NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2015 Kia Sorento. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Since the beginning of November, 2021, without incidence or prior warning, the airbag warning light came on when the vehicle is started and stays on the entire time the vehicle is on. The vehicle was brought to a KIA dealership on November 18th to diagnose the issue under extended 15 year warranty for two airbag recalls (one for clock spring and the other for ODS sensor). The diagnosis determined that the clock spring and ODS sensor were not causing the warning light to remain on, and the cause was a airbag code B1473, Driver Curtain Airbag Circuit Resistance High, and the dealership stated that it needed a driver side curtain airbag, estimated at $1,800.00, and not covered by warranty. Since this condition results in the airbag warning light to remain lit while the car is on and running, this causes a safety issue in that the driver does not know if the airbag will deploy if needed. Further, there is no way the driver would know if another airbag fault, for example, a front airbag issue, occurs, because the airbag light is already on. This condition poses a serious safety concern and should be addressed by the manufacturer.
UNKNOWN. Excessive shaking, engine light started to blink and car shut off.
I was driving down the highway going about 75-80 MPH, and my car started acting funny. No lights came on or smoking or anything to indicate something was wrong other then it acting funny. Pulled off the highway and my car died, had it towed (after waiting for awhile) got it towed to a AAA service center where they told me my engine was blown. Towed it back to Kansas (I was traveling on vacation when this happened and was 2.5 hours from home) to a kia dealership where now my car will not "throw the code" for the engine to be covered by warranty
My low beam lives are so .com at nite. It is very hard to see.I replaced with others. But they are dim and kept blowing out. Took to Kia dealer for problem. They said I needed to purchase there factory bulbs. I had them replace both. And still they are to dim to drive at night. It is a very bad safety issue. Especially if it is raining out.
My airbag came on in my 2015 KIA. It is a tension airbag, I believe. It won't go off. There are recalls in every other year but 2015. It is the same recall as the other years.
The paint on my Kia (pearl white) blew off from a portion of my car on a windy day. The car has been seen by the Kia dealership and we were referred to Kia consumer affairs. There were no prior signs of paint peeling in the area where it blew off prior to it blowing off.
10/2021 Drove to store (about 20 minutes). Shopped for about 1 hour. Started to leave parking area and enter ramp to highway when the engine stopped. Everything went off. No warning. No check engine light, no maintenance light, nothing. I was able to steer back into the parking area. Put car in park and waited about 4-5 minutes. Started the car (it started without a problem) and began driving in the parking lot. when it began hesitating and feeling as if it would stall again. there was a gas station next to the parking area. pulled in & filled tank (tank was 1/2 full) and just barely pulled into a parking spot in front of gas station convenience store. Got towed to our local garage. They changed the oil and checked external systems and thought it was working fine. When my husband picked the car up it was still hesitating and almost stalling on the way home. Next, took it to local Kia dealer. Same situation. Couldn't find anything, said it drove fine for them. Same thing happened to my husband on the way home. Stalling in traffic. Having to restart the car in an intersection. Very dangerous. Brought back to dealer and they said it would cost $600-1000 to diagnose. Then it might cost $5000 - $10,000 to fix (replace or rebuild the engine). I reached out to Kia Customer Service but they did not offer any solutions other than to talk to the dealership in question. We are at a stand-still and have not been able to drive the car since October 2021.
The contact owns a 2015 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving approximately 55-60 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. There were no warning lights illuminated. While at an independent mechanic the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, no further assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000.
Paint peeling off of the hood
Three days after getting my regular oil change , my engine started getting this loud knocking noise and I was not able to speed , I was coming into the freeway when my car suddenly got a loss of power , I checked my vehicle diagnostics and it wasn’t showing anything about the engine no warning or anything when I took it to get seen by a mechanic they told me I had to get my engine replaced
On October 6, 2021, I was driving my 2015 Kia Sorento to deliver work. I was driving through a mountain region when I heard a slight "ticking" noise coming from the engine. There was no safe place to pull over on the busy highway. There were mountains on each side of the highway no pull offs. There were lots of Semi trucks and Coal trucks driving fast on this highway. I kept driving looking for safe place to pull over. The ticking noise kept getting louder. There were no warning lights on the dashboard indicating any problem. Suddenly, the engine stopped. There was no power and no lights. It was all I could do to hold the steering wheel and coast the vehicle to a safe place. Finally, I found a safe pulloff. I coasted into it and called AAA. I waited three hours for AAA to show up. The AAA mechanic tried the start the engine with no success. He towed the vehicle to my home. I contacted a mechanic. The Ki would start and make loud knocking noises and then shut down again. The mechanic gave me an estimate for a new engine for $6,900 and told me he has seen this problem with this engine in this model Kia before. He said the manufacturer failed to debur the engines when they put the vehicles together causing metal fragments to filter through the engine causing engine failure. The mileage was approximately 151,000. I never received any recalls for the (KSDS) Knock Sensor Detection System.
hello my name is [XXX] owner of 2015 kia Sorrento on Sept 19 2021 my father in law and my wife and kids were pulling up on the drive way when they called me and said they smell gas odor from the car i said send me a pic since i was at work .I informed them turn the car off and get every body away be prepared to call fire dept. .when they sent me a video of the car I saw something leaking .so I rushed home to check the problem well it was definite fuel so I opened the hood and removed the plastic cover and started to look around everything looked in place but I noticed a clip was not in it's place the fuel line was out of place I reinserted the fuel line and pushed down on the clip. I wrapped some tape around the clip so it wouldn't come off again .I took it to the dealer on Tuesday for an explanation I was told that I needed a fuel line but they had no explanation on why this happened I ask when you guy's replaced the motor did you guy's break something ? .still waiting on that answer .the whole motor was taken out and replaced with a new one .this happened about a year and a half ago. I called kia to complain and make them aware of this issue .they called the dealer and told me they would get back to me between 24 and 48 hours today is the 28 of sept and still waiting I have called several times but they keep telling me that the dist manager hasn't replied to there emails .I told them this was a serious situation not just for me but others family's as well . I remember a while back ago kias were catching fire while driving this is a safety issue for all Americans . I have attached a news clipping to the pictures. The cars engine started knocking while we were in a family vacation. Before we started driving I checked the oil and it was at the acceptable level. We turned around and began to drive home. When we reached the town next to home the engine started knocking horribly and stalled and stopped running. We had the car towed to a repair shop. They told us that the engine is dead and we will need a new one. The car has 116000 miles on it. The warranty goes to 100000 miles. There is also a class action lawsuit against Kia for these defective engines. Apparently the cut off date to file a claim was august 1st Please help
The paint on this vehicle is aggressively peeling and I was told by a local Kia dealership to submit a complaint as it is a common problem with the snow white colored Kia Sorrento in this year. There is nothing I can do to stop the paint from continuing to peel, and it has continued to get worse over time.
The contact owns a 2015 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle overheated with the temperature gauge indicating that the engine was hot. The contact also stated that smoke was coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and was diagnosed with engine failure; the vehicle was no longer operable. The contact then received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V331000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) which she linked to the failure. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the issue and the contact was informed that the recall was not related to the engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed back to the residence. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.
2015 KIA Sorento Paint peeling & chipping away from door pillars, roof where windshield meets, both let & right front fenders, hood. The color is "Snow While Pearl". Started to norice small chipping around 2017 & in April 2019 a large piece peeled off the passenger side front pillar which I had repaired. Many of the chips were touched up but it continues to occur to this day.
Car jerks into 1st gear when stopping at a light and accelerating. Car gets stuck in 4th gear and will not accelerate until it reaches 4th gear speeds. Very dangerous to be trying to get up to highway speeds and car not wanting to accelerate beyond 10-20mph. Car is not safe to drive. Took to a Kia dealership and they said they couldn't replicate. I told them to drive the car more and they were able to replicate, however no check engine light has appeared so Kia dealership is telling me they can't do anything. They told me to keep driving it and bring it in if it gets worse. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle anywhere. Car has 67,000 miles on it and I am the second owner since 10,000 miles. I have done all maintenance that is required/needed all at the dealership.
Car is at 124,000 miles and well-maintained with all services done to date. However the Engine failed and will not run. No warning lights and suddenly stopped with loss of power and then will not start. Dealer says new engine will have to be put in and current engine is dead.
2015 Sorento has paint peeling and chipping due to air and weather. The peeling paint started December 2019. The condition has gotten worse. The chipping started this year.
My 2015 V6 Kia Sorento's engine seized absent any warning on 08/14/21. I was in the car with my dog and 3 young daughters at a stop light. The light turned green and I pushed the gas and the car did not move. It was frozen. I pushed it again and the entire car shut down. I police officer had to push our car out of the way after another motorist called 911. We were stuck. My auto shop said my car had extremely low and dirty oil, despite the fact I had just gotten a $90 synthetic oil change 2 weeks earlier. I had the car towed to Tasca Kia in Rhode Island and they told me the engine was covered under a lifetime warranty. They later called me and told me the recall was only related to V4 engines & denied any problem with V6's. I am learning MANY people have had this same problem. I called KIA Consumer Affairs and they denied the issue and refuse to help. My car was impeccably maintained and had 77,000 miles on it. The dealership told me to "scrap" the car. At the time of the engine seizure there were NO warning lights on and the temperature gauge was in the middle. KIA is refusing to accept responsibility.
Low beam headlights are dangerously too dim on my 2015 Kia Sorento LX. This is a well known reported issue by many owners. All drivers in my family had many close calls due to poor visibility when driving in the night. Yes I have changed lightbulbs several times, made sure that lenses and reflectors are clean and ground wire is not corroded. A simple search on the internet will tell you the extent of this problem. Many have reached to dealers and Kia but they are told -this is normal. Well it is absolutely NOT normal. It’s dangerous. feeling helpless. LX trim level don’t have fog lights too. Do something please.
almost all of my tire/brake lights are on my dash, dealership said its the speed sensors in my back tires. A week later (with those lights still on) my parking brake light came on while driving and started a dinging noise, parked turned it off and back on the noise had stopped but all lights were still on. dealership said speed sensors arent a serious issue to fix, however, my UVO diagnostics says its my ABS/EBS system. Ive already had a blown engine and now have a lifetime warranty but, they are picking and choosing whats covered and what isnt.
Paint on hood peeling. Warranty cover paint on roof recall. Car was painted at the same time why is the hood not covered?
The paint (white pearl) is bubbling and peeling. I currently have several rust spots that appeared where the paint peeled. I have researched this issue online and found that it is a common occurrence with this particular paint color on Kia cars for this time frame. Also, the Kia dealership that I have been to is aware that this is a problem as well. I recently had the unfortunate experience of my engine seizing up and this was replaced by the manufacturer and I feel this this paint problem is a manufacturer defect as well and should be repaired by the manufacturer.
The paint is blowing off.
The contact owns a 2015 Kia Sorento. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V331000 (Service brakes, Hydraulic). The contact stated that while attempting to turn on the vehicle, the vehicle would not start. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the next available appointment was in September. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to not drive the vehicle as it could catch on fire. The failure mileage was unavailable.
Intermittently and unpredictably, my V6 Sorrento just loses all power when trying to accelerate. This occurs when trying to accelerate from a stop or slow roll, but not when moving along at over, say, 20 mph. Obviously, this can be a very dangerous thing when trying to cross or pull out onto a street when there’s oncoming traffic. The car will move just enough to place it in the path of oncoming traffic and then nothing more until after I’ve released and depressed the accelerator enough times for it to finally decide go. The car has been to the dealer several times for this, and they’ve had no remedy. They said that they couldn’t do anything because they couldn’t duplicate the problem, which is no surprise because it’s totally unpredictable. I’ve had the car into the dealer for this enough times that they finally opened a case with Kia corporate, who also had no answers. My private mechanic found a service bulletin (online, and not from Kia) that said a hose in the fuel system was the issue. After I took the car back to the dealer yet again and told them about the bulletin, they supposedly checked the hose and said that it was okay, but they didn’t try replacing it. After all that I’d been through dealing with this, the dangerous situations it has put me in numerous times, and the fact that they had no answers, it seems to me that they should at least have tried replacing the hose. I’ve been dealing with this for years, and it's disconcerting and dangerous to not be able to trust the car. The car is a 2015 Sorrento SX V6 that I bought in July of 2017 with 31,094 miles on it, and I paid extra to have it “certified.” There is a thread on Kia-Forums.com where others have expressed having the same issue, also with no resolution. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2015 Kia Sorento. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 21V331000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The local dealer and the manufacturer were made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Headlights keep burning out. I've replaced the driver's side low-beam bulb seven times in the last year and the passenger side twice. Both are currently blown out again.
The contact owns a 2015 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 30-35 mph, he heard an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine before the vehicle inadvertently loss power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts and drove to his residence. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced due to rod bearing failure. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred while the vehicle was at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that they could not cover the repair of the vehicle as the service campaign for the failure had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while reversing out of a parking space and making a left turn, the contact heard an abnormal popping. The contact felt the vehicle was dragging something underneath the vehicle. The contact was able to pull over and restart the vehicle however, the engine was shaking and the contact saw that there was oil leaking on to the ground. The contact put the vehicle in neutral and had her son push the vehicle to her residence. The dealer was contacted but the service department was unavailable. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,050.
Hello. Prior to receiving the Recall letter around mid-July 2021, we had complained to the dealership about the engine humming after a ride and AC going on and off On July 17, I was scheduled to visit the dealership and take care of the Recall. Although, I was scheduled for an appointment, nothing happened! The dealership did not have the component required for the recall. We then left and insisted to return the following day and requested that a diagnostic be conducted in addition to the recall on July 23. Following the diagnostic, the dealership told us we needed a new engine. It was a big surprise and a shock that a car which was serviced twice a year at this dealership, had 104, 000 miles and was only 5 years old, had a complete failure. The dealership provided a quote for the repairs and never mentioned the recall or how it could be related to the diagnostic they had just made. Upon consulting with my insurance company, USAA, their adjuster was able to establish that the mechanical failure my car was facing was closely related to the recall. Based on the assessment made by USAA on August 4, 2021, we now know the dealership knew that failure to receive the recall caused the mechanical failure. The quote the dealership presented me included and was consistent with damages reported in the Recall. why don't they contact KIA, which is clearly liable, and want me to pay for a new engine? I need help to unpack this issue that has strained my resources, time and brought stress to the family car. A major risk associated with this overheating is fire. In light of this new information, I have contacted the dealership to discuss August 8, 2021. I also contacted KIA USA on July 28 prior to establishing the connection between the recall and the mechanical engine. No response. I need help as school is reopening. We need the car to go the work. No help has been provided. Dealership is Southwest Kia#451/ Lithia 39650 LBJ, Freeway South, Dallas, TX 75237, tel: 469-772-7252

Bought the vehicle used, from dealership had little over 91,000 miles on vehicle when purchased and purchased extended warranty as well, only had 11months, at little over 109 thousand miles on vehicle noticed white exhaust coming from tail pipe, was having to put oil in the vehicle 1-2 quarts a week. At one time, during a week, vehicle seemed to be stalling/slow to accelerate, engine sounded different, when got home, checked oil, the dip stick showed barely any oil. Put oil in the vehicle. NO warning light ever has came on about low oil, no warning light about engine has come on. I called local Kia dealership about the issue. Took 2 weeks to get appointment to take my Sorento in to get looked at. Once in the Kia dealership, service department manager says they did an oil consumption test on the engine. Multiple points of the inspection show engine failure. Dealership has more in depth description of what all has failed with the engine and oil consumption. Also had to provide the copies of when and where the vehicle had its regular maintenance such as oil changes done so it could be sent to the Extended warranty to approve engine replacement. My vehicle has been sitting at the dealership since July 20,2021 with no working being done, not even the safety recalls, because I was told engine is on back order. At time writing this it is August 19, 2021, so my sorento has been just sitting at Kia dealership with nothing being done. I have called once a week to Kia dealership, as they have yet to call me for updates. I reached out to Kia customer hotline, they were able to pull up the info on vehicle, find out exactly what part/engine was needed from dealership and shows it back ordered because the engine is coming from Korea to US, No actual ETA on when it will actually be sent/shipped to US to then be sent to dealership to put in my vehicle. Was told it could be months..unacceptable! was never sent any information on possible oil consumption problems or engine problems.
I was driving down the highway when the battery light came on and the engine died. I had the vehicle towed to Kia. The informed that the engine di not meet the recall requirements for replacement. The engines are obviously not well made and Kia needs to replace them when they fail. Thank you for your time.
Upon receiving Recall NOTICE , Vehicle Is A Fire Danger and I can Not Drive it.Living in the middle of the Forrest makes having this vehicle in this HIGH FIRE DANGER TOWN for 2 months put not only my family and home in danger but my entire FIRE VULNERABLE COMMUNITY AT RISK. The company headquarters or Dealership would not loan me a safe car nor remove this FIRE HAZARD from this community.
car re-experienced power loss and steering failure as previously reported to NHTSA ID: 11244200. this time we narrowly missed a tree and only the right passenger tire made an impact on side of the road/mountain. side curtain airbags deployed I have been in contact with Kia about the ongoing issues repairs were made previously under warranty. car was returned with engine power loss/ intermittent loss of power and unresponsive steering. my son required 2 stitches. and my military injuries have been aggravated. Car insurance claim started after the incident. the symptoms have been intermittent and dealership refused the car yesterday stating an open case with kia pending a buyback. car has been towed to a geico authorized repair facility for inspection and repair.
The contact owns a 2015 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the ABS, parking brake, and check engine warning lights illuminated, and the instrument cluster gauges were inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that a sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced. No further information was available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Delamination of SWP paint. Paint all over the front of the vehicle is peeling off.
Motor shuts down completely disabling the car electronically. I lose my brakes and my steering. In February 2020, I almost died driving the vehicle the car engine seized while driving and was replaced by KIA. I never received an itemized bill from Dealership they stole the rental from my private driveway to and stole $5,000 and my belongings from the vehicle. One June 29.2021 I almost died again driving the car. The New Engine shuts down and I lose breaks and steering and hit an animal trying to get off the road for safety since I no longer have breaks to my vehicle. The animal ripped off my undercarriage and dented my radiator. The car was smoking and the engine would start and when driven 50 feet keep shutting down and locking no breaks no power no steering becoming a hazard to myself and others. I have had no resolve with any dealership I have been to 4 different Kia dealerships and The Hyundai Certified Pre Owned Used Car Sales Dealer I purchased the car from. Instead of helping me and not placing my life and other lives in danger. I was threatened, antagonized, slandered, Defamed, and Had the police called to remove me because I refused to commit a crime and set my car on fire like the Dealership told me to do. I need help.
Low audible knocking in engine compartment that progressively became louder over the next 2 days. Engine stalled, flashing check engine light appeared. Vehicle is now un-drivable because of a P1326 code that is common in these Hyundai/Kia engines. Oil change was last done less than 2 months ago and an oil change plus facility. A campaign suggests this is a defect of the engine. There is a class action suite in favor of the owners of this and other vehicles with Hyundai/Kia engines.
Had engine replaced due to recall and now its doing the same thing as it was before the engine replacement by kia. I was going 65mph with cruise control active on the highway and all of a sudden it slowed me down to 20mph, check engine light blinking and went into limp mode. Will not go over 2000rpm and literally shifts like a standard when it is an automatic. This is such bull on having these issues, and doing the same crap as it did before the engine replacement which was done in March/April. I hope I dont have to keep driving it til it throws a rod like before in order to get it replaced and fixed. Kia is not a safe vehicle. I would like a rental.
Teenage son was driving kia late on highway the engine failed completely and stopped, going about 65mph, he was able to coast to side of road. He called me, we arrived 45 minutes later and engine was still burning hot to touch and consumed every drop of oil only 2000 miles after oil change, smoking. Took too mechanic said no oil leaks, and he was very lucky vehicle didnt create an engine fire.
On June 23rd my 2015 Kia Sorento with a 3.3 l engine V6 started making noises and I called a dealership and they asked if it sounded like knocking noises and I said no it sounded more like exhaust noise within an hour my car was losing power it was idling very rough and I took it into the dealership and they said that I need ed an entire new engine. However I had been in there on June 14th and they told me that my oil level was good and there were no leaks but on June 23rd suddenly I had 0 oil in my engine and they were claiming that it was my issue however it is The exact issue that Kia has had with this model and make but different engine. My car has 91000 miles on it I use full synthetic oil I had it changed 6000 miles ago it was fine then I have had the maintenance done on my car and there were 0 warning lights on my - for either oil or engine that is why I checked electrical I was told by the dealer that there Oil lights and engine lights often don't come on when they have a problem with the car. This is a huge safety issue and if it's starting to happen on the 3.3 engine this needs to be looked at immediately I know someone who owns the exact same year exact same engine and they have been dealing with this type of thing as well
The contact owns a 2015 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine. The vehicle loss motive power without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the oil level was inspected. The contact was informed that there was too much oil in the engine. The vehicle was then towed to Nucar Kia of Tilton (40 Tilton Rd lot a, Tilton, NH 03276) and diagnosed that the failure was related to a manufacturer's recall for the Occupant Detection System (ODS). The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The contact stated that the manufacturer declined to provide the recall repair since the contact had not gotten the manufacturer's recall for the ODS software update. The contact stated that the manufacturer’s recall letter stated that if the air bags functioned properly, there was no need to contact a Kia dealer for the recall repair. The failure mileage was 53,000. Consumer stated knock sensor recall was not received although dealer states otherwise. Lawsuit states without knock sensor Kia is not responsible for warranty coverage.
Large amounts of paint falling off of vehicle.
After engine replacement the car has a major loss of power that occurs intermittently. When accelerating the car will stutter and slow down I live In The mountains and there are a lot of blind corners that are safe to Navigate when the vehicle responds properly. I have almost been tboned by oncoming vehicles traveling at an excessive speed around those corners due to the loss of power the vehicle has suffered due to poor repairs and faulty engine
There is no incident or cause. The paint from the hood and top is coming off in big flakes.
Head light low beams keep burning out on a frequent basis. have to replace couple times a year. have tried led lamps but no after market led lamps seem to fit correctly. have not found any suitable led lamps to use. Halogens continue to burn out. sometimes one light goes out and then will come back on. but always will eventually burn out before they should.
