NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2020 Nissan Rogue. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
2020 Nissan Roogue S. The doors lock randomly when in vehicle or away from vehicle without using the key fob.
Car reported to have a fluid leak in the steering rack assembly. Advised could cause spontaneous fire of the vehicle unless the assembly is replaced ASAP. Approx 40 k mileage.
Días atrás se prendió la luz de airbag en el tablero y se siente mucho aire caliente al conducir los dealers me cobran mucho para un diagnóstico que puedo hacer?
Defecto de fábrica
I purchase the vehicle at 58,000 or so miles, used at a dealership. The next day I returned the vehicle because while driving out of town, the vehicle said: Warning, Warning -- This vehicle is not safe to drive. Some components may not operator correctly. Do Not Drive this vehicle. This happens when you're on the highway above 50 miles per hour. There was a smoke smell also inside the car and outside. Dealership said it was the breaks and kept the car 45 minutes to repair the breaks. They said this vehicle was never in an accident and past MD Inspection but the last page said, vehicle failed. They never explained why it failed inspection the first time. The dealership cannot fix it and ignores me mostly. they said its a sensor issue, a settings feature issue and to bring in the vehicle to reset the settings. the dealership said in so many unspoken words, its your problem. Ive had the vehicle about 2 weeks now.
When driving the forward collision warning will flash and beep and immediately brake and causes the car to come to a complete stop, when there is nothing in front of the car. It could cause an accident. I believe the forward collision warning sensor has failed. This has happened several times and it’s not safe for me or others around. I’ve started turning off the forward collision to avoid being in a accident.
Faulty heath unit it does not blow hot air inclement cold weather with humidity makes fog the windshield because you can not defrost your glass with warm air A lot of people on dangerous situation for their reason a lot of complains about this faulty issue in Nissan Rogues
The trunk will open and as you are putting stuff in the trunk it will automatically start shutting and does not stop even though you are under it. Very dangerous. You have to quickly get out of the way. I don't know exactly when it started but it's been awhile.
Cars automatic emergency braking activated for no apparent reason
[XXX] my car i just bought and financed was damaged. Carfax shows incident in Waco Tx. I financed my car 07/2024. Went and had my oil and tire rotation and found out my front Sub Frame is cracked and bent. This was never reported to carfax Jenkin Nissan found the problem.. I attached the last owner on carfax where the incident happened INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I was pulling into a parking space with my foot on the brake going about 2 mph. About 4 feet from a pole the engine raced and the car slammed into the pole. The airbags did not deploy. I was the only person in the car and my foot was still on the bake after the collision I asked Nissan to investigate and they said I would have to wait to get the car fixed for two months and store and tow it at my own expense. It was already being repaired and my insurance company will only pay for a rental for 50 days.
While backing out of the driveway or driving forward, the automatic brake engages without warning and without cause. Because of this, I was practically rear ended when driving forward. When backing out of the driveway, the suddenness and the shock of the incident was particularly alarming to my wife who was a passenger in the car , who has a history of having suffered 2 heart attacks. On the first report of the incident, the dealership replaced the sensors on the car. I recently took the car back to the dealership and they are saying they can't reproduce the problem. The warnings, a beeping noise, come at the same time as the engine shuts off.
The key fob and vehicle are not "reading" each other. The Rogue doesn't recognize the key. This has left me unable to start the vehicle on numerous occasions and I have been stranded.
When driving the front end collision light comes on and stops the vehicle in the middle of the road and there is nothing in front of the car. This is very dangerous if there's a car behind you and my car suddenly comes to a stop. I spoke to my dealer and they said this was common since that sensor is sensitive. They're sollution was for me to turn it off. So now I would not have front end collision warning or safety.

The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
UNKNOWN car has moved forward into drive while on park Lock not working
While driving the car, sometimes the collision light will come on and the car will automatically start braking even though there are no cars around
The contact owns a 2020 Nissan Rouge. The contact stated while stopped at a red light, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown part needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure was reported to the manufacturer, who suggested the contact proceed with taking the vehicle to a dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000.
After getting gas, I went to start my car and it started malfunctioning like it was having an electrical shortage. The battery was jumped off and it started like normal. The battery, alternator, & starter were tested and everything checked out, except the battery wasnt charged.
Crash detector light flashes on and off.
The airbag indicator light went on a couple months ago and they fixed it but said that a rolling water bottle under the driver's seat caused the airbags to get unplugged. A few months later, the airbag light went on again and it was disconnected again. The dealership is stating there's no way to prevent the airbags from getting disconnected.
The front censors activated during snow storm triggering the brakes to lock and steering wheel to lock. The car slid 50 yards across 3way stop sign intersection into a house front lawn. The same censors keep coming on all the time thinking that something is in front of car but nothing is there. I have recorded the censors lights on a few times. Nissan an Nissan dealer have told but no one seems to try to fix it. I'm filing a complain with NY State attorney general office. I can't take it anymore.
Driving during morning hours on 2 lane road approx. 30 mph and breaks fully engaged without warning or being physically applied. A warning light displayed on the dash but then went away after approx 15-30 seconds. No other vehicles were around and no road obstruction. No system updates or outstanding repairs exist for this vehicle. A Nissan service appointment is pending for investigation of sensors.
Yo he tenido dos frenados de emergencia sin haber nada en el frente. Pero no sabia que pasaba. Almenos no paso nada grave. Pero vi una noticia de Telemundo que el modelo que tengo de carro tiene problemas relacionados. Además mi asiento cuando acelero suena como si estuviera fracturado. Pero en la Nissan me dicen que está bien que no tiene nada malo.
USB port in console caught fire while vehicle was parked total loss
Was driving on a county highway in Mercer County, NJ that I’ve driven many times before around 40-45 MPH in perfect sunny weather, mid-morning, when suddenly the car slammed on the brakes on its own. It was a terrifying experience as it happened so fast and I had no control over the vehicle. The blessing is that no one was behind or next to me, but what’s unnerving is there was no one or no objects in front of me. It actually took me a few minutes to make sense of what happened. There was seemingly no logical reason the automatic emergency break system should have activated. I drove it slowly to the dealer and left it as it was a weekend. Next day they checked the car/sensors and could not find an issues and said the software was up to date. They opened a ticket with Nissan who advised to replaced and configure the sensor. I pray it doesn’t happen again but they can’t guarantee it won’t as they said they’ve had other complaints (which they report to Nissan). If someone had been behind me, I was driving faster, or bad weather was present it could have ended very badly. I’m terrified it could happen again that I plan to keep that feature turned off when driving on high speed or busy roads. The annoying part is you have to manually turn it off each time you start the car. I’ve only had it back for a day so not sure what will happen. While the dealer did all they could to help me and make sure my car was safe, I think these features/sensors need to be investigated, let’s not wait until someone dies or is seriously injured.
The sunroof is and side of the front window leak and caused the electrical system to fault. It happened in my 2017 rogue and again in my 2020. I have had it fixed twice and it still does it. They say it’s from dirt but as soon as they ran diagnostics and cleaned it out it leaks again. I have photos and documentation of both visits to the dealership and pics of the leaking.
In October of 2022, While I was driving my 2020 Rogue on a country road to a school event for my granddaughter, the car made a soft bell sound then it immediately slammed on the brakes for no reason that I can understand. I immediately pulled the car off the road. It showed a triangle with an exclamation point within it in the dash display. I shut the car off and when I restarted it the triangle was gone and it drove ok. I later read online that this could be an AEB issue. It was a clear day with no rain and no cars close in front and, luckily, behind me. It scared the hell out of my wife and I. I no longer feel safe in the car if it can do this for no reason! I brought the car into a Nissan Dealer to have it checked on 10/20/22. They did not find any problems with it. They also did not see any fault codes that something happened within the vehicle's memory. I find it unbelievable that the car did not record the fault. To me this means that Nissan has deliberately disabled this function for this fault. I have done a lot of research and apparently this is a well known issue with Nissan vehicles, not just the rogues. I have also read that there are 2 class action suits against Nissan for this. I brought the vehicle in again in Jan 2023 to get the car checked again for the False Activation of AEB, FEB, or FCW. This time I asked to have it checked per NTB18-041D and reprogrammed to the latest software and/or any required hardware to fix this well known issue. They said this NTB was not for my rogue and did not fix it. I have read that this is normal for this defect shown in the NTB. I am still afraid to drive this car and have only driven it about 400 miles since it was looked at. And now I only drive it with the AEB disabled as I was instructed by a tech in the service dept. I would really like to be able to use the AEB safety feature without fear of it falsely locking up the brakes while I'm driving. This Rogue only has 6835 miles on it.
While driving at 70mph on an empty highway, the car engages the AEB system and violently hits the brakes while no other vehicles or objects are present. Same thing happened on an empty city street a few weeks prior.
Over the past 6 months was when the following electrical issues began. I was traveling around 25 mph when my Foward Collison Warning signaled and led to the Automatic Braking Emergency engaging. There was no other vehicle or object around. I was in the countryside. The weather was clear. If this were to happen under different circumstances on a busy highway it would have caused an accident, most likely fatalities. The other drivers would have had no warning because the vehicle does brake hard even stop abruptly depending on speed. The vehicle locked up and I didn't have control over my vehicle anymore. Also more then once the Forward Collison Light came on when it was raining and/or dense fog. The brakes did not engage and the alarm did not sound but the warning still showed on the dash. It eventually stopped showing on my dash as I drove, but I did pull over and wipe the sensor area. Another problem I'm encountering is the Parking Collison Warning. Sensors are detecting something and being activated when there is no object behind vehicle. I even got out of vehicle to make sure because I didn't see anything in my camera. When I made sure there was nothing obstructing my travel I preceeded and the sensor stopped beeping. I have checked the Nissan website and entered my VIN but unfortunately there were no recalls for these malfunctioning sensors.
My wife has been feeling ill after being in our 2020 Nissan Rogue over the past year. We had noticed a very bad smell when it was first started about 7 months after owning it. It was purchased new with only 4 miles on it. The milage now is just under 14k We did some research and found out that we should look at the cabin air filter. When we removed it we found it to be covered with Black Mold. I replaced it and about 3 months later we were having the same issue. We had wrote to the Corporate office and CEO our letter and case was given to Madison an Executive Specialist our case number is Case #45577085 and her direct number is 615-725-7752 we were asked to meet with Paul Smith at Crown Nissan Greenville SC which we did. We also met with Ryan Baughman the Serice Director. They want to replace the entire system even though they did not see any obvious issues. That date has not been confirmed as the parts were not available at that time. The problem is that my wife is unable to be in her new car for any extended amount to time. I worry that Nissan is at one point going to tell us there in nothing more they can or will do. at age 68 we have never had any issue like this in all the vehicles that we have owned in Year Past. They suggested that once the new systems is installed that they would install a Carbon Filter. After a considerable amount to research we are not the only ones with this type of issue, but beyond that the bottom line is my wife feels ill after a short time inside this car which was bought for her. Any help would be greatly appreciated
While driving on a very busy highway, the hood of my 2020 Nissan Rogue opened without warning and smashed on my windshield. I stopped on the side of the road and thank God I was able to close it and was able to drive it home.
The car is doing a noise in the rear axle when make tight turns in low speed
El asiento tiene un ruido muy raro. Pero no se quita con nada. Y además el carro se me frenó una vez llendo en carretera.
The contact owns a 2020 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration while the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the vehicle was not yet diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 14,000.
Breaks slammed on without warning with nothing in front of vehicle. There where no vehicles within a mile ahead. There where 4 people in the vehicle and the seat belts did not lock up and passengers where slammed into the dash. The breaks have locked up twice now.
Pulling into Parking space at the Mall...went to brake and husband's foot got caught under brake pedal between gas pedal and brake. not able to release his foot to get on brake pedal car would not stop , put car into park did not stop we hit the car in front. This is the second Accident because of this issue....
I was stopped at a stop light, when it turned green I hit the gas and within a few seconds, an alarm came on and the car hit the brakes and stopped the car. There was no reason for this to happen. No one in front of me hit their brakes. If there was someone close behind me, I could've easily been rear ended.

Front right tire it feels like the ABS system is locking the tire when traveling on the FWY approximately between 60-65 miles per hour and it makes the car slowdown and pull to the right and then it goes back to normal. It has happened 2 times 9/15/21 and 9/30/21 Very scary situation.
For the past week I have experienced my gas pedal sticking when I accelerate to pass a vehicle at an increased speed. It takes several taps of the brake to get the pedal to unstick. The latest incident was yesterday on my way home from work. I took my car to a local Nissan Dealer and they said they determined it was the floormat, but I looked at that each time it happened and it is not over the floormat. I'm afraid to drive this car and don't know what to do about it.
Traveling between 35-40mph AEB comes on out of no where. There was no vehicle or obstructions in front of me in my lane at all. There was no warning lights or tones just instant loud braking. I have had it come on twice while backing down my drive but assumed it was picking up the curb or light post or cars in the driveway. This could have been a catastrophic incident had I been traveling at a higher rate of speed or there had been someone immediately behind me. I have contacted the dealership and we are working on what to do next.
Our airbag light (on the dash) came on and the "passenger air bag off" light came on as well, we took it to the dealership and they determined the airbag system needed to be replaced after owning the vehicle for only 1 year and told us that the vehicle was unsafe to drive and to limit our driving, if we were to be in an accident our airbags would not go off.
The contact owns a 2020 Nissan Rogue. The contact stated while driving 55 mph, the vehicle independently came to an abrupt stop as the automatic emergency brake warning light appeared on the instrument panel. The contact was able to resume normal driving after the failure however, the warning light remained illuminated on the instrument panel. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was 4,863.
TRAVELING ABOUT 40 MPH ON A TWO LANE LOCAL ROAD WHEN THE EMERGENCY BRAKING ACTIVATED ON ITS ON FOR ABOUT 3 SECONDS ALONG WITH A LOUD PULSATING FEELING AND NOISE.
THE FORWARD COLLISION WARNING LIGHT KEEPS BLINKING ON AND OFF AND ACCORDING TO FRED ANDERSON NISSIAN OF ASHEVILLE THEY SAID AFTER THE 3RD TIME IN THE SHOP THAT THE LIGHT BLINKING IS NORMAL. I HAVE THE SERVICE RECORD WHERE THEY SAID THAT.
WHILE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT ON APRIL 13, 2021 THE VEHICLE STALLED OUT.
WHILE DRIVING MY CAR STOPS WITHOUT PROMPT. IT GOES INTO N WITH OUT ME TOUCHING THE SHIFT. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE WHILE DRIVING AND THE CAR JUST STOPPED, LOOKING DOWN TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED THE CAR IS IN N. I AM AFRAID THIS MIGHT HAPPEN WHILE I AM DRIVING ON 95
DRIVERS SEAT IS LOOSE, HAS A TENDENCY OF MOVING WHEN PULLING OFF AND MOVES WHILE DRIVING. MAKES A RATTLING NOISE IN THE REAR OF VEHICLE ON PASSENGER SIDE, NOT SURE WHERE WHAT IS MAKING THE NOISE. BACKING MECHANISM IS ACTIVATE WHEN NOTHING IS IN RANGE.
I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 55 MPH NO VEHICLES IN FRONT OR BEHIND ME WHEN MY SCREEN FLASHED WITH A WARNING WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES. MY FOOT WAS ON THE GAS AND I HAD ZERO CONTROL. I'VE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY AED SENSOR BEFORE BUT NEVER LOSING CONTROL OF MY BRAKES.
