FAILURE OF THE BALANCE SHAFT (DEFECTIVE) CAUSING LOSS OF ENGINE TIMING AND ENGINE SKIPS AND STALLS. MERCEDES BENZ HAS CONCEDED IN TECH BULLETINS TO THEIR DEALER REPAIR SHOPS THAT THIS IS A COMMON DEFECT FOR 2005-2007 E-350 AND OTHER MODELS. THE DEALER REPAIRED MY CAR AND MB PAID 60% OF THE BILL AS A CONCESSION. REPAIR REQUIRED 30 HOURS OF LABOR (REMOVAL OF ENGINE, REPLACEMENT OF BALANCE SHAFT AND OTHER PARTS AND THEN REINSTALLATION OF ENGINE). COST WAS $4,000 AND MY OUT OF POCKET WAS $1,900. *TR
2006 MERCEDES BENZ M272/M273 ENGINE. *BALANCE SHAFT ISSUE* OUR 2006 E350 MERCEDES BENZ WAS JUST DIAGNOSED THAT IT NEEDED THE BALANCE SHAFT REPLACED, A $5000-$8000 DOLLAR REPAIR. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT MANY MERCEDES COSTUMERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. INFACT A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED SPECIFICALLY DUE TO THIS ISSUE AND IT SEEMS THAT THIS ENGINE PART IS FAULTY. *TR
2006 MERCEDES BENZ E350 4MATIC WAGON. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DIAGNOSIS. CAMSHAFT TIMING RETARDED. VEHICLE NEEDS BALANCE SHAFT GEAR (WORN OUT). ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIR - $5,643.00. POTENTIAL CATASTROPHIC INCIDENT COULD HAPPEN AT ANYTIME. VEHICLE COULD MESS UP GEAR/TIMING CHAIN AND CAUSE ENGINE TO FAIL AND LOSS OF ALL POWER RELATED TO ENGINE. *TR
I OWN A MERCEDES BENZ 2006 E350 AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AT AROUND 54K MILES. HAD IT CHECK OUT AT THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED IT WAS A CAMSHAFT SENSOR, I HAD THEM REPLACE IT AT A COST OF $550. NOW AT 57K MILES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME ON WITH THE EXACT SAME CODE, CAMSHAFT SENSOR. UPON RESEARCH THIS IS AN ENGINE/ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE. THIS IS A BALANCE SHAFT ISSUE COMMON ON THE M272 MERCEDES BENZ E350 BUILT B/T 2005-10. COST TO FIX IS DOCUMENTED @ $5,000-$8,000. *TR
EXTREMELY DANGEROUS: YESTERDAY 1/19/11 WHILE DRIVING ~35-40MPH AND PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL, MY 2006 MERCEDES BENZ ML350 SUDDENLY &RAPIDLY DECELERATED WHILE MAKING A LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND THE AUTO GAVE THE MESSAGE THAT THE AIRBAGS WERE DEACTIVATED BY THE CAR. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A FATAL ACCIDENT FOR ME HAD I BEEN ON THE BUSY HIGHWAY. I TOOK THE AUTO TO THE DEALERSHIP- MERCEDES BENZ HONOLULU AND THEY OFFERED VERY LITTLE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT TO THE DEFECTIVENESS OF THE AUTO AND WOULDN'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. ANOTHER MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE IS A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, MY HUSBAND USED NORMAL FORCE TO PULL THE ADJUSTMENT LEVER FOR THE STEERING WHEEL TILT, AND IT CAME CLEAN OFF OF THE PANEL. HE PUT THE LEVER BACK INTO PLACE AN IT FELL ALL THE WAY INTO THE PANEL! THIS HAS CAUSED THE TILT TO BE PERMANENTLY LOOSE AND UNABLE TO BE LOCKED INTO PLACE. AGAIN, THE MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY WHATSOEVER. THE REPAIR QUOTE THAT WAS OFFERED WAS $1475.00 FOR THE TILT REPAIR- THIS IS OVERCHARGING AND PRICE PROHIBITIVE. SHOULDN'T MERCEDES BENZ ACKNOWLEDGE THE SAFETY ISSUES, REPORT THEM SO THAT THEY DON'T RECUR IN OTHER VEHICLES? THESE ISSUES COULD CAUSE PASSENGER DEATH. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER LIGHT INDICATING CHECK OIL LEVEL AT NEXT REFUELING. HAD VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY EXAMINED BY MERCEDES BENZ DEALER. ENGINE OIL LEVEL OKAY. NO CODES CAME UP FOR OIL SENSOR. CAR HAS 66,239 MILES. WAS TOLD BY MBZ DEALER THAT BALANCE SHAFT NEEDS REPLACEMENT DUE TO SPROCKET FAILURE (COMING APART); GEAR IS WORN. NEEDS $6,200 OF REPAIR. CALLED MERCEDES BENZ OF NORTH AMERICA WHO SAID THAT TO DATE, NO RECALLS OR CAMPAIGNS HAVE BEEN INITIATED FOR THIS COMPLAINT. CAR HAS BEEN MAINTAINED ACCORDING TO MBZ SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE USING MBZ SYNTHETIC OIL AND MBZ PARTS, IF AND WHEN NECESSARY. THE INTERNET IS REPLETE WITH COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME TYPE FROM ALL OVER U.S. AND CANADA. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ONLY WHEN REFUELING TO FULL CAPACITY, A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL EMITTED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS A SMALL AMOUNT OF FUEL FOUND ON THE GROUND NEXT TO THE VEHICLE ON VARIOUS OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO STATED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE FUEL TANK AND THE FILLER NECK VALVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000. UPDATED 05/23/2013 *JS
MY 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E-350 CONTINUE TO HAVE STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE INSIDE. THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SEVERAL TIMES BUT THE DEALER REFUSES TO FIX IT. *TR
WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS FILLED THERE IS A STRONG SMELL OF FUEL UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR WHEEL BASE AND IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT WITH ON OCCASION A SMALL LEAKAGE OF FUEL ON THE FLOOR. I HAVE SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND SIMILAR PROBLEMS ON SEVERAL W211 CARS. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM AND THEY ARE NO HELP EXCEPT TO SAY IT WILL COST AROUND $2000 TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. I DID FIND THAT THERE WAS SOME CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN THE NHTSA THIS YEAR IN APRIL CONCERNING THIS MATTER BUT DID NOT KNOW THE OUTCOME AND MERCEDES IS NOT WILLING TO HELP AT THIS TIME. THANK YOU *TR
THE FUEL LEAKED ONTO THE GROUND, ONTO THE EXHAUST, AND THE SMELL WAS INSIDE THE VEHICLE CABIN. WE GOT THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY REPLACED BUT WE STILL HAVE A FUEL CAP FAILURE NOW WITH NO RESULT. THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW PRESENT & USING A BAND-AID FOR THE PROBLEM WILL NOT SOLVE ANYTHING. *TR
ON GAS FILLED UP, THE ENTIRE GARAGE SMELL OF STRONG GASOLINE SMELL THAT CAN CAUSE NAUSEA AND DIZZINESS IF GARAGE DOOR IS NOT OPENED TO ALLOW FRESH AIR, MECHANICS SAID THERE IS A LEAK IN THE FUEL SYSTEM AND SIMILAR CAR OWNERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. SMELL WILL GO AWAY WHEN THE FUEL LEVEL IS BELOW 7/8 LEVEL. I STARTED HAVING THIS PROBLEM AT AROUND 40,000 MILES AND CURRENTLY AROUND 48,000, I HARDLY USE THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE SMELL AND SAFETY CONCERN. MERCEDES SHOULD RECALL THIS DEFECTS FOR EPA, SAFETY AND HEALTH CONCERNS BEFORE ANY INCIDENCE AND RESULTING CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. *TR
I HAVE HAD MY MERCEDES E350 FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS. I PURCHASED USED AND THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 70,000 MILES ON IT. I GOT A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO 3 MECHANICS. THE FAULT CODES COME UP AS P00017 AND P00018. THEY ARE TELLING ME I NEED TO REMOVE THE ENGINE AND REBUILD THE CAMSHAFT (ESTIMATED COST $5,000 -$6,000). I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ON LINE AND FOUND MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME VEHICLE THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME RESULT. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH MY LOCAL MERCEDES DEALER AND THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT OFFER NO ASSISTANCE TO REPAIR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD SHUTTER, JERK AND LUNGE FORWARD ABNORMALLY WHEN TRAVELING OVER 28 MPH. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED, BUT DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIRS TO THE DEFECT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000.

STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE INSIDE & OUTSIDE OF CAR FOR 2-3 DAYS AFTER GAS FILL UP. CAR INTO MERCEDES BENZ OF PEMBROKE PINES FL. OCT. 10, 2010. REPLACED L/SIDE FUEL SENDER UNIT. STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE REMAINED SO STRONG COULD NOT DRIVE MORE THAN A FEW BLOCKS OR PARK IN GARAGE. CAR BACK TO MERCEDES NOV. 5, 2010. DIAGNOSIS - FAULTY GAS TANK VENT. REPLACED GAS TANK GOT CAR BACK NOV. 13, 2010. REPAIRS WELL OVER $2000. EVEN THOUGH CAR EMITTED GAS SMELL DETECTABLE FROM 50 FEET, AND CLEARLY UNHEALTHY TO DRIVE, NOT CONSIDERED EMISSION ISSUE. FUEL TANK SEALS ARE LEAKING CAUSING A SAFETY HAZARD. WHEN I PARK IN MY GARAGE THERE IS A GASOLINE SMELL. THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER OPERATES AT A HIGH TEMP. MAKING THE CAR UNSAFE IN A CLOSED IN PLACE. DEALER MERCEDES-BENZ OF NORTH PALM BEACH SAID THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE REPAIR COST IS $680. SAFER A BATTLE THEY OFFERED $217 CREDIT. I REFUSED TO PAY FOR A REPAIR ON A CAR THAT IS UNDER WARRANTY AND HAS A SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT. *TR

CHECK ENGINE CAME ON I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THE DEALER STATED THAT IT WAS A FAULTY BALANCE SHAFT GEAR AND I RECEIVED A $5000 (FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS) ESTIMATE FOR REPAIR. I TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, HE TRIED TO REPLACE THE CAMSHAFT EXHAUST BUT THE ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON, HE THEN DETERMINED THE SAME PROBLEM FAULTY BALANCE SHAFT GEAR... MY CAR IS ONLY 74000 MILES NOW, SO MUCH FOR A MERCEDES BENZ CAR UNDER 100,000 MILES..HOPE THIS TO BE A RECALL. *TR

THERE WAS STRONG GAS ODOR AFTER FILLING UP THE CAR WITH GAS. THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE WOULD SMELL OF GAS UNTIL THE GAS TANK REACHED BELOW APPROXIMATELY 70% LEVELS. AFTER PARKING IN THE GARAGE, IT SMELLED AS THERE WAS A GAS LEAK. THIS WOULD NOT OCCUR IF THE WE DIDN'T FILL UP THE GAS TANK. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES BENZ E350. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER REFUELING THE VEHICLE, A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE WAS EMITTED. THE ODOR WOULD DISSIPATE ONCE THE AMOUNT OF FUEL WITHIN THE TANK DROPPED BELOW THREE-QUARTERS FULL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE FUEL TANK WAS LOWERED. THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A FAULTY GASKET ON THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. THE GASKET WAS REPLACED, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN BACK TO BE REPAIRED A THIRD TIME. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
FAULTY BALANCE SHIFT AND IDLE GEAR. REPLACED MANY COMPONENTS TO RECTIFY THE ISSUE ONLY TO FIND A STAR BULLETIN WAS AVAILABLE FOR THE FIX. ORIGINAL FOUND WHILE VEHICLE WAS UNDER WARRANTED AND TECHNICIAN FAILED TO FIX. NOW THAT CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, WILL INCUR A 6K FIX ON WHAT SEEMS TO BE DEFECTIVE OR SUBSTANDARD PARTS (BALANCE SHAFT SPROCKET AND THE TIMING CHAIN GUIDE WHEEL(IDLER)
PREMATURE WEAR ON THE INSIDE CORNER OF MY TIRES. THIS WAS ULTIMATELY DISCOVERED ON ALL FOUR TIRES. THIS LEAD TO BELT SEPARATION ON ALL TIRES AND A LOST OF BELTING ON THE LEFT FRONT OF THE CAR THAT CAUSED DRIVER SURPRISE THAT DEMANDED A DRAMATIC EMERGENCY STOP. THIS EXPOSED ME TO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WHILE PULLING OVER IN A SHOCKED AND CONCERNED STATE. THESE TIRES WERE RECOMMENDED FOR MY CAR BY THE RETAILER AND MET BOTH THE SPEED RATING AND PERFORMANCE REQUIRED. HOWEVER, I DON'T FEEL THEY SHOULD BE SOLD FOR THIS CAR BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE. THEY DON'T HOLD UP TO THE CHALLENGING DEMANDS OF THIS APPLICATION. THIS FAILURE IS DANGEROUS. HAD IT HAPPENED AT NIGHT OR ON A WET SURFACE, THE CONSEQUENCES WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE SEVERE. NOTE: THIS WAS ON A CAR THAT WAS FULLY IN ALIGNMENT, WITH FACTORY WHEELS AND SUSPENSION. THE CAR WAS DRIVEN ONLY AS A COMMUTER. NO RACING OR OTHER EXTREME DRIVING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 MERCEDES E350. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH IN REVERSE THE DRIVER HEARD A GRINDING NOISE. THE GRINDING NOISE WAS ALSO PRESENT WHEN MAKING TURNS AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MECHANIC STATED THE TRANSFER CASE HAD TO BE FLUSHED. THE FAILURE CONTINUED AND THE TRANSFER CASE WAS FLUSHED THREE TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THERE WAS A MANUFACTURERS RECALL BUT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000.
DEAR SIR/MADAM, I HAVE A SERIOUS COMPLAINT AGAINST THE CONTINENTAL CONTIPROCONTACT TIRES THAT CAME WITH MY MERCEDES BENZ E550 AND ALSO THE NEW ONES I RECENTLY PURCHASED. THE CAR HAS ONLY 20K MILES ON IT AND THE SIDE WALLS ON THE TIRES ARE VERY WEAK. I HAD 1 BUBBLE EACH DEVELOP ON 2 OF THE TIRES THAT CAME WITH THE CAR AFTER DRIVING OVER 2 SMALL POTHOLES RECENTLY. I ALSO HAD A SIDEWALL ISSUE ON THE THIRD TIRE THAT CAME WITH THE CAR AND THE NEW ONE I JUST PURCHASED. THE RECENT INCIDENT WAS THE WORST WHERE BOTH SIDEWALLS BURST OPEN WHEN I HIT A POT HOLE. I REALLY THINK THAT THE QUALITY OF THE TIRES IS VERY POOR BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO BE IMPACTING THE SIDEWALLS. I WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS THIS WITH SOMEONE AT THE SUPERVISOR AND DIRECTOR LEVEL BECAUSE THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS COMPLAINT. I AM ALSO GOING TO PLACE A COMPLAINT WITH THE INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT FOR THEIR LACK OF FIXING THESE POT HOLES ON-TIME. I AM THOROUGHLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE ROAD CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. THE CONTACT SUFFERED INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VHEICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 30,290.
ON MARCH 26TH AT 950 AM. MY E 350 MERCEDES BENZ 2006, ACCELERATED ON IT OWN ,CAUSING ME TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR AND CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK. I HIT A TRACTOR TRAILER AND A UTILITY POLE.. THE CAR WAS TOTALED AND I HAD INJURIES TO MY HANDS AND NECK. THE CAR WAS GOING AT HIGH SPEED DOWNHILL AND DID NOT STOP UNTIL THE FRONT TIRES COLLAPSED AFTER HITTING UTILITY POLE. *TR
ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS, MY CAR HAS EXPERIENCED FLAT TIRES DUE TO A CRACK IN THE WHEEL/RIM. I BELIEVE THE OEM RIMS MAY BE DEFECTIVE AS IT IS UNCHARACTERISTIC FOR A RIM TO CRACK, AND TO HAVE IT OCCUR TWICE IS EXTRAORDINARY. I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS A RESULT OF HITTING A POTHOLE, ETC. THE RESULTING FLAT TIRE WHICH OCCURRED ON A BUSY EXPRESSWAY CAUSED A HAZARDOUS DRIVING SITUATION. IN EACH CASE, DUE TO TIRE DAMAGE, I HAD TO REPLACE BOTH THE TIRE AND THE WHEEL/RIM AT A COST OF OVER $600 PER EVENT, OR ABOUT $1,200 TOTAL. SRS SYSTEM SHUT DOWN ON 2006 MERCEDES BENZ 350E 4-MATIC. LIGHT CAME ON DASH NOTIFYING ME OF THE FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM. TOOK TO DEALER WHO INFORMED ME OF CODE 9103 "RESISTANCE IN DRIVERS AIRBAG" INFORMED THAT HARNESS IN STEERING COLUMN WAS DESIGNED TOO SHORT AND WHEN STEERING WHEEL IS TELESCOPED OUT THE WIRE WILL EVENTUALLY BREAK SHUTTING DOWN THE SRS SYSTEM. REPLACEMENT PART # 211-440-4509 IS A LONGER HARNESS DEMONSTRATING THAT MERCEDES IS AWARE OF THE DEFECT. R&R REQUIRES REMOVAL OF STEERING COLUMN COVER, 3 HOURS OF LABOR, COSTING OVER $600 INCLUDING DIAGNOSIS. SINCE THE PROBLEM IS KNOWN TO THE MANUFACTURER AND RESULTS IN AN INEFFECTIVE SAFETY SYSTEM, THESE HARNESSES SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR

CAR'S (MERCEDES BENZ E350 SDN 2006) FUEL GAUGE SHOWED THAT THE TANK WAS HALF FULL. ABOUT TEN MINUTES INTO THE DRIVE, THE VEHICLE DECELERATED AUTOMATICALLY FROM 65 MPH TO 0 MPH. POLICE WERE CALLED TO PREVENT A PILE ON CRASH. TOWED CAR TO DEALER WHO FOUND THAT THERE WAS A GAUGE MALFUNCTION. REPLACED GAUGE. TWO MONTHS LATER, THE VERY SAME PROBLEM RECURS. LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE FUEL GAUGE IS UNRELIABLE CAN CREATE A SAFETY ISSUE ESPECIALLY IN FREEWAY DRIVING, THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOUR TIMES IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS TO FIX THESE ISSUES. WHILE FIXING THE SENSORS, THE CAR HAD A DISTINCT GASOLINE ODOR ESPECIALLY WHEN TANK WAS FULL. THE DEALER DID A SMOKE TEST AND CONCLUDED THAT THE TANK WAS LEAKING AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. NOW, WITH A NEW TANK, AND NEW SENSORS FOR FUEL SUPPLY, THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM RE-OCCURS. I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF A FUEL GAUGE MALFUNCTION. AUTO HAS LOW PROFILE MAG WHEELS. TWO RIGHT WHEELS CRACKED WHEN HIT A CURB IN SEPT 2009. TWO WHEELS AND 4 TIRES HAD TO BE REPLACED SEPT 10, 2009. THE FOLLOWING JUNE ONE OF THE REPLACED WHEELS DEVELOPED A CRACK. NOT KNOWN WHY CRACK DEVELOPED AS I DID NOT HIT ANY POTHOLES OR ANYTHING ELSE. THEN JUST THIS YEAR IN OCTOBER RIGHT FRONT WHEEL DEVELOPED A HAIRLINE CRACK CAUSING THE TIRE TO SLOWLY LOSE AIR. WHEEL HAD TO BE REPLACED. A SET OF MICHELIN TIRES WAS PURCHASED FROM COSTCO AND MOUNTED ON MY 2006 MERCEDES ABOUT ONE YEAR AGO. THE MORNING AFTER THE FIRST 6,000-MILE TIRE ROTATION, THE FRONT TIRE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE ON I-40 WEST OF ALBUQUERQUE, NM. COSTCO PAID FOR A REPLACEMENT TIRE AND DAMAGE TO THE RIM. THEN, ON MAY 13, 2009 ANOTHER ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SET OF MICHELIN TIRES SEPARATED IN A SIMILAR FASHION AGAIN ON I-40, NEARLY CREATING A MAJOR TRAFFIC FATALITY. THREE SEMI-TRUCKS ADEPTLY SWERVED TO AVOID COLLIDING WITH MY VEHICLE. THIS TIME, I HAD TO PAY $1,724 TO REPAIR DAMAGE TO THE SHOCK ABSORBER AND WHEEL WELL ON THE REAR END OF THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE COST ALSO INCLUDES $880 THAT I PAID FOR A NEW SET OF MICHELIN TIRES FROM THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP, WHICH INFORMED ME THAT THEIR TIRES WERE NOT COMPROMISED BY EXTENDED STORAGE IN WAREHOUSES (I.E., DRY-ROTTING). COSTCO OFFERED TO PUT ANOTHER NEW SET OF THEIR TIRES ON MY VEHICLE, BUT I REFUSED TO TAKE THE RISK OF HAVING OLD DRY-ROTTED TIRES PLACED ON MY VEHICLE AGAIN.
