2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. CONSUMER STATED FAULTY THERMOSTAT *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN THE MECHANIC ATTEMPTED TO REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT, PROBLEMS WERE ENCOUNTERED. THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING BOLTS WOULD NOT READILY UNSCREW. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT IF MORE FORCE WAS EXERTED, THE PLASTIC-LIKE INTAKE MANIFOLD THROUGH WHICH THE BOLTS FASTENED, WOULD CRACK/BREAK AND REQUIRE A VERY EXPENSIVE INTAKE MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT. THE CONSUMER DECIDED TO WAIT ON THE REPAIR AND CONTACTED THREE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIPS FOR SECOND OPINIONS. ALL THREE INFORMED THE CONSUMER THEY WOULD BE CAREFUL, BUT THEY COULD NOT GUARANTEE HIM THAT THEY WOULD NOT CRACK THE INTAKE MANIFOLD IN ATTEMPTING TO REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT. *JB UPDATED 08/10/10.*JB
INTAKE MANIFOLD CRACKED, AND BUSTED, RESULTED IN TOWING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT WOULD NOT LATCH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE LATCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 215,000.
THE DRIVER SEAT BELT BUCKLE ON MY 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS UNBUCKLES ON ITS OWN. I BUCKLE UP, PULL ON IT, AND START OUT ON THE ROAD. NEXT THING I KNOW IS THE BUCKLE COMES APART AND THEN ITS JUST A REPEAT OF THE SAME THING FOR THE REST OF THE TRIP. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO CORTESE IN ROCHESTER, NY AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO RECALL ON IT. THEY BUCKLED THE BELT BUT COULDN'T GET IT TO FAIL IN THE SHOP. IF I HAVE AN ACCIDENT I WILL SUE BASED ON ALL THE ISSUES I AM SEEING ON THIS SITE, AND FORD'S UNWILLING TO FIX IT. I BOUGHT THE CAR A YEAR AND A HALF AGO AND IT HAS BEEN AN OFF AND ON PROBLEM. I HAVE 97,000 MILES ON IT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE COMPOSITE INTAKE MANIFOLD WHICH IS WHERE THE THERMOSTAT MOUNTS INTO THE HEAD OF THE MOTOR HAS FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALERS FEE WOULD EXCEED THE LOCAL MECHANIC'S FEE. THE CONTAC HAS BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL AT NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHENEVER THE CONTACT WOULD ATTEMPT TO SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THAT IT WOULD SUDDENLY SHUT OFF. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STARTED THE IGNITION AND NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT SEAT BELT FAILED TO LATCH. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN DISCOVERED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 01V227001 (SEAT BELTS; FRONT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY); HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS EXCLUDED FROM THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 55,000.
TEMP GAUGE IS NOT CONNECTED. I RECENTLY HAD TO HAVE THE REPLACE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND THE SHOP INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING TO CONNECT IT TO. *TR
2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. FREQUENTLY A PLUME OF SMOKE COMES OUT THE LEFT SIDE OF THE STEERING POST. THERE IS ALSO A BURNING ODOR. IT ONLY LASTS FOR A SECOND. THERE IS NO EQUIPMENT FAILURE SO FAR. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO TWO DIFFERENT FORD DEALERS AND THEY TELL ME THIS IS NOT UNCOMMON, DON"T WORRY ABOUT IT. I HAVE WRITTEN TO FORD CORP. AND THEY TELL ME NOTHING BUT TAKE IT TO A FORD SERVICE DEPT. I AM IN FEAR OF A MAJOR FIRE WHILE I AM DRIVING. WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE? THANK YOU. *TR
NOTICED FRONT END VIBRATION IN MERCURY GRAND PRIX. ASKED MECHANIC TO VERIFY IF WHEEL BEARING BAD. NO PROBLEM THERE SO TOOK TO SEARS TIRE STORE IN HEMET TO VERIFY IF TIRE PROBLEM. ADVISED THAT 3 OF 4 TIRES HAVE TREAD SEPARATION AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE EVEN THOUGH UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE ROAD HAZARD COVERAGE. MY DISPUTE WITH SERVICE WRITER INCLUDED ASSISTANT MANAGER WHO SUPPORTED HIS POSITION. MY POSITION WAS THAT THIS WAS A MATERIAL FAILURE AND SHOULD BE COVERED TO NO AVAIL SO LEFT STORE WITH 3 BAD TIRES. WENT TO TEMECULA BRANCH OF SEARS WHERE SERVICE WRITER IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZED THE PROBLEM AND SET ABOUT CHANGING TIRES UNDER WARRANTY TO MY SATISFACTION. THESE TIRES ARE BRIDGESTONE BRAND WITH 65,000 MILE WARRANTY AND ABOUT 40,000 MILES USE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THE HEADLIGHTS WERE DIM WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT WHICH MADE IT DIFFICULT TO SEE. THE LIGHTS WOULD ALSO REFLECT OFF OF THE PAVEMENT. WHEN APPROACHING ONCOMING TRAFFIC THE PASSING VEHICLES LIGHTS CAUSED A BLINDING EFFECT. THE DEALER STATED THAT WAS HOW THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED AND WOULD NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 45-50 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED A LOW PITCH HUMMING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR WHEEL. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS PREMATURE AXLE WEAR. THEY ALSO STATED THAT THEY WOULD REPAIR ALL REAR AXLES AND BEARINGS AT THE COST OF $1,350. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 44,000.
A VEHICLE COLLIDED WITH THE REAR OF A STOPPED VEHICLE. THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED BUT THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT. *TR
SMALL PIECE OF PLASTIC FROM INTAKE WENT INTO THE CYLINDER #4 AND RAPPED AROUND ONE OF THE VALUES CAUSING THIS VALUE TO STAY OPEN SO CYLINDER #4 HAS NO COMPRESSION. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE BRAKES MADE A SQUEALING SOUND AND LOCKED WHEN THE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE FAILURE CAUSED THE CONTACT TO REAR END THE PRECEDING VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 50,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MERCURY MARQUIS. WHILE SHIFTING INTO PARK, THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO SOUND THE HORN, BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. A CRASH OCCURRED, BUT THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE HORN IN THE VEHICLE WAS DESIGNED TO BE DIFFICULT TO FIND. THE CONTACT WANTS TO KNOW IF THE HORN IS LOCATED UNDER THE HORN SYMBOL OR UNDER THE AIR BAG. HE HAS TO REMOVE HIS HANDS FROM THE STEERING WHEEL IN ORDER TO BLOW THE HORN, WHICH TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT. HE FEELS THAT IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD THAT THE HORN DOES NOT WORK. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 29,414.
I TRADED A 1999 GRAND MARQUIS IN ON A 2001 GRAND MARQUIS ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO. A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE 99 WAS THAT THE DASH LIGHTS KEPT BLOWING FUSES. NOW THE 2001 IS DOING THE SAME THING, THERE IS ONLY 53,000 MILES ON IT. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE LOWER HYDRAULIC UNIT FOR THE ABS FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER IS THE ONLY ONE THAT SELLS THE PART. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AND IS LOCATED AT THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE SPEED WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 110,000.
TL - THE VEHICLE WAS A 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING THE GAS PEDAL BECAME STUCK. THE VEHICLE THEN SIDE SWIPED TWO OTHER VEHICLES. THE VEHICLE WENT OFF THE ROAD AND HIT A TREE. THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT WAS DAMAGED. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000. THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED. I AM REPORTING THE FAILURE OF THE BUCKLE ON THE FRONT SEAT BELT ON DRIVER'S SIDE OF VEHICLE. IT APPEARED TO CLICK"CLOSED BUT UNEXPECTEDLY POPPED OPEN WHEN I DRIVING. I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER . WHO SAID THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM DUE TO THE VIN.. HOWEVER, NHTSA SITE SHOWED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL OF THE VEHICLE FOR JUST THIS PROBLEM. I UNDERSTAND THAT RECALLS WERE TYPICALLY ASSEMBLY PLANT RELATED AND THAT THIS VEHICLE MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. HOWEVER, THE SIMILARITY WAS TOO GREAT TO IGNORE ,AND I WISHED TO REPORT THIS MATTER TO YOU. PLEASE NOTE THAT NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED BUT THE HAZARD TO MY SAFETY WAS CONSIDERABLE. I WILL REPLACE THE FAULTY PART AT MY OWN EXPENSE IN THE MEANTIME BUT URGE YOUR AGENCY TO FURTHER REVIEW THE POSSIBILITY THAT NOT ALL THE VEHICLES SO IMPAIRED HAVE BEEN RECALLED. MY SISTER AND I'M WRITING THIS REPORT ON HER BEHALF. HER CAR IS A 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. LAST MONTH, (FEB '07) WHILE DRIVING, THE CAR'S ENGINE SHUT DOWN SEVERAL TIMES. EACH TIME SHE HEARD A "BEEP" AND WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON- CHECK ENGINE, TRACTION CONTROL AND ANOTHER SHE CAN'T RECALL. AFTER A MINUTE OR SO, THE ENGINE WOULD START NORMALLY. SHE TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALER, SAWGRASS FORD IN SUNRISE, FL. THE PROBLEM RECURRED AND SHE AGAIN TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER. THE LAST TIME THEY FOUND A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND REPAIRED IT. (THE TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN GIVING PROBLEM, BUT SHE TOOK THE CAR TO REPAIR THE SHUT-DOWN PROBLEM). YESTERDAY (MAR 1, 2007) THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN 4 TIMES ! EACH TIME SHE HEARD THE "BEEP" AND WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED INCLUDING TRACTION CONTROL AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS. SHE WAS ON HER WAY HOME AND IT NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AS ANOTHER CAR ALMOST RAN INTO HER. THE CAR IS TO GO BACK TO SAWGRASS FORD (FOR THE THIRD TIME) ON MONDAY, MAR 5 '07. THE CAR WILL BE TOWED, NOT DRIVEN, AS THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION, ESPECIALLY AS POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES ARE LOST ON SHUT-DOWN. INTERESTINGLY, I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2000 GRAND MARQUIS IM MAY AND JUNE 2005 . I REPORTED THIS TO YOU (NHTSA) AND YOU WROTE ME BACK, ASSIGNING REF.# 10141074. MY PROBLEM WAS FOUND TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A SINGLE DEFECTIVE SPARK PLUG ! THE PLUG WAS REPLACED AND THE CAR HAS FUNCTIONED NORMALLY SINCE. THE REAL PROBLEM WAS WITH THE PROGRAMMING OF THE POWER CONTROL MODULE WHICH WAS CONFUSED AND OVERWHELMED BY ONE BAD SPARK PLUG. IN 2005 I WROTE NUMEROUS LETTERS TO FORD AND THEY WERE COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. ENGINE SHUT-DOWNS ON MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS ARE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED. SINCERELY,
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE FUMES IN THE VEHICLE. A NHTSA RECALL LETTER, #06E056000, REGARDING FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE WAS RECEIVED BY THE CONTACT. THE DEALER WAS ALERTED AND REFUSED TO PERFORM THE RECALL REMEDY. THE DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDED THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE MADE A CONSISTENT, LOUD SQUEAKING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, WHERE THE HOOD WAS LUBRICATED AND ADJUSTED. THE REPAIR WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL IN FIXING THE PROBLEM. ALSO, WHEN THE BRAKES WERE DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD. THE SERVICE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE BRAKE PROBLEM. DRIVER SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM / BALL JOINT FAILED ALLOWING THE FRONT WHEEL TO SEPARATE FROM THE CAR. PRIOR TO THIS DRIVER EXPERIENCED SQUEAKING FROM THE FRONT END AND STIFFNESS IN STEERING/CASTOR ACTION AT SLOW SPEEDS NOT WORKING. *JB
2001 GRAND MARQUIS [XXX].UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED. FAILURE OF "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT " TO INDICATE IGNITION FAILURE. NUMBER 3 AND 5 COILS FAILED AS WELL THE IDLE CONTROL. CAR LURCHED FORWARD AT STOP LIGHT ,ENGINE CUT IN AND OUT DURING HIGH SPEED EXPRESS DRIVING RESULTED IN LOSS OF POWER BRAKE AS WELL POWER STEERING. CAR WAS FIXED AT THE DEALERSHIP AT MY EXPENSE. EMISSION WARRANTY BOOK SHOWS THE 80K EMISSION WARRANTY SHOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF IT AT NO COST.?CAR HAS 72K MILES. ALSO THE "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT " COMPONENT ARE NOT OPERATING! THE APRIL 2006 CONSUMER REPORT GIVES THE 2001 CROWN VICTORIA AND GRAND MARQUIS A BLACK MARK IN THE IGNITION SECTION. FORD SHOULD REPLACE BALANCE OF 6 IGNITION COILS AND PAY ME FOR THE REPAIR. FRONT SEAT BELT RESTRAINT BUCKLE ASSEMBLY FAILED TO PROPERLY LATCH MAKING THE SEAT BELT AND WARNING ASSEMBLY INOPERATIVE. FORD REFUSED TO HONOR RECALL. *JB
DT: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE RIGHT PASSENGER DOOR ON 2001 MERCURY MARQUIS WILL NOT STAY OPEN LONG ENOUGH TO GET IN AND OUT OF THE CAR, IT FLOPPED BACK AND FORWARD. SHE HAD IT AT DEALER FOR SERVICE IN 5-04, AND THEY ADJUSTED IT. ON 9-18-05 THE DOOR CAME BACK, AND HIT THE CONTACT IN THE SHOULDER. HER SHOULDER WAS BLACK AND BLUE, AND SHE COULD HARDLY MOVE HER ARM UP AND DOWN FOR THREE DAYS. ON 9-25-05 THE DEALER TOLD HER THAT IT WAS THE DESIGN OF THE CAR, AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT. ALSO, SHE TALKED TO THE MANUFACTURER , AND THEY TOLD HER THE SAME THING.*AK *NM
WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE THE ENGINE LOST POWER WHICH RESULTED IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND GEAR SHIFT LOCKING UP. THE DEALER STATED THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *AK CONSUMER GOT OUT OF CAR AND ROCKED IT BACK AND FORTH FOR A FEW MINUTE. HET GOT BACK INTO THE CAR AND TRIED TO MOVE BOTH THE WHEEL AND THE GEAR SHIFT. AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES OF THIS THEY BOTH UNLOCKED AND THE CAR WAS OK FOR 5-6 MONTHS. *BF
THE HEAD GASKET ON THE CONSUMER'S 2001 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS LEAKED OIL. *NM *SC THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY METAL CHIPS LEFT BETWEEN THE HEAD GASKETS AND BLOCK. *JB

ENGINE HEAD GASKET LEAKS OIL/FLUID DOWN ONTO THE CATALYLIC CONVERTER, WHICH COULD LEAD TO A FIRE. THERE IS A TSB ON THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE. *AK
THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED. ONLY THE PASSENGER AIR BAG DEPLOYED UPON IMPACT. THE COMPLAINT WAS GIVEN BY THE REPAIR SHOP BY A PERSON NAMED PETE. *JB *SC *JB
THIS MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS LS HAS HAD 4 FAILURES OF COIL PACKS. THESE CAN CAUSE SERVIOUS DAMAGE TO AUTO BY PUTING THE AUTO OUT OF BALANCE OR STRANDING YOU ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS AUTO HAS HAD SEVERAL FAILURES THAT RESULTED IN COSTLY REPAIRS, AND NO RECALL EXISTED WHEN IN FACT THIS IS A VERY VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON ALL MARQUES. RESEARCH SAYS THAT ALL FORDS MADE IN CANADA HAVE SERIOUS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS DUE TO INFERIOR PARTS WHICH I PRESUME ARE IMPORTED. I DO HAVE OLD PARTS FOR YOUR INSPECTION FROM ONE OF THE REPLACED COILS. ONE DEALER IN DALLAS REFUSED TO PROVIDE OLD PARTS. I DO HAVE RECEIPTS FOR ALL REPAIRS. *AK
WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF EXPIRING WARRANTY, 3 COILS FAILED ONE AFTER THE OTHER RESULTING IN VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR COST. WITHIN YEAR 4TH COIL FAILS. TRIED TO GET WARRANTY TO COVER AFTER 1ST FAILURE; FELT LIKE MANUFACTURER DEFECT. STILL THINK SOME SORT OF DEFECT. AM JUST PRAYING THAT I WON'T BE ON THE ROAD ON A LONG DISTANCE TRIP WHEN #5 FAILS. *TR

WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. IT VIBRATED UNCONTROLLABLY. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND DROVE IT TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE COIL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK THE DEALER REPLACED THE #6 COIL BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. *TC *JB
