ON 11/20/12, I FILLED UP MY CAR AND GOT A CAR WASH. THE CAR WASH ATTENDANT ASKED IF I HAD SPILLED A CAN OF GAS OR WAS TRANSPORTING A CAN OF GAS IN MY CAR. HE SAID THAT THERE WAS A STRONG ODOR OF GAS COMING FROM MY CAR. MY CAR WAS WET, SO I COULD NOT DIFFERENTIATE WATER FROM GAS ON THE OUTSIDE. I STARTED DRIVING HOME WHEN I REALIZED THE SMELL OF GASOLINE WAS COMING FROM INSIDE MY CAR. MY CHILD WAS IN THE CAR WITH ME. WE WERE ABOUT A MILE FROM HOME. I KEPT THE WINDOWS OPEN. I PARKED MY CAR AND PUT CARDBOARD BENEATH IT TRYING TO FIND THE LOCATION OF THE FUEL LEAK/ODOR. I WENT INSIDE TO FIND A DIAGRAM OF THE GAS TANK LOCATION WHEN I REALIZED THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED PROBLEM WITH MY MERCEDES. SEVERAL PEOPLE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WITH THEIR MERCEDES. THERE WERE SEVERAL INTERNET FORUMS RELATED TO LEAKING FUEL TANKS IN THEIR MERCEDES. I LATER LEARNED THAT GAS WAS LEAKING INSIDE OF MY CAR UNDER MY CHILD'S CAR SEAT WITH A CIGARETTE LIGHTER IN THE BACK OF THE CAR. IT WAS A FRIGHTENING MOMENT FOR ME AS A MOTHER. I SHOULD HAVE HAD MY CAR TOWED, BUT I DID NOT REALIZED HOW UNSAFE THE SITUATION WAS UNTIL I ARRIVED HOME. I TRIED CONTACTING MY LOCAL AND CORPORATE MERCEDES DEALERSHIPS TO SEE IF THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL. THERE WAS NOT. THEY ASKED ME TO DRIVE MY CAR TO THEIR DEALERSHIP. I LOST ALL CONFIDENCE AND TRUST IN MERCEDES AFTER MY PHONE CONVERSATIONS. I BOUGHT A MERCEDES BECAUSE OF THEIR REPUTATION FOR CARING ABOUT SAFETY. THE MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED AND FIXED THE CAR WROTE "REMOVED AND REPLACED FUEL TANK. ASSEMBLY - LEAK AROUND VENT ASSEMBLY NOT SERVICEABLE". HE ALSO COMMENTED THAT HE WAS SURPRISED THAT THE LOCAL MERCEDES DEALERSHIP HAD SO MANY GAS TANKS IN STOCK WHEN HE CALLED. STRONG SMELL OF GAS INSIDE THE CAR SITTING FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME WHILE ON OR OFF, REGARDLESS OF FUEL LEVEL. *TR
WHEN THE CAR IS FILLED WITH GAS, THERE IS A VERY STRONG LINGERING GASOLINE SMELL THAT LASTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS. *TR

IT HAS BEEN ABOUT A MONTH SINCE PURCHASE WHEN I NOTICE A GAS ODOR INSIDE THE CAR. IT SMELLS LIKE A FUEL LEAK. THE SMELL COMES & GOES. ONE DAY I TOOK MY CAR TO THE MERCEDES DEALER DUE TO A RECALL & INQUIRED ABOUT A GAS LEAK/ODOR THAT I NOTICED SINCE PURCHASE. I WAS TOLD THAT I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THE DIAGNOSTICS THEN IF IT IS THE FUEL SYSTEM THEN IT WILL COST APPROXIMATELY $3000 - $5000. IT'S BEEN ALMOST A YEAR SINCE I PURCHASE MY CAR & THE SMELL STILL LINGERS THROUGHOUT THE INSIDE OF MY CAR. I DON'T DRIVE MY CAR AS OFTEN AS I WANT TO DUE TO FEAR OF A FAULTY FUEL SYSTEM. *TR
AFTER FILLING CAR THERE IS A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE AROUND THE CAR. THE SMELL CONTINUES UNTIL THE TANK IS DOWN TO @3/4 . AFTER REACHING THIS POINT THE SMELL DISSIPATES SOMEWHAT BUT IS STILL DETECTABLE. THE GARAGE REEKS OF FUEL BUT THERE IS NOTHING ON THE FLOOR(YET). THIS PROBLEM STARTED AT @38,000 MILES AND CONTINUES. WE NOW HAVE @44,000 MILES ON THE CAR. WE TRIED CONTACTING MERCEDES USA BUT THEY MERELY TOLD US TO CONTACT A LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP WE CONTACTED AND RELAYED OUR PROBLEM TO (CHANTILLY VIRGINIA)CLAIMED THERE WAS NO KNOWN FUEL SYSTEM/TANK PROBLEM WITH THAT MODEL(2006 E350). THEY WOULD, OF COURSE, LOVE TO CHECK IT OUT. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THE COMMON FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM(IF IT WORKS)IS AROUND $2,000. *TR
I HAVE APPR. 64,0000 MILES ON MY MERCEDES E350 AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. SENT IT TO THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP AND SAID THAT THE CAR HAD A BALANCE SHAFT PROBLEM. SOLD ME THE CAR IN 2008. SERVICE BULLETINS WERE OUT SINCE 2007. MERCEDES WILL ONLY HELP MINIMALLY WITH THE COST. TOTAL COST SO FAR IS $3750.00. TO MUCH FOR ME. TOLD MERCEDES THAT I WOULD HAVE TO DRIVE AROUND IN A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE WITH MY FAMILY AND ASKED THE REP. IF THAT WAS SAFE, HE REPLIED "NO". REP. SAID THAT THERE WAS NO CAMPAIGN OUT ON THIS PROBLEM. SOMETHING NEEDS TO GET DONE BEFORE CASUALTIES OCCUR. *TR
PLEASE HELP TO ENCOURAGE MERCEDES BENZ TO REPLACE TO NEW GAS TANK PART #211-470-0502, FOR ALL THEIR CARS THAT HAVE THIS DEFECTIVE GAS TANK PART # 211-470-4201! ON 10-24-2012 I CAME INTO MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I SMELLED GAS AND OIL. THE DEALERSHIP MISDIAGNOSED THE GAS SMELL TO BE THE SENDING UNITS, REPLACING THEM. LIST: (211-470-40-94 AUXILIARY PU, 211-471-05-79 SEAL RING, 5088 PARTS CLEANER). THEN ON JAN 28, 2013, WHEN I CAME IN FOR MY ANNUAL INSPECTION, THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING AND SAID THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP HAD MISDIAGNOSED THE SENDING UNITS WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE GAS TANK ON 10-24-2012. MERCEDES BENZ, OLD GAS TANK PART # 211-470-4201, REPLACED BY NEW GAS TANK PART 211-470-0502. THE REASON WHY THIS IS SO IMPORTANT THAT MERCEDES BENZ REPLACE ALL TANKS OUT THERE IS BECAUSE IT ONLY TAKES A SMALL SPARK FROM RUBBING YOUR FOOT ON THE CARPET, TO AN ACCIDENT OR LIGHTING UP A CIGARETTE FOR THIS TO CREATE AN EXPLOSION, BECAUSE THE GAS TANK IS IN THE BACK SEAT OF THE CAR. I HAVE TWO INVOICES THAT I PAID FOR BAD PARTS AND REPLACING A DEFECTIVE GAS TANK ON THIS MERCEDES BENZ. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT MERCEDES BENZ HAS CARS ON THE ROAD THAT ARE AN ACCIDENT AWAY FROM BLOWING UP! A GAS TANK THAT IS LEAKING GAS IN THE BACK SEAT OF MY CAR IS NOT SOMETHING I WOULD HAVE PAID OVER $56,000 FOR WHEN I PURCHASED MY CAR! WHAT ABOUT ALL THE CARS THAT WERE SOLD AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DON'T EVEN KNOW AND MAY BE IN DANGER? PLEASE LOOK INTO THE DEFECTIVE GAS TANK THAT WAS PUT ON ALL THE 2006 MERCEDES E350 CARS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, SHE NOTICED STRONG GASOLINE FUMES INSIDE THE CABIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE SEVERAL PLASTIC PARTS WERE ATTACHED TO THE FUEL TANK. THE FAILURE RECURRED TWO MONTHS LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL TANK EXHIBITED A CRACK AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 106,000.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND COULD HEAR THAT THE ENGINE DIDN'T SOUND RIGHT, IT WAS REVVING AT A HIGHER RPM THAN NORMAL. I PULLED OVER TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG AND IT CONTINUED TO DO THIS EVERY TIME I TRIED TO ACCELERATE. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, TURNED IT BACK ON AND THEN ONLY HAD 3RD. GEAR AVAILABLE. NOTHING ELSE. I LATER FOUND OUT THAT IT'S CALLED "LIMP MODE" IT WOULDN'T GO FASTER THAN 40MPH AND NOTHING ELSE WORKED, JUST 3RD. GEAR AND REVERSE. AFTER DOING EXTENSIVE RESEARCH I LEARNED THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH MOST 7-SPEEDS AND THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE HAVING OR HAD THIS ISSUE IS APPALLING. APPARENTLY MERCEDES KNEW OF THIS MATTER ALL ALONG AND DID NOTHING. MY CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP NOW AND I HAVE TO PAY $1,600 TO HAVE THE CONDUCTOR PLATE AND VALVE BODY FIXED. I'M A SINGLE MOM, SELF EMPLOYED, BUT STILL A SINGLE MOM. THIS ISN'T RIGHT AND MERCEDES SHOULD BEND OVER BACKWARDS TO REMEDY THIS. "*TR
FUEL TANK LEAKING FUEL AT VENT HOSE IN TOP OF TANK. THE COMPLETE GAS TANK HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS DISCOVERED AFTER SAFETY COMPLAINT ODI NUMBER 10476789 WAS FILED OUTLINING ANOTHER SEVERE GAS TANK LEAK. I FOLLOWED THE SERVICING DEALER'S INSTRUCTION FOR ELIMINATING GAS SMELL FROM THE VEHICLE BY LEAVING WINDOWS OPEN WHILE VEHICLE WAS GARAGED AND DRIVING WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN FOLLOWING MY OWN INSTINCTS FOR SURVIVAL. HOWEVER, THE GAS SMELL DID NOT DISSIPATE. I CONTINUED TO SMELL GAS WHEN I WOULD APPROACH THE VEHICLE; AND THE GAS ODOR WOULD GET STRONGER THE LONGER THE VEHICLE SAT. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE 2ND LEAK WAS DISCOVERED, PROMPTING THEM TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE GAS TANK. THE SEVERE FUMES HAVE CREATED ALLERGY AND SINUS IRRITATION ISSUES FOR ME; AND A PHOBIA OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN CIGARETTES ARE THROWN FROM VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. I AM SO AFRAID THAT MY VEHICLE WILL EXPLODE WITH ME INSIDE OF IT...JUST IMAGINE! *TR
CAR DEVELOPED STRONG FUEL SMELL INSIDE CABIN. DURING 100K MILES SERVICE, DEALER SUGGESTED POSSIBLE FUTURE REPLACEMENT OF FUEL SENDING UNIT AT CUSTOMER'S EXPENSE. AFTER SERVICE VISIT TO DEALER, FUEL SMELL INSIDE CABIN BECAME STRONGER AND REAR SEAT WAS REMOVED BY CUSTOMER AND DISCOVERED FUEL FLUID ACCUMULATING BENEATH REAR SEAT. INSPECTION COVER WAS REMOVED AND THE SENDING UNIT WAS FOUND LEAKING FUEL FROM TOP COVER OF SENDING UNIT THROUGH A CRACK ON IT. FUEL LEAK IS CONFIRMED TO GENERATE THROUGH A HAIRLINE CRACK AT TOP OF SENDING UNIT. IT IS NOT FROM SEALS OR THREADED COVER. *TR
I NOTICED THE SMELL OF GASOLINE IN THE CABIN OF THE CAR. I DECIDED TO LOOK AROUND AND SEARCH FOR WHERE THE GASOLINE SMELL WAS COMING FROM. I DISCOVERED THAT THE CAR HAS A LEAK IN THE FUEL SYSTEM ON TOP OF THE SENDING UNIT. THERE WAS A POOL OF GASOLINE ONTOP OF THE SENDING UNIT RIGHT NEXT TO ELECTRICAL WIRES. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THERE WAS GASOLINE DRIPPING FROM BENEATH THE CAR. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ONLINE I DISCOVERED THAT MERCEDES BENZ DID A RECALL WHICH WAS 2008-020001. THIS RECALL WAS FOR SENDING UNITS THAT LEAKED ON ALL 03-06 211 & 219 AMG MODELS. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY MERCEDES BENZ WOULD NOT RECALL THE NON AMG VEHICLES, AS THEY TOO DEVELOP THE SAME DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS $3100 TO FIX THIS ISSUE. I THINK THAT THEY SHOULD FIX THE. *TR...UPDATED 09-18-13 *BF. THE CONSUMER STATED THE SENDING UNIT WAS REPLACED. THE DEALERSHIP ADVISED IT DID NOT NEED TOO BE REPLACED BUT WAS REPLACED ANYWAY UNBEKNOWNST TO THE CONSUMER.*JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES-BENZ E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE FUEL TANK WAS FULL, THE TANK WOULD LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER AND THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS UNKNOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 77,000.
FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THERE HAS BEEN A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE AFTER FUELING THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR HAS BECOME STEADILY WORSE AND WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR ASSISTANCE. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS CRACKED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. WHEN I INQUIRED HOW THIS COULD HAVE OCCURRED, I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE DUE TO IMPACT OR TRAUMA (WHICH IS IMPOSSIBLE AS THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY INCIDENT). WAS INFORMED THAT IT WOULD COST $2,300.00 TO REPAIR VEHICLE. CALLED MB-USA AND ASKED FOR ASSISTANCE. WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOT A RECALL ON THE FUEL TANK AND I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE COST. AS THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE, I HAD THE WORK PERFORMED AND RECEIVED A 10% "GOODWILL" DISCOUNT. PICKED UP VEHICLE AND DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE AND CONTINUED TO SMELL FUEL. CALLED DEALERSHIP AND THEY CAME TO PICK-UP. ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THEY DID NOT TIGHTEN A CLAMP OR SOMETHING. WE PICKED IT UP AGAIN AND THE ODOR WAS PERSISTENT. IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP BACK AND WE SUBSEQUENTLY TRADED THE VEHICLE IN. BOTTOM LINE.... I DO NOT THINK THAT A FUEL TANK SHOULD FAIL ON A VEHICLE WITH LESS THAN 90,000 MILES. I HAVE THE OLD TANK AND BELIEVE THAT MB SHOULD REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE COST OF THE TANK. *TR
CAR SMELLS OF GAS. I READ MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE 2006 E CLASS, WITH THE SAME ISSUE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES-BENZ E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE APPROACHING THE VEHICLE, SHE SMELLED AN OVERPOWERING GASOLINE ODOR BEING EMITTED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE FUEL TANK SEAM HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE ISSUE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE DEALER WOULD BE HANDLING THE REPAIR COSTS HOWEVER, THE DEALER STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WOULD HANDLE THE REPAIR COSTS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 74,000.
PLEASE REFERENCE EXISTING NHTSA COMPLAINT #PE12001. MY 2006 MERCEDES E55 HAS RAW FUEL PUDDLING UNDER THE REAR SEAT AREA BEHIND THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THERE APPEARS TO BE A LEAK FROM THE HOUSING OR TANK ITSELF IN THIS AREA. THE FUEL LEAK IS SUBSTANTIAL AND THE VAPORS FROM THIS LEAK ARE OVERWHELMING INSIDE THE CAR. I HAVE TAKEN NUMEROUS DETAILED PHOTOGRAPHS OF THIS LEAK. I ALSO HAVE A VIDEO CLIP THAT APPEARS TO CAPTURE A HISSING SOUND OF PRESSURIZATION INSIDE THE TANK FORCING FUEL VAPOR INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHARE ANY OF THIS INFORMATION WITH YOU TO HELP WITH YOUR INVESTIGATION. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED SEVERAL DOZEN COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS EXACT PROBLEM FROM OTHER MERCEDES E55 OWNERS, AND PERHAPS FROM OTHER MERCEDES MODELS THAT USE THE SAME GAS TANK / SENDER UNITS. DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF FUEL THAT IS PUDDLING UP IN THE BACK OF MY CAR, I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT AND THE RAW FUEL SMELL IS GIVING ME A HEADACHE EVEN WHEN I KEEP THE WINDOWS ROLLED ALL THE WAY DOWN. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR HELP IN APPLYING PRESSURE ON MBUSA TO PROVIDE A VALID AND COMPLETE FIX FOR THIS ISSUE. *TR
AFTER FILLING THE FUEL TANK LAST SEPTEMBER I NOTICED A VERY STRONG GASOLINE SMELL IN THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENED 2 MORE TIMES BEFORE BRINGING THE VEHICLE IN TO MY MECHANIC. HE EXPLAINED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK AT THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. *TR
FILLED UP WITH PREMIUM FUEL THEN DROVE HOME AND PARKED CAR IN DRIVEWAY. ENTERED CAR THE NEXT MORNING AND WAS OVERWHELMED BY GAS FUMES. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT IN 3 MONTHS. *TR
HEAVY GAS SMELL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE VEHICLE. FUEL LEAKING FROM DEFECTIVE ELBOW HOSE CONNECTION ALLOWING GAS TO LEAK INSIDE THE VEHICLE UNDER THE BACK SEAT INSULATION AND FUEL COVER; FUEL TRAVELED OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE BY WAY OF DRIPPING FROM UNDERNEATH THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE ALONG THE EXHAUST PIPE CAUSING STRONG GAS FUMES WHEN PARKED AND WHILE DRIVING. *TR
FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS I HAVE NOTICED A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE IN THE GARAGE WHEN I FILL-UP MY CAR. I GOT INTO THE PRACTICE OF FILLING-UP ONLY 3/4 OF THE TANK AND THE SMELL OF GAS WAS LESS NOTICEABLE THEN. FOR THE PAST WEEK I HAVE NOTICED THE SMELL OF GAS IS VERY STRONG NO MATTER HOW MUCH GAS IN THE TANK. I AM VERY CONCERNED. THE GASOLINE SMELL GIVES ME A HEADACHE AND I AM SURE IS NOT GOOD FOR MY HEALTH AND COULD LEAD TO A POSSIBLE EXPLOSION. I THINK THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD RECALL AND FIX THIS DEFECT.
I FILLED THE TANK OF OUR E320 CDI WITH DIESEL FUEL AT A LOCAL STATION AND DROVE THE SHORT DISTANCE HOME AND PARKED IN MY GARAGE. NEXT MORNING I NOTICED A PUDDLE OF DIESEL FUEL NEAR RIGHT-REAR TIRE. I DRIVE THE CAR NORMALLY TO WORK (~5 MILES) THE NEXT FEW DAYS AND NOTICED A PUDDLE OF DIESEL NEAR RIGHT REAR TIRE EACH TIME. DID A LITTLE ON-LINE RESEARCH AND LEARNED THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL SENDER SEAL ON W211 MB'S, LIKE MINE. SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH MB OF GRAND BLANC AND THEY CONFRMED THE DIAGNOSIS AND REPLACED THE SEAL UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. IF I WERE NOT UNDER WARRANTY, MB WOULD HAVE REFUSED TO PAY, FROM WHAT PEOPLE WITH SAME PROBLEM ARE REPORTING ON MB FORUMS. THIS IS RIDICULOUS THAT SUCH A PROBLEM WOULD HAPPEN ON A MB. 2006 MERCEDES BENZ MODEL E350. STRONG FUEL ODOR EMANATING FROM REAR AREA (TRUNK) OF VEHICLE ON THE OUTSIDE. CAR WOULD NOT START AND TOWED BY AAA TO MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP/CAR REPAIR. AAA TOW DRIVER STATED THAT THE ODOR OF GASOLINE WAS SO STRONG HE WAS TEMPTED IN CALLING THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. MERCEDES BENZ SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED US AT FIRST THAT CAR WAS FULL OF WATER. ORIGINALLY THE MECHANIC CLAIMED HE FOUND A POOL OF WATER INSIDE THE CAR'S TRUNK. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED THE TECHNICIAN OF OUR COMPLAINT OF A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL COMING FROM BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. IT WAS AT THIS TIME THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT HE FOUND A HEAVY POOL OF FUEL IN THE TRUNK AREA OF THE VEHICLE. THEY WERE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE SOURCE OF THE FUEL LEAK. THEY CHANGED THE GASOLINE TANK AND FUEL PUMP BUT WERE UNCERTAIN OF THE ACTUAL CAUSE OF THE LEAK. THE VEHICLE REMAINED AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR ONE WEEK. MERCEDES BENZ SERVICE MANAGER REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE FUEL LEAK WAS CAUSED BY A FACTORY DEFECT AND NOT BY WEAR AND TEAR OF THE PARTS AND WE WERE CHARGED FOR ALL THE REPAIRS. WE ARE AWARE THAT SIMILAR INCIDENTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED FOR THE SAME MERCEDES BENZ MODEL IN OTHER STATES. WE FEEL THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED URGENTLY BEFORE SOMEONE EITHER GETS HURT OR LOSES THEIR LIFE. *TR

I NOTICED STRONG GASOLINE SMELL IN MY 2006 E500. THE SMELL IS VERY STRONG INSIDE THE CABIN AND MY VEHICLE ALWAYS STAYS IN THE GARAGE. WHEN I WALK INTO THE GARAGE I ALSO SMELL A VERY STRONG GAS ODOR. TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY SAID THE "FUEL TANK WAS LEAKING AT PLASTIC MOUNTING WELD". I WAS CHARGED TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK. NOW THE SMELL IS STARTING TO COME BACK AGAIN, SO THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE COMING BACK. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 32,000.
CAR HAS CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON, DIAGNOSED TO HAVE BALANCE SHAFT FAILURE. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN DEFECT THAT HAPPENS TO MANY CARS WITH THIS ENGINE. MERCEDES WAS AWARE SINCE 2007, BUT REFUSES TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, ONLY OFFERS TO GIVE 'FREE' PARTS. DEALER SAYS WOULD COST $4500 TO $6000 FOR LABOR TO FIX. I OWN A 2006 MERCEDES E-SERIES WITH 47,000 MILES. I HAVE NOTICED A FUEL SMELL WHEN THE CAR IS IN THE GARAGE AFTER REFILLING THE TANK. THE PROBLEM WAS RECENTLY DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY FUEL TAN SEAL. THE DEALER HAS INDICATED THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION AND THE CAR SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN. THE ESTIMATED REPAIR COST IS OVER $600. IN RESEARCHING THIS ON THE INTERNET I FIND THIS IS A COMMON DANGEROUS PROBLEM BUT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL. I ALSO FIND THAT IN INSTANCES WHERE THE SEAL HAS BEEN REPLACED, THE PROBLEM RECURS A SHORT TIME LATER AND IT IS RELATED TO THE ENTIRE MECHANISM, NOT JUST THE SEAL. I PURCHASED MY MERCEDES E350 IN NOVEMBER OF 2008. I BEGAN NOTICING A STRONG FUEL ODOR EVERY TIME I WOULD FILL THE TANK, WHICH WOULD DISSIPATE AFTER A FEW DAYS. SINCE THE ODOR WOULD GO AWAY WITHIN A FEW DAYS, I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT IT WAS A SAFETY CONCERN. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP FOR OIL CHANGES AND SUCH AND THEY WOULD ALWAYS MENTION A LONG LIST OF ITEMS REQUIRING PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE, BUT NEVER MENTIONED ANYTHING ABOUT THE FUEL TANK (ALTHOUGH THE GAS SMELL WAS OBVIOUS AT TIMES). IN JUNE OF 2012, MY HUSBAND BEGAN DRIVING THE MERCEDES TO WORK. HE SMELLED THE ODOR IMMEDIATELY UPON FILLING CAUSING HIM MASSIVE HEADACHES. ALSO, HE NOTICED GAS LEAKING UNDER THE CAR ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE NEAR THE REAR TIRE WHENEVER HE FILLED UP THE TANK. A MECHANIC INVESTIGATED THE PROBLEM, AND DISCOVERED A PUDDLE OF GASOLINE UPON REMOVING THE REAR SEAT. I COULD NOT BELIEVE THE AMOUNT OF GASOLINE THAT HAD POOLED INSIDE THE CABIN OF THE CAR. IT WAS DECIDED THAT THE SENDING UNITS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MERCEDES REPLACED THE SENDING UNITS, AND KNOWINGLY SENT US ON OUR WAY WITHOUT CORRECTING THE PROBLEM. REPLACING THE SENDING UNITS DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. HEAVY LEAKAGE CONTINUED, AND THE ODOR OF GAS BECAME OVERWHELMING AS THE TEMPERATURES REMAINED IN THE 100'S. WHEN THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO MERCEDES, THEY INFORMED US OF A LEAK IN THE GAS TANK AND QUOTED US $2600+ FOR REPAIRS. THE MERCEDES SERVICE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT OUR PROBLEM WAS NOT UNCOMMON, ESPECIALLY WITH THE ARIZONA HEAT. I HAD BEEN DRIVING THE CAR UNKNOWINGLY FOR APPROXIMATELY FOUR YEARS WITH THE FUEL TANK ISSUE BECOMING INCREASINGLY WORSE AND CONSEQUENTLY, MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO CONCEIVE A CHILD.

I GOOGLED THE PROBLEM ONLINE TO SEE IF IT WAS A COMMON ISSUE, AND IT SEEMS AS IF MANY PEOPLE HAVE THIS ISSUE AND MERCEDES ALREADY PERFORMED A RECALL ON THESE CARS TO TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM. I CONFIRMED WITH THE DEALER THAT THE RECALL WAS DONE TO MY VEHICLE AND IT WAS. *TR

THIS IS CREATING A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD WITH POSSIBLE FIRE IN ENGINE AREA.THIS PROBLEM IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. MERCEDES BENZ TELLS ME THAT BECAUSE MY CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR WHICH IS ABOUT $1000.00 DOLLARS.THE WIRE INSULATION SHOULD LAST A VERY LONG TIME IF CAR IS PROPERLY DESIGNED AND THIS WIRING PROBLEM SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY THE MANUFACTURE WITH NO COST TO THE CAR OWNERS. THE WELL AROUND THE FUEL PUMP HOUSING WAS FULL OF FUEL. 7/5/12, RETURNED CAR TO DEALER. THEY SAID THAT THE TANK WAS "WARPED" AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE LEAK SEEMS TO HAVE STOPPED, BUT FUEL HAD LEAKED ONTO THE INSULATION UNDER THE BACK SEAT. THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR NOW REEKS OF GASOLINE, ALMOST TO THE POINT OF NOT BEING ABLE TO DRIVE DUE TO SMELL. *TR

RIGHT AFTER I STARTED NOTICING THE GAS SMELL, THE VEHICLE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I RECENTLY HAD THE VEHICLE CHECKED BY AN AUTHORIZED MERCEDES BENZ SERVICE CENTER WHO STATED GAS TANK HAS CRACK AT THE TOP AND IS LEAKING FUEL. THE ENTIRE TANK AND ALL THE COMPONENTS WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED AT $3,000. I MENTIONED THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER VEHICLES WITH THIS PROBLEM AND A COUPLE OF CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS AND IT APPEARS THAT THE VEHICLE'S GAS TANK IS DEFECTIVE. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN REFUSED TO REPAIR THE COMPONENTS UNDER ANY CAMPAIGN OR RECALL. *TR
THIS ISN'T A COMPLAINT, IT IS A REQUEST FOR CONSIDERATION OF OR ASSISTANCE FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE GASOLINE TANK FOR MY VEHICLE. WHEN I TOOK OWNERSHIP FROM THE PREVIOUS OWNER, THE FIRST TIME I FILLED UP THE GAS TANK, THE VEHICLE WAS EMITTING A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE MERCEDES BENZ CERTIFIED SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE HERE BECAUSE THIS IS WHERE THE PREVIOUS OWNER ALWAYS HAD THIS VEHICLE SERVICED. THERE WERE NO RECORDS SHOWING THIS PROBLEM BEING LOOKED INTO, AND WHEN I ASKED THE PREVIOUS OWNER, HE SAID HE NEVER FILLED UP THE GASOLINE TANK, ALWAYS PUTTING IN $15 - $20 OR SO AT A TIME, THEREFORE HE NEVER SMELLED THE GASOLINE ODOR. THE MERCEDES BENZ CERTIFIED SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE INFORMED ME THAT THIS MODEL ALONG WITH 2005 AND 2007 MODELS HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE GASOLINE TANKS. I THEN TOOK IT TO OUR MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP HERE AND TALKED WITH A SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE. HE WAS VERY, VERY HELPFUL, VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE, AND TOLD ME THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THIS ISSUE ON THESE MODELS, BUT NO VEHICLES HAD BEEN RECALLED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SMELL OF GASOLINE WAS VERY PROMINENT IN THE VEHICLE CABIN AFTER REFUELING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION WHERE THEY ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE FUEL PUMP AND TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
I RECENTLY NOTICED IN MY 2006 E500 4MATIC THAT AFTER I PUT A FULL TANK OF GAS IN THE CAR, THERE IS A STRONG ODOR OF GAS COMING FROM THE REAR DRIVER SIDE BACK SEAT. MY CAR IS GARAGE KEPT AND ONCE I ENTER THE GARAGE IN THE MORNING TO GO TO WORK, ITS VERY STRONG ODOR OF GAS. I AM CONCERNED THAT THERE IS A GAS LEAK OF SOME SORT. I HAVE A 2 1/2 YEAR OLD SON THAT SITS BEHIND THE DRIVER SIDE REAR SEAT. THIS GAS LEAK SMELL HAS HAPPENED TO OVER SEVERAL HUNDRED ECLASS VEHICLES. *TR
2006 MERCEDES E350 PURCHASED IN NOVEMBER 2007. CURRENT MILEAGE LESS THAN 90K. IN MARCH 2012 I ENTERED MY GARAGE AND SMELLED A HEAVY SCENT OF GASOLINE. VEHICLE TAKEN TO MERCEDES BENZ OF BUCKHEAD. ADVISED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH FUEL LEAKING UNDER BACK PASSENGER SEAT. VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. REPAIR COST $965.63. *TR
