NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2008 Nissan Rogue. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
A light on my car's dashboard started flashing, indicating a problem with the airbag. This started after two days of not driving.
The contact owns a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving on Highway I-10 at 65 MPH, there was an extremely loud popping sound coming from the vehicle. The contact immediately pulled over, assuming there was a failure with the tire. Upon further investigation with her parents, it was determined that the tires were intact, and the abnormal sound came from the side air bag deploying unintendedly. Additionally, the seat belt seized. The vehicle was towed to the local Nissan dealer, where it was diagnosed with an erroneous rollover detection by the crash sensor, which triggered the deployment of the side air bags. The crash sensor detected a rollover, causing the side airbag to deploy. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and filed a case, and informed the contact that a response would be provided later. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Air bag light flashing and tire pressure light stays on
On February 6, 2025, while driving at highway speed, the lower radiator hose ruptured, causing complete coolant loss. The CVT transmission overheated, seized, and the engine was destroyed. Vehicle lost motive power at speed without warning. Repair estimate: $20,356.16. Vehicle declared total loss and sold for salvage at $400. Nissan Technical Service Bulletin NTB14-002b acknowledges this identical failure chain in 2008-2012 Rogues and prescribes a supplemental cooler kit (cost under $85) as the fix. Nissan has not included this VIN in any recall despite the identical mechanism. Loss of power at highway speed constitutes a safety-related defect under 49 U.S.C. § 30118.
The contact owns a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the driver's side air bag warning light continued to blink on and off. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V521000(AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced that same failure listed in the recall. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 112,851.
AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE RPM WILL SKYROCKET AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT MOVE FORWARD. WE HAVE TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND LET IT SIT FOR A FEW HOURS BEFORE IT DRIVES NORMALLY AGAIN. LATELY THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN BUCKING WHEN SHIFTING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE.

After driving roughly two hours on highway in stop and go rush hour traffic, our 2008 Nissan Rogue lost its ability to accelerate and the RPM would go only slightly above 2000. There were no dashboard warning lights. We pulled over at a rest stop and turned off the engine for ten minutes but the problem persisted. We had to get off the freeway and take back roads out of concern for our safety. We reached our destination, the then car sat for several hours and behaved normally for about an hour on the way back, but then the problem recurred. We only drove short distances for the next month, but on our next long drive the same thing happened again. Our mechanic found no engine codes and does not know what is causing the problem. This all happened only about 3000 miles after we had a new OEM transmission installed. For over two months, we have been unable to take any long trips with this car out of concern for both our ability to complete the trip and for our safety as well as the safety of others.
1.Frame bracket has rusted out and dealer only sells whole frame. VERY EXPENSIVE *It is obviously an issue which has not been addressed but has been *noted on internet. (went after market to repair still at $775!) 2. Airbags system light now on and was on recall in the past. Dealer will only look at it for $100. * Noted on internet as a continuous issue for some. 3. Cruise Control on past recall. Has not functioned since dealer fixed in recall. *Still turns on by itself and will not go off unless I turn vehicle off. **Definite safety issue** 4. Parking brake not functioning properly was also on recall. If I use it then it will not release all the way and continues to drag. USELESS. Have had repaired 2 times by mechanic since recall. 5. Transmission replaced on SILENT recall with extended warranty. Had issues from almost the start. WHY would I purchase another Nissan of any type? Vehicle 2008 Nissan Rogue is 13 1/2 years old with only 76,000 miles. No way should it have these issues. It has never been in an accident! I love the vehicle but not these issues. I will be replacing this vehicle in the future with a competitor.

My car has started leaking water onto the driver's side floorboard. I thought it might be from the sunroof and cleaned out the channels on both sides of the car. There was a recall years ago about a harness causing a problem with leaking water and possibly causing electrical problems. I took the car in for the repair. They told me that they fixed the problem. My car has started leaking again as it rains. The leak is getting worse and I need some advice. I am retired and have very limited funds. Transmission is failing, torque converter problem code p0744, torque converter locks and car won’t make it uphill
I bought Rogue on the 17th of Sept, 2021. 5 days later something in front on passenger side made noise and my steering wheel went to the right. Mechanic said it was rack and pinion that came loose. It was 2 miles after I got off freeway. I could have killed someone! Or myself.
Sudden loss of power while driving on highway after a few hours. Car cannot exceed 40 MPH.
Sudden loss of power after driving on highway for a few hours. Car does not go above 2500 RPM or 50MPH. Shutting car off for a few minutes fixes the problem until it happens again a few hours pater.

The approximate failure mileage was 57,000.
The TPMS lamp for tire pressure sensor, stays on. It appears there may have been a recall on this. I just made a complaint about the passenger airbag light showing it does not sense when a passenger inns in the front passenger seat with seatbelt fastened and car is running or driving. I just bought this car from a private party. Below is the picture of the lighted TPMS pressure sensor lamp.
The passenger airbag warning light shows the airbag will not engage when a passenger is in the front seat. I just bought this car used from a private party. The photograph below shows when the ignition is turned on and I am sitting in the front passenger seat with my seat belt on. The light never turns off when I’m a passenger or when I have a passenger in the front seat. I am afraid the airbag will not work in a front end collision.
The contact owns a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that the air bag warning light constantly flashed while driving. Additionally, the passenger’s side air bag warning light remained illuminated while passenger’s seat was occupied. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. Issue with airbags system and horn. Horn decided not to work any longer
The transmission shudders, jerks, whines, roars loudly. Yes it’s available for inspection. I was driving up a hill with my grand children in the car, and it started shuddering. Didn’t seem to be getting gas at all. The tank was full. Then it started rolling backwards down the hill. Needless to say my grand children were scared to death as I was also. No I haven’t spoken to anyone about the problem, as I don’t know who to talk to? Nobody has looked at it yet. I figured the transmission went, so I haven’t bothere$ with reaching out, until a friend told me hers did the exact same thing. So we looked it up. Yes it seemed to be shuddering before but never lost power and rolled backwards. There were no warning lights, or signs of it quitting. There was no acceleration at all. Just slowly lost power. It was still running but when you push the gas pedal you got nothing. Not even the reving of the motor!03/29
THE AIRBAG STARTED TO FLASH AND IT WON'T GO AWAY. I KNOW THAT THIS MODEL HAS A RECALLED ON THAT PROBLEM, AND I'D LIKE TO HEAR WHAT CAN I DO TO FIX IT. THANK YOU!
AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT FLASHING AND PASSENGER AIRBAG DISENGAGED LIGHT ON WHEN DRIVING SHORT DISTANCE WITH A PASSENGER. THERE IS A RECALL NTB08-95 BUT NISSAN TELLS ME IT DOES NOT INCLUDE MY PRODUCTION RUN. BUT MY CAR IS DEMONSTRATING THIS PROBLEM JUST AS DESCRIBED IN RECALL. RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE MY PRODUCTION RUN. BROUGHT TO NISSAN DEALER 10-27-20, IT WILL COST $3200.00 TO REPLACE PASSENGER SEAT CUSHION JUST AS DESCRIBED IN RECALL CAMPAIGN.
AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT FLASHING AND AIRBAG OFF FOR PASSENGER SEAT EVEN THOUGH HUSBAND SITTING IN SEAT. FLASHING STARTED AFTER 2 MINUTES DRIVING VEHICLE. FLASHING LIGHT DID NOT TURN OFF FOR 20 MINUTE JOURNEY TO AND FROM LUNCH. CONCERNED ABOUT DRIVING CAR AGAIN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 NISSAN ROGUE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT PASSENGER OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM WAS DEFECTIVE AND WOULD NOT OPERATE AS NEEDED. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE PASSENGER'S SIDE AIR BAG REMAINED TURNED OFF WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN. THE CONTACT INITIALLY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DON FRANKLIN LEXINGTON NISSAN (3360 RICHMOND RD, LEXINGTON, KY 40509) WHERE THE COMBINATION SENSOR WAS REPLACED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. UPON RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO THE ORIGINAL DEALER, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD A DEFECTIVE OCS SENSOR AND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 08V521000 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA FOR ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 85,000.*DT*JB
The contact's stepsister owns a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that the passenger’s side air bag light remained off while occupied or while unoccupied. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 08V521000 (Air Bags, Electrical System) which he linked to the failure. The contact's stepsister called the dealer and was provided an estimate for the repair after being informed that her vehicle was not included in the recall. The contact then called and informed the manufacturer of the recall however, the manufacturer stated that they had no record of the recall. The manufacturer then referred him to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.
WE TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO VAVOLINE AND THEY TOLD US THAT THE CAR'S TRANSMISSION PAN IS ALMOST RUSTED OUT AND WE HAVE A 4 MAJOR LEAKS UNDER OUR VEHICLE SO BAD THAT THE BLOCK UNDER THE VEHICLE AND THE FRONT AXEL IS WET FROM THE FLUID LEAKS. WE BOUGHT THE CAR TWO DAYS AGO AND BROUGHT IT BACK TO RETURN IT TODAY BECAUSE WE WERE NOT TOLD ABOUT ANY OF THESE ISSUES AND THEY TOLD US WE WERE NOT GOING TO GET OUR MONEY BACK. EVEN THOUGH IT WOULD NOT PASS A STATE EMISSIONS TEST WITH ALL THOSE LEAKS AND SHE NOT HAVE BEEN SOLD TO US.
THE GAS GAUGE DROPS TO EMPTY AND THE LOW FUEL LIGHT WILL COME ON WHEN THE CAR IS STARTED ALMOST ALL OF THE TIME. AND THE FUEL GAUGE WILL SHOW HALF FULL AFTER BEING FILLED OR EVEN WHILE DRIVING. IT MAY ALSO SHOW EMPTY AT ANYTIME. IT MAY OR MAY NOT RETURN TO THE TRUE LEVEL IN THE TANK AT SOME POINT. YOU SIMPLY DO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN THE TANK WITHOUT USING THE TRIP ODOMETER TO TRACK YOUR MILEAGE BETWEEN FILL UPS. THE GAUGE IS OPERATIONALLY USELESS. ADDITIONALLY, THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON WITH THIS MAKING THE STATE INSPECTION A PROBLEM AND REQUIRING A REGULAR CHECK TO MAKE SURE SOMETHING ELSE HASN'T GONE WRONG. MONITOR CODE DISPLAYED IS PO463-FUEL LEVEL SENSOR A CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT. NISSAN REALLY NEEDS TO DIAGNOSE AND FIX WHATEVER THE PROBLEM MAY BE. THIS IS AN ONGOING DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MANY NISSAN ROUGE OWNERS BASED ON WHAT I HAVE SEEN IN COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME PROBLEM POSTED TO THE INTERNET CAR FORUMS AND MY OWN EXPERIENCE.
I HAVE A 2008 NISSAN ROGUE. HAVE HAD IT LESS THAN A YEAR. 3 DAYS AGO, WITHOUT WARNING, THE TRANSMISSION STARTED SHAKING AND JERKING WHEN I WAS TAKING OFF FROM A RED LIGHT ON THE WAY TO TAKE MY DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL. PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY AND SAT A COUPLE MINS, SINCE I WASNT SURE WHAT WAS HAPPENING. AS I TRIED TO PULL BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY THE ROGUE WOULDNT GO. HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED BACK HOME. HAD A TECHNICIAN PUT MY VEHICLE ON A COMPUTER. THE TRANSMISSION IS OUT OF IT.
PASSANGERS'S SEAT BELT LIGHT ON. TRANSMISSION SLIPPING WHILE IN MOVING FORWARD
While driving to work passenger airbag light came on and wouldn't shut off, regardless of whether or not a person was sitting there, in addition the airbag warning light on the dash also came on. I took the car to an independent mechanic who told me it was an OCS issue (Code B1018). After a little research I found a recall for this issue on my model car (NHTSA Ref# 08V521000) but my VIN is excluded. Contacted a local dealer and was told it would likely be $2,500 for a new seat cushion. This severely affects any passengers safety in my vehicle and should be addressed by Nissan.
THE AIR BAG LIGHT STARTED FLASHING WHEN NO DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE CAR.
THE TRACTION LIGHT BLINKS ON AND OFF RANDOMLY AND THE CAR SLIPS/JERKS ON ANY TURNS. ALSO AWD AUTOMATICALLY COMES ON WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY WITHOUT ANY INCLEMENT WEATHER OR BAD ROADS PRESENT.
STARTED VEHICLE AND DROVE WELL. STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION AND WHEN IT WAS MY TURN TO GO CAR RPMS WERE HIGH BUT CAR WOULDN'T MOVE. THE LIGHT CHANGE AND I FOUND MYSELF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION AND CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I TOOK MY FOOT OF GAS AND THEN IT JUST SPED UP AND I HAD TO USE THE BREAKS TO MAKE IT SLOW DOWN. ALSO IT WOULD SLOWDOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WHICH IS DANGEROUS CAUSE SPEED LIMIT WAS 70MPH AND I COULDN'T MOVE THE CAR TO GET IT OUT OF THE WAY.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 NISSAN ROGUE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VDC AND TRACTION CONTROL INDICATORS ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. ONCE RESTARTED, THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. ALSO, WHILE MAKING TURNS, THE STEERING WHEEL MADE A STRANGE SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FAULKNER NISSAN OF HARRISBURG (3925 PAXTON ST, HARRISBURG, PA 17111, 717-558-8220) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ELECTRONIC COUPLING FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 36672455. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 NISSAN ROGUE SL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER AIR BAG OCCUPANT SENSOR FAILED INTERMITTENTLY WHILE THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS OCCUPIED. OVER TIME, THE SENSOR COMPLETELY FAILED AND THE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT FLASHED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THIS OCCURED IN JULY OF 2019 AT MILEAGE 175213. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO BE DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT DID NOT KNOW OF A RECALL ON AIRBAGS ON HER YEAR AND MAKE OF VEHICLE UNTIL FEBRUARY 2020. A DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE CONTACT LINKED THE FAILURE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 08V521000 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) HOWEVER, THE MFG SAID THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS EXPERIENCING THE SAME SYMPTOMS THAT THE OTHER 2008 ROGUES THAT WERE RECALLED DID, THE MFG REFUSED TO INCLUDE THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF THE FAILURE BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT RESEARCHED THE COST TO FIX THE FAILURE AND IT WOULD BE OVER $2000. THE MFG TOLD THE CONTACT THAT DUE TO THE CURRENT MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE, 190218 AS OF FEB 2020, THEY COULD NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. CONTACT WAS TOLD THE CAR WAS TOO OLD AND HAD TOO MANY MILES FOR THEM TO GIVE ANY ASSISTANCE.*DT*JB
BOUGHT CAR IN 2012 WITH 64,000 MILES. IN OCTOBER OF 2017 , WITH 121,000 MILES NOTICED A GRINDING NOISE WHEN TAKING OFF TOOK TO NISSAN DEALERSHIP , WAS INFORMED THAT TRANSMISSION WAS BAD. REPLACED TRANSMISSION FOR $3700. IN JUNE OF 2019 WITH 138,000 MILES STARTED HAVING A VIBRATION IN THE FRONT WHEN TAKING OFF IN BETWEEN 1500 AND 2500 RPM WAS TOLD THAT TRANSMISSION WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED IN THE INSIDE, THE PUMP WAS NOT WORKING AND METAL SHAVINGS. I AM WITHOUT A JOB AND HAD TO TAKE MY SEVERANCE PAY TO PAY $4,107 TO REPLACE ANOTHER TRANSMISSION. THAT DID NOT INCLUDE THE RIGHT TIE ROD THAT I CONSTANTLY HAVE TO REPLACE WHICH SEEMS TO GO OUT EVERY YEAR. FIXING BOTH LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND THE REAR SUSPENSION AT OVER $1200.00 THE WEEK BEFORE THE TRANSMISSION. THIS CAR IS WELL TAKEN CARE OF OIL CHANGES EVERY 3,000 MILES AND CONSTANT UPKEEP.
