I just bought a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the VIN number listed above. I saw that there was a recall where the dealer had to put on trailer hitches on the vehicle as without it if rear ended the gas tank could explode. I understand this is a older vehicle but do they not service recalls anymore for something like that??? It could explode it hit in the back. When I put my VIN in it says no outstanding recalls yet it does not or ever had a hitch on it for this repair. Any info on this is appreciated....Thanks

THE CONTACT CALLED MILITELLO MOTORS (1029 N STATE ST, FAIRMONT, MN 56031, (507) 238-4444) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN INSPECTED PER THE N47 CUSTOMER SATISFACTION NOTIFICATION, AND THE VEHICLE WAS DEEMED SAFE. THE CONTACT HAD NO RECOLLECTION OF BEING INFORMED OF SUCH INSPECTION TAKING PLACE ON HIS VEHICLE. THE CONTACT ALSO SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER WHO PROVIDED THE SAME INFORMATION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK REMAINED EXPOSED AND THE HAZARD COULD POTENTIALLY LEAD TO A FIRE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
I AM SENDING THIS CORRESPONDENCE AFTER HAVING HEARD ABOUT THE SAFETY RELATED DEFECT CONCERNING THE FUEL TANK SYSTEM INTEGRITY IN REAR-IMPACTS OR CRASHES IN CERTAIN JEEP PRODUCTS. I OWN A 2002 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE THAT I PURCHASED NEW. MY 16 Y/O SON HAS DRIVEN THIS VEHICLE UNTIL NOW. I DO NOT FEEL THAT HE IS SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE NOW BECAUSE OF THE FINDINGS IN YOUR INVESTIGATION. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER'S FCA RECALL INFO CENTER AND WAS TOLD THAT MY JEEP, WAS NOT A PART OF THIS RECALL BECAUSE, "YOUR REAR STRUCTURAL REINFORCEMENT IS BETTER THAN THE ONES THAT HAVE THE RECALL", (THE PERSON ON THE PHONE GAVE ME HIS ID #DC1571). I ASKED HIM EXACTLY HOW MY REAR STRUCTURAL REINFORCEMENT IS BETTER AND HE ADMITTED THAT HE DID NOT KNOW. I TOLD HIM MY FACTORY INSTALLED TOW HITCH DID NOT CUT IT AND THAT I WANTED HIM TO EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE IN MY VEHICLE AND THE ONES IN THE RECALL. HE COULD NOT ANSWER AND PROVIDED ME WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE PHONE NUMBER SO THAT I COULD FILE A COMPLAINT. INSTEAD I SENT AN EMAIL TO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND I SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED A RESPONSE WITHIN 24 HOURS. I AM STILL WAITING. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME FOR SURE IF YOUR AGENCY RECOMMENDED THAT THE CATEGORY THAT MY JEEP FALLS INTO,BE RECALLED & MEASURES TAKEN TO SOMEHOW ADDRESS THE ISSUE? THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 01V374000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

SEE ATTACHED DIAGRAM. I WAS DRIVER OF CAR STOPPED AT RED LIGHT . JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE (VIN # [XXX]) ENGINE REVVED AT HIGH THROTTLE, WHILE BTSI IN PARK. THE DRIVER MAY BE HARD OF HEARING, MAY HAVE BEEN DISTRACTED TO HEAR THE NOISE OR KNOW COMES FROM HER CAR, MAY HAVE HAD WINDOWS SHUT AND BEEN INSULATED FROM THE SOUND, BUT SHE CHANGED GEAR FROM PARK TO DRIVE AS THE TIRES WERE SPINNING AS OBSERVED BY WITNESSES WHO SAW OR HEARD THOSE TIRES SPINNING WHILE THE CAR WAS IN STATIONARY POSITION. JEEP SPEED FORWARD ABOUT 70 FEET TO REAR-IMPACT MY CAR AND CRUSH THE REAR OF CAR INWARD. IT DISTORTED FRAME FROM REAR TO FRONT OR CAR, AND REAR IMPACT CAUSED DAMAGE TO FRONT OF CAR. PRIOR TO IMPACT, MY FOOT DEPRESSED HARD ON BRAKE BECAUSE I BRACED OR STIFFENED HARD FOR IMPACT, WHEN I HEARD THE SQUEAL OF TIRES OF STATIONARY CAR NEARBY, AND PEOPLE LEAVING A CARNIVAL WERE NEARBY. AFTER JEEP CRUSHED MY CAR INWARD, IT ACCELERATED AGAIN AGAINST MY CAR AND MY EFFORTS KEEP THE BRAKE PEDAL DOWN, AND IT PROPELLED MY CAR FORWARD, AND THEN CONTINUED ON ITS PATH OF DESTRUCTION. IT WRECKED MY CAR, ITSELF, ANOTHER CAR, AND COLLIDED WITH A ANOTHER TWO CARS, IT HIT PEDESTRIANS, CAUSED FATALITY, CAUSED INJURIES, KNOCKED DOWN PARKING METERS, SKIDDED DOZENS OF FEET, BROKE OFF ITS FRONT TIRES IN CHUNKS, SKIDDED ITS METAL RIM BECAUSE THAT WAS ALL THAT WAS LEFT OF THE TIRE, SKIDDED PIECES OF RUBBER OF TIRE, AND FINALLY GOT STUCK AFTER LAST IMPACT, WHILE ITS ENGINE REVVED AND ITS TIRES SPUN, CAUSING YAW SCRAPING OF TIRES ON SIDEWALK. _POLICE DEPT FOUND THE BTSI DEFECTIVE, AND THE SKID MARKS SHOW THAT THE BRAKES WERE INEFFECTIVE OR INOPERABLE AS JEEP'S ENGINE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. JEEP DRIVER RAN FROM IT AFTER IT GOT STUCK BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT IT WOULD EXPLODE. THE WHEELS STOPPED SPINNING WHEN THE MOTOR GOT SHUT. I HAVE READ THE RECENT NEWS ON THE INVESTIGATION INTO THE GRAND CHEROKEE GAS TANKS. BOTH MY WIFE AND I OWN THEM. I HAVE A 2001 AND SHE HAS A 2002. I AM VERY CONCERNED OVER THIS AS WE BOTH USE THESE CARS TO TAKE OUR DAUGHTER PLACES. I WORRY ABOUT THEIR SAFETY. I RECENTLY CHANGED THE FUEL FILTER ON HERS AND UNTIL THAT TIME DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE THAT THE FUEL TANK IS WHERE IT IS OR THAT IT IS MADE OF PLASTIC. IT'S APPARENT TO ME THAT THEY POSE A SERIOUS RISK, ESPECIALLY SINCE ONE OF THE BOLTS ON THE REAR SWAY BAR IS LESS THAN A QUARTER INCH FROM THE TANK AND COULD VERY EASILY PUNCTURE IT IN EVEN A MINOR REAR END CRASH. THIS IS SOMETHING YOU CANNOT IGNORE. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A REASON THEY MOVED THE TANK AFTER 2004. YOU HAVE MILLIONS OF TICKING TIME BOMBS DRIVING AROUND. THIS COULD POSE DANGER TO THE OCCUPANTS OF THE VEHICLE THAT REAR ENDS A JEEP AND TO ANY BY STANDARDS THAT TRY TO ASSIST IN AN ACCIDENT SITUATION. WITH THE WAY THE SPARE TIRE COMPARTMENT IS DESIGNED, THERE ARE A FEW HOLES THAT ARE COVERED WITH SEALANT THAT COULD ACT AS A PASSAGE WAY FOR THE FLAMES, THE SEALANT IN BOTH OF OUR CARS IS OLD AND BRITTLE SO IT WOULD OFFER VERY LITTLE RESISTANCE TO ANYTHING. *TR

I HAVE A 2002 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO, MANUFACTURED 8-2001. IN NOVEMBER 2004, THE CAR BEGAN TO HAVE A HARD START TO IT. THE LONGER THE CAR SAT, THE LONGER IT TOOK TO START IT. SOMETIMES THE CRANKING WENT ON FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS. IT WOULD DO THIS FOR 2-3 WEEKS AND THEN STOP FOR 2-3 WEEKS AND THEN REPEAT THE CYCLE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE MESAGE WAS 341: MEANING CAMSHAFT SENSOR MALFUNCTION. IT IS INVOLVED IN RELAYING POWER TO THE ENGINE AND, IF IT FAILED, COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF POWER WHILE IN MOTION. I SPENT $220 TO HAVE IT FIXED. HOWEVER, THE HARD START STILL CONTINUED. I WENT TO A JEEP DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY TOLD ME, WITHOUT A DOUBT, THAT IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP. I ASKED THEM HOW IN 3 MINUTES THEY COULD KNOW THAT. THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE HAS BEEN A REALLY HIGH FAILURE RATE OF THE FUEL PUMP MODEL WHICH WAS INSTALLED IN MY CAR. THEY TOLD ME THAT IT HAS BEEN A PERSISTENT PROBLEM IN GRAND CHEROKEES IN YEARS 1999-2003. I ASKED WHY THEY HAD NOT ISSUED A RECALL OR INVESTIGATIOIN AND THE SERVICE ASSISTANT TOLD ME THAT THE COST TO REPLACE THESE FUEL PUMPS WOULD BE EXHORBITANT IF DONE ACROSS A MASS SCALE. HOWEVER, HE WAS MORE THAN HAPPY TO GIVE ME A $550 BILL TO HAVE THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY IT BECAUSE, AT SOME POINT, IT WOULD FAIL ALTOGETHER RESULTING IN AN INOPERABLE VEHICLE. MY COMPLAINT IS THIS: IF THEY ARE AWARE OF A SERIOUS FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE THAT IS WIDESPREAD AND THEY REFUSE TO PUBLICLY ACKNOWLEDGE THIS FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE, IS THERE SOMETHING THAT NHTSA CAN DO?
