TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V125000 (SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM). WHEN LEAVING THE DEALER, HE NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK COMING FROM THE VEHICLE AND AN ABNORMAL OIL ODOR. HE THEN INSPECTED UNDER HIS VEHICLE AND SAW THAT THE POWER STEERING LINE HAD RUSTED. THE DEALER WAS THEN CONTACTED AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THE STEERING WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED FOR THE STEERING. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 121,900.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND CRASHED INTO A SNOW BANK. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES BY STRIKING HER HEAD ON THE PASSENGER DOOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARMS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V125000 (SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM) AND WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS ONE YEAR PRIOR TO THE CRASH. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TECHNICIAN DID NOT REPLACE THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BUT APPLIED A CORROSION TREATMENT AND ADDED A WAX APPLICATION INSTEAD. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE WAS 78,800.
LEFT SUNVISOR'S BRACKET BREAKS AND SUNVISOR FALLS INTO STEERING WHEEL, CAUSING SHORT STEERING TURN. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SUB FRAME BROKE ON THE VEHICLE A YEAR AGO. THE FAILURE ALSO CAUSED THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AXLE AND THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE WHEEL WELL TO BREAK. THE LEFT FRONT FENDER WAS ALSO DAMAGED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER THIS WORK WAS DONE, THE FRONT RIGHT AXLE AND THE WHEEL WELL BROKE OFF WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH. THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL AND A CRASH OCCURRED BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT RECALL 09V125000, FRONT CONTROL ARM WAS RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THERE WAS ADDITIONAL DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE CONTROL ARM FAILED. THE CONTACT DIDN'T MENTION IF THERE WERE ANY INJURIES. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 100,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE STEERING BECAME UNCONTROLLABLE AND THE WHEEL BEGAN MOVING RIGHT TO LEFT. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL AND COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD; WHEN SHE INSPECTED, SHE SAW THAT BOTH FRONT TIRES WERE TURN INWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE WHEEL BEARINGS, POWER STEERING, STRUTS AND LUG NUTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 138,000.
THE CAR CANNOT ACCEPT MORE THAN 0.5 TO 0.7 GALLONS OF GAS AT A TIME WHEN FILLING. IT IS NECESSARY TO STOP FILLING THE CAR FOR 20 TO 30 SECONDS BEFORE ADDING MORE GAS TO THE TANK. IF THE GAS PUMP RUNS TOO FAST OR PUTS MORE THAN THE MENTIONED AMOUNT IN, GAS OVERFLOWS OUT OF THE TANK DOWN THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN REPLACED THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE FRONTAL AIR BAGS AND THE SUPPLEMENT RESTRAINT SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE. ALSO, THE SATELLITE SENSOR WAS REPLACED. THE DEFECT WAS RELATED TO A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 08V533000 (AIR BAGS: FRONTAL: SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE); HOWEVER THE NOTIFICATION WAS RECEIVED AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE AT THE EXPENSE OF THE OWNER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED FOR REIMBURSEMENT WHICH THEY REFUSED TO HONOR FOR THE PREVIOUS RECALL RELATED REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,076.
I DRIVE A USED 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA GT. AFTER RUNNING A SEARCH AND FINDING THAT YOU INVESTIGATED THE SONATAS FOR SEVERE RUST ISSUES IN THE WHEEL WELL AREA, I KNEW I SHOULD WRITE TO YOU. MY CAR STARTED VEERING TO THE PASSENGER SIDE. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER. THEY FOUND A RUST-CAUSED HOLE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM. IT HAD COME FROM THE INSIDE OUT AND EATEN ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE ARM. THEY TOLD ME I WAS LUCKY THAT MY WHEEL WELL HAD NOT SNAPPED OFF THE CHASSIS. WHEN I WENT TO PICK UP THE CAR AFTER IT WAS FIXED, THEY SAID THEY HAD PUT THE BROKEN CONTROL ARM IN A VICE AND IT HAD SNAPPED EASILY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO MAKE A NOISE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE. UPON EXAMINATION THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT WHEEL WAS STRAIGHT AND THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT WHEEL WAS TURNED TO THE RIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE BOTH FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND SWAY BAR LINKS WERE REPLACED DUE TO RUST. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND INFORMED HIM THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V125000, SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, THE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR BROKE AND FELL ON THE STEERING WHEEL, CAUSING HIM TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. THE DEALER STATED THAT HAD TO PURCHASE THE SUN VISOR AND BRACKET TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V125000 (SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM). THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT BOTH CONTROL ARMS EXHIBITED SEVERE RUST CORROSION. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CONTACT HAD SAFETY CONCERNS REGARDING THE REMEDY REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. WHILE DRIVING AT 30 MPH, A VEHICLE ABRUPTLY MOVED IN FRONT OF THE CONTACT. THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT CRASHED INTO THE PRECEDING VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO HER CHEST. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED HIP INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED FROM THE SCENE. THE DEALER ADVISED ALL RECALL REPAIRS RELATED TO THE AIR BAG WERE PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE AND THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE AIR BAGS (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBERS: 08V532000: AIR BAGS: FRONTAL: SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE AND 00V332000: AIR BAGS: SIDE/WINDOW). I HAVE A PENDING CASE NO. [XXX] WITH HYUNDAI. MY SON'S VEHICLE HAS BEEN AT ADVANTAGE HYUNDAI IN HICKSVILLE, NY (THE "DEALER") SINCE APRIL 5 PENDING A RECALL REPAIR (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NO. 09V125000). I CONTACTED THE DEALER AGAIN TODAY AND SPOKE TO MICHAEL KEILY (516-465-7700) WHO INFORMED THAT HE HAD NO IDEA WHEN THE NEEDED PART WILL BE AVAILABLE AND THEREFORE HE WAS UNABLE TO GIVE ME A DATE BY WHICH I CAN EXPECT THE VEHICLE TO BE REPAIRED. MR. KEILY ALSO INFORMED ME TODAY THAT HYUNDAI CORPORATE WILL ONLY PAY $35 PER DAY FOR A RENTAL REPLACEMENT VEHICLE. I CONTACTED ENTERPRISE CAR RENTAL AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT A COMPACT VEHICLE WILL COST $58.50 PER DAY GIVEN THAT MY SON IS 21 YEARS OLD. MY SON HAS BEEN WITHOUT A VEHICLE FOR A MONTH, HAS NO MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION TO GET TO HIS SUMMER JOB AND CANNOT AFFORD THE ECONOMIC HARDSHIP OF PAYING AN ADDITIONAL $23.50 PER DAY. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI CORPORATE (1-800-633-5151) AND AFTER BEING ON 'MUSIC HOLD' FOR OVER 2 HOURS, TWO DIFFERENT CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES INFORMED ME THAT THEY WOULD NEED AN ADDITIONAL 2 TO 3 BUSINESS DAYS BEFORE THEY COULD PROVIDE ME WITH AN ANSWER AS TO WHETHER HYUNDAI WOULD ABSORB THE FULL COST OF A RENTAL VEHICLE. HYUNDAI HAS FAILED TO REPAIR MY SON'S VEHICLE 'WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME" (PAGE 14 NHTSA "MOTOR VEHICLES SAFETY DEFECTS AND RECALLS- WHAT EVERY VEHICLE OWNER SHOULD KNOW") AND THEREFORE THEY SHOULD BE COMPELLED TO PAY FOR THE FULL COST OF A RENTAL VEHICLE WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY. SIMULTANEOUSLY, THE DRIVERS SIDE CONTROL ARM SNAPPED AND CAUSED THE CONTACT TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND CRASHING INTO A DRAINAGE DITCH. THE POLICE ARRIVED TO THE SCENE AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED ACCORDINGLY. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 114,036.
2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. CONSUMER STATES PROBLEM WITH AIR BAG MODULE *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED SHE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THE AIR BAG MODULE. HOWEVER, TWO MONTHS PRIOR, SHE WAS INFORMED THE VEHICLE NEEDED AN AIR BAG MODULE DUE TO INTERNAL FAILURE. THE AIR BAG LIGHT HAD ILLUMINATED AND REMAINED ON. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED BUT HE WAS UNABLE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED BECAUSE THE PARTS NEEDED TO MAKE THE REPAIR WERE NOT READILY AVAILABLE. THE DEALER ADVISED THERE WAS A NATIONAL BACK ORDER FOR THE PART AND COULD NOT PROVIDE AN ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED WITH THE SAFETY OF OPERATING THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT FEEL THE RECALL REPAIR WAS BEING HANDLED IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 50,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 52,000.

THE DRIVER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS DETACHED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE LOWER CONTROL ARM AND DRIVE AXLE SHAFT ASSEMBLY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V125000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM). THE CONTACT WAS DISPLEASED TO KNOW THE DRIVE AXLE SHAFT ASSEMBLY WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE FREE REMEDY REPAIR. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THIS TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA .THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIRBAGS ON HIS VEHICLE HAD NOT WORKED FOR YEARS AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON CONTINUALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE AIRBAGS DOES WORK AND THE FAILURE IS DUE TO THE CONTACT MOVING THE SEAT EXCESSIVELY. THE CONTACT VEHICLE WAS RECALLED TWICE, ONCE FOR THE WIRING HARNESS,THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO PAY HALF OF THE EXPENSES FOR THE REPAIRS. THE SECOND RECALL IS FOR THE FRONT LOWER PANEL (RUST) AND THE EARLIEST DATE THEY HAVE AVAILABLE FOR REPAIR IS 6/10/10 HE DOES NOT WANT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITH THE FAILURES NOT BEING REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 138000.

ON MARCH 27, 2010, WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A RUBBLING SOUND. SHE STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND WHEN SHE RE-STARTED IT, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE A MECHANIC ADVISED HER THAT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS THE FRONT CONTROL ARM. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER BUT RECEIVED NO ASSISTANCE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 88,000.

THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE SUBFRAME AND CONTROL ARM (RECALL 09V125000 SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM) SO SHE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. THE DEALER TOLD THE CONTACT BECAUSE THEY WERE BACKED UP, THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED UNTIL APRIL 24, 2010. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN DRIVABLE CONDITION BECAUSE THE SUBFRAME WAS WEAKENED AND THE PARTS FOR REPAIR WERE UNAVAILABLE UNTIL MAY 5, 2010 OR MAY 11, 2010. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER CONCERNING THE LENGTH OF TIME FOR THE REPAIRS (FIVE DAYS TO COMPLETE) BUT WAS OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THE REPAIR TIME WAS UNACCEPTABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 121,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA WHICH WAS PURCHASED IN OCTOBER 2009. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF LESS THAN 20 MPH AND PROCEEDING DOWN A HILL, THE VEHICLE CAME TO A VIOLENT SCREECHING HALT. THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE WHEEL HAD COMPLETELY BROKEN OFF OF THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER OF THE TOW TRUCK STATED THAT THE FRONT CONTROL ARM HAD RUST ON IT AND CORROSION FROM THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS A RECALL CAMPAIGN FOR THE FRONT CONTROL ARM (SEE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V125000) HOWEVER HER VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE UNDER 60,000.
1. THERE WERE NO NOTICEABLE EVENTS THAT LED UP TO THE FAILURE. HYUNDAI HAD A RECALL ON THE AIR BAG SENSOR CONTROL MODULE IN OCTOBER 2008 (RECALL ID# 80141 & 80132). I HAD THEM INSTALL THE NEW WIRING HARNESS AND CLIPS TO PREVENT A SPONTANEOUS FAILURE, BUT I HAD A FAILURE NONE THE LESS. 2. THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEATBELTS FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. I HEARD A LOUD BANG NOISE AND THE SEATBELTS TIGHTENED UP ON BOTH FRONT PASSENGERS. I NOTICED AN ODOR AFTER THE EVENT AND THE SEATBELTS WOULD NOT EXTEND OR RETRACT AND THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. I UNDERSTAND THIS SAFETY FEATURE WAS MEANT TO DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, BUT I DIDN'T HIT ANYTHING. 3. I TOOK THE 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA IN TO HYUNDAI TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE SRS CONTROL MODULE ON THIS VEHICLE APPEARED TO PERFORM ITS FUNCTION CORRECTLY FOR 8 YEARS; NO FAILURE SYMPTOMS WERE EVIDENT. DEALER RECALL WORK HAS RENDERED THE SRS CONTROL MODULE INOPERATIVE.
