NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2016 Honda Pilot. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the vehicle made an abnormal sound. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the crankcase bearing had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was towed to a Honda dealer who confirmed the diagnostic result; however, the contact was informed that the vehicle could not be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) because neither the VIN nor the model year was included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH and attempting to accelerate, she heard an abnormal clicking sound coming from the engine compartment. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the rod and crank in cylinder #3 were damaged, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (Engine and Engine Cooling), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
My 2016 Honda Pilot Touring keeps stalling at traffic lights and randomly on the road. We just took it to the dealer last week and received the "we can't replicate the stalling, please bring it back when it happens again." They checked the battery and found it healthy. A couple times, the car has refused to restart until several minutes after the stall and sometimes it has taken several presses of the "Start" button before it finally engages the starter. The car completely shuts down when this occurs. Nothing works.
My vehicle has been loosing power when accelerating. This has been an ongoing issue for approximately six months or so. I' have taken it to two different mechanic shops locally and both have stated that some of the fuel injectors are not working properly and 5 cylinders are misfiring. That is the reason the vehicle is loosing power. But they don't understand why the engine light or any other light are not coming up on the cluster board. Vechicle continues to jerk and shudder everytime we stop and only happens on 2 and 3 gear to the point we have to stay two cars back everytime it is in use to avoid rear ending any other vehicles. Feels like it looses power to the point of turning off then begans to pull. The RPM needle jumps up and down when the shuddering begins. It is a great concern such that i feel it poses a risk to my family and other drivers. I have been to the dealership but they will not do anything about it unless the engine light is on which at this point it has not turned on making impossible to diagnose the issue through the dealership. I did provide the dealership with documentation from other shops but they wouldn't accept them as they would have to run diagnostic themselves. I did check for recalls and other complaints. A recall was issued for the fuel injectors but as stated dealership will not do anything unless the engine light turns on. They wouldn't even test drive it to confirm the issue. I feel that if this issue isn't addressed my family or others drivers will end up getting hurt. There has been hundreds of people who have complained of the same issue on the internet forums and many have filed complaints with the NHTSA. This complaint is for record purposes in the event of injury due to engine failure on my vehicle.
Check engine light is on and flashing. Vehicle is also making a knocking noise coming from under the hood. Tech inspected vehicle and verified the customer concern at this time. Tech has found that the lower engine block is making a knocking noise at this time. Tech has pinpointed the failure to an internal component of the lower engine block. This issue seems to be related to the connector rod recall issued in November, including 2016 Honda Pilots. However, my vehicle’s VIN is not included in the recall. I contacted American Honda for a goodwill claim. However, they refused my claim and any assistance with repairing my vehicle.
The radio and all audio functions (including hand free communication) will stop working and making a constant static noise. The issue make noise the entire time. It is distracting and I cannot communicate using handsfree technology. This vehicle was diagnosed by a master technician at Acura (dealer at which it was purchase) as needing a new audio unit. The issue just began a few weeks ago. I've read multiple forums of owners the same make and model having the same issue. On Monday my wife was outside the vehicle with the keys in her pocket. All of a sudden the car alarm went off without anyone touching the vehicle or without her bumping the button on the key fob. Also, on Tuesday morning she walked into the garage and noticed the vehicle’s headlights and taillights were on. The key was not in the vehicle nor did she have it on her. She opened/closed all doors thinking a door was left open. The lights eventually went off. Later that morning she got in the car and it would not start. The battery was jumped and she took it to our mechanic. The battery is fairly knew and after testing it, the mechanic said it had “plenty of juice left” but he did recharge it. While doing other maintenance to the car, he noticed the headlights/taillights coming on sporadically. He could not locate any electrical issue so he suggested I take it to the dealership. This morning (Wednesday) I took it to a Honda dealership and after running some diagnostics, it was determined it was a “keyless entry control unit” issue. The service tech told me he has seen this before in other Hondas and said it is a major safety issue if not repaired. The repair cost me over $1,000, and one I feel Honda should reimburse me for. This was not a normal wear/tear issue (like brakes, transmission, tires, etc.). This is a Honda internal electrical issue that malfunctioned. And as the service tech mentioned, it’s an extremely dangerous issue that causes safety concerns for my family (and other potential Honda owners).
I was driving and the engine was making noises and started losing power. I heard a loud noise and the engine died. There is a recall on these engines. and my car is the year make and model.
Auto Start/Stop feature has repeatedly struggled to restart car at stop lights. Disabling this feature manually after starting the car is the only way to disable this feature. Initial failures were due to battery wear, but after replacing the battery we still have intermittent issues where the vehicle will not restart after the auto stop feature has shut off the engine. This is very dangerous in traffic or in an intersection when expecting the vehicle to restart when you remove your foot from the gas and it instead shuts the vehicle off and puts the vehicle in park. It can take multiple tries to successfully restart the car after this shut down event. The dealership has not been able to replicate the issue.
driving on highway engine made a large bang and lunged froward and started to rattle and driver panel lite up with codes and check engine lights . towed to repair shop .. quoted need a new engine . known failure rod issue .... had the vehicle towed to nearest dealership and was told the engine needed to be replaced and contacted Honda America for assistance and said since I did not do all of the repairs at a dealership my product loyalty was not good enough for repair .. this is my third honda . had the engine replaced at 175k total cost of repair was $6,200.00
My vehicle had a recall on my car hood because its loose. When you drive it when its windy it moves. I had recall fixed at a Honda dealership in Hutchinson Ks. Now my hood is loose again. I had to pull off the interstate yesterday to try to get it to latch because it was moving, and it was very windy, and I was afraid it was going to blow open on me. I wanted a whole new hood, and I was told I'd have to pay for that myself. I really think a new hood and latch system should be included in recalls with this type of vehicle. Im honestly afraid to go over 65mph in my cars current condition.
I was sitting at a light. The car started idling funny. Then stalled. Never started again. Dealer is telling me something is loose in the engine. I saw a recall for honda pilots, but the vin numbers were XX1 and GG0. My vin is [XXX] , what is the difference. *The engine failed. Yes available for inspection. *If engine fails while driving on highway. Car completely shut down. * No dealer did not open up engine because I can't afford to pay for them to look and see what happened would cost roughly around 1,000.00. *Dealer looked at it just told me that something is loose in engine. Suggest I put in new or rebuilt engine. * Yes the engine light came on about 30 seconds before car completely shut down. The short engine block failed while driving the car. Engine experienced problems prior to event such as engine shudder, engine shutoff while driving, and ultimately an engine failure while driving. Honda dealer stated that a failure in the short block is due to a manufacturer defect, but did not identify what the defect is. Having a car shut off while driving is extremely dangerous. Having a car engine fail while driving is also extremely dangerous. Car has been well maintained to all Honda standards. The 2016 Honda Pilot should be investigated for engine shudder, engine shutoff and premature engine failures.
Car broke down while driving due to engine failure. Honda dealership reported metal debris in oil pan and bearing material from connecting rod bearing coming apart causing noise. Engine short block was required to be replaced. Honda dealership also noted that this is a manufacturing defect. This is an extremely dangerous manufacturing defect to cause an engine failure on the highway. Honda needs to take action promptly to identify all vehicles affected by this manufacturing defect and they also need to reimburse me for the repairs caused by their manufacturing defect. There were no warning indicators prior to the engine failure. While driving the check engine light came on immediately following a knocking noise and car was no longer able to be driven and had to be towed. Car had only one owner (me) and was properly maintained. The Honda dealership has all maintenance records for this vehicle. Honda refused a goodwill warranty even though the failure was due to a manufacturing defect of the connecting rod bearing. Honda had already been investigating this failure as noted in the Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-751, OMB Control Number 2127-0004 document but failed to recognize this since it wasn't publicly reported until Nov 9. Honda''s failure to recognize their responsibility for this failure despite investigating this exact manufacturing defect is not only irresponsible but also unethical. Honda is liable for all manufacturing defects. Honda needs to investigate my vehicle immediately and reimburse me for these charges due to this manufacturing defect.
Connecting rod bearing failed and caused engine failure. Car began inoperable on the highway. Honda has issued recalls on this exact failure but has failed to recall my vehicle. Honda needs to be held liable to investigate my vehicle. This is a rare failure that is ONLY caused my manufacturer defects. This is the third inquiry I am sending and no one has done anything to demand that Honda issues recalls for ALL affected vehicle for the manufacturing defect. Please do your part so I don't have to hire an attorney. Thank you
Transmission issues with jerking and stalling and vehicle showing transmission overheating and improper shifting of gears
Unable to open my gas cap door either by pushing the gas opener button by driver side door or manually from the latch located in the trunk. I was running low on gas and am unable to refill the gas. Others offered to help by forcing the gas door open but said they would definitely damage the car. Gas attended looked at it and was unable to open gas door to refill gas tank. Without gas, my car is unable to turn on and drive. My kids were in the car with me and we were stranded. My car did not show any signs of warnings for this issue.
The contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving 45-50 MPH, the engine made an abnormally loud banging sound. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer sent a claim to the manufacturer; however, the claim was denied. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where the engine was replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The contact followed up with the manufacturer and a case was opened. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000.
REFERENCING PRIOR SERVICE BULLETING HONDA 20-117 Warranty Extension: 2016-17 Pilot and 2017 Ridgeline Keyless Start System Error with DTC B12C5 This failure continues to occur but Honda will no longer cover since mileage is greater than 125,000 miles. The time is within the limits. This appears to be a known issue which is why the service bulletin was issued. My car has now had this issue but it wont be covered since I have 140,000 miles on my vehicle. Yet if its a known issue , its a known issue?
While driving on the highway, all of a sudden all the check engine light flashed on, and then a popping sound came from the engine and all the lights on the dash came on. The vehicle would no longer accelerate. I was able to pull off to the side of the road. I was able to get the vehicle started and carefully drove it home. We took it into a car place, and when they were test driving it to see what the issue was the engine seized.
My spouse was stopped at a traffic light, when the light turned green she accelerated but immediately lost power and the vehicle was stalled in the middle of the intersection. She tried to start it but would not restart. We had to leave the car in the intersection while waiting for the police and towing. She worried that a vehicle would collide with our vehicle and until she was able to exit the vehicle and move to a nearby sidewalk.. Luckily she made it safely and no-one collided with the car. We had it towed to our local mechanic. The inspected the car and found that the bearing had seized up the crankshaft. I connected with Honda and they told me to take it to a local dealer to have it inspected by them. The dealer had the vehicle for two weeks and came up with the same conclusion. After a little back and forth with Honda they declined to give any help with fixing the engine, (a $20,000 repair estimate). I ended up selling the car for junk. Two weeks later a friend sent me an article that Honda was recalling 2016 Pilots for the same incident that happened to my car. There were no warnings prior to the engine failure. My vehicle is not listed on the recall. Honda knew the problem and was attempting to issue a recall.
My 2016 Honda Pilot engine had a rod knock and eventually was replaced by Acura of LibertyVille. When I reported this problem to libertyville Honda (IL) they said vehicle not on any recall list, but now I'm hearing that 2016 and newer Pilots have same issues as my car, when I called customer relations at honda, they are still telling me there are no recalls for your VIN, even though my vehicle 2016 Pilot. I believe that somehow something is missing and more VINs were impacted, according to what I read online.
While driving at freeway speeds of 80 mph, and while passing a vehicle, Engine wants to temporarily slow (like it's dropped a cylinder or two), and the car will NOT speed up. Then engine warning light starts to blink, Emissions Problem light starts to blink, then car downshifts several gears and slows dramatically - or will rev at 4500-5000 rpm. ON THE INTERSTATE! DRAMATICALLY UNSAFE. I've reported this to my dealer, Penske Honda in Carmel, IN - and they can't resolve any issue or see a stupid "error code". This has happened three times in past 3 years. IT"S TERBBYLY UNSAFE. Car goes from 80 to 60 and engine and transmission go on the blank.
Engine Auto Start failure at stop-light. Total vehicle shut-down instead of just the Engine Auto-stop/start. Happens several times annually - first noticed probably in 2021. Then can't restart car until I manually "Turn-off" vehicle. It's crazy - at a stop light and the car then car wants to fail when I release from the brake - when the light turns green. Have cars behind me honking. It's a major vehicle safety issue.
the auto engine idle stop repeatedly malfunctions causing the stopped car to not start up when it is time to go. It takes several seconds to restart the car and, in the middle of an intersection, this is very dangerous. It has happened numerous times. The dealer repeatedly says that there is nothing wrong with it. There are no warning signs when this happens. I am reporting the date of the last incident below
My vehicle stalled and had a horrible noise while stalling. Dealership took it back to their shop as we thought if was due to yhe work they just finished and after inspecting they determined a rod bearing had spun. The safety issue is we stalled out on the highway in the middle of traffic, almost got into several wrecks with my child in the vehicle. Only light that came on while stalling was the check engine light.
The contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 MPH, she heard an abnormal clanking sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle stalled and the contact coasted to a stop. The contact stated there was warning light illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the connecting rod to the crankshaft had failed, and the short block needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.
On 9.14.23, rod to crankshaft broke leading to catastrophic engine failure and damage. I had to coast off of the exit ramp I was on to the side of the road; then have vehicle towed to Martin Honda Services. ~$13k in repairs. This was prior to their knowledge that on Nov 13, 2023, Recall Report 23V-751 was issued. For the reason my engine blew up. However, my VIN is NOT covered in this recall. My hope is they expand the netting of VIN population to include ALL impacted 2016 Honda Pilots! $12,694.00 REMOVED OIL PAN FOUND BROKEN CYLINDER #3 PISTON ROD,DAMAGE ENGINE BLOCK AND CYLINDER HEADS. P&A ON SHORT BLOCK AND BOTH CYLINDER HEADS AND ALL NEEDED GASKETS $529.50 PERFORM V-6 VALVE ADJUSTMENT WHICH INCLUDES REPLACING BOTH VALVE COVER GASKETS.
I am reporting a problem with the 2016 Honda Pilot audio system. It sounds identical to the reported problems that have lead to a recall for the 2018-2022 models. The system works fine initially, but anywhere from 10 min - 1 hour into driving the system becomes staticky. The static noise starts out low, but quickly gets to the point where nothing else can be heard. This is across all input channels: radio, ipod, XM Satellite, etc.. The system then eventually shuts down and no sound can be heard.
WHILE DRIVING HOME, ABOUT 30 MPH, MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON, TRANSMISSION FEELS LIKE IT IS SHIFTING ODDLY, THE STEERING GETS HARDER TO STEER THE LONGER YOU DRIVE AND IT GOT HARDER TO BREAK LIKE THE BRAKES WERE FREEZING UP.
1. The camshaft on the engine, took to a mechanic and Honda dealership, they are both saying its the camshaft. 2. Cannot drive the vehicle because every time I get up to about 20 - 30 mph the shuts off without warning while driving, not even coasting to a stop enough to pull over to a shoulder of a highway, leaving me and my 3 kids stranded in the middle of busy roads/highways. 3. yes, Honda issued a "technical service bulletin" but refuses to fix the issue without causing unnecessary hardship to owners who are affected. 4. The manufacture Honda Co., is aware the Camshaft was "not machined according to spec" based on their own bulletin. 5. No warnings as far as I can tell, it just started happening more and more frequently until I can hardly drive it anywhere without it breaking down. Once it breaks down a bunch of unrelated warning lights come on such as, "Emission system problem, power steering problem, Vehicle stability /assist problem, Hill Start problem, Trailer Stability Assist problem, Road departure mitigation system problem, Keyless start problem, along with the check engine light.
The OEM stereo will only work for a minute or two. This issue is known across all types of forums across the internet, as well as at dealerships. The reason this is a safety concern, as far as I'm concerned, is that when you are in remote areas of the country on the highway system, you will often see signs informing you to tune into an AM station for road conditions and advisories. If my stereo does not work through no fault of my doing, but due to a poor design by Honda, how am I to tune into the station to receive relative information to road/traveling conditions? These locations often coincide with having no cell service, as they are in rural/remote/mountainous regions. My only recourse is to buy a new stereo, that will eventually fail with the same issue. This issue was recalled for 2018 and newer Honda Pilots, how was 2016 and 2017 left out of this recall? Seems like gross negligence on the part of the NHTSA to me.
at 45.000 miles all of my fuel injectors was replaced due to emission system problem appear on my dash board for free. At 97,000 miles we were on vacation in Houston TX, when the same emission system problem pop up on my dash board. I went to Honda dealership for engine diagnosis-"faulty fuel injectors". Sad thing the replacement fuel injectors are back ordered. So we left the vehicle behind in Houston and we went home with a rental car. 2 weeks after Honda informed me the parts have arrived. The vehicle was brought to the dealership and got fixed. we had it transported back here in Chicago. Back here same emission system problem came up. now they reprogram the vehicle computer. after a day they released the vehicle same error came up. now the Honda dealership says that the catalytic converter should be replaced. Parts and labor totals to $3,200.00. That is so upsetting considering the age of the vehicle and mileage. Suppose to get to 200,000 miles. Major defect on the 2016 Honda pilot that needs to be address by Honda of America and investigated by NHTSA.
Crankshaft froze. Engine totaled.
My 2016 Honda Pilot was recently repaired as the Cam-Shaft had move within the care engine. My car has 109,000 miles on the vehicle, and should not have this issue given the cars age and the way that the car is driven. I am a suburban mom, who drives the car to work and with both of my children within my car. This put my entire family as risk driving within the care and could have hurt other drivers if the malfunction happened in the middle of the free-way or otherwise. The vehicle was inspected by the Honda Dealership for the issue. The vehicle has all of the dash lights flashing and the car was driving erratically, so much so that mid driving the car, it we were in a near miss accident due to the mechanical malfunction. The 2nd issue that has presented itself, it the start and stop button within the vehicle. It is a known defect to the vehicle.
vehicle died/lost power on interstate traveling near 75mph in heavy traffic. warning lights on dash came on. trying to maneuver through traffic to get to the side of the road was very dangerous. car taken to dealership and had a P0716 CODE stored in the computer. was told that there was a TSB for the issue but it was no longer in effect. they said it needed a TCM update. this is not an TSB issue but is a safety issue that should be addressed with a recall.
the auto idle stop stalls and does not restart when you press the accelerator. I have been caught stalled in the middle of intersections too many times to count. Well over 100. It is extremely dangerous in city traffic. Other drivers behind me are honking horns and it takes a while to restart the car.I have narrowly avoided a serious accident at least 25 times. The dealer has been told about the problem numerous times and is aware of this happening with other people with the same car. They check it out and say that nothing is wrong but then it will stall again on the way home from the dealership. You have no warning when this is about to happen.
The start stop feature will stall the car and the car will completely shut off. I had this "fixed" when the initial recall came out but Honda now says my vin doesn't qualify this time for this round of recalls even though it's the same issue. This is a huge safety concern. Please look into this further.
I am having issues with crackling and popping noises in my stereo system. I know that this is a common issue. I understand that there may be a recall.
At times, when you start the car, on the screen where the radio and Honda link and Bluetooth are a message ( like an email) with a red exclamation point appears. I check the HONDA LINK app and it says that it has to do with the brake system. I drive the car and it stays on or disappears. It will come back and the go away. It happens around every few months since July.
I drive my vehicle with the auto stop on. When I get to a stop light or traffic light and stop the vehicle, the engine shuts off as it should. When I let off of the brake and go to accelerate, the engine appears to start, then shuts all the way off. This happens multiple times during the ride and each time requires engine to be started manually.
THE ENGINE FAILED IN JULY OF 2023. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ON THE FREEWAY AND LOST COMPLETE POWER. NEW DRIVER WAS BEHIND THE WHEEL AT NIGHT GOING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH AND NO WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON UNTIL VEHICLE LOST POWER. LIGHTS AND RINGING SOUNDS THEN OCCURED. VEHCILE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. CONFIRMED ENGINE SEIZED AND COULD NOT CONFIRM AS TO WHY THIS OCCURED. VEHICLE HAD COOLANT, GAS AND OIL. NO SIGNS OF DAMAGE IN OTHER PARTS. RECOMMENDATION WAS TO REPLACE ENGINGE. HONDA CORPORATION REFUSED TO ASSIST WITH REPLACING ENGINE. NOVEMBER 12, 2023 RECALL 23V751000 WAS ISSUED FOR ENGINES INDICATING ROD BEARING MAY WEAR AND SEIZE THE ENGINE FOR CERTAIN 2016 HONDA PILOTS. MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL AND HONDA REFUSES TO ASSIST WITH REIMBURSEMENT AS STATES IN THE RECALL.
This vehicle has had an excessive amount of problems. The electrical system seems to be failing after much maintenance. Determining if there is an electrical short. The car alarm randomly goes when not triggered. The entertainment panel randomly adjusts volume settings and turns on and off on its own. The sunroof has opened and not closed back due to electrical issue. The gas gauge does not add the available fuel correctly after refueling. Sometimes, the gauge remains at zero or the same number. There is a horrible, annoying squealing sound that is coming from the front lower portion of the vehicle when driving. No one, including the dealership, have been able to identify where this loud squealing sound is coming from. Currently, the AC has failed in 120 degree weather. It has been a horrible experience for our family and we regret purchasing this vehicle!
i have a 2016 Pilot touring (69k miles on it now) and have now had this problem 5 times in the past 4 months where, I stop at a signal, the idle stop will engage and shut off the engine, but then it won't start for almost 20 seconds when i keep pressing the start button. Once the engine gets to start, it wont happen all the time but when it happens it creates a safety risk. I tried to get inspected and there is no issue with battery or the remote key fob. Considering the panic it creates for the passengers on the road, appreciate some action is taken to prioritize the fix or recall the parts that might contribute to this shut off.
Driving car on city street, without any warning the engine stopped working in middle of busy intersection. Engine would not turn over when tried to restart. No warning lights or messages prior to the engine stopping. Had vehicle towed to mechanic, they noted the engine is completely seized and had to replace engine.
Speakers static when on audio but hands free are clear through the speaker
Car left us stranded at busy intersection. Auto start system failed to restart vehicle. Car would not restart even after placing car back into park.
Roof molding comes loose and flies off while car is in motion on roads. Imposing risk to other drivers on roads. Once removed area is exposed which can result in increase in deterioration of vehicle.
