INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FAILURE. ALL LIGHTING FOR INSTRUMENT DARK/UNREADABLE (SPEEDOMETER,TACH,ODOMETER,FUEL,TEMP,TURN SIGNAL ETC). TAKEN TO DEALER AND I PAID FOR REBUILD TO UNIT. IDENTICAL FAILURE OCCURED AGAIN AFTER APPROX 3 MONTHS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S-CLASS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS MALFUNCTIONED. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE HOW FAST THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING OR DETERMINE ANY OF THE OTHER READINGS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN I.D. 06V028000 (INTERIOR LIGHTING) AND CALLED THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE RECALL WAS CLOSED DUE TO THE YEAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 111,000.
SECOND AIRMATIC BREAKDOWN. FIRST WAS FRONT SIDE LAST JULY 2012. SECOND BREAKDOWN AUGUST 28, 2013 REAR PUMP LEFT SIDE. THIS PROBLEM IS GETTING REAL EXPENSIVE. DO ALL MERCEDES DO THIS? *JB
ON STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS BLACK WITHOUT ILLUMINATION OR READING. AS A RESULT, GAUGES TO SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, FUEL, WARNINGS TO MALFUNCTIONS, TACHOMETER, OIL PRESSURE, & ENGINE TEMPERATURE ARE NOT PRESENT. *TR
THE GEAR SHIFTER HAD LOCKED INITIALLY OUT OF THE BLUE, I COULDN'T GET THE CAR OUT OF DRIVE. I TURNED IT OFF TO STOP IT AND THEN IT WOULDN'T GO INTO PARK. AFTER THE MERCEDES TECH CAME OUT IT WOULDN'T START AT ALL. THE TECH SAID IT WAS MOST LIKELY A SAFETY FEATURE WHICH HAD KICKED IN. THEN THE WHOLE RIGHT SIDE WENT DOWN. I AM TOLD THE AIRMATIC SUSPENSION WENT OUT. WHY? THE CAR SAID STOP AIRMATIC TO LOW. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WHICH MAY HAVE LEAD UP TO THESE ISSUES. UNFORTUNATELY I CAN NOT AFFORD THE $2,000 TO REPAIR THIS ISSUE WITH THE AIRMATIC. IS THERE ANY KIND OF RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE OR WARRANTY WITH MERCEDES THAT IS RESPONSIBLE. THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEM IS THE RADIO GOING OUT FOR 2-3 MONTHS AND THEN COMING BACK ON OUT OF THE BLUE. THE DOOR OPEN SIGNAL NOT GOING OFF IN THE ALERTS. THE TRUNK SWITCH NOT WORKING TO OPEN THE TRUNK, IT CAN ONLY BE OPENED MANUALLY. LASTLY THE HEADLIGHTS CONTINUALLY GOING OUT AFTER REPLACING THE BULB FOR 1 MONTH. RUST AND DETERIORATION ON THE ROOF BY THE SUNROOF. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S-CLASS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 58 MPH, ALL OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS AND GAUGES FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME AND THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS AN ELECTRONIC MALFUNCTION. THE MANUFACTURER CONFIRMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 98500.
CLUSTER IN DASH BLEW OUT. *TR
WE HAD TO HAVE OUR CAR TOWED FROM INSIDE THE CAR WASH BAY BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK. THE NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH, WHICH IS PLASTIC, BROKE PROHIBITING THE CAR FROM SHIFTING OUT OF PARK. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER MERCEDES BENZ ROADSIDE SENT TO US TOLD US HE SEES THIS ALL OF THE TIME WITH THIS PARTICULAR CAR. ALSO BY THE FORUMS, YOU CAN SEE THAT THIS IS A PARTICULAR PROBLEM FOR CERTAIN YEARS. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, THE NEW SHIFT BOX FROM MERCEDES HAS AN ALUMINUM SAFETY SWITCH OR "BILLET". WE ATTEMPTED TO BUY THE NEW "BILLET" BUT OUR MERCEDES BENZ DEALER WILL NOT SELL IT TO US. WE WERE TOLD HE HAD TO HAVE THEM TAKE THE ENTIRE THING APART DO THE WORK THEMSELVES FOR CLOSE TO $1000 FOR WHAT SHOULD BE A $00.50 PART. IN ORDER TO GET THE "BILLET" IT HAS TO BE BOUGHT AFTERMARKET ONLINE FOR CLOSE TO $200.00. OBVIOUSLY MERCEDES BENZ KNEW IT WAS AN ISSUE, THEREFORE CHANGING IT FROM PLASTIC TO ALUMINUM, SO THEY SHOULD BE CHANGING ALL PLASTIC ONES FOR FREE. *TR
MASSIVE OIL LEAK. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT'S EVERYTHING FROM OIL PRESSURE VALVES TO THE OIL COOLER. MB... WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?? I NEED HELP AND NONE OF THE SAN DIEGO MB DEALERS CAN FIX PROPERLY. *TR
MY 2002 MERCEDES S430 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER BACK LIGHTING WENT OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING AND I COULD NOT SEE MY RATE OF SPEED. ALONG WITH NOT SEEING MY RATE OF SPEED MY FUEL AND TEMPERATURE WAS NOT VISABLE. I CALLED MERCEDES DEALER IN VIRGINIA ABOUT THE RECALL THAT CAME OUT IN 2006 AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED. LOOKING ON THE INTERNET THERE IS A 10 YEAR EXTENSION BUT I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS FROM THE TIME THE CAR WAS MANUFACTURED. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH IN MY LIFE AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE BOTTOM LINE TRUTH TO THIS SITUATION. *TT
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S55 AMG. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT THE VEHICLE OUT OF PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL SHOP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE SHIFTER WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 118,000.
MERCEDES BENZ HAS LISTED A RECALL ON ALL W220 MERCEDES-BENZ VEHICLES. THE RECALL WAS ABOUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FAILING RESULTING IN THE CLUSTER TO NOT WORK. THE MPH, RPM DOESN'T WORK. NOTHING ON THE CLUSTER WORKS. WHEN I WENT ON MAY 12, 2011 TO THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP TO GET MY INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FIXED BECAUSE IT WAS RECALLED I SPOKE WITH A LADY AT THE DEALER EXPLAINING MY SITUATION ABOUT THE PART BEING RECALLED AND THAT IT IS DEFECTIVE. SHE ASKED ME TO GIVE HER MY VIN NUMBER. WHEN SHE TYPED IN MY VIN NUMBER, SHE TOLD ME THAT MY CLUSTER IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR A REPAIR. SHE SAID THE MY VIN NUMBER WAS A "STATUS 9 ISSUE" AND BECAUSE OF THIS, IT VOIDS ALL WARRANTIES NO MATTER WHAT. I SPOKE WITH EVERYONE THERE TYING TO SORT THINGS OUT AND SEE IF I CAN WORK OUT THIS ISSUE. MY 2002 S430 HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT THAT IS WHY IT IS A STATUS 9. BUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DID NOT FAIL BECAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT. EVEN AFTER THE ACCIDENT THE CLUSTER STILL WORKED FINE WITHOUT ANY SORT OF PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER FOR ALMOST A MONTH IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT MERCEDES SHOULD TAKE ACTION FOR THIS ISSUE NO MATTER WHAT. IF THE PART IS DEFECTIVE, ITS DEFECTIVE. THAT'S IT. THEY SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND REPLACE MY RECALLED CLUSTER FREE OF CHARGE. I WOULD LIKE FOR THE DEALER TO TAKE IN MY VEHICLE AND REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE CLUSTER. A RECALLED PART LIKE THIS SHOULD BE REPLACED EVEN THOUGH A VEHICLE LIKE MINE WAS IN AN ACCIDENT. AND MY CAR WASN'T IN A BAD ACCIDENT AND I HAVE PROOF AND PICTURES TO SHOW THAT IT WAS NOT HIT THAT BAD. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IF THIS MATTER WOULD BE ATTENDED TO AND I COULD GET MY PART REPLACED. THANKYOU VERY MUCH. *TR

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE AIRMATIC SUSPENSION SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND IMMEDIATELY, THE VEHICLE DROPPED TOWARDS THE GROUND. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING WITH EXTREME CAUTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED FOR THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 160,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S55. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH THE ACTIVE BODY CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO DECELERATE. THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE ALSO FAILED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO COLLAPSE. AFTER COASTING TO A STOP, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SUSPENSION PUMP WAS LEAKING. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. APPROXIMATELY SIX MONTHS LATER THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 101,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S430 (NA). THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE REAR SUSPENSION MALFUNCTION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO DROP TO THE GROUND. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 140,000.

THERE WAS NO WARNING IT JUST GAVE A ALERT THAT THE CAR WAS RIDING LOW AND TO STOP. AIRMATIC SUSPENSION FOR A 2002 S430. VERY COSTLY, I DID RESEARCH AND FOUND OUT THAT THIS PROBLEM IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE FOR MERCEDES S CLASS. I BELIEVE IT IS A DEFECT AT THE MANUFACTURER AND MB SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNT FOR SAID DEFECT. *TR
I OWNED 2002 MERCEDES MODEL S430. ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO I NOTICED MY CAR DROPPED LOWER TO THE TIRES AS I STARTED, THEN I TURN IT OFF AND BACK ON FOR THE CAR TO FUNCTION NORMALLY. NOW, FOR PAST 2 WEEKS THE PROBLEM HAS COME BACK AND ACTED VERY OFTEN. I ALSO TALKED TO FEW FRIENDS AND THEY SAID OTHER VEHICLES WITH SAME MODEL ARE EXPERIENCING SAME PROBLEM. IS THIS A RECALL FROM MERCEDES TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM YET. I LIKE TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT MORE INFO ON THIS PROBLEM AND HOW TO CORRECT IT. *TR
THE CAR WAS LEAKING OIL AND HYDRAULIC FLUID. THE CAR WOULD NOT RAISE UP AND WAS LEAKING OIL AS FAST AS IT WAS PUT IN. IT WAS NOT DRIVABLE. COULD NOT FIX IT I HAD TO PARK IT.
I OWN A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S430 AND FEB. 2010 THE "AIRMATIC SYSTEM" WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. THERE ARE ONLY 43,000 MILES ON MY CAR.THE DEALER WANTS CLOSE TO $1000 TO PUT A 'KIT" ON TO REPLACE THE FAILING SEALS ON THE AIRMATIC STRUTS, WHICH THE MFG HAS SINCE CHANGED THE DESIGN AND OFFERED RECALLS ON OTHER MODELS. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN THE CAR SINCE AS I WAS TOLD IF THE PUMP BURNS UP FROM THE AIR LEAKING OUT THE SUSPENSION WILL DROP THE CAR, CAUSING THE CAR TO BE UNDRIVABLE, AND IT COULD BE DANGEROUS IF THE CAR IS IN MOTION. I HAVE 2 CHILDREN AND CAN NOT TAKE THE CHANCE. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S430. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE ABC SUSPENSION FAILED AS A RESULT THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY LOWERED IN A DOWNWARD MOTION TOWARDS THE ROAD. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE FUSE LINK, AIRMATIC PUMP RELAY AND AIRMATIC COMPRESSOR WERE REPLACED. THERE WAS A RECALL RELATED TO THE FAILURE UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V263000 (SUSPENSION). THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,268.

IDLE PULLEY (PLASTIC) FAILED/BROKE ON I-68 AT TOP OF SIDELING HILL GAP CAUSING LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND OTHER POWER RELATED ITEMS. CAR HARD TO CONTROL GOING DOWN LONG, STEEP HILL. WHEN PULLEY BROKE, SERPENTINE BELT FELL OFF. WE WERE INFORMED THAT THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM. CAR ONLY HAS 53,000 MILES. *TR
MY CAR IS AN 2002 MERCEDES S430 AIRMATIC SYSTEM FAILURE STRUTS AND PUMP FIRST THE STRUTS FAILED IN NOV 2008 WHICH LOWERS THE CAR ON TOP OF THE TIRES AND MAKES THE CAR UNDRIVEABLE. NOW IN JUNE 2009, THE PUMP FAILED WHICH LOWERED THE CAR ON TOP OF THE TIRES AND MAKES AND CAR UNDRIVEABLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. IF THIS SYSTEM FAILS WHILE DRIVING, THE CAR AND DAMAGE THE TIRES AND CAUSE A BLOW-OUT RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. THESE FAILURES HAVE BEEN REPORTED BY MANY OWNERS AND HAVE CAUSED INJURIES AND EXTENSIVE COSTS TO OWNERS. EVERYONE CONSIDERS THESE FAILURES TO BE VERY PREMATURE IN THE LIFE OF THE CAR. AIR BAG CONTROL UNIT FAILURE. THIS IS AN ELECTRONIC MODULE THAT CONTROLS THE AIR BAG SYSTEM. WHEN THIS UNIT FAILS, THE AIR BAG SYSTEM NO LONGER WILL FUNCTION. I BELIEVE THAT THIS ITEM FAILED PREMATURELY AND SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER SOME WARRANTY OE RECALLED, AS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND ONE WOULD NOT EXPECT THIS ITEM TO FAIL AT SUCH LOW MILEAGE. I HAVE A 2002 430S MERCEDES BENZ WITH ONLY 69,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE REPLACED THE AIRMATIC PUMP AND PAID $641.89 ON SEPT 25, 2008 AT RICK HILL IMPORTS IN KINGSPORT TN AND MY CAR IS AGAIN LOWERING TO THE GROUND WHILE DRIVING SPEEDS OF 40 TO 50 MPH. I HAVE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD TO AIR MY CAR UP WHICH IS DANGEROUS. I TOOK IT BACK TO RICK HILL IMPORTS THEY TELL ME THE SHOCKS ARE LEAKING AIR AND THAT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS. I HAVE STARTED DOING RESEARCH ONLINE I HAVE FOUND THAT THEIR ARE SEVERAL ISSUES WITH THIS CAR YR MAKE AND MODEL. I AM TOLD THAT I WILL HAVE TO SPEND ANOTHER 3000-4000 TO GET MY CAR IN THE RUNNING CONDITION IT NEEDS TO BE IN. MY CAR HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN HARD OR THAT MUCH. THE YR OF MY CAR SHOULD HAVE ABOUT 100000 MILE ON IT, AND IT DOES NOT. I ALSO FOUND WHERE THERE IS AN INVESTIGATION ALREADY IN PLACE FOR THE AIRMATIC SYSTEM. I HAVE MADE MERCEDES AWARE OF MY PROBLEM THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I FEEL THAT I HAVE DEFAULTY SYSTEM AND I WANT THEM TO REPLACE IT AFTER ALL THEY ARE KNOWN FOR EXPENSE LUXURY DEPENDABLE CARS AND THAT IS WHY YOU PAY 70,000 DOLLARS FOR THEIR CARS. THIS LEMON AIRMATIC SYSTEM IS GOING TO CAUSE ME OR ONE OF MY FAMILY MEMBER TO GET KILLED LOWERING TO THE GROUND AT SPEED OF 40-50MPH AND PULLING OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO LET IT AIR UP. *TR

I ALSO CALLED THE FLETCHER JONES MOTORCAR DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE SAME THING. BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND MERCEDES BENZ REFUSE TO REPLACE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MODULES BASED ON THE SAFETY RECALL 06V028000. THE PROBLEM IS I AM UNABLE TO READ THE GAUGES AND INDICATORS, SUCH AS THE SPEEDOMETER, WHICH COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S430. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS BEGAN BLINKING AND THEN SUDDENLY DIMMED. THE CONTACT PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN JULY OF 2007 AND WAS UNAWARE OF ANY RECALLS. HE RESEARCHED HIS DEFECT AND CAME ACROSS A RECALL. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND THEY STATED THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE CONTACT FEELS THAT HIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL SINCE HE IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME FAILURE. THE RECALL NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 78,000.
OIL COOLER LEAK ON MY 2002 S600, AND I FOUND OUT THAT THIS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE CARS (2000-2002 V12 ENGINES) AND A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR THAT MERCEDES BENZ SHOULD COVER OR AT LEAST A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE REPAIR. I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT YOUR WEBSITE SO I DECIDED TO FILE A COMPLAINT. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE MERCEDES BENZ DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED IT AND SAID THE REAR MAIN SEAL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I PAID OVER $1100.00 FOR THIS REPAIR AND TOOK THE CAR BACK 3 TIMES WITHIN A WEEK AND A HALF BECAUSE THE OIL LEAK CONTINUED ONLY TO FIND OUT THE OIL COOLER IS WHAT IS LEAKING AND NOT THE REAR MAIN SEAL. *TR
THE MERCEDES S600 HAS A DESIGN FLAW THAT CAUSES A MAJOR OIL LEAK FROM THE OIL COOLER THAT IS EMBEDDED INSIDE THE ENGINE. THIS REQUIRES THE INTAKE AND HEADS TO BE REMOVED TO REPLACE THE OIL COOLER AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $5K. SPECIAL CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO CLEAN THE OIL FROM THE WIRING HARNESS, TRANSMISSION AND AREAS THAT HAS BEEN SOAKED BY THE OIL LEAK. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO RE-OCCUR EVERY 50-100K MILES. AS A KNOWN PROBLEM, MERCEDES HAS NOT ASSUMED ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TR

AIR BAG BLEW UP WITH OUT CRASH ABOUT MARCH 2008, MY CAR WAS PARKED IN MY HOUSE DRIVEWAY OVERNIGHT NEXT DAY I WAS GETTING READY TO GO TO WORK WHEN I STEPPED OUT SIDE MY HOUSE AND I FOUND MY AIR BAGS HAD BLOWN UP. I HAVE A 2002 MERCEDES S430. I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT A DEFECTIVE PART ON THIS VEHICLE. THE "ELECTRONIC SHIFTER MECHANISM" WENT BAD ON MY VEHICLE WITH 47,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. MY CAR TURNED ON, HOWEVER THE "SHIFTER" WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK. IT WAS DETERMINED MY THE MERCEDES SERVICE SHOP THAT THE "ELECTRONIC SHIFTER MECHANISM" WAS BAD. DURING THE COURSE OF WAITING FOR MY VEHICLE TO BE REPAIRED, I HAD RESEARCHED THE ISSUE ONLINE AND THROUGHOUT VARIOUS SOURCES, ESPECIALLY "ONLINE MERCEDES BENZ FORUMS," I FOUND THAT HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WHOM OWN THE SAME VEHICLE AS ME AS WELL AS OTHER MODELS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S500 SPORT. AFTER VEHICLE WAS SHUT OFF A VERY LOAD GROWL CAME FROM UNDER THE HOOD ON THE RIGHT SIDE. IT WAS APPARENTLY THE AIR COMPRESSOR AND IT WOULDN'T SHUT OFF. THE GRUMBLE OR GROWL SHOOK THE CAR AND SMELLED OF ELECTRICAL. THE HEIGHT OF THE CAR DID NOT CHANGE. THE GROWL STOPPED AFTER ABOUT 10 MINUTES. I HAVE PARKED THE CAR OUTDOORS AS TO NOT TEMPT FATE WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF A CAR FIRE IN THE GARAGE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A FAILURE IN THE AIR RIDE SYSTEM. WHILE I REALIZE EVERYTHING MECHANICAL HAS THE CHANCE TO FAIL I AM DEEPLY CONCERNED THAT THIS COMPONENT WAS RUNNING AND HAS A CHANCE TO START A FIRE WITH THE IGNITION IN THE OFF POSITION. IN APRIL 2007 I NOTICED THE CAR DROPPING AND THE HISSING SOUND OF AIR WHEN THE CAR WAS PARKED AND TURNED OFF. ON APRIL 12, 2007 THE CAR DROPPED EXTREMELY CLOSE TO THE TIRES AND I WAS FORCED TO IT FOR REPAIR SINCE MY CAR IS MY LIVELIHOOD. I WAS TOLD MY REAR SUSPENSION COMPRESSOR AND FRONT SUSPENSION ON ONE SIDE NEEDED REPLACING ALONG WITH THE R/F STRUT COSTING ME A TOTAL OF $2086.00. THIS COMPLAINT IS RELATED TO A 2002 MERCEDES-BENZ S500 WITH REAR WHEEL DRIVE AND THE "AIRMATIC" SUSPENSION SYSTEM. AFTER PARKING THE VEHICLE AND SHUTTING OFF THE IGNITION, LOUD BANGING NOISES CAME FROM THE AIRMATIC SUSPENSION COMPRESSOR AT THE FRONT RIGHT OF THE VEHICLE. NO WARNINGS OR FAULTS WERE DISPLAYED ON THE VEHICLE'S DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM AND THE VEHICLE'S RIDE HEIGHT WAS NORMAL. THE BANGING NOISE STOPPED. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE LATER THAT NIGHT, THE AIRMATIC SUSPENSION RELEASED ITS REMAINING COMPRESSED AIR AND DROPPED THE ENTIRE SUSPENSION TO A POINT SO LOW THAT THE FRONT TIRES COULD NOT BE TURNED WITHOUT DOING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL HOUSING AND FENDERS. ANY UNDULATION IN THE ROAD CAUSED RUBBING AND DAMAGE IN THE WHEEL HOUSING. FINALLY, AFTER THIS, A WARNING CAME ON THE DASH SAYING "STOP- CAR TOO LOW". VEHICLE COULD NOT BE TURNED OR DRIVEN AND WAS TOWED TO A MERCEDES-BENZ DEALER. DEALER STATES THAT DESPITE THE FACT THAT "ALL" AIRMATIC SUSPENSIONS FAIL THIS WAY UNDER 50000 MILES (THIS CAR HAD 32000 AT TIME OF FAILURE) IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS OR EXTENSIONS OF WARRANTY. THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT AND EPIDEMIC FAILURE ON ALL MERCEDES-BENZ "AIRMATIC" AIR SUSPENSION VEHICLES. THERE IS AN UPGRADED PART TO REPLACE THE ON THAT THE MANUFACTURER RECOGNIZES AS FAULTY FROM THE FACTORY. THE REPAIR AND TOWING BILL CAME TO ALMOST $2000 AND THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER COVERED NONE OF IT. MY INNER WHEEL HOUSINGS SUFFERED DAMAGE THAT WAS NOT REPAIRED. *JB
WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE SUDDENLY CAR BEGAN TO LOSE ALL POWER, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, CAR BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY REPORTED THAT THE OXYGEN SENSOR WAS FAULTY AND BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT COIL PACKS AND THAT THEY NEED TO REPLACE THE SPARK PLUGS AGAIN, AT A TOTAL COST OF $3875.00 THIS SEEMS VERY DISTURBING CONSIDERING THEY ALREADY REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES BECAUSE THEY WERE DEFECTIVE PARTS FROM THE FACTORY UNDER WARRANTY BUT NOW REFUSE TO TAKE RESPOSIBILITY FOR THE COIL PACKS EVEN THOUGH THEY ADMIT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THESE HIGH IGNITION SYSTEMS. ONLY 14275 MILES ON VEHICLE.
I OWN A 2002 MERCEDES BENZ S-430 WITH 69,000 MILES THAT I PURCHASED NEW. ON FEBRUARY 7TH & 8TH I HAD THE DEALER PERFORM A SCHEDULED SERVICING OF MY CAR WHICH WAS AN EXTENSIVE CHECKUP (COST OVER $1,000) DESPITE HAVING NO PROBLEMS. THE FOLLOWING DAY MY FAMILY TOOK AN AUTOMOBILE TRIP OF 140 MILES. ON FEBRUARY 10TH, WHILE DRIVING I EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF THE AIRMATIC SUSPENSION SYSTEM. THE CAR'S WARNING SYSTEM ALERTED ME TO STOP THE CAR AND NOT DRIVE IT. AFTER TALKING TO MERCEDES ON THEIR EMERGENCY RESPONSE SYSTEM, I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY DEALER 140 MILES AWAY. THIS MORNING,2/12/2002, I WENT TO THE DEALER AND SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER. HE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS PROBABLY A FAILURE OF A HYDRAULIC STRUT/SHOCK WHICH SUSPENDS THE CAR. HAD I TRIED TO TURN THE WHEEL BEFORE NOTICING THE PROBLEM I WOULD HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO NEGOTIATE A CURVE AND WOULD HAVE HAD AN ACCIDENT. WHILE AT THE DEALER, I WAS SHOWN 5 OR 6 MERCEDES BENZES, SOME MUCH NEWER THAN MINE, WHOSE CARS HAD COLLAPSED OVER THE FRONT WHEELS. THIS SEEMS TO ME TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT WHICH COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO OTHERS. THE DEFECT IS NOT LIMITED TO THE S CLASS THAT I HAVE SINCE I WAS SHOWN AN E CLASS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT A REPLACEMENT PART WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL PART BUT RATHER AN IMPROVED PART THAT MERCEDES ENGINEERS CAME UP WITH AFTER MANY REPORTED PROBLEMS. SINCE THE PART HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED, THE REPAIR WILL PROBABLY COST ME WELL OVER $1,000 DESPITE MERCEDES BEING AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. MORE IMPORTANTLY, DRIVERS, PASSENGERS AND OTHER VEHICLES ARE IN SERIOUS DANGER IF THE MERCEDES BECOMES UNMANAGABLE. MY CAR HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED NOR DO I KNOWN EXACTLY WHAT FAILED, BUT GIVEN THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM I DID NOT WANT TO WAIT BEFORE REPORTING THE PROBLEM. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT SINCE I OBSERVED MANY OTHER VEHICLES AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH SIMILAR PROBLEMS.*JB

THE CONTACT WAS PARKED FOR APPROXIMATELY 2-3 HOURS, WHEN HE RETURNED AND NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EVEN LOWER THAN BEFORE. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS AN AIRMATIC SYSTEM FAILURE. THE AIRMATIC SYSTEM WAS REPLACED.
