Variable Valve Timing Camshaft KNOWN DEFECT rendering the car unusable at only 100K miles.
The driver-side seat belt retractor on my 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 (W213) has failed to fully retract, leaving significant slack across the driver's chest and lap. An authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer has diagnosed the issue as a failed seat belt motor. This component is part of the vehicle's electronic PRE-SAFE system. Because the belt no longer retracts into its stowed position or maintains tension, the vehicle is in a state of non-compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 209 (Seat Belt Assemblies). Specifically, it fails to meet the retraction requirements necessary to ensure the webbing properly locates on the occupant's body. Furthermore, the failure of the motor disables the PRE-SAFE tensioning function, which is a critical safety system. Despite being a safety component and the vehicle being less than 10 years old, the manufacturer has refused to remedy this safety defect under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. A non-retracting seat belt is an unreasonable risk to safety as it increases the probability of injury or ejection during a crash.
The rear backup camera intermittently will open for a second, display the rear view (when in reverse), then immediately closes. This often happens after the trunk has been opened / closed, as when we go shopping and put items in the trunk. Sometimes it resets when you turn off the ignition and restart the car.
The contact owns a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E43 AMG. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the front passenger’s side headlights intermittently inoperative. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer to be diagnosed; however, the diagnostic result was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.
I am filing a complaint regarding the loss of safety-related and remote vehicle features on my 2018 Mercedes-Benz E 400 due to discontinued cellular connectivity between Mercedes-Benz and T-Mobile, effective 12/31/2025. This vehicle is paid for, has low mileage, and is otherwise in excellent condition. However, Mercedes-Benz has notified owners that key features will stop working, including remote start and safety-related services accessed through the Mercedes-Me app. As a consumer, I pay a monthly subscription for these services. This is the second Mercedes-Benz vehicle I have owned where features were removed after purchase due to technology decisions made by the manufacturer and its partners. In addition, the app has been unreliable for a significant period of time, often failing to function properly even while the subscription was active. Rather than correcting the issue, the service is now being eliminated entirely. As a woman who travels, the loss of safety features is a serious concern. These systems were a factor in my decision to purchase this vehicle and brand. The removal of functionality reduces vehicle safety, usefulness, and value, leaving the consumer to absorb the loss or install third-party systems. I am not seeking reimbursement. I am seeking accountability. Vehicles should not lose safety or core functionality while still within their reasonable service life. Consumers should not bear the consequences of manufacturer technology decisions made years after purchase. I believe this issue impacts many owners and raises concerns about vehicle safety, consumer protection, and long-term support of installed systems.
The digital dash, which shows my speed, mileage, engine temperature, rims and fuel level goes blank. Then comes on for a few seconds and goes dark again. Vehicle only has 43k miles. MB dealer said this is not uncommon condition with the 2018 mb e400. Car is not safe to drive. MB dealer wants $6,100.00 to replace the unit. A software reboot will not work.
The contact owns a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400, equipped with Kumho Tires, Tire Line: Majesty Solus, Tire Size: 245/40/ZR19, DOT Number: 1Y07TYCJ9. The contact stated that upon inspection, it was discovered that tread on the front tires were blistering. The cause of the failure had not yet been determined. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the front tires had failed and needed to be replaced. The tires were not replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The tires were replacement tires. The tire failure mileage was 4,000. The vehicle failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.
The car did not give any warning before this issue came about. A matter of fact when I took it to the mechanic they were unable to do a diagnostic test because there were no error messages and check engine light never came on. After taking it to the dealership they were able to check the history and saw that the error code P061b00 shows that the clutch position switch module needs to be replaced. While driving in traffic the car went into N (neutral) and wouldn’t not go back in D (drive). It took several minutes of me trying to change gears but it eventually went into P (park). The vehicle is unable to change gears sometimes and this is unsettling because the safety of myself, my children and others is affected if I’m driving and the car goes into neutral all of a sudden with no warning or goes into park and is unable to move. This occurred several times within a two week span while my children were in the car and this could have ended very differently. I took it to a certified mechanic who provided an explanation based on the error code received and stated that this was a huge safety issues that needed to be addressed.
Sunroof shattered.
Check Engine Light, running fault code P052E71 - needs software update for N3/10 Engine control unit.
added information: the issue is the piston, it went off due to a bad part. Mercedes Benz knew about the issue with the type of engine M247. there is a class action lawsuit pending. But I'm reporting this because i didn't know and it happened to me just a month out of warranty. Now, the dealership is asking me to pay for the labor. the dealership is House Of Imports in Buena Park. This has to do with the piston failure.
Vehicle went into limp mode at 83,000 miles and it was due to the electronic valve body failing within the transmission. Dealership mentioned it shouldn’t happen in a vehicles lifetime, this includes maintenance at the right interval (60,000 miles), which mine was. I was quoted roughly $3,800 by the dealership but after speaking with corporate it was brought down to $2,600.
The emergency applied braking system was applied while driving the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E43 AMG on a city street, with no other car or obstacle in the way of the car. Fortunately, there was no other vehicle behind us when this happened. I had the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic who found no fault codes in the OBD system. He did update the system software of the car at that time.
This is NOT about my car with the VIN that I described. It is to report that my car saved my life thanks to ability to brake by itself when detecting accident. 2 months ago I almost collided with Tesla Cybertruck!. The reason that I almost was hit was that Tesla driver didn't yield at the intersection, and I did not see the fast-coming truck AT ALL because of how it is designed. I'm referring to lack of larger front, side and rear reflectors, etc. Existing lights are tiny, hidden and invisible at certain angles and lighting. Driver did not turn headlights on making this truck totally invisible because of its color, stainless steel that's grey and matching the color of light at that time of a day. I am very surprised that a vehicle like Tesla Cybertruck received certification to be driven on US public roads since it does not have a single reflector, red or orange, on either side or the rear/ front of the vehicle that's easily visible at all times and weather conditions endangering all public on the road. I would like to file a formal complaint against Tesla, DOT, NHTSA. Please inform me about the formal way of filing a complaint and all necessary forms that I will need to do so. This is in the best interest of all drivers, passengers and anybody who may get hurt or killed by this non-compliant vehicle. I have contacted Tesla via letter about 2 months ago but have not received any response from car Manufacturer who ultimately is responsible for designing dangerous vehicle, and DOT and other Agencies for issuing certification for a non-compliant vehicle. The contact owns a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E300. The contact stated while attempting to shift into drive, the transmission independently shifted to neutral. The contact attempted several times to shift into drive however, the transmission failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer. The vehicle was diagnosed with transmission failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified on the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 154,000.
The seat belts do not retract when taking them off.
Mercedes AMG wheels crack under normal driving conditions.
The contact owned a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E300. The contact stated that while driving 30 MPH, another vehicle leaving the parking lot pulled in front of the contact's vehicle, and the contact's vehicle crashed into the side of the other vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact's face and chest hit the steering wheel. The contact sustained soreness on the face, and from the shoulders down to the lower back and legs. The contact was currently dragging one leg while walking. The contact had received dental and medical assistance. Additionally, the contact underwent an MRI. The contact was informed that the third and fourth vertebrae were damaged. The vehicle was towed and totaled. A police report was filed. The dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle operated as designed. The failure mileage was unknown.
The back-up camera failed while in the middle of reversing. Screen went completely black and unresponsive. Putting the car in Park then back to Reverse didn't work, screen still black. Tried turning off the car and turning it back on, screen still black and no back-up camera when I put the car in Reverse. I tried turning on / off the infotainment system and no change, screen still black. Later in the day when I got back in the car, the screen came up MUCH slower than usual, but did eventually come back up. This has happened multiple times and I've taken it to the dealer multiple times for this, but they've not been able to fix it.
Mercedes Benz use low quality PCV regulator valve , it is a common failure problem, warranty will not be covered, Benz sells part replacement for around 350 USD and it require about 2000 in labor to be fixed on average
1) Car pushed forward while parking @ 3-4 miles/per hour Car was totaled 2) Air bags did not deploy 3) Problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by dealer 4) Component was not confirmed by manufacturer. Police was present, reported to Insurance 5) While crashing through a store front, the Lane changing warning was displayed
Alternator failed on my E400 cabriolet 23,000 miles resulting in car shutting down while engine running. Required a tow to dealer service area, 35 miles away.
Backup camera does not work sometimes. A picture of the camera with a slash mark across it comes up on a black command screen. This is a big safety issue when I back up
Two problems: 1. Axel grease found on carport cement multiple times. Mercedes refuses to look at the wheel bearings or axel. 2. Automatic steering wheel adjustment makes clunking noise. Mercedes refuses to replace until it fails. Both of those items should be covered under warranty which I think is why they refuse to fix them.
On August 12, 2023, my husband pulled into the E43 into the garage with my two kids. When my son got out of the car, he noticed smoke coming out of the front of the car and notified my husband. He popped the hood and tried to put it out with the fire extinguisher but the smoke got overwhelming and he called 911. Fire department came and put out the fire. After the incident we did a search to see if there was a recall we missed but we only found an article published by Mercedes in December 2021 acknowledging their cars may catch on fire but no recall was done.
According to the Mersedes dealer it is Engine Harness it is possible manufacture defect. Car has only 38900 miles on it.
When taking curves the vehicle is making a cracking noise but, mechanic said they don’t see anything. My W213 Mercedes Benz E300 just like all other Mercedes is have a “Crankcase” issue, it failed the engine keep revving but, not catching speed. I’ve seen multiple Mercedes is having that issues and it’s very common. My vehicle computer communication system failed to communicate with the key sometimes won’t start and will run out of power overnight mainly happen during winter times and when it rains.
yellow check engine light came on and a few days later the car stalled on the road potentially causing an accident. took it to a shop and it has a p052e (crankcase valve issue), then took it to mercedes and theyve confirmed that oil has been leaking and it needs a new cvp ($3000) AND oil has leaked into the engine harness ($4000) but a few other indie shops have mentioned that id probably also have to replace the thermostat because thats usually damaged as well. You can google this issue and see that its insanely common, dangerous, and a huge financial burden on mercedes owners. There should be an immediate recall. See the inspection here: https://app.mykaarma.com/service-cart/mpi/8RlVgZhzCNsvpezrI1ZEEtxKAPluMxrUUivaOkycfRg/detail
Passenger seatbelt does not latch to the buckle. Therefore I am unable to have passengers in my vehicle. And when I do it becomes a huge safety issue. No mechanic can seem to figure out what is wrong with it.
While the vehicle was parked, at approximately 6:15 pm on June 11, 2022 while I was retrieving my iPod that was on the cupholder of my wife’s car, I got cut on the back of my right hand by the chrome plating lining the top part of the cupholder. The cut was painful and was one centimeter long. After I got cut I noticed that the chrome plating around the cupholder was peeling off and was sharp to the touch. The peeling off was mainly on the middle to the left-hand side of the center console cupholder, it is razor sharp and very dangerous. Please warn other drivers about this danger. It would be especially dangerous if someone gets cut while driving the car. It seems other Mercedes Benz owners have had this issue too: Here - https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w205/724605-interior-chrome-trim-flaking.html And here - https://mbworld.org/forums/w213-amg/810641-ashtray-cup-holder-trim.html This problem is similar to one I had experienced years ago on the door handle of a Hyundai Sonata I used to own, with peeling sharp chrome edge on interior drivers door handle - https://www.autoblog.com/amp/2009/05/26/hyundai-recalling-over-91-000-sonata-sedans-due-to-sharp-chro/
In April 2022, I purchased a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E300 4MATIC from CarMax in Tinley Park, Illinois. After the purchase, I discovered several unresolved issues that compromised the vehicle's safety and reliability. Key components, including the battery and alternator, were defective. Mercedes-Benz confirmed the battery had not been replaced since 2018, despite CarMax’s assurance that it was new. This defect contributed to electrical system malfunctions, affecting the vehicle’s performance. Additionally, CarMax conducted substandard repainting on the backseat. The peeling paint transferred to my clothing while driving, causing financial losses and embarrassment. Issues with the rims were also mishandled, further compromising the vehicle's quality. CarMax failed to disclose unresolved safety recalls affecting critical vehicle systems, and their inadequate repairs and omissions put my safety at risk. These defects have caused significant inconvenience, financial loss, and concerns about the vehicle’s reliability. Despite requests, CarMax has not adequately addressed these issues. CarMax acquired the vehicle in 2021 from its first owner, who had purchased it in 2018. At the time of acquisition, the vehicle had been driven 45,069 miles. When I purchased it in 2022, the odometer read 57,925 miles, indicating that CarMax operated the vehicle for 12,856 miles. This period of use was later discovered to involve its usage as a loaner vehicle, a fact not disclosed during the transaction. Upon taking possession of the vehicle, I became aware of several safety issues that were not disclosed, including unresolved recalls affecting key components of the vehicle. Despite the critical nature of these recalls, CarMax sold the vehicle without addressing these defects or informing me of their existence. Omission of Material Safety Information: CarMax failed to disclose the vehicle’s use as a loaner car and any associated wear and tear, which likely exacerbated the safety risks.
Recurrent crankshaft ventilation valve failures. Replaced 14 months ago and has failed again. This is a common and known issue with vehicles in E class from 2017 through 2019 and Mercedes has not issued a recall. Perhaps because it costs $3500 to replace it if out of warranty. Entire system replaced Feb 17, 2022 and has failed again (April 6th, 2023)
I bought this 2018 e43 amg at 24k miles ,still under warranty ,and when I first told by dealer that there's a crack on my wheel I have to replace it ,I thought it was my driving even though I can't think of getting in a pothole whatsoever,so I shop around and found a random shop ,they showed me a picture of the exact same car of same year with the same problem on the same size 20in wheel ,crack on the oem wheels , I was thinking this is strange ,but I choose to trust the mb quality. Later on there's a noise coming from back seat ,I went to dealer and try to find out ,they did a good job found out they need to replace the whole rare end,and also found 2 wheels bent including the new wheel I just replaced, and another crack on one of the rare wheel which I think caused by the rare end issue ,and they did ,but the very second day I got my car back ,the noise is still there and getting worse ,Itried to contact the advisor to find out what's going on ,but he hangout on me and never call back ,I don't want to take any risk for them to say it's my driving that Hurst the rare end again which I drove really carefully,so I had to go back to dealer on the same day and have it quick checked ,the same advisor talked to me saying we replaced with the item that we ordered from mb directly and makes me feel like they are trying to blame me ,and using we don't have loaner car , it's gonna take a long time ,we are busy kind of excuses to make me go away but I insisted to have it checked, after 1 or 2 hours ,they told me they gonna order another rare end for me without telling me what's wrong ,but still let me drive it home . They noise and shaking is becoming worse only after 200 miles I was driving,so something wrong with the rare end of 2018 e43 amg and wheels too. With 1 whole rare end ,2 new wheels , still, problem not solved at all.
WHEN DRIVING ON AN OPEN 2 LANE COUNTY ROAD AT APPROXIMATELY 35-40 MPH THE AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING ENGAGED AND FULLY STOPPED THE CAR FOR NO REASON. THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE ROAD, I DID NOT HAVE CRUISE CONTROL ON. THE VEHICLE JUST STOPPED AND BEEPED. THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS AROUND, SO THANKFULLY I WAS NOT REAR ENDED, BUT THERE WERE NO IMPEDIMENTS IN THE ROAD TO CAUSE A BRAKING EVENT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 MERCEDES BENZ E400. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THEY WERE SMELLING A BURNING ODOR EMITTING FROM THE ENGINE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE AUTOMATIC DRIVING WAS ACTIVATED THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE TO HIGHER SPEEDS. THE CONTACT WOULD HAVE TO PRESS THE VEHICLES BRAKES OBSESSIVELY. THE VEHICLE'S SIDE VIEW MIRRORS ALSO FAILED TO ROTATE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN A FAMILY MEMBER WAS OBSERVING THE VEHICLE THEY FOUND THE ENGINE TO HAVE BEEN DAMAGED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER (MERCEDES-BENZ OF COCONUT CREEK 4250 FL-7, COCONUT CREEK, FL 3307; (954) 406-1167) WHO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S BATTERY HAD MALFUNCTIONED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND OPENED A CASE REGARDING THE MATTER. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE 21,000.
MB 2018 E300 WOULD STOP WITH ME IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC THE STOP AND START SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS AND DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO FIXED THE PROBLEM UNTIL I ALMOST GOT KILLED. I BOUGHT A 2018 MERCEDES BENZ E43 ABOUT A YEAR AGO WITH APPROXIMATELY 9,000 MILES. TODAY THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 22,000 MILES. IN THOSE 13,000 AND ABOUT ONE YEAR OF USE THE VEHICLE HAS DAMAGED THREE FRONT WHEELS AND FOUR FRONT TIRES. THE FIRST WHEEL HAD A 1.5' TRANSVERSE CRACK ALONG THE INNER RIM LIP AND WAS NOTICED BY ME ONLY 1,000 MILES OR LESS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THIS NECESSITATED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE RIM AND THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TWO FRONT TIRES. THE SECOND WHEEL THAT WAS DAMAGED HAD A 6'-7' AND POSSIBLY LONGER LONGITUDINAL CRACK (SEE PHOTOS) ALONG THE INNER LIP THAT INDICATES THAT THE RIM FAILED STRUCTURALLY AND ALMOST CATASTROPHICALLY. THIS PARTICULAR FRONT RIGHT RIM WAS REPLACED ALONG WITH THE TIRE THAT WAS ALSO DAMAGED ON OCTOBER 10, 2020. TWO WEEKS LATER THE SAME WHEEL / TIRE ASSEMBLY WAS DAMAGED AGAIN. THIS TIME THE RIM WAS BENT AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON. THIS VEHICLE UNDER TYPICAL AND CONSERVATIVE DRIVING CONDITIONS AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH WITH THE SUSPENSION SET ON 'COMFORT' HAS DAMAGED THREE FRONT WHEELS AND FOUR FRONT TIRES. AS A RESULT OF THESE REPEATED AND CONTINUAL FAILURES OF THE FRONT WHEEL / TIRE ASSEMBLIES IT HAS BECOME RATHER CLEAR THAT THESE 20' DIAMETER WHEELS FAIL STRUCTURALLY BECAUSE THEY ARE MARGINAL IN TERMS OF YIELD STRENGTH AND HAVE ZERO ROAD HAZARD IMPACT RESISTANCE BUILT INTO THEM. THIS DEFECT MAKES THESE WHEEL / TIRE ASSEMBLIES AND THE ENTIRE VEHICLE VERY UNSAFE TO OPERATE BECAUSE A CATASTROPHIC WHEEL / TIRE ASSEMBLY FAILURE CAN OCCUR AT ANY TIME. AN INVESTIGATION OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE IS MANDATORY. THE CONFIGURATION AND USE OF 20' WHEELS WITH LOW-PROFILE RUN-PLAT PIRELLI TIRES ON THE 2018 E43 IS HIGHLY DEFECTIVE BECAUSE IT CAN CAUSE CATASTROPHIC WHEEL / TIRE ASSEMBLY FAILURE, LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND LOSS OF LIFE.
ON MAY 30, 2020, AROUND 3 PM, MY SON WAS THE DRIVER AND MY WIFE AND I WERE THE PASSENGERS DRIVING IN JERSEY CITY, NJ (USA). WHILE CHANGING LANES ON THE ROAD, THE CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED FUNCTIONING. ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON AND IT SHOWED A CAR WITH ZIG ZAG LINES AND STATED INOPERABLE. WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IN A DANGEROUS SITUATIONS WITH CARS GOING AROUND US. THE STEERING WHEEL FROZE AND THE BRAKES WERE NOT FUNCTIONING. WE TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR MANY TIMES WITH THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS COMING ON AND STATING INOPERABLE. AFTER A LITTLE WHILE, WE WERE ABLE TO PLACE IT IN NEUTRAL AND PUSH THE CAR TO SAFETY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHILE STILL BLOCKING A LANE. WE THEN CALLED THE MERCEDES SERVICE CENTER WHERE A TECHNICIAN TRIED TO HELP US VIA TELEPHONE BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AND FINALLY 2 HOURS LATER, WE HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. THE FAMILY HAD TO TAKE UBER HOME. THE CAR HAS BEEN TOWED TO RAY CATENA MERCEDES IN UNION, NJ, USA AND WE RECEIVED A CALL THIS MORNING THAT THEY WILL INSPECT IT LATER ON TODAY. THE REASON I AM BRINGING THIS INCIDENT TO YOUR ATTENTION IS THAT THE CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND WE WERE LUCKY THAT WE WERE NOT INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT OR HAD ANY INJURIES BUT WOULD LIKE YOU TO BE AWARE TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING TO ANY OTHER MERCEDES OWNER AS IT COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS IN NATURE. *TR
The contact owns a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the message "Inoperable Headlight" was displayed, and the passenger's side headlight became inoperable. The contact stated that he was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to dealer who added an unknown gas inside the headlight. However, the failure reoccurred with the driver's side headlight six months later. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who added the unknown gas inside the headlight, however, the failure reoccurred months later with the passenger's side. The contact stated that the failure persisted with both the driver's side and the passenger's side headlights. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that there was water leaking inside the headlights and they could not replace the headlights because the manufacturer would not cover the cost of the repair. The dealer informed the contact that he would need to pay a repair fee. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 23,700.
The contact owns a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E300. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, wind was entering through the passenger’s side sunroof. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where they informed the contact that the vehicle was working as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 34,000.
I BOUGHT THIS 2018 VEHICLE WITH 9,000 MILES. I NOTICED AFTER COUPLE WEEKS THAT THE VEHICLE WAS LEAKING AIR FROM THE LEFT FRONT TIRE. AT THAT POINT THE CAR LESS THAN 10,000 MILES. I FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE FRONT LEFT ALLOY WHEEL HAD DEVELOPED A 1.5" LONG CRACK AT THE INSIDE LIP OF THE WHEEL AND IT WAS LEAKING AIR FROM THERE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND ASKED THEM TO INSTALL A NEW RIM AT NO COST TO ME. THEY REFUSED TO DO THAT BUT THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD REPAIR THE RIM (WELD IT) AND THAT IT WOULD BE AS GOOD AS NEW. TODAY, ON 04/17/2020 I TOOK THE CAR TO REPLACE THE TWO FRONT TIRES BECAUSE THEY WERE WORN AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT AT LESS THAN 16,000 MILES. WHEN THE TIRE SHOP TECHNICIAN PUT THE TIRE WITH THE REPAIRED RIM ON THE BALANCE MACHINE HE DISCOVERED THAT THIS ALLOY RIM WAS BENT OUT OF SHAPE AND WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON. I AM A PH.D. IN MECHANICAL / AEROSPACE ENGINEERING AND GIVEN MY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS VEHICLE, I AM CONFIDENT THAT THE FRONT RIMS OF THIS VEHICLE ARE NOT STRUCTURALLY SOUND BECAUSE THEY CANNOT SUPPORT THE LOADS THEY ARE SUBJECTED TO UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, THEY SLIGHTLY DEFORM AS A RESULT OF THE CORNERING LOADS THEY ARE SUBJECTED AND CRACK AT THE INSIDE LIP WHERE THE WHEEL HAS LESS STRUCTURAL SUPPORT. LARGER CORNERING LOADS ARE USUALLY APPLIED TO THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL AND THIS IS WHY MY LEFT FRONT WHEEL FAILED AT LESS THAN 10,000 MILES. THE LOADS APPLIED TO FRONT WHEELS ARE EXACERBATED BY THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH STIFF RUN FLAT TIRES AND A STIFF SUSPENSION THAT DOES NOT ABSORB CORNERING LOADS BUT DELIVERS THEM RIGHT ONTO THE RIM, WHICH IS NOT STRUCTURALLY SOUND AND UNABLE TO TAKE THESE CORNERING LOADS, DEFORMS AND CRACKS AT THE INSIDE LIP. I ASK YOU TO PLEASE INITIATE AN INVESTIGATION OF THIS RATHER UNSAFE CONDITION THAT CAN RESULT IN COMPLETE LEFT FRONT (OR RIGHT) RIM FAILURE AND LOSS OF LIFE.
I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE RECENTLY WITH 9,000 MILES IN. AFTER I TOOK THE VEHICLE HOME, I REALIZED THAT THE FRONT LEFT TIRE WAS SLOWLY LEAKING AIR. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL TIRE SHOP AND ASK THEM TO REMOVE THE TIRE FROM THE VEHICLE AND PUT IT IN WATER BATH TO SEE WHERE IT WAS LEAKING AIR FROM BECAUSE I COULD NOT FIND A NAIL OR OTHER ROAD HAZARD ON THE TIRE. IT TURNS OUT THE ALLOY RIM OF THIS AMG E43 MERCEDES BENZ HAD A 1.5' LONG CRACK AT THE INSIDE LIP OF THE RIM AND IT WAS LEAKING AIR FROM THERE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY TO THE DEALER AND I ASKED THEM TO REPLACE THIS RIM AT NO COST SINCE I JUST HAD PURCHASED THIS EXPENSIVE CAR. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD NOT PAY FOR A NEW RIM BUT THAT THEY WOULD WELD IT AT NO COST AND IT WOULD BE AS GOOD AS NEW. I LET THEM WELD IT THEREFORE. TODAY, ON 4/17/2020 I TOOK THE CAR TO THE TIRE SHOP TO CHANGE THE FRONT TIRES BECAUSE THEY WERE WORN. THE FRONT TIRES WERE SHOT AT 16,000 MILES. WHEN THE TIRE SHOP PUT THE WELDED RIM ON THE BALANCE MACHINE AFTER INSTALLING THE NEW TIRE, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE RIM WAS BENT WHERE IT WAS WELDED. THE TIRE SHOP EXPLAINED THAT THIS RIM WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER AND I ASKED THEM TO REPLACE THE RIM THAT THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY FIXED AND NOW FOUND TO BE BENT. THEY TOLD ME THAT 'THEY GET MANY MERCEDES RIMS THAT ARE CRACKED AND BENT' AND REFUSED TO REPLACE THE RIM. THE RIM IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE ON. IT WAS NOT DAMAGED BY A POTHOLE BUT IT CRACKED AT THE INSIDE LIP BECAUSE THESE RIMS ARE USED WITH STIFF LOW PROFILE RUN FLAT TIRES AND STIFF SUSPENSIONS AND ARE NOT DESIGNED TO TAKE THE LOADS THAT THEY ARE SUBJECTED TO UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. I AM A PH.D. IN MECHANICAL / AEROSPACE ENGINEERING AND I ASSURE YOU THAT THESE RIMS ARE NOT STRUCTURALLY SOUND, ARE THEREFORE UNSAFE AND MUST BE RECALLED BECAUSE THE STRUCTURAL FAILURE OF THESE RIMS IS AN IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE.
THIS NOTE REGARDS COMPLAINT NUMBER: 11301860, WHICH I PREVIOUSLY REPORTED. PLEASE REFER TO IT FOR INFORMATION. MERCEDES-BENZ TOOK THE VEHICLE TO M-B FAYETTEVILLE, NC ON 1-31-20 AND RETURNED IT ON 2-3-20. AFTER ONLY 54 MILES, THE VEHICLE IS PERFORMING EXACTLY AS IT DID WHEN I FIRST REPORTED THIS ISSUE. IN MY VIEW, THE DEFICIENCIES CAN LEAD TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. IT'S ELECTRONIC "SAFETY" ASSIST FACILITIES LULLS ONE INTO A DEPENDENCY AND FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY. THEN, THEY STOP WORKING WHEN THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN ON BUSY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS.
MY VEHICLE IS A 2018 MERCEDES-BENZ E63S. ON THE HIGHWAY OR IN TOWN, IT REPORTS "BRAKE-ASSIST INOPERABLE; BLIND SPOT ASSIST INOPERABLE; DISTANCE ASSIST INOPERABLE"; PLUS, THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS STOPPED WORKING. THE TROUBLE OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY. THEY ARE NOT FALSE MESSAGES. THE ITEMS REPORTED DO STOP WORKING. THAT'S EXCEEDINGLY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE ESTABLISHES A FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY.
