDLING MY CASE THEY WILL DO FURTHER INVESTIGATION. IN MY EXPERIENCE I HAVE NEVER BEEN NEGLECTED BY THE DEALERSHIP. THEY CHECK ON THE SYSTEM THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. BUT I KEEP TELLING THEM TO CHECK IT CAREFULLY WHAT IF SOMETHING I GOT INVOLVE IN AN ACCIDENT. WOULD I JUST BE A PART OF NHTSA STATISTICS WHEN FATALITY RESULTS. MY CAR HAS A PROBLEM AND MY IMPRESSION I HAVE THE CAR MAYBE IT IS THE CAR ITSELF. IT WILL NOT SHOW YET IN THE SYSTEM, BECAUSE I AM NOT YET FILLING A FORMAL COMPLAIN. PLEASE INCLUDE, IN ALL CURRENT AND FUTURE PLANNING EFFORTS, MEASURES FOR BETTER DATA COLLECTING & REPORTING OF ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES, AS WELL AS A ROBUST, MANDATORY EDUCATION PLAN FOR MOTORISTS AND CYCLISTS, AND PLANS FOR IMPROVED INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT BIKE RIDING AND CYCLE COMMUTING NATIONWIDE. THIS LETTER IS A FOLLOW-UP TO HONDA REGARDING A LETTER I HAD SUBMITTED ON FEBRUARY 26, 2014. JUNE 10, 2014 I WAS CONTACTED BY A HONDA CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE REGARDING THE LETTER OUTLINED BELOW AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FROM HONDA DESPITE SAFETY CONCERNS. I WAS ALSO TOLD BY THE LOCAL HONDA DEALERSHIP THAT THERE HAVE BEEN ISSUES WITH IGNITION/IGNITERS WITH HONDA CRVS (ESPECIALLY THE 98 CRV WHICH INCLUDED A RECALL IN 2002 FOR THIS VERY ISSUE) AND THAT I CAN GO AHEAD AND REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $200 PLUS LABOR (FOR A KNOWN DEFECT). I HAD THIS WORK DONE APPROXIMATELY A YEAR AND A HALF AGO AND THE ISSUE CONTINUES AS THE VEHICLE WILL SHUT DOWN WHILE DRIVING AND WILL RESTART AFTER SITS. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS A VEHICLE THAT NOT ONLY DO I DRIVE ON OPEN HIGHWAYS BUT MY DAUGHTER DRIVES AS WELL. IN LIGHT OF THE RECENT EVENTS WITH A SIMILAR ISSUE WITH GM VEHICLES, I WOULD ASK THAT MY SITUATION BE GIVEN ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATION. *TR

WHILE PARKED, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD BANG AND NOTICED THAT THE SPARE TIRE ON THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE HAD BLOWN OUT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SPARE TIRE HAD NEVER BEEN USED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED SO THEY COULD NOT ASSIST. THE TIRE WAS NOT REPLACED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE WAS 115,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE OF THE TIRE WAS 0.
NIGHT TIME DRIVING HAZARD THIS IS A DEFINITE ELECTRICAL SAFETY PROBLEM: I EXPERIENCE A COMPLETE LOSS OF LIGHTS WHEN I SWITCH TO HIGH BEAM: >(1) MY HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF >(2) THE HI-BEAM NEVER TURNS ON A COMPLETE BLACK-OUT I WAS ON A SHARP CURVE IN MY FIRST INCIDENT WHEN I FLICKED TO HI-BEAM. MY WIFE CALLED AROUND 8:15PM ON WEDNESDAY 12-01-2010. SHE TOLD ME HER CAR JUST STOPPED ON THE ROAD. SHE GAVE ME INFO OF HER WHEREABOUTS. I WAS ONLY ABOUT 5 MINUTES AWAY THANK GOODNESS. AS I APPROACHED HER VEHICLE I SAW IN MY HORRIFIED STATE HER CAR STALLED 30 TO 40 FEET FROM THE NEAREST STOP LIGHT ON THE FAR LEFT LANE. SHE WAS ABLE TO STAY ON AN ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUSY STREET WITH MY 5 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER!. I PARKED MY CAR TO THEIR RIGHT AND RAN ACROSS THE STREET WHEN IT WAS CLEARED. MY BROTHER WAS BEHIND HER WITH HIS CAR WITH EMERG. LAMPS ON. MY WIFE ALSO HAD HER EMERG. LAMPS ON AND I TRIED STARTING THE CAR. YOU COULD HEAR IT START UP BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT KICK ON. WITH THE HELP OF MY BROTHER IN LAW I FINALLY PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL THROUGH THAT BYPASS SWITCH AND WE PUSHED IT TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LANE TO THE RIGHT WHERE WE COULD BE OUT OF HARMS WAY OF THE VIOLENT ON COMING TRAFFIC. I HAD A CLOSE CALL ON THE LAST LANE ON THE RIGHT WHEN A ON COMING CAR NEARLY HIT THE CAR AND MY BROTHER IN LAW WHO WAS PUSHING IN THE BACK. I CALLED A MECHANIC I KNEW A HE SHOWED UP ABOUT 10-15 MINUTES. HE ASKED FOR WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED AND MY WIFE TOLD HIM THE CAR JUST STOPPED AND STALLED OUT OF NO WHERE. AFTER A FEW ATTEMPTS, ENGINE WOULD START, BUT JUST CAUGHT OFF. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO LOCAL MECHANIC WHO FIRST ASSUMED IT WAS A BAD DISTRIBUTOR. AFTER REVIEWING POSSIBLE CAUSES ON INTERNET, OUR MECHANIC FOUND COMPLAINTS ABOUT FAULTY IGNITION SWITCHES. FORTUNATELY THIS WAS THE PROBLEM AND COULD BE REPLACED. HONDA DEALER SAID THEY HAD REPLACED 4 OF THESE SWITCHES IN THE LAST 4 WEEKS. PRIOR TO THIS CAR RAN FINE, EXCEPT ONE MORNING MY WIFE DISCOVERED WHEN SHE TURNED THE KEY IN THE IGNITION, THE DASH LIGHTS FLICKERED AND THERE WAS A SERIES OF RAPID CLICKS BEFORE ENGINE STARTED. THIS WAS SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. MECHANIC HAS REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE SWITCH AND CAR STARTS AND RUNS FINE. HONDA SHOULD WARN OWNERS OF OLDER MODEL CRV'S THAT THIS SWITCH SHOULD BE REPLACED AFTER 100K MILES. WE WERE LUCKY CAR WAS NOT MOVING IN TRAFFIC WHEN THIS HAPPENED, AS YOU HAVE LITTLE CONTROL WHEN ENGINE SHUTS OFF AND STEERING IS DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING FURTHER INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATELY FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WERE 135,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

HONDA 98 CRV AND 97 CIVIC BOTH HAVE HAD THE PAD (THAT IS WHAT IS CALLED, $4 PART) BREAK AND THIS CAUSES THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO STAY ON WHILE DRIVING. DRIVER HAS NO WARNING AND DRIVING WITH THE BRAKE LIGHTS ON CAUSES THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE DRIVER TO SLAM THEIR BRAKES ON AT HIGHER SPEEDS WHICH CAN CAUSE A ACCIDENT. A WORKER AT THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THEY ARE SEEING A LOT OF CARS THIS AGE HAVE THIS BREAKAGE AND IT DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE TO DO WITH USAGE (BOTH CARS HAVE LESS THEN 50,000 MILES ON THEM). THE LATCH ON THE GATE THAT LOCKS THE GLASS BACK WINDOW INTO PLACE IS COVERED IN A WHITE PLASTIC THAT FALLS APART FROM SUN EXPOSURE. THIS CAUSES THE METAL PART MOUNTED IN THE GLASS WINDOW THAT YOU PUSH INTO THE LATCH ON THE GATE TO RATTLE . THE GLASS WINDOW CLOSES BUT THE WHOLE GLASS IS LOSE, NOT TIGHT. ON THE INTERSTATE THIS STARTS THE GLASS TO RATTLE AND I AM AFRAID OF WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I HAVE TO SLAM MY BRAKES ON AT HIGHER SPEEDS SINCE THE GLASS IS NOT SECURE. SEVERAL YEARS AGO ON MYCARSTATE.COM I FOUND INFORMATION THAT WAS HELPFUL WITH MY 1998 HONDA CR-V. BUT I HAVEN'T SPECIFICALLY SEEN INFORMATION ABOUT THIS "NEXT" ISSUE. FOR THE PAST YEAR OR SO, ON OCCASION, I CAN'T GET MY CAR KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE CAR WILL NOT TURN ALL THE WAY OFF. I CAN'T GET THE KEY TO TURN ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT. MECHANICS HAD DIFFICULTY IN DIAGNOSING THE TROUBLE BECAUSE OF THE IRREGULARITY OF THE QUIXOTIC EVENTS. DURING THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 8, 2008, THE STALLING OF THE VEHICLE BECAME MORE PERSISTENT, PROMPTING MY DAUGHTER TO RETURN THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL GARAGE ONCE AGAIN. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH OF THE MATTER, THE MECHANICS INFORMED HER THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE CR-V'S KEY LOCK IGNITION SWITCH, AND THAT THE PARTICULAR ITEM FIT THE PARAMTERS OF A HONDA RECALL ITEM. I CONTACTED A HONDA SERVICE CENTER AND WAS TOLD THAT AS LONG AS THE SRS LIGHT WAS ON, THE AIR BAG SYSTEM WAS OFF AND THAT IT WOULD COST ABOUT $90 TO HAVE IT TURNED OFF. I ALSO WAS TOLD TO DRIVE IT FOR A WEEK (WITHOUT PROTECTION FROM THE SRS AND PERHAPS THE COMPUTER WOULD RECYCLE AND TURN THE SRS BACK ON. THE DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDED NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON HIGHWAYS OR OFF THE ROAD. THE INDEPENDENT CERTIFIED MECHANIC WAS GOING TO PROVIDE AN ESTIMATE BUT THE SERVICE MANAGER DISCOURAGED THE CONTACT BECAUSE THE REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE COVERED BY THE DEALERSHIP.

TREAD SEPARATED, HITTING AND DAMAGING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR. WILL REPLACE WITH TIRES FROM DIFFERENT COMPANY, AND TRY TO CLAIM DAMAGES FROM BRIDGESTONE/FIRESTONE. *NM
THIS SPRING, WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE MY 1998 HONDA CR-V SUDDENLY STALLED. NO WARNING AT ALL. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SHOULDER. TURN THE IGNITION OFF, WAIT A WHILE AND RESTART THE CAR WITHOUT ANOTHER PROBLEM. A WEEK OR SO LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED ON LOCAL ROADS ONCE ONE DAY AND TWICE ANOTHER DAY. EACH TIME, I WAS BLESSED TO BE ABLE TO GET TO THE CENTER TURN LANE OR OFF ONTO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT GETTING REAR ENDED. IT HAPPENED SEVERAL MORE TIMES BEFORE WE COULD FIGURE THIS OUT. MY MECHANIC CHECKED OUT THE CAR AND COULD FIND NOTHING "WRONG". HE LOOKED ON THIS SITE NHTSA AND FOUND THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL. I TOOK IT TO A CURRY HONDA IN CHAMBLEE, GA AND THEY FIXED IT AND THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY HARNESS RECALL ALSO. I'VE REFERRED A FEW FOLKS BACK TO THIS SITE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. LOVED MY HONDA CR-V , BUT ON MARCH 20, 2006, I HIT A SLICK SPOT WHILE IT WAS SNOWING. I PROCEEDED TO LOSE CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE, GOING INTO THE DITCH FRONT FIRST. HAD A FRONT IMPACT, THEN BEGAN TO FLIP 2-3 TIMES ONCE END TO END AND SKIDDING 30+ FEET. MY SEAT BELT HELD, BUT MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, I COULD HAVE DIED, AND IF THERE HAD BEEN A PASSENGER, THEY WOULD HAVE, THE WHOLE PASSENGER SIDE WAS CAVED IN. THIS WAS HOW EVER THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAD EVER EXPERIENCED WITH THIS CAR. CAR IS A VERY RELIABLE CAR. *NM
DT: CONSUMER OWNS A 1998 HONDA CRV. SHE SAID THE VEHICLE JUST SHUT OFF. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS. WHEN IT SHUT DOWN VEHICLE WAS IN TRAFFIC A COUPLE DIFFERENT TIMES, AND THIS ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN ON AUGUST 15, 2005 WHILE SHE WAS IN TRAFFIC ON HILTON AVENUE IN BALTIMORE MARYLAND. SHE WAS ALMOST STRUCK IN THE REAR, SHE DID NOT PANIC, PUT ON EMERGENCY FLASHERS, NOTIFYING THE TRAFFIC SHE WAS HAVING PROBLEMS. THE CONTACT WAS NOT HIT, BUT IT DID SCARE HER. WHEN THIS HAPPENED THE VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN, AND IT APPEARED TO SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING ELECTRICAL. THE FLASHERS WERE THE ONLY THING SHE WORKING. SHE PLACED THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND PUT FOOT ON THE BRAKES THEN HAD TO TRY TWICE BEFORE VEHICLE WOULD START. WHEN VEHICLE WAS ON LEVEL GROUND OR FACING UP HILL IT USUALLY WOULD NOT START AS QUICKLY. HAD TO PAT THE GAS A FEW TIMES AND TRIED TO START VEHICLE A COUPLE TIMES BEFORE IT WILL START. WHEN VEHICLE WAS ON A HILL IT SEEMED TO START BACK MUCH EASIER, IF VEHICLE WAS FACING DOWN HILL SHE DOES NOT HAVE TO PUMP GAS OR TRY AS MANY TIMES TO START VEHICLE. SHE WAS AWARE OF A RECALL 02V120000 ON SAME MAKE/MODEL AND YEAR CONCERNING ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IGNITION SWITCH. SHE HAS NOT YET CHECKED WITH HONDA TO SEE IF THIS VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL. SHE BECAME AWARE OF THIS RECALL WHEN SHE TOOK VEHICLE TO A GARAGE AND HAD A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK . THE CHECK WOULD NOT REGISTER ANY CODES, THE VEHICLE DID SHUT DOWN ON THE MECHANIC, BUT NO CODES CAME UP. *AK
