WE HAD TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHTS SEVERAL TIMES WITH IN THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNING OUR HYUNDIA ELANTRA WHEN ON OCTOBER 5, 2002. THEY WENT OUT RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT. MY HUSBAND SWITCHED FROM BRIGHTS TO DIM FOR ON COMING TRAFFIC WHEN HE NOTICED HE WAS HAVING PROBLEMS SEEING DO TO THE FRONT HEAD LIGHTS BURNING OUT. HE MISSED SEEING A FOUR WAY STOP SIGN AND SIDE SWIPED ANOTHER CAR GOING ABOUT 35MPH. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG DEPLOYED AND SHATTERED MY LEFT WRIST WHICH HAS RESULTED IN 3 SURGERYS AND DAILY PHYSICAL THERAPY WITH HOPES OF GETTING THE USE OF MY HAND BACK. DT
AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS APPROACHING 65 MPH, STEERING WHEEL BEGINS TO SHAKE. HAVE BEEN TOLD BY SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS, TECH REPS, SELLING DEALER, THAT TIRES ARE OUT OF BALANCE, OR OUT OF ROUND. HAD TIRES PROFESSIONALLY INSPECTED AND BALANCED, AND CHECKED (OFF THE VEHICLE), VARIOUS TIMES.... IT IS NOT THE TIRES. SEE TSB 01-50-008, BECAUSE OTHERS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS. THAT TSB BLAMES IT ON THE "RADIAL VARIANCE" OF THE TIRES.... THESE ARE THE STOCK MICHELINS THEY PUT ON THE CAR, WHEN PURCHASED NEW..... IT THEIR TSB IS CORRECT, THEY PUT THE WRONG TIRES ON THEIR NEW CARS (IT HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN TO ME THAT THIS TSB IS CORRECT, AND THAT THE RADIAL VARIANCE PROBLEM IS CAUSING THIS). PLEASE CALL 1-800-325-6604, TO GET THEM WORKING ON THIS. IT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THIS CAR ON THE HIGHWAY (WHICH WE PURCHASED IT FOR).... YOU HAVE TO GO WAY ABOVE THE SPEED LIMIT, OR WAY BELOW, TO STOP YOUR ARMS AND HANDS FROM BEING SHAKEN RIDICULOUSLY..... THIS CAUSES A HAZARDOUS CONDITION FOR OTHER DRIVERS ON THE HIGHWAY. THE CAR HIT HEAD ON AND THE FRONT END BUMPER HAS FALLEN OFF. DESPITE THIS BOTH FRONT AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. MR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. THE CONTACT WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH ON AUGUST 22, 2002 AND THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE CONTACT WAS STRUCK BY ANOTHER VEHICLE AND THE ENTIRE DRIVER'S SIDE OF HER VEHICLE WAS CRUSHED. THE CONTACT WAS INJURED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF HER BODY. HER HEAD STRUCK THE WINDOW AND THE STEERING WHEEL. SHE ALSO DISLOCATED HER JAW AND HAD TO ENDURE THERAPY TO REGAIN HER SPEECH. THE CONTACT HAD SURGERY ON HER LEG BECAUSE THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED WITH $7,000 WORTH OF DAMAGES. THE CONTACT HAS PICTURES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE OTHER OCCUPANT IN THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS ALSO INJURED, ALTHOUGH BOTH WERE WEARING THEIR SEAT BELTS. THE AIR BAGS HAD NOT BEEN SERVICED PRIOR TO THE CRASH. THE CONTACT RECENTLY RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE, WHICH ADVISED HER TO REPORT THE CRASH. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9,000.
THE CONSUMER STATES THAT WHEN TRYING TO APPLY THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES, THE BRAKES WILL LOCK UP CAUSING THE CONSUMER TO HAVE A VEHICLE ACCIDENT. DEALER NOTIFIED. THE CONSUMER STATES THAT AFTER MCCONNELL, SHE HAD TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO BIG 10 TO CHECK THE BRAKES. THE CONSUMER STATES THAT SHE AND A PASSENGER WERE AT A RED LIGHT WHEN THE CONSUMER DEPRESSED THE BRAKES, NO STOPPING OCCURED AND RAN THROUGH THE LIGHTS. THE CONSUMER STRUCK THE REAR BUMPER OF THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HER. *SCC
CAR HAS PROBLEM STARTING AND THE RADIO AND LIGHTS WILL GO OFF FOR NO REASON WHILE THE CAR IS OPERATING. *AK
VEHICLE STALLS INTERMITTENTLY WHEN DECELERATING TO STOP. VEHICLE WAS CHECKED BY DEALER, WHO COULD NOT FIND CAUSE OF PROBLEM.*AK
THE VEHICLE HAS A MODERATE TO SEVERE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION THAT OCCURS AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. THE VIBRATION CAN, AT TIMES, SHAKE YOUR HANDS BACK AND FORTH AS THE WHEEL IS GRIPPED. OTHER PEOPLE I KNOW THAT OWN ELANTRAS COMPLAIN OF THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE SEVERAL TIMES, BUT NOBODY SEEMS TO HAVE ANY SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. THE DATE PROVIDED IS THE FIRST TIME I HAD THE VEHICLE IN TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE CAR FOR THE VIBRATION. I FIRST REPORTED IT DURING THE 12 MONTH/12,000 FREE ADJUSTMENT PERIOD. SINCE THEN, THE CAR HAS BEEN TO TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS TO ATTEMPT TO FIX THE VIBRATION. THE LAST SERVICE DONE TO TRY TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WAS A RADIAL FORCE BALANCE. THIS SEEMED TO HELP SLIGHTLY, BUT THE VIBRATION STILL PERSISTED AND REMAINS ENTIRELY UNACCEPTABLE.*JB
CONSUMER STATES THE VEHICLE'S PAINT IS PEELING DOWN TO THE PRIMER. CONSUMER IS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT HEALTH HAZARDS ASSOCIATED W/PAINT COMPONENTS.
SUNROOF POPPED COMPLETELY OFF THE VEHICLE WHILE PARKED.*AK
CAR SHIMMIES REALLY BAD AT 35 MILES AN HOUR REPLACED FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS FRONT STRUTS TIE ROD ENDS BOTH INNER AND OUTER TO NO AVAIL I AM SICK OF PUTTING MONEY IN THIS PIECE OF JUNK. *TR
CONSUMER APPLIED BRAKES AT 30-35 MPH, VEHICLE DID NOT SLOW DOWN. CONSUMER PUMPED BRAKE PEDAL NUMEROUS TIMES, NO BRAKING ACTION, VEHICLE HIT A CONCRETE WALL. VEHICLE WAS TOTALLED.*AK DRIVER AND PASSENGER SUFFERED INJURIES. NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED IN THE ACCIDENT. *JG
FRONT COLLISION AT 30-35 MPH, VEHICLE HIT CONCRETE WALL ON PASSENGER FRONT. NEITHER AIRBAG DEPLOYED, VEHICLE WAS TOTALLED. NO INJURIES.*AK
WHILE DRIVING FRONT PASSENGER'S WINDOW BLEWOUT. VEHICLE WAS CHECKED BY DEALER.*AK
THE BACK BUMPER FROM MY ELANTRA IS IN BAD CONDITIONS. THE PAINT IS HORRIBLE. I NOTICED THAT ITS NOT ONLY ON MY CAR BUT ALSO IN ALL ELANTRAS LIKE MINE. AND THEY ALL HAVE IT IN THE SAME SPOT AS MY CAR. ITS A ROUND BIG SPOT. LOOKS LIKE THE PAINT IS DEFECTIVE. *JB
AT 20,000 MILES, THE REAR TIRES WERE WORN BADLY AND UNEVENLY. WAS TOLD BY A MICHELIN DEALER IT WAS UNSAFE TO RIDE ON TIRES. WAS TOLD BY 2 DEALERSHIPS (WHO DID NOT LOOK AT THE CAR) THIS WAS A ROTATION PROBLEM, EVEN THOUGH THE FRONT TIRES WERE FINE. DEALERSHIP FINALLY REALIGNED REAR WHEELS, BOTH WERE OUT OF TOE TO THE SAME DEGREE. I COMPLAINED THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD REPLACE THE TIRES SINCE IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FACTORY SETTING AND NOT DUE TO NEGLIGENCE IN MAINTENANCE. THEY FINALLY AGREED TO PAY HALF THE REPLACEMENT COST OF THE TIRES. *NLM
WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH AND WITHOUT WARNING, A HEAD ON COLLISION OCCURRED, UPON IMPACT, AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, CAUSING MINOR INJURIES TO DRIVER AND PASSENGER.*AK
WHILE TRAVELING AT 50 MPH, A VEHICLE PULLED IN FRONT OF CONSUMER. CONSUMER HIT THE VEHICLE, CAUSING CONSUMER TO T-BONE. NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. *JG
INCIDENT DATE IS ESTIMATED. I HAVE PUT APPROXIMATELY 17,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE DURING THE COURSE OF EACH YEAR (NEVER MORE THAN 20K OR LESS THAN 15K) AND ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS, ALL BETWEEN 9 AND 15 MONTHS APART, MY HEADLIGHTS HAVE FAILED. ON ONE OCCASION BOTH LAMPS FAILED WITHIN A TWO WEEKS AND BEFORE I COULD REPLACE THE FIRST FAILED ONE RESULTING IN A POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS SITUATION WHERE I WOULD HAVE HAD NO HEADLIGHTS. EACH TIME MY LOCAL HYUNDAI SERVICE CENTER HAS REPLACED THEM AND ON AT LEAST ONE OCCASION, MADE COMMENTS SUGGESTING THIS WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH MY MAKE/MODEL VEHICLE. INTERESTING TO NOTE, THE FAILURES HAVE ALWAYS OCCURRED IN THE WINTER.
WHEN VEHICLE COMES TO A FULL STOP IT WILL HESITATE AND WILL CUT OFF.*AK
THE SEAT TRACK LOCKING SYSTEM DOES NOT ALWAYS HOLD. THE LOCK FAILS THROWING THE SEAT BACKWARDS ON THE TRACK WHEN PUTTING THE TRANSMISSION IN FIRST AND LETTING THE CLUTCH UP TO GO FORWARD. AFTER THE 2ND OCCURRENCE, , AFTER I ADJUSTED THE SEAT I PUSHED THE CONTROL LEVER DOWN FEELING IT CLICK IN. PERFORMING THIS EXTRA CAUTIONARY MOVEMENT HAS NOT ALWAYS HELD THE SEAT IN PLACE. THE LAST INCIDENT OCCURRED THIS JULY, 2002. I WILL TRY TO HAVE IT ADDRESSED BY THE DEALER AT MY NEXT OIL CHANGE.*AK
IF I WAS GOING ANY FASTER OR HIT ANY HARDER OR BY A LARGER VEHICLE, I WOULDN'T HAVE SURVIVED. I FIND IR UNBELIEVABLE THAT MY CAR WAS HIT ON THE FRONT CORNER PASSENGER SIDE AND THAT AIRBAG, NOR THE SIDE AIRBAGS INFLATED.D. *AK
THIS IS THE FIFTH ATTEMP TO REPAIR THIS CAR AT THE DEALER NOW THAT LEFT OFF A CLIP AND ENGINE LIGHT IS ON FOR THE FIFTH TIME I HAVE TO WAIT TWO WEEKS FOR PART. *AK
AIR BAG LIGHT ON INSTRUMENT PANEL IS ILLUMINATED. DEALERSHIP EXAMINED VEHICLE FOR THIS PROBLEM, AND DETERMINED AN UNKNOWN FLUID FROM CUP HOLDER CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL SHORT IN AN UNKNOWN COMPONENT FOR AIR BAG SYSTEM. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / DOCUMENTATION.*AK ABL.PCO
THE LATCH MECHANISM FAILED TO HOLD THE HOOD CLOSED AFTER A MINOR COLLISION. THE HOOD OPENED UP AND FLIPPED BACK UNTO THE WINDSHIELD, BREAKING THE GLASS, DAMAGING THE HOOD. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN AT 40 MPH AT THE TIME. THE LATCH POPPED OUT FROM THE HOOD THUS RELEASING THE HOOD. THIS LATCH WAS REVITTED ON TO THE HOOD ON THIN SHEET METAL WHICH STRETCHED AND RELEASE THE LATCH. IT SHOULD BE NOTE THAT I WAS BLINDED WHEN THE HOD FLEW OPENED AND WAS LUCKY TO BE UNHURT. I LOOKED AT OTHER CAR LATCH AND THEY ARE OF A SUPERIOR DESIGN. *AK
CAR HAS BEEN IN 4 TIMES SINCE PURCHASE FOR THE ENGINE LIGHT ON, THEY ORDER PARTS AND FIX IT AND WHEN WE GET IN BACK AFTER TWO DAYS THE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN THEY HAD TO GIVE US LOANER CARS TWICE ALREADY
THE REAR DOORS (MORE OFTEN THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR) BECOMES STUCK IN A SEMI-LOCKED POSITION DURING COLD WEATHER REGARDLESS OF PRECIPITATION. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO USE THE DOOR(S).*AK
CONSUMER REARENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING 35-45 MPH, A SECOND VEHICLE HIT CONSUMERS DRIVERS SIDE DOOR UPON IMPACT, DRIVER AND PASSENGER AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOYED. MINOR INJURIES, VEHICLE WAS TOTALLED. *YD
CAR WAS REARENDED BY A TRUCK AT APPROX 50MPH. AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. IS THIS RIGHT. THE HUYNDAI WAS STOPPED AND A 1978 FORD PICKUP RAMMED THE BACKEND. I AM WONDERING IF THE AIR BAG SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED? THE HUYNDAI DID HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF IT AFTER BEING RAMMED.*AK
AFTER 1 1/2 MONTHS OF DRIVING THIS BRAND NEW CAR I BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING. THE CAR WOULD WONDER IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS ON THE ROAD AND FREEWAY. I ALSO HAD STEERING WHEEL SHIMMY. THEY HAVE ALIGNED MY CAR AT LEAST FIVE TIMES ON DIFFERENT OCCASIONS AND FORCED BALANCED THE CAR TWICE TO NO AVAIL. IN MARCH OF 2003 AN INDEPENDENT SERVICE EVALUATED MY CAR AND FOUND BOTH TIE ROD ENDS (OUTERS)WERE EXTREMELY LOSE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY RODS BOTH THE FRONT TIRES ARE NOW CUPPED ON THE OUTER EDGES AND THE DEALERSHIP REFUSES TO REPLACE THEM. HYUNDAI PERFORMED THE WORK AND THE PROBLEMS GOT A LITTLE BETTER, BUT HAVE SINCE GOTTEN WORSE AGAIN. I AM SO FED UP WITH THIS CAR AND NEED HELP! I HAVE FILED COMPLAINT WITH HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT THE PROBLEMS STILL EXIST!
STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION AND SHIMMY SINCE NEW. TAKES PLACE ONLY AT SPEEDS ABOVE SIXTY MILES PER HOUR. HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND HAS NOT OFFERED AN ACTUAL SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM AS OF YET. NUMEROUS OTHER HYUNDAI OWNERS HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINT. *JB
CAR AT DEALER FOR REQUESTED ASSESSMENT OF FRONT END COMPONENTS UNUSUAL TIRE WEAR ON FRONT TIRES (RIGHT SHOWS INNER CORE -STEEL BELT? - COMING THROUGH ) UNSAFE TO DRIVE- THEY ARE 60,000 MILE TIRES -COMPANY REFUSES TO MAKE SURE IT ISN'T STRUCTURAL CONCERN- IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE SO IT WILL SIT AS LONG AS IT TAKES THEM TO ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR CHECKING THIS OUT. /TRANSMISSION REVS ENGINE TO IRRATIONAL #'S BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD GEARS. *AK
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE HIT A DIP IN ROAD AND SEAT SEEMED AS THOUGH IT WAS FALLING BACKWARDS. ALSO, HEARD A NOISE COMING FROM SEAT. SEAT APPEARED TO BE LOOSE. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER STATED NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH SEAT. PLEASE ADD VIN. *AK
WHILE DRIVING 25 TO 30 MPH ON A WET PAVEMENT CONSUMER'S VEHICLE HIT HEAD-ON INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE, AND SEAT BELTS DID NOT LOCK. CONTACTED MANUFACTURER, AND MANUFACTURER SENT SOMEONE OUT TO LOOK AT VEHICLE.*AK

WAS PUSHED ABOUT 400 FEET, SPUN AROUND AND HIT A CONCRETE BARRIER WITH PASSENGER FRONT. CONSUMER SUFFERED NERVE DAMAGE IN ONE LEG/ HIS WIFE HAD A BRUISED CHEST. VEHICLE WAS TOTALLED.*AK

ONE OR THE OTHER OF THE HEADLIGHTS MUST BE REPLACED AT LEAST ONCE EVERY SIX MONTHS. *AK
MY HUSBAND SWERVED SLIGHTLY TO MISS A COYOTE, THE HYUNDAI SANTA FE ROCKED BACK AND FORTH AND THEN ROLLED. IF IT WAS NOT FOR MY HUSBANDS EXTENSIVE DRIVERS TRAINING WITH THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT, I FEEL THIS ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE ENDED TRAGICALLY. I ASKED MY HUSBAND IF HE WOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING HIS DODGE PICK-UP TRUCK OR MY CHEVY IMPALA IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED, HE ANSWERED NO-WAY! I NOTIFIED THE DEALER AND THE HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY OF THIS. THERE WAS NO WARNING POSTED IN THE VEHICLE, NOR ON THEIR WEBSITE. WE HOPE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO PERHAPS COULD NOT CONTROL THE SUV IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS. THANK YOU, I HAVE NEVER COMPLAINED BEFORE BUT I FELT THIS NECESSARY IN CASE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED. I DO NOT HAVE THE VIN NUMBER FOR THIS VEHICLE AS IT WAS TOWED AWAY AND TOTALED. OUR INSURANCE COMPANY TOTALED IT, I HOPE WE CAN RE-COUP OUR DOWN-PAYMENT! AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN LEAKING ANTI-FREEZE AND OIL SINCE DATE OF PURCHASE. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED, BUT WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE LEAK.*AK
TRANSMISSION DOES NOT SHIFT PROPERLY BETWEEN GEAR 2 AND GEAR 3. TRANSMISSON APPEARS TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL AND GAINS 500RPM BEFORE SHIFTING. DEALER SAYS NOTHING WRONG AND CANNOT FIX. 8AK
EVERYTIME VEHICLE HAS BEEN STARTED ENGINE CHECK LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND REMAIN DURING DURATION OF DRIVING. BEEN IN CONTACT WITH DEALERSHIP, AND WAS INFORMED A GROUND WIRE IN CHASSIS WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. *AK
DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED WITHOUT REASON. AIRBAG LIGHT WAS ON FOR 48 HOURS PRIOR TO AIR BAG DEPLOYING. CONTACTED DEALER. DEALER STATED IT WAS THE MOISTURE INSIDE VEHICLE REASON AIRBAG DEPLOYED.*AK ABL.PCO
THE BREAKAWAY BOLT IN THE STEERING COLUMN HAD NOT BEEN SEATED DURING ASSEMBLY AS A RESULT STEERING WAS NOT PREVENTED AFTER THE IGNITION KEY WAS REMOVED AS PER THE VEHICLE'S OWNERS MANUAL , THE BOLT WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE AND THE STEERING FUNCTION WORKED AS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL.
TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE 2001 HYUNDAI ELANTRA HAD STALLING PROBLEMS. WHILE DRIVING AT 55-60 MPH ON THE FREEWAY THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. SHE STATED THAT IN JANUARY 07 WHILE DRIVING AFTER DARK THE VEHICLE JERKED HARD AND THE DASH OARD LIGHTS CAME ON AS THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE 'BARELY MISSED GETTING STRUCK BY A SCHOOL BUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN SHE TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE IT WILL NOT ALWAYS START.*AK
