NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Hyundai Sonata. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata equip with Kumo Solus 215 55 R17 tires. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the front end of the vehicle would shake and vibrate. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who discovered the steel belt were exposed on the front driver side tire. The tire was replaced and the problem was remedied. The same failure had later occurred on the front passenger side tire. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 23,000. Tires are under warranty.
Since Aug 2021 I started to feel the steering is very tight. Even with a small move car steers very quickly. I have to hold the steering with both hands. Before that it was very easy to drive, even with one hand. Since then, every time when I went to Hyundai dealerships for regular maintenance I brought up about this. I was taking to Hyundai dealership in Kirkland, WA and Renton, WA. They checked and said that they don't feel it. I called Hyundai US and they assigned a case number and assigned a person to work with me. She suggested that I go back to the dearlership to ask them to inspect once again. When I went to the dearlership on March 27th, 2023, they said that the warranty has expired. When I called Hyundai US, she talked to the dearlership and now they are asking me to complete the 60K service mileage, including brake change before they can look at this issue. I am concerned about the safety. In many forums on the internet, I read that car steering jams right in the middle of the highways, leading to accidents.
Trunk latch
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V619000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages) however, the part to do the recall repair was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the trunk latch was fractured. The failure first occurred when the trunk would not open and the contact had to force it open. The trunk latch then fractured, and the trunk would not close on its own. The contact had to tie down the trunk door for it to close. The dealer was made aware of the recall but informed the contact that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that parts were not available and to take the vehicle to a dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
On two occasions my steering wheel locked up completely. Fortunately at the times I was only maneuvering my car at low speeds and I was able to stop the car in time. I was only able to regain steering after shutting off the engine and restarting. Both times the lockups occurred immediately following a “hard over” steering wherein the steering wheel was held against a stop. i.e.,the wheel could turn no further. After rebooting the startup, the steering returned to normal. I’m a little reluctant to try this maneuver again but I’m sure that the lockup could be repeated.
I have had my 2017 since July of 2017. Specifically, I have a petal white Hyundai Sonata sport. Over this past summer I started to notice that there was paint chipping on my roof directly above the passenger side window. It has progressively gotten worse. The paint is peeling off in sheets as I am driving down the high way. I explored my options on how I can go about fixing this and have notice that this is a country wide issue with this specific color and make of car. I have been compiling information because I am currently over the 36,000 warranty. I see similar cars in my neighborhood and we all have the same issue. Additionally, my dolphin antenna flew off while driving. Which could have caused damage to others around me. Prior to this, it was a bit lose. But again this is another issue that seems to be more common in this model and make of car.
The headlights and brake lights are constantly blowing and not working. Just recently my light bulbs were switch in august and the driver side will only work with the high beams on and my car is available upon request for inspection… I’m unable to see if i don’t have on the high beams and I’m pretty sure it’s blinding the other drivers. It haven’t been to the dealer since they were able to repair the brake light defects and there were no warning signs prior to the issue.
Important: This is hybrid vehicle. With the cruise control set to maintain a constant speed and while descending a long hill, the vehicle speed is maintained using dynamic braking by charging the battery. But if the grade is long - such as on CA 101 just north of San Luis Obispo, (locally referred to as the Questa Grade) there will come a time when the battery “gas gauge” reaches 100 % at which time the dynamic braking ceases and without warning the vehicle’s speed gradually increases and can reach excess speeds. If you are not paying attention to the speedometer the speed can become excessive in a hurry.
On numerous occasions, the steering wheel feels loose after starting but then begins to work normally. On 7/27/2021, as I was backing out of the driveway, there was excessive steering wheel motion where the wheels did not turn at all even though the steering wheel was turned in each direction about 10 degrees. Then the power steering completely stopped working at all, and I had to steer the car to the curb with extreme effort since the power assist was completely gone. Several dash warning lights were illuminated including the traction control light. After turning the car off, and then back on, the steering was back to normal. I have continued driving the car for the last three days and the problem has not recurred. But I am very nervous about the safety aspect of this and don't enjoy driving the car anymore. I am the original owner of the car and it only has about 28000 miles on it.
Power steering failure on 07/27/2021 as reported in complaint number 11427000. It took until 08/24/2021 to have the vehicle checked at Ricart Automotive in Columbus Ohio. The problem could not be duplicated at the dealer and no error codes were found. The car is not considered safe to drive by the owner, since I do not know when or under what conditions the power steering will malfunction again. 28000 miles, original owner.
* Taillights (Brake lights) * Bulbs are burning out continuously and I am afraid is going to cause a fire since they get so hot. I have replaced them on both sides at least 10 times over the last year * No * No
On a dark or dimly lit road the low beam headlights create a sharp boundary looking through the windshield with headlight illumination on the lower area and darkness on two thirds down from the top of the viewing area. It is as if the windshield has a line horizontally across it two thirds down in the field of view. The line bounces when the car bounces and dark upper portion can not be properly viewed through to see the road ahead. It is a safety issue due to poor visibility. The dealer has said a few times there is no issue and no reported issue. All they could do was adjust the headlights an inch. It didn't help. I don't drive it at night unless I have no choice and only very short distance. It got much worse recently. I won't sell this car to anyone, its not safe.
Trunk latch failed. Trunk would not open, even when used emergency trunk release. Eventually, latch broke and trunk would not close. Two potential safety issues: 1. Emergency trunk release would not work, negating ability for someone trapped in trunk to open it; 2. Exhaust fumes entering cabin through open trunk.
its been recalled and check engine light on since July 2021. The Hyundai is not addressing it properly and behaving very irresponsible when i spoke to their customer service. They assign the case manager and he never called or contacted me through email. Also their appointment availability is 30+ days and they will diagnose only after 7 days after the appointment. Till then no loaner or any sort of arrangements to the owners. Moreover the vehicle is very much under warranty. I am able see the following problems 1. Check engine light 2. Engine vibration and noise - sometime 3. reduced engine power 4. sometime burning smell Campaign #NHTSA Recall #DescriptionSafety RiskRemedyStatusCampaign Date Recall 208 2017-2018 SONATA (LF), 2016-2018 SONATA HYBRID, 2016-2017 AZERA, 2018-2020 ACCENT, 2017-2018 SONATA PLUG-IN HYBRID TRUNK LATCH ASSEMBLY Recall IncompleteAug 11, 2021 Recall 209 2017 SONATA HYBRID (LF HEV) & 2017 TUCSON 2.0L NU ENGINE Recall IncompleteSep 22, 2021
My engine is consuming oil at a high rate of more than a quart per 1000 miles. I went 3k between oil changes had 2 quarts added at about 1500 miles and was still low at the end of the 3k. Hyundai claims this is normal. I had previously completed the oil consumption test and Hyundai claims there is no issue. The oil pressure light started going on around July of 2021. Between the oil consumption tests and then additional driving it is 18 months later and not resolved.
I went to my dealer today and they reported that My car in fact did not have a safety recall set for my car. therefore there were no repairs to list or update..I attached the supporting document that my dealership printed out for me today..
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that as she attempted to place her groceries into her vehicle, the trunk failed to open as needed. The contact was finally able to open the trunk; however, the trunk failed to shut with the trunk warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle an independent mechanic who was able to make a temporary repair to the trunk latch. The contact then received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V619000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages) however, upon speaking with the manufacturer, the contact was notified that the parts were not yet available. The contact also mentioned that the passenger’s side air bag was exposed; however, no airbag warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. Parts distribution disconnect.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was restarted, and the power steering functionality was restored. The contact stated that the traction control and power steering warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the trunk failed to open with the key fob or while depressing the trunk release button inside the vehicle. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to their location to be repaired under warranty. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised the contact that she would be responsible for the cost of the diagnostic test and the repair because the vehicle was out of warranty. The contact received a recall for NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V619000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.
Manufacturer Recall Number 209 NHTSA Recall Number 21V727000 Incident date: June 15, 2021 While driving on the freeway at approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light flashing on the instrument panel, oil could be seen spraying out the back of the car onto traffic which put other drivers/vehicles at risk of an accident. We pulled over into a dirt parking lot, noticed a puddle of oil underneath the car, and then lifted the hood to see oil sprayed all over the engine compartment. I had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer where it remains in their possession as of today which in my opinion is too long to wait without a car, 6 months later from the incident. The manufacturer was notified of the failure June 16th and they informed me that the vehicle did not qualify for any recalls or warranty programs. The vehicle VIN later showed up on the recall campaign in September. Hyundai USA offered to replace the engine at no cost which I am thankful for that so far. However, after the engine replacement, I was told the car would not start, and will require a new battery module and hybrid battery, and that I must pay 40% of the parts and labor at $2776. I believe these parts suddenly failing are directly related to the engine failure incident, and should be part of the recall campaign. My car has yet to be repaired due to backordered parts. I've submitted rental car fee receipts of over $3500 to date without reimbursement because I'm told that it is their policy to only review rental receipts for reimbursement after the repair ticket is closed, with no possibility of interim reimbursement. The Hyundai case manager has told me there is nothing more that they can do, not willing to discuss with another department or Manager, no escalation path forward, and that all I can do is file this complaint with the NHTSA per the recall campaign notification.
Was driving on a busy road. Turned the corner and went to accelerate and once I hit 45 my steering locked up, couldn't turn or adjust my vehicle at all. I had my 3 kids in the car and was lucky we could get to the side of the road. Shut off the car and started it up and seemed fine. Then later that day i was driving on highway going 65 and my steering locked up and I couldn't drive. Lucky it was early morning and no traffic because I was able to get to the side of the road. This needs to be recalled before someone loses their life!
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while merging onto a highway at 50 MPH, the vehicle independently decelerated to 30 MPH and shifted into limp mode. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had initially taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The contact then had the vehicle towed to a dealer where he was informed that the failure was linked to a software update. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 56,000.
While driving the engine light comes on and blinks rapidly and the car drops from the speed of 65 to 15 or below in second. The code was p1326 with is the knock senor. I changed it and the code went away. Weeks later the code returned while driving again with me and my 3 little babies in the car again. Same issue engine light came on blinking speed drop rapidly. Read this is an occurring issue with this car and it must be taken in to the dealer for fixing.Dealer refused to check out the issue.
I had just left my house and was just a few miles down the road turning onto the main highway. The steering wheel jerked and then The steering wheel locked up like it had no power steering and I could not turn the wheel. Three lights came on on the dashboard, an exclamation point, a steering wheel and the traction lights all came on. It was a sunny day and there was no rain the pavement was not slick. I had to pull over on the side of the road and let my husband drive my vehicle. We had to take it in to the dealership and they said it was a sensor in the steering column and the entire steering column would have to be replaced at a cost if $2000.00. This is not a driver error this is a manufacturer error and it is not covered under any warranty. My car only has 67,500 miles on it and this should be recalled for the 2017 Hyundai Sonata‘s. After researching online about steering issues with the Hyundai Sonata’s I discovered that the 2015 Hyundai sonata’s have been recalled for the steering and so have the Hyundai ELANTRA’s. I called the Hyundai corporation and they said that there had to be a class action lawsuit for the 2017 models to get a recall. This could have been extremely dangerous had I been on a busier street. Hyundai needs to step up and recall this.
I had just left my house and had stopped to turn on main road. My steering wheel jerked a little and then when I went to turn it was extremely hard to turn. I pulled over to let my husband try and he had a hard time. The steering wheel light and an exclamation point came on and the traction lights came on but it was not even raining. We took the car to the dealership and they said it was a sensor in the steering column. It would cost $2000.00 to repair it. My car only has 67500 miles on it. They said the 100000 mile power/Tran warranty does not cover the steering column... I search online about steering issues with the Sonata and it seems very common. The 2015 models have a recall fir this issue. Had I been on a very busy street this could have been extremely dangerous because I could not control the steering of my car at all. I called the Hyundai Corporation and they said sorry there has to be a class action lawsuit with hundreds of names for a recall to be issued. They said to keep my records and if the model is recalled then they will reimburse me. We are in a pandemic and I don’t have the extra 2000 lying around to spend on a manufacturing safety error.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the vehicle consumed an abnormal amount of engine oil. The contact stated that the RPM was fluctuating without warning. The contact stated that the oil level and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed but not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 79,946.
MY STEERING KEEPS LOCKING UP WHILE I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I HAVE TO STOP MY CAR, PUT IT IN PARK AND TURN MY CAR OFF. THEN RESTART MY CAR IN ORDER FOR IT TO UNLOCK. I HAVE ALMOST CAUSE SOME WRECKS. MY CAR IS NOT THAT OLD TO BE HAVING THIS ISSUE. WHEN I WENT ON YOUTUBE TO SEE WHAT I CAN DO TO FIX IT, I FOUND OUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM.
AS I WAS BACKING INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP, I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL IN EITHER DIRECTION AND THE STEERING WHEEL LIGHT WITH THE EXCLAMATION MARK CAME ON.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that she would frequently add engine oil every 1,000 miles due to an excessive oil consumption. The contact also stated that the vehicle stalled while at a red light as the oil warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer and she was informed that the oil needed to be changed more frequently to prevent further failures. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.
THE THEA-ENGINE IS BAD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. AFTER DIAGNOSTICS DETERMINED THE ENGINE INDEED NEEDS TO BE REPLACED; THEY ADDED THE RODS AND BEARINGS DID NOT CAUSE ISSUE SO THEY WILL NOT COVER COST. THE BIG LIE IS THAT THE, "RODS AND BEARINGS WAS NOT PART OF THE ORIGINAL EVALUATION DIAGNOSTICS DONE ON THE ENGINE. IT WAS ADDED TO REMOVE THE CONNECTION THAT CAUSE PRIOR RECALLS. IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM AND MILLIONS OF UNSUSPECTING AUTO PURCHASERS SHOULD BE MADE AWARE. THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN MAKING CARS SINCE 2011 WITH FAULTY ENGINES, "STAY AWAY" THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE ENGINE MUST BE REPLACED
HAD OPEN RECALL ,, AN ECM UPDATE AND WILE HYUNDAI IN COLUMBIA CT. AND AFTER IT WAS DONE THE CAR WORKED FINE FOR ABOUT A WEEK , NOW I'M LACKING ACCELERATION FOR MILES PER GALLON HAS DECREASED 50% BURNING GAS QUICKLY PLUS IS BURNING ABOUT A QUART OF OIL A WEEK, BUT THERE'S NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, CHANGE THE SPARK PLUGS AND AIR FILTER STILL THE POWER HAS DECREASED 30%. I NOTICED THAT DECREASE IN POWER WHEN ENTERING ON TO A HIGHWAY AND I TRIED TO ACCELERATE INTO TRAFFIC BUT IT DID NOT HAVE ANY POWER AT FIRST UNTIL IT STARTED BUCKING AND THEN IT'S FINALLY GETTING SOME MOMENTUM. THE SPARK PLUGS WERE CHANGED BUT THE PROBLEM STILL PERSIST! STILL AT THIS TIME THE PROBLEM IS UNKNOWN TO ME
THIS MORNING WHILE LEAVING FOR WORK ON A CITY STREET, MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED, AND THE STEERING INDICATOR LIGHT ALONG WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON. AT THE TIME, I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, AND I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF TURNING. AFTER REVIEWING SIMILAR INSTANCES ONLINE, IT IS APPARENT THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, AND COULD BE DEADLY. IT'S UNACCEPTABLE THAT A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED. I CALLED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND WAS ADVISED THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY MY ONLY OPTION IS TO BRING IT TO THE DEALER AND PAY FOR AN INSPECTION AND REPAIRS MYSELF. THIS IS A MANUFACTURES SAFETY ISSUE, AND IT NEEDS A RECALL. I CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT I CAN BRING THE CAR IN AND PAY FOR AN INSPECTION, BUT THEY WOULD PROBABLY NEED TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. WHY HAS NOTHING BEEN DONE ABOUT THIS?? IS HYUNDAI WAITING FOR PEOPLE TO BE SEVERELY INJURED OR EVEN KILLED?
When driving the vehicle, the power steering stops working causing the steering to become very difficult to operate. It has created very hazardous situations. I’m very nervous when driving the vehicle due to the seriousness of the situation.
MY USES UP A LOT OF OIL, I HAVE TO PUT IN OIL A LOT AN NOW THE ENGINE IN MY CAR IS GONE IT MAKES A WEIRD NOISE IN THE ENGINE, CAN'T SPEED UP AN THE ENGINE IS KNOCKING. I WAS TOLD THAT ONE OF THE PISTONS IN MY CAR IS MESSED UP BECAUSE THE CAR BURNS SO MUCH OIL AN IT WAS HEATED UP AN NOW A PISTON IS MESSED AN ITS HITTING AGAINST THE INSIDE OF THE MOTOR AN MY MOTOR HAS INTERNAL DAMAGE AN IF IT DIDN'T BREAK DOWN ON THE INTERSTATE ALREADY IT WOULD OF BEEN WORST SO. I'M OUT OF A CAR AN I NEED MY TO MAKE MONEY SO
I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE FROM A USED CAR LOT. I KEEP ALL MAINTENANCE UP ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE I WORK AS A LUBE MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN. I NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE BURNS OIL AT A VERY FAST RATE. NOT EVEN 2000 MILES INTO MY MAINTENANCE INTERVAL THE ENGINE IS DRY. THE OIL LAMP TURNS ON. THERE IS NO LEAKS FROM THE ENGINE. I KNEW THIS WAS GONNA BE A PROBLEM TO FIX AND I KNEW IT WOULD BE VERY EXPENSIVE. I JUST BASICALLY CHANGED MY OIL MORE OFTEN. I WAS DRIVING IT FROM WORK AND THEN IT SUDDENLY STARTED IDLING ROUGH AND IT STARTED STUTTERING REAL BAD. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AND THEY TOLD ME A CYLINDER IS BLOWN AND IT COULD POSSIBLY NEED A NEW ENGINE. I'VE ONLY HAD THIS CAR FOR 2 YEARS!! AND I'M DEALING WITH HAVING TO REPLACE AND ENGINE ON A 2017 HYUNDAI SONATA I HAVE KEPT VERY WELL MAINTAINED. THIS CAR HAS ONLY TRAVELED IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA. THIS PROBLEM STARTED IN YORBA LINDA CALIFORNIA. MY VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY IN SHOP NOT EVEN TOUCHED YET BECAUSE I WANT TO KNOW IF THERE IS POSSIBLE A RECALL ON THIS ENGINE.
I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW IN 2017. SINCE APPROXIMATELY 3000 MILES, OIL CONSUMPTION HAS PROGRESSED FROM 1 QUART PER OIL CHANGE TO 3 QUARTS PER OIL CHANGE (VEHICLE HAS AROUND 92K MILES). OIL IS CHANGED EVERY 7K MILES WITH THE RECOMMENDED OIL VISCOSITY AND TYPE (SYNTHETIC) ALONG WITH THE FACTORY OIL FILTER CHANGE. NO NOTED LEAKS OR SMOKING, BUT THERE IS VALVE TRAIN NOISE WHEN THE OIL LEVEL IS 1 QUART LOW OR LOWER.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel locked, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer reset the steering sensor however, the steering wheel felt loose. Additionally, the steering wheel inadvertently moved to the right and was stiff while making left turns. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and diagnosed with rack and pinion failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but denied the claim since the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.
PAINT IS PEELING OFF IN LARGE SHEETS ABOVE FRONT WINDSHIELD. IT HAPPENED DURING HIGHWAY TRAVEL AT SPEED OF 65-70 MPH. NO DENTS OR SCRATCHES WERE VISIBLE PRIOR TO PEELING PAINT. THIS WILL COMPROMISE THE INTEGRITY OF THE BODY OF THE CAR DUE TO RUST AND CORROSION.
Last year in March 2021 I have a problem with the oil and the engine. The oil is burning internal and the engine wouldn't go pass 60 miles. This was reported the McGrath City Hyundai in chicago. A whole year they had me to bring my car in to them saying that hyundai need pictures and other stuff. I was told to keep driving my car 1000 miles and that did no good at all. Every since then my oil light been coming on and off. Now my engine light has pop on on today April 17, 2022. I was told by the Manger at McGrath City Hyundai that I was decline for a engine. I have been getting my oil change with them for the longest . I feel discriminated against because I am a female and they had me bring my car back and forward up there to keep topping off the oil in the car and know there is a problem with the engine, they kept my car for two weeks and didntgive me a rental and the car is still doing the same thing loosing oil there was a recall on Hyundai Engine it's been all in the papers and on the news they also sent out recall letters and they are refusing to replace my engine
The 2017 hyundai Sonata didnt even go up to 60 miles ,the oil keep going out the vehicle but not leaking on the ground, the passenger seat in the front the nails, screws has came out on it's on, there was a recall on the engine ,ENGINE LIGHT POP ON FLASHING,OIL LIGHT KEEP FLASHING ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING THE VECHILE scare for my safety
AFTER TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACE IN DECEMBER 2020, NOTICED STARTING IN JAN 2021, THAT VEHICLE DID NOT STAY IN PARK AND ROLLED BACK UP TO 5 FEET FROM WHERE PARKED. PICTURES FROM PARKING LOT, 3/6/2021 ROLLED BACK 5 FEET FROM WHERE IT PARKED. MILEAGE ON 3/6/21 WAS 96858. ON 4/15/21 WE HAVE VIDEO WITH THE NOISE THAT IT IS MAKING WHEN IN PARK AND ROLLS BACK (UNABLE TO ATTACH HERE). MILEAGE ON 4/15/2021 WAS 97881. CAR WAS PARKED IN A HANDICAP SPOT AT A RESTAURANT. THE AMOUNT OF ROLLBACK COULD CAUSE SOMEONE WALKING BEHIND THE VEHICLE TO BE CRUSHED OR KILLED. THE CONSUMER STATED THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, NOT ONLY ON AN INCLINE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE FAILURE; THERFORE, THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE.
AS I WAS DRIVING YESTERDAY. A STEERING WHEEL LIGHT WHICH AN EXPLANATION POINT NEXT TO IT POPPED UP AND THEN AS SOON AS IT DID MY STEERING WHEEL GOT HARD AND WOULD NOT TURN. THANKFULLY I WAS ON A SMALL ROAD AND ABLE TO DRIVE OFF TO THE SIDE SAFELY OR ELSE WHO KNOWS I COULD OF BEEN ON A BRIDGE AND FLEW OFF DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AT ALL! I WOULD HOPE THIS COULD BE FIXED AS A RECALL SEEMING AS IT HAS HAPPENED TO MANY PEOPLE.
MY 2017 SONATA HAS STALLED WHILE IDLING IN DRIVE. THE CAR COMPLETELY STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT; RPMS DROPPED AND IT STOPPED. PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING, I HAD COMPLAINED TO MY LOCAL DEALER THAT WHEN IDLING, IT HAS DROPPED IN RPMS AND FELT LIKE IT WANTED TO CUT OFF BUT DID NOT...UNTIL TODAY. AT THAT VISIT, I HAD THE FUEL SYSTEM SERVICED, AS THEY THOUGHT THAT MAYBE THIS WOULD HELP. THAT WAS APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS AGO AND NOW IT HAS COMPLETELY STOPPED AT A LIGHT. I AM TAKING THE CAR BACK IN AS I AM NOT CERTAIN WHAT ELSE IT COULD BE...MAYBE MASS FLOW SENSOR? I HAVE SEEN WHERE THE 2018 SONATA HAD A RECALL REGARDING HESITATION/STALLING ISSUES AND NOW I AM WONDERING IF THE 2017 HAS ISSUES AS WELL. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AS NOW IT MAY CUT OFF ON ME AND NOT START UP AGAIN.
I WAS DRIVING AND MY STEERING WHEEL RANDOMNLY LOCKS UP. PULLING MY CAR IN DIFFERENT LANES. I READ SO MANY OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS. Y'ALL NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.*DT
The power steering on 2017 Hyundai Sonata's will randomly stop working while I am driving. It started as an every month occurrence and now has become more than weekly occurrence. The steering locks up and two light indicators illuminate on the dashboard. These two lights are not on prior to the random power steering failure. My family's safety is at risk every time this occurs as are those on the road near my vehicle. I purchased this vehicle from my 88 year old grandmother. This extreme safety problem would have killed her had it happened when she was driving. I have taken the vehicle to a local dealership who seemed to be aware of the notorious problem on 2017 Sonata's but they explained that they are unable to reproduce the failure in their shop, so they are unable to fix the problem.
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that he would frequently replenish the engine oil due to rapid oil consumption. The failure worsened over time and oil needed to be added more frequently. The contact then took the vehicle to a dealer where he was informed that an oil consumption test needed to be performed. After the oil consumption test was performed, the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact was then informed that the dealer had placed an application to the manufacturer to have the engine replaced; however, the application was declined, and he was informed that the vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN USED CONDITION BACK IN JUNE 2019 WITH APPROXIMATELY 82,000 MILES ON IT. IT CURRENTLY HAS 125,000 MILES ON IT AND ONLY RECENTLY HAVE I BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE. I CHANGE THE OIL ON THIS CAR EVERY 5,000 MILES OR SO SINCE I DO PLENTY OF COMMUTING FOR WORK. THE LAST TIME I TOOK MY CAR TO GET THE OIL CHANGED BEFORE I NOTICED THE PROBLEM WAS IN DECEMBER 2020. I NEVER BOTHERED TO CHECK THE OIL BECAUSE I HAD COMPLETE CONFIDENCE THAT THE OIL WAS TOPPED OFF AT EVERY OIL CHANGE. HOWEVER, I STARTED NOTICING THAT THE CAR FELT FORCED WHENEVER I TRIED TO ACCELERATE. I ALSO STARTED NOTICING A SUBTLE RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD WHENEVER I WOULD TRY TO ACCELERATE. I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK MY CAR IN JANUARY 2021 WHEN HE CHECKED THE OIL LEVELS AND POINTED OUT THAT THERE WAS NOTHING ON THE DIPSTICK. WHAT IS EVEN STRANGER IS THAT NO DASHBOARD LIGHT HAD COME ON. I HAD DRIVEN THE CAR APPROXIMATELY 2,500 SINCE THE THE OIL CHANGE IN DECEMBER AND IT WAS ALREADY EMPTY. I CHECKED UNDER THE CAR WHERE I PARK BOTH AT HOME AND AT WORK AND THERE ARE NO OIL SPILLS ON THE GROUND. I'VE READ SEVERAL FORUMS WHERE PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME ISSUE WITH OLDER MODELS OF THIS CAR AND THERE ARE RECALLS FOR THOSE MODELS. HOWEVER, I'VE ALSO COME ACROSS FORUMS WHERE PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE WITH NEWER MODELS SUCH AS MINE. I WILL BE TAKING THIS CAR TO A HYUNDAI DEALER TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE. BUT AT THIS POINT, I HAVE TO ADD ABOUT QUART OF OIL EVERY JUST TO KEEP IT FULL AND TO PREVENT THE ENGINE FROM SEIZING WHILE I AM DRIVING. THIS IS A HUGE CONCERN.
PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AT 46000 MILES. EVER SINCE IT REACHED 60000 MILES I HAVE BEEN GETTING OIL CHANGES SOONER. I USED TO CHANGE OIL EVERY 3500 MILES, BUT NOW I NOTICE THE LOW OIL LEVEL LIGHT AFTER ONLY 2000 MILES AND SOMETIMES LESS. IT USUALLY COMES UP WHEN I PRESS MY BRAKES.
Engine oil found to be low at multiple oil changes. So started checking levels 1000 miles after oil change and found oil to be low already at that point. The last check, only 1300 miles after oil change, found vehicle to be down 1.5 quarts. Available for inspection upon request. Because we are checking and replacing the missing oil at the early timeframes of 1000 miles instead of at 7500 miles, no one is in immediate danger (beyond my bank account). The service center has been monitoring the issue for some time. They checked seals, gaskets, and replaced them to be sure they were not the issue. The oil levels still decrease. Upon speaking to a Hyundai rep, he (the manufacturer) claims there is no issue but I should get a diagnostic check up at dealer. I am scheduling one this week. Issues with the local dealer is they charge too much, suggest repairs that are not necessary, and have extended service wait times of at least 3 hours even though I have an appointment. There have been no warning lamps, messages, or actual failures. I am trying to prevent reaching that stage. I do know that my engine is the same one they recalled from earlier models. Those engines were having high oil consumption issues which help lead to more serious safety issues with time. I am wondering how the same engine, with apparently the same issues, was allowed to continue to be used.
