NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2018 Nissan Rogue. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
When driving down the road my Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) sensor trigger when nothing is in the road. Causing the AEB go off when nothing is there. This happens often. Is there a recall on the 2018 Nissan Rogue AEB?
The contact owns a 2018 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while attempting to reverse, the rear-view camera became inoperable. The contact stated that the rear-view camera image was intermittently frozen and occasionally reset while the vehicle was in reverse. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000. The VIN was not available.
2018 Nissan Rogue. With just over 96,000 miles. I have been working on cars for 35 years and understand mechanics at a professional level. What component or system failed or malfunctioned?: Oil level sensor. Oil temp sensor. Knock sensor. Complete rod bearing failure. Outrageously high Oil temperature and Oil consumption. Rod Bearing started knocking. There were no warning lights or Low Oil level warnings. I was driving home from work yesterday and out of nowhere the rod bearing started knocking with no previous symptoms. I Immediately pulled over and checked the oil level. It was literally dry as a bone. It was so low I had to add 2.5 quarts to even show on the dipstick and 3.5 quarts to get it to acceptable levels. Not only did this literally ruin my engine, it's going to cost over $6,000 to repair. This is obviously related to the current lawsuit against Nissan for the exact same issue involving 2019-2026 models and should have also included 2018 models. This is an incredibly dangerous safety concern, as an unlubricated engine and/or overheated oil can cause total engine lock up and friction welding of internal engine components (which is what happened to me) can lead to serious accidents, stalls, and is a massive fire and explosion danger. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not Yet Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? NONE! Vehicle is avaliable for inspection upon request: Yes
I took my Rogue into a mechanic shop for a juddering/grinding noise when turning at low speeds. Upon further investigation, the mechanic found a recall (NTB20-069) for the AWD. This recall is the exact issue I am currently having with my car and they are stating there is no open recall on my VIN. I am writing in to note that the issue applies to more cars than just the ones on the bulletin. They also repaired a recall for the automatic braking system 6 years ago. The system was replaced but only lasted 5 years because that is when they assumed the 100,000 mile warranty would be over and owners would need to pay to replace it.
AEB system engaged momentarily with no external stimulus to cause it to do so. This has happened twice in about the last three weeks or so. The momentary (probably less than a second) response of the system was noticeable but did not cause an accident or other issue. The system dash light also illuminated and then turned off.
Driver display, dash, lights all shut off randomly! Bluetooth disconnects. Reconnects right away. Like if it has a short. Does this especially on long trips.
The front passenger car door failed to lock. It is considered a safety issue as it can leave the vehicle vulnerable to theft and may also pose a risk while driving if the door opens unexpectedly. It's important to address this problem promptly to ensure safety and security. There were no warning messages indicating the failed lock. I just happened to pull the handle and that door opened when all other doors remained locked. Prior to this discovery, I had experienced an incident where someone went through my car and took out valuables (coins and cash) but I was unaware that the door was not locking. Once the issue was identified, I took the car to the dealership for diagnosis, and the issue was a short in the door lock actuator (4 door 2018 Nissan Rouge). I took the car in for immediate diagnosis and costly repair ($852.03) as I did not feel comfortable driving or parking a car which could not be locked. (I am unable to upload the repair invoice, tried as a pdf and jpeg.)
Driving 55 mph down road when my 2018 Nissan rogue SL AWD automatically slammed on the brakes by itself. Lights on the dashboard flashed and it made horrible breaking sound The force flung me forward but seat belt locked up holding me in place. There was absolutely nothing or no one fffcccffin front me. Luckily no one was behind me eor they would’ve hit me. Can’t figure out a way to turn off this safety collision feature because it’s a put hazard!
Head lamp on Driver side collect moisture (condensation) for no apparent reason. This vehicle was inspected at a local Nissan Dealership on 4/13/26. No exterior or interior damage noted. The moisture in the lamp causes the light from the lamp to be dim. Notice that the passenger head lamp is much brighter. I don't drive at night ....not sure if the on coming traffic can tell that I am driving a SUV.
around 170,000 miles the vehicle started to feel like it was jerking when you went to pull off. eventually when you put it into reverse and barely press the gas, the engine would rev loud and you can hear the transmission get loud and the car would start to jerk driving backwards. driving down the road after around 30 mins you can feel under the gear shifter and the center console will start to disperse heat to where my leg starts to get real hot. sometimes it jerks and hesitates to take off way more then often. i have got a friend that does mechanical work to look at and drive the vehicle and he says that yes it is a transmission issue.
This seat is part of Recall Campaign 24C-002 (Unintended Harness Release). I performed the manufacturer's approved remedy (installation of the fabric debris shield/cover) a few months ago. THE REMEDY HAS FAILED. despite the installation of the shield and ensuring the mechanism is clean, the harness retractor still slips without the button being pressed. The manufacturer's mitigation kit does not resolve the safety defect. The seat remains unsafe for use.
The contact owns a 2018 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that after loading groceries into the trunk, she reached into a hidden compartment in the trunk when the rear liftgate unexpectedly closed. The contact tripped and fell on the pavement, injuring her cheekbone, wrist, and knee, and sustained a black eye. The contact received medical treatment. The contact stated that the failure had occurred twice previously, but she had been able to push the rear liftgate door up before the most recent failure. Additionally, the rear liftgate inadvertently opened while the vehicle was parked and turned off. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000.
Randomly when driving, the pedestrian crossing message will show in the dash and the brakes will kick on. It's happened too many times. The Nissan logo has been cleaned and the radar sensor does not have any fault codes showing. But the emergency brake will kick on and it has almost caused accidents.
The passenger side of my 2018 Rogue door lock actuator failed last year. I am unable to enter through my front passenger door. Earlier this year (2026) the driver side door lock actuator also failed, often leaving me locked out from both sides. I have to leave the door unlocked to ensure I can get into/out of my car.
The door locks on the front 2 doors do not lock when the car key lock button is pressed. You have to manually lock those doors everything you get in and out. You also have to manually unlock them each time to open them
The heating system does not heat, only blows cold related to the known issue with the blend door component. I live in the North East and this results in visibility issues as I can not get the heating system to blow hot to keep the windshield and side doors clear. The repair is to replace the entire heating box. My local mechanic has verified this is the issue with the heat and many forums for this vehicle confirm this is a known defect of design.
The contact owns a 2018 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle for the State Inspection, the contact was informed that two unknown sensors had failed. An independent mechanic reset the unknown sensor codes and advised the contact to return after 100 miles. The contact followed the instructions and returned to the State Inspection; however, the contact was informed that the failures persisted, and the vehicle failed inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
The malfunction warning indicator comes on and the car idles high. You have to pull over, turn off the ignition and turn the car back on.The dealerships can not find the reason .Happens sporadically .The light came on permanently 11/18/25.
The Intake Manifold Control is not working correctly for an unknown reason. It causes a heavy idle and the car to struggle going up hills at times.
Sometimes car will not accelerate after coming to a complete stop. It has happened on several occasions with the most recent stated below.
My side airbags deployed unexpectedly and without impact while riving down the street. I was in my neighborhood, close to my home, and suddenly the passenger side airbags deployed. The car shut down immediately. There is no impact to the side of the car and no dents (pics attached) I have a "malfunction" error on my screen. I don't know why this happened. My safety was at risk because if I was on the highway and this happened, it would've caused an accident. Also, I have just dropped off my child. If this happened 15mins sooner she would've been injured.
My sunroof exploded as I was driving on route 495 near Mansfield Ma Friday October 10th at approximately 3:42 pm. I heard a loud noise sounded like a gunshot and glass flew everywhere. The glass shattered everywhere also in my hair as well as on the seats both front and back seats. My safety as well as other drivers on the road could have been compromised. Luckily, shaken from the shattering of glass I was able to go into the breakdown lane to aces the damage. My insurance company was closed and is also closed today I will report it to them tomorrow.
While driving at approximately 15–20 mph, my vehicle suddenly started beeping and displayed a quick warning message on the dashboard before the brakes locked up on their own. The incident lasted only a few seconds, but it was extremely alarming. This same issue has now happened twice, both times in the exact same location on the same road, driving at about the same speed. The first incident was roughly around [XXX], the second incident was [XXX]. On both occasions, I had my [XXX] twin daughters in the car with me, and it frightened all of us. Thankfully, there were no vehicles directly behind me either time, otherwise it could have resulted in a rear-end collision. I believe there were cars ahead of me, but they were far enough away that I don’t think they triggered the sensors. Both times it was sunny, dry weather, and the road conditions were normal—no rain, no slick surfaces, and no obstacles in front of me. I am not sure if sunlight could have affected a sensor, but it appears to be related to the vehicle’s automatic emergency braking system or another electronic braking malfunction. The problem has not yet been inspected or confirmed by a dealer, but I plan to have it checked as soon as possible. NHTSA Complaint Statement Vehicle Information 2018 Nissan Rogue SL AWD VIN: [XXX] Component Affected Power Train – Rear Differential / AWD Electric Coupling Assembly Summary of Problem The rear differential electric coupling assembly failed, causing AWD malfunction and unsafe driving conditions. Nissan issued Technical Service Bulletin NTB20-069 acknowledging this defect on 2014-2020 Rogue AWD vehicles built before certain VINs. My vehicle’s VIN is within the affected build range, yet I was told it is not covered because it is “not part of the recall.” Safety Concerns Failure of the AWD coupling affects vehicle handling, especially in wet or slippery conditions, creating a significant safety hazard. Request I believe this issue should be treated as a formal recall so that affected owners are not left with expensive, unsafe repairs for a known defect. In a car accident 08/25 and airbags did not deploy.
Issues accelerating from a complete stop. Happens sporadically, unable to replicate for mechanic, and no codes or warning lights. Has become a safety issue when needing to cross left at any intersection. Doesn’t not accelerate fast enough to safely cross even after flooring the pedal for multiple seconds and no warning when this issue will occur so car gets stuck trying to accelerate in the intersection with oncoming traffic, near collisions on passenger side from oncoming traffic on a route taken multiple times a day as there are NO warnings prior to failure. Get stuck accelerating into intersection and can’t stop because cars behind me accelerate at a normal speed. Vehicle has been to repair shop.
2018 Nissan Rogue AWD: CVT Transmission problem. Grinding at high RPM and Transmission fluid leaks.
2018 Nissan Rogue with 110,000 miles transmission has failed and needs to be replaced. Stranded my granddaughter. Vehicle was inspected by a garage and they have confirmed that a new transmission is required. Cannot replace with a used one because there are none available since this has occurred in many vehicles apparently. No warning or signs of this prior to the transmission going out and unable to put into gear. The vehicle is available for inspection.
The vehicle has hesitated intermittently for some time. More recently, it becomes stuck in 1st gear, revving to over 4,000 RPM. The only temporary fix for both issues is to turn off the engine and restart. Service Visits: 1. 7/22/2025 – Tacoma Nissan – 77,663 miles - Reported intermittent sluggishness and hesitation when accelerating. - No codes found. - Requested CVT fluid check per TSB. Dealer refused unless I paid for a full fluid change. 2. 7/24/2025 – Korum Nissan – 77,731 miles - Paid for CVT fluid change since Tacoma Nissan refused to inspect without it. - Problem persisted. 3. 7/28/2025 – Korum Nissan – 77,960 miles - Reported hesitation and possible limp mode. - No codes found; no repairs made.I am filing this complaint regarding my 2018 Nissan Rogue S AWD with an ongoing CVT transmission problem. This model is known to be affected by documented transmission issues, and Nissan has issued multiple Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) — specifically NTB15-083b and NTB20-035a — covering situations exactly like mine, where the transmission exhibits hesitation, poor acceleration, or becomes stuck in low gear without storing any diagnostic trouble codes. Relevant TSB Guidance as It Applies to My Case: - NTB15-083b and NTB20-035a instruct that even when no DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) are present, service departments must follow Nissan’s CVT performance diagnostics. - This includes checking CVT fluid condition, inspecting for internal pressure loss, and assessing for mechanical wear that may require replacement. - These TSBs also address repeated hesitation, sluggish acceleration, or limp mode behavior that temporarily resolves when the ignition is cycled — exactly what my vehicle experiences. Despite three documented service visits in July 2025 confirming my complaints and matching these TSB descriptions, the dealerships did not follow the required TSB procedures or replace the transmission. With my factory warranty expiring on August 24, 2025, I am at immediate
The contact owns a 2018 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic, who diagnosed that the fuel gauge sending unit had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to AutoZone, where the diagnosis was confirmed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who also confirmed that the fuel gauge sending unit had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000
Driver door will not open from outside or inside vehicle. Based on research this is an acuator issue that Nissan has known about since 2014 & failed to issue a recall. I am in the process of costly repair @ personal expense for a clear safety issue the know about & have failed to address, & would like reimbursement for. I have had to climb over/out passenger side several times to enter/exit car, thus far not being trapped, however it is not safe to not be able to quickly exit vehicle. Nor safe to manuver over console to exit this way. Nor is it safw not to be able to enter your parked vehicle. Nissan needs to issue a recall & cover repair expense on all makes/models & all doors affected, checking all 4 doirs, not just the one or 2 doors malfunctioning as this can/will affect all 4 doors.
The contact owned a 2018 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 MPH, a second vehicle crashed into the front passenger side of the vehicle. During the crash, no air bags in the vehicle deployed, and the vehicle was destroyed. The driver sustained an injured left hand and lower back and neck injuries. The front seat passenger sustained a chest contusion along with back and neck injuries. Both occupants later received medical treatment. A police report was taken at the scene, and the vehicle was towed away. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not yet contacted regarding the crash. The failure mileage was 61,000.
Engine seems very weak. Not enough power to safely pass on a highway. Absolutely gutless and sometimes upon acceleration and/or braking it jerks.
The contact owns a 2018 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal sound. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was slightly uncontrollable while turning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with rear differential failure. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where the same assessment was made. The dealer provided an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin Number: NTB10-029I. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.
I was driving my car and out of no where for the first time I feel it shaking and making a noise, it did it for a min then it would stop, and it would continue this way every couple of mins. I had a feeling I should pull over yet there was no where I could pull over to on a busy road, so I kept driving, eventually I could not drive faster than 20 mph, my car would not let me. It would make the noise that a car makes when you have it parked and are stepping on the gas pedal, like revving the car. Eventually I pulled over once I could and then turned off the car and turned it back on, once the car was on it would literally not move at all. I could shift the gear stick with no issue to drive and all the other things but I could still not drive my car, it wouldn’t move, there was no parking brake on, nothing. It was on drive but it would not move. At this time there was no lights suggesting anything was wrong with the car. I kept turning it back on and off and then it worked until I got to my destination. Once I got to my destination I was not able to go back home. The car would simply not run. There was no warning lamps or messages of any kind prior to the incident. My safety and others was put at risk because I was on a busy highway and I was not able to drive faster than 20 mph at one point. A car could’ve came at mine driving at 65+ mph stated in the speed limit. I was even able to get off the road at that time either. It was a very scary experience. It wasn’t until the tow truck towed to car to my house that the warning lights came on. Turning on hours after everything had already happened. There was 6 codes that popped up when we checked the car all relating to the transmission. This is a very serious and dangerous situation. I am lucky I didn’t get hurt or anyone driving around me at that time. I don't have any images from the incident only a video that shows the cars speed dropping and getting higher on its own, it literally felt like the car was driving itself.
After driving for awhile it will take a minute once putting foot on the gas for car to take off at a traffic light. Also malfunction error comes up on dashboard and car starts to slow down and try’s to cut off. Have to pull over and turn off the car, wait for a few minutes then restart the car.
The contact owns a 2018 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH on the highway, the vehicle suddenly decelerated to 40 MPH. The contact stated that the vehicle was jumping while accelerating. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over safely and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to three independent mechanics who determined that there was a malfunction error and CVT judder. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 141,832.
Back up camera black out and on no volume with car play and radio not working. The it just stopped and with out warning will go out. Vehicle is available for inspection. Unable to see or getting warnings without back camera.
The CVT transmission in my 2018 Nissan Rogue failed catastrophically at 92,000 miles, far below industry standards for drivetrain reliability. This failure, tied to known defects and past class-action litigation, caused severe safety risks and financial hardship. Despite these issues being well-documented and covered in extended warranties for some vehicles, Nissan never informed me of any potential risk, leaving me unprepared. The failure caused a sudden loss of power, limiting the vehicle to 40mph, creating a dangerous situation, especially on highways where maintaining speed is critical. I had to drive the compromised vehicle to a Nissan dealership for diagnosis, putting myself & other motorists in danger. The issue was confirmed and reproduced during diagnostics, with an estimated repair cost of nearly $10,000. Before this, an independent mechanic had also diagnosed the problem, citing transmission failure with documented codes. However, Nissan refused to accept outside documentation, requiring diagnosis from their service center. No warning lights or dashboard messages appeared before the failure. Symptoms like difficulty accelerating and erratic RPM fluctuations began about a week prior but offered no formal alerts. Nissan’s refusal to provide assistance after the diagnosis cited the vehicle being out of warranty and my failure to use Nissan dealerships for regular service. This ignored challenges such as the rural location of their service centers and COVID-related limitations during my ownership. This failure highlights a broader safety & reliability issue with Nissan’s CVT transmissions, which the company has failed to address adequately through recalls or customer notifications. I urge the NHTSA to investigate these defective transmissions and require Nissan to take necessary actions, including recalls, to protect consumers from safety risks and financial burdens. The faulty transmission remains in my possession and is available for inspection upon request

Rear power lift gate on my 2018 Nissan Rogue will randomly close after being lifted. Happens at any time, whether the key fob, dash button or the button on the lift gate itself is used. The lift gate has hit my wife and I in the head multiple times causing minor injury. The car has been back to my Nissan dealer twice, they state the struts, sensors and modules are all working fine. They indicated they recalibrated the sensors. Not sure what the issue is but we don’t like the idea of paying the quoted price of $1200 to replace the struts since this may be a general problem with the car.
Shortly after purchasing the vehicle, I experienced a sudden and severe brake system failure that created an immediate safety hazard. While driving at low speed, the brake pedal traveled to the floor with little to no braking response. The vehicle could not decelerate normally and required significantly increased stopping distance, placing me and other motorists at risk of a collision. Following the incident, the vehicle was evaluated by an independent service provider. Diagnostic results indicated a brake fluid level fault, and findings were consistent with a failing master cylinder and/or internal hydraulic brake system malfunction. Although the brake fluid reservoir appeared full, braking performance was critically compromised, indicating an internal failure rather than routine wear or maintenance. There were no warning lamps, messages, or alerts prior to the failure. No brake warning light or other indication of reduced braking capability was present. The failure occurred without advance notice, eliminating any opportunity for preventive action by the driver. The vehicle had recently passed a state safety inspection and was represented as roadworthy at the time of sale. A vehicle with an internal hydraulic brake failure or compromised master cylinder should not pass inspection or be certified for use on public roads. Due to the seriousness of the defect and the immediate safety risk, the vehicle was returned to the dealer. Prior to return, no tow assistance was provided despite the known brake defect, requiring limited operation of a vehicle with unsafe braking capability and further increasing public safety risk. The defective condition was confirmed by an independent source and was reproducible in that braking performance was unreliable. Although the vehicle has been returned, this incident raises concern that similar vehicles may experience sudden brake failure without warning, posing a serious crash and injury risk to the public.
It has happened where I am driving on the highway with big vehicle's are next to me and it will brake and take me from 65 miles per hour down to 30 mph quickly . I always hope that no one is in back of me I fear that i will get in a accident for no reason . Please put a recall on this system !
There is a dash light coming on and warning saying “front radar obstruction” causing car to randomly brake, and cruise control not to work. Thought it was originally from a deer I hit March 30, 2025. Replaced sensors, cameras, emblem, checked wiring, recalibrated, multiple diagnostic test all done by more than one person. No one can figure it out even after replacing and testing it’s still happening. Insurance deemed it a coincidence that this started happening after I hit the deer and said problem is not from hitting the deer.
On 03/06/2025 my car got into an accident with another vehicle the whole pumper was damaged yet the air bags didn’t go off, and my child in the back seat with his booster, that the seat belt was supposed to hold the seat, the whole booster seat came off
Driver seat moves back and forth while driving, speed control goes wild while driving, transmission does keep gear nor speed level .. leaking out of motor while the car is turned off after driving for a couple of minutes.. key jackknife is very week.. the safety issues of this vehicle is very scary wrote a letter to Nissan never hear back to to dealship and they were unable to help me.. car still under extended warranty but no one wants to honor it.. very sad.. please help I can’t afford another car, can barely afford this one..
My drivers seat moves, the back is breaking off of the bottom, as I drive the seat moves and is breaking. This is a big safety issue. I took it to Nissan and they want to charge me over $5000.00 for parts to replace the finisher, the track/ frame and the seat back. This is a 2018 vehicle, driven by a small female, with 68,000 miles. This did not break, it is a defect, and Nissan should have to look at it and repair it. 2023 Rogues have a recall for exactify what is happening to my seat, I saw a recall for 2016 and 2014 Rogues for a seat issue as well. I believe my car has a safety defect and Nissan is not willing to help me.
When driving the seatbelt light indicator comes on, has been doing this for sometime and usually only happens when there is no passenger. When the passenger seatbelt is clicked the light (seatbelt indicator) goes off.
On Friday, 24 Jan 25, at highway speeds between 60 and 70 mph the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system unexpectedly engaged three times. On Sunday, 26 Jan 25, while in a neighborhood street the AEB engaged unexpectedly at 25 mph. That same day at highway speeds between 60 and 70 mph the AEB system unexpectedly engaged four times. Additionally, on that day the AEB warning light flashed and a chime was heard, but the system did not brake two times. This car was at a Nissan dealer on 2 Dec 2019 for recall 1-P9327 - Rogue AEB NTB19-064 and recall 2 - R1911 - NIS AV CONT UNIT MULTI TSB
My 2018 Nissan is having rear differential issues affecting the transfer case, I did see there was a class action lawsuit. My car is unable to go up any small ramps without stalling. I was told this issue will persist. I still owe the bank money. When I went to the Nissan Dealership they offered me 1,000.00 for my car. It is a 2018 with 108K miles on it.
