Car began to knock and lacked acceleration. I took it to a dealer and spent $300 on replacement of plugs and it seemed to be working fine. One month later on the highway, the car completely lost power and would no longer accelerate. I found online that the engine had been recalled and the warranty extended to 120K miles. Hyundai paid for a tow to the dealership. The dealership determined that the engine needed to be replaced and thought Hyundai would replace the engine due to the recall, but the replacement was denied by Hyundai. I do not not know at this point on what grounds, but the car has 117,000 miles on it and should be within the extended warranty period because of the recall. The estimate for replacement of the engine is $8000. I've only had the car a few months and expected to get at least a few years out of this vehicle.
The contact's daughter owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact was informed by her daughter that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was shuddering significantly. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that there was oil leaking onto the spark plugs and causing the spark plugs to short circuit. The dealer replaced the park plugs several times; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times, where an oil consumption test was performed, and the dealer confirmed that the vehicle was experiencing excessive oil consumption. On Tuesday February 1st 2022, I was driving home from work on the interstate doing 70mph when my engine shut off. There was no warning lights ...nothing. By the grace of God I was able to pull over on the right shoulder without getting in an accident. That was TOTALLY unacceptable! Scared me to death! Come to find out the the engine blew! I babied this car which only had 104,000 miles. Hyundai knows about this problem and have done nothing to help compensate the owners of these . I have five kids and it is going to cost me 6,000 dollars for another engine. That cost includes labor as well. If you ever wanted to fight for the little guy, now is the time! Thank you in advance!
For no apparent reason and very little passenger usage the seat sensor for the passenger air bag is supposedly not working properly and if there is an accident the air bag may not deploy.
my 2016 Sonata SE vin #[XXX] has a engine recall, Hyundai gave me a lifetime Warranty of the engine and power train. the Sonata has 84577 miles on the engine and is using 1 QT of oil per 1,000 miles. took the car to Bentley Hyundai in Huntsville ,Al. for an oil change and to see what they will do about the oil issue. I'm to bring the car back to them in 1,000 miles for them to check out how much oil the car is using. I was told that even with the lifetime Warranty of the engine and power train that with the engine using a quart of oil that Hyundai won't do many thing to take care of the problem. If the engine was given a Lifetime warranty by Hyundai why won't they do any thing to correct the oil problem. Thanks [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The engine caught on fire while driving. Beginning back in June 2021, the CEL came on and placed the car into limp mode. Code P1326 was generated. Mileage at 91,220. Dealership confirmed engine bearing clearance test passed. Since then needed to add 1 to 1-1/2 quarts of oil every 1000 miles. Second CEL light came on in Nov 2021 and car went into limp mode. Code P1326 was generated again. Dealership confirmed engine bearing clearance test passed. Hyundai Corporate was contacted by the dealership to determine if engine can be changed out. It was declined. On 1/20/22, the car engine caught on fire with a likely total loss. No CEL was seen prior to this occurring. Approx. Mileage 100300
The engine light has come on and I have done extensive repairs on my vehicle since January 2022. No warning signs showed prior as I have kept up with maintenance on the car since the 60,000 mile marker. The valve gasket cover was replaced as the engine was smoking due to an oil leak. A pipe was repaired due to the leak. The engine camshaft position sensor was replaced. There is still issues with the engine after replacing the CVVT cover and plugs. The spark plugs have been replaced. If my car stalls or blows on the highway, this can cause a major accident putting myself and others at risk. I have done multiple tests with Hyundai dealerships and Firestone and AutoZone and no one can tell me what the ultimate issue is with the Sonata.
My cvvt is bad, the car is only 7 years old and has had on time oil changes. I bought the car from the dealership not even 2 years ago, on september 3, 2021. The cvvt is bad already. I do not speed, and I take good care of the car. There is no reason this part should have gone bad on so many cars this far. Please recall this item as it has gone bad on multiple vehicles, as well as my car constantly smells like it’s burning due to this issue.
My car is involved in the class action lawsuit because of engine failure and fire with my 2016 Hyandia Sonota. I have concerns with the above issue because of knocking in the engine and using 1 quart of oil every 400 miles. Hyandia extended the Power train settlement for life time. Yet, they denied to do anything about my car because or 98,700 milage. Dealer said only way Hyandia will do anything if the engine goes out. Hope it just goes out instead of catching fire. Need help, if you settle take care of the customer. Should take care of the customer before settling .

The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
Burns oil at an extraordinary rate. Takes about 1-2 quarts every week. No leaks, I’m unsure what the cause is for the oil burning so fast but it’s not leaking because I’ve gotten it checked for leaks and there is not oil stains or puddles when the vehicle is parked.
I was driving to work when my car stuttered then reduced power allowed me to pull to shoulder of the road at the same time my check hybrid system light came on with all others on dash. Car would not restart. Had it towed to the dealership where I’m told they will diagnose next week. I researched on several forums and this is quite a common issue with this model of car in various years. My car only has 61k miles and this is quite troublesome.
Left car parked at airport for 3 days came back car was fine for 2 days. On day 3 car went into limp mode and started knocking at the engine! Took it yo dealership and they said I was loosing oil. It was 2 weeks after a full oil change. They cleared the codes and refilled the oil! Drove 5 miles down the road, same thing! Changed throttle body, new spark plugs. New knock sensor and drove for 3 days after that and same issue came back!
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated upon accelerating from a complete stop at a traffic light, the vehicle stalled. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle, but the vehicle failed to restart and emitted an abnormal grinding sound. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the motor had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact was advised by the dealer that the failure was related to Hyundai Service Campaign Number: 953, regarding the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000.
I purchased my car used in December 2021 it is a 2016 with 97k miles. 2 weeks after I purchased the car I called to set up service because my cars engine was making horrible sounds. with me putting less than 900 miles on the car (it took 2 weeks to get it in for service) I had a in near perfect condition car with a blown engine. The car still runs and drives fine but it is using almost a qt of oil a week. The dealer is Autonation Hyundai of North Richland Hills, Tx knows the history that these engines are junk. But rather than be stuck with this issue they told me my valve covers were leaking and that was my issue. Keep in mind I have no oil leaking from anywhere and not a drop is on my car or on the ground. This car has an oil consumption problem along with thousands of other Hyundais and neither Autonation or Hyundai are willing to do anything about it because I am the second owner even though I bought the car in this condition from the dealer. The engine is failing because it is consuming oil. The engine is making noises and could at any time while driving could lock up and cause a dangerous situation on the roadways. This is a very well known issue and even a current class action lawsuit. The dealer is refusing to inspect the vehicle because I am the second owner and have no warranty. The only sign is low oil. The car is using oil at a rapid pace and I have to check and add oil weekly. This is a 5 year old car with 100k mikes on it.
I have been going to the dealership since July as my engine light was not shutting off. I kept being told that there were no loaner cars and that they could not fix the problems I was having kept putting a band aide on the issue and saying that I would have more problems. They told me the cat converter would need to be replaced but it was an engine recall issue. They had a loaner car for me for one day told me it was fine that it would probably go again I had them check the car again and they filled the oil and sent me on my way. Now I was on the side of the road with no car and am now being told they can’t work on my car until March which since I have been seeing them for 4 months now for the same problem that just got worse you would think they would try to help me. Instead they told me to go somewhere else turn in my dead car or I have to tow it and then tow it back in March. I can’t afford this right now it is terrible and there are no cars out there they are so expensive. Please help me I am very poor and have 2 jobs that require me to drive.
took my car to Hyundai at Tustin to check recall car worked fine dec 14 to 15th took my car drove it 4 days started hearing a whistle noise never herd it before then a small taping noise that kicked in when ac was on then when i drove it less then 10 miles the car started to stall and the engine light started flashing then i took it to car max due to having car max toeing plan they took the car now i been in limbo trying to get a diagnostic done on my car when it should of been done when i got my car in for the 1st time for the recall now im car less for 15+ days paying ubers that are 28 bucks a day to get to work when this could of been avoided if they check my car the 1st time and did what the recall commands to inspect the engine and replace it now im getting the run around telling me to check this Hyundai or this one for a appointment to diagnose your car instead of a hand to get me into a rental now i have to either pay CarMax 250 to diagnose the car and do nothing but get me a rental car or wait a other 19 days for jan 19 to get it looked at by Hyundai i spent so much hard earned money to just get nothin offered in terms of ride or assurance just oh it might not be covered cuase something with a 60000 mile warranty they do i was upset that they just talked over me and basicly said damm that suck deal with it its crazy cars shouldn't be this hard to diagnose and and send diagnostic to a other machinic they could use the carmax diagnostic as a refernce but they rather have a customer wait hence why after this car im going full electric this service to repair is a scam to get hard working Americans to shivvel out some more money help me and do a big investigation on this hyundai recall deportment somethings don't add up.
I purchased my '16 Sonata as a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle. It was 1 yr old, with roughly 36k mi on the odo. I bought it from Huntington Beach Hyundai, who showed me the Car Fax that it's CPO. They promised Hundai CPOs get what left on the 10 yr, 100k mi powertrain warranty. I've been doing oil changes per manufacturer recommendations since purchase. At roughly 40k to 60k on the odo, I noticed the car was burning a lot of engine oil. I brought my car to my local Hyundai service center, Tustin Hyundai, who told me 1 qt every 1k mi is normal. I thought it was a lot, but Tustin Hyundai told me there was nothing wrong with the car. Sometime after, I received mail about the Theta 2 engine recall to get the knock sensor install/update, and read about the risk of engine explosion/fire. I promptly got it done. Around this time, I read on Hyundai owner forums that excessive oil consumption is a precursor symptom to catastrophic engine failure. Sometime later, I noticed my car was burning a lot of oil, even more than before. I estimated at least 2 qts every 1k mi. I brought my car to Tustin Hyundai at roughly 75k mi on the odo. They started an oil consumption test, comprised of 3 oil level readings, each one every 1k mi. My car failed the first two. After the 2nd, my car stayed at Tustin Hyundai overnight to get a combustion chamber clean done. Tustin Hyundai told me doing so will solve the problem. Few months later, I noticed my engine was back to even more excessive oil consumption. I estimated at least 3~4 qts per 1k mi. I brought my car to Tustin Hyundai again, with roughly 80k mi on the odo. They said Hyundai corporate is rejecting all further service because my car isn't CPO, and that I ran out of powertrain warranty at 5 yr/60k mi. I called Huntington Beach Hyundai, who confirmed my car is CPO, and still has the 10/100 powertrain warranty. But Hyundai corporate, through 2~3 national case managers, told me I am out of powertrain warranty, and not covered.
The hybrid system shuts down while operating, gives warning "Check Hybrid System, Turn off Engine" This has happened twice. Both times the dealership cleared the codes and can't duplicate the issue at their facility. One time this happened while traveling approx 70mph causing the car to immediately decelerate which is a potential safety issue.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at an unknown speed, they would smell a burning odor and saw smoke exiting the hood. The contact stated they did not see any visible fire. The contact stated two weeks later, they received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V749000 (Exterior Lighting, Electrical System). The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The dealer stated the closest appointment would be on 2/28/2022. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.
Car unexpectedly stopped working and became disabled while trveling 40 - 50 mph on the freeway. Complete loss of power. Danger of a collision on the freeway. All dash lights and warning lights came on. Car would not shift and would not accelerate. It was unsafe to drive and could hardly move off the road. The first year I had the car the engine light came on and loss of power. I took it to the dealership immediately. Whenever I took the car to the dealer they said there were no codes and the car was was fine. The entire time I owned the car I would lose power on inclined roads and engine light would come on and off. Last week November 18 the car stalled and could not drive uphill again risk of a collision from the rear. I took the car to the dealer they said the car was fine. The dealership has never tried to fix the problem and claimed they could not duplicate the problem. Today 12/1/2021 the car stopped operating on the freeway completely and I had to tow it to the dealership. This car has been a safety hazard within the first year and Hyundai has done anything to address the problem.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V749000 (Exterior Lighting, Electrical System). The contact stated months later, the driver’s and passenger’s headlight fault warning lights were illuminated. The contact called local dealers; Freeman Hyundai (1800 Airport Fwy, Irving, TX 75062: (972) 438-2121), AutoNation Hyundai North Richland Hills (7724 NE Loop 820, North Richland Hills, TX 76180: (817) 953-6549) and Van Hyundai (1301 S Interstate 35E, Carrollton, TX 75006: (972) 437-8334) and was informed that the earliest available appointment would be in 8 weeks. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
My engine has catastrophic damage due to not being notified by the manufacture about a recall that occurred years ago. Had I known about the recall, I would’ve addressed it and prevented the engine failure. It is currently sitting at a Hyundai dealership as they are working with me to try to get Hyundai to cover the costs of the engine failure. So far, they refuse. My safety was put at risk due to the car stalling out on me at any given moment. I cannot and have not been able to safely drive this vehicle therefore, it has been sitting mostly unused as I continue to make payments on it over the last 6 months. This problem is a reoccurring issue with my vehicle and others and there is a class action lawsuit against Hyundai for it, in which I missed the deadline because I just recently became aware of this. The vehicle has been inspected by a dealer and was noted as “catastrophic engine damage” needing a $7,000 new engine. The engine light first turned on about 6 months ago for me, but I was in the process of moving across the country that same week, so I put repairs on hold until I was settled in to my new area. Now that I have the time, and after the car had been sitting for 6 months, I took the car in to a dealer where they told me the bad news. It is worth also mentioning that this is the 2nd time I’ve had damage done to my vehicle due to lack of recall notice. However, the 1st time my car was damaged, the dealer was able to fix the issue free of charge. This time around, they are needing to charge me $7,000 but are pushing that I get Hyundai to cover the costs due to the reoccurring issues with these recalled engines and their failures. I regularly maintained my vehicle and kept most of that documentation, so I know I did my part in taking care of my car. This is simply due to lack of recall notice that could’ve prevented a large bill for myself and my car being out of commission and unsafe to operate without probable cause of an engine fire. Please help
I was driving on the highway 11/30/2021 when my engine light came on and the vehicle was shaking uncontrollably and I couldn’t accelerate much. I pulled over and called a relative to trail me to a local Firestone. I assumed it was spark plugs but they tested it and it was a code p 304 cylinder 4 misfire. My car is currently at a mechanic shop named forest hill garage in Montgomery Alabama they called me 12/8/2021 and told me it’s a cylinder 4 misfire and it costs around $5,000 to fix and replace. He also stated there’s 7 other vehicles the same type of Hyundai up there with the same exact issue!!! Something is definitely wrong and needs to be recalled. I haven’t gotten the other documentation as of 12/08/2021 because I am at work

The contact followed up with the manufacturer and a case was opened. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,966.
I am constantly having my oil light flickering on and off. The engine oil consumption is super high. I take it for service on time, however before the next date it always needs to be added on earlier. When the light turns on, I drive it more slowly on the highway which can create cars around me to slow down as well. I have been spending more money to get this fixed but still having problems. It hasn't been inspected by the manufacturer but I have sent to an independent service center to get it checked and oil refilled.
2016 HYUNDAI SONATA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO PAINT PEELING OFF VEHICLE.
Please reference Hyundai Recall # 208 - Trunk Latch Release - Emergency Release May Fail. This recall covers 2017-2018 Hyundai Sonata. I have a 2016 Sonata with the exact same malfunction. Trunk does not open via any of the following: the remote key, the inside dashboard button, or inserting/turning the key manually. Additionally, I crawled into the trunk from the backseats to pull the emergency lever and that did not work either. Having a trunk that does not open from within the trunk is a potential danger. Hyundai tells me I am not covered by this recall, and I would like to have this revisited please. Many thanks !

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to another dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 119,345.
I recently totalled my car due to "following to closely" which I didn't have GAP insurance. Truth is I signaled to go right lane when The car in front thought inwas going left due to faulty recall problem and we both went right, I lost control and hit a rail and damaged car unfortunately
The report is wrong i never hit the suv from the back aldo both hits on vehicles or on my driver's side and his rare back passenger side. I never did my report since i was in the ambulance the hole time and nver said my part of the story i was in pain and went to sleep
When I was at work the engine gave up with no warning and could have gotten very dangerous for me. when I called the dealership they said because my car was totaled, but when I called NHTSA they told me that they didn’t have the remedies. I just thought that was strange. I need my car to work so if I can get a response as fast as possible that would be great.
Driving at approximately 75 mph smoke started pouring out of engine bay dash lights came on to check HEV system and all of a sudden vehicle became difficult to control more smoke then screeching and a message to turn off engine now appeared fought with steering wheel to get to shoulder and slow to a stop upon opening the hood belt to cam shaft pulley had snapped
Oil light came on when vehicle was almost out of oil. Engine could have seized Dealer says it is out of warranty because I am 2nd owner. 100,000 power train warrenty defaults to 60,000 for 2nd owner. Problem occurred just under 70,000. Warning oil light came on for the first time ever at 69,000 miles. Came on again after getting an oil change at 3,000 miles. Took 3 quarts to fill back to full. Engine now burns oil and must be refilled with nearly 2 quarts every 1000 miles.
Paint is peeling off car in several places, causing rust. Paint peeled in sheets from roof of car and hood. Paint is peeling off of side panels as well. Currently a class action lawsuit against Kia/Hyundai regarding improper curing of white pearl paint on models from 2014 to present. Dealership admitted to issue being replicated among same make/models of that color. No warnings were issued, however, company has settled several occasions by paying for repaint, thus admitting there is an extreme issue with improper curing of the paint.

Engine developed spontaneous loud knock and check engine light illuminated while driving at approximately 60mph. Could not continue driving and had to pull over on the side of a busy highway. Had to walk down the side of the busy highway to a safe area. Had vehicle towed to an independent repair shop, vehicle diagnosed with catastrophic engine failure due to failure of internal engine components. Repair shop stated this was a known problem with this particular vehicle and engine and manufacturer should be financially responsible for repairs.
Problem is the engine is burning two quarts of oil every 1,000 miles. Was taking car in for oil change and check engine light went on. Service person said car was way down on oil which is why engine light went on. Said there was a problem with Hyundai engines and to take it to dealer. Dealer Ettleson agent John Cunniff confirm that there is a problem with that engine and said they would run an oil test. Oil was changed with new filter and told to come back in 1,000 miles. Returned to dealer after 1,000 miles and engine was down two quarts of oil, dealer topped off oil and said someone would contact me. I called several days later and John Cunniff said that using two quarts of oil in 1,000 miles was within specs. He said to contact Hyundai customer service. I did with case # 19220125, and Frances was case worker. Attempted to contact Frances three times with negative results. I called and spoke with a Cindy who stated case notes stated Frances contacted Ettleson and they said two quarts of in 1,000 miles is normal, complaint was closed. Research disclosed there is a problem with oil consumption in that engine, backed up by their and other mechanics. I have 69,000 miles on the vehicle and a 100,000 mile warranty. I have all maintenance files for the vehicle since I purchased it. i have complied with the dealers instructions and have had my PCV replaced, and just keep adding oil to keep my engine running. Please advise my options.
