FAILURE CODE PO463 ON NISSAN XTERRA YEAR 2005 , FUEL LEVEL SENSOR MALFUNCTIONING VERY HIGH RISK OF WRONG READING ON FUEL GAUGE CAUSING VEHICLE TO STRAND MOTORIST. CODE IS P0463-I HAVE RESEARCH THE INTERNET AND IT LOOKS I'M NOT ALONE WITH THIS PROBLEM..PLEASE HELP US WITH THIS ISSUE> I'M SURE YOU ALREADY HAVE ANOTHER COMPLAINTS AGAIN THIS PROBLEM. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA THAT I BOUGHT PRE-OWNED. I HAVEN'T HAD ANY REAL PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE, AND HAVE BEEN KEEPING UP WITH SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE. I HAD MY FUEL SENDING UNIT IN THE VEHICLE MALFUNCTION, WHICH HAS CAUSED ME TO FAIL AN EMISSIONS INSPECTION AND HAS CAUSED SEVERAL INSTANCES OF RUNNING OUT OF FUEL AS A RESULT OF A MALFUNCTIONING GAS LEVEL INDICATOR. AFTER DOING EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ON THE ISSUE, IT'S APPARENTLY EXTREMELY COMMON AND NISSAN HAS FAILED TO RECALL THE PROBLEM. THEY RECALLED IT FOR EARLIER MODEL YEARS, BUT ALTHOUGH THEY'RE STILL USING THE SAME WEAK PART, HAVE YET TO RECALL IT FOR THE YEAR APPLICABLE TO ME (2005). *TR
I OWN A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT SUPPLIED BY NISSAN HAS GONE BAD 2 TIMES. I HAVE REPLACED IT ONCE WITH A NISSAN SUPPLIED PART. BOTH TIMES IT SAID THERE WAS A QUARTER TANK OF FUEL LEFT BUT THE TANK WAS ACTUALLY EMPTY. THE FIRST TIME MY WIFE RAN OUT OF GAS IN TRAFFIC. THIS A VERY COMMON FAILURE IN THE 2005-2010 MODEL YEAR NISSAN XTERRA AND VARIOUS OTHER NISSAN MODELS. I HAVE NOT REPLACED THE CURRENT BAD UNIT. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NISSAN TO GET THE PART REPLACED AGAIN, THEY TOLD ME NO. *TR
MY 2005 XTERRA GAS GAGE GOES TO EMPTY AND WILL NOT SHOW TRUE AMOUNT IN TANK. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR ABOUT 1 MONTH. ALSO THE CHECK ENGINE STAYS ON AND I KNOW IT IS FROM THE FILL VALVE FROM THE GAS TANK. I HAD ONE REPLACED ALREADY ABOUT 1 YEAR AGO AND THE PROBLEM IS BACK. THIS IS A RE OCCURRING PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN CONTINUING FOR THE LAST 2 MONTHS. ALSO THE LATCH FOR THE REAR HATCH SOME TIMES WILL LOCK AND NOT OPEN I ALSO REPLACED THIS ABOUT 1 YEAR AGO AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. *TR

COUPLE WEEKS AGO MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHILE I BACKING OFF MY DRIVEWAY. THEN MY BATTERY DIED A WEEK AFTER SO I THOUGHT THE REASON WHY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IS BECAUSE OF MY BATTERY IS RUNNING OUT OF JUICE. SO, I REPLACE MY BATTERY BUT THEN THE FOLLOWING DAY MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. THAT'S WHEN I WENT TO MY LOCAL AUTO SHOP AND GET MY X GET CHECK. THEY TOLD THAT IS THE ERROR CODE P0463. *TR
THE FUEL GAUGE ON MY '05 XTERRA READ E AFTER FILL UP. AFTER ECM RESET EVENT RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. ON TWO OCCASIONS ENGINE SHUT DOWN WHILE LEAVING MY DRIVEWAY. MISTAKENLY, I ATTRIBUTED THIS TO BAD FUEL AND/OR COLD ENGINE. THAT IS UNTIL YESTERDAY, DURING RUSH HOUR AT 60MPH THE ENGINE CUT OFF IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. NARROWLY ESCAPING A MAJOR ACCIDENT, THIS WOULD HAVE INVOLVED MULTIPLE CARS. I MERCIFULLY COASTED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE INTERSTATE. I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND TRIED TO RESTART. I REPEATED THIS PROCEDURE UNTIL ON THE FOURTH ATTEMPT IT RESTARTED AND I MADE IT TO WORK. THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AS I WAS LEAVING WORK THAT DAY ALSO. AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC AND SIMPLE QUERY ON THE INTERNET, I FOUND MY P0463 CODE TO BE RELATED THE FUEL SENDING UNIT, A WELL KNOWN AND ALL TOO COMMON ISSUE. IN FACT A RELEVANT SERVICE BULLETIN WAS ISSUED BY NISSAN. MOREOVER, A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR EARLIER MODEL XTERRAS. FREQUENCY OF THIS ISSUE AND MY SAFETY CONCERNS HAVE PROGRESSIVELY WORSENING. I REFUSE TO TRANSPORT MY CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE. (IMAGINE AN ENGINE SHUT DOWN WHILE TURNING LEFT WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC.) THOUGH NISSAN CUSTOMER CARE AND MY DEALER INDICATE NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED, I AM WORKING WITH BOTH THE RESOLVE. TO ME $26,000 IS A SUBSTANTIAL PURCHASE, AND COMMENSURATE PRODUCT QUALITY AND CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS EXPECTED. ABSENT NISSAN STANDING BEHIND ITS PRODUCT, THE ESTIMATED DEALER REPAIR COST IS $500+. THE POTENTIAL COST OF NOT REPAIRING THE FUEL SENDING UNIT ON ANY AFFECTED NISSAN VEHICLE IS IMMEASURABLE. *TR
FAULTY FUEL SENSOR UNIT "I HAD A FULL TANK OF GAS AND I TURNED ON THE CAR, AT WHICH POINT THE NEEDLE DID NOT REGISTER THE FULL TANK. AFTER DRIVING A COUPLE MILES, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I STOPPED THE CAR AND OPENED THE GAS CAP AND PUT IT BACK ON AND THE GAUGE CAME UP A LITTLE. AFTER DRIVING A COUPLE OF DAYS IT FINALLY WENT TO FULL. I CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A FUEL SENDING UNIT/SENSOR AND THAT IT WAS NO LONGER COVERED AFTER 36K MILES. AFTER RETURNING HOME AND DOING RESEARCH, I WENT ONLINE TO X.NISSANHELP.COM AFTER PERFORMING A SEARCH, I CAME ACROSS MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. APPARENTLY IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE FUEL SENDING UNIT. A SIMILAR PROBLEM WAS FOUND ON THE 2000-2004 XTERRA MODELS AND A RECALL WAS PERFORMED WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD STOP AFTER NOT GETTING ANY FUEL, POSING A GREAT DANGER. IT SEEMS THAT SOMETHING IN THE UNIT IS FAULTY AND WILL CORRODE OVER TIME. THERE IS A GENERAL CONSENSUS THAT EVERYONE WHO IS HAVING THE PROBLEM IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE FOR OVER 2 YRS AND PAID OVER 25K. IF THIS PROBLEM EXISTED IN PREVIOUS MODELS, AND IT WAS RECALLED, THE 2005-2007 XTERRAS, FRONTIERS, AND PATHFINDERS SHOULD GET THIS FIXED AT NO CHARGE TO THE CUSTOMER!! WHY WAIT FOR ACCIDENTS AND POSSIBLE DEATHS, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE PROBLEM LIES IN AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE VEHICLE. COST OF REPAIR RANGES FROM $300-800 DEPENDING ON DEALER." *TR
NISSAN'S X-TERRA OFF-ROAD EDITION MODEL IS EXPERIENCING FUEL GAUGE FAILURES AT OR AFTER 45,000 MILES. I HAVE OWNED TWO IDENTICAL VEHICLES, SOLD ONE, HAVE ONE REMAINING THAT MY MOTHER DRIVES. BOTH SUV'S HAVE EXPERIENCED IDENTICAL FUEL GAUGE FAILURES. AN INTERNET SEARCH REVEALS THAT I AM FAR FROM BEING ALONE IN EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUES AS THE PATHFINDER MODEL IS ALSO SEEING THE SAME FAILURES INDICATING THERE'S A DEEPER PROBLEM HERE. THE FAILURES ARE STARTING TO OCCUR AS EARLY AS 45,000 MILES WHICH IS SLIGHTLY OUTSIDE THE STANDARD 36,000 MILE WARRANTY PERIOD. THIS IN TURN ENDS UP PUTTING THE COST FOR REPAIRING THIS DEFECT BACK ON THE CUSTOMER TO THE TUNE OF $500 TO $700. MUCH OF THIS COST IS DUE TO THE LABOR CHARGE INCURRED IN PULLING OFF THE FUEL TANK TO ACCESS THE SENDING UNIT. IT IS UNREASONABLE TO EXPECT A FUEL SENDER GAUGE FAILURE AT 45,000 MILES AS THERE ARE MILLIONS OF VEHICLES ON THE ROAD THAT DO NOT EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM AT ALL DURING THEIR OPERATIONAL LIFETIMES. IT IS MY SINCERE HOPE THAT THE NHTSA WILL INVESTIGATE AND FORCE NISSAN TO REPLACE THIS DEFECTIVE FUEL SENDING GAUGE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH, THE CONTACT STATED THAT VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE WHEN HE DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 80,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 97,000.
THE FUEL GAUGE ON MY 2005 NISSAN XTERRA SE DOES NOT READ ACCURATELY. WHEN I FILL THE TANK THE DISPLAY NEEDLE DROPS TO BELOW "E" AND SHOWS THE FUEL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATES. THIS BEGAN IN NOVEMBER 2009 WITH ABOUT 70K MILES ON THE VEHICLE. NISSAN RECENTLY ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS VERY PROBLEM BUT LIMITED IT TO MODEL YEAR 2006 AND 2008 XTERRA'S. NISSAN WANTS TO CHARGE ME ALMOST $600+ TO FIX THE PROBLEM ON MY 2005. A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH OF 'XTERRA FUEL GAUGE' WILL SHOW MANY MORE COMPLAINTS FROM PEOPLE WITH 2005 AND 2007 XTERRA'S. THESE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. *TR
WHEN GETTING TO A SPEED OF 55 MPH AND ABOVE I WOULD START TO HEAR A RUMBLING SOUND. I HAD MY LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE FRONT RIGHT U-JOINT. I HAD THEM REPLACE THE U-JOINT AND WHEN I PICKED IT UP AND WAS ON MY WAY HOME THE SAME RUMBLING SOUND WAS STILL OCCURING. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY KEPT IT A TWO DAYS AND THEN TOLD ME THE REAR AXIAL WAS CAUSING THE NOISE THE IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD THEM REPLACE IT WHICH COST ME $2000.00. AGAIN, WHEN I PICKED IT UP AND WAS ON MY WAY HOME THE RUMBLING NOISE WAS STILL OCCURING. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP GOT THE SEVICE MANAGER TO GO FOR A RIDE WITH ME SO HE COULD HERE THE NOISE BECAUSE NO ONE AT THE DEALERSHIP EVER TOOK THE CAR OUT TO HEAR THE NOISE. HE SAID THEY WOULD HAVE TO KEEP IT AGAIN TO SEE IF THEY COULD FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. THEY CALLED ME 2 DAYS LATER AND TOLD ME THAT A CRACK IN THE HOSE THAT RUNS THROUGH THE RADIATOR TO THE TRANSMISSION WAS ALLOWING ANTIFREEZE TO GET INTO THE TRANSMISSION AND THE TRANSMISSION WAS CAUSING THE RUMBLING NOISE. THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO HAVE THE READIATOR AND TRANSMISSION REPLACED AND IT WAS GOING TO COST ME $4200.00. NEEDLESS TO SAY I WAS NOT CONVINCED THEY KNEW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR SINCE THEY WERE WRONG THE FIRST TWO TIMES, SO I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP AND HAD THEM LOOK AT IT. THEY SAID IT WAS THE RADIATOR AND TRANSMISSION SO I HAD THEM REPLACE BOTH AT A COST OF $3900.00. *TR
I FILLED MY GAS TANK WHEN IT WAS AT 1/2 FULL FOR A TRIP OUT OF TOWN. I GOT ABOUT 1 MILE FROM THE GAS STATION AND MY SES LIGHT CAME ON AND I NOTICED MY FUEL GAUGE STILL READ 1/2. I PULLED OVER BECAUSE I THOUGHT I WOULD CHECK MY GAS CAP TO SEE IF THAT WAS WHAT MADE THE LIGHT COME ON. IT TOOK APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES FOR THE GAS GAUGE TO FINALLY REACH FULL WITH MY LIGHT STILL ON. THE LIGHT REMAINED ON UNTIL MY GAS WENT BACK DOWN TO 1/2 TANK. I FILLED MY TANK AGAIN TONIGHT (12-1-09) BECAUSE IT WAS AT 1/4 OF A TANK LEFT. AGAIN, MY GAUGE STILL READ THE SAME AS BEFORE I FILLED THE TANK AND I AM ASSUMING THE LIGHT WILL COME BACK ON WHEN I DRIVE IT AGAIN. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND IT IS A RECURRING PROBLEM THAT IS LEFT FOR THE VEHICLE OWNER TO PAY FOR EVEN THOUGH IT IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURE PROBLEM. MANY OWNERS, INCLUDING MYSELF, WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER NISSAN VEHICLE. *TR
I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN X-TERRA AND THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAS BURNED UP. THIS ISSUE HAS ACTUALLY BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT A YEAR. I HAD TO TAKE THE CAR IN BECAUSE I WAS HAVING A TRANSMISSION ISSUE AND THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP DID NOT THINK IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. THE SERVICE MANAGER RODE IN THE BACK AND THOUGHT IT TO BE THE WHEEL BEARINGS. THEY SWITCHED THAT OUT BUT IT DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE. LONG STORY SHORT AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME IT ENDED UP BEING AN ISSUE WITH THE TRANSMISSION WHICH WAS REPLACED BUT EVER SINCE I GOT THE VEHICLE BACK IN 1/09 IS HAD THE WHISTLING NOISE WHEN GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT HIGHER SPEEDS AND WHEN YOU LET OFF THE GAS IT WHISTLES. BOTTOM LINE IS THERE WAS AN ISSUE IN JANUARY 2009 WITH THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL AND IT WAS BLOWN OFF BY THE DEALERSHIP AND NOW IT HAS BLOWN AND NISSAN WILL NOT STAND BEHIND IT. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER NISSAN. MINE HAS HAD 2 TRANSMISSIONS REPLACED AND NOW THIS ALL WITHIN A YEAR. REAR-ENDS SHOULD NOT GO OUT THIS EASILY. *TR
SUMMARY: 2005 NISSAN XTERRA FUEL GAUGE READING EMPTY WHEN FULL AND SLOWLY RISING BACK TO THE CORRECT DISPLAY LEVEL THEN DROPPING TO MID-LEVEL DISPLAYING INCORRECTLY. SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON SOMETIMES TURNING OFF AND ON AT ODD TIMES. THIS EVENT HAPPENS EVERYDAY AND I HAVE NOW RELIED ON THE TRIPOMETER TO TELL MY FUEL LEVEL. PRIOR EVENTS LEADING TO MALFUNCTION: I WAS DRIVING ON A 9 HOUR LONG TRIP DURING WINTER. I WAS ABOUT 4 HOURS INTO THE TRIP AND MY FUEL GAUGE ODDLY DROPPED TO EMPTY SO I FILLED UP BUT NO CHANGE OCCURRED. ON THE WAY UP IT STARTED TO WORK AGAIN SO I FIGURED IT WAS A FLUKE AND TRUSTED THE GAUGE. MY CAR STALLED ABOUT 8 HOURS IN AND I HAD TO WAIT IN THE COLD FOR 2 HOURS FOR AAA. REPAIRS MADE: NO REPAIRS WERE MADE BUT I HAVE LOOKED FOR QUOTES ON THE REPAIR AND I KEEP GETTING DIFFERENT ANSWERS TO THE PROBLEM. ONE SAID THE FUEL GAUGE SENSOR NEEDS TO BE RESET (200 DOLLAR FEE) AND ANOTHER SAID THE FUEL PUMPS NEED TO BE REPLACED (700 DOLLAR FEE). SIMILARITIES TO COMMON RECALL: THE ISSUE I HAVE IS SO COMMON TO THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V075000 RECALL. THIS RECALL IS ON THE 2006 AND 2008 NISSAN XTERRA, FRONTIER, AND PATHFINDER. IT INVOLVES: THE MOLDED FUEL TANK SHELLS CAN DEFORM, CAUSING THE FUEL SENDER FLOAT ARM TO CONTACT AN EMBOSSMENT MOLDED INTO THE TANK SHELL CAUSING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FUEL GAUGE TO SHOW THAT THE VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY ONE QUARTER TANK WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS EMPTY. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT WE 2005 XTERRA OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE, AND ONLINE THAT IS THE CONSENSUS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND WORK RESOLVING THIS ISSUE. *TR
GAS GAUGE- GAS LEVEL IS NEAR 1/4 OF TANK. VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF FOR A FEW HOURS AND WHEN TURNED BACK ON GAS LEVEL READS EMPTY. THE GAUGE DOES NOT MOVE FROM EMPTY POSITION AND DOES NOT REGISTER ANY GAS IN THE VEHICLE. AT TIMES WHEN THIS OCCURS AND I HAVE PLACED GAS IN THE VEHICLE THE GAS GAUGE STILL WILL NOT MOVE FROM A STUCK POSITION. I HAVE NOT REPLACED OR REPAIRED GAUGE ALTHOUGH I AM STILL UNDER WARRANTY, I FEEL THAT THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. THANK YOU *TW
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY RAN OUT OF FUEL. THE CONTACT CALLED AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE FUEL SENSOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT A PART OF ANY RECALLS, SHE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY REPAIR EXPENSES. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 63,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL SENSOR IN THE FUEL TANK FAILED WHICH ALSO AFFECTS THE FUEL GAUGE. THE FUEL GAUGE MAY INDICATE THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS FULL; HOWEVER, IT COULD ACTUALLY BE EMPTY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND THEY INFORMED HER THAT THE FUEL SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPAIR COST WAS $700 AND THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR RELATED WARRANTIES FOR HER MODEL YEAR VEHICLE. THE NISSAN MANUFACTURER WAS CALLED AND INFORMED HER THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56,000.
I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN XTERRA. APPROX. 2 WEEKS AGO I WENT TO FILL UP THE TANK AND THE GAS GAUGE DID NOT MOVE, AND THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD NOT HAD ANY INDICATION OF A PROBLEM UP UNTIL THAT DAY. I WENT TO THE DEALER WHO SAID IS WAS SOME FUEL SENSOR THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED THAT WOULD BE 400.00 TO FIX (WHICH I PRICED I A DIFFERENT REPAIR SHOP AND IT WAS ~ 30 DOLLARS CHEAPER). I DECLINED TO GET IT FIXED RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY. THE SYMPTOMS ARE CONSISTENT WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FUEL GAUGE SENSOR FAILURE IN NISSAN MODELS NAMED IN THE CURRENT RECALL. *TR

THE CONSEQUENCES, I NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN MY TANK. AS A MATTER OF FACT. I RAN OUT OF GAS SUDDENLY IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH SOMEONE HELPED ME GET FUEL. I HAD THE CAR LOOKED AT BY MY MECHANIC AND HE SAID THAT THERE WAS A DEFECT IN THE FUEL SENSOR LINE WHICH DOESN'T REGISTER THE AMOUNT OF GAS BEING USED.
