NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2013 Nissan Sentra. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
my CVT transmission is not working anymore because of the manufacture defect
My complaint is that Clear Lake Nissan failed to properly repair a recall on my 2013 Sentra. The recall is located at: https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2013/NISSAN/SENTRA/4%252520DR/FWD#recalls. The Recall Campaign Bulletin # NTB13-032b / Campaign ID#: PC213 / NTSA#: 13V-069. It is located at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2013/RCRIT-13V069-4312.pdf. The date of initial issue was 8/5/2022. Associate at Clear Lake Nissan committed to run repairs on CVT reprograming & repair of OCS recall to include sensor and seatbelt repair, parts, and labor. Clear Lake Nissan has not attempted to resolve the issue; instead told me they will have to charge me a diagnostic fee of $181 and then parts and labor to do the repair. I asked to speak to a supervisor or manager and was told they will reach out to me via a phone call, but I have yet to receive a call from either a supervisor nor a manager. Please see uploaded files to include a more detailed write up of complaint with specific recall details & explanation of events.
The vehicle will hesitate and stall when I am pulling out until traffic, causing me to almost get hit if there are any cars coming. When I go over 50mph on an incline, the RPMs will jump way high and the car will lose power in the middle of the highway. I will have to pull over and turn it off for awhile to get it to run again. There are no lights on at this time, but if I have the cruise control going, the Cruise light will flash and cruise will not work. Hitting Accelerate on the steering wheel cruise menu will move the car, but the gas pedal will not, and cruise control will not work.
Transmission problem lose of power and unexpected noise even with regular maintenance like transmission fluid change regularly in summer
When I would hit my breaks and sit at a red light . My car would start vibrating really bad and then force it’s self up even though my foot would be on the break and almost his someone walking and a few other times in a car . It also would shut its self off and back on . When I put it in park it would die and when I put it back in drive it would die . Sometimes turn its self back on & I have a push to start .
The wiring that connects to the throttle sensor is fraying and causes the car to stall unexpectedly when driving. If the car stalls unexpectedly it increases the chances of a fatal accident. There are no warnings, all the warnings appear when the car stalls. My safety is at risk because it stalls when driving unexpectedly and another car can hit me from behind causing an accident without warning.
I purchased this car in 2018 with 30k miles. In 2020 I had to replace the transmission. Now 2022 and I have to replace the transmission again. The car is decelerating and sputtering at times. But it’s not covered? How does a car have three transmissions within such a short time under 120k miles?
I have repaired the mass airflow sensor 3x’s by the dealership who sold me the car the last 2 times they didn’t make me pay for it.and I’m still having the same issue. My car will jerk and idle and I was driving and all of a sudden I loss speed and I was accelerating but the car was only moving about 5 miles per hr the cars behind me almost hit me in the rear end. The longer I drive the car the worst it gets. Then if u pull to the side and cut the car off and back on again it would run hard but it would get speed. Until I try to accelerate then it will stall again. This is a safety hazard especially on the interstate.
While driving my car will act like it's running out of gas, then it will kill, sometimes it starts right back up other times it won't, I have had the feul pump replaced and it's still doing it now have not had any codes till yesterday now it is saying my camshaft sensor is malfunctioning, it has killed in the middle of an intersection and almost killed on the highway, it acts like it can't switch gears but it is a cvt transmission, it cant seem to accelerate to well and has a hard time getting up to 60 mph and going up hills.
On Saturday morning about 12:03, my son was in an accident. the car rolled over, there were a total of 4 people if the vehicle. the air bags didn't deploy. the 4 people had injuries consisting of concussion, a shattered foot, sprained wrist, and other injuries. I have an open claim with the insurance company. there were no other vehicles involved. The police came to the seen and the vehicle will be investigated further.
Purchased the vehicle used in February 2018. For the first 3 years, no issues and serviced as on schedule. Driven less than 5000 miles per year. December of 2021, the vehicle randomly started to lose acceleration when trying to turn, posing a definite hazard. Taken for service and advised the entire transmission needs to be replaced. Though a used vehicle, I have seen several reports of the CVT transmissions failing and think this a recall issue.
Car has 79000 miles and is dangerous to drive the transmission lunges in and out of gear and it seems to be a common problem with this cvt transmission.
Unknown I don't have memory of incident.
The shift started locking, followed by consistent tugging while driving above 20 mph. It stutters and pulls when driving down hill which has caused me to pull over and restart the car in heavy traffic on the freeway. Now the car pulls so much it is not safe to drive above 20 mph. I have taken it to two service centers and both have confirmed the CVT transmission is faulty. No lamps or messages prior to the failure showed up. This started before the car hit 80,000 miles.
Transmission/Powertrain: Transmission slips throughout various stages of acceleration and deceleration exchange. Vehicle has not stalled (yet) but condition is worsening. Vehicle transmission does not deliver appropriate throttle response, resulting in risk to driver/passengers. In heavy traffic conditions, driver expects vehicle to respond to certain throttle pressure but vehicle will inconsistently deliver resulting in unexpected delays and/or lurches in movement, which has caused me to almost make contact with other vehicles moving at high speeds.
Transmission failed to shift during a left turn stalled in the street in the wrong side of the road. Diagnosis CVT transmission failure. Same issue I had two years and fully replaced the transmission in 2019.
Problem with transmission slipping
It says my vehicle has 0 unrepaired recalls, however I've noticed that these vehicles have reported fuel leakage due to faulty seals when the tank is full. I got the car used & I was wondering if I have any chance of getting this issue fixed
Nissan replaced my defective cvt and since that time my car rolls back when I am taking off from a stop at the top of a hill.
Passenger air bag turn off after being replaced from recall
The car shudders, makes a whining sound while driving seems to be transmission related
When I reversed in a parking lot, the tire arm on my front passenger tire broke, causing my car to lean on the tire. I found oil on the ground after my car moved. It had to get towed to the NISSAN dealership in Lincoln, NE. Before I got towed, I talked to the police because the damage was so significant. The dealership said that the ball joint came off because of a missing screw. I had no warning from my car or the dealership that there was a prior issue, only a loud noise and the oil on the ground.
Both my driver and passenger seat airbag signals are on and say they the seat is empty, when someone is in the seat, meaning if I crash neither airbags would deploy. I took it to the dealership and they said my VIN wasn’t covered by any recalls.
The transmission has broken down at 68,224 miles. We put it into Drive and it did not move however Reverse works. The transmission repair shop said that they have had several of these model years in over the last few months, all around 66k miles. There are not parts available so an entire transmission has to be ordered and replaced.
My car would shake, the rpm gauge jumps at 2, starts slowing down and jerking, doesn’t accelerate at times even when stepping on the gas. I almost caused an accident on the guest with a big rig. Maintained every oil change and tune up and service required. This started at 95,000 miles. With all the same complaints where is the recall to make things right
The mass airflow sensor is known to be an issue. I have had to replace it 5 times now since may 2021. I was trying to get on the street with oncoming traffic and it died and the car tried restarting while in gear. Luckily I was not injured. This is the #1 issue with this make and model of car. After this happened I went to see what the check engine light meant as it has been on for months even after changing the sensor and I could not drive my car. I changed the sensor in the parking lot to get home. How many people have to die before nissan corrects the issue? I can't read the mileage, gas usage etc even after changing the sensor. I drive blindly to these
The left headlight went our or so I thought until I tried to change it then it worked until I put the cover back on. Also the car beeps a warning but I never know what the warning is for. The mass airflow system sensor has been replaced 5 times as of today since 5-2021. It stalled and died leaving me scared as I tried to enter the road luckily o wasn't injured.inhave no info as far as mileage, fuel usage etc..
The CVT transmission failed at 83011 miles. My symptoms included whining and gurgling noises and bucking. Symptoms occurred at all speeds. Minor noises began several months before diagnosis by dealer. Did not cause an accident but unexpected total failure in highway conditions could have been deadly. This is a well know problem with Nissan CVT transmissions as evidenced by multiple class action lawsuits across multiple models and countless owner complaints reported including total, sudden transmission failure. Diagnosed as a failed transmission by dealer. Repair shop returned failed transmission to Nissan.
2013 Nissan sentra sr 66,000 miles transmission blew out, while driving on the street it sputtered, choked and lost power and started making a loud clanking noise.
This vehicle will not go forward or move backward. We were on the freeway ... luckily we were able to get car to drive forward before oncoming traffic hit us We were scared for our lives. We have reached out to Nissan of North America SEVERAL times about this and correcting the issue. We were just made aware recently by an attorney to try reaching out to you. They are refusing to fix issue or a recall vehicles. It is a CTC transmission issue according to mechanics. I was told that a consumer filed a suit against them for this COMMON safety issue but Nissan corporation of North America are refusing to do a recall. They are putting consumers through a lot of red tape so that they can save money while risking human lives. I’m scared that someone will be hit bad or killed because Nissan North America will not do a recall for consumers. I reported to Attorney General in Tennessee, the Home State of their Corporation but they are doing nothing seemingly regarding Nissans’s North America lack of concern for their drivers and consumers.
Ever since I first purchased the car it wants to die and it seems like it doesn't want to go when I press the gas. It does this when I stop or when I press the gas.
It was 108 degree outside at 4:30 pm in the zip code of 89052. At a sloped intersection on a major street I stopped for the light. When the light turned green I tried to accelerate the car, it failed to accelerate, the break did not function, and the steering was difficult. The car stalled. The car started rolling downhill. I was able to turn the car to the next street ~20 yards down the intersection. The street had no slope and no other cars at the time. The car eventually stopped. But that was a dangerous incident and it could be much worse.
CVT Transmission. Yes available for inspection. Vehicle was juddering/flaring Yes confirmed by dealer and independent service center No warning lamps or other symptoms besides the juddering/flaring First appeared around mid June 2021 The ServiceCampaign Bulletin dated 9/28/17 does not include our VIN#... even though the problem is identical! Because our VIN was not included, Nissan refused to compensate us for this problem. There was a class action suit regarding this issue that has now expired. We are asking for compensation as this was a known Nissan issue and this vehicle is still relatively new with low milage.
Cvt Transmission my car just has 125,000 miles
My 2013 Nissan Sentra CVT transmission prematurely failed at 82,000 miles and is available for inspection upon request. One year ago (2020) my car started to shudder and stall when going from a stop, at 75,000 miles. I took my car to the Nissan dealership and they said that they felt the same issues when test driving it and contacted Nissan HQ to see if I qualified for the extended warranty. Nissan HQ requested that they check the transmission fluid and run some diagnostic tests and check for specific codes. In 2020, the Nissan dealership did as requested and found that the transmission fluid was black and smelled burnt or spent but reported that there were no shavings in the fluid. In 2020, they also could not get the specific diagnostic codes that were requested by Nissan HQ. When Nissan HQ got these results, they said that all my car needed was a transmission fluid change, even though this year's model is known to have CVT premature transmission failure. Currently, in 2021 my car started shuddering and stalling again along with new problems such as: kicking when putting the car in reverse, trying to shift gears at inappropriate times, RPMs racing even when on a flat, straight road with cruise control on. I took my car to get inspected by the Nissan dealership again and this time they told me that my car has "internal transmission failure" and is not recommended to be driven. The price for a new transmission is 4343.93 which is worth more than the car. Nissan HQ refuses to pay for this even though they know that this transmission has this problem. Nissan HQ claims that they cannot help due expiration of the extended warranty, this is unfair to people who gently drove their cars and took care of them which delayed the occurrence of the inevitable problem These transmissions are unsafe for the driver and those around and in the car and it is wreckless for Nissan not to have a recall on these transmissions.
The transmission is failing. The car is slipping, hesitating when accelerating . Also jerks like it punches into gear when driving and wants to stop at times. The car just now is getting 75,000 miles. I see this problem is the same among everyone else, this problem should be fixed as it seems pretty common. The Car sometimes wants to stop while I’m driving. I brought it to a mechanic and he said it’s the transmission is failing
PURCHASE CAR IN 2015. ON SEPT 27, 2017, MY TRANSMISSION BLEW. THE WARRANTY COVERED THE REPAIR. ON SEPT 12, 2018, THE TRANSMISSION BLEW AGAIN. I HAD TO PAY $3,106.83 OUT OF POCKET. ON MAY 7, 2021, THE TRANSMISSION BLEW AGAIN! I NOW HAVE NO WARRANTY AND NO MONEY TO REPAIR. I FEEL AS THOUGH I WAS SOLD A LEMON.
Bad transmission
I was in an accident a guy hit my front right side and insurance totaled it . My airbags never deployed
TRANSMISSION HAS STOP BEING AFFECTIVE IN A DRAMATIC TIME FRAME. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, NO PREVIOUS ISSUES, NOTHING CALLED OUT BY THE MANY NISSAN TECHS WHO HAVE WORKED ON THE CAR OVER THE YEARS. WHEN PUTTING THE CAR INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE, THERE IS A DELAY, FOLLOWED BY A HARD JERK INTO GEAR. WHILE ACCELERATING THE CAR STRUGGLES TO PROVIDE POWER THROUGH THE TRANSMISSION. THEN FAILS TO SHIFT INTO HIGHER GEARS WHILE ACCELERATING ON ALL ROAD TYPES. WHEN GOING TO ACCELERATE UP A HILL, I HAVE LOST ALL POWER WHEN PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. THE CAR NEEDED TO BE PARKED IN A NO PARKING ZONE, DUE TO THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER.
The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated while driving at 45 mph when the air bag warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to a local dealer who inspected the vehicle and found no issue and could turn off the warning light, however, after a few days, the warning light illuminated again. While driving at undisclosed speed, the contact was hit head-on by another vehicle causing damage to the front driver side of the vehicle. The air bag did not deploy. There was medical treatment at the scene. There was no one injured, however, the contact was unconscious for a minute and had some pain in their back but did not go to the hospital. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent body shop who did some repairs to the front driver side of the vehicle, and also inspected the vehicle and found issues with air bags and oil leakage to the engine but was not able to repair those issues. The vehicle was not fully repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage approximate was 210,000.
My 2013 Nissan Sentra transmission had to be replaced. I wanted to report this problem because Nissan in my experience have had transmission problems with some of their vehicles causing consumers to pay out of pocket for expensive repairs. My daughter has a 2015 Nissan Maxima whose transmission blew also. Also, I received a notice that my 2018 Nissan Pathfinder may have future transmission problems. Fortunately I traded this vehicle for a Toyota so I wouldn’t have this problem in the future. This is very concerning that all of these cars have the same transmission problem. Is there anything that could be done for Nissan owners?
TRANSMISSION VERY SLUGGISH ESPECIALLY TRYING TO ACCELERATE UPHILL. PERIODIC LOST OF POWER WHILE DRIVING. JERKING MOTION WHEN TURNING.
THE TRANSMISSION ON THIS CAR SHREDDED ITSELF TO BITS IN A DAY AT 86K MILES. IT MADE A VERY MILD GRINDING NOISE GOING INTO WORK IN THE MORNING ON AN EXPRESSWAY AND DRIVING HOME THE SAME NIGHT IT SOUNDED LIKE THE ENGINE WAS ABOUT TO JUMP OUT OF THE CAR. REVVING ENGINE WITH NO POWER ONLY FOR IT TO LAUNCH LIKE A ROCKET WITH NO WARNING, TERRIBLE CLUNKING, STALLING, THE WORKS, ESPECIALLY AT A STOP-START. I'VE RESEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND THAT NISSAN IS FULLY AWARE THAT THEY BREAK AROUND 80K MILES AND CHOOSE TO DO NOTHING ABOUT IT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 NISSAN SENTRA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE STARTED TO HESITATE. THE CONTACT STATED NO WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED SHE DECIDED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE THAT WAY. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING UP A HILL AT 25 MPH, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO MOVE FORWARD AND STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS. THE CONTACT USED THE PARKING BRAKE TO PARK AT THE BOTTOM THE HILL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO NIELSEN NISSAN (59 US-206, STANHOPE, NJ 07874, (973) 347-2200) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH NEEDING THE TRANSMISSION TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD BEEN INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 86,000.
WAS DRIVING TO WORK BUSY ROAD CAR BASICALLY SHUT DOWN TO LIMP MODE COULD NOT ACCELERATE VERY CLOSE CALL TWO CARS NEARLY SIDE SWIPED ME HAD TO CREEP AT 2MPH TO CURB. CALLED TOW TRUCK TOOK VEHICLE HOME WHERE IT SAT PROCEEDED TO TRY AND FIX CAR OVERTIME. HAS NEVER BEEN THE SAME SINCE.
DRIVING IN MOTION ON INTERSTATE GOING 60 AND ALL OF A SUDDEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND THEN VIOLENT SHAKES AND JERKS!SCARY AS ALL GET OUT MADE ME SWERVE AND ALMOST HIT TRAFFIC BESIDE ME!! ALSO GOING UP A HILL AND LOST POWER HAD TO STOP IN ROAD TURN THE CAR OFF AND THEN TURN IT BACK ON. ALMOST GOT HIT FROM BEHIND!
The contact owns a 2013 Nissan Sentra. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the passenger’s side air bag warning light was flashing. Additionally, the warning light remained off with an occupant seated in the passenger’s seat. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer on two separate occasions for diagnostic testing and was informed that the issue was related to the seat wiring. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who notified her of NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V681000 (Air Bags) however, the dealer informed her that her vehicle was not included in the recall. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
THE VEHICLE HESITATES SIGNIFICANTLY WHEN ACCCELERATING... AXTS LIKE IT DOESN'T SHIFT OUT RIGHT.... AND BOGS DOWN WHEN ACCELERATING AT NORMAL SPEEDS.
WE HAVE A NISSAN SENTRA 2013, WE'VE CHANGED THE TRANSMISSION WHEN VEHICLE HAD 80,000 MILES (ALMOST ONE YEAR AND A HALF AGO), VEHICLE DOESN'T HAVE 30,000 MILES AND IS BROKEN AGAIN, WHILE NISSAN KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND NOW THEY SAY THAT THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. SHAME ON NISSAN!!! THE WORST PART IS THAT THEIR OWN DEALERS KNOW THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE BECAUSE NISSAN TRANSMISIN BUILDER IS CHEAP AND THEY TEND TO FAIL FOR NO REASON.
