TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE CONTACT SMELLED A BURNING ODOR AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE. HE PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER AND OPENED THE HOOD. THE HORN BEGAN TO SOUND, SO HE DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE BOX WAS REPAIRED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE UNAWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 79,000.
UNINTENDED ACCELERATION: LAST YEAR (FEB 2009) MY 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS HAD AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHICH I (WEIGHT LIFTER) COULD BARELY CONTROL AND I ALMOST CRASHED INTO 2-CARS. I ALSO HAD TO HAVE THE BRAKES REPLACED DUE TO SEVERE BRAKING REQUIRED TO STOP THE CAR DUE TO THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION I USED A RELIABLE MECHANIC (HIGHLY RATED BY THE STATE OF MA) AS THE LOCAL FORD DEALER SHOPS ARE OVER-PRICED AND UNRELIABLE. NO DIAGNOSTIC CODES SHOWED-UP AT THE SHOP AFTER THE PROBLEM, BUT I WOULD NOT HAVE MY WIFE DRIVE THIS CAR? THE CAR IS WELL MAINTAINED AND I HAD A PREVIOUS GRAND MARQUIS, SO I KNOW THE CAR BETTER THAN MOST. HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND IS THERE A RECALL? FORD WAS CONTACTED ON FEB 23 2010, VIA THEIR PROTAL, AND INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM OR RECALL, AND SUGGESTED THAT I GO TO THEIR DEALER (DID NOT GO AS I HAVE NO NEED FOR BS). I INFORMED MY LOCAL MECHANIC THAT THE CAR WENT INTO OVERDRIVE AND I HAD TO DRIVE OVER THE CURB (BRAKE TO FLOOR TO STOP IT).L BURNED OUT THE BRAKES BUT NO ONE DIED. THERE WAS NO DIAGNOSTIC CODES THAT SHOWED A BRAKING OR OTHER ELECTRONIC PROBLEM. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHEN BACKING UP AT 10 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WAS VERY STIFF AND DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO HIS DESTINATION, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. WHEN HE REACHED HIS DESTINATION, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LOW. HE REFILLED THE POWER STEERING FLUID AND THE FAILURE IMPROVED. ONE MONTH LATER, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE STEERING BECAME STIFF AND DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER AGAIN. HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT WHEN HE WAS INFORMED OF A FEE TO FLUSH OUT THE POWER STEERING FLUID DUE TO POSSIBLE DIRT BUILD-UP, THE CONTACT REFUSED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. HE FEELS THAT HE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY AND THE DEALER OR MANUFACTURER SHOULD COVER THE EXPENSES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 19,970 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 20,200. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 45 WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY REPLACED THE SWITCHES FOR THE HEADLIGHTS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED AND THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD GO OUT COMPLETELY WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED. SOMETIMES THE LIGHTS WILL ILLUMINATE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OR UP TO FIFTEEN MINUTES. WHEN HE PULLS THE TURN SIGNAL LEVER TOWARDS HIM, THE BRIGHT LIGHTS ILLUMINATE, BUT SHUT OFF WHEN HE LETS GO OFF THE LEVER. THE DEALER INFORMED HIM TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR INSPECTION. INTAKE MANIFOLD CRACKED, NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THIS IS A PLASTIC COMPONENT WHICH IS NOT DESIGNED FOR COLD WEATHER CLIMATES. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME (SECOND CAR) THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO. *TR
WE HAVE 9 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS IN OUR FLEET. WE ARE A 24 HOUR TRANSPORTATION SERVICE AND OUR CARS ARE OUT A NIGHT. THE LIGHTS JUST TURN OFF WITHOUT WARNING AND OUR DRIVERS NOW HAVE TO DRIVE IN THE DARK UNTIL THE LIGHTS COME BACK ON AFTER SHUTTING THE CAR DOWN. OR, THEY MAY NOT COME BACK ON AND HAVE TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED IN. WE HAVE PURCHASED THIS COMPANY IN MAY 2008 AND PURCHASED ALL NINE CARS AT THE SAME TIME. WE HAVE REPLACED FOUR OF THE NINE SO FAR AT THE COST OF $591. EACH, OUR COST ACCORDING TO WHITEYS' AUTOMALL MANSFIELD OHIO. IF THIS ITEM IS SO DEFECTIVE THAT WE HAVE TO KEEP REPLACING THIS SAME ITEM IN EACH CAR, WHY WAS THIS ITEM NOT RECALLED AND CORRECTED. THE "ACTUATOR" THAT ALLOW HOT AIR TO FLOW INTO THE CAR FOR HEAT MALFUNCTIONS AND WILL NOT MOVE. YOU CAN NOT DEFROST THE WINDSHIELD RESULTING IN ZERO VISIBILITY WHILE DRIVING IN THE COLD. *TR

THE OCCUPANTS (MALE DRIVER, FEMALE PASSENGER) WERE DRIVING DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS BACK HOME FROM AN APPOINTMENT. AS THE VEHICLE APPROACHED A CURVE THE DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO ANY EXTENT TO HOLD HIS LANE IN THE CURVE. THE VEHICLE CRASHED THROUGH A GUARD RAIL AND CAME TO REST IN A FIELD. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED BUMPS & BRUISES. THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED A BROKEN STERNUM AND BACK PAIN. THE CAR WAS A COMPLETE LOSS (TOTALED) AS DETERMINED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. WHEN THE RECENT GM RECALL OCCURRED I CHECKED THE INTERNET REGARDING FORD/MERCURY PRODUCTS. MERCURY HAD A RECALL FOR 2005-2011 VEHICLES FOR FAULTY STEERING COLUMNS THAT COULD LEAD TO ACCIDENTS. HOWEVER, THERE WERE MULTIPLE REPORTS FROM 2004 OWNERS WITH THE SAME ISSUES. THEREFORE, I DIDN'T TO SUBMIT THIS INCIDENT TO THE NTSB. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH AT NIGHT, THE HEADLIGHTS AND THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WOULD SUDDENLY MALFUNCTION AND STOP ILLUMINATING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, WHERE A DIAGNOSTIC TEST INDICATED THAT THE HEAD LIGHT CONTROL MODULE WAS FAULTY. THE CONTACT DID NOT HAVE THE HEADLIGHT CONTROL MODULE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
WINDSHIELD WIPERS ON MY 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS BEGAN OPERATING ERRATICALLY TWO MONTHS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. INITIALLY THEY TURNED ON BY THEMSELVES AND COULD NOT BE TURNED OFF; A WEEK LATER I COULD NOT TURN THEM ON AT ALL EXCEPT IN THE VERY HIGH SETTING. FINALLY, 1-2 WEEKS LATER THEY WOULDN'T TURN ON AT ALL. ALL OF THIS ERRATIC OPERATION HAPPENED WITHIN A 3 TO 4 WEEK PERIOD SEEMINGLY AT COMPARATIVELY LOW TEMPERATURES (15 TO 30 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT). THE DEALER RECOMMENDED REPLACING A SWITCH ON THE STEERING COLUMN FOR $350, BUT THIS DID NOT PERMANENTLY SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THEN THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR FOR ANOTHER $350. SO FAR THIS APPROACH SEEMS TO HAVE ALLEVIATED THE PROBLEM, BUT SUCH AN OUTLAY 2 MONTHS OUT OF WARRANTY IS INEXCUSABLE, WITHOUT A RECALL AND FREE REPAIR, GIVEN FORDS APPARENTLY GENERIC PROBLEM WITH ERRATICALLY OPERATING WIPERS ON THEIR OTHER PRODUCTS. FORTUNATELY, I WAS NOT IN ANY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS (SNOW OR RAIN STORMS, ETC.) WHERE MY IMMEDIATELY SAFETY DEPENDED ON THE RELIABLE OPERATION OF THE WIPERS, BUT THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITION AND AN INEXCUSABLE CASH OUTLAY FOR CONSUMERS. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH AT NIGHT, THE HEADLIGHTS DIMMED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE APPROXIMATELY FIVE TIMES BEFORE IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE LIGHT MODULE WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 64,814 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 64,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE RACK AND PINION WAS REPLACED IN AUGUST OF 2007. IT FAILED AGAIN ON OCTOBER 8, 2007. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT WARRANTY THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 42,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 56,753. UPDATED 10/30/08. *LJ

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME EXTREMELY HARD TO TURN. THE CONTACT CHECKED THE POWER STEERING FLUID, AND THE FLUID WAS AT THE PROPER LEVEL. A MECHANIC POWER FLUSHED THE POWER STEERING FLUID; HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM CONTINUED TO OCCUR. AS OF JULY 24, 20007, THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 18,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 18,900. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING 8 MPH THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP WHEN THE BRAKE WAS DEPRESSED. HE STATED THAT IT WAS APPROXIMATELY 30 SECONDS BEFORE THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE CLEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS NEVER INSPECTED. APPROXIMATELY FOUR DAYS LATER THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. HE STATED THAT HIS VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A WOODEN POLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE AS A RESULT OF THE CRASH. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 36,000. *AK
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, DEBRIS FROM THE PRECEDING VEHICLE STRUCK THE ROOF OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. THE FAILURE CAUSED THE PAINT TO CHIP. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC AND THEY STATED THAT THE PAINT WAS DELAMINATING. THE INSURANCE COMPANY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE POWERTRAIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SINCE 2008, THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD TURN OFF INTERMITTENTLY. THE LIGHTS WOULD TURN ON ONCE THE DOORS WERE OPENED BUT WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THEY WOULD TURN OFF. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE COMPUTER WHICH WAS REPLACED. HOWEVER, THE FAILURE OCCURRED AGAIN. 2004 MERCURY MARQUIS REAR SHOCKS WENT BAD. CONSUMER WOULD LIKE REIMBURSEMENT FOR REPAIR WORK DONE. *KB THE CONSUMER NOTICED A SLIGHT BOUNCE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE SHOCKS WERE LEAKING OIL. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE LIGHTS WOULD CONTINUOUSLY FLICKER ON AND OFF. IN 2006 AND 2009, THE DEALER REPLACED THE LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE SHIFTING FROM DRIVE TO PARK THE GEAR LOCKED IN REVERSE AND WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS AT NIGHT THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT GO FROM LOW BEAM TO HIGH BEAM. ADDITIONALLY, THE TIRES SLOWLY DEFLATE. THE DEALERSHIP WAS ALERTED. THEY REPAIRED THE GEAR COLUMN, HEADLIGHT SWITCH AND SUGGESTED TO CHECK THE TIRES WEEKLY AND ADD AIR.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE HEADLIGHTS FLICKER ON AND OFF WHILE IN USE. AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP DETERMINED THE LIGHT CONTROL BOX NEEDS TO BE REPLACED.
DT*: THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP THE FIRST TIME; A DIAGNOSTIC TEST WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. DT: WHILE THE CONTACT'S FRIEND WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT SHE PRESSED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT HESITATED WHILE STOPPING THE VEHICLE. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, WHILE STOPPING AT A STOP LIGHT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL GOT STUCK. THIS CAUSED THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE TO REAR END THE VEHICLE IN FRONT. WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PRESSED THE VEHICLE WAS NON RESPONSIVE. THE CONTACT HAD TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF TO GET IT TO STOP. NO INJURIES REPORTED. STOPPED AT RED LIGHT. ENGINE STOPPED. COULD NOT RESTART. WAS TOWED TO LINCOLN/MERCURY DEALER. DIAGNOSIS INDICATED FAILURE OF POWERTRAIN COMMAND MODULE. ACCORDING TO SERVICE MANAGER THIS FAILURE COULD TAKE PLACE AT ANY TIME OR PLACE AND AT ANY SPEED. SUBSEQUENT TO THIS THE HEATER MOTOR BLOWER CONTROL UNIT FAILED.*JB

DT: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. HE NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE FLOORBOARD AND THE DASHBOARD. WHEN HE PULLED OFF THE ROAD THERE WERE FLAMES COMING UP THROUGH THE FLOORBOARD. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FIRE, BUT HE BELIEVED IT WAS THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM. THE MANUFACTURER REFERRED HIM TO CONTACT THE DEALER. HE HAS NOT CONTACTED THE SERVICE DEALER TO INFORM THEM OF THE FIRE. *AK

MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2004 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS (PRE-CERTIFIED, BOUGHT OFF THE SHOWROOM FLOOR AUGUST 2004); OUR THREE TEENAGE FOSTER CARE CHILDREN AND I WERE PASSENGERS. OUR MARQUIS ENTERED THE PARKING LOT OF CONVENIENCE STORE SO THAT WE COULD INSTALL AIR IN LEFT FRONT TIRE. WE DID A U-TURN IN PARKING LOT TO PROCEED TO AIR COMPRESSOR. WITH HER RIGHT FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL, MY WIFE STEERED THE CAR THROUGH THE U-TURN, HEADING TOWARD AIR COMPRESSOR. SUDDENLY, WITHOUT ANY WARNING, THE CAR ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY. THE CAR COULD NOT BE STEERED WHILE CAR SPED FORWARD. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. WE WERE WEARING OUR SEAT BELTS AND SHOULDER HARNESSES. THANKFULLY, THE AUTO HIT THE BUILDING INSTEAD OF THE GASOLINE PUMPS IN PARKING LOT. AFTER CRASHING INTO BUILDING, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE OR "REV" AT HIGH RATE. A LADY WHO WAS PUMPING GAS INTO HER CAR RUSHED OVER TO ASSIST US. SHE INSISTED THAT MY WIFE KEEP HER FOOT ON BRAKE PEDAL AND ASSISTED IN GETTING THE DRIVER'S DOOR OPEN AND INSTRUCTING FOR MY WIFE TO AVERT HER FACE AND INCH OVER IN SEAT TOWARD DOOR AFTER RELEASING THE SHOULDER HARNESS/SEAT BELT. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR IN PARK AND TURN IGNITION OFF. MY WIFE WAS TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE TO ER FOR TREATMENT OF INJURIES. HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER MADE ACCIDENT REPORT. THIS HAPPENED 5 TIMES AND THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY THE DEALER HOWEVER; THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN OVER 6,000 MILES WHEN THE PROBLEM RETURNED. THE GEAR WOULD STICK AND REQUIRED 2 TO 3 MINUTES OF JIGGLING BACK AND FORTH WITH PRESSURE TO GET INTO PARK, OTHER TIMES WHEN IN PARK AND HAD THE ENGINE RUNNING, THE KEY WOULD SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE, BUT COULD NOT REMOVED WITHOUT PUTTING MORE PRESSURE ON THE LEVER INTO PARK. ON ANOTHER OCCASION THE VEHICLE DROVE BACKWARDS ABOUT 4 FT. BEFORE THE CONSUMER COULD PUT HIS FOOT INTO THE VEHICLE AND ONTO THE BRAKE. THIS WAS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. *SC

NEW 2004 MERCURY MARQUIS. HAD CAR FOR ONE DAY. ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A QUICK LEFT TURN BY DEPRESSING ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR. MOTOR STARTED REVVING UP BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. LET OFF GAS AND TRANSMISSION ENGAGED. AFTER MAKING THE TURN,STOPPED THE CAR, STILL IN DRIVE, PUT THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR. THE ENGINE WENT INTO HIGH REVS AND THE CAR MOVED VERY SLOW,RELEASED THE GAS AND THE TRANSMISSION ONCE AGAIN ENGAGE. TOOK CAR BACK TO DEALER AND THEY ARE REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION. *JB
