TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 MERCURY MARINER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS TO ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND COULD BE RESTARTED HOWEVER THE FAILURE RECURRED TWELVE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND STATED THAT THE STEERING COLUMN COVER FOR THE IGNITION WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
DT: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING ON AN INCLINE THE 4-WHEEL DRIVE ENGAGED AND DISENGAGED WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO JOLT. THE DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT TAKE IT TO AN INCLINE WHEN TEST DRIVING. AN ENGINEER WITH THE MANUFACTURER TOLD THE CONTACT THAT BECAUSE IT WAS ALL WHEEL DRIVE THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE ACTIVATED WHEN THE VEHICLE DETECTED A WHEEL SLIP. THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPAIRS MADE TO THE VEHICLE. *AK UPDATED 1/25/2006 - WHENEVER THE CONSUMER DROVE OVER UNEVEN PAVEMENT SHE HEARD A CLUNKING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO INDICATED THAT EVERYTHING WAS VISUALLY OK AND THE THE MANUFACTURER SAID THE NOISE WAS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER THE VEHICLE'S STEERING RACK WAS REPLACED THE CONSUMER HEARD A LOUD HUMMING/WHINING NOISE COMING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY STEERING RACK. *NM
