NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2013 Hyundai Sonata. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Vehicle was left in care of dealership service department after critical failure of engine. Determined that recall 162 was responsible and Hyundai would afford the repair. Vehicle at dealership for 5 months until repair could be scheduled. Repair complete, dealership advised us that the airbag light was illuminated. Technician performed "courtesy" diagnostic to read codes. Codes B1329 and B1331; front impact sensor and passenger communication error. Neither code is historic for the vehicle and only displayed after service from dealership.
after 5 months Hyundai does not have a remedy for NHTSA Recall Number 23V651000 which is an acknowledged fire hazard. What is NHTSA doing ro encourage Hyundai to move more quickly?
For over a year had to replace right brake light 3 times. Got an extended warranty letter, took to dealership they checked and ordered part needed, its on national backorder. Now my left brake light went out. So now I have no taillights, brake lights or turn signals. It is due to wire melting. I have almost been rear-ended numerous times now. No other transportation so I'm in need of this being taken care of asap.
We purchased this vehicle used in good condition. We have kept up the maintenance especially oil changes and all recalls. The car uses or burns shall I say a lot of oil between oil changes. It is showing no signs of leaks anywhere and I have had to add at least four quarts of oil so far and it isn't even time to change it yet. The check engine light came on. So, I am about to take it to the shop before it stops on me like I have read in the many complaints here.
The electrical has been an issue for this vehicle. The head and tail lights continuously go out. Sometimes they work, and other times they do not. Since the lights have been an issue, the electrical issue is also now inside the vehicle. The radio and other controls in the vehicle do not work any longer, as well as the lights in the radio, air conditioning, and other controls inside the vehicle. The steering wheel is also loose now and jiggles when driving the vehicle. There have been no warning lamps about these issues, and I had an auto shop confirm that there are electrical and steering issues. I did receive a letter about a recall for electrical for the year, type, and model of my car, however, the dealership said that my VIN number is not associated with the recall and will not fix the issues.
The engine seized up while my wife was driving on the freeway forcing her to pull over. There is a settlement about these engines indicating that they consume too much oil and Hyundai offered a lifetime warranty for them which we were denied because a previous owner didn’t take care of the oil changes it appears. I have fought with Hyundai to replace this engine simply due to the fact it’s a bad engine and countless millions of customers know this. I was advised that some customers have reached out to you to inspect and sometimes this forces Hyundai to do something. If we didn’t qualify for this replacement we shouldn’t have received a brochure and we shouldn’t be in trouble for somebody else’s actions. The vehicle shouldn’t have been sold to us in the first place.
I see that the recall notice was issued in September of 2023 but I have to say that for no recall remedy to be available yet is disheartening. I drive my car every day and it is the only car I have, because of that I risk my life everyday. My car loses power because of this recall daily and it ranges from 3-6 times a day. I lose power on the highway, the main roads and back roads, it does not matter the speed or time of day. I would like them to push out a fix now. Eventually I will end up in an accident because sadly I cannot afford to get into a new car or a used car.
Driver side brake lights keep melting the housing replaced at my cost the housing and bulb 2 times took to dealer no help went in at 202258 miles for service had a extended warranty which had expired at 200,000 dealer offered no help told me about cost of new housing I looked and found bad bulb replaced it for $6.00 insteaded of $300 plus dollars for housing dealer was no help with this problem safety problem with no brake light
While driving the car at freeway speeds it died and quit running, and the engine compartment began smoking, and a fire ensued under the hood. Gasoline could be smelled before it started fire.
The vehicle started making a very loud noise and shaking
submitting a formal complaint to NHTSA regarding unresolved safety defects in my 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Despite Safety Recall 251 issued in December 2023 for an ABS fire hazard, my vehicle continues to experience sudden loss of acceleration, engine shutdowns, and persistent dashboard warnings. Failed Recall Repairs & Lack of Transparency Since receiving the recall notice, my vehicle has been serviced multiple times at Thompson Hyundai in Dundalk, MD, yet the defects persist. When I requested service records to verify recall repairs, I was told that Thompson Hyundai’s acquisition by Heritage prevents them from providing full documentation—only three edited records missing key details. This raises concerns about: 1.Whether recall repairs are actually resolving safety defects. 2.Hyundai’s failure to maintain proper repair documentation. 3.The risk that other Hyundai vehicles remain unsafe due to incomplete recall fixes. Life-Threatening Breakdowns & Financial Hardship Since Hyundai’s supposed “fix,” my vehicle has broken down at least eight times, including major highways and intersections. On [XXX], on [XXX], my car suddenly lost power in heavy traffic, nearly causing a multi-vehicle accident. As a result: •I lost my job due to missed work from repeated breakdowns. •I suffered severe emotional distress, including PTSD-like symptoms and asthma attacks requiring medical attention. •I am facing financial instability from lost income and costly rental vehicles. Request for NHTSA Investigation Given Hyundai’s failure to resolve these defects, I urge NHTSA to: 1.Investigate whether Hyundai’s recall repairs fully resolve the defect. 2.Review dealerships’ recall documentation practices. 3.Determine if further regulatory action is needed to protect consumers. I am pursuing direct resolution with Hyundai but am bringing this to NHTSA in the interest of public safety. I appreciate your review and look forward to your response. Hyundai recall 23V651000 has no remedy after 4 months of the start of the recall.
Hyundai is taking too long to fix the Campaign 251 recall for the fire hazard associated with the ABS system. What can you do to speed up the solution and repairs?
Wires, reverse osmosis system unauthorized and unknown
The engine went into smoke and caught on fire. Resulting in damage to the vehicle ultimately causing to be totaled.
When I returned to my car on [XXX] after shopping I noticed that a crack had suddenly appeared in the passenger side of the dashboard above where the passenger side airbag is located. When I searched the internet to find repair options I discovered that Hyundai issued a recall in 2020 for 2011-2014 due to dashboard cracking and that the recall affected over 580,000 vehicles. I have searched the NHTSA website, but my vehicle is not included in this recall. I am contacting you to make you aware that there are other vehicles with the same problem that have not been included in the original recall. I am asking that you expand the recall to include all affected vehicles. Below is a link to the article I am citing. [XXX] Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Please contact me for any questions. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The car's engine has a loud rattling noise, the engine vibrates, the check engine flashes, and it lost much of its power . The characteristics of the Recall 162 which has already passed and was fine at that time.
Car smells like it’s burning, been told it’s oil. Dealership after seeing leakage on the engine replaced the valve gasket. Car still smells like it’s burning and apparently there is no leaking. I went to the same dealership to inform them and they recommended replacing a hose but not a guarantee it will fix the overall problem which is smelling of burning. I’m concerned! I’m 37weeks pregnant and don’t want to inhale burning or any other chemicals pre and post postpartum with a newborn
Seatbelt does not recoil
I was driving down the NYS Thruway in mid December and the check engine light started flashing. Before I could reach the next exit (maybe 3 minutes at most) the engine stopped accelerating and I had to make a choice to pull over on the side of the highway before I lost speed altogether. We had it towed back to our mechanic and it was a complete engine failure, without warning.
On [XXX], my brakes failed on my 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid on a busy interstate in Atlanta, GA. I had it towed to Ed Voyles Hyundai in Smyrna, GA and after "looking at it" they were not able to diagnose the issue. I informed them my brakes went out, they ran a diagnostic test and found where the message came across the dash, but stated it was fine and to bring it back if it happened again. On [XXX], it happened again. My brakes failed and the same alert was sounding off in my vehicle. I took it to Ed Voyles again and they were finally able to determine it was the ABS module on my vehicle. This was due to an electrical short in the brake system. I found out it is the same part as the recall. I emailed the service manager and he agreed. However, Hyundai Motor America will not allow them to remedy the issue because they haven't "come up with a remedy". The recall is listed as severe! Not only will it catch on fire, but the brakes also fail! There is a burning smell that comes from under my car and I am not sure how there is no remedy for a recall that could cost HMA way more than to replace some ABS modules. I don't feel safe driving my vehicle and I am not sure how to get more attention to this matter. It is immensely unsafe to allow millions of people to drive in a potential failing brake fire hazard. We were part of the Hyundai Theta claim group. Our car did stop in traffic, luckily my husband was alone, and no one was hurt. It was towed to the dealer. This was October2023. Dealer gave a list of fixes & stated it had nothing to do with theta. We had all recommended maintenance done; as we always do. Roughly 2 months later, Dec., with a full car, it did it again, at a stoplight. We are lucky to be alive. We had it towed to our mechanic. I contacted the Theta claims line. Our mechanic stated oil was still in the filter, but the pistons had blown clear through the engine, which he still has. Hyundai contacted him. He sent pictures. Hyundai denied my claim for timely filing. I have called weekly, followed every instruction. Now they want me to mail a letter. I am a disabled veteran. Look how many recalls they have. They don't mind recalling. They will just deny people. Please help.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35-65 MPH, the vehicle decelerated unintendedly. In addition, while turning the steering wheel to the left or the right, there was an abnormal clicking noise coming from the steering column. Most recently, while driving at unknown speeds, the brake pedal required excessive force to bring the vehicle to a stop. The contact stated that it was discovered that an unknown liquid was leaking underneath the front of the vehicle with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that all the drive belts had fractured, and there was a fracture in the oil line and the radiator. The brakes had failed due to the calipers sticking and failed choppers and readers. The mechanic recommended that the radiator, electronic steering bushing, front calipers, pads, and readers be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V312000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
Engine failure driving on the freeway. Many of the clusters in the dash suddenly lite up, check engine light also multiple warning lights.Suddenly vehicle would not accelerate. Feels like my life as well as my passengers were put at risk. Cars suddenly passing us at freeway speeds. As I pulled to the shoulder of cars were very close to hitting ours. Then when we pulled over we saw smoke coming out of the hood of the car and imediately smelled gas or plastic burning. We got out of vehicle thinking that the car might carch on fire.. The police pushed our car out the freeway to a safe zone. Had the car towed to a shop and confirmed engine failure. As of now the vehicle will not start. We are frightened that there may be a gas leak that might cause an explosion or engine may fail again while driving.
My vehicle was stolen on November 23rd, 2023. I am completing this form because the vehicle lacked the proper equipment to prevent theft which resulted in a wreck and the vehicle being totaled. -The Ignition was affected as it was stolen and the steering column was peeled. I do not have the car anymore as it was totaled. -The vehicle was easily accessible to be stolen. -Yes
This particular model had recalls for the steering washer for previous model years. The 2013 was never included. I have photos of how this washer looked before and after. RIDICULOUS!!! This year, make and model needs to have a recall! I know of others who have the same problem.
My husband and I were driving down i-65 near Montgomery Alabama on 11/17/2023 when all of the warning lights came on and the vehicle lost power. We immediately swerved into the emergency lane to avoid a major accident on a heavily traveled interstate. We arranged for a tow to a repair shop in Montgomery where they diagnosed the problem as an engine seize up. The engine has to be replaced, and the estimated cost was $7,074.81. I did an internet search and discovered others had had the same problem with other Sonatas. My husband contacted the dealership where we bought the car and asked if there was any special program for this type of failure. The service manager was polite, professional and diligent. She looked up the VIN number and confirmed that our vehicle had had all the required maintenance. She said there seemed to be an extended warranty program, but any repairs would have to be approved by the manufacturer. Such approvals could take as long as 60 days. We had the vehicle towed and am awaiting word on next steps. I'm grateful my we weren't killed in an accident on I-65, and the engine failure didn't cause injuries or death to others. The contact stated the local Hyundai Service Center claims they have a backlog and lack the personnel to perform the diagnostic and subsequent repair.
When driving to work the car stopped running in the middle of the highway. We had to pull off to the side of the road, turned off the car and when turning it back on the engine wouldn’t start. The EPS, low oil, check engine, battery, and low tire pressure lights were all on. I took the car to my mechanic and he said the engine seized due to the crankshaft breaking.
My 2013 Hyundai Sonata 2 recalls that Hyundai are refusing to fix. My engine has been consuming oil since 10/15/2023. 2-3 quartz oil has to be put in the car every 5 days. Some of the recalls were satisfied on 11/15/2023. I took my car South Shore Hyundai located at 360 Sunrise Hwy, Valley Stream, NY 11581 on 1/4/2024 They are refusing to replace the engine . my car was under warranty at the time of the recall. However, I never received a letter to notify me of the recall. Everything the recall states my engine has been doing. I reached out to the corporate office with no resolution. Hyundai says I have to be the original owner which is absurd. After careful research I see where they have replaced vehicles similar to this nature free of charge after consumers hired a lawyer, which I can't afford at the moment. My 23 year old daughter uses the car for work and I fear for her safety. I am replacing the fuel injectors and spark plugs today as suggested by the dealer. I am asking for help in getting the engine approval for replacement. Thank you.
The contact owned a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. The contact stated that while the wife was driving approximately 65 MPH, an abnormal engine noise was suddenly present coming from the engine compartment before the vehicle stalled. After parking on the side of the road and exiting the vehicle, moments later flames and smoke were present coming from the engine compartment and the fire department was called to the scene and extinguished the flames. The vehicle was deemed destroyed and towed away. A police report and fire report were taken at the scene. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the incident. The failure mileage was 125,000.
My airbag light came on mechanic said it's rc174 and tsb [XXX] is the # want to know if it's covered or if there's a recall on it would love a respond asap taking it to dealer in Honolulu on the 12 Dec. appt. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I was driving and the car slowed down in mid street on a busy road and started to stop then it sped up very fast then it slowed down again and sped up very fast again I had to drive all the way home 15 minutes without barley pressing the gas I went to AutoZone to get a code reader to see if what had happened would pop up on it and they said nothing but that incident was very strange because it has never happened before and it happened out of nowhere on a very busy street
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stopped, the engine stalled with several unknown warning lights illuminated. Upon restarting the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact called an independent mechanic to the residence. The mechanic arrived and informed the contact that the engine had failed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.
The left front brake caliper fell off and rubbed on the wheel’s rim. When I drove in reverse and hit the brakes the wheel would lock up and I couldn’t move. The dealer replaced the caliper. I had the brakes inspected by the local tire and brake specialists, Les Schwab. They wrote the inspection as the brakes locking bolt(the bolt that holds the caliper in place) was missing and the caliper was rubbing against the wheel. There wasn’t a warning. But, I did hear a loud clunk right before the brakes failed then the brakes made a rumbling sound as if I had a rock stuck in the brake pad. I asked the dealer to save the broken unit so I could document it but the service department manager for Korum Hyundai of Puyallup tried to pass off a different unit. I took pictures of both my unit (on the car) and the unit the manager was trying to pass off.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the front driver's side seat belt buckle assembly had failed and was unable to be buckled after several attempts. Additionally, the contact stated that the front passenger's side seat belt buckle assembly was inoperable. The contact stated that he was an independent mechanic and had determined that the front driver's side seat belt buckle assembly and the front passenger's side seat belt buckle assembly needed to be replaced. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
The back doors will no longer open when unlocked. This poses a safety risk. I was unable to get my child out of his car seat when the locks or locking mechanism went out. I had to climb into the back seat from the front. The door do not open either from the interior or exterior of the vehicle. A mechanic stated that this could be from faulty solenoids. I was unable to get a print out of a quote at the time of writing this
My vehicle has an engine safety recall and Hyundai is refusing to fix it. They are giving every excuse in order he book not to repair it. It is a dangerous safety issue. Thank you

2013 Sonata engine fire on 9/21/2023. Insurance totaled car Engine replace on 1/6/22I by dealership with reman sub engine 1) Engine aluminum flared gas line from engine fuel pump to cylinders was cracked and leaked gas. Gas line replaced 2/11/23 by another dealership. Progressive Insurance company inspected 2) engine caught fire 3) problem reproduced? Don't know 4) Progressive inspected car 5)Car was working great. No engine codes or problems. Gas smell was noticed few days prior to engine fire
When activating gas pedal, there is a rattling and grinding when in motion and then it subsides. When stopped at light or intersection, when giving gas again, the rattling and grinding resumes. Car seemed to be running a little louder than it's ever been since purchasing a few years ago. At no time has there been any dashboard lights or warnings prompting any problems with engine, low oil or anything else which is what the dealer service center is now telling me is an issue with engine needing to be replaced. Current issues have not been occuring very long which causes me to give the service center a call for an appointment in the first place. Vehicle was dropped off a week ago today, Friday, 9/22/2023, waiting for parts. Currently no work has been done to my vehicle and is sitting on the service center's lot. Was told it will take quite a while to get parts. I've had a rental since Monday of this week and I'm scheduled to return it this evening. Rental is and was expensive and I don't have a spare vehicle to get back and forth to work. Service center hasn't offered a loaner vehicle or suggested a rental company that will provide reasonable rates and collaboration with them. I just want my vehicle fixed and not have to repair cost that would be equal to me just getting another vehicle which is what the quoted cost to repair my vehicle is equivalent to.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Car continues to have inconsistent acceleration, hesitation, and sometimes lurches forward. On two occasions, the car felt like it was just going to turn off while driving. I was driving about 75 mph on I295 and driving about 15 mph on a residential road during the second occurrence. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I feel as though I am not in complete control of the acceleration but am mostly concerned with the car stopping on it's own. I am very scared I'm going to be hit by the car(s) behind me. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? I have an appointment in October for the car to be evaluated by a dealer. I hope it doesn't happen again before then. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The only time a warning lamp came on was during the second episode when the car felt like it was going to turn off; the engine light came on and immediately off.
The fix for campaign 251 recall is taking too long.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 35-40 MPH, the vehicle made an abnormal grinding and rattling sound and failed to respond while depressing the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving and the sound had become louder. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.
My 2013 Hyundai Sonata lost acceleration power while on the road requiring an emergency departure from the road and it fails to acceleration beyond. Placed vehicle in park and attempted to proceed home but was only able to drive 5 to 10 mph max creating a dangerous situation for my fellow commuters and myselt. After about a few block I let the vehicle cool down and attempted to proceed home. The car would only go up to 5 mph requiring me to avoid rear end collisions. Ultimately, requiring a tow vehicle to bring it home. Our neighbor indicated it is the MAP sensor which was changes with no improvement to the car's acceleration issues. Checked all the fluids and assured they were correct. This vehicle has place me and others in a dangerous and potentially fatal situations.
Coolant & engine oil is going somewhere. I have to check everyday to make sure coolant & oil is in. Check engine light started flashing & car jerking back. Diagnostic codes:P1326 & P2096
I was sitting at a red light for about 20-30 seconds before my vehicle accelerated itself into the vehicle in-front of me while my foot was still placed firmly on the break , causing major damage to my vehicle and some damage to the vehicle in-front of me. My vehicle had to be towed away
