MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN SHUTTING OFF OR STALLING AFTER FILLING IT UP WITH GAS. IT BEGAN OVER A YEAR AGO WITH SPORADIC INCIDENTS AND HAS PROGRESSED TO OCCURRING EVERY TIME I PUT GAS IN MY CAR. THE FIRST HAPPENED A FEW MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT MY CAR. I WAS EXITING A GAS STATION AFTER FILLING UP. AS I REACHED THE MAIN STREET AND WAS PULLING OUT ONTO THE ROAD, MY CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF AND BEGAN ROLLING INTO THE BUSY ROAD. I TURNED IT OFF, THEN ON AND IT BEGAN RUNNING AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED 5 MORE TIMES OVER THE SPAN OF 1YR 4 MOS, EACH TIME ONLY AFTER I PUT GAS IN MY CAR. IT HAS NOW PROGRESSED TO NOT STARTING AT ALL AFTER I PUT GAS IN MY CAR. RECENTLY, I FILLED UP MY CAR AND WHEN FINISHED , IT WOULD NOT START. I TRIED MULTIPLE TIMES, GIVING THE CAR BREAKS IN-BETWEEN AND IT EITHER TURNED ON THEN SPUTTERED AND DIED OR DIDN'T TURN ON AT ALL. IT TOOK 30MINS FOR ME TO START MY CAR BUT I WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO LEAVE THE GAS STATION. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND I DISCOVERED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR HYUNDAI SONATAS OF THE SAME YEAR (AND EVEN SOME OTHER MODELS/YEARS). THE NEXT TIME, I DIDN'T FILL UP ALL THE WAY BUT PUT IN 1/4 TANK OF GAS. ONCE AGAIN, MY CAR DID NOT START FOR AROUND 25 MINUTES. THAT DAY, I PAID $65 TO HAVE MY CAR LOOKED AT BY HYUNDAI AND WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED APPROXIMATELY $845 WORTH OF REPAIRS/REPLACEMENTS OF MY CANISTER, CANISTER VALVE, PURGE VALVE, AND MY IDLE CONTROL VENT VALVE (NOT INCLUDING THE $219 LABOR FEE NECESSARY IF CHARCOAL BITS HAVE GOTTEN INTO MY GAS TANK). I HAVE EVER HEARD OF ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS, MUCH LESS BELIEVE THAT IT SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONSUMER TO REPAIR A COMMONPLACE PROBLEM WITH HYUNDAI CARS. THIS PROBLEM IS DANGEROUS REGARDING THE CAR'S SPORADIC SHUTOFFS WHICH HAVE HAPPENED TO ME IN MULTIPLE COMPROMISING SITUATIONS. THIS PUTS THE CONSUMER'S LIFE IN DANGER IE: ROLLING INTO THE STREET AND BEING STRANDED IN MY CASE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH A CHILD OCCUPANT WAS SEATED IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE SEAT BELT WRAPPED AROUND HIS NECK SEVERAL TIMES. THE SEAT BELT HAD TO BE CUT FROM AROUND HIS NECK. HE WAS SUSTAINED LACERATIONS ON HIS NECK AND WAS TAKEN TO THE DOCTOR. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,237.
THIS IS THE FIRST DATE THAT I REPORTED TO THE DEALER THAT THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS ON. SINCE THAT TIME, THE LIGHT HAS GONE OFF AND COME BACK ON A MANY TIMES. IT WAS CHECKED AGAIN BY THE DEALER AND ALSO BY A LOCAL, CERTIFIED MECHANIC. IT USUALLY STAYS OFF FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS, BUT COMES BACK ON. IT IS NOW ON AGAIN. IN ADDITION, I'VE HAD TO REPLACE THE DOOR JAM SWITCH IN JAN. 2014. THE DOOR CHIMES (SEATBELT SOUND) GOES OFF RANDOMLY. NOW, THIS SOUND IS BACK. THE CAR RANDOMLY LOCKS ITSELF AND THE RADIO RANDOMLY GOES ON AS WELL. I FEEL THAT THE CAR HAS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THAT MAY MAKE IT UNSAFE. I AM ESPECIALLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE AIR BAG ISSUE. THE CAR HAS APPROXIMATELY 57,000 MILES ON IT. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS VEHICLE HASN'T BEEN RECALLED FOR ANY NUMBER OF REASONS. *TR
AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT HAS TURNED ON FOR NO APPARENT REASON. *TR
I AM THE SOLE OWNER OF A 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA. SINCE THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP, THE CAR'S AIRBAG LIGHT HAS COME ON INTERMITTENTLY. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR IN MULTIPLE TIMES FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR. EACH TIME, THE DIAGNOSIS IS EITHER CODE B1378 OR B1382. CONNECTORS ARE THEN RETAPED. REPAIRS LAST FOR ONLY A FEW MONTHS BEFORE AIRBAG LIGHT TURNS ON AGAIN. THE LAST "REPAIR" LASTED APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS BECAUSE THE SERVICE CONSULTANT SUGGESTED THAT I NOT ADJUST MY SEAT FORWARD AND BACKWARD AS THIS MIGHT LOOSEN THE WIRING/CONNECTORS. FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS I DID NOT ADJUST MY SEAT (RATHER UNCOMFORTABLE GETTING IN AND OUT OF CAR) BUT THE AIRBAG LIGHT DID STAY OFF. IT IS NOW ON AGAIN. HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND DEALERSHIP SAY THAT I NEED TO BRING THE CAR IN AGAIN FOR A DIAGNOSIS. THEY WILL NOT COVER THE DIAGNOSIS OR REPAIR. I HAVE BEEN ARGUING THAT I SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST BECAUSE THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FROM THE BEGINNING. THEY HAVE NEVER REPAIRED THE PROBLEM. WHY SHOULD I BRING VEHICLE IN AGAIN FOR THE SAME "DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR" WHEN THE REPAIR IS NEVER ACHIEVED. I AM BEYOND FRUSTRATION. PLEASE HELP! MY CAR IS RUNNING WITH INACTIVE AIRBAGS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH IN WHICH THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WERE NO REPORTED INJURIES. THE SAME FAILURE OCCURRED ON TWO PRIOR OCCASIONS IN WHICH THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS NEVER TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED BUT IT WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE THE BODY DAMAGES REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 175,000.
AIR BAG LAMP RANDOMLY TURNS ON AND OFF. PAID TO HAVE IT FIXED ONCE BUT AFTER SEVERAL DAYS SAME TROUBLE RETURNED. AS I UNDERSTAND, IF THE AIR BAG LAMP IS LIT THE AIR BAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY. THIS WOULD SEEM LIKE A MANDATORY RECALL FOR A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION. *KB
AIRBAG LIGHT STAYS ON. I HAVE TAKEN IT BACK TO DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND HAS NOT BEEN FIX CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY.
AIR BAG LIGHT 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA IS ALWAYS ON. I HAD IT RESET 1X. I CANNOT GET MY CAR TO PASS INSPECTION AND FROM WHAT I'M READING ONLINE THIS COULD COST UP TO 1600$..I CANNOT AFFORD THAT KIND OF FIX AND MY EXTENDED WARRANTY DOESN'T COVER IT. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE RECALLED BECAUSE THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 05/06 SONATA. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED. *TR
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON WHEN IT RAINS 2005 SONATA AND TRANSMISSION WON'T SHIFT TILL THE LIGHT GOES OUT. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH ON A 2 LANE HIGHWAY AND SHE MERGED INTO THE LEFT LANE WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY SPUN OUT OF CONTROL CRASHING INTO A CONCRETE WALL. THE DRIVER RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO DID NOT DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
I HAVE REPLACED PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHTS TWICE IN THE PAST SIX MONTHS. NOW BOTH BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING. THE FUSE IS FINE AND THE BULBS ARE FINE. I FOUND RECALL ON OTHER MODELS OF SONATAS FOR THIS SPECIFIC PROBLEM OF BRAKE LIGHTS BUT HYUNDAI SAYS THAT MY CAR IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. THEY SAY THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT NEGOTIATED IN THE RECALL. *TR
1. THE CAR (HYUNDAI SONATA) HAD A FRONT END COLLISION WITH A TRUCK THAT SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. THE ACCIDENT RESULTED IN SEVERE DAMAGES TO THE FRONT OF THE CAR. 2. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. 3. THE VEHICLE IS IN THE BODY SHOP RIGHT NOW. NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN YET. *TR
LOW BEAM HEADLAMPS BLOW OUT APPROX. EVERY 3 TO 4 MONTHS. NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO GIVE ANY REASON FOR THIS. AUTO PARTS PERSONNEL STATE THAT HEADLAMPS SHOULD LAST FOR YEARS. LAMPS IN THE 2005 SONATA HAVE TO BE REPLACED AT LEAST 3 OR 4 TIMES PER YEAR. DEALERSHIP COULD NOT PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION CONCERNING HEADLAMP FAILURES. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2005 SONATA. REPLACEMENT LAMPS ARE VERY WEAK UNLESS SYLVANIA SILVERSTAR ULTRA NIGHT VISION LAMPS ARE USED, BUT THEY ARE ABOUT $50 FOR A PACK OF TWO. THAT IS AT LEAST $150 TO $200 PER YEAR FOR LOW BEAM HEADLAMPS. DOES ANYONE HAVE A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING EVERY THREE TO FOUR MONTHS SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN JUNE 2005. *TR
OUR SRS AIRBAG LIGHT COMES ON TIME AFTER TIME. WE TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY TURN IT OFF, IN A COUPLE OF DAYS IT WILL COME BACK. WE'VE BEEN TOLD WHEN THE LIGHT IS ON THE SYSTEM IS NOT FUNCTIONING. IT COMES ON AT TIMES FOR NO APPARENT REASON. IS THIS COMMON ON HYUNDAI'S? *TR
I OWN A 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA. IT SEEMS THAT THE BRAKES ACT FUNNY (DON'T WORK RIGHT/LONGER STOP TIME) WHENEVER IT IS WET OR COLD OUT. I HAVE HAD WORK DONE ON IT BY THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRONT BRAKES WERE FROZE UP AND ONLY HALF WORKING. THEY WANTED $45 TO CLEAN THEM FOR ME. INSTEAD I HAD MY NORMAL MECHANIC DO THE CLEANING WHEN HE REPLACED MY REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. HE DID THE CLEANING FOR FREE. ABOUT A MONTH LATER ON MY WAY HOME, DRIVING THROUGH THE RAIN I CAME UP TO A STOP LIGHT WITH 3 OR 4 VEHICLES STOPPED AT IT, I PRESSED THE BRAKE WITH ABOUT FIFTY FEET BETWEEN MY VEHICLE AND THEIRS TRAVELING AT 45 MPH AND THE CAR DIDN'T SLOW DOWN AT ALL. I USED MY EMERGENCY BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN BUT STILL HIT A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. NO ONE WAS HURT. I CAN'T SAY THE SAME FOR MY CAR... IT HIT AN SUV. THE SUV HAD MINOR DAMAGE BUT MY CAR'S FRONT END WAS DESTROYED, AND THE AIRBAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. THE CAR WAS TAKEN BACK TO MY MECHANIC FOR REPAIRS AND TO HAVE THE BRAKES CHECKED AND THE BRAKES WERE STICKING A LITTLE BUT ALL HE COULD FIGURE OUT IS THAT THE CALIPERS NEED MORE CLEARANCE. THE BRAKES WORKED FOR HIM WITH NO FIXING BUT HE ALSO DROVE IT IN FAIR/SUNNY WEATHER. TO SUM UP THE INFORMATION I DO REGULAR MAINTENANCE ON MY VEHICLE. THE BRAKES HARDLY, IF AT ALL WORK IN COLD AND WET WEATHER. AND NOTHING IS REALLY BEING DONE EVEN AFTER I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE ISSUE. WHEN I SPOKE TO THE MECHANIC AT THE DEALERSHIP HE SAID IT WAS COMMON FOR THIS CAR TO HAVE BRAKES FREEZE UP DUE TO RUST BUILDUP AND OFFERED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THEM CLEANED (ONCE AGAIN FOR $45) THERE IS ALSO A PART AVAILABLE FOR EXTRA MONEY OF COARSE THAT IS A NEW CALIPER SLIDE ASSEMBLY WITH ADDITIONAL CLEARANCE. THIS TELLS ME THAT HYUNDAI KNOWS ABOUT THE ISSUE BUT IS UNWILLING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNED A 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH THAT DESTROYED THE VEHICLE AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THREE INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE DRIVER AND TWO REAR PASSENGERS WERE REPORTED INJURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TOWING COMPANY LOT. HYUNDAI INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE AIR BAGS FUNCTIONED PROPERLY. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 95,000.
FOR THE THIRD TIME, THE AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT IS ON IN THE CLUSTER PANEL. LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER CANNOT TELL ME IF THE AIRBAG IS OPERABLE. I'M SHOCKED AT THE NUMBER OF AIRBAG COMPLAINTS FOUND ON THIS SITE FOR THE 05 SONATA AND THE FAILURE TO DEPLOY. I HAVE RECORDS INDICATING LOOSE CLIPS, DEFECTIVE MODULE REPLACED, ETC. ON SERVICE FOR AIR BAG LIGHT. *TR
THE EXTERIOR PAINT ON THE DOOR HANDLES CAME OFF BOTH THE DRIVERS SIDE AND THE PASSENGER SIDE..THE METAL WRAPPING OF THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES BECAME DANGEROUSLY SHARP, AND CUT ME ON MY FINGER. THIS ALL HAPPENED AROUND 2009.SINCE THEN THE INTERIOR CLOTH HEADER HAS COME LOOSE FROM THE ROOF, AND IS NOW HANGING. *TR
THE DRIVERS DOOR HANDLE HAS A CHROME COVER ON IT, THAT AT ONE POINT WAS GLUED TIGHT TO THE HANDLE, BUT NOW DUE TO WEAR AND TEAR, THE EDGE OF THE PLASTIC CHROME PIECE IS EXPOSED AND IT YOUR NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND SLIDE YOUR HAND ACROSS IT WHEN OPENING THE DOOR, IT CAN RESULT IN A CUT.GASH IN SOMEONE'S HAND. (INJURY) I HAVE GOTTEN A FEW CUTS, NOTHING SERIOUS, BUT IF SOMEONE REALLY WAS IN A RUSH, IT COULD BE QUITE A DEEP CUT/GASH IN YOUR HAND. *TR
1)NO CHANGES OR EVENTS THAT LEAD TO THIS CONCERN. 2)HEADLIGHTS CONTINUE TO GO OUT. IT USUALLY STARTS WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE AND THEN ONTO THE DRIVERS SIDE. I HAVE TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHT BULBS EVERY MONTH IF NOT MORE. 3)THESE BULBS ARE PURCHASED BRAND NEW. DEALER STATES NO RECALL. I REPLACED THE BLOWN PASSENGER BULB ON A TUESDAY, IT BLEW OUT TWO DAYS LATER AND THEN THE DRIVERS SIDE BLEW OUT; WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF A ROAD TRIP LATE AT NIGHT! NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAD HAPPENED. SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE FRIENDS WHO ARE HAVING THE SAME OCCURRENCES. *TR
PAINT IS PEELING FROM EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLES OF MY 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA. *TR
I BOUGHT THE HYUNDAI SONATA 2005 GLE FROM COLONIAL HYUNDAI OF DOWNIGTWON PA. IT WAS A USED CAR WITH POWER TRAIN WARRANTY GIVEN BY THE DEALER. THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 73,000 MILES AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. SOON AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR THE AIRBAGS LIGHTS STARTED SHOWING UP. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND GOT IT FIXED, THEY CHARGED ME LABOR AND SCANNING FEES DESPITE IT NOT BEING MY FAULT AS THE CAR HAD NO IMPACT TO ANY OBJECT OR ACCIDENTS. WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF GETTING IT FIXED THE AIRBAGS LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING AGAIN, THE DEALERSHIP FIXED IT AGAIN. THE AIRBAGS LIGHT AGAIN CAME BACK AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME, I REPORTED IT TO HYUNDAI GLOBAL CUSTOMER SERVICE - THEIR RESPONSE WAS TO TAKE IT BACK AGAIN TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP AND ASK THEM TO FIX IT. I DID NOT TAKE IT BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP BECASUE I LACKED CONFIDENCE IN THEIR WORK HENCE I TOOK IT OUTSIDE CAR SERVICE CENTER WHERE THEY RAN THE SCAN BUT COULD NOT FIND ANY ISSUES WITH THE AIRBAGS BUT SAID ONLY HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP CAN RESET THE LIGHTS. I NOW MOVED TO NJ HENCE THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP NOW WANTS 90$ TO DO THE DIAGNOSIS AFTER WHICH THEY WILL GIVE ME AN ESTIMATE. I FEEL ITS UNNECESSARY WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY AND I HAVE ALREADY SPENT ENOUGH ON THIS ISSUE. I FEEL IT'S UNSAFE TO DRIVE THE CAR WITH THE AIRBAGS ISSUE. REQUESTING HELP IN THIS REGARD. *TR
2005 HYUNDAI SONATA - 20,700 MILES FAILED SAFETY INSPECTION DUE TO SEVERE BRAKE RUST. *TR
IN 2008 AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON, TOOK THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE. THE DEALER SAID THAT IT WAS CODE B1382 AND CHECKED THE CAR. IT WAS THE CONNECTION UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON AND OFF SINCE THAT DATE. THE LIGHT IS NOW ON AGAIN. IF IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHERE MY AIRBAGS ARE NOT GOING TO BE WORKING, AND SOMEONE GET INJURED IN MY VEHICLE, HYUNDAI WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR NOT HAVING A RECALL . IT IS UP TO THE NTSB TO FORCE HYUNDAI TO HAVE A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM. PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE IN DANGER SEEING THERE ARE SO MANY ISSUES. *TR

AFTER MANY INDICATIONS OF AIR BAG FAILURE (LIGHT ON) AND SEVERAL COSTLY REPAIRS - FINALLY FOUND A HYUNDAI DEALER THAT INDICATED THERE WAS A BULLETIN ON HOW TO MAKE THE PROPER REPAIR. REPAIR MADE AT 55,820 MILES ON 12/10/12 - NOW OVER 58,000 MILE AND NO REPEAT OF AIR BAG LIGHT (THIS IS A NEW RECORD TIME AND MILEAGE WITH THE AIR BAG LIGHT OUT) ERROR CODE THAT WAS CONSISTENTLY REPEATED = CODE B1382 QUOTE FROM THE E-MAIL FROM THE DEALER:: GOT SOME GOOD NEWS ON THE VEHICLE AND ITS NEEDS FOR THE SRS LIGHT. GOOD NEWS AS IT IS GOING TO BE EASILY REPAIRED AND COST NOTHING OUT OF POCKET FOR YOU. IT ISN??T GOING TO FALL UNDER ANY TYPE OF TRADITIONAL WARRANTY BUT WE WILL BE TAKING CARE OF THIS UNDER A GOODWILL WARRANTY. IT SEEMS LIKE THE CONNECTORS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPAIRED WERE REPAIRED INCORRECTLY. THERE IS A BULLETIN ON HOW TO REPAIR, SEAL, SECURE, AND RE ROUTE THE WIRING HARNESS SO THAT THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ANY FURTHER IN THE FUTURE. IT LOOKS LIKE THIS BULLETIN WAS NOT FOLLOWED AND THEREFORE WE HAD THE REPEAT FAILURE. *TR
PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS ON. TOOK IT TO AN AIRBAG SPECIALIST AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE SENSOR IS BAD AND THAT IT WOULD COST ME $1,600. I CANNOT GET AN ANSWER FROM HYUNDAI AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THIS IS UNDER WARRANTY. THE CAR IS A 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA. *TR
I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS NEW. MY WIFE PRIMARILY DRIVES THIS CAR AND THE PASSENGER SEAT MAYBE GETS USED ABOUT 10% OF THE TIME. THE VEHICLE NOW HAS JUST OVER 70K MILES. VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE HYUNDAI MULTIPLE TIMES DUE TO THE AIR BAG LIGHT COMING ON WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE PASSENGER SEAT. AT FIRST THEY TOLD US IT WAS DUE TO STUFF UNDER THE SEAT. THE NEXT TIME IT WAS A BAD MODULE @ $400 TO REPAIR. THIS TIME WAS DUE TO FAILURE OF STATE INSPECTION. PRIOR TO TAKING TO DEALER TO HAVE THE CODES READ, I DID RESEARCH ONLINE AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN RELATIVE TO THE AIR BAG CIRCUIT SENSOR WIRING THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE AT THE DEALER SEVERAL YEARS AGO BUT NEVER WAS. SO THIS TIME, ONCE AT THE DEALER THE CODES WERE READ AND INDICATED A HIGH RESISTANCE ON BOTH SEATS AND A DEFECTIVE PASSENGER SEAT BELT BUCKLE. I PAID TO HAVE THE SERVICE BULLETIN IMPLEMENTED AND REPLACEMENT OF THE PASSENGER SEAT BUCKLE. MY WIFE PICKED THE CAR UP BUT WITHIN A COUPLE MILES THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. SHE RETURNED TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THEM REPAIR IT AGAIN. NOW THERE IS A DIFFERENT CODE BEING READ FROM THE COMPUTER THAT INDICATES THAT THERE IS A SHORT ON THE PASSENGER AIR BAG, BUT THIS FAULT COMES AND GOES IF THERE IS MOVEMENT OF THE HARNESS IN THE VICINITY OF THE AIR BAG WITHIN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE DEALER CONTACTED HYUNDAI ENGINEERING CONCERNING THE NEWEST FAULT CODE AND THEY ARE IS NOW TELLING ME THAT HYUNDAI ENGINEERING IS STATING THAT TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM WILL REQUIRE THE SEAT TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $2200. THIS IS ABSURD. THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IS ONE OF THE KEY SAFETY SYSTEMS ON THE VEHICLE AND SHOULD BE ROBUST ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND MANY YEARS OF SERVICE. I HAVE HAD MANY CARS OVER THE LAST 40 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A CAR WITH SO MANY WIRING PROBLEMS LET ALONE AIR BAG ISSUES. *TR
THE 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS HAS SEVERAL PROBLEMS THAT SHOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY AND RECALLED, CLOSE TO THE 2006 RECALLS. WE OWN A COMPANY AND HAVE PURCHASED OVER 12 TO 14 HYUNDAIS. WE HAVE FOUND THAT THE SONATA GLS 2005 HAS PROBLEMS WITH THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT, SEATBELT RESTRAINT, THE FRONT TIRES ARE CLOSER TO THE BACK & NOT CENTERED ON THE WHEEL WELL (HAS BEEN THIS WAY SINCE PURCHASED, BUT THEY DO NOT CORRECT.), HAVE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS & THAT UNIBODY TYPE FRAME & SO ON. IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE A TRUCK LEFT THE TAIL GATE DOWN & A LADDER HIT THE WINDSHIELD, THE CAR WAS THEN PARKED, TURNED OFF , THE KEYS TAKING OUT OF THE IGNITION & THEN BEGAN LOOKING FOR THE CELL PHONE THEN PROCEEDED TO OPEN THE DOOR TO GET OUT INFER ALL THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED WHICH ALSO CAUSED THE FRONT DRIVER'S SEAT BELT TO LOCK UP & CAN NOT BE PULLED OUT TO WEAR. HYUNDAI STATES THAT THIS IS NOT WARRANTED EVEN THOUGH IT WAS DEPLOYED AFTER THE ACCIDENT OCCURED. HYUNDAI HAD A GREAT WARRANTY 10 YEARS AGO. THEY DO NOT STAND UP TO THEIR WARRANTY AS BEFORE & I HAVE FOUND THAT SOME OF THE WARRANTY HAS CHANGED. I HAVE SWITCHED TO TOYOTA. HYUNDAI HAS DONE NOTHING SO FAR TO CORRECT. *TR
AIR BAG LIGHT STARTED TO COME ON. I TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP. THEY TAPED A CONNECTOR UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT AND THE LIGHT WENT OUT THEY DID NOT TELL ME THE TROUBLE CODE. THEN ON 11/06/08 AIR BAG COMES ON AGAIN AT MILEAGE 56236. I TOOK IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP AND THE TROUBLE CODE WAS B1382 AND THEY AGAIN CLEANED CONNECTORS AND POSITIONED WIRING UNDER PASSENGER SEAT AND THE LIGHT WENT OUT. THEN IT CAME ON AGAIN AND WE DROVE IT APPROX 30000 MILES. ON 02/06/12 I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP (OTHER ONE CLOSED) AT 88705 MILES THEY FOUND TROUBLE CODE B 1382 AND FOUND BAD CONNECTION UNDER PASSENGER SEAT AGAIN. THEY REPAIRED CONNECTION AND LIGHT WENT OUT. ON 04/09/12 LIGHT IS BACK ON AS I WRITE THIS. WHY DOESN'T HYUNDAI GET THESE PROBLEMS TAKEN CARE OF? IT APPEARS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 05/06 SONATA'S, WHICH COST UPWARDS OF $1500 TO DIAGNOSE/REPAIR. ON DECEMBER 17, 2007 AT APPROX 5:30PM MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING WEST ON OSUNA AT INTERSECTION OF SEAGUILL , DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT OF 35 MPH, 35 BEING THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT. AS SHE PROCEEDED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION ON A GREEN LIGHT, A LATE MODEL FORD RANGER TRIED TO GO THROUGH THE INTERSECTION CROSSING HER PATH. AS SHE ADVANCED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION SHE STRUCK THE FORD RANGER BROAD SIDE. FORTUNATELY FOR MY DAUGHTER SHE HAD HER SEAT BELT ON, BECAUSE THE 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA'S AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THE HYUNDAI 'S AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOYING BECAUSE THE IMPACT WAS STRAIGHT AHEAD HIT, UNLESS THE HYUNDAI 'S AIR BAG WERE DEFECTIVE. MY DAUGHTER WAS NOT HURT BAD, ALTHOUGH SHE HAS BEEN HAVING NECK & BACK PAIN AND IS UNDER A DOCTOR'S SUPERVISION. I HAVE WRITTEN TO HYUNDAI., TO THIS DATE THEY HAVE BEEN VERY UNRESPONSIVE. THE LIGHT DID NOT COME BACK ON FOR OVER 10 MONTHS. THE CAR NOW HAS ABOUT 22 THOUSAND MILES AND THE DEALER HAS TRIED TO GET THE LIGHT TO GO OFF TWICE IN THE LAST MONTH. THE LAST TIME WAS ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO AND THE LIGHT STAYED OFF FOR TWO WEEKS AND NOW ITS BACK ON. THE DEALER KEPT THE CAR FOR A WEEK AND THE LIGHT ONLY STAYED OFF FOR TWO WEEKS! I PURCHASED A 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA NEW ON 2/18/05 AND THE DEALER, PAAR HYUNDAI IN BREMERTON. ON AUGUST 16, 2007, I HAD MY CAR MAINTENANCE AT THE DEALERS LOCATION IN BREMERTON. THEY SUGGESTED I PURCHASE NEW TIRES. I HAVE 46,000+ MILES ON THE CAR. I HAD A LOCAL TIRE DEALERSHIP, LES SCHWAB IN POULSBO, PUT NEW TIRES ON THE CAR. IN DOING SO, THREE OF THE SMALL HUBCAPS WERE DAMAGED. DESPITE BEING CAREFUL IN REINSTALLING THE HUBCAPS, SEVERAL OF THE PLASTIC RETAINERS BROKE OFF. LES SCHWAB WILL NOT PAY FOR THE DAMAGE, CLAIMING THAT THIS OFTEN HAPPENS WITH CERTAIN HYUNDAI AND NISSAN HUBCAPS. THE HYUNDAI DEALER WILL NOT PAY EITHER AND CLAIMS THEY HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM BEFORE. THIS IS DOUBTFUL. I RETAINED THE HUBCAPS. THE PLASTIC TABS THAT HOLD THE HUBCAPS ARE VERY WEEK, I CAN EASILY BREAK THEM OFF, AND THEY SHOW SIGNS OF WEAR AND TEAR AND FATIGUE. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE HUBCAPS ARE MANUFACTURED USING VERY POOR MATERIALS AND COULD COME LOOSE. EVEN THOUGH FAIRLY SMALL, A HUB CAP FLYING OFF A CAR AT 60-70 MILES PER HOUR COULD EASILY SMASH A WINDSHIELD OR KNOCK A CYCLIST OFF HIS/HER MOTOR CYCLE. *TR

IN THE SPRING OF 2007, I REPORTED THAT THE DEFLECTOR WAS VIBRATING AND THE DEALER CHECKED IT OUT. SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG. IN JULY 2007, WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY I 5 FROM OLYMPIA TO TACOMA, WA., THE DEFLECTOR SUDDENLY FLEW OFF. I WAS GOING ABOUT 65 MILES PER HOUR. IT WAS DARK AND I DID NOT SEE WHERE IT WENT. LUCKILY, IT DID NOT HIT ANYONE. HAD THAT HAPPENED, IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS DAMAGE TO ANY VEHICLE FOLLOWING OR PERHAPS KILLED SOMEONE. I REPORTED IT TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY CLAIMED A ROCK HIT MY CAR. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS TRUE. THE VIBRATIONS WERE GETTING WORSE AND I HAD DECIDED TO RETURN TO THE DEALER AND HAVE THE DEFLECTOR REMOVED. I WAITED TOO LONG, HOWEVER, AND THE DEFLECTOR FLEW OFF. THE DEFECTOR PART NUMBER IS 00239-F2000. MY CONCERN IS NOT FINANCIAL, SINCE MY LOSS WAS ONLY $66.13. WHAT DOES CONCERN ME IS THAT FUTURE FAILURES OF THE DEFLECTORS COULD CAUSE GREAT BODILY HARM AND PROPERTY DAMAGE. THE AUTO DEALER DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CONCERNED. *TR
AT APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES, THE REAR BRAKE DISINTEGRATED DUE TO DRAGGING AND I WAS INFORMED IT WAS MY DRIVING. ONLY ONE REAR BRAKE MALFUNCTIONED IN THIS WAY, HOWEVER ALL ROTORS HAD TO BE "TURNED DOWN" AND NEW BRAKES WERE INSTALLED ALL AROUND EVEN THOUGH ALL OTHER 3 PADS WERE LIKE NEW. AT 72,000 THE FRONT BRAKE DID THE EXACT SAME THING AND THE REAR BRAKE WAS CLOSE TO BEING DETRIMENTAL TO THE ROTOR. THE FRONT ROTORS COULD NOT BE "TURNED-DOWN" AGAIN, SO NEW ROTORS WERE APPLIED. THIS PARTICULAR MECHANIC, AT A WELL KNOW FACILITY INFORMED ME THAT HYUNDAI'S ARE NOTORIOUS FOR WEARING OUT BRAKES AND THEY SEE THIS CONTINUED PROBLEM. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THE HYUNDAI DEALER IS QUITE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. I AM NOW ON A "WATCH" AT THIS MECHANIC'S SHOP TO KEEP FROM HAVING YET ANOTHER BRAKE ISSUE. SOMETHING CAUSES THE BRAKES TO DRAG AND WEAR QUICKLY AND NOT ALWAYS THE SAME BRAKE. THE BRAKE PEDDLE, AFTER THE FIRST HYUNDAI SERVICE, WENT TO FLOOR AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THE SONATA IS DESIGNED FOR THE "OLDER" CUSTOMER WHOSE REACTION TIME IS SLOWER AND MORE UNSTEADY, THEREFORE THE BRAKING IS LONGER AND SOFTER. AFTER THE NEW MECHANIC ADJUSTED EVERYTHING, MY BRAKES ARE NORMAL. *TR

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE CRASHED AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE CONTACT TRIED TO AVOID AN ANIMAL IN THE ROAD AND CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE. THE POINT OF IMPACT WAS TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS NOT WEARING A SEAT BELT AND THE CONTACT'S HEAD BUSTED THE WINDSHIELD. ONLY MINOR INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THE POLICE WERE AT THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT AND FILED A WRITTEN REPORT. ADDITIONAL, PROPERTY DAMAGE WAS TO THE PARKED VEHICLE. UPDATED 5/10/2006 - *NM
