My rear windshield blew apart out of the blue, with nothing near it or happening. It completely shattered and glass is everywhere.
rear windshield spontaneously shattered when car was parked in the garage
The rear windshield exploded and shattered into pieces when I turned on rear defroster. No warning, no impact or other vehicles involved. This is a safety issue, I have my 3 year old son at the backseat, and the pieces of shattered glass flew pretty far out, and luckily I wasn't driving fast in the highway. I took my car to the dealer and they are ordering part to fix my rear windshield and my rear wiper.
My rear windshield on my brand new car shattered in January 2024. This caused a giant hole to form in the window and almost removed all the glass from it. I took the car into the dealership and the service technicians there determined it was caused by a manufacturing defect when they installed the windshield. They taped some garbage bags to cover it up and said that I would be on a loaner waitlist and have a rush order put on my parts. They also claimed the car is still drivable even though it is winter, and driving without a windshield is torturous, and also the bags could easily fly off and cause an accident to someone behind me. The dealership then came back and said they will not be providing a loaner and will only provide me a rental when the parts come in as they can not justify the expense of giving me a rental/ loaner beforehand. It has been a month and still no parts or other solution has been provided. The dealership and corporate office for the brand is saying that I have to drive around without a rear windshield and bags taped over it or find another solution on my own. This all seems insanely unethical and and a terrible example of customer service. They have not helped me with my safety issue of my rear windshield and are refusing to take on any expense to help me in the slightest, besides the actual repair itself whenever that may occur. It has been over a month since the windshield broke, and the parts keep getting pushed out further.
On [XXX] my wife left the house in her 2023 HRV traveling less than one mile when her back glass made a loud pop and shattered. The loud pop startled the wife. We have to travel 40 miles to the dealership for inspection. Not a fun trip for a couple of seniors in mid January. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
While driving the vehicle at any speed, the steering wheel sticks when trying to make even the slightest movement. No warning lamps or malfunction codes appear on the instrument panel when this is happening. Additional effort is needed by the driver to overcome the sticking behavior. I took the vehicle my local Honda dealer in Selma, TX and they were able to replicate the problem. They recommended replacing the EPS gear box (rack and pinion) however the part is on critical backorder with American Honda. No timeframe is currently available on the availability of this part. The vehicle is driven by daughter and I am very concerned that this issue could cause her to lose control of the vehicle causing injury to her and other drivers around her. At the dealership I was advised to call American Honda because there is nothing they can do. I will be calling the manufacturer to report this issue and find out if a replacement vehicle can be provided and if not then perhaps a loaner while the vehicle is repaired. I would recommend creating a recall for this safety issue. I have read in various online forums that this is common issue with this vehicle.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The rear window. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The glass exploded after the rear defroster was turned off. This happened while I was on the highway. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The dealership said it was the first they have heard of this. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No.
I was slowing down for a stop sign and the back window spontaneously shattered. Nothing struck the window and there were no cracks in the window previously.
Shortly after parking, the vehicle in the garage there was a loud bang sounding like a gun shot. When I walked behind my car I saw that my rear hatch window exploded out. I have not contacted the dealer yet but will first thing tomorrow morning.
Rear hatch window exploded on Jan 12th, 2024. Honda claims its related to the rear defroster in use or improper installation where the adhesive used comes in contact with the heating elements causing a hot spot in the glass thus exploding. The window was replaced on April 12th, 2024. The issue I have is Honda is NOT guaranteeing the replacement and just stating the warranty of 3 years / 36,000 miles. I waited 3 months for "the fix" and no guarantee? I will discuss further with the dealership.
Remote started car, parked in the garage, in cold weather which enables defrost on front and rear windshields. After only a few minutes I began driving when my rear windshield exploded/shattered out of the blue.
I was sitting in traffic today and suddenly heard an explosion sound and when I looked back my rear windshield was all shattered. It spontaneously shattered out of nowhere with no warnings. I was lucky that I was not moving and in traffic when that happened, because that scared me tremendously and if I was driving I could have crashed or something.
Rear window shattered, while defrosting was on 5:20am
My back windshield popped and shattered without anything hitting it.

I got into my HRV And closed my driver side door as normal. The back window shattered I was not parked under a tree or anything that could have fallen on the back windshield. I was sitting in the driver seat when it happened. The glass came into the car. I called my dealer, and they said they had not heard of a problem. However, after investigating myself, I found this to be happening to several people owning Honda Anda HRV.
I drove approximately three miles with my rear window defogger on. I parked in the garage (always parked in garage). The next morning I came out to a shattered rear window! Not using the defogger is not an option in Western New York. I am concerned of the safety aspect, if this happens while driving. Rear window seems very thin. I have pictures of the window. I had no warning or sounds previously. Vehicle only has 6800 miles on it. I'm currently waiting for a replacement window.
I arrived home and had just turned off my vehicle. I was sitting in the car talking on the phone when I heard a loud noise, like a bomb explosion. When I got out the car to inspect my vehicle and the area around, I saw that my rear windshield had exploded & was shattered. Even the area around the window frame was broken was shattered. My car was in park, there were no objects around or above my car as I was in the parking lot & there were no other cars parked there at the time. I went to the dealership who stated they spoke with Honda and apparently there are other people who have experienced the same thing & that it may be a defroster issue. I was instructed to contact my insurance at this time since no active recalls have been issued. I was able to schedule an appointment for 1/10/24 through my insurance to have it repaired. Before this incident, I have had no issues with my car.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while driving at 50 MPH, the rear defroster was activated, and the rear window exploded. The vehicle was not diagnosed but was repaired by a mobile window repair company. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.
Side window shattered on its own. Luckily it was parked and no one was inside the vehicle. This will be the second time, same story, just a different window with this car.
Rear windshield was exploded while the vehicle is not in motion
Closed my front passenger side door and the rear hatchback glass completely shattered. Hundreds of pieces of shattered glass were now inside the rear lift gate section of my vehicle. The glass shattered around the edges and in the center. Some remained around the edges but continued to fall out at the slightest movement, such as when I got in the vehicle and closed my door to call the dealership. Contacted my dealership who said there were no recalls on my vehicle and they stated they had not heard of this, though I've seen many similar complaints here. Dealership suggested I place a claim through my insurance company. It hardly seems fair to me that my insurance should foot the bill for an obvious manufacturing defect on Honda's part.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked in a parking lot, the contact started the vehicle, and the rear windshield exploded. There was no impact on the rear windshield that could have caused the rear windshield to explode. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.
The rear window spontaneously shattered today. It was a cold morning approximately 35 degrees. Car was auto-started to warm it up. After driving the care for approximately 1/2 mile and while stopped at a stop light, the rear glass spontaneously shattered.
Sticky Steering. Steering wheel provides resistance when turned and causes sudden jerky changes in direction of travel. Even though direction change is minimal it causes constant steering wheel adjustment. The symptom occurs at all speeds from a slow roll to highway speeds. Vehicle has 10,890 miles on it.
While driving home from my doctors appointment today my back window just popped. No one was behind me or in front of me. While diving I hear a pop and looked through my rear view mirror and the whole glass was shattered!
THE BACK WINDSHIELD EXPLOIDED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY
Rear glass shattered out not where while me being in the car. rear glass safety issue.
Vehicle was parked outside workplace during the work day. Upon returning to the vehicle the rear glass is completely shattered, only being held together by the tint. The vehicle was parked in front of the workplace cameras which prove there was no vandalism or outside cause for the rear glass to shatter.
Rear windshield shattered for no reason. No impact. Car parked. No previous accidents. No warning lights or signals.
Rear windshield exploded while the vehicle was parked in the garage. The glass formed a dome outwards in the center of the windshield approximately 1.5 inches.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH, the rear windshield imploded. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000.
Vehicle was parked, not in use and the rear window exploded.
On January 3rd, 2024, while the car was parked in the driveway, the rear windshield spontaneously shattered soon after parking at around 630pm. Upon inspection, there were no signs of any impact from a foreign object. The rear defrost was previously turned on to assist with visibility while driving in cold weather conditions. If this had occurred while driving, the sound of the glass itself spontaneously shattering would have completely distracted me and would cause an accident.
WAS JUST DRIVING ALONG AS NORMAL, HEARD A POP SOUND, LOOKED BACK AND MY WHOLE REAR WINDOW WAS SHATTERED WITH A BIG HOLE TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE GLASS.
While at the gym one evening on 1/3, I came back to my car and noticed a shattered rear windshield. Initially my thoughts were 'did my car get broken into?' however, nothing was missing and my gym is located in a fairly safe part of town. Also, this occurred early evening, one of the busiest times at the gym and an unlikely time for a break in. I notified the police, my insurance company, and the gym. The police reviewed footage of the parking lot and didn't see anything that suggested a break it. Shortly thereafter, I became aware of many HRV owners experiencing 'spontaneous' shattering of the rear windshield. The situation was beginning to make more sense. I believe that I am a victim of this defect.
The contact owns a 2023 Honda HR-V. The contact stated that he became aware that the rear windshield had shattered due to glass shards on the ground. There was no impact to the rear windshield that might have caused the rear windshield to shatter. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 13,500.
The vehicle was parked in my carport, and when I opened the door to get inside, the rear window (rear windshield) shattered. There was no foreign object, it wasn't hit by anything, it just shattered.
Question (Q): What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Answer (A): My rear windshield spontaneously shattered while I was driving on local roads. I was driving around 30mph during a clear night with good visibility, weather was around 57F on [XXX] around 8:07pm. Yes, I would like to have this inspected if requested. On the website both on computer and cellphone, the Upload button is not working anywhere for me to submit this information. Please let me know where I can submit my photos and videos to. I have attached a Google Drive link where the dashcam, photos, and videos of the damage can be viewed and downloaded for the investigation. [XXX] Q: How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? A: The rear windshield spontaneously exploded and made the vehicle unsafe to travel in under any capacity. The shattered glass is a safety hazard for myself and anyone near the vehicle. Q: Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? A: The rear windshield is permanently shattered and I will request that the dealership service center holds onto the windshield for inspection. Q: Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? A: At the time of answering this, the vehicle has not been inspected by anyone yet since it is around 9pm on [XXX]. I will take the vehicle in for service tomorrow at the Honda Service Center. No, there was no warning lights or anything to indicate that the rear windshield would randomly make a popping sound and spontaneously shatter such as the way it did on [XXX]. I was on the road for about 5 minutes when there was a load bang I was not sure what happened then a I drove crack crack so I pulled over to look at and saw a big hole in my back window. No body was around when it happened.
I was driving at night not near anyone on the highway when my back windshield just shattered. It was huge pop noise so I thought maybe a tire, so I looked at my warnings and nothing was going off. I couldn’t see out of my back windshield clearly because the shattered glass, I didn’t know it was shattered till I got home. I did have my defrost on, I don’t know if that plays a part.
I was driving at night and no one was near me and my back windshield shattered. It made a huge pop sound, I checked my warnings for anything like my tires but nothing was showing up. Nothing hit it. I did have my defrost on but I don’t know if that plays a part.
Sitting at a stop light and our back windshield just shattered. No impact. Car had been on for an hour so nothing to do with heating. Windshield just completely shattered and fell off. Car had recently been inspected a few weeks ago and nothing reported at the time. We had two dogs in back of car and could’ve been bad.
I was stopped at a stoplight and the rear windshield shattered.
back wind shield exploded out of nowhere while on the freeway almost crap myself
I was driving my car and suddenly my rear windshield shattered. I thought somebody throw something but no one was around my car and I could not find any object in car. Then I checked online about this issue and HRV forum has multiple incidents reported similar to this one. This is manufactured issue and low quality product issue. I am very disappointed with Honda. Their service was below par and now I came to know about recall for seatbelts issue. We don’t get call from dealer and not recieved any communication letter.
steering is sticky. causes erratic steering especially at highway speeds. dealer inspected an stated it was normal. no lights or warnings. we feel its unsafe and sold it back to the dealer.
I was driving to work at 6:52am when my rear windshield spontaneously shattered. There was no proof of impact or anything when I inspected the windshield. I did not have my rear defroster on nor did I rinse my car with hot water prior to driving. I do have photos and videos but the link will not allow me to upload, the button disappears when I click it.
