NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2006 Nissan Altima. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I have replaced the water pump, the belt, the thermostats, the rotors, the brakes, the fuel pump, the evap vent valve solenoid, the spark plugs, and fuel injectors and my car is STILL throwing the codes P-0462 and P-447. I've checked the wires and they are good. My car keeps misfiring and stalling now and my fuel pump doesn't have a fuel level sensor. The float bar is brand new as well as the fuel pump. And my dashboard speedometer is 10 miles off. I've tried everything and it's still throwing the same codes.
Cvtc transmission stalls almost got my kids and my pregnant daughter hit I bought the car only 2 months ago
Me and my fiancé had just picked the kids up from my mom’s. Got about 2 miles down the road and all of a sudden i heard a loud boom and a flash of light like a shot gun had went off in my ear. When I heard the boom my left side from my face to my hip felt like I had been hit. At the same time it happen with me it happen on the passenger side where my fiancé was sitting. I was able To pull to the side of the rd. I got out call law enforcement and looked around my car and it had not been hit so I open my door to get my kids out and that’s when I seen it was the airbags . They exploded and the reason I didn’t notice them when I got out of the car is because they was not inflated they had exploded. There is a huge hole in the top of each side air bag, it busted the inside of my passenger side door and threw shrapnel over to my driver side dash. He and I both are hurting on the side the airbags went off and he has a artificial hip on the side it hit him so I’m hoping it didn’t do anything to his hip

The contact pulled to the side of the road and allowed the vehicle to cool off and added oil to the engine and the smoke subsided. The contact became aware of oil around the bumper of the vehicle. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle however, oil had to be added often for the vehicle to operate as intended. The dealer was contacted to schedule an appointment however, the vehicle had not been taken to the dealer. The dealer confirmed there was no recall or warranty coverage on the vehicle. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 105,000.
I started my vehicle, as usual, and when driving at a very slow speed (neighborhood speed limits) I approached a very busy intersection and the car just stopped. Not only did it stop, it would not steer and a bunch of warning lights came on the dashboard. Tav I believe, oil, check engine light. Even with the key in the acc mode, the power steering was not functioning. Everything just stopped functioning. I know this vehicle was recalled for the same exact thing back in 2008, but obviously it wasn't permanently fixed. Recall #07v-527. If I would have been in the middle of an intersection and this happened I could have been killed.

The crankshaft or camshaft sensor has went out which causes it to stall or immediately die, which is a safety hazard yes the check engine light was on
Vehicle is experiencing excessive oil consumption. I had to replace rack and pinion steering and vehicle is using excessive amounts of power steering fluid. I purchased both headlight assemblies due to not being able to align properly.
The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled upon the depression of the accelerator after coming to a complete stop. The contact was uncertain if any warning lights appeared during the failure. The contact was able to pull the vehicle off the road and into the entrance of a parking lot. Hydroplaned while entering a toll Plaza on 9/22/2021. Crashed into the cement jersey wall and guardrail. Car was totaled with front end, driver's side, and driver's side rear-end damage. Airbags did not deploy. The vehicle is being housed at a tow lot and will be available for inspection until I receive a duplicate copy of my title from DMV. My safety was put at risk due to the fact the airbags did not deploy upon front-end impact. The vehicle was towed directly to the tow lot from the crash scene and the issue has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center. The vehicle has only been inspected on scene by highway patrol, police, and tow company representatives. There were no prior warnings, messages, or symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The only warning lamp illuminated at the time of incident was the service engine soon light.
Last year i had the same issues with my 2003 nissan sentra gxe that i am now facing with my 2006 nissan altima. The serpentine belt comes off because of the harmonic balance and this ones ac clutch locked up and is wobbling plus my transmission acts irratic snd the starter csused the cwr to stall and catch fire! Th3 stress and agony of dpending all my savings fixing the car to end up stuck anyways and this is ongoing problems that keep reoccuring in all piece of sh** nissans and they want more money id like to file a lawsuit ! #BOYCOTT NISSAN
UNKNOWN: While driving the car will stall. After restarting it, the car will then be stuck in fifth (highest) gear. The SES (Service engine soon) light comes on. The first time this happened, after the next trip, the SES light went out. Then the same thing happened. This is a danger because if this happens in heavy traffic, it could lead to a collision.
WHEN I LIFT MY CAR (NISSAN ALTIMA 2006 ) AT THE MECHANIC TO DO REPAIR JOB , I DISCOVERED A HUGE RUST HOLE AT THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SITE AT THE FRONT OF THE CAR , I SHOCKED , IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN , FOR ME AND FOR MY FAMILY . THE RUST IS DEEP , WIDE AND PENETRATING , MY MECHANIC ADVICE ME TO SELL IT OF ANY PRICE BUT I DONT WANT TO SELL IT FOR ANY ONE , BECAUSE I HAVE A FAITHFUL CONSCIOUS , AND MORALS , I BEILEVE IN KARMA , I WOULD NOT DO IT FOR ANY BODY , EVEN THE CAR HAS ONLY 71,600 MILES , I DONT DRIVE IT ALOT , BUT FROM NOW ON , I AM NOT WILLING TO DRIVE IT AT ALL , OR LET MT DAUGHTERS GET IN THIS CAR FOR A VERY SERIOUS SAFTY CONCERNS , A HUGE RUST IN THE FLOOR .

MY VEHICLE'S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON ONE DAY SO I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR SO THEY REPLACED IT. THEN RIGHT AFTER I LEFT MY LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC AGAIN AND HE SAID IT WAS THE SAME CODE FOR THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR. AFTER CHECKING IT AGAIN THE MECHANIC SAID THERE IS SOME SORT OF ELETRICAL PROBLEM THERE BECAUSE IT TELLS HIM TO"CHECK CIRCUITS" BUT EVEN AFTER MESSING AROUND WITH THE CIRCUITS MY LIGHT IS STILL ON.
THE GAS GAUGE ISN'T ACCURATE THEREFORE I DONT KNOW WHEN IM ALMOST OUT OF GAS WHICH CAUSED MY CAR TO JUST CUT OF IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC

The car won't start
ON APRIL 27, 2020, I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY @ABOUT 70MPH AND MY CAR JUST SHUT IT SELF OFF, I TRIED TO CRANK IT OVER AND OVER AND WOULDNT STARTBACK UP BEFORE I HAD TO PULL OFF THE HIGHWAY. I HAD NO WARNING OR NOTHING. IT WOULDNT START BACK UP UNTIL HOURS LATER AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT HOME. WHEN I SAY HRS I'M MEANING ATLEAST 6HRS. ON APRIL 28TH 2020 I WENT TO START MY CAR AGAIN THIS MORNING AND IT WOULDNT START AGAIN. I HAVENT TRIED IT SINCE. I WAS TOLD THAT IT CAN BE THE CRANKSENOR I DID A TOTAL RECALL ON MY CAR AND IT SAIDS THERE IS A RECALL ON IT BUT NOT FOR MY CAR.
EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. MY CAR STARTS TO GET DIFFICULT TO DRIVE ABOUT EVERY 200-300 MILES. START TO HEAR A CLUNK, WHEN I ADD OIL IT IS OK BUT ONLY GETS 16-18 MILES A GALLON VS THE 28-30 IT SHOULD GET. ENGINE IS BURNING THROUGH 2 QUARTS OF OIL EVERY WEEK. THIS MAKE MODEL AND YEAR ALREADY HAS A RECALL ON IT BUT THE WEB SITE IS SAYING THAT MY VIN NUMBER HAS NO OPEN RECALLS. THIS CAR IS THE SAME AS THE CARS COVERED BY THE RECALL. IT CAN'T BE A COINCIDENCE THAT MY VEHICLE AND HUNDREDS OF OTHERS, FROM THE SAME YEAR ARE DOING THE SAME THING BUT. NISSAN IS ONLY COVERING CERTAIN ONES. NISSAN NEEDS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM FOR ALL 2006 ALTIMA'S WITH EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. IT IS COSTING $12 A WEEK FIR OIL AND MY GAS MILEAGE IS DOWN BY 1/3.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V527000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED INTO NEUTRAL, THEN PARK, AND THE VEHICLE RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ROYAL NISSAN (9325 AIRLINE HWY, BATON ROUGE, LA 70815, (225) 924-0400) AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE RECALL REPAIRS COULD NOT BE PERFORMED UNTIL THE VALVE COVER GASKET AND CAMSHAFT WERE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 29,500.
FUEL PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED 3 TIMES AND FUEL FILTER KEEPS CLOGGING AND FUEL SENDING UNIT WONT WORK .
The fuel gauge stopped working. Fuel gauge shows full all the time. Error code is P0462. Mechanic replaced fuel pump module assembly and this did not fix the problem. Check engine light is on and will not go off and the code will not clear.
I TOOK MY 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA TO THE SHOP TO PURCHASE TIRES AND UPON PUTTING THE VEHICLE ON A LIFT, THE MECHANIC CALLED ME BACK TO SHOW ME A GAPING HOLE ON BOTH THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AND FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. IF THE CARPET WERE LIFTED, YOU COULD SEE THROUGH TO THE ROAD ON BOTH SIDES. BOTH FLOORBOARD PANELS WERE RUSTED INCREDIBLY BADLY. AT ANY TIME MY DOG OR GRANDCHILDREN COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. I AM UNAWARE OF HOW LONG THE HOLES HAVE BEEN THERE BUT JUDGING FROM THE SEVERITY OF THE RUST, I WOULD SAY IT HAS BEEN 5+ YEARS SINCE THEY STARTED RUSTING. IT WAS HUGE GAPING HOLES, SO MUCH SO THAT I BOUGHT A NEW CAR.
MY DRIVERS SEAT IS STUCK RECLINED AND IT WON'T MOVE ANYMORE (PARKED).MY DRIVERS DOOR WON'T UNLOCK (PARKED). MY ENGINE CONTINUOUSLY RATTLES AND THE CAR STALLS (DRIVING NORMAL STREET OR HIGHWAY).THE FUEL GAUGE DOESN'T WORK ACCURATELY (PARKED DRIVING ON STREET HIGHWAY OR IDILING). THE BRAKES AND ROTORS ARE CONSTANTLY GETTING REPLACED AND SQUEAKED SINCE THE DAY I GOT THE CAR ( STOPPING).
ON 5/23/19 MY SON WAS DRIVING THIS CAR ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE CAR BEGAN TO DECELERATE AND COMPLETELY STOPPED/SHUTDOWN ON THE HIGHWAY. IT'S A BLESSING HE WAS NOT INJURED/KILLED WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK REVEALED A SENSOR THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, SO AFTER AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR ON 5/24/19.THEN ON 5/25/19 WHILE DRIVING TO WORK, THE CAR BEGAN TO DO THE EXACT SAME THING AGAIN AND STOPPED ON THE HIGHWAY. NISSAN NEEDS TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE WITH THIS CAR ASAP BEFORE SOMEONE GETS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED!!!
VEHICLE TRIES TO START BUT WON'T. VEHICLE IS STATIONARY WHILE TRYING TO START. BATTERY IS FINE, THERE'S ENOUGH GAS, IT TRIES TO START BUT WON'T TURN OVER.
THE BRAKE LIGHT AND BATTERY LIGHT COME ON SIMULTANEOUSLY THE CAR FEEL S LIKE IT WANTS TO STALL. BUT GOES AWAY. THEN IT HA COMING ON MORE AND MORE AND AS I DRIVE ALL OF A SUDDEN ALL MY RPMS SPEED GO FROM 40 ,60 OR AT 80 DROP TO ZERO . LIKE THE CAR WANTS TO DIE BUT KICKS BACK ON. IT HAPPENS AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT OR DRIVING THE INTERMEDIATE BRAKE BATTERY LIGHT COMING ON. ONCE THE CAR WARMS UP IS WHEN I NOTICE IT STARTING. IT HAPPENS ON CITY STREETS, BUT THE ALL RPMS AND SPEEDOMETER DROPPED SEVERAL TIMES LAST WEEK 9 TIMES IN A 15 MILE SPAN AS I WAS ON A INTERSTATE.
NISSAN NEEDS TO TAKE OWNERSHIP FOR THEIR HORRIBLE VCT TRANSMISSIONS. I HAVE AN ALTIMA AND TRANSMISSION JUST WENT OUT ON ME. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND THERE IS THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS WITH TYE SAME ISSUE!!! THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL ON CVT TRANSMISSIONS AS THEY ARENT MENT TO BE PUT ON CARS AND NISSAN KNOWS THIS! NOW IM BEING TOLD IT COST THOUSANDS TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. FOR WHAT FOR ANOTHER CRAPPY TRANSMISSION WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS. RECALL NOW!!!
THE FUEL GAUGE IS INACCURATE AND THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHTS ILLUMINATES WITH FAULT CODE P0462. MONEY SPENT UNNECESSARILY ON BRAND NEW FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. OCCURS BOTH STATIONARY AND IN MOTION PROBLEM OCCURS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING 40 TO 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE CAMSHAFT SENSOR AND CRANKSHAFT SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER AND DEALER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,000.
CRANKSHAFT SENSOR WHEN I WAS DRIVING MY CAR AT A SPEED OF 40 MILES AN HOUR MY CAR SHUT OFF CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON CAR WOULD NOT START HOW TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED THE MECHANIC PULLED THE CODE IT CAME UP AS CAM SHAFT SENSOR AND CRANK SHAFT SENSOR I ASKED MECHANIC WHY THE CAR SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AND ALMOST CAUSING ME TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT HE TOLD ME THAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE CRANKSHAFT AND CAMSHAFT SENSORS GO OFF
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY VIBRATED, THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED, AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS FAULTY. THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED AND THE FAILURE WAS REMEDIED. ALSO, THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD DISPLAY INACCURATE READINGS AND WAS INOPERABLE PAST THE HALF FUEL MARK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE SHOOK AND VIBRATED DUE TO LOW OIL LEVELS. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER AND LOCAL DEALER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 136,000.
I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MY ENGINE TWICE, MY EMERGENCY BREAKS STOPPED WORKING AND THE I THINK IT'S CALLED THE TRANSMISSION BUT ANYWAYS MY CAR TENDS TO JERK AND HESITATES TO CRANK SOMETIMES. I HAVE HAD MY STARTER LOOKED AT AND REPLACED AND ALSO BATTERY BUT IT STILL HAPPENS. I HAVE HAD THREE DIFFERENT MECHANICS LOOK INTO IT AND THE COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT.
WHEN I DRIVE THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE LIGHT CONSTANTLY POPS ON AND OFF THE CAR CONSUMES A LARGE AMOUNT OF OIL EACH WEEK, I HAVE TO CHECK THE OIL AND KEEP A CASE OF OIL WITH THE FILTER IN MY TRUCK TO CONSTANTLY FILL IT UP. THE CAR DRAINS GAS LIKE CRAZY, AND IT'S SLOW AND DRIVING AND SLUGGISH. THE CAR HAS CUT OFF ON ME IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING WHERE I HAD TO SPEND OVER $500 TO GET IT REPAIRED.
I WAS DRIVING 2 WEEKS AGO N I WAS DONIG ABOUT 45 OR 50 WHEN IT JUST SHUT OFF BY ITS SELF NO WARNING OR NOTHING N ITS COSTED ME LOTS OF MONEY ON TOP OF JUST REPLACING ALMOST THE WHOLE FRONT SUSPENSION I WAS ON A CITY SREET IN MOTION WHEN IT JUST CUT OFF 6
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65-70 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE SHIFTED INTO LIMP MODE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE CRANKSHAFT POSITIONING SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V527000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 131,000.
BROUGHT MY CAR TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP FOR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON 9/19/2018. PRIOR TO COMPLETING THE SERVICE THEY TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS RUSTING UNDERNEATH THE PASSENGER SIDE. I COULDN'T PICTURE WHAT THEY WERE DESCRIBING SO I ASKED TO SEE AND I TOOK A PICTURE. SUBSEQUENTLY, I WAS INFORMED BY SOMEONE ELSE (NOT NISSAN) THAT THIS HAS BEEN A LONG STANDING ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE, MODEL & YEAR (2006). IT POTENTIALLY COULD AFFECT MY SUSPENSION/STEERING AND ALSO CAUSE A PASSENGER TO FALL THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE. I FOUND OUT THAT THEY EVEN SENT OUT A 13 PAGE ILLUSTRATED BULLETIN TITLED "FLOOR PANEL REPAIR" ON 7/6/2015 TO THE DEALERS ABOUT A KIT THEY DEVELOPED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM; YET, THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL. JUST TODAY, 12/11/19, I INCIDENTALLY FOUND OUT MY PARTICULAR DEALERSHIP HAS HAD NUMEROUS CASES FOR THE NISSAN PATHFINDER. UNSURE OF WHAT YEAR(S) BUT IT WAS A HUGE ISSUE AND THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A RECALL IN THOSE INSTANCES. THERE IS A HISTORY OF THIS WITH ALTIMAS 2002-2006 & MAXIMAS 2004-2008. I'VE ATTACHED A COPY OF THE BULLETIN. BUT WHAT MADE MATTERS WORSE WAS BETWEEN 1/9/19-3/20/19 THERE WERE A NUMBER OF SEVERE POTHOLES ON NJ 95 SOUTH OF WHICH KNOCKED MY SUSPENSION/STEERING OFF. (55-60MPH). IT FELT LIKE ALL OF THE WHEELS WERE COMING OFF. THIS ADDS TO THE RISK THE ERRODING PANEL LEADING TO THE AXLES, OTHER SUSPENSION, ETC. POSES & COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AT ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING.
I HAVE REPLACED MY CRANKSHAFT AND CAMSHAFT POSITIONING SENSOR AND WHEN I GET MY CODES READ IT KEEPS COMING BACK ON AND MY CAR DIES AT RANDOM TIMES
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 NISSAN ALTIMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED AND PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S HOME WHERE AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE CRANK SENSOR WAS FAULTY. THE DEALER (GREENACRES NISSAN, 5353 LAKE WORTH RD, GREENACRES, FL 33463, (561) 899-4294) STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED HAVING THE DEALER DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT ALLOW THE CONTACT TO PURCHASE MANUFACTURER APPROVED PARTS TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AT A LOWER COST BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 112,000.
I BROUGHT MY ALTIMA 6 MONTHS AGAIN, MY CAR IDLES VERY HIGH WHEN IN PARK, WHILE DRIVING IT GETS SURGE OF POWER, SO NOW WHILE DRIVING IT FEELS LIKE IT IS GOING TO CUT OFF. THAN 3 WEEKS AGO MY CAR CUT OFF AND WOULDNT TURN BACK ON SO THE STARTER WAS REPLACED NOW THIS MORNING IT'S THE SAME ISSUE
