The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 MPH, the front driver-side steering airbag was inadvertently deployed. The air bag emitted black smoke, a chemical substance, fractured her watch off from her wrist due to the impact, and the steering wheel seized. As a result, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crash into a second parked vehicle. During the crash, the driver sustained injuries to the upper left leg and left hand, neck, left shoulder, and torso injuries along with a left forearm laceration and chemical burning from the air bag deployment. A police report was taken at the scene and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the incident. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 84,000.
TAKATA RECALL: I WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 5MPH ON A DIRT ROAD WHEN THE AIR BAG DEPLOYED. I WAS NOT HIT BY ANYTHING AND DID NOT HIT ANYTHING. THE SEAT BELTS ALSO LOCKED UP.
MY WIFE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, WHERE THE VEHICLE ROLLED OVER. ON THE WAY HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL, WE WENT TO THE LOCATION THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO REMOVE HER PERSONAL EFFECTS. WHILE INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, I FOUND THAT HER SEAT BELT (DRIVERS) WAS TORN IN TWO PIECES. SHE HAD REMOVED HERSELF FROM THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO POLICE AND EMS ARRIVAL, AND SHE DIDN'T NOT USE ANY OBJECTS TO TEAR THE SEATBELT. THE TOW OPERATOR, WHOM WE SAW AT THE TOW YARD, SAID THE SEAT BELT WAS ALREADY TORN WHEN HE WAS MOVING THE VEHICLE. *TR
