NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Honda Pilot. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Place vehicle into reverse gear, then backup camera displays on infotainment screen, The view on the screen displayed in purple , green and blue hues making the image of what is behind the vehicle unclear and unsafe to operate in reverse.
Rear Camera Failure even after recall performed.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V431000 (Back Over Prevention). The contact stated that after shifting into reverse(R) the screen image was pixelated blocking the rear-view image. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the coaxial cables needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 29,000.
came to stop sign at busy intersection and engine shutoff as part of the auto engine stop. The issue is when I let off the brake the engine did not restart and put the car in neutral. had to cut off and restart.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact stated while driving at approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle started to stall and lost motive power. The contact pumped the accelerator pedal to keep the vehicle from stalling. The contact stated that no warning lights were illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle to a local dealer who determined that the transmission fluid needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The failure mileage was approximately 97,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
The air conditioning system abruptly ceased emitting cold air, prompting the involvement of the dealership. Their assessment revealed a compressor leak stemming from the failure of the shaft seal.
Our 2019 Pilot has experienced intermittent stalling at lights since 2019 and the incidents have occurred more frequently in the past few months (multiple times per week). It has been taken exclusively to the dealer since purchased and for years, they said they were unable to duplicate it. Last service was 08/2023 and Sheehy Honda of Alexandria, VA stated that they duplicated it and fixed it (by resetting codes). Six days later, the stalling began again. I believe it's related to the Auto Idle Stop function. Yes, it's available for inspection. This puts us and others at risk when the car suddenly stalls and stops at a busy intersection with people lined up behind us, not expecting to have to brake. It requires putting vehicle in park, turning it off and restarting engine. It has not been inspected by anyone except the Honda dealer. Warning lights come on when this happens, as it's dying....collision mitigation, battery, and this has been told to the dealer. I recently read online that turning off "Auto Idle Stop" helps and this seems to be true.
Car drops to Nuetral while breaking at red light. Car must then be put to Park and turned off and back on before it can proceed. Highly unsafe when there are cats waiting behind.
NHTSA Recall # 23V-431. MOST cable needs to be replaced for the backup camera. Received recall notification on August 5, contacted dealer on August 7 to schedule repair. I was given November 28 as the date for the recall repair. That date is 113 days from my scheduled date. This time frame is unacceptable and more than the 60 days noted in the recall letter.
Auto-stop failed to restart the engine when stepping off the brake pedal after it had engaged while stopping for a traffic light. Although the car never had an issue with auto-start, the auto-start recall was applied at the same time as the hood latch recall. Since the auto-start fix was applied, the car has had several instances where it seemed at first like it might not start, but eventually did. This failure happened while on a road trip with my family and we were hundreds of miles from home. Sitting in a turning lane off a highway with when your engine doesn’t restart is very scary, especially as you’re trying to figure out the state of your car—while surrounding drivers are reacting to the disabled car in front of them—in order to figure out how to try restarting it. Dealing with a push button start, a push button transmission, all the safeties involved e tween the systems, and an engine that should be running is panic inducing.
When the vehicle comes to a stop it shuts off and will not restart. We have had it to the dealership for more than 7 times for the same time. They have sold us 3 new batteries and the car is only 4 years old. It is not the battery. It is a safety concern because of the damage of being rammed or being attacked in an unsafe area.
Backup camera malfunctioning. Display on infotainment screen shows vibrant colors, impairing visibility, only when in reverse and using the backup camera. All other screen displays are working normally. The vibrant coloring and overall visibility fluctuates pending how bright the sunlight is and how hard it is raining. I just went to my local Honda dealership (Price in Camden, DE) today to have the cable recall taken care of and confirmed the backup camera coloring is NOT a cable issue, but likely a camera issue. This is indeed a safety issue and I have seen across many online forums that others with 2019 Honda models report the same problem, with the cable recall not providing a solution.
the moonroof malfunctioned and came off of the track. I could not close or open it. we brought the car into Honda. They also had problems closing the moonroof, and had to manually force it closed. they werent sure if its the track or the cable or motor. They asked me what I did to cause this.. I said all I did was press the button to open it. it opened and made a crunchy noise when I pressed the button again to close it. there were no warnings , symptoms of this problem prior to it coming off of the track. my car was 6 months out of warranty. the cost of the repair was $4000, Honda customer service was contacted and they agree to pay 40% of the cost , so the repair cost me 1475.39. ive heard from other Pilot owners of this occurring . 3 of the other owners had this repair done FREE, out of warranty.... Its not like its something I caused.. I just pressed a button and failure.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the Collision Mitigation System, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, brakes, and seat belt warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that the RPM gauge operated as needed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 21V215000 (Fuel System, Gasoline), 19V298000 (Engine and Engine Cooling), and 20V439000 (Back Over Prevention, Electrical System). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while reversing, the rear-view camera displayed a distorted image. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the coaxial cable was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.
Auto start-stop failure. After the auto start-stop engages (turns off engine at intersection), sometimes the vehicle does not restart. I have to press the starter on the dashboard to restart and put the transmission back in gear. Other times, when it does restart like it is supposed to, it flashes a "collision alert warning" on the dashboard when it restarts. These incidents started about three months ago and are now happening much more frequently.
I am requesting a recall to be reissued to my vehicle. Recall is 23-047:6MX00 2019-23 pilot farka service cables safety recall. I bought my vehicle to Bay Ridge Honda for 2 recalls and an oil change on July 21, 2023. When I picked up my car, I was told everything has been completed. The next day I received a text from Bay Ridge Honda stating parts for my vehicle have arrived. That is when I looked over my invoice and it stated parts were on special order. I texted back Bay Ridge Honda the next day and they stated there were no open recalls on my car and all recalls are completed. I received a call 2 minutes from them, telling me to bring back my car as the recall has not been completed. I bring back my car on July 28, was told it would be about 2 hours to complete. I go back in 3 hours, was told the vehicle would be ready in a few minutes. I wait one hour later and am told that the parts are defective. Of course I’m upset at this point and told them to put the recall back to my VIN and I would go to another Honda. As of today, the open recall is not on my vehicle. Please update. Thanks. I have included the invoices and text with Bay Ridge Honda.
Crackling sound in speakers and error message on touch screen (entertainment screen front) MOST NET OFF and screen goes off. This is a safety issue as when we are drving on roads we are usually relying on google maps, when screen goes off during critical turns, driver gets distracted and park the car to side road, which sometimes is dangerous due to other fast moving vehicles. Many times when screen goes off it distracts the driver by not keeping eyes on road. The crackling sounds are very loud, it sometimes make the driver apply sudden braking on highways due to distraction.
I had a engine light showing P0430 which was dealer confirmed to need the fuel injectors replaced. This was the same that is shown in Service Bulletin 21-010. However, my 2019 was not covered under the extended warranty noted in the Service Bulletin for faulted fuel injectors since the extension only applies to "certain" vehicles. This appears to be a model wide problem since the dealership's parts department will not directly sell customers the replacement parts referenced in the service bulletin and seems like there is more of a problem that should be applied to all models.
My car was parked in my driveway, when I started the car, 4-5 warning lights started to flash in orange, ACC, LKAS, Automatic High Beam, Collision Mitigation Problem, Road Departure Mitigation Problem. When driving the vehicle, none of these safety features are working. Took the vehicle to the dealer and was told the Multi Purpose Camera had an internal failure and it was likely due to heat exposure. The vehicle only has 32,000 miles on it and it was not at any unusual heat exposure. The past 3 summers the temperature has been the same and no problems. This appears to be a Manufacturer Defect on this camera but dealer won't accept that. The same day I took my car to the dealer, on 7.12.23 for the check up, I was told 4 other customers came in with the same problem. That is Not Normal. I live in Southern California and the temperatures have been in the 90's for the past 2 weeks. I googled this and found many other Honda Owners have had the same problem and Honda is wanting to charge us about $1800-$2,000 to get this camera fixed but again, this must be a Manufacturer's Defect. There are thousands of Honda vehicles on the road and these safety features are not working. Thank you.
Transmission fluid is burning up within 15,000 miles or less. When the flood is going bad the vehicle studders as you accelerate and it's not safe. Ive seen a lot of people online with the same issue. Contacted Honda of America and they also know about the issue and are not doing anything to help.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while the vehicle was stopped at a red light, the engine failed to immediately restart with the Auto Start/Stop function engaged. During the failure an orange warning light illuminated, and the vehicle momentarily shut off before restarting independently. The failure occurred on several occasions, causing the vehicle to drift backwards while stopped on an incline. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 22,000.
For several months there was a crackling sound coming from the dashboard/ speakers. I mentioned this problem to my service advisor on at least 2 different appointments and even showed him a recording of the problem. It was never fixed. Finally, My entertainment center stopped working altogether. It would not even turn on. I once again reminded my service advisor about the crackling/ popping sounds and wondered if these problems were related. They stated a cable was loose, reconnected and my entertainment center began to work again. Unfortunately, the crackling and popping sound continued. When using the audio system, the speakers would abruptly make crackling and popping noises, similar to static noises, which caused the audio to interrupt and cut out. Even when I turned the audio off, the speakers continued to make the crackling and popping sounds. This was extremely nerve recking, and caused safety concerns because I was not sure what was going on and where sounds were coming from when I first begin having this issue with the car. It happened randomly. The audio would also stop and dvd would stop working where image no longer appeared on the back screen. I took it to the dealership again today and received a quote for about $1,600.00 to have it repaired. I have found multiple complains online for this same problem. Honda was well aware of the problem and should extend warranty and cover my repair cost fully. Below is result of inspection done: Recommended service $1,462.41 Sound System - Amplifier: 3rd row seats need to be removed to access amp The amplifier is a component of the vehicles sound system. 2019 Honda Pilot EX-L AWD; approximately 76k miles; all routine maintenance performed as scheduled Power Train (Jun-2023)-- had to replace both seals on on transmission / transfer case within the same month as case was leaking transmission fluid. Problem has been confirmed and repaired by two service centers (one seal each) with one at dealer and one at independent service center. No warning lights or indicators, just fluid leaking. Results could have been catastrophic transmission failure. Also replaced "burned" transmission fluid. Fuel / Propulsion System (Jun-2023) -- per service technician at dealer, loose / failing spring in high pressure fuel pump / fuel joint pipe. Per independent service center, if / when pump fails, fuel will spill into the engine. No warning lights or indicators, just noise when starting and accelerating. Trying to schedule service to address this but service centers and dealers are booked and part seems to be hard to come by taking 1-2 weeks to obtain. Neither of these issues should be happening at 75k miles and certainly not on a Honda.
Radio Screen is not working and completely Dark. The Backup Camera does not work! The radio and anything tied to the main screen does not work! Took the car to dealer and got car back in the same condition. Do not feel that Honda has a fix! I will take car back sometime in future when they order and recieve parts to repair the Backup camera and entertainment system.
While driving on two lane roads and roads with left turn lanes, the "BRAKE" warning comes on almost every other on-coming car. Most instances it just the warning light and sound, but every once in a while the automatic brakes are applied by the system momentarily at times. This became worse on a highway while driving in the left lane and passing a truck that was in a left turn lane, the system braked immediately and without prior warning, nearly causing a rear end collision by a vehicle behind. This occurred twice on a recent trip. Went to the Honda dealer and they informed me the only thing they can do is set it to the closest setting or turn off the driving assist system.
Auto off engine idle. At stop after activating the auto off, the engine cuts off and no power to move vehicle. Unable to restart or shift into park for at least 20 seconds. Have to shift to park, then off and on again.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the vehicle was hesitating while driving. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was intermittently illuminated. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
The ACC, LKAS, Collision Mitigation, High beam, lane departure warnings light errors are on. This happened 2 years ago and Honda wanted me to pay $1,200 to replace all sensors of this car. Of course I just left it. It's not worth the hassel. However, for a car bought brand new in 2019 to have these systems fail in 2023, and for this to be a main component advertised for consumers to buy vehicles, it is not good. We pay thousands of dollars for a car because it has these safety features only for it to fail within 4 years and then expect the customer to pay over $1,000 to fix, is simply not right.
Rear ended the vehicle in front. Vehicle in front had emergency braking activate, our pilot did not activate emergency braking. It does often go off on 2 lane highways when a large vehicle is coming the other way or when trying to take a freeway exit, but apparently not when you're about to hit someone.
Honda issued a Safety Recall in 2021 to replace a faulty fuel pump on our 2019 Honda Pilot. We took it to Buena Park Honda in November 2021, where they replaced the pump. This weekend the pump failed while we were driving through Parker, Arizona, stranding us on the open highway with two young children in 102 degree weather, putting us at risk of being hit by passing vehicles or heat stroke. We had to have the Honda towed over 130 miles to Unicars Honda in Indio. The dealership informed us that the fuel pump had failed and since the Recall was closed when the recall pump was installed, the cost to replace now would be our expense or charged against our extended warranty. Just prior to the vehicle shutting down we received an alarm and the check engine light came on. I have read that if a recall component is replaced with another defective component this repair should be fully covered, "free of charge" by the manufacturer. I have not received any documentation from the Service Department as yet.
The rear view camera isn't working. The camera itself is the problem according to the dealer, which isn't covered by a similar recall that was related to a cable. They claim the module itself stopped functioning for no known reasoning, which costs about $800 to replace.
Jumping when shifting and shifting delays
On or about June 15, 2023 I put my 2019 Honda Pilot in reverse and observed the dashboard screen displaying an assortment of green and purple colors, which is blocking the rearview image, making backing up unsafe. My vehicle is just shy of 5 years old and only has 33,000 original miles, has never been involved in an accident and is always garaged. This image occurred at the same time that NHTSA issued recall 23V-431. Prior to this time frame, the backup camera image was perfect. It is my belief that this issue is directly related to the aforementioned recall. My local Honda dealer complied with the recall repairs and advised that the camera unit itself was bad. I doubt this assesment, as the camera has no moving parts.
I was at a stop light and my car cycled off as it does when I am stopped and then it did not start back up. It stalled and the dash told me to put the car in park and press the start button and the brake. I tried it several times before it started back up. Very dangerous situation. I had been noticing prior to this that it would hesitate to restart and my car would ding like it does when the light comes on for a service notification. But it would start - this was the first time that it stalled.
CMS IS NOT WORKING. Just stopped.
2019 Honda Pilot AWD fuel pump replaced per recall in June 2021. Replacement fuel pump failed June 2023 and was replaced by Honda dealer. Initial replacement part examined by Honda service dealer when replacing fuel pump for the second time, not by others. Honda service report states that fuel pump assembly found to be corroded at connection for haness plug. I do not possess the initial fuel pump replacement. Multiple failure messages appeared at time of fuel pump failure, unable to start vehicle.
The seatbelt that serves the middle row center seat detached from its attachment point during normal use without an accident. We are the original owners of the car with no accidents. My daughter has sat in that seat for 4.5 years and 50,000 miles. She is currently 10 years old. Had we been in an accident, I believe that she would have not been protected by her seatbelt. One day, we noticed a large bulge in the back of the car roof that we hadn’t seen before. The next day, when my daughter puller her seatbelt out, there was resistance when she pulled. Once the seatbelt did come out, white fabric came out of the seatbelt hole and the seatbelt fabric was torn/frayed. We brought the car into the dealership where we purchased it. Upon inspection, the bulge was the reel assembly that had detached from the frame of the car. The seatbelt assembly was wedged between the metal roof and the fabric trim - not attached to anything. It is being repaired under warranty on 6/16/2023 at the dealership.
The Honda Sense camera failed due to an internal fault just outside the manufacturer's warranty. Dealership was needed to replace it in order to regain function at out of pocket cost. Upon the camera failing the driver is met with 5 warning lights that the following are no longer active: LKAS, ACC, Automatic Braking\Forward Collision Warning, Adaptive Headlights, and Lane Mitigation System. You have to clear each of these before you can use the main dash (including MPH). Cruise control is completely disabled. Although there is no asserted timeline for the life of the camera, research shows (and dealership sates) that this is a known issue. Reaching out to Honda's technical support team returns a somewhat blanket response stating that although campaigns exist for other issues with my VIN it is my monetary responsibility to handle this particular issue, although I was writing to the campaign department to add to the growing list of those with this particular issue in hopes of moving toward a recall, not because I expected there was one in place for this issue. For reference, Vehicle was parked when issue began.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while at a stop light with the Auto START/STOP feature activated, the vehicle did not immediately restart after releasing the brake pedal. The contact had to shift to the park and restart the vehicle manually. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced the idle stop module, and the failure was remedied however, the failure later reoccurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 82,000.
On May 27, 2013, while approaching a traffic light controlled intersection, I applied the vehicle brakes (depressed the brake pedal) with no response. My vehicle speed was slow enough to allow me to make a right turn at the intersection without damage to my vehicle or others in the vicinity. Within a few seconds (less than 5) the brakes started responding correctly with no subsequent occurrence, to date.
The car did not auto restart when it shut off at a stop. I had to put the car into park and press the engine start button again. Supposedly there had been a software update done a few thousand miles ago but the car has shut off and not restarted 3x in the last 2 weeks so issue isn't fixed
Car is at 56K mileage. I was at a stop light engine was running, when I took my foot off the brake and tried to accelerate the engine died, the dashboard flashed a collision warning, (there were no cars or animals near my car), then all the screens dashboard behind steering wheel and on middle console all went blank. I restarted the car and made it home fine. Drove the car the next day for several stops (street and highway driving), then the same thing happened at a stop light and it restarted and I made it home fine. The third day there were no problems while driving 30+ miles streets and highway. The fourth day, drove about 15 miles to work and all was fine. Drove about 13 miles street and highway just fine. Ran an errand and car would not restart. Pressing the engine start button resulting in clicking but not engine start, headlight flashing, and the dashboard behind steering flashing various warning messages (cycled through several as I held the start button down, collision, braking system failure, power steering, etc.) but never started. Let it rest for ~3 hours and still would not start, same result with clicking and flashing headlights and warning messages.
The transmission has slipped now twice while driving. The car keep on giving jerks hard after the car starts moving The car is in automatic drive mode. During acceleration, the car will jolt forward, also when using the brakes. The dealer did recognize the problem but said it is not covered by warranty and that transmission needed to be flushed… which was going to cost $740 and parts extra. After initial diagnostics recommended to flush transmission fluid 3 times. For even Diagnose they charged me $179 . I Have done maintenance on time Transmission fluid was change before 30000 miles for the first time and now they are asking to flush it 3 times ,As per Honda Manual recommendation every 30000 miles we need to change Transmission fluid . They should replace either Transmission or do the service free of cost under powertrain warranty(60000 miles) as I only have 46800 miles within 4 years of purchase.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, the vehicle came to a complete stop. The contact attempted to accelerate, and the vehicle stalled while making an unusual sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a faulty fuel pump. The contact was informed that the upper high-pressure fuel pump needed to be replaced; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the dealer informed him that the vehicle had experienced the same failure as in NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V215000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that while reversing the vehicle, the rearview camera was inoperable. The “Camera System Failure” message was displayed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but confirmed that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V440000 (Electrical System, Back Over Prevention) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
The cars smart car controls stopped working. ACC, Collision Mitigation System, LKAS, Road Departure Mitigation, and Auto High Beam Problem warning lights are on.
The front passenger side control arm ball join was found cracked open with the car under 34K miles (around 4 years of light use) during a normal routine maintenance.
Fuel pump is malfunctioning
Vehicle automatically applies brakes in several unwanted situations: (1) driving down 2 lane road going around curve with other vehicle approaching from opposite direction (2) something small in roadway such as plastic bag or small limb (3) normal stopping when car thinks other vehicle is too close in front but driver is under complete braking control These actions are dangerous at normal highway speeds and on wet road!!!! This has happened multiple times, not just on date listed below.
