TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 25 MPH AND ATTEMPTING A RIGHT TURN WHEN THE ENGINE STARTED TO EMIT A NOISE AND THE RPMS INCREASED EXCESSIVELY. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED TO THE CURB AND THE CONTACT TURNED THE ENGINE OFF FOR ABOUT TEN SECONDS. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AND RETURNED TO NORMAL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE WITHIN SIX MONTHS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER OR A MECHANIC FOR REPAIRS OR INSPECTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E55. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED MULTIPLE TIMES BY THE DEALER FOR A MANUFACTURER'S VOLUNTARY RECALL FOR A DEFECTIVE FUEL SENDER UNIT. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL LEAKING FUEL AND THE SMELL OF FUEL CONTINUED TO EMIT FROM INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AFTER THE REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO BACK TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 1114,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES-BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EMITTED A STRONG FUEL ODOR WHILE THE FUEL TANK WAS FILLED. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THE FUEL TANK HAD LEAKED AND FUEL ENTERED THE VEHICLE AND COLLECTED IN THE REAR DRIVER SIDE FLOOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FUEL GASKET HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE 100,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING, THE SMELL OF FUEL WAS POTENT INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE FUEL LEVER SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 103,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A RESIDENTIAL GARAGE, AN EXTREMELY OVERPOWERING GASOLINE FUEL ODOR EMITTED CONTINUOUSLY FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT DID NOT DETECT A FUEL LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE BOTH FUEL TANK GASKETS WERE REPLACED. THE FAILURE PERSISTED AFTER THE REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE FUEL GAUGE DISPLAYED ERRONEOUS READINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE FUEL INJECTION AND FUEL GAUGE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER ONLY DRIVING ONE BLOCK THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD DISPLAY ONE MILE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
AFTER PICKING UP THE KIDS FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL AND DRIVING HOME IT HAPPENED, AS I APPROACHED A STOP SIGN AND DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH NO RESISTANCE AND NO STOPPING POWER, RED LIGHTS CAME ON THE THE DASH TELLING ME I HAD A BRAKE FAILURE AND BRAKING POWER IS REDUCED!. WHAT A SCARY MOMENT! I WAS ABLE TO LET THE CAR ROLL TO A STOP SAFELY. AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN ALL BRAKING POWER WAS RESTORED AND WAS ONCE AGAIN FUNCTIONAL. TOOK THE CAR INTO A MERCEDES BENZ DEALER THE NEXT DAY AND WAS TOLD THE ENTIRE BRAKE OPERATING UNIT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $2,200.00. I FIND THIS VERY HARD TO ACCEPT THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM ON A PROPERLY MAINTAINED VEHICLE CAN SUDDENLY FAIL WITHOUT WARNING AND RESETS ITSELF AFTER A RESTART. THE DEALER OFFERED NO OTHER EXPLANATION, BUT THINGS HAPPEN. *TT
I STARTED SMELLING A STONG GASOLINE SMELL AFTER FILLING THE GAS TANK ON THIS CAR. AFTER THE CAR WAS DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 50 MILES, THE SMELL WOULD GO AWAY. TODAY, MAY 16, 2012, I TOOK THE CAR TO A DENVER MECEDES DEALER TO ASK ABOUT THE PROBLEM. DEALER REPORTED THAT THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE FUEL TANK, NEXT TO THE TOP LEFT FUEL PUMP. THIS SEEMS TO BE THE SAME PROBLEM RELATED TO YOUR INVESTIGATION ON PE 12-001. THE DEALER ASKED FOR $2000 TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM. I AM WAITING FOR THE REPAIR PENDING THIS INVESTIGATION AND MERCEDES RESPONSE.
STRONG ODOR OF GAS IN THE CABIN, SOAKED REAR UNDER-SEAT PAD, REAR SEAT SOAKED WITH FUMES. *TR
FUEL SMELL IN CABIN OF VEHICLE AND FUEL SOAKED CHARCOAL CANISTER. MERCEDES BENZ IS NOT ABLE TO CORRECT PROBLEM. PRESSURED CHECKED TANK AND REPLACED CHARCOAL CANISTER, PROBLEM STILL NOT RESOLVED. *KB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E320. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS AN OVERPOWERING GASOLINE SMELL INSIDE THE VEHICLE, INTERFERING WITH THE CONTACTS ABILITY TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING ABNORMALLY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE LEAKING FUEL TANK COULD RESULT IN A FIRE AND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 41,190.
2005 MERCEDES E55. VEHICLE HAS A STRONG GAS SMELL. FOUND GASKETS AT FUEL SENDERS LEAKING AGAIN. THERE WAS A RECALL TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE IN 2008 SEEMS LIKE IT DIDN'T FIX THE ISSUE. *KB
START DATE IS APPROXIMATE. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR AROUND 4 YEARS. CAR HAS SMELLED STRONGLY OF GASOLINE WHEN FILLED OVER 3/4 A TANK. ALSO, WHEN FILLED OVER 3/4 A TANK GAS CAN BE SEEN DRIPPING DOWN BESIDE DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE. HAVE SPENT SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS TRYING TO GET ISSUE FIXED UNTIL I HEARD ABOUT THE INVESTIGATION. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT IS CONTINUOUSLY ON DUE TO A "FUEL SYSTEM LEAK." WHO KNOWS HOW MUCH THIS HAS COST ME IN WASTED GAS, AND I'M CONSTANTLY AFRAID SOMEONE IS GOING TO LIGHT A CIGARETTE NEXT TO MY CAR AND BLOW THEMSELVES UP. *TR
ON JUNE 9, 2011, THERE WAS A DETECTABLE FUEL SMELL ON THE INTERIOR AND IMMEDIATELY SURROUNDING THE EXTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. ON JUNE 10, 2011, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MERCEDES-BENZ OF LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA. THE MERCEDES TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS A BAD FUEL SENDER UNIT. MERCEDES FAILED TO MENTION AT THE TIME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE WHICH THEY DESCRIBED AS "MECHANICAL STRESS ON THE FUEL FILTER MODULE" (VOLUNTARY EMISSIONS RECALL CAMPAIGN #2008-020001). PARTS AND LABOR TO REPLACE THE FUEL SENDER UNITS COST $1,620.20. THIS REPAIR SEEMED TO HAVE CORRECTED THE ISSUE TEMPORARILY. ON OCTOBER 17, 2013 I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO MERCEDES-BENZ OF FOOTHILL RANCH, CA FOR ROUTINE SERVICE. THE TECHNICIAN AGAIN IDENTIFIED THE SMELL OF GAS IN THE VEHICLE AND DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A CRACK IN THE FUEL SENDER UNIT. THE MERCEDES SERVICE ASSOCIATED QUOTED APPROXIMATELY $1,600 TO AGAIN REPAIR THIS ISSUE. THIS ISSUE IS CLEARLY A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE DESIGN AND MERCEDES CONTINUES TO CHARGE ITS CUSTOMERS TO REPAIR THIS FLAW. I'M CONCERNED FOR MY HEALTH AND THE HEALTH OF MY WIFE AND TWO CHILDREN, AGES 1 AND 4. INHALING GASOLINE, ESPECIALLY THE BENZENE COMPONENT IS KNOWN TO INCREASE THE RISK OF DEVELOPING CANCER IN HUMANS. I'M ALSO CONCERNED THAT THE VEHICLE MAY BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO EXPLODING IF THIS ISSUE IS NOT RESOLVED. YOUR HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. *TR
WHEN THE STRONG VAPOR OF GASOLINE FIRST OCCURRED, I PROMPTLY TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER EXAMINATION, THE VEHICLE REQUIRED A NEW GASKET ON THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. THIS CORRECTED THE STRONG FUEL VAPOR AFTER FILL-UP UNTIL NOW. IN JUNE 2013, WITH APPROXIMATELY 73,000 MILES, THE STRONG VAPOR REAPPEARED BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION BY MERCEDES BENZ CORAL GABLES, I WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE REQUIRED A NEW FUEL TANK, AS THERE IS A SMALL CRACK AT THE TOP OF THE TANK. THE TANK WAS NOT DROPPED, BUT RATHER, THE DIAGNOSIS WAS BASED ON PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. AN OCCURRENCE THEY HAVE SEEN IN THE AMG CLASS AND APPEARING AS WELL WITH THE E CLASS. I ELECTED NOT TO FIX THE PROBLEM AS I WAS INFORMED THAT AS LONG AS "YOU DON'T FILL UP ALL THE WAY" IT SHOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM. I SUBSEQUENTLY CALLED TWO ADDITIONAL MB DEALERS AND THE SERVICE WRITER AT EACH BUSINESS SAID THE SAME THING. I WANT TO MAKE A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH THE NHTSA SO THAT MY VEHICLE IS LOGGED WITH THE MANY OTHERS AND ADDRESSED BY MERCEDES, AS IT WOULD APPEAR THIS IS A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE FUEL TANK OR A DEFECTIVE PART. A RECALL IS THE ONLY SOLUTION, AND IF MERCEDES BENZ'S REPUTATION IS BASED ON "SAFETY", THEN THIS IS THE ONLY VIABLE RESOLUTION.
AFTER FILLING UP THE VEHICLE AND DRIVING FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME ,I PARKED THE CAR IN MY GARAGE . WHEN I CAME BACK TO THE CAR THE WHOLE GARAGE SMELLED LIKE GASOLINE. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION GAS WAS LEAKING FROM THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE WITH THE REPAIR DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE CAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN SERVICED BY MERCEDES AND WAS DENIED ANY FINANCIAL HELP WITH THE REPAIR. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECTIVE FUEL SENDING UNIT AND POSSIBLE GAG TANK FAILURE THAT MERCEDES SHOULD REPAIR AS A WARRANTY CLAIM BUT THEY ARE REFUSING TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY . *TR
NOTICED A STRONG GAS SMELL AFTER FILL UPS. BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALER EXPECTING IT TO BE A SEAL OR SOMETHING BUT FOUND OUT THAT THE TOP OF THE TANK IS PRONE TO CRACKING AROUND THE INLET. WHEN THE FUEL IS FULL IT LEAKS. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE E CLASS. SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS TO HAVE A CAR THAT IS ONLY A FEW YEARS OLD THAT HAS A PROBLEM WITH A LEAKY GAS TANK? I THINK IT COST BETWEEN 2K AND 3K TO REPLACE THE TANK. I REALLY DON'T THINK A CAR THAT IS THAT EXPENSIVE,THAT NEW SHOULD HAVE A ISSUE LIKE THIS? *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, SO THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND SHE WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING. THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE LEAK WAS LOCATED AT THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. AS A RESULT, A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL WOULD EMIT FROM THE VEHICLE DURING THE FIRST FIFTY MILES OF DRIVING AFTER REFUELING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 83,000.
WE FIRST NOTICED A STRONG FUEL SMELL WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS FILLED UP, BUT SHORTLY AFTER WE WILL THE VEHICLE FUEL STARTED TO DRIP ONTO THE PAVEMENT NEAR THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR WHEEL AREA. *TR
I BOUGHT THE CAR IN MAY OF 2011. UPON PURCHASE I NOTICED A SMELL OF FUEL AFTER I WOULD TOP THE TANK OFF. I HAD A DEALER REPAIR IT (~$800) AND THEN NOTICED IT AGAIN THIS PAST WINTER (DEC 2012). IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM AS BEFORE, LEAKING (FUMES ONLY) JUST ON TOP OF THE TANK UNDER THE BACK SEAT. IT IS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS DESCRIBED IN ARTICLES I HAVE READ ABOUT THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION OF MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASSES. THIS IS A PROBLEM, I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
2005 MERCEDES BENZ E320. CONSUMER STATES FUEL FILTER ASSEMBLY PROBLEM *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED AFTER REFUELING THE VEHICLE, A STRONG ODOR OF GAS WAS PRESENT. AFTER THE FUEL FILTER PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED, THE MECHANIC HAD NO IDEA THERE WAS ALSO A GAS TANK PROBLEM. THE NEXT MONTH, THE STRONG ODOR OF GAS WAS BACK AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE FUMES WERE COMING FROM THE GAS TANK DUE TO A DEFECT IN THE GAS TANK DESIGN. A HOLD WAS DISCOVERED IN THE GAS TANK UNDER THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. *JB
VEHICLE WAS ACTING NORMALLY UP TO INCIDENT. ENTERING HIGHWAY ACCELERATING LIKE NORMAL AND PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF TRACTOR TRAILER WHEN SUDDENLY CAR HAD DRAMATIC AND FRIGHTENING LOSS OF POWER. FULL THROTTLE DID NOTHING. DOWNSHIFTING DID NOTHING. WITH TRUCK HORNS BLARING AND NEAR COLLISION, I PULLED OFF THE ROAD. RESTARTING CLEARED THE PROBLEM. DRAMATIC LOSS OF POWER HAS OCCURRED THREE MORE TIMES WITH NO WARNING NOR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. NOW LIGHT COMES ON WITH EGR OUT OF RANGE CODE. DISCUSSING THIS WITH OTHER MERCEDES DIESEL OWNERS POINTS TOWARDS SOOT CLOGGED EGR VALVE AND SOOT CLOGGED INTAKE MANIFOLD. HOW SUCH A PROBLEM COULD OCCUR SO FREQUENTLY AT SUCH A LOW MILEAGE WITH A COMPANY KNOWN FOR DIESELS IS UNKNOWN.
FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING UNDER THE BACK SEAT WHEN FILL UP TANK. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E500. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO SLOW DOWN; THE BRAKES FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AFTER THE FAILURE OCCURRED. HE WAS ABLE TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL GEAR IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST THAT LOCATED THE FAILURE TO THE BRAKE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM HYDRAULIC UNIT. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V133000, SERVICE BRAKES HYDRAULIC WAS PERFORMED IN 2006; YET, THE REPAIR DID NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,056 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 69,000.
I OWN A 2005 AMG E55 MERCEDES BENZ. THE FUEL SENDING UNIT IS LEAKING GAS INTO THE CAR UNDER THE REAR SEATS. THIS WAS A RECALL ISSUE IN 2008. CAR WAS TAKEN TO MERCEDES AND THEY SAID THEY FIXED IT. NOW I AM GETTING THE SAME GAS LEAK AND FUMES INTO THE CAR. WHEN I CALLED MERCEDESA AND ASKED WHAT THEY FIXED THEY SAID THEY DON'T KNOW IF THEY FIXED THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT SIDE. NO ONE WANTS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ISSUE. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED FROM THE US SPECIFICALLY ATLANTA GEORGIA. *TR
STRONG SMELL OF FUEL WHEN TANK IS HAS BEEN FILLED UP. AT FIRST IT WAS JUST PRESENT STANDING OUTSIDE THE CAR AT THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE. NOW I CAN SMELL IT INSIDE. THE DEALER TOLD ME I NEED A $1300 DOLLAR REPAIR. THEY WANT TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK, THE FUEL PUMP AND THE SENDING UNIT. I HAVE DONE A LOT OF READING ABOUT THIS AND HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THIS PROBLEM IS AFFECTING A LOT OF E CLASS OWNERS FROM THE 2003-2009 PRODUCTIONS AND EVEN A COUPLE OF OTHER MERCEDES MODELS. ONE OF THE SERVICE ADVISERS TOLD ME THEY ARE REPLACING A LOT OF TANKS, PUMPS AND SENDERS ON THIS STYLE OF E CLASS. I AM AWARE THERE IS A RECALL ON THE AMG E55 FOR FUEL TANK/PUMP/SENDER LEAK. THEY USE THE SAME PARTS IN THE REGULAR E CLASS CARS, NOT JUST AMG VERSIONS. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR AND CAN NOT AFFORD THE REPAIR WITHOUT GOING INTO DEBT. SO I HAVE DECIDED TO PARK IT. MERCEDES OF USA HAS IGNORED MY PLEA FOR HELP. BASED ON THE POTENTIALLY LETHAL ISSUE LEAKING FUEL CAN CAUSE I FEEL IT IS BEST TO LEAVE THE CAR PARKED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCEDES BENZ E350. THE CONTACT NOTICED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATING ALONG WITH A LEAK UNDERNEATH HER VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN INSPECTED BY A DEALER WHO ADVISED HER THAT WHEN THE FUEL LEVEL WAS LOW AND SHE ADDED FUEL OUTSIDE AIR WAS ENTERING THE TANK CAUSING THE LEAK. DURING APRIL/MARCH OF 2011, I NOTICED AFTER FILLING UP THE CAR FULLY OF 18 GALLONS AT THE GAS STATION, THE NEXT TWO DAYS THE CAR WOULD SMELL LIKE GAS WHEN PARKED IN MY 2 CAR GARAGE. ONCE I STEPPED INTO THE GARAGE, THERE WAS AN OVERWHELMING SMELL OF GAS. GOOGLED THIS ON THE WEB AND FOUND MBWORLD.ORG WHERE COMMON CASES FOR THE E CLASS MODEL. PULLED THE REAR BACK SEATS AND SAW THAT GAS WAS POOLING AROUND THE RIM OF THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. SOMEHOW FUEL HAD SEEPED UP PAST THE GASKET/UNIT. HAVING A LESS THAN 2YR OLD SITTING RIGHT ABOVE THE REAR BACK SEAT, I FELT THIS NEEDED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF ASAP. TOOK TO AMERICAN SERVICE CENTER, ARLINGTON, VA MERCEDES DEALER. I FOUND A TSB REGARDING THE FUEL SENDING UNIT THAT WOULD BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. VIN WAS PULLED AND SHOWED THIS ALREADY WAS DONE ON MY VEHICLE. BASICALLY I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET $956 TO GET A NEW FUEL SENDING UNIT PUT IN. SO FAR NO FUEL SMELLS, BUT AM AWARE THAT THIS IS JUST A QUICK FIX. MY 2006 E500 4MATIC THAT I ALSO OWN IS STARTING TO HAVE THIS SMELL NOW WHEN FILLED UP. WILL BE TAKING IT TO THE DEALER AS WELL, BUT I HAVE CPO WARRANTY FROM THE DEALER WHICH WILL COVER THE REPAIRS. *TR

2005 MERCEDES BENZ E CLASS HAS FUEL TANK ISSUES. MANY OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THE SAME ISSUE 2 TO 3 YEARS AFTER PURCHASE. FIRST THE FUEL CAP INDICATOR COMES ON, LATER TRIGGERING THE ENGINE LIGHT TO APPEAR AND UPON REPAIR ATTEMPTS EVERYTHING BUT THE FUEL TANK IS SUSPECTED. I SMELL STRONG GAS ODOR AT REAR DRIVER SIDE, WHEN I GET THE FULL TANK OF GAS. I WENT TO A SHOP AND LIFT THE CAR THAT I CAN SEE THE GAS LEAK AROUND THE TANK. CAR BOUGHT OFF LEASE FROM MERCEDES BENZ CREDIT AT AUCTION. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO SMELL STRONG FUEL VAPOR ODOR WHEN THE CAR WAS FILLED WITH FUEL. DETERMINED THAT FUEL TANK IS MADE OUT OF PLASTIC. THIS PLASTIC FUEL TANK HAD A CRACK IN IT. IT HAD TO BE REPLACED AT MY COST. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A NATIONAL RECALL AND BE PAID FOR BY MERCEDES BENZ. ONLINE, THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF THIS OCCURRING IN OTHER MERCEDES E320'S LIKE MINE. THE DEALER ADMITTED REPLACING OVER 20 OF THESE FUEL TANKS PER MONTH.

(THIS IS AN FROM A LETTER I SENT TO MERCEDES BENZ) I HAVE HAD A RECENT EXPERIENCE WITH MY MERCEDES BENZ 2005 E 320 DIESEL THAT I WOULD LIKE TO RELATE. WHILE DRIVING IN CINCINNATI LAST WEEK, I WAS ON A SEMI-RURAL ROAD DOING ABOUT 25-30 MPH AND SUDDENLY GOT A BEEPING AND RED LIGHT FLASHING ALARM ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INDICATING THAT MY BRAKES WERE FAILING. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AND TURN INTO AN APARTMENT COMPLEX DRIVEWAY AND BRING THE CAR TO A STOP. THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND HAD ALMOST NO STOPPING POWER, IF ANY. I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES BEFORE RE-STARTING. THE CAR RE-STARTED BUT WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK, SO I COULD NOT MOVE IT OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY TO AN ADJACENT PARKING LOT. THE BRAKE ALARM AND WARNING CONTINUED AFTER RE-STARTING. I CALLED MY MECHANIC IN CINCINNATI (PRECISION MOTORCARS 513-271-5565) AND ARRANGED TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED IN. AFTER ANALYSIS BY THEM, THEY DETERMINED THAT THE SBC HYDRAULIC BRAKING UNIT WAS PROBABLY DEFECTIVE AND WAS A MB WARRANTY ITEM. IN THE MEANTIME, THEY REPLACED MY FRONT BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. THE CAR WAS THEN TOWED TO MERCEDES BENZ OF CINCINNATI (WHERE I HAD PURCHASED IT IN FEBRUARY 2008). THEY REPLACED THE SBC AND GOT THE BRAKES WORKING CORRECTLY AGAIN, UNDER WARRANTY AND AT NO CHARGE TO ME. THIS EVENT HAS CERTAINLY SHAKEN MY FAITH IN THIS CAR. WHAT KIND OF CAR GIVES YOU A WARNING THAT YOUR BRAKES DON'T WORK, AND THEN YOU FIND THAT THEY DO NOT. IF I HAD BEEN IN A DIFFERENT DRIVING SITUATION, SUCH AS COMING UP TO A RED LIGHT AT 30 MPH, I MIGHT NOT BE WRITING THIS LETTER TODAY. *TR
MY CAR HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER NO FEWER THAN 4 TIMES FOR VARIOUS FUEL SYSTEM RELATED ISSUES. THE SYMPTOMS OF EACH PART FAILURE INVOLVE A PERVASIVE GAS SMELL FILLING THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE, AND GASOLINE USUALLY POOLS UNDER THE REAR SEAT. THE SMELL IS SO POTENT THAT THE CAR IS UNDRIVEABLE, AND THE POOLING OF GASOLINE INSIDE THE PASSENGER CABIN MUST BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THE GAS TANK, FUEL SENDERS, FUEL PUMP, CHARCOAL FILTERS, AND GASKET BETWEEN THE TANK AND FUEL SENDERS HAVE BEEN REPLACED TO NO AVAIL. I HAVE HAD TO FIGHT TO HAVE THIS PAID FOR UNDER MY EXISTING MERCEDES BENZ EXTENDED WARRANTY. MY WARRANTY EXPIRES IN JULY OF 2013, AND I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED THAT THIS WILL CONTINUE TO HAPPEN. MY W211 BEGAN TO SMELL OF FUEL WHILE PARKED IN MY GARAGE. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER, I AWOKE TO A VERY STRONG GAS SMELL IN MY GARAGE. WHEN I MOVED THE CAR OUT, A PUDDLE OF GAS WAS BENEATH MY CAR AND IT LITERALLY POURED FUEL OUT AS I BACKED IT DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR REPAIR AT THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED TWO SEALS AND DECLARED IT GOOD. THE NEXT DAY, I FILLED THE CAR AGAIN AND IT SMELLED JUST AS BAD AS BEFORE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE SEALS AND THE PUMP MODULES AND IT TOOK OVER A MONTH TO GET THE SMELL OUT OF THE CAR. APPROXIMATELY SIX WEEKS LATER, I'M NOT NOTICING A FAINT SMELL OF GAS YESTERDAY AND A STRONGER SMELL TODAY. I DISCUSSED WITH MERCEDES BENZ USA AND THEY SAID THAT THE CAR WAS REPAIRED UNDER A 'TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN' IN 2008, BUT IT'S BECOMING CLEAR THAT THE PROBLEM IS NOT GOING AWAY. THE FUEL PUMP MODULES ARE IN SEALED COMPARTMENTS UNDERNEATH THE PASSENGER SEAT, WHICH COMMUNICATES WITH THE INTERIOR. ADDITIONALLY, FUEL CAN POOL IN THIS AREA - WITH THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS FOR THE FUEL PUMPS. *TR
