THE ALTERNATOR SUDDENLY FAILED ON MY 2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE OVERLAND, JUST AS DESCRIBED IN RECALL NOTICE P60 / NHTSA 14V-634. BUT FCA CLAIMS THAT MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED UNDER THE RECALL. I HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR TWO HOURS AT SPEEDS OF 45-65 MPH WHEN THE BATTERY ICON CAME ON IN THE DASH. THE PASSENGER LOOKED UP WHAT THIS MEANT AND IT SAID TO STOP DRIVING IMMEDIATELY, WITHIN A COUPLE OF MINUTES WE PULLED INTO A SERVICE STATION AND THERE WAS ALREADY SMOKE COMING OUT FROM UNDERNEAT THE HOOD. LIFTED THE HOOD AND IT WAS ORIGINATING FROM THE ALTERNATOR AND IT WAS SPARKING. COULDN'T TELL IF IT WAS ALREADY BURNING OR JUST SMOKING. CONTACTED JEEP AND THEY SAID TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER FOR EVALUATION. AS OF TODAY THEIR ADVICE IS TO SAVE PAPERWORK "IN CASE" THE RECALL IS EXPANDED.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I WOULD LIKE TO FORMALLY REPORT WHAT I CONSIDER A CRITICAL FLAW WITH MY 2012 9JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE EQUIPPED WITH THE PENTASTAR V6 ENGINE. I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE INSTANCES OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION BY THE ENGINE IN THE PAST 45 DAYS. THE MOST RECENT EVENT RESULTED IN MY DAMAGING VEHICLE'S WHEEL AS WELL AS NEARLY HITTING A PARKED VEHICLE. I HAVE 85533 MILES ON MY CAR AND THIS FLAW HAS ONLY MANIFESTED ITSELF IN THE PAST 3 DAYS (85533MILES). I HAVE CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALER CONCERNING THIS ISSUE, BUT HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IN ORDER TO LOOK INTO THIS OBVIOUS SAFETY DEFECT, I AM REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THEIR DIAGNOSTIC TIME. I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER OF A PRODUCT THAT HAS SUCH A BLATANT SAFETY RISK SHOULD BE APPRECIATIVE OF BEING INFORMED OF SUCH A DEFECT, AND CERTAINLY TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. ON 8-4-16 I WAS OPERATING MY 2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE IN A PARING LOT DROPPING OFF SOME PEOPLE. AFTER PUTTING THE VEHICLE BACK INTO DRIVE AND MOVING FORWARD, I WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PETAL, I COULD HEAR A SOUND OF "AIR" WHICH SEEMED TO BE ESCAPING FROM SOMEWHERE. FORTUNATELY THE PARKING LOT WAS EMPTY AND I COASTED TO A STOP. I HAD ZERO BRAKE FUNCTION! THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING THAT THIS ISSUE WAS ABOUT TO OCCUR, AND NO TYPE OF "SERVICE ENGINE OR BRAKE" LIGHT WENT ON. MY FAMILY AND I ARE VERY FORTUNATE THAT WE WERE NOT ON THE HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEEDS WHEN THIS BRAKE SYSTEM FAILED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. NOTE THAT A YEAR OR SO AGO I HAD THIS VEHICLE SERVICED AT MY LOCAL JEEP DEALER FOR A GOVERNMENT RECALL ON THE BRAKE SYSTEM. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT IT WAS A HYDRAULIC BOOSTER UNDER NHTSA # 14V154000. I HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED INTO A DIFFERENT JEEP DEALER FOR THIS ISSUE. THEY REPAIRED IT UNDER THE "BOOSTER" RECALL. MY INVOICE MENTIONS THAT THEY TESTED AND REPLACED THE BRAKE BOOSTER DUE TO CORROSION. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF ANYONE DRIVING A 2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE! THE PROBLEM WAS ALLEGEDLY FIXED ONCE, BUT HAD TO BE FIXED A SECOND TIME. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT MUST BE CORRECTED IMMEDIATELY ON ALL LIKE VEHICLES.
CAR LOST COMPLETE POWER IN PARKING LOT. ALTERNATOR FAILED AND SHORTED AND DRAINED THE BATTERY. ALTERNATOR WAS STILL HOT AFTER SEVERAL HOURS AND A BURNT ODOR COULD BE DETECTED. LUCKILY IT DID NOT CATCH FIRE AS OTHERS HAVE WHEN THIS FAILURE OCCURRED. WHEN THE ALTERNATOR FAILED IT SHORTED THE BATTERY AND ALSO THE PCM. JEEP HAS A CURRENT RECALL OUT ON THE 160 AMP ALTERNATOR FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM, BUT SINCE THIS IS THE 180 AMP THEY ARE WASHING THEIR HANDS OF THE SITUATION. PCM'S ARE ON A HUGE BACK ORDER AND TOOK SEVERAL DAYS AND A MULTIPLE PHONE CALLS TO FIND SOMEONE WILLING TO SELL ME ONE. AFTER THE FIRST ROUND OF REPAIRS BEFORE THE PCM WAS REPLACED THE CAR DIED WHILE BEING DRIVEN BY THE MECHANIC. HAVING A CAR THAT COULD RANDOMLY DIE WHILE BEING DRIVEN NEEDS TO BE TAKEN MORE SERIOUSLY BY JEEP/CHRYSLER.
ALTERNATOR BURNS OUT AND FAILS SUDDENLY WHILE DRIVING. THERE ARE KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH SIMILAR PARTS ON JEEP VEHICLES. THE MANUFACTURER IS AWARE. I SUBMITTED A CLAIM TO FIAT JEEP AND THEY REFUSED TO REIMBURSE ME, FOR NOW.
THERE IS A LEAK AT THE TRANSMISSION COOLER. LOOKING ON LINE, THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM. I NOTICES THE PROBLEM WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE UP A HILL AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT TO THE PROPER GEAR, AND THE CAR SLOWED AND I PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO NOT BLOCK TRAFFIC. THIS WAS DANGEROUS AND I WAS NOT HAPPY. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND ON, AND IT SEEMED TO WORK FINE. THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT LOCATED THE PROBLEM TO BE THE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER LEAK CAUSING LOW TRANSMISSION FLUID/OIL AND MAKING THE CAR NOT SHIFT PROPERLY. I WAS DRIVING/ACCELERATING UP HILL AT THE TIME. THE JEEP DEALER AT FOLSOM CALIFORNIA HAS THE CAR NOW.
CREAKING SOUND FROM PASSENGER'S SEAT WHEN TURNING WITH AND WITHOUT THE SEAT BEING OCCUPIED. DEALERS DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. THEY SAID IT WAS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT.
I CONTACTED CHRYSTLER AND THEY REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING. MY LEATHER DASH IS PULLING UP. THERE ARE TONS OF EXAMPLES OF THIS HAPPENING WHEN YOU SEARCH THE INTERNET.
VEHICLE HAS INTERMITTENT NO START CONDITION. TIPM HAS BEEN REPLACED AND EXTERNAL RELAY HAS BEEN INSTALLED PER R009 RECALL BUT CONTINUES TO HAVE A FAIL TO START CONDITION. ENGINE CRANKS AS NORMAL BUT ENGINE DOESN'T START. WILL RUN AFTER MULTIPLE TRIES. COST OF REPAIR WAS $900 BUT MOSTLY PAID BY EXTENDED WARRANTY. 38,000 MILES.
LAST FEW DAYS WERE EXTREMELY HOT IN THE NORTH EAST.MY CAR WAS PARKED IN AN OPEN PARKING LOT OVER THE WEEKEND AND THE FRONT WINDSHIELD DEVELOPED A CRACK DUE TO EXTREME HOT WEATHER. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER (FIAT/CHRYSLER) TOLD ME THE STANDARD WARRANTY EXPIRES AFTER A YEAR. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING IT REPLACED THRU MY INSURANCE COMPANY. I SUSPECT THIS TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT OF THE TEMPERED GLASS.
I WAS WALKING OUT TO MY CAR AFTER LEAVING A STORE. THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED IN THE PARKING LOT FOR NO MORE THAN 20MIN. I GOT TO MY CAR AND BEFORE I STARTED THE VEHICLE I NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I OPENED THE HOOD AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS SMOKE COMING FROM THE ALTERNATOR AS WELL AS THE DISTINCT SMELL ASSOCIATED WITH AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. I RUSHED BACK INTO THE STORE ASKING IF THEY HAD A HOSE OR A BUCKET. THEY HAD A PARTIALLY FILLED WATER JUG THAT THEY LET ME USE. I WENT BACK OUT TO THE CAR AND NOTICED THAT THE SMOKE WAS BEGINNING TO INTENSIFY. I ALSO NOTICED THAT SPARKS WERE BEGINNING TO FLY OUT OF THE AREA. I DOUSED THE AREA IN WATER TO QUELL ANY FIRE THAT MAY HAVE BEEN PRESENT (AT THIS POINT THERE WERE NO VISIBLE FLAMES BUT PLENTY OF SMOKE). I THEN QUICKLY ACCESSED THE BATTERY LOCATED IN THE VEHICLE UNDER THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT AND, USING A MULTI-TOOL, WAS ABLE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. THE SMOKE HAD ONCE AGAIN INTENSIFIED AND I USED THE REMAINING WATER LEFT IN THE JUG. HOWEVER, THE SMOKE CONTINUED. I QUICKLY WENT BACK INTO THE STORE AND FILLED THE WATER JUG WITH MORE WATER (I NEEDED TO BE QUICK SO I ONLY PARTIALLY FILLED THE JUG, ABOUT 1/8 OF TOTAL CAPACITY). WHEN I GOT BACK TO MY CAR THE SMOKE WAS STILL INCREASING BUT AT A LESSER RATE FROM WHEN THE BATTERY WAS CONNECTED. I DOUSED THE ALTERNATOR AND AREA AROUND IT WITH ALL OF THE WATER IN THE JUG. AT THIS POINT THE SMOKE HAD STOPPED BUT THE AREA WAS STILL VERY HOT. I REFILLED THE JUG AND DOUSED THE AREA AGAIN. AFTER THE LAST WATER JUG, THE AREA WAS WARM BUT YOU COULD TOUCH IT. AT THIS POINT I CALLED AAA TO SEND A TOW TRUCK. I CONTINUED TO MONITOR THE VEHICLE UNTIL THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED. THE SMOKE WAS GONE AND THE AREA HAD CONTINUED TO COOL. PRIOR TO THE FIRE, THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS NOR ANY INDICATION WHATSOEVER THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR.
CONCERNED WITH PROPER DEPLOYMENT OF PASSENGER AIRBAG. LEATHER DASH COMING LOOSE WITH SIGNIFICANT WRINKLES AND DISTORTION. WILL AFFECT PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT PER DESIGN INTENT DUE TO DEVIATION IN TEAR SEAM GEOMETRY. (WORKED PREVIOUSLY AS SEATBELT & AIRBAG ENGINEER AND HAVE WITNESSED EFFECT OF TEAR SEAM DEVIATION. PICTURES ATTACHED ARE NOT FROM MY VEHICLE, BUT SHOW ONSET OF WRINKLE CONDITION AND A DEPLOYED AIRBAG FOR TEAR SEAM LOCATION REFERENCE.)
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 40 MPH, THE BATTERY WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT ALL ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS FAILED. IN ADDITION, A BURNING ODOR WAS PRESENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ABLE TO RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY HAD FAILED AND THE ENGINE CONTROL UNIT WAS DAMAGED BECAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V634000( ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,400.

WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTED FROM PARK TO DRIVE, THE VEHICLE ROLLED AWAY WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS SERVICED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V154000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC), BUT THE REMEDY FAILED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SERVICE BRAKE AND HYDRAULIC SYSTEM FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS INVALID. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 27,300.

WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE ALTERNATOR WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THE POWER TO THE VEHICLE DEPLETED, AND A BURNING ODOR EMITTED FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PARKED THE VEHICLE AND OBSERVED SMOKE CONNECTED TO THE ALTERNATOR AND HEARD A SIZZLING SOUND FROM INSIDE THE ALTERNATOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ALTERNATOR FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 90,000.
ON JUNE 24, 2016, BETWEEN 1:30 PM AND 2 PM, I WAS DRIVING FROM BRENTWOOD CA TO VALLEJO CA ON HWY 780 W AND AFTER TURNING A CURVE ON THE FREEWAY WHICH SLOPED DOWN TOWARDS CURTOLA PARKWAY, I APPLIED THE BRAKES AT ABOUT 30 MILES PER HOUR AFTER I EMERGED FROM THE OVERPASS WHICH WAS AT LEAST 5 CAR LENGTHS BEFORE THE CARS AHEAD OF ME WHICH WAS STOPPED AT A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT. HOWEVER, THE JEEP CONTINUED TO ROLL EVEN THOUGH I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES TO THE FLOOR BOARD. WHEN I REALIZED THE JEEP DID NOT STOP, AFTER CHECKING FOR VEHICLES ON THE LEFT FROM THE REAR VIEW MIRROR, I SWERVED TO THE LEFT TO AVOID HITTING THE TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME, BUT I STILL HIT THE LEFT CORNER OF THE NISSAN TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME BUT THE TRUCK DID NOT HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HIM. I DAMAGED THE RIGHT CORNER OF THE FRONT OF MY JEEP. THE JEEP IS UNSAFE BECAUSE THE BRAKES FAILED AND WOULD HAVE CAUSED A FATAL ACCIDENT TO ME, MY THREE PASSENGERS, AND OTHER VEHICLES HAD I BEEN TRAVELLING AT A HIGH SPEED. I COMPLIED WITH ALL AVAILABLE RECALL REPAIRS INCLUDING THE BRAKE RECALL IN 2014 AND ALL THE SUGGESTED CHRYSLER MAINTENANCE ON THE JEEP. I REPORTED THE ACCIDENT TO MY INSURANCE GEICO AND TO CHRYSLER.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ALTERNATOR CAUSED THE COMPUTER SYSTEM TO FAIL AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V634000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. LEATHER ON DASH STARTED WRINKLING/BUBBLING THEN JUST PEELED BACK (LEATHER DASH HAS DELAMINATED). I AM BEING TOLD THE WRINKLES IN THE LEATHER DASH COULD CAUSE AN IRREGULAR PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. DEALERSHIP RICK HENDRICK OF CHARLESTON AND HOOVER OF SUMMERVILLE ONLY CONCERNED WITH PROPER DEPLOYMENT OF PASSENGER AIRBAG. LEATHER DASH COMING LOOSE WITH SIGNIFICANT WRINKLES AND DISTORTION. WILL AFFECT PASSENGER AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT PER DESIGN INTENT DUE TO DEVIATION IN TEAR SEAM GEOMETRY. RESEARCH STATES THE DASH PROBLEM IS A RESULT OF A SUPPLIER NOT PERFORMING THE CORRECT APPLICATION OF ADHESIVE AND CURE PROCEDURES.
THIS HAPPENED JUNE 2016 IN CALGARY, AB. CANADA. I WAS UPSET THEN AND AM STILL UPSET NOW, ENOUGH TO COMPLAIN HERE. I WAS DRIVING ON STREET AT LOW SPEED, THE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON, I PULLED OVER LESS THAN A MINUTE LATER, ENGINE WAS SQUEALING BADLY, TURNED OFF ENGINE, THERE WAS A LARGE AMOUNT OF SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, I OPENED HOOD AND WAS HIT WITH A BLAST OF SMOKE, I THOUGHT ENGINE WAS ON FIRE. AFTER SMOKE DISSIPATED, I COULD SEE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM ALTERNATOR. IT APPEARED TO HAVE OVERHEATED AND MELTED A CONNECTOR/WIRING. I HAD THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED, BUT THE PCM WAS ALSO FRIED, SO HAD TO HAVE IT REPLACED AS WELL. $2000 LATER I WAS BACK ON THE ROAD. I CHECKED FCA FOR RECALLS. FCA SAY THE 160 AMP ALTERNATOR IS COVERED UNDER A RECALL BUT NOT THE 180 AMP. I HAVE THE 180 AMP ALTERNATOR. I TALKED TO 3-4 PEOPLE AT FCA AND EMAILED THEM ALL THE INFO AND INVOICES AND THE SAID "WE ARE VERY SORRY AND THAT IS UNFORTUNATE BUT THERE IS NO RECALL OR COVERAGE" FOR MY ALTERNATOR OR PCM. HOWEVER, THEY DID SAY THAT WITH ENOUGH COMPLAINTS THAT POSSIBLY IN THE FUTURE THERE WILL BE A CAMPAIGN TO RECALL THE 180 AMP ALTERNATOR AND TOLD ME TO KEEP MY RECEIPTS. SO EVERYONE KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS AND KEEP COMPLAINING AS I BELIEVE THEY WILL EVENTUALLY RECALL THIS ALTERNATOR, AND WE WILL GET SOME REIMBURSEMENT.
ELECTRICAL SHORT IN PASSENGER SIDE SUN VISOR CAUGHT THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE ON FIRE WHILE PARKED IN OUR GARAGE. WE HAD NOTICED A BURNING SMELL A WEEK EARLIER AND MY WIFE HAD SEEN SMOKE IN THE PASSENGER CABIN. WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY KEPT IT FOUR DAYS BEFORE RETURNING IT TO US, BLAMING A RODENT NEST IN THE VENTILATION FAN. THREE DAYS LATER IT CAUGHT FIRE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A WHINING NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE AND A BURNING ODOR ENTERED THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PARKED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED SMOKE EMITTING FROM THE ALTERNATOR. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ALTERNATOR FAILED AND DESTROYED THE BATTERY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V634000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.

BREAK BOOSTER RECALL - 6/3/2016 - MY 2012 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE COULD NOT BE STOPPED. WHILE DRIVING, AS I ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE, I NOTICED THE BREAK PEDAL WAS MUCH HARDER THAN USUAL. I HAVE HAD TIMES WHERE IT HAPPENS 2 DAYS IN A ROW, ONCE A WEEK, AND ONCE A MONTH. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER A FEW TIMES ALREADY, BUT THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE FIGURE OUT WHAT THE ISSUE IS. AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE AT THE DEALER FOR OVER 1 MONTH, I SPOKE TO A SENIOR TECHNICIAN THAT WORKS AT THE DEALER AND HE SAID IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE. HE TOLD ME THAT VEHICLES WITH THE 5.7L ENGINE AND THE PUSH TO START BUTTON HAVE BEEN HAVING THIS ISSUE AND THE ISSUE STARTS AROUND 30,000 TO 50,000 MILES AND THEY ARE NOT SURE WHAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM OR HOW TO FIX IT.
FAILURE OF AUTOMATIC REAR TAILGATE AND ASSOCIATED OBSTRUCTION/SAFETY SENSOR MECHANISMS. TAILGATE OPENS TO WITHIN AN INCH OR TWO OF FULL HEIGHT THEN SILENTLY STARTS TO FALL BACK AT AN INCREASING VELOCITY AND SLAMS SHUT. PRESSING THE CONTROL BUTTON TO STOP THE FALL DOES NOT WORK NOR DOES THE RAPID DROP STOP WHEN ENCOUNTERING AN OBSTRUCTION. WHEN TAILGATE FIRST STARTED TO REVERSE DIRECTION I REACHED IN TO PRESS THE BUTTON TO STOP OR REVERSE IT AND IT CONTINUED DOWNWARD AND PINNED MY ARM AND CAUSED ME TO WRENCH MY BACK. HAD ANYONE LEANED INTO THE BACK AS IT WAS GOING UP, IT WOULD HAVE SILENTLY SLAMMED BACK DOWN ON THEIR HEAD OR NECK RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY AS THE TAILGATE IS QUITE HEAVY AND QUICKLY GAINS SUBSTANTIAL MOMENTUM AND FORCE. SINCE THE TAILGATE NEVER REACHES FULL HEIGHT IT APPEARS THAT SAFETY INTERLOCKS DO NOT GET ACTIVATED/TRIGGERED HENCE IT BECOMES A DEAD DROP. IT APPEARS THAT THE CAUSE IS A LOSS OF PRESSURE IN THE RIGHT REAR STRUT, THOUGH OTHER ELECTRONIC FACTORS MAY BE CONSIDERED. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE SERIOUS OR EVEN A FATAL INJURY. A REPAIR IS SCHEDULED AT THE DEALER ON MAY 25. THIS ISSUE MIRRORS THE 2005 CHRYSLER PACIFICA RECALL NHTSA REF#06V432000 IN WHICH A P2066 FAULT CODE WAS GENERATED LEADING TO FUEL PUMP MODULE REPLACEMENT. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT CHRYSLER AGREED TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY TO 150,000 MILES AS THERE WAS WAS A DEFECT IN THE ENGINE SUBFRAME ASSEMBLY LEADING TO CORROSION IN THE FUEL PUMP AREA.
