NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Honda CR-V. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I was driving down the street. The speed limit of the street is 55mph. I was driving between 45 and 55mph. The car suddenly broke. There were no cars or other objects in front of me that the car should have been braking for.
The automatic braking system slams on the breaks randomly in the middle of the road if an object out of the ordinary is detected. It has happened 3 times and could have risked my safety/life. Today 9/10/22, there was a metal plate in the road to cover a pothole in Memphis TN. I was on Perkins in a very high traffic area and my brakes were applied that brought the car to a literal screeching halt. The last 2 times it happened it was when there were orange road barrels on the side of the road.
Automatic emergency braking activates when there is nothing in the path of the vehicle, no obstructions, no weather issues.
While driving on the freeway at 65 mph, the car's brakes suddenly went on causing the car to swerve and almost be hit by another car. This is the 3rd time that this has happened in the last year.
while shifting into park shifter release button came out.Plastic broke on shifter release button.Had to temporarily reinstall button each time want to shift.I see there are a lot of complaints of same problem.Have worked for 32 years as an aircraft mechanic and know a part not designed correctly.
In September of 2022 all the warning lights went off and the associated systems shut down. Took vehicle to dealer and had codes checked. Code thrown was P0172 - system too rich. Though vehicle was under extended warranty at the time of this incident none of the potential TSB’s for this known issue were investigated. Was advised that it was potentially bad gas and to run it low, return to dealer and have lights reset, refill with better fuel and see if the code trips again. Now in January of 2024, after my extended warranty has expired, the same code has been thrown again, and I’ve been advised to try the same thing, though this adviser does not believe the gas is the issue. He speculates that the fuel injectors are the likely culprit. Once again, a very known issue to Honda, which costs about $1500 to $2000 to repair. As this is a known issue, Honda should be correcting it free of charge to the owners of these vehicles.
Sometimes the braking system will flash even when I am not close to any cars in front of me. I have read reports that the automatic emergency brake system has fully engaged in other cars while driving on the highway and while mine has not fully engaged, it has flashed a warning sign which worries me that one day it will engage fully while I am driving!
I was driving down the same stretch of road and time of day as the previous complaint I submitted. There were no cars (or anything else) in front or behind me. The road was clear. The “brake” symbol on the dash flashed on the instrument cluster. There was no beep or brakes applied.
I was driving on a residential road where repairs are being done to the road. There were two metal plates in the road covering the hole where workers have been doing ongoing work. As I approached the plates doing perhaps 25mph the warning system to brake sounded and automatic braking system engaged and brought us to a near stop before disengaging. No one was behind us but if someone was we certainly would have been rear-ended.
The vehicle performed emergency braking suddenly. I was on a straight stretch of road with no vehicles in front or behind me. There was nothing in the road in front of me. It was clear. The vehicle beeped, the "brake" flashed on the instrument cluster and then the vehicle applied the brakes on its own. The episode lasted 1 to 2 seconds. Luckily no one was behind me. The problem has not been reproduced or inspected by the manufacturer or other party.
I was traveling over the weekend (700 miles). I stopped at a convenience store, went to shift in to Park, and there was no button left in the shift lever. I was able to shift to Neutral so I did not drive through the front door. Had this happened while in a roadway, it could have lead to a far worse outcome. I was able to figure out how the inner parts of the level are aligned to shift gears and finish my trip, with several interruptions as more and more pieces fell out and changed my ability to get the shifter to work in a new way. I have found ample videos on the repair process as this appears to be a very common issue. This affects the functioning of the transmission and is very dangerous. I cannot find any open recalls for my VIN. If this has been replaced before, the replacement is also defective.
When driving short and longer distances, typically at speeds consistently over 35mph the steering wheel seems to "lock" in place or feels "stuck". There is also an associated creaking sound. The locking up/stuck is pretty easily resolved, SO FAR. This behavior started this summer and happened practically all summer any time I drove anywhere. (The fields below don't allow me to enter multiple dates/ranges.) My kids are almost 17 now and I cannot help them work on driving miles to get their licenses because I feel my car is unsafe to drive. This identical behavior has been pretty well documented in several years of the Honda CRVs on a Honda forum (https://www.carproblemzoo.com/honda/cr-v/steering-problems.php). The mentioned forum has examples where much more extreme results occur where steering locks up while turning and cars become undrivable. Reports are that Honda has been unwilling/unresponsive to address/resolve. I've had my Honda dealer service team trying for over a week now to get Honda to either cover the steering replacement or authorize covering it via my extended warranty. This shouldn't take so long to approve and I believe Honda should cover it. My car is unsafe to drive and this warrants further action. Honda is not acting in the best interest of the public and is complicit and responsible for any injuries or death resulting from this issue. I hope The NHTSA is able to do something to light a fire under Honda to get some attention on this issue, on behalf of all Honda drivers.
The check engine light on my 2017 Honda CRV came on August 2022 and all safety features of my vehicle stopped working. I immediately took the car to my local Honda dealership. They claim the issue is due to faulty fuel injectors but refused to cover the cost to fix them under warranty even though it’s a known issue with this car and a couple of other Honda cars that use the same system. I’m really concerned as the injector issue disables KEY safety features when it occurs. An injector issue should NOT cause safety features to stop working (ex. Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, TPS, Hill Start Assist, Braking, etc...). Honda should be held responsible for putting their customers lives at risk with faulty systems and lack of accountability or solutions.
Unknown. Intermittent multiple warning lights on dashboard flashing without incident resulting in all safety features being disabled. Occasional unnecessary extended automatic braking incidents putting occupants at risk of collision from rear vehicle.
At about 9:15 a.m. today I was lightly braking as I approached an intersection where I needed to turn right. There were no vehicles in front of me. The weather was clear and dry, about 70 degrees. As I slowed, the AEB system flashed BRAKE several times, and then the car came to a sudden and complete stop. The same thing happened to this car at the same spot several months ago under the same circumstances — no other traffic ahead and good weather. There is a metal plate on the road ahead of where these incidents took place. The plate has been there for years and we drive over it all the time with no problem. But when no cars are ahead, could the AEB system be mistaking the plate for an obstacle?
For some time now nearly 4 years of owning this vehicle, I have seen all of my light indicators just turn on without any reason. The only way to turn them all off is by taking of the red cable from the battery and putting it back on....
I was driving on a rural/suburban road at approximately 40 mph when my Honda CR-V threw on the brakes and slammed to a complete stop on its own. There were no vehicles in front of me or coming toward me. Fortunately, there were no cars behind me. There was no warning, it just happened. My car has Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) technology on it that causes the car to brake I get close to a car in front of me. I believe it was this system that malfunctioned. My 4-year-old son was in the car with me, and both of our lives would have been in danger if there had been a vehicle behind us. I took it into the Honda dealership and do not plan on driving it again until this issue is resolved.
Body control module failure. 800K recalls for models excluding the CR-V. Part unavailable. Causes flashes lights and battery drain.
The shifter knob fell out of the shifter while in drive (operation) causing the vehicle to not be able to be shifted into neutral/park when stopped. The issue is a known issue as reporting in TSB 19-063 but the VIN of my vehicle is not included in the TSB.
All 8 systems associated with collision avoidance, lane change warning, tire pressure, cruise control, braking system, and engine electrics are flashing warning lights about 80% of the time. The car runs but these systems are compromised (cruise won't work, emergency braking doesn't work, etc.) The dealer has told me different things each time he has diagnosed it, the latest being a need for new turbo units, but the number of people who have this problem and get different "solutions" from dealers only to have the problem return indicates a systemic problem.
Beginning 8/22 and currently happening, my 2017 CR-V 1.5L Turbo with 48K miles (and all routine services done at Honda dealership/service centers since buying it brand new) does not engage when going from Reverse to Drive; in 1st gear the RPMS increase up to 3K or so before shifting into 2nd gear. When stopped at a traffic light or stop sign, and the car is idling, when starting up again the car hesitates and shutters before engaging. When on the highway and slow down for traffic or switching lanes, the vehicle hesitates even when pushing the gas pedal consistently or down all the way. I have had the vehicle into three different Honda dealerships/service centers and they can replicate the issue but no resolution as there are no service codes identified during diagnostics and none appear on the dash. First Honda advisor came up with no recommendations; 2nd advisor flushed and replaced transmission fluid; and 3rd advisor suggested testing and replacing turbo at cost of $3500+ and no guarantee it would solve the problem. I am distressed that the issue cannot be identified by Honda and fixed. I fear for my personal safety and that of my passengers as the CR-V is less reliable and I only drive short distances when need be. Taking it on a road-trip or long distance is out of the question. It’s a matter of time before I’m left stranded or in an accident due to lack of throttle response.
The shift button broke off and became unusable. Driver was able to temporarily reattach the button, but the button’s plastic broke, making it impossible to reattach.
The push button on the shifter broke and fell out. The plastic piece is broken but luckily if we hold it in, it still shifts for now.
The contact owns a 2017 Honda CR-V. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, several unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that while attempting to turn off the vehicle, a message to depress the START/STOP button twice instead of once was displayed. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was 22,000.
All indicator lights on dashboard are light up. These lights are on even though there is nothing wrong with the car. I’m not able to use my emergency parking brake or parking hold. All the safety features like lane keeping assist and cruise control is not available. Replaced battery hoping it would work and no change. I plugged the car into the tester and nothing comes up. Now I can’t pass emissions due to all the lights and can’t re register my car because of it.
Shifter button fell off. I was looking for recall information when I found this for. Nothing else has been done. I was parked at the time.
Emergency braking engaged unexpectedly, electronic module failure ,all warning lights flashed on the information system , vehicle would not turn off, headlights flashing, windshield wipers engaged without input from driver. Transmission would not engage. This would be very dangerous if had occurred on highway , it occurred in a rural area with very little traffic.
While parked and off, car alarm (horn) starts going off and lights are flashing. Even though car is not running, instrument panel is lit up, ac fan on, and dash displaying every possible error. Car would not start. Only way to get alarms to stop was disconnecting battery, Towed to dealer who said it needed a Body Control Module (BCM) and there is no firm delivery date. They were able to reset errors and said it was SAFE to drive. After returning home, after stopping car, same thing started. Ended up disconnecting battery whenever car was parked. After about a week, it got to point where engine WOULD NOT SHUT OFF, even pulling battery cable. The only way to get it to shut off was to pull the fuel injector fuse. After a few times of this, it got in a lockout mode where would not recognize key fob. Towed to dealer and there it sits, a 5 year old car awaiting a BCM which I HOPE fixes the problem but I am NOT convinced. Interesting that Honda can find BCM's for NEW cars but not for current customers... The above is a summary of the issue. The full details can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pyf9xcBQCbp-bzV9n0fo5_ibQ4FkATxhdm9nDK4vjG8/edit?usp=sharing
Parasitic battery draw. I’m being told this is what is causing my repeated issues, I’ve had the car for 3 years and have replaced the battery 4 times. All warning lights keep cycling despite consistently having it looked at for diagnosing. Today the car would barely move- it powered on just fine, but despite depressing the gas pedal- it would barely move more than 5 miles per hour causing severe risk in the road
All light indicators are turning on, making my dash look like a Christmas tree. Happens atleast 3 times a month
I cranked my vehicle as usual, and all of the safety feature warnings began to cycle through on the dash and ding as it changed from one alert to another. I turned the car off and restarted it, but the issue continued. I drove to the store and the warnings continued to cycle through without the dinging sound. When I arrived back home, I looked online for similar issues and found that other owners of the same vehicle had experienced the same issues. There were some owners that noted that they had been told that Honda was aware of the issue and did not currently have a fix. At the advice of one of the posters, I disconnected my battery and reconnected. It didn’t work right away, but the alerts did go away after being cranked a couple more times. The car seems to drive fine when the alerts appear, but it’s very concerning as I do not know why it keep happening and what it means about the safety features of my vehicle.
I was driving on I-94 in Chicago on 6-22-2022 at approximately 50mph. There was no one in front or beside me and the AEB system braked on its own and the "BRAKE" alert on the dash flashed momentarily. The car slowed down about 10-20 mph and I brought it back up to speed. This is the only time it has happened and it was terrifying.
I parked my car in the garage. I can't start it. The light of break system is on.
Yesterday as I was driving my Honda CRV at about 55 mph on a rural road, it suddenly stopped. There was NOTHING around, no other cars, animals, NOTHING! It took my speed down to about 10 mph in seconds, threw my groceries on the floor HARD. I called two different Honda dealerships and the both told me they hadn't heard any reports of this happening, yet I did a search and found that it IS an issue! The one dealership wants me to bring my car in for inspection to the tune of $139. The problem is, I no longer feel safe driving this car! Fortunately I was on a rural road and not the highway! There have been NO warning message or other symptoms prior to this. The forward collision is the issue. This car is available for inspection. On Saturday June 18, 2022 at 9:56 a m I was pulling my 2017 HONDA CRV into a parking space at my local Food Lion in Madison, NC. As soon as I took my foot off the gas pedal and slowly pressed the brakes, the engine immediately revved up, accelerated highly and lurched forward not stopping until I hit an unoccupied vehicle head on in front of me. At the same time side swiping an unoccupied vehicle to the left of me. Thankfully no one was injured. Total of {3} vehicles involved causing several thousands dollars of damage. Was inspected by the police and there were no warning signs; it just happened immediately. When researching on line about problems of HONDA CRV"s this issue was listed numerous times: UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. Something needs to be done about this problem before people are killed!
The car cabin smells like gasoline due to faulty fuel injectors. I tried getting Honda to fix it and they claimed it was a software issue. After the software update the very next day the car showed 6 different warnings. The warnings would come on intermittently but now they are always showing. When the warning lights weren’t on the car would stop abruptly due to the front end collision system. I tried to get them to fix the warning lights and they wanted me to shell out close to 2,000 dollars to replace a part that’s only about 200 dollars retail.
air conditioning temperature does not work. no matter what degree, the hot air stays the same, including the lowest degree on the air conditioner register "low". There are no warning lights displayed and there are no leaks detected. I am seeing many other complaints like this and mentions of recalls, but I cannot find a recall notification anywhere. I have less than 26,000 miles on my 2017 car.
shifter knob button broke off! unable to control car when this important gadget is broken! can not control the gears now. can not move to P or D or R, etc. no warning at all. just fell off yesterday. luckily this happened while it was parked in a parking lot.
I started my car and shifted into reverse. The silver part of the gear shift popped of and fell into the foot well. I was able to pick it up and hold it in place and shift the car but it is clearly not safe.
Fuel injector for Cylinder 3 failed. This has been a 6 month issue starting with simple cold start issue misfire with cylinder 3 (didn't know this was the issue then). I mentioned this issue at my last oil change (about 3-4 months ago) due to it getting worse, and was told there was nothing wrong with my car. A couple months later, I noticed my AC had quit blowing. Fast-forward to 1 week ago, I got on the interstate and tried to go around someone when my car went into full idle mode because of the misfire with cars speeding behind me and a car to the right of me and could not get over for safety. This almost caused a crash on the interstate due to the misfire issue. I took my car into the dealer today (December 5th, 2022), and was told it was a misfire with cylinder 3 (code P0304), and it was the fuel injectors. I did have them fix the issue since I need the vehicle. Honda Recalls specifically state that there is a misfire issue with P0304, but says it does not include my VIN. I believe this is an error on their behalf since half of the issues described in the recall notice describes the issues of what was happening with my vehicle.
Road mitigation system randomly flashing “brakes” despite no traffic in front of car, clear roadway, no rain/weather issue. Multiple times
The gear shift popped off making us unable to put the car in drive whenever it was in park. The gear shift also came off as well.
The automatic brake system comes on and brakes with nothing in front of the vehicle while the vehicle is moving at variable rates of speed. Sometimes 25 mph on a country road, sometimes 65 on an interstate. This is putting myself at risk and others for a rear end collision for sudden stops for no reason. I did take it to a dealer who did diagnostics and said there was nothing wrong because the last 5 times there was something in front of me per the computer. I can just confirm this has happened many times w nothing in front of me. They also charged me diagnostics for this and when I contacted Honda they just said my vehicle was not one of the ones affected and was not under warranty any longer or recall. The only light that happens is the brake assist light that states “.brake” and then suddenly beeps at you comes on and the car starts to brake.
I was driving down the highway and all ADAS lights came on and kept repeating. I reset the system but the warnings remained. I took the vehicle to local mechanic who plugged in his scanner. The first thing that popped up was wheel speed sensor along with all the other ADAS warnings. Did alot of research on the internet and found out this was a common problem with the CRV. I decided to buy a new sensor and replace myself. This actually solved the problem. Why do all ADAS lights come on for one problem?
Was driving on open road, and the automatic braking system engaged randomly for no reason. Jerked me forward in my seat when absolutely nothing was on the road.
The gear shift button popped off while the car was in drive. The plastic broke, making it impossible to reattach. In order to switch the gear, I had to reach into the gear shift with my finger to manually press down where the button was. It would have been impossible to quickly shift my gear if I had needed.
I was parked at a local pharmacy. I put the vehicle in reverse and the car would not move I had to call a tow truck to take my car to my home. I was advised by a mechanic who read my car electronically that it was the RR Brake Caliper Only the left side is responding the right is totally out and that's why it's locked up. I now have to take my vehicle back to the Honda dealership to get it fixed. I've had to get rides to work and unsure if this is covered under my warranty. If not I'll have to pay with funds that I do not have. The vehicle had been shaking slightly as I made stops that day. If I had been on the road I may have been rear-ended if I had to make a stop. There were no warning information messages prior to this incident occurring.
My Honda CRV's shift knob button broke off while I was driving. I had a hard time parking the car. After 20 minutes or so of trying, I somehow managed to park the car. After I parked, I noticed there were broken pieces of plastic inside the shift where the knob button was attached. I was scared to drive after this incident. Also, I felt this as a safety concern as I can't imagine my daughter being in this situation as she will be a new driver soon. I am attaching the pictures for your reference. Thank you.
I bought this car on April 30,2022 for $30,000. It had18,0000 (plus) miles. Within 6 months the idiot lights would come on and all safety controls were cancelled. When this first happened, I was frightened that I would be involved in an accident or the car would just shut down. I called a Dealer close by and was told by their service manager to take it to an Auto store, have them put it on their computer to tell me what was wrong. I did that. Was told I needed an oil change. Had the oil change and things were ok for about 4 days when all lights came back on again scaring the h__l out of me. Had a private mechanic check it out and was told it needed an oxygen sensor. Then the car wouldn't start. Turned out the battery was low, so I replaced the battery. Warning lights did not go on for a couple of days. I then went to the local Honda dealer who told me to bring the car in and for $190 they would use their computers to tell me what was wrong. Can you imagine what Chutzpa that takes? They, knowing what the problem was yet charging me to tell me. I am now out of State. Took vehicle into closest dealership for oil change, tire rotation. Told service of dashboard lights, what I had done so far, and asked them to figure out problem. They said I needed $1500 fuel injectors which would have been covered by the warranty but that ran out on length of time. The car only had 30,000 miles but was 6 years old. Suggested I ask Honda for an extension of the warranty to cover costs. The lights are still continuously on now. All safety features are essentially off. I am afraid to drive it in fear of having an accident. I have contacted America Honda for an extension of the warranty and will attach that timeline and phone calls to/from them. The reason for doing this is that I do not believe installing new fuel injectors will fix this problem. I think it is in the computer system itself. And I am in danger of having a crash.09
This problem has happened several times. All of the system warning lights activate. Electronic emergency brake, driver assist, tire pressure, lane departure, emergency collision warning etc. etc. etc. approximately nine total. None of these features work after the system lights activate. If the emergency brake and other features won’t work it is a safety issue ! The only way to reset these features is to unhook the battery for approx 5 minutes. I’ve complained to the dealer with no solution. After the system is reset it lasts for 3 or 4 weeks and then starts again. This problem started approx 6 months ago.
