NOTICED A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR EMANATING FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR. ON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I DISCOVERED THAT THERE WAS FUEL POOLING UNDERNEATH THE DRIVERS SIDE BACK SEAT AND THAT TWO ELECTRICAL WIRES WERE SUBMERGED IN THE FUEL COLLECTING UNDERNEATH THE SEAT. THE FUEL ORIGINATED FROM A CRACK NEAR THE TOP OF THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. THIS IS A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD NOT TO MENTION THE SIGNIFICANT HEALTH ISSUES TO ALL PASSENGERS INCLUDING THE NINE YEAR OLD THAT IS TRANSPORTED IN THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED. *TR
AFTER FILLING THE GAS TANK OVER 3/4 FULL THERE IS A STRONG FUEL ODOR OUTSIDE THE CAR FROM THE DRIVER REAR WHEEL WELL AREA. THE ODOR IS STRONG ENOUGH THAT THE CAR CANNOT BE PARKED IN A CLOSED GARAGE. THE ODOR PERSISTS UNTIL THE FUEL LEVEL IS BACK BELOW 3/4 FULL. THE ISSUE REPEATS CONSISTENTLY EVERY TIME IT IS FILLED OVER 3/4 FULL SO I AM UNABLE TO EVER FILL THE TANK COMPLETELY. THE SERVICE CAMPAIGN #2008020001 FOR THE FUEL FILTER MODULE WAS PERFORMED AT PARK PLACE MERCEDES IN AUGUST 2008. SHORTLY AFTERWARD I STARTED GETTING SOME BAD FUEL ODOR INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CAR SO THE WORK WAS REDONE BE THE DEALER IN SEPTEMBER 2008. THE ISSUE REAPPEARED IN 2012 ABOUT 30K MILES LATER. *TR
STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. AFTER CONDUCTING INTERNET RESEARCH, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT MANY OTHER MERCEDES OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE AND HAVE LEARNED IT IS A FAULTY GAS TANK. *TR
REFERENCE NHTSA ACTION #PE12001 LAST YEAR I BEGAN TO SMELL GASOLINE VAPORS WHEN MY MB E500 GAS TANK IS 100% FULL. THE SMELL FINALLY GOES AWAY AFTER USING ABOUT 1/4 OF THE TANK. THE GASOLINE SMELL IS SO BAD, I NEED TO LEAVE MY GARAGE DOOR PARTIALLY OPEN TO HELP REMOVE THE SMELL. CURRENTLY THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF GASOLINE LEAKING ON THE GROUND, BUT THE SMELL OF GASOLINE IS VERY STRONG BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CAR. I'VE RESOLVED MYSELF TO ONLY FILLING UP MY TANK TO 75% FULL EACH TIME I RE-FUEL. I CANNOT FIND THE LEAK OR DETERMINE THE GERNAL AREA AROUND THE TANK WHICH IS LEAKING. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE GENERATION OF GAS VAPORS IN A CONFIRMED SPACE (INSIDE THE CAR OR GARAGE). *TR
MY CAR WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE INITIAL RECALL COMPLETED IN 2008. RECENTLY I NOTICED A STRONG GAS SMELL COMING FROM MY CAR AND HAS GOTTEN WORSE. I REMOVED THE REAR SEAT AND ACCESS COVER TO THE FUEL PUMP AND NOTICED A LARGE PUDDLE OF GAS ACCUMULATED/LEAKING AROUND THE FUEL PUMP SENDER UNIT AREA. ALSO THE PRODUCTION DATE OF THE PARTS WERE 2004, SO IT IS LIKELY THE DEALER DIDN'T DO ANYTHING BACK IN 2008. I NOW HAVE TO DRIVE WITH A CONSTANT SMELL OF GAS IN THE INTERIOR OF MY CAR AND CAN'T PARK IT IN THE GARAGE DUE TO RISK OF FIRE HAZARD. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, A GASOLINE ODOR WAS PRESENT INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND INSIDE THE GARAGE WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL SENDER UNIT WAS FAULTY AND REPLACED THE COMPONENT. THE FAILURE LATER RECURRED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE FUEL SENDING UNIT HAD MALFUNCTIONED A SECOND TIME, AND BOTH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT AND THE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
AFTER FILLING UP THE GAS TANK IN MY 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55 UP WITH GASOLINE, THERE ARE OVERWHELMING GASOLINE FUMES THAT ENGULF THE INTERIOR AND IS ALSO PREVALENT FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. WHEN ENTERING MY CLOSED GARAGE AFTER A GAS FILL UP, THE ENTIRE GARAGE IS ENGULFED BY THE VERY STRONG AND DISTINCT ODOR OF GASOLINE. EACH TIME I FILL UP MY E55 WITH GAS THERE IS AN EXTREMELY STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE FUMES. IT SEEMS TO GO AWAY AT ABOUT 3/4 TANK OR LESS. THE CAR IS PARKED IN THE GARAGE AT NIGHT AND WHEN I GO OUT THERE, THE ENTIRE GARAGE SMELLS OF GASOLINE. I FEEL THE ONLY THING TO DO IS TO NOT FILL THE CAR PAST THE 3/4 TANK LEVEL. I WILL BRING IT TO MERCEDES BUT FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD IT'S A DEFAULT ON THE CARS FUEL TANK COSTING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO REPAIR. I FILLED UP MY CAR WITH GAS ON FRIDAY, MAY 4, 2012 AND THEN WENT OUT. I PARKED MY CAR ON THE ROAD AND CAME BACK TO IT A COUPLE HOURS LATER. THERE WAS AN OVERPOWERING GASOLINE SMELL IN THE AREA AS I WALKED BY AND THOUGHT IT WAS ANOTHER CAR OR GAS WAS DUMPED ON THE ROAD. A COUPLE HOURS LATER I GOT INTO MY CAR AND DROVE HOME. THE GAS SMELL WAS STILL IN THE AREA WHEN I LEFT. I PARKED MY CAR AT HOME AND CHECKED IT ON SATURDAY MORNING. THE GAS SMELL WAS LESS SO I PARKED THE CAR ON THE ROAD THINKING IT WOULD BE SAFE. IN THE EVENING, I WALKED PAST MY CAR AND THE GAS SMELL WAS STRONG AGAIN. I CALLED MY LOCAL MERCEDES DEALER ON MONDAY MORNING REGARDING THE LEAK AND LET THEM KNOW ABOUT THE GAS SMELL AND THAT THE GAS GAUGE DROPPED A COUPLE OF BARS EVEN THOUGH I HAD ONLY DRIVE 13 MILES. I TOWED THE CAR IN AND THE SERVICE ADVISOR CALLED BACK WITH THE RESULT: THERE WAS A TEAR IN THE SEAL THAT IS A PART OF THE FUEL PUMP/SENDING UNIT. THEY CALLED BACK LATER TO TELL ME "DIAGNOSED THE RIGHT SIDE FUEL PUMP HAS A HOLE BURNT THROUGH HOUSING CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK OUT NEAR CONNECTOR HOUSING". THIS SITUATION IS VERY DISMAYING AND SCARY AS THE CAR HAD THE SAME FUEL PUMPS REPLACED UNDER A RECALL IN 2008. THE WORST THING IS THERE WAS A BURN IN THE FUEL PUMP HOUSING WHICH COULD HAVE ENDED IN A MUCH WORSE SITUATION WITH A FULL FUEL TANK... UPDATED 05/17/12 *BF UPDATED 06/06/12 *JS UPDATED 06/22/2012 *JS
ONE DAY I FILL MY TANK WITH GAS & WHEN I GET IN MY CAR I SMELL GASOLINE. I'M THINKING I STEPPED IN SOME GAS AT THE GAS STATION. I COME HOME & PARK. AS I EXIT MY CAR & COME AROUND THE PASSENGER SIDE I'M SMELLING GAS. FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS THE GAS SMELL CONTINUES TO SUFFOCATE ME. I GOT ON THE INTERNET & GOOGLED " I SMELL GAS IN MY 2005 E320". I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THAT LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THE NO-COST SOLUTION WAS NOT TO FILL YOUR TANK, ONLY HALFWAY BUT THEN YOUR CONSTANTLY STOPPING FOR GAS SMH. WHY DON'T THE DEALERS WANT TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?? IS THIS THE REPUTATION THAT MERCEDES WANTS TO CREATE?? *TR
ON A RIGHT TURN THE RACK AND PINION MECHANICAL PART FAILED. STEERING BECAME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, AND ALMOST CAUSED A MOVE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE MECHANICAL FAILURE CAUSED A BLOW BACK OF FLUID WITH METAL FILINGS INTO THE POWER STEERING PUMP. THE PUMP OVERFLOWED ONTO THE BELT. THE BELT THEN STRESSED THE WATER PUMP UNTIL IT TOO WAS BROKEN. $8,000 WORTH OF DAMAGE.
THE NHTSA COMPLAINT NUMBER IS PE12001 THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF OWNERS WITH THE PROBLEM OF FUEL SMELL INSIDE THE CAR RELATED TO A FAILING FUEL SENDING AND LEAKING FUEL TANK IN THE W211 MODEL E-CLASS MERCEDES BENZ (2003-2009) (SEE PROVIDED LINK BELOW). MY CAR IS A 2005 AND HAS BEGUN TO SMELL LIKE FUEL INSIDE THE CABIN. MERCEDES BENZ WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THESE FAILURES AND AS A RESULT, HAVE CREATED A DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR THE OWNERS OF THESE AUTOMOBILES. RESEARCH POINTS ME MARCH, 2008 EMISSIONS RECALL CONDUCTED BY MERCEDES BENZ (EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN # 2008-020001) WHICH INVOLVED POTENTIAL CRACKING OF THE FUEL FILTER MODULE IN VEHICLES EXPOSED TO HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES. *TR
THERE IS A FUEL LEAK AT OR NEAR THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY. MERCEDES STATES THIS IS NOT A WIDESPREAD ISSUE BUT AFTER FURTHER RESEARCH THIS IS HAPPENING WITH ALL E-CLASS MODELS BUILT IN 2005. THERE IS A GAS ODOR THAT PERMEATES THE CAR AND MERCEDES REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. THIS IS A VERY COSTLY ITEM AND I SPENT $95,000 ON MY CAR AND IT IS DEFECTIVE. *TR
I FILLED MY CAR UP WITH GAS THIS MORNING, AND WHEN I GOT HOME AND PARKED IN THE GARAGE, THERE WAS AN INCREDIBLY STRONG SMELL OF GAS INSIDE THE CAR. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT IT MAY BE THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WITH THE RECALL FROM 2008. I LIFTED UP THE REAR SEAT AND, SURE ENOUGH, THERE WAS GASOLINE FILLING THE WELL AROUND THE DRIVER'S SIDE FUEL SENDING UNIT. MY CAR HAD THE RECALL WORK COMPLETED IN 2008, SO I CALLED THE DEALER AND TOLD THEM THAT THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. I ASKED THEM IF THEY WERE GOING TO COVER IT SINCE THE RECALL PROBLEM OBVIOUSLY WASN'T FIXED, AND THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID, "ONCE RECALL WORK IS COMPLETED, THAT'S IT. IT'S CONSIDERED DONE, AND ANY FUTURE REPAIRS ARE THE OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY." THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. FUEL LEAKING INTO THE CABIN AND ALSO DOWN AROUND THE GAS TANK ONTO THE HOT EXHAUST IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD. IS IT GOING TO TAKE AN EXPLOSION AND SOMEBODY GETTING KILLED OR HURT FOR MERCEDES TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?! THIS NEEDS TO BE HANDLED BY MERCEDES IMMEDIATELY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY AND PROVIDED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 101,000.
HAD TO REPLACE MY GAS TANK TWICE DUE TO SMELL OF GAS PERMEATING THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. IT IS FINE NOW BUT HAD TO HAVE IT REPLACED TWICE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E 500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WERE GASOLINE FUMES INSIDE THE GARAGE WHERE VEHICLE WAS PARKED. THE CONTACT SOON DISCOVERED THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE VEHICLE AND ONTO THE FLOOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE FUEL TANK WAS NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, HOWEVER NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED TO AVOID REFUELING THE FUEL TANK TO CAPACITY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 147,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 160,000.
AFTER ADDING FUEL TO TANK, STRONG SMELL OF FUEL COMING FROM PASSENGER SIDE REAR WHEEL WELL. AS WELL VERY STRONG FUEL SMELL INSIDE CABIN. *TR
GETTING A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. NOTICED FUEL LEAKING UNDER THE BACK SEAT. IT SEEMS LIKE THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS AND THE ISSUE WAS FIXED BY MERCEDES. BUT THE SAME ISSUE IS BACK. *JS
I NOTICED A GAS SMELL IN MY CAR. I DIDN'T KNOW WHERE IT ORIGINATED FROM. I ARRANGED FOR MY LOCAL MERCEDES DEALERSHIP SERVICE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAD THE CAR IN THE SHOP TWICE. FIRST TIME THEY THOUGHT THEY FIXED IT AND UPON RETURNING HOME I NOTICED THE SMELL DIDN'T GO AWAY. IT TURNED OUT THEY ONLY FIXED PART OF THE PROBLEM AND I RETURNED THE CAR TO THE SHOP WHERE THEY DISCOVERED THE COMPLETE PROBLEM WITH GAS LEAKING UNDER THE REAR SEATS AND IT WAS PUDDLING ON TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. MY TOTAL COST TO REPAIR ISSUE WAS APPROX $1,200 SINCE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. OH, I WAS THE FIRST OWNER AND THE CAR WAS ALWAYS MAINTAINED BY THE DEALERSHIP. SHORTLY AFTER THE REPAIR WAS COMPLETED I WAS NOTIFIED THE DEALERSHIP WAS BEING SOLD AND WAS OFFER A LARGE DISCOUNT TO TRADE THIS CAR IN FOR A NEW MERCEDES S550. I BELIEVE I CAN OBTAIN A COPY OF THE BILLS AS IT IS A LITTLE OVER A YEAR SINCE THE REPAIRS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. I DO NOT KNOW IF THEY DELETE ALL PREVIOUS REPAIRS WORK ORDERS IF I SOLD THE CAR....HUM? *TR
OUR CAR WAS PURCHASED OFF LEASE AROUND NOVEMBER 2008. IT HAD 47,000 MILES ON IT WHEN WE PURCHASED IT. WE NOTICED THAT WHEN WE FILLED THE GAS TANK UP THE GAS FUMES WERE STRONG IN THE GARAGE SINCE THE TIME WE PURCHASED THE CAR. IN MARCH 2012 THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHILE ON A TRIP SHORTLY AFTER THAT GAS TANK WAS FILLED. I READ THE MANUAL AND STOPPED BY AN AUTO ZONE AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO THE GAS CAP BEING LOOSE AND THE FUEL TANK LOOSING PRESSURE AND THEY CLEARED THE WARNING. THE LIGHT HAS COME ON A FEW TIMES SINCE THEN AND I HAVE HAD IT CLEARED TWICE AT AUTO ZONE SINCE I DID NOT THINK THERE WAS A BIG PROBLEM AND I WAS IN BETWEEN SERVICES. WITHIN THE LAST SIX MONTHS I HAVE HAD IT THE MERCEDES SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND THEY TOLD ME THEY DID NOT KNOW WHY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG. YESTERDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2013, I WENT TO A MERCEDES BENZ SPECIALISTS, LOCAL MECHANIC THAT ONLY WORKS ON MERCEDES AND USES MERCEDES PARTS, FOR AN ANNUAL OIL CHANGE AND CHECKUP AND ASKED HIM TO CHECK OUT THE PROBLEM THAT THE MERCEDES SERVICE DEPARTMENT DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG. HE TESTED THE FUEL TANK USING A SYSTEM TO DETECT LEAKS AND NOTED THAT THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK HAD A CRACK AND I NEED TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK AND IT WOULD COST $2,082. OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS I JUST FILLED THE TANK TO HALF OR THREE FOURTHS SO IT WOULD NOT EMIT FUMES, HOWEVER, I FILLED IT UP FOR A TRIP LAST WEEK AND YOU COULD SMELL THE FUMES BADLY IN THE CAR. OUR CAR HAS ABOUT 134000 MILES ON IT NOW. *JS

ADDITIONALLY, ACCORDING TO MY MERCEDES BENZ SERVICE ADVISOR AND A CARFAX REPORT, THE FIRST OWNER (I AM THE SECOND OWNER) HAD THE FUEL SYSTEM REPAIRED WHEN THE CAR HAD 20,000 MILES ON IT. GAS IS LEAKING UNDER THE BACK SEAT AND GARAGE IS FILLED WITH GAS SMELL. WHEN DEALER OPENED THE SEAT, POOL OF GAS WAS FOUND. DEALER REPLACED SENDER UNITS AND THE ISSUE NEVER RESOLVED. NOW THE DEALER IS SAYING TANK IS LEAKING AND MERCEDES REFUSE TO PAY OR ASSIST FOR THE REPAIR. IT IS DEFECT FUEL ASSEMBLY AND VERY HIGH SAFETY ISSUE. WE SITTING ON TOP OF THE LEAKING GASOLINE AND COMPANY REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. *TR

I BOUGHT THE CAR, GREAT CAR BUT CAR SMELLED OF GASOLINE BADLY, LIFTED THE BACK SEAT AND WAS DRENCHED IN GASOLINE, BROUGHT TO THE DEALER IN WEST PALM BEACH, THEY CHANGED OUT A BUNCH OF PARTS OVER 2500$ IN REPAIRS, AND ALL WAS WELL, THANK GOD BECAUSE A HAVE AN INFANT AND HE SHOULD NOT BE SUBJECTED TO THOSE AWFUL DANGEROUS FUMES, ALL WAS GOOD, THEN A FEW MONTHS LATER IN NOVEMBER 2012 HAPPENING AGAIN AND BOTH FUEL SENDERS HAD TO BE CHANGED AGAIN, THANK GOD WAS UNDER DEALERSHIP WARRANTY, MERCEDES NEEDS TO STEP UP AND SEE THAT THIS IS A DEFECT FROM THE MANUFACTURER. *TR
AFTER FILLING UP THE GAS TANK, I NOTICED EXTREMELY STRONG GASOLINE FUMES EMANATING FROM THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR. AFTER DOING SOME INTERNET RESEARCH, I LEARNED OF THIS COMMON PROBLEM AND WANTED TO MAKE SURE TO NOTE THAT THESE DANGEROUS FUMES WHICH OVERWHELMED ME WHEN I STORED THE CAR IN A GARAGE OVERNIGHT. I DID NOT NOTICE ANY FUEL DRIPPING OUT OF THE CAR ONTO THE GROUND BUT THAT'S NOT TO SAY THERE WASN'T ANY WHEN I FILLED UP. AFTER FILLING THE FUEL TANK COMPLETELY FULL, I NOTICED A STRONG SMELL OF FUEL. I REMOVED THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT AND ALSO REMOVED THE TWO PANELS THAT COVER THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. ONCE I REMOVED THE TWO PANELS I SAW A PUDDLE OF FUEL SITTING IN A LOW SPOT ON TOP OF THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. THIS CONCERNS ME AS IT IS PUDDLING AND VAPOR IS BEING PUT INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT OF THE VEHICLE AS WELL AS THE ATMOSPHERE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE MULTIPLE LEAKS IN THE FUEL TANK AND THE FUEL TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS FILLED 100% THERE IS A VERY STRONG FUEL ODOR, WHICH CAN BE SMELLED IN THE OUTDOORS BUT IS EXTREMELY STRONG WHEN PARKED IN THE ATTACHED GARAGE. THIS ODOR IS SO STRONG THAT IT ENTERS THE HOUSE, AND WE HAVE TO LEAVE THE GARAGE DOOR WIDE OPEN FOR FEAR OF A SPARK CAUSING A FIRE. IF ONE LOOKS UNDER THE CAR THERE IS NO DRIPPING. THE ODOR DOES NOT GO AWAY UNTIL THE FUEL TANK IS NO LONGER COMPLETELY FULL. THE FUEL LEAK STOPS AFTER WE ARE DOWN A COUPLE GALLONS FROM COMPLETELY FULL FUEL TANK. I HAVE PULLED THE BACK SEAT AND SEEN THAT THE THERE IS GASOLINE POOLING AROUND THE FUEL PUMP (FUEL DELIVERY MODULE). I AM CONCERNED THAT A REAR END COLLISION WOULD CAUSE THE LEAKING FUEL TO COMBUST. *TR

EVERY TIME THE CAR IS FILLED UP WITH GAS, THERE IS A VERY STRONG GAS SMELL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. REMOVED THE BACK SEAT AND THE PLATE THAT COVERS THE FUEL SENDING UNIT AND GAS PUDDLES UP AROUND THE SEAL OF THE SENDING UNIT. HAD SEAL REPLACED, BUT THAT ONLY HELPED FOR ABOUT A MONTH. IT ONLY DOES THIS WHEN TANK IS FULL (PROBABLY DUE TO THE PRESSURE IN THE TANK). THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE AND I TRY TO AVOID FILLING TANK COMPLETELY, BUT SOMETIMES IT'S HARD TO TELL WHEN IT'S GETTING CLOSE TO FULL. THE PROBLEM ONLY SEEMS TO OCCUR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE CAR, EVEN THOUGH THERE IS ALSO A SENDING UNIT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. *TR
AFTER COMING TO A STOP AT AN ENTRANCE TO A BUSY HIGHWAY, MY 2005 E500 JUST BARELY MOVED ONTO THE BUSY HIGHWAY, AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE TRANSMISSION WAS "STUCK" IN ONE OF THE HIGHER GEARS. I PULLED THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER, TURNED OFF THE IGNITION, AND RESTARTED IT. AFTER RESTARTING, IT WORKED NORMALLY. THIS HAS OCCURRED NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE THEN. THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME SORT OF ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH THIS TRANSMISSION. THIS IS SEEMS PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS WHEN TRYING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC FROM A STOP, OR CROSSING A BUSY INTERSECTION. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 63,400. I'VE HAD THE SMELL OF FUEL IN MY E320 BASE MODEL FOR ABOUT 2-3 MONTHS NOW. I DIDN'T PAY IT MUCH ATTENTION UNTIL NOW (3/31/2012) WHEN I DID A LITTLE RESEARCH FOR MYSELF AND FOUND A LEAK FROM THE FUEL PUMP TO FUEL LINE HOUSING. I DID NOT TAKE PICTURES BUT THE HOSE LINE CONNECTION TO THE PUMP WAS CRACKED AND UPON TAKING HOSE OFF PUMP HOUSING, THE HOUSING CONNECTION SNAPPED COMPLETELY OFF. IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO FIND ANOTHER FUEL PUMP NOW BECAUSE VEHICLE IS DISABLE. *TR
I HAD/HAVE A STRONG FUEL SMELL AFTER FILLING MY TANK. I REPORTED THIS TO THE LOCAL MERCEDES DEALER, MODESTO EUROPEAN, BACK IN EARLY 2012, BUT WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE WAS PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD SO TO INVESTIGE WOULD COST $129/HOUR (I THINK THAT WAS THE NUMBER) AND WOULD T TAKE UP TO 4 HOURS TO DIAGONSE; AND THEN I WOULD STILL BE LIABLE FOR ANY NEEDED REPAIRS. SINCE I DID NOT SEE GAS LEAKING, I PUT OFF THE INSPECTION THINKING I WOULD AS SOME POINT SEE GAS LEAKING IF IT WERE A MAJOR PROBLEM. I STILL GET THE GAS SMELL EVERY TIME I FILL UP, BUT NEVER SAW GAS ON MY GARAGE FLOOR OR ELSEWHERE. THIS WEEK I LEARNED FROM A REPAIR SHOP WHICH IS NOT A MERCEDES DEALER THAT THIS IS A VERY TYPICAL PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS AND IT WAS SUGGESTED I CONTACT YOU TO SEE IF THERE HAS BEEN ANY NTSA ACTION ON THIS PROBLEM. *TR
DRIVER APPLIED BRAKES GOING DOWNHILL IN PREPARATION TO STOP AT AN INTERSECTION. RED BRAKE LIGHT APPEARED ON DASH AND BRAKE PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR WITHOUT SLOWING DOWN. DRIVER VEERED OFF ROAD TO AVOID ACCIDENT AND FULLY APPLIED PARKING BRAKE. CAR WAS PARKED AND TURNED OFF. WHEN CAR WAS TURNED BACK ON AGAIN, RED LIGHT IN DASH WAS GONE, NO WARNINGS EXISTED, AND BRAKES WORKED PERFECTLY. WAS TAKEN TO A SHOP AND NO PROBLEM WAS FOUND. SAME SITUATION OCCURRED AGAIN NOVEMBER 2013 WITH 115,000 MILES (APPROXIMATELY). SLOWLY DROVE VEHICLE TO REPAIR SHOP. REPUTABLE MERCEDES SPECIALTY MECHANIC FOUND CODES THAT SAID SBC HAD ISSUES, BUT CODES WERE CLEARED IN ORDER TO DO OTHER DIAGNOSTICS. SINCE MECHANIC WAS NOT A DEALER, HE SUGGESTED CAR BE TAKEN TO DEALER FOR "EXTENDED WARRANTY REPAIR" SINCE THIS KNOWN ISSUE WAS NEVER ESTABLISHED AS A RECALL. SKYLAND AUTOMOTIVE IN ASHEVILLE, NC STATED NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR AND WOULD NOT PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION STATING BRAKE ARE OK, BUT DID CHARGE $89 TO LOOK FOR CODES WHICH DID NOT EXISTS. WE ASKED TO BE CONTACTED BY A MERCEDES REP TO REVIEW OUR CASE, BUT WERE DENIED AND TOLD THIS WOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM IF WE HAD MAINTENANCE DONE AT SKYLAND. AT THIS TIME, THE BRAKES ARE WORKING AGAIN AS THEY HAVE DONE BEFORE. IF THE BRAKES GO OUT AGAIN AND THE CAR AND OCCUPANTS ARE NOT DAMAGED, THE THEORY IS THERE WILL BE A FAULT CODE SUCH THAT THE DEALER KNOWS WHAT TO REPLACE. THE EXTENDED WARRANTY IS SET TO EXPIRE IN 3 MONTHS. AFTER THAT TIME, THE COST TO REPAIR WILL BE APPROXIMATELY $1800. LOSS OF BRAKES AT RANDOM, IN MY OPINION, DESERVES TO BE REPAIRED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. DEALERSHIP WAS CLEARLY INFORMED THAT THE BACKUP HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM DID NOT WORK IN EITHER OF THESE CASES AND TO STOP THE CAR REQUIRED THE USE OF THE PARKING BRAKE! *TR
ABOUT A YEAR AGO, WE NOTICED A MILD GAS SMELL AFTER FILL UP. THE SMELL USED TO GO AWAY IN A MATTER OF HOURS, SO WE ATTRIBUTED THAT TO POSSIBLE SPILL DURING REFILL. GRADUALLY, SMELL BECAME STRONGER AND LASTED LONGER. EARLY JANUARY 2013, AFTER A RECENT FILL UP, WE STORED THE CAR IN GARAGE FOR 2 WEEKS WHILE USING OUR OTHER VEHICLE. THE SMELL BECAME SO STRONG, IT WAS FELT IN LAUNDRY ROOM NEXT TO THE GARAGE. SMELL WOULDN'T GO AWAY SO WE SUSPECTED A GAS LEAK. UPON EXAMINATION BY DEALER, IT WAS FOUND THAT THERE IS SIGNIFICANT GAS LEAK UNDER REAR SEAT (PASSENGER SIDE). THE LEAK WAS FROM A DEFECTIVE FUEL FILTER AND SENDER UNIT. WE FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON DEFECT WITH 2005 E320 CLASS CARS. INDEED MANUFACTURER HAD ISSUED A RECALL IN 2008 COVERING LEAKING FUEL FILTERS. THE RECALL INCLUDED 2005 E320 BUT APPARENTLY DID NOT INCLUDE MY VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY/HEALTH HAZARD THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *TR

THERE IS A HUGE FUEL LEAK COMING FROM UNDERNEATH MY VEHICLE. IT IS LOCATED UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR PASSENGER SEAT. I LIFTED UP THE SEAT AND IT IS COVERED IN FUEL EMISSIONS.
AFTER FILLING UP THE VEHICLE AND DRIVING FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME ,I PARKED THE CAR IN MY GARAGE . WHEN I CAME BACK TO THE CAR THE WHOLE GARAGE SMELLED LIKE GASOLINE. FUEL TANK LEAKS FUEL AT THE TOP WHEN TANK IS FILLED HIGHER THAN 3/4THS. THERE ARE SEVERAL HUNDRED REPORTS OF THIS ON THESE MODELS ON THE INTERNET. THE ISSUE APPEARS TO START OCCURRING AROUND 90-100K MILES. SINCE MERCEDES ARE MADE TO GO MANY MILES THIS CAN BE AN ISSUE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. I HAVE HAD IT AT A MECHANIC HE TOLD ME THAT I SHOULD REPORT THIS TO MERCEDES AS IT APPEARS THAT THE PLASTIC FUEL TANK HAS A FLAW IN IT. WE HAVE NOT FIXED THE PROBLEM AS WE WANT IT TO BE INVESTIGATED. WHEN 2005 E320 HAS GAS TANK FILLED, THERE IS AN OVERWHELMING FUEL ODOR IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE FUMES DISSIPATE WHEN THE FUEL LEVEL DECREASES FROM FULL TO 3/4. CAR WAS TAKEN TO MERCEDES DEALER FOR SERVICE AND THIS PROBLEM WAS LISTED FOR THE REPAIR PERSON. THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM. YEAR AND A HALF LATER, I AGAIN ASKED MERCEDES DEALER TO LOOK AT THIS ISSUE. THEY SAID IT WAS A LEAK IN THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WHICH IS CONNECTED INTO THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK. AT A COST OF $800, THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS REPLACED. I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE AND THE FUEL SMELL INSIDE THE CAR WAS SO STRONG IT MADE ME AND TWO CLIENTS NAUSEOUS WITH SEVERE HEADACHES THE FOLLOWING DAY. I RETURNED THE CAR TO THE DEALER, AND UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, THEY NOW TELL ME THE FUEL SENDING UNIT WAS LEAKING BUT THE GAS TANK ITSELF ALSO IS CRACKED AND LEAKING WHICH NEEDS TO BE REPLACED FOR ANOTHER $2,000. I OPENED A COMPLAINT WITH MERCEDES BENZ USA. AFTER THEIR SHAM OF AN INVESTIGATION, THEY SAID THEY WOULD OFFER ME A 50% DISCOUNT ON THE FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT OR ASSISTANCE ON THE PURCHASE OF A NEW VEHICLE. THE CAR NOW HAS 118,000 MILES AND IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO MAKE THE REPAIRS. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO REPLACE A GAS TANK ON A VEHICLE OF ANY AGE, AND I AM AFRAID OF CONTINUED SAFETY PROBLEMS FROM POOR ENGINEERING DESIGN WITH THE REPLACEMENT PARTS IF THE CAR IS INVOLVED IN ANY ACCIDENT. *TR
IN DECEMBER 2011 I DETECTED A STRONG FUEL SMELL FROM INSIDE THE CABIN OF THE CAR. THE SMELL WAS SO STRONG THAT I FELT IT WAS IN MY BEST INTEREST TO DRIVE TO THE NEAREST EUROPEAN CAR SERVICE CENTER, SINCE THE NEAREST MB SERVICE CENTER IS 45 MINUTES AWAY. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE CHARCOAL FILTERS UNDER THE REAR SEAT WERE LEAKING, CAUSING FUEL TO POOL. WE CALLED THE MB SERVICE CENTER AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE CHARCOAL FILTERS BUT IT WAS CLOSED. I WAS INCREDULOUS THAT SUCH A SERIOUS PROBLEM (ANY LEAKING FUEL ISSUE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED SERIOUS) WAS COMPLETELY IGNORED BY MB AND I WAS ON MY OWN. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PAY TO HAVE THE FILTERS REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE OUT OF FEAR OF MY CAR EXPLODING. NOW, JULY 2012, THE CHARCOAL FILTER VALVE IS LEAKING AND CAUSING ANOTHER GAS ODOR. SO I STARTED RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE AND WAS SURPRISED TO FIND A GREAT NUMBER OF OTHER CONSUMERS FACING THE SAME ISSUES AS MYSELF. EVERYONE EXPERIENCING THESE ISSUES AFTER THE RECALL WAS CLOSED SEEMS TO BE IN THE SAME BOAT, MB REFUSING TO ISSUE ANOTHER RECALL AND/OR COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIRS. I ALSO NOTICED FUEL LEAKING UNDER THE VEHICLE AS WELL. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT WAS RECALLED BY MERCEDES ONCE BEFORE. THEY FIXED IT BACK IN 2007 UNDER A RECALL WHEN IT WAS OWNED BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER. I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE APRIL 2011 AND THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN IN MY OWNERSHIP AROUND THE APPROXIMATE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2011. I HAVE ALREADY TAKEN IT TO A SHOP AND HAVE PAID THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO HAVE THIS ISSUE ADDRESSED BUT ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC THE FUEL SYSTEM IS FAILING IN MULTIPLE SPOTS. NOW THE VEHICLE SITS. PLEASE HELP ME GET MERCEDES TO FIX THIS VERY COSTLY AND POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING ISSUE RESOLVED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND INTEREST IN MY FAMILIES AND MY SAFETY.
