BALANCE SHAFT FAILURE. AT 57,700 MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON WITH CODES 1200/1207 ALSO KNOWN AS P0016 AND P0017. THE BALANCE SHAFT SPROCKET IS EXCESSIVELY WORN DUE TO MANUFACTURER DEFECT KNOWN BY MERCEDES BENZ USA TO BE DUE TO POORLY HARDENED METAL IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THIS PART. MAY CAUSE COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE AND LOSS OF POWER. MANUFACTURER REFUSED TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE IN CORRECTING THE DEFECT. *TR
LEAKING GAS INTO CAR CABIN....APPARENTLY THIS IS A WELL KNOWN AND DOCUMENTED PROBLEM. WE ARE TAKING THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TOMORROW. *TR
I AM GETTING A STRONG GAS SMELL FROM THE CAR WHEN STANDING OUTSIDE OF THE CAR WITH IT RUNNING AND LONG AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN SHUT OFF. IF I PARK THE CAR IN THE GARAGE AFTER A DRIVE AND THEN COME BACK TO IT 30 MINUTES LATER MY WHOLE GARAGE SMELLS LIKE GAS BUT CANNOT SEE ANY LEAKING. *TR
FUEL VAPOR LEEK AROUND THE FUEL TANK. IF TANK IS FILLED BEYOND 3/4 A STRONG ODOR OF GAS PERMEATES THE CABIN AS WELL AS THE IMMEDIATE AREA SURROUNDING THE CAR. CAN NOT KEEP IN AN ENCLOSED GARAGE FOR FEAR OF EXPLOSION. *JS
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE BALANCE SHAFT GEAR, EXHAUST CAMSHAFT POSITION TIMING PROBLEM WAS HAPPENING. COST TO REPAIR IS $7000. WAS TOLD THE ISSUE WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. STARTED TO INVESTIGATE ONLINE AND FOUND OUT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. *TR
I FILLED MY GAS TANK AND PARKED IN GARAGE WHEN I RETURNED TO DRIVE VEHICLE I SMELLED GAS IN THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MERCEDES DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE FUEL PUMP LOCATED UNDER THE REAR SEAT HAD A LEAK THAT COULD ONLY BE REPAIRED BY REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP SO I HAD THE PUMP REPLACED THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THEY BELIEVED BASED ON THE NUMBER OF REPLACEMENTS AND THE POTENTIAL FOR FIRE THAT THIS WOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
I HAD SO MANY PROBLEM WITH MY MERCEDES E350, BUT WHEN THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON I COULDN'T BELIEVE WAS THE BALANCE SHAFT. IT WAS IN WARRANTY SO I DIDN'T PAY A CENT BUT WHEN THEY RETURNED THE CAR BACK WAS NOT THE SAME ANY MORE, THE TAIL LIGHT WAS CRACKED AND THE A/C OPENING ARE INSIDE. THE CAR IS NOT ANY MORE THE SAME, SOMETIMES IS SHAKING, AND HAS SO MANY OTHER PROBLEMS. I SAW ONLINE THAT MERCEDES HAS TO MANY CARS WITH THIS DEFECTS THAT BRINGS MORE PROBLEMS, SO I'M ASKING WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR A RECALL?????? *TR
STRONG GASOLINE ORDER, ESPECIALLY WHEN TANK IS FULL. MECHANIC SAYS THAT GAS TANK PUMP IS LEAKING. I HEAR THAT OTHER OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR
STRONG GASOLINE ODOR ON FILL UP. PUMP AND SENDING UNIT SEALS REPLACED (MB DEALER DIAGNOSTIC). TANK FAILS PRESSURE TEST. TANK HAS LOST INTEGRITY DUE TO AN AS YET INSPECTED CRACK ON UPPER PORTION (INDEPENDENT MECHANIC). *TR
ON 1/25/2012 I NOTICED A SMELL OF GAS UPON REFUELING MY VEHICLE. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE FIRST AS A DEFECTIVE FUEL SENDER AND AFTER REPLACING THE FUEL SENDER AS A DEFECTIVE GAS TANK. ESSENTIALLY FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE GAS TANK UNDER THE BACK SEAT AND POOLING UNDER THE BACK SEAT. THE SMELL OF GASOLINE VAPORS WAS EXTREMELY STRONG AND ALARMING. I REPLACED THE FUEL TANK AT MY OWN COST. *TR
MERCEDES E350 2006, HAS BAD ODOR OF GAS. I NOTICED AFTER FILLING UP GAS, AND PARKED MY CAR IN GARAGE IN THE MORNING MY WHOLE GARAGE HAD A SMELL OF GAS. WHENEVER GAS TANK IS FILLED, STRONG GASOLINE SMELL PERSIST AROUND CAR UNTIL FUEL LEVEL DROPS TO 3/4 LEVEL. IF CAR IS PARKED IN A GARAGE, ENTIRE GARAGE HAS EXTREMELY STRONG GASOLINE ODOR. CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND DEALER ADVISED THAT FUEL TANK HAS A LEAK WITH NO SAFETY RECALL. THIS IS A SERIOUS FIRE HAZARD AND AFTER SEARCHING INTERNET I FOUND OUT THAT HUNDREDS OF USERS HAVE REPORTED EXACT SAME ISSUE. MERCEDES SHOULD FIX THIS ISSUE FOR FREE. *TR
THE INTERIOR CABIN OF MY 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E500 HAS A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE, ESPECIALLY AFTER REFUELING. RECENTLY, I GET HEADACHES AND DIZZY WHEN DRIVING, SO I HAVE TO ROLL DOWN THE WINDOWS TO GET RID OF THE SMELL. I HAVE ADDRESSED THIS PROBLEM TO MULTIPLE MERCEDES BENZ SERVICE CENTERS AND THEY SAID THAT THERE IS NO DANGER BUT IF I WANTED THE SMELL TO GO AWAY, IT WOULD COST ME APPX $2000. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A DANGER WHILE DRIVING BECAUSE THE FUMES CAN CAUSE THE DRIVER TO PASS OUT, OR A SPARK IN THE CAR POSSIBLY FROM A SHORT CIRCUIT OR CIGARETTE LIGHTER COULD IGNITE IN THE CAR AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. AFTER DOING RESEARCH REGARDING THIS MATTER, IT SEEMS IT IS THE EXACT COMPLAINT OF: REFERENCE NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE12001. I FEEL THAT THIS ENGINEERING/MANUFACTURE DEFECT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY MERCEDES BENZ AND REPAIRED DUE TO ITS POTENTIAL HAZARDS IT MAY CAUSE ON THE HIGHWAY. *TR
AFTER FILLING CAR WITH GAS THERE IS A GASOLINE SMELL. ODOR SO STRONG CANNOT LEAVE CAR IN GARAGE UNTIL GAS DIPS BELOW APPROXIMATELY 3/4 TANK. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FROM A COMPLETE STOP, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. A LOCAL MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 61,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK COMING FROM THE FUEL PUMP, CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE FAILURE WAS WITHIN THE FUEL FILTER MODULE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
SUMMARY: BOTH FUEL SENDING UNITS LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. FUEL WAS PUDDLING UNDER THE REAR SEATS AND WAS DRIPPING ON TO THE GROUND. MY 6 YEAR OLD SON GOT IN THE CAR THIS MORNING AND COMPLAINED THAT IT SMELLED LIKE GAS. THIS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AS WELL AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE. WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE LEAKING FUEL CAME IN CONTACT WITH A HOT EXHAUST PIPE? A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM IN 2008, HOWEVER, THE RECALL DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM, IT ONLY DELAYS IT UNTIL YOU ARE OUT OF WARRANTY AND ARE FORCED TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR A COSTLY REPAIR. *TR
SENDER UNIT LEAKED UNDER BACK SEAT. PRESSURE VALVE FAILED IN FUEL TANK. I HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE DEFECTIVE PARTS. POOL OF GASOLINE UNDER READ SEAT. STRONG ODOR OF GAS WHEN THE CAR WAS FILLED UP. LOCAL DEALER GOODILLED PART OF THE REPAIR DUE TO MY CONSTANT BUSINESS AND PREVIOUS PURCHASES. *TR
MY VEHICLE STARTED HAVING A FAINT GAS SMELL AFTER REFUELING A FEW YEARS AGO. I AM NOT SURE OF THE EXACT DATE OR MILEAGE AS I JUST THOUGHT THIS WAS A MINOR PROBLEM. THE SMELL WOULD DISAPPEAR AFTER I HAD USED ABOUT A QUARTER OF A TANK. THE ODOR HAS GOTTEN STRONGER OVER THE PAST YEAR WHICH PROMPTED ME TO DISCUSS WITH MY MECHANIC. THEY HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL CAP AND THE SEALS ON THE GAS TANK WITH NO REDUCTION IN THE SMELL. THEY ALSO CAN FIND NO VISIBLE REASON FOR THE GAS ODOR. THE GAS ODOR IS NOW SO STRONG AFTER REFUELING I AM UNABLE TO PARK MY CAR IN THE GARAGE BECAUSE THE SMELL PERMEATES THROUGH MY HOME. MY CAR HAS 149,424 MILES ON IN TO DATE. I SAW AN ARTICLE FROM THE BOSTON GLOBE AND THIS PROMPTED ME TO REPORT MY ISSUE. *TR
MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON SO I TOOK IT TO THE MB DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT IT WAS A BALANCE SENSOR LOCATED INSIDE THE ENGINE AND IT COST $7000.00 TO FIX CAUSE THE ENTIRE ENGINE HAS TO BE TAKEN OUT, MY CAR ONLY HAS 70,000 MILES AND I HAVE NOTICED THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE WITH THEIR MB CARS AS WELL. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH THEIR BENZ AND THERFORE THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOME RECALL ON IT BY NOW. *TR

I NEEDED TO REPLACE MY GASOLINE TANK IN MY MERCEDES BENZ WHEN THE SMELL FROM GASOLINE FUMES BECAME OVERWHELMING. I HAD THE SMELL, ESPECIALLY AFTER I FILLED UP THE TANK FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND WAS ALWAYS TOLD THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG AND THAT A GASOLINE SMELL AFTER FILLING UP IS NORMAL. WHEN I TOOK IN THE CAR BECAUSE I COULD NOT DRIVE IT ANY LONGER BECAUSE OF THE SEVERE SMELL, I WAS TOLD THAT MY GAS TANK HAD A LEAK AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS ALSO TOLD THIS WAS VERY UNUSUAL. THE GAS TANK HAS BEEN REPLACED AND I HAVE HAD NO GASOLINE SMELL SINCE THEN. *TR
THE CAR STARTED TO GET STRONG GAS SMELL SPECIALLY AFTER A FULL TANK FILL UP. I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND THIS PROBLEM STARTED IN LATE 2011. *TR
IN THE PREVIOUS MONTHS LEADING UP TO MARCH 2012, I, ALONG WITH MY FAMILY, STARTED TO SMELL A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL IN THE INTERIOR OF OUR MERCEDES BENZ E 350W. THE SMELL WAS SO STRONG THAT WHEN RIDING IN THE AUTOMOBILE, WE HAD TO DRIVE WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN FEARING OF WHAT COULD HAPPEN TO ME AND MY FAMILY IF THERE WAS A SPARK FROM ANY PART OF THE ENGINE OR UNDERNEATH THE AUTOMOBILE. AT A POINT DURING THAT BAD EXPERIENCE WITH THAT AUTOMOBILE, I COULD ONLY FILL THE FUEL TANK HALF FULL WITHOUT SMELLING THE STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE INSIDE THE VEHICLE. I THOUGHT IT WAS NOW TIME TO GET SOME PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AND ADVICE. IN JANUARY, 2012, I TOOK MY AUTOMOBILE TO ATLANTA CLASSIC CARS, INC. IN DULUTH GEORGIA 30098. AFTER THE FIRST INSPECTION, I WAS TOLD FUEL SENDING UNITS LEAK FUEL. THE NEXT VISIT, MARCH 2012, BOTH SENDING UNITS WERE REPLACED. BEFORE THE NEXT VISIT, THE FUEL FUMES CONTINUED. THE NEXT VISIT, APRIL 3, 2012, THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED DUE TO INTERMITTENT OPEN CIRCUIT. THE NEXT VISIT, APRIL 9, 2012; "THE TEAM LEADER FOUND A SLIGHT TRAIL OF FUEL RESIDUE WHICH MAY BE WHERE FUEL VAPORS ARE COMING FROM PART OF THE FUEL TANK." THE NEXT AND LAST VISIT, APRIL 12, 2012 THE FUEL TANK WAS REPLACED. NOT TRUSTING THE WORK PERFORMED BY THAT DEALERSHIP AND THE TIME IT TOOK TO FIND THAT PROBLEM, MY WIFE AND I HAD NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO TRADE THE AUTOMOBILE. MAINTAINING OWNERSHIP OF THAT AUTOMOBILE WAS MUCH TOO RISKY AND DANGEROUS FOR MY FAMILY. DEALING WITH THAT DEALERSHIPS SERVICE ADVISOR WAS MUCH TOO DIFFICULT!!! *TR

DRIVING EAST ON US 30 IN SLOW MOVING TRAFFIC ON WET PAVEMENT (DUE TO PREVIOUS RAIN) BETWEEN TORONITO STREET AND LOUCKS MILL ROAD IN YORK, PA, I ATTEMPTED TO SLOW DOWN TO STAY WITH THE TRAFFIC AND REALIZED THE BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING, I APPLIED FULL PRESSURE EXPECTING THE ABS TO ACTIVATE AND NOTHING HAPPENED. I RAN INTO THE BACK OF THE CAR AHEAD WHICH WENT INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF HIM. THE IMPACT DID NOT ACTIVATE THE AIRBAGS. MY SEAT BELT HELD ME BUT I DID RECEIVE WHIP-LASH. THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAS TOTALED MY CAR. *TR THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A LETTER FROM MERCEDES BENZ STATING THE IMPACT DAMAGE WAS BELOW AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT THRESHOLDS AND THE EXAMINATION OF THE VEHICLE, REVEALED NO DEFECT IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM. ENGINE/TRANSMISSION WAS ACTING JERKY AND SUDDENLY THE CAR LOST POWER TO ENGINE AND THE CAR BROKE ON IT'S OWN DOING CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SWERVE INTO THE OTHER LANE. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO CARS BEHIND OR TO THE SIDE OF ME AS THIS WOULD HAVE SURELY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. CURRENTLY THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT IN PLACE SPECIFICALLY TO THE ENGINE IN MY CAR AND THE PART AT FAULT. *TR

I NOTICED FUEL STAINS ON BOTTOM OF FUEL TANK AND SMELL OF DIESEL IN MY GARAGE ESPECIALLY AFTER FILL UP. I TOLD THE DEALER WHEN I HAD THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE. THEY SAID I HAD A FUEL LEAK AND THE FUEL TANK WOULD HAVE TO BE REMOVED TO FIND THE SOURCE. THEY SAID THE PROBLEM COULD BE THE TANK, SENDING UNIT, OR SEALS....ALL VERY EXPENSIVE TO DIAGNOSE/ REPAIR. I MET WITH THE SERVICE MGR TO SEEK AN OUT OF WARRANTY COVERAGE AND GOT NOTHING. I CALLED MERCEDES CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE. THEY DECLINED TO COVER ANY OUT OF WARRANTY REPAIR COSTS. I REMOVED THE REAR SEAT AND FOUND FUEL PUDDLING AROUND THE SENDING UNIT (IN THE TANK) ON THE DRIVER?S SIDE. IT IS UNCONSCIONABLE THAT THERE ARE FUEL LEAKS IN A HIGH LINE EXPENSIVE CAR LIKE THIS. MERCEDES CUSTOMERS SHOULD RIGHTFULLY EXPECT A LEAK FREE FUEL TANK FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR. IT IS SHAMEFUL THAT MERCEDES DOESN'T OWN UP TO IT AND ISSUE A RECALL NOTICE AND FIX THIS BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. *TR
The contact owns a 2006 Mercedes-Benz E350. The contact stated while the vehicle was stationary, she started to smell an abnormal fuel odor from the rear driver’s side seat. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the fuel level sending unit and the seals and gaskets to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that she was unable to continue driving the vehicle due to odor. The contact towed the vehicle to another local dealer, Mercedes-Benz of Myrtle Beach (936 Jason Blvd, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577, (843) 848-6800) where it was diagnosed with needing the fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel line and all the seals and gaskets needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.
PRIOR TO INCIDENT DATE, I BEGAN TO SMELL A STRONG GASOLINE SMELL THAT FILLED THE GARAGE. THE SMELL GOT PROGRESSIVELY WORSE SO I TOOK IT TO EWING AUTOHAUS IN PLANO, TEXAS ON 08-31-11. THE CAR WAS DIAGNOSED AS HAVING A FUEL LEAK AND NEEDED A NEW FUEL TANK THAT WOULD COST $2000.00 TO FIX. I QUESTIONED WHY A NEW FUEL TANK WAS NEEDED SINCE THE CAR HAD NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. I WAS NOT GIVEN AN ANSWER AND REFUSED TO HAVE THEM FIX IT. I WAS LATER TOLD THAT THE GASOLINE WAS LEAKING FROM THE TOP AND AS LONG AS THE TANK WAS NOT COMPLETELY FULL THE GASOLINE WOULD NOT LEAK. I TOOK THE CAR INTO MERCEDES BENZ PARK PLACE DALLAS FOR A TRANSMISSION ISSUE IN JANUARY OF 2013 AND I ASKED THEM TO CHECK THE FUEL TANK AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE FUEL TANK ALSO AS HAVING A LEAK AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACE. THIS REPAIR WOULD COST $3000.00. I DECLINED THIS REPAIR ALSO AND STATED TO THEM THAT I FELT THAT THE CAR HAD A FAULTY FUEL TANK AS WELL AS A FAULTY TRANSMISSION AND WAS I WAS EXTREMELY UPSET HAVING TO SMELL GASOLINE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CAR IF THE TANK WAS A LITTLE BIT OVERFILLED . *TR

SERVICE BULLETIN ISSUED BY MERCEDES AND ALSO SEARCH OF INTERNET FINDS NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF THIS PROBLEM. CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FILED ON THIS ISSUE. FUEL SMELL INSIDE CABIN AFTER REFILLING TO 100% CAPACITY. ONLY GOES AWAY ONCE CAR HAS CROSSED 3/4 TANK WHICH IS NORMALLY ABOUT 75 MILES. THERE HAVE BEEN HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS JUST LIKE THIS, I HAVE HAD IT LOOKED INTO AS MUCH AS I COULD, BUT COULD NOT AFFORD TO HAVE MY MECHANIC PULL THE FUEL TANK TO DIAGNOSE FURTHER. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THEN WENT OFF. TOOK TO THE DEALER TOLD CODE WAS FOR GEAR IN THE BALANCE SHAFT AND THAT THE JOB WOULD BE $6000. TOLD ME IT WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR BUT THEY WERE WILLING TO PAY 50%. IF NORMAL WEAR WHY WOULD THEY EVEN PAY. CAR HAD 93K MILES. SEE THAT THIS IS A 2006 MERCEDES E350 ISSUE AND NOT JUST WEAR. I JUST WAS ADVISED BY MY MERCEDES ONLY INDEPENDENT GARAGE THAT THE ON-GOING CEL ON MY 2006 E350 (48000 MILES) IS FOR THE CAMSHAFT WEAR MENTIONED IN THIS LAWSUIT. THE MECHANIC ADVISES REPAIR COST IS $6200. HE HAS THE BULLETIN AND HAS SEEN THIS ISSUE IN MULTIPLE CARS. I WILL BE COMPLAINING TO THE NHTSA AND HOPING NHTSA CAN RECOVER MY DAMAGES FOR THIS OBVIOUS AND KNOWN DEFECT.CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS STAR DIAGNOSIS INDICATED : CODE 1200 AND 1208 ( P0016 AND P0017) FOR MB E350 2006 48000 MIL MERCEDES HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SINCE 2007 AND HAS FAILED TO NOTIFY ANY OWNERS OF THE PROBLEM. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CAME ON. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR MAINTENANCE AND ASKED THEM TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT WAS ASSOCIATED WITH A FAULTY BALANCE SHAFT AND THAT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED SOONER THAN LATER OR ELSE IT COULD CAUSE ENTIRE ENGINE TO STOP WORKING WHEN IT FAILED. THE QUOTED PRICE FOR REPAIRS WAS AROUND $5500 WITH A $1000 DISCOUNT. ONCE HOME, WE RESEARCHED "FAULTY BALANCE SHAFT ON 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E350" AND FOUND THE FIRST WEBSITE TO HAVE INFORMATION OF A CLASS ACTION LEGAL SUIT IN PROGRESS AGAINST MERCEDEZ BENZ OVER DEFECTIVE BALANCE SHAFT GEARS IN MERCEDES BENZ M272 ENGINES & IDLE GEARS IN MERCEDES BENZ M273 ENGINES. IT WAS DISCONCERTING TO REALIZE THAT A VAST NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS WITHOUT GETTING RELIEF FROM MBUSA. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE TO SEE THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE OF DEFECTIVE ENGINES FROM A MANUFACTURER WHO COMMANDS A PRICE PREMIUM FOR ITS "SUPERIOR ENGINEERING" AND YET DOES NOTHING TO CORRECT A SERIOUS AND WIDESPREAD FAULT. FROM THE VARIOUS REPORTS, INCLUDING THOSE IN THE LAWSUIT WEBSITE AND ONLINE FORUMS, MBUSA HAS FAILED TO ASSIST CUSTOMERS WITH THESE ISSUES, IN MOST CASES CITING THAT VEHICLES ARE PAST WARRANTY COVERAGE AND THEREFORE THE OWNERS MUST COVER THE COST OF REPAIR. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE SINCE IT APPEARS TO BE A FACTORY DEFECT, RATHER THAN "WEAR AND TEAR" THAT THE CUSTOMER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR. MERCEDES BENZ MUST PAY FOR THIS PROBLEM, NOT THE CUSTOMER.
WHEN ENTERING THE VEHICLE AFTER IT HAS BEEN SITTING FOR A PERIOD OF TIME THERE IS THE SMELL OF GASOLINE THAT LINGERS UNTIL THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN RUN FOR A SHORT TIME. IT HAPPENS NO MATTER HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN THE TANK BUT IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL OF THE TIME. IT CAN GO A WEEK OR MORE SOMETIMES AND NOT HAPPEN AND THEN OCCUR FOR SEVERAL DAYS STRAIGHT. *TR

A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE WAS EMITTED BY THE CAR. TAKEN TWO TIMES TO BE REPAIRED, AND THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CAR WAS TAKEN BACK TO BE REPAIRED A THIRD TIME. THE DEALER INFORMED THE GAS TANK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS FOR THE ENGINE, LIGHTING, FUEL INJECTION AND REST OF CRITICAL FUNCTIONS OF THE VEHICLE HAS DISINTEGRATED DUE TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER HAS USED AN INFERIOR AND UNSUITABLE INSULATION FOR THE WIRES, WHICH, IS BRITTLE, CRACKING AND FALLING OFF EXPOSING BARE WIRES, CREATING AN EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS SITUATION. THE WIRE INSULATION DETERIORATION IS CAUSING THE WIRES TO SHORT AND PREVENTS THE VEHICLE FROM FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY. THIS IS CREATING A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. (POSSIBLE, FIRE IN ENGINE, ETC). DUE TO THE SERIOUSNESS, I RECOMMEND THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION ORDER THE MANUFACTURE TO PROPERLY INVESTIGATE AND ISSUE A SAFETY RECALL. I AM GREATLY CONCERNED. I SMELL GAS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF MY MERCEDES E500 2006 MODEL. THE MECHANIC TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SECOND DEALER WHERE THEY PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST THAT CONCLUDED THAT THE ENGINE VACUUM PUMP WAS LEAKING OIL AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 32,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 31,000.
