2009 JEEP PATRIOT. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE RACK AND PINION FAILURE. *SMD
THE FACTORY RADIO IN MY DAUGHTER'S JEEP PATRIOT KEPT BLOWING ITS SUPPLY FUSE. WE REPLACED THE RADIO FIGURING THAT WAS THE ISSUE BUT THE FUSE WOULD STILL BLOW. IN TROUBLESHOOTING THE PROBLEM I DISCOVERED THAT THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS WAS NOT PROPERLY SUPPORTED AS ITS ROUTED THROUGH THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. IT ENTERS NEAR THE FLOOR IN THE WALL NEXT TO THE DRIVERS LEFT FOOT AND THEN TURNS HORIZONTAL UNDER THE DASH JUST ABOVE THE SUPPORT ASSEMBLY FOR THE CLUTCH/BRAKE PEDALS. THE HARNESS WAS LYING ON TOP OF THE SHARP METAL EDGE ON THE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET AND WORE THROUGH THE INSULATION ALLOWING THE 12V FEED FOR THE ROAD TO SHORT TO GROUND BLOWING THE FUSE. AT LEAST ONE OTHER WIRE HAD ITS INSULATION BURNED IN THE PROCESS. NOT ENOUGH TO DEEM IT "A FIRE" BUT DEFINITELY A PROBLEM. I CONSIDER OURSELVES VERY FORTUNATE - ONLY THE RADIO WAS AFFECTED. IT COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN ONE OF THE SAFETY SYSTEMS - BRAKES, AIR BAGS, ETC. THAT ALSO GO THROUGH THAT HARNESS AND IF MULTIPLE WIRES WERE INVOLVED THE FUSES COULD HAVE BEEN INSUFFICIENT TO PREVENT AN ELECTRICAL FIRE WITHIN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. I OWN 2 JEEP PATROITS - A 2009 AND A 2010. I CHECKED MY 2010 AND THE HARNESS ON THAT PATRIOT APPEARS TO BE SUSPENDED UP AGAINST THE DASH FRAME SO IT'S OFF THE BRACKETS FOR THE BRAKE/CLUTCH. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE HARNESS IN OUR 2009 WAS JUST MISS-INSTALLED OR A DESIGN FAULT WAS CORRECTED IN 2010. I DO HAVE DIGITAL PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE TO THE WIRING HARNESS WHICH I CAN FORWARD IF THIS ISSUE IS DEEMED SERIOUS ENOUGH FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 JEEP PATRIOT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL WAS SEPARATED DUE TO A DEFECT IN THE LOWER CONTROL ARM AND BALL JOINT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. THE DEALER FOUND THAT THE PASSENGER'S SIDE FRONT BALL JOINT AND LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS ALSO DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM AND BALL JOINT WERE REPLACED AND THE MANUFACTURER ASSISTED WITH THE REPAIR. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,460 AND THE APPROXIMATE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 14,000.
TUESDAY, MAY 21, 2013 MORNING THE JEEP STARTED TO MAKE NOISE AT THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE, SO ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2013 I TOOK IT TO FIRESTONE IN BRIDGEVILLE FOR A SECOND OPINION. THEY ADVISED THAT WE HAVE THE SUSPENSION CHECKED AS WELL AS THE SPRING FOR THE STRUTS. THEY HAD ADVISED THAT THE CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE AND PASSED THEIR INSPECTION. MAY 23, 2013 ON MY WAY TO WORK AND I STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN. WATER BEGAN TO FLOW THROUGH MY REAR VIEW MIRROR FROM THE SUNROOF. AT THAT TIME I HADN'T TOUCHED THE SUNROOF SINCE THE DATE OF PURCHASE. PER JEEP FORUMS THIS IS A CONSTANT HASSLE WITH THE CAR. I WAS NOT GIVEN A CHOICE IN WHAT I COULD HAVE FOR A VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP DUE TO CREDIT ISSUES. I HAD REQUESTED ON 05/24/2013, A REVIEW OF THE WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE. I HAD THE CAR LESS THAN A WEEK AND HAD TO ALREADY TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY HAD ADVISED THE NOISE I WAS HEARING WAS A ?CONTROL ARM CLIP THAT UNLATCHED?; THEY VERBALLY SAID THAT THEY TOOK CARE OF IT. HOWEVER FROM THE POINT ON I STILL COULD HEAR IT. I WOULD CALL [XXX] AND HE WOULD SAY THAT THE CAR WAS STILL DRIVABLE?. I DIDN'T RECEIVE ANYTHING IN WRITING FROM THEM. I CHECK JEEP FOR ANY RECALLS, BUT FOUND NOTHING ON MY VIN. SO I DECIDED TO FORGET ABOUT IT UNTIL THIS PAST MAY WHEN MY CAR WAS FIRST INSPECTED BY KENNY ROSS SOUTH. IT PASSED EMISSIONS HOWEVER THEY COULDN'T PASS IT COMPLETELY. I HAD IT RECENTLY SERVICED AND THE ROTORS CONTROL ARMS BALL JOINTS AND STRUTS NEED DONE. IT'S UNREAL, THE CAR IS A 2009. AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT AN HOUR THE RPM'S STARTED GOING UP AND THE CAR STARTED WHIRRING LIKE IT WAS STRAINING. A LIGHT CAME ON THAT I LATER IDENTIFIED AS THE TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT LIGHT. THE CAR SLOWED DOWN ON THE INTERSTATE TO ABOUT 5MPH. I HAD TO PULL OFF AND SIT FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES UNTIL THE CAR COOLED DOWN AND THE LIGHT WENT OFF. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE AND THE VERY SAME THING HAPPENED TWO MORE TIMES. YOUR CAR SLOWING DOWN ON A BUSY INTERSTATE COMING FROM WASHINGTON DC IS VERY SCARY. I FEEL FORTUNATE THAT WE WERE ABLE TO GET OVER AND NOT CRASH. WE TOOK THE CAR INTO A DEALER WHO CHECKED IT AND SAID THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. SO WE DROVE IT AGAIN. IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME DURING A 90 MILE TRIP. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
WATER KEEPS FLOWING FROM THE CEILING DOME LIGHT. I HAVE HAD IT TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, THEY KEEP BLOWING OUT THE ROOF DRAINS, AND IT KEEPS HAPPENING. I WENT OUT TO THE DRIVEWAY AND HEARD A HUMMING SOUND COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AND WATER WAS POURING FROM THE CEILING LIGHT . I STARTED THE VEHICLE, AND ALL THE LIGHTS BEGAN FLASHING, AND WHEN I TURNED THE KEY OFF, IT KEPT RUNNING. I COULD NOT TURN THE CAR OFF!!! I HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!! *TR
VEHICLE DOES NOT FILL UP WITH GASOLINE PROPERLY, POTENTIALLY DUE TO A MALFUNCTIONING SAFETY DEVICE IN THE GAS TANK. THE PUMP TURNS OFF AFTER.5 GALLONS, AND MUST WAIT APPROXIMATELY 15 SECONDS AND THEN PUT IN ANOTHER .5 GALLONS, AND SO ON. THE JEEP DEALERSHIP BELIEVES IT IS A STUCK/MALFUNCTIONING ROLL OVER VALVE LOCATED IN THE GAS TANK AND SINCE THE ROLL OVER VALVE IS A PART OF THE TANK, THE ENTIRE TANK WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. WHILE THE FILL UP PROBLEM IS AN INCONVENIENCE A MALFUNCTIONING ROLL OVER VALVE IN AN ACCIDENT, SPECIFICALLY A ROLL OVER ACCIDENT, MAY ALLOW FUEL TO LEAK OUT CREATING A SERIOUS LIFE SAFETY SITUATION THAT MAY NOT OTHERWISE EXIST. THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT, IT BEGAN SHORTLY AFTER I BOUGHT THE JEEP USED IN FEBRUARY 2013, WENT AWAY FOR A WHILE, BUT NOW THE PROBLEM HAS COME BACK. *TR
THE DEALER HAS DETERMINED THE LEFT FRONT BALL JOINT HAS PLAY IN IT AND REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED. *TR
THE LEFT FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM NEEDS TO BE REPLACED DUE TO A WORN BALL JOINT. THIS WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE JEEP DEALER. THE VEHICLE HAS 39453 MILES ON IT AND THIS IS PREMATURE WEAR. IT APPEARS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS AND 2 OTHER SIMILAR CHRYSLER BUILT CARS. IF THE BALL JOINT SEPARATES, CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WOULD BE LOST. *TR
I HAVE A VEHICLE WITH A TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM. TWO TIRE VALVE STEMS ARE CRACKED AND ONE HAS A SLOW LEAK. I HAVE READ OF OTHERS WITH THE SAME SYSTEM WHERE THE VALVE STEMS SIMPLE BREAK WHEN HAND WASHING THE CAR AND THE TIRE GOES FLAT IN SECONDS. THIS IS A SERIOUS HAZARD AND COULD KILL SOMEONE IF IT HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY. IT IS OUTRAGEOUSLY EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE THESE STEMS. *TR
JUST PURCHASED THE 2009 JEEP PATRIOT FOR MY SON, IT RAINED AND IT IS LEAKING WATER IN THE DOME LIGHTS AND BEHIND THE ACCELERATOR. I AM SCARED THERE WILL BE ELECTRICAL DAMAGE AS WELL AS MOLD AND MILDEW. I HAVE STARTED LOOKING UP ISSUES ONLINE AND HAVE FOUND MANY PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. SHOULDN'T JEEP BE HELD RESPONSIBLE???? *TR
WATER WAS LEAKING FROM THE FRONT DOME LIGHT AND REAR AND FRONT DRIVER'S FLOOR BED WAS SOAKED WITH WATER. THE VEHICLE HAS A SUNROOF AND WE HAVE READ ABOUT MANY PEOPLE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM. CONTACTED JEEP VEHICLE WAS 2 MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING. TOLD US TO TAKE IT TO A JEEP DEALER AND GET IT FIXED OURSELVES. MANY PEOPLE HAVE DONE THIS MULTIPLES TIMES AND THEIR CARS STILL LEAK. JEEP IS STILL LEAKING ON THE FLOOR BEDS. THEY ARE SOAKED ON DRIVER'S SIDE. IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TO RAIN AND JUST THE DEW ON THE CAR CAUSES THE FLOOR TO BE WET. WE FEAR ELECTRICAL DAMAGE THAT CAN CAUSE FAULT OF VEHICLE RESULTING IN INJURY, MOLD, AND RUSTING OUT. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS! *TR
RIGHT LOWER CONTROL ARM NEEDED REPLACEMENT AT JUST OVER 37,000 MILES. THE LEFT LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS REPLACED PREVIOUSLY AT 28,000 MILES. IN 50 YEARS, I'VE NEVER OWNED A CAR THAT NEEDED TO HAVE THE CONTROL ARMS REPLACED THIS QUICKLY. SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT THAT OUGHT TO BE CORRECTED BY CHRYSLER. *TR
MY JEEP PATRIOT HAS A VERY UNUSUAL PROBLEM OF GOING INTO "LIMP" MODE UNDER NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS--EVEN AFTER AS LITTLE OF 15 MINUTES OF DRIVING. THE "TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT" LIGHT COMES ON, AND THE VEHICLE'S ON-BOARD COMPUTER FORCES THE VEHICLE DOWN TO SLOW, SUB-HIGHWAY SPEEDS--EVEN AS SLOW AS 35 MPH. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN VERY DANGEROUS FOR US (ESPECIALLY ON THE FREEWAY) AND OCCURS UNDER NORMAL (AND EVEN COLD TEMPERATURES). IT IS NOT REMEDIED BY REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION OIL OR EVEN INSTALLING A TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER (BOTH WHICH I HAVE TRIED). I HAVE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO NUMEROUS MECHANICS--INCLUDING THE DEALERSHIP AND A TRANSMISSION SHOP--WHICH HAVE ALL BEEN STUMPED BY THE ISSUE. AFTER LEARNING ABOUT AND THOROUGHLY DIAGNOSING THE PROBLEM, THE TRANSMISSION SHOP CONCLUDED THAT SOMETHING VERY UNUSUAL WAS WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION, AND THEY WROTE A STATEMENT TO THAT EFFECT. AFTER EXPERIENCING THIS DANGEROUS, FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH MY JEEP PATRIOT, I STARTED A WEBSITE TO COLLECT RESPONSES FROM OTHER JEEP OWNERS. IN THE SHORT PERIOD OF TIME THE WEBSITE HAS BEEN UP (JEEPPATRIOTTRANSMISSIONOVERHEAT.COM), I HAVE RECEIVED MANY SUBMISSIONS FROM OTHER OWNERS WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM (AND ALL OF WHICH HAVE ATTESTED THAT THE DEALERSHIP WAS ULTIMATELY STUMPED BY THE PROBLEM). THE PROBLEM IS FOUND ON VEHICLE YEARS RANGING FROM 2007-2014. SOME OWNERS BELIEVE THE KOHO BEARINGS ARE THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM, BUT IN ANY EVENT, A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT IS THE ONLY KNOWN REMEDY. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM THOROUGHLY, AS WELL AS REVIEWING EXISTING RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE, I AM NOW CONFIDENT THAT THE PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD (EXISTS ON 1,000+ PATRIOTS), IS FOUND ON NEW AND USED PATRIOTS OF ALL MILEAGES, IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND HAS BEEN IGNORED BY JEEP. IT IS MY OPINION THAT A SAFETY RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED BY THE NHTSA, AFTER CONDUCTING ITS OWN RESEARCH. *TR
WHILE SERVICING THIS CUSTOMER'S VEHICLE WE PUT AN A TIRE INFLATOR ON THE VEHICLE'S VALVE STEM. THE VALVE STEM BROKE AND WAS VERY BRITTLE. THE TIRE LOST ALL AIR PRESSURE AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED AT A TIRE SHOP FOR $138. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 JEEP PATRIOT. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATE Y 40 MPH WHEN THE TRANSMISSION EMITTED AN ABNORMAL NOISE AS THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND RESUME AS NORMAL. IN ADDITION, THE REAR END OF THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE CONTINUOUSLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED CONSTANTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON SIX OCCASIONS FOR THE FAILURE. THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE CENTRAL COMPUTER SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE UPDATED. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR A SECOND OPINION AND THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE REAR LOWER CONTROL ARM, PCV AND THE POWER TRAIN MODULE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 JEEP PATRIOT. WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC STOP, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE RECURRED WHILE DRIVING AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 08V528000 (POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:CONTROL MODULE (TCM, PCM)) THAT COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE, PATRIOT BEGAN TO MAKE A WEIRD NOISE AND WHEN BRAKING ON ANY INCLINE THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD FELL AS THOUGH IT WAS BOUNCING AND YOU COULD HEAR A TICKING NOISE FROM PASSENGER FRONT AREA OF CAR. SHORTLY AFTER THE ABS/TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER HAVING THE CAR SCANNED AT A LOCAL SHOP, IT WASN'T READING WHAT WAS WRONG. THEY RESET COMPUTER AND AFTER DRIVING OVER 20MPH, THE LIGHTSCAME BACK ON. I RECENTLY TOOK IT INTO A LOCAL MECHANIC SHOP WHERE THEY ANALYZED THE COMPUTER SYSTEM AND BRAKE SYSTEM. THE BACK RIGHT PASSENGER TIRE ABS SENSOR HAD FAILED AND NEEDS REPLACED ALONG WITH THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND BALL JOINTS ON THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE ESTIMATING COST TO FIXES AROUND $1000.00 FOR A CAR WITH 57,500 MILES NOW. *TR
HAD TO REPLACE BOTH OUTER TIE ROD ENDS AND BOTH FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARMS . HAD VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE ON 7/5/12 AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER AND WERE SUPPOSE TO DO A VEHICLE INSPECTION AT THIS TIME. *TR
WHEN FILLING THE CAR WITH GAS AT THE PUMP, IT FAILS TO SHUT OFF WHEN FULL AND POURS FROM THE TANK NOZZLE NECK AND SPLASHED DOWN THE SIDE OF THE CAR AS WELL AS THE INDIVIDUAL FILLING THE TANK WITH GAS. THE ONLY REASON THAT THE GAS CEASES TO FLOW OUT OF THE TANK IS DUE THE SAFETY FEATURE OF THE PUMP NOZZLE WHEN IT SHUTS DOWN. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ONLINE, I HAVE LEARNED THAT IT IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH THIS MODEL JEEP. THE IS NOT AN OCCASIONAL OCCURRENCE, BUT ONE WHICH HAPPENS EVERY TIME THE CAR IS FILLED REGARDLESS OF HOW THE PUMP NOZZLE IS PLACE IN THE FILLER NECK.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 JEEP PATRIOT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT END WAS EXHIBITING AN ABNORMAL SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHERE AN INSPECTION WAS PERFORMED. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE FRONT BALL JOINT HAD WORN PREMATURELY DUE TO DEFECTIVE MATERIAL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,700 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 10,500. UPDATED 12/4/13*CN THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED BOTH LOWER CONTROL ARMS, BALL JOINTS AND TIE RODS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.
I HAD MY VEHICLE AT TUFFY MUFFLER FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION/INSPECTION WHEN THEY POINTED OUT THAT THREE OF THE FOUR METAL TIRE PRESSURE/POSITION SENSORS WERE CRACKED. THE STATED THIS COULD RESULT IN AN IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF AIR WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THEY HAD REPLACED AN UNUSUAL NUMBER OF THESE ITEMS IN CHRYSLER MADE PRODUCTS. IT APPEARS THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE METAL ALLOY THEY ARE USING. I CALLED CHRYSLER TO INFORM THEM THAT I WAS FILLING A COMPLAINT AS THEY DID NOT SEEM CONCERNED WITH CUSTOMER SAFETY ISSUE. I AM COVERED UNDER A LIMITED WARRANTY FOR MOST OF THE COST BUT THE ISSUE IS THE POSSIBLE LOSS OF TIRE PRESSURE WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 JEEP PATRIOT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE HEARD A NOISE IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO INFORMED HER THAT THE BALL JOINTS AND UPPER AND LOWER CONTROL ARMS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 42,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 JEEP PATRIOT 4X4. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THE VEHICLE STARTED LOSING POWER AND MADE A WHINING NOISE. THE CONTACT HAD TO COAST THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. WITH A LOW MILEAGE OF 37,325, BOTH ORIGINAL FRONT BALL JOINTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MAJORITY OF THE ACCUMULATED MILEAGE IS HIGHWAY DRIVING AND THERE IS ONLY ONE DRIVER. AFTER GRADUALLY NOTICING A ROCKY RIDE, I MADE A MECHANIC'S APPOINTMENT FOR A DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM. THE EXPERIENCED MECHANICS DIAGNOSED THE BALL JOINT DEFECT. THE MECHANIC CALLED THE JEEP DEALERSHIP TO PRICE JEEP PARTS AND WAS TOLD TWO COMPLETE ARMS WOULD HAVE TO BE PURCHASED TO COMPLETE THE BALL JOINT REPAIR. THE CONDITION OF THE BROKEN BALL JOINTS SHOWED EXCESSIVE PLAY. THIS IS MY SECOND JEEP VEHICLE; THE FIRST VEHICLE WAS A JEEP CHEROKEE 4X4 THAT DID NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH LOW MILEAGE. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER ON 05/17/12. THEY REPAIRED A SEAL AT A COST OF $ 212.93. THE CONSUMER DISCOVERED THAT HIS MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR HAD A DESIGN/ASSEMBLY FLAW THAT WAS ADDRESSED IN A CHRYSLER TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. ACCORDING TO THE BULLETIN, THE SUNROOF ASSEMBLY WAS NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY WHICH CAUSED WATER TO LEAK INSIDE. THE TSB GAVE SPECIFIC PROCEDURES ON HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM, AND GAVE AN ESTIMATE TIME OF 13 HOURS TO FIX. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER DID NOT FOLLOW THE TSB; THEY MERELY REPAIRED A SEAL. THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO THE DEALER. HOWEVER, THEY CLAIMED THE SUNROOF WAS NOT LEAKING. THE CONSUMER RETURNED A MONTH LATER, AND THE DEALER RE-SEALED THE ROOF SEAMS AND ADJUSTED THE LEVEL AND WEATHER STRIPPING. THE FOLLOWING YEAR, THE CONSUMER VISITED ANOTHER DEALER. THAT DEALER STATED THE DRAIN HOSE WAS NOT CONNECTED PROPERLY. THE CONSUMER STATED HE WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT THE VEHICLE OUT OF PARK. THE DEALER STATED A NEW COMPUTER WAS NEEDED, WHICH THEY INSTALLED AT A COST OF $ 1,405.32. THE CONSUMER DID SOME RESEARCH, AND DISCOVERED SOMEONE ELSE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND SUGGESTED, THE FIX WAS SIMPLY REPLACING A DAMAGED WIRE. THE CONSUMER STATED AT THE BOTTOM OF HIS INVOICE, THE DEALER REPLACED THE WIRE, AFTER DISCOVERING REPLACING THE COMPUTER DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM.
OUR 2009 JEEP PATRIOT HAS STALLED OUT OVER 35 TIMES SINCE OCTOBER OF 2011 AFTER MOVING FROM CALIFORNIA TO FLORIDA. THE ISSUE OF THE JEEP PATRIOT STALLING OUT ALWAYS OCCURS AT AN INTERSECTION WHILE WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TURN GREEN. THE STALLING OUT ISSUE IS MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR ON MOST, HUMID DAYS. HOWEVER, IT HAS OCCURRED ON DRY, HUMID DAYS AND ON A RARE OCCURRENCE, AT NIGHT. AT LESS THAN 370000 MILES, (JUST OUT OF WARRANTY) I NOTICED A CLUNKING AND RATTLING NOISE FROM THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE OF MY 2009 JEEP PATRIOT. AFTER A FEW DAYS IT SPREAD TO THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT. WHEN TAKING OFF OR BRAKING, ESPECIALLY AROUND 5-10 MPH, THE CLUNKING IS REALLY LOUD. I DROVE TO CHRYSLER IN WIESBADEN, GERMANY, AND INFORMED THEM THAT I BELIEVE IT WAS A LOWER BALL JOINT MAKING THE NOISE ON BOTH SIDES. LATER THEY CALLED ME AND SAID I WAS RIGHT, AND THEY DO NOT DO BALL JOINT REPAIR, THEY REPLACE THE CONTROL ARM. MAKES SENSE, I AM A MECHANIC, SAE CERTIFIED, WORKING AT A REPAIR FACILITY. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER ALSO SAID I NEEDED A CV BOOT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. COST OF A CONTROL ARM (PART ONLY-600 EURO!!. COST OF A CV BOOT, JUST A PIECE OF RUBBER, 201 EURO. PARTS ONLY. TOTAL COST WITH PARTS AND LABOR WOULD HAVE BEEN 1,060 EURO, ABOUT 1200 US DOLLARS FOR ONE SIDE ONLY. I DID NOT ALLOW THEM TO ROB ME, SO I ORDERED BOTH SIDES, CONTROL ARMS, CV BOOTS, INNER AND OUTER TIE RODS COMPLETE. I INSTALLED THEM WITH THE HELP OF MY SUPERVISOR USING MANUFACTURER'S DATA TO TORQUE ALL BOLTS AND NUTS. PARTS USED WERE CHRYSLER USA PARTS. I COULD NOT CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE OR ADD AIR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IF THE VALVE STEM BREAKS WHILE DRIVING, IT COULD RESULT IN QUICK LOSS OF TIRE PRESSURE. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF BLOGS/WEBSITES/FORUMS ALL REFERRING TO THIS SAME ERROR. AFTER HEAVY RAINS OR WATER EXPOSURE (E.G. CAR WASH) THE WATER LEAKS THROUGH THE INTERIOR DOME AND MAP LIGHTS. MANY SITES INDICATE THE MANUFACTURERS RELUCTANCE TO MAKE THE REPAIRS AND TREAT THE SITUATION AS THOUGH THEY HAVE NO PRIOR INDICATION OF PROBLEMS. WITH THOUSANDS OF WEBSITES AND SO MANY PEOPLE REPORTING THE DEALERS ARE RELUCTANT TO REPAIR THIS OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW, I AM LEFT WONDERING HOW MANY MANY PEOPLE HAVE TO REPORT THIS WATER LEAK TO THE MANUFACTURER BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE TO CORRECT IT (VOLUNTARY OR MANDATORY RECALL). THE AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSOR IS POSITIONED DIRECTLY IN THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. NOTHING PROTECTS THE UNIT (BUMPER, PLASIC COVER, ETC). A ROCK CAN EASILY STRIKE THE UNIT RESULTING IN DAMAGE. THIS COULD BE A FIRE HAZARD, AS THE UNIT CONTAINS FREON.
CHRYSLER IS INTENTIONALLY INFLATING TIRES TO 40 PSI TO PREVENT LOW PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT FROM COMING ON. I TOOK MY JEEP PATRIOT TO ROCHESTER HILLS (MI) CHRYSLER FOR A TIRE ROTATION I FOUND THE TIRES INFLATED TO 40 PSI WHEN I INQUIRED, THE SERVICE REP SAID IT WAS "TO PREVENT THE WARNING LIGHT FROM COMING ON WHEN IT GETS TO 0 DEGREES." 40 PSI IS 8 PSI OVER THE DOOR STICKER RECOMMENDED 32 PSI. IF YOU USE THE "12 DEGREES CHANGES THE PRESSURE BY 1 PSI" AS PER THE OPERATORS MANUAL AND YOU INFLATED THE TIRES AT THE RECORD HIGH AMBIENT OF 62 DEGREES AND CHECKED THEM AGAIN AT THE RECORD LOW OF -11 DEGREES (73 DIVIDED BY 12= 6 PSI) THE DEPARTURE FROM AVERAGE LOW 19 DEGREES TO RECORD LOW -11 EQUALS 2 PSI. ON 9/10/09 I TOOK IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP WITH 3,316 MILES ON IT FOR THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM OF WATER POURING FROM THE DOME LIGHT ALL OVER THE DASH, RADIO, AND ME AGAIN AFTER ANOTHER RAINY NIGHT. THEY REPLACED SUNROOF GLASS WEATHERSTRIPPING AND SAID IT WAS FIXED AGAIN. ON 11/17/10 AFTER A VERY LONG HARD RAIN I TOOK IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP WITH 18,706 MILES ON IT WITH WATER POURING FROM THE DOME LIGHT AND FROM THE REAR DOME AND FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR DOOR AREA. THE CARPET WAS SOAKED AND THE DOME LIGHT HAD STOPPED WORKING. THEY REPOSITIONED DRAIN TUBES AND REPLACED SUNROOF GLASS AND SEAL. IN THE PROCESS THEY BROKE OUR HEADLINER BUT AGREED TO ORDER ANOTHER ONE FOR US. ON 12/14/10 AFTER ANOTHER HARD RAIN I TOOK IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP WITH 19,604 MILES ON IT WITH WATER POURING FROM HEADLINER AT THE PASSENGER REAR DOOR AREA AND SOAKING THE CARPET. WHILE AT DEALERSHIP THEY INSTALLED A NEW HEADLINER WHICH DOES NOT FIT PROPERLY BY THE WINDSHIELD. THEY CLAIMED THAT THEY COULD NOT MAKE THE ROOF LEAK ON THAT VISIT. THEY LOST TWO OF THE PLUGS THAT WENT INTO THE HEADLINER, CAUSING US TO HAVE TO MAKE AN EXTRA TRIP TO THEIR SHOP. MY WIFE AND I HAVE REALLY BEEN PUT OUT WITH ALL THIS. CHRYSLER'S SOLUTION IS FOR US TO UPGRADE TO A NEW HIGHER PRICED CHRYSLER PRODUCT. I HOPE THAT ALL OF THE MOISTURE DOESN'T CREATE A MOLD HAZARD FOR OUR INFANT GRANDCHILDREN THAT RIDE IN THIS VEHICLE.
