TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MITSUBISHI GALANT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE THE TRANSMISSION HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT OPERATE IN THE DRIVE AND REVERSE POSITION. IN ADDITION, THERE WAS A LEAKAGE AND SMOKE WAS ALSO PRESENT COMING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE FAILURE WOULD ONLY OCCUR WHEN ENGINE TEMPERATURE WAS HEATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE AND WAS REPLACED IN 2013. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 220,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 MITSUBISHI GALANT. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IDLING, THE CONTACT HEARD A HUMMING SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE. SHE ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE, BUT THE VEHICLE STALLED AND SHUT OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT A TRANSMISSION KIT WAS NEEDED. THE CONTACT DID NOT NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCES BEFOREHAND. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 94,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE FLOOR SHIFT INDICATOR SHOWS THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK, HOWEVER UPON INSPECTION, THE VEHICLE IS IN REVERSE. THE FLOOR SHIFTER MUST BE CHECKED AND RECHECKED BEFORE EXITING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION AND REPAIRED.
IN DECEMBER 2005 THE CAR STARTED EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH A DROP IN POWER BETWEEN 10 AND 20 MILES PER HOUR. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED IS AS SHIFT SURGE AND SAID THE TRANSMISSION HAD A LEAK, RESULTING IN LOW FLUID THAT OVERHEATED THE TRANSMISSION AND CAUSED INTERNAL DAMAGE. THE SURGE OCCURRED ON AND OFF FOR JUST A WEEK. NOW THEY SAY WE HAVE TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AND QUOTE OF $2,000 PLUS FOR A REBUILT TRANSMISSION. THEY STATED THAT IF WE HAD TAKEN THE CAR TO THEM THE FIRST SIGN OF SHIFTING, THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIX IT. A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THIS CAR FOR TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKS. I HAD TAKEN THIS CAR TO THE SAME DEALER IN OCTOBER NO ONE MENTIONED ANY RECALLS. IT IS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND HOW A TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED WITHIN FOUR YEARS. HOW CAN I DETERMINE IF THE PREVIOUS OWNER ACTUALLY HAD THE WORK DONE THAT WAS NECESSARY PER THE RECALL? IF IT HAD NOT BEEN DONE, WHAT LIABILITY DOES THE DEALER REGARDING THIS? THE DEALER SAID NOTHING ABOUT THIS. I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN ISSUED IN 2004 FOR SHIFT SURGE. THIS IS EXACTLY THE RESULT OF THIS INTERNAL DAMAGE. IF THE DEALERSHIP RECEIVED THIS IN 2004, WHAT IS THEIR OBLIGATION TO MAKE SURE THE CARS HAVE BEEN APPROPRIATELY SERVED PER THE BULLETIN? MAY I SEE THE SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE? I AM SENDING A COMPLAINT REGARDING A 2001 MONTERO SPORT. THE VIN IS [XXX]. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH IS GOSSETT MITSUBISHI HERE IN MEMPHIS, TN AT LEAST FOUR TIMES SINCE LAST NOVEMBER REGARDING TRANSMISSION ISSUES. SPECIFICALLY, THE PROBLEM THAT I AM HAVING IS THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTS VERY SLUGGISHLY AFTER I HAVE DRIVEN AROUND 100 MILES STRAIGHT AT ABOUT 70 TO 75 MPH. THE DEALERSHIP HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND A REMEDY FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE LAST PROBLEM THAT I HAD WITH MY VEHICLE WAS DURING ANOTHER ROAD TRIP. THIS TIME THE TRANSMISSION AGAIN SHIFTED SLUGGISHLY AND THIS TIME THE TRANSMISSION RAN HOT AND SPEWED OUT TRANSMISSION FLUID WHICH IN TURN CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SMOKE BADLY FOR THE FIRST TIME AND I HAD TO PULL OVER ON 3 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS WHICH MADE FOR A LONG TRIP HOME. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY AND AGAIN THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING MECHANICALLY WRONG. THE SERVICE MANAGER NAMED [XXX] RECOMMENDED THAT I HAVE THEM INSTALL AN AFTER-MARKET CONDENSER TO HELP KEEP THE TRANSMISSION FLUID COOL. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO AGREE TO THIS BECAUSE THEY CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE. THIS AFTER-MARKET CONDENSER THAT WAS INSTALLED AT THIS DEALERSHIP IS NOT A MITSUBISHI PRODUCT. WILSON STATED TO ME THAT THIS PRODUCT IS USED MAINLY ON VEHICLES THAT ARE USED FOR TOWING, BUT I HAVE NEVER USED MY VEHICLE FOR TOWING NOR DOES IT HAVE A TOWING PACKAGE. THE DEALERSHIP CHARGED ME $268 DOLLARS FOR THIS PRODUCT INCLUDING LABOR. SO, NOW I HAVE A BRIGHT SILVER TRANSMISSION FLUID CONDENSER JUST BEHIND THE GRILL OF MY MONTERO SPORT. IT IS VERY NOTICEABLE. 2001 GALANT ES DEVELOPED PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION.*MR THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BEGAN SLIPPING IN AND OUT OF GEAR, WHICH RESULTED IN THE CONSUMER HAVING THE VEHICLE TOWED. THE CONSUMER HAD TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS BECAUSE OF THE RECURRING TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. IT WAS DETERMINED THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED UNDER THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. THE CONSUMER STATED THE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION IS NOW SLIPPING, HOWEVER THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND ONCE AGAIN IT WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE TRANSMISSION, EVEN THOUGH THE DEALER CLAIMED THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED FOR THE SECOND TIME. ON JUNE 2, 2005 THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN SLIPPING IN AND OUT OF GEAR AGAIN AND THE CONSUMER NOTICED WHITE SMOKE EMITTING FROM THE TAIL PIPE, MOMENTS LATER THE VEHICLE WAS ON FIRE. AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, IT WAS DETERMINED THERE WAS A TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK FROM A LINE WHICH LED FROM THE TRANSMISSION TO THE LOWER PART OF THE RADIATOR AND WAS USED AS A COOLER LINE. *JB
WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH TRANSMISSION FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS.*AK
