NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Iost steering function while driving.
Currently there is an open and unresolved high pressure fuel pump recall that can leave me stranded on the highway and cause an accident. The length of time until a remedy can be had is unacceptable. Also there is a new recall to reprogram the ECU to "band-aid" a potential failure of the timing reluctor ring. It still has the potential to leave me broken down on the road and cause an accident. The delamination problem of the reluctor ring is another part that should be covered under a recall instead of a software program.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle hesitated. No warning lights were illuminated. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was unknown. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Noticeable engine noise experienced with my Ram 1500 Eco diesel. My local dealer diagnosed the noise to be coming from the high pressure fuel pump that there is an open recall on for over a year. Dealer cannot make repairs without the parts available. Looks to be they are now. Recall this is referenced too: 22V-406
While idling in line at a fuel station, my vehicle suddenly started shuddering and quickly followed up with a strange squeak that sounded like metal on metal contact from the lower portion of the engine. This happened on June 5th 2023 around noon timeframe. I was able to pull the vehicle into a parking spot where I turned the engine off and called for a tow truck. There were no visible lights or codes stored during this period. After getting the vehicle home, I removed the oil filter and discovered metal flakes throughout the filter and oil system. The vehicle has just under 70k miles on it and has been maintained regularly with quality lubricants and filters. Thankfully I was not on the highway with my family to include two children under the age of 5. Chrysler/Fiat has been aware of engine failure issues on this particular engine and continues to ignore the fact that their power plant is faulty and continues to put owners and bystanders at risk.
Repeated alert to service electronic braking system. Had code read it said right front wheel erratic response from wheel speed sensor. Had sensor changed no change to error code, now the traction control light and passenger seat airbag light has come on. This is a 2017 ram tradesmen with approximately 70k mileage
Truck has had issues with cranking but not starting consistently since owning. I have had it towed to multiple dealers who say they can not duplicate the issue. I take it home, drive it for a day or two and then it will crank and not start. I have paid multiple diagnosis fees, I have taken video of the issue and the dealer says they can't go by video they have to duplicate it. I have been stranded multiple times and can't rely on the truck starting when I need to drive it. The fuel pump has had a recall for a year now and dealer says they don't have parts to fix it. I am at a loss, there have been no warning light consistently, sometimes the engine light comes on when this happens and sometimes it does not. Dealer can't fix the fuel pump issue and I can't drive the truck without fear of being stranded and towed to dealer for them to say the same thing every time.
Cruise control sometimes don't work, sunroof leaking
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power but was able to continue to operate at slower speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed and found failures with the EGR and intake manifold. The contact stated that the vehicle had previously been repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V757000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000.
My truck has the Z46 manufacturer recall and the NHTS 22v-406 recall for "High Pressure Fuel Pump failure". No parts are available for repair. the recall states " A HPFP failure may introduce internally failed component debris into the fuel system potentially causing fuel starvation. Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of motive power, which can cause a vehicle to crash without prior warning." I pull my camper to remote parts of the country. my fuel pump, at time to time would make "noises" that had me concerned. I found a reputable Diesel repair shop that had a OEM part that would solve the recall. For reimbursment I needed 1)parts 2)Labor3)taxes4)related costs5)contact info. I submitted all this info to uscustomercare@cac.stellantis.com on June 5. June 7 I was denied due to "out of warranty" proved I was not. On June 7 I was denied because parts were not covered, I showed them that they were OEM. On June 12 I was again denied this time because they did not like the way the clerk wrote the repair order diagnosis. I told them the dignosis was Z46 NHTS22-v406. They refused compenstion and anymore appeal. I followed all the rules, repaired my truck so it would not be a significant road hazard to me or others and expect compensation of $2210.75. Please help me, and others get compensation for doing the right thing while Stellantis nad FCA "wait for parts"
While driving approximately 20mph my 2017 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel abruptly stopped/stalled on me for a second or two with no warning indications before or after. I was driving with my wife and two kids and am always very aware of driving cautiously and being aware of my surroundings. Fortunately, there were no vehicles behind us at the moment the truck stalled. The truck has not been inspected by the dealership but I have called my local Ram dealership to explain this to them and they informed me of a recall that I already knew about (22V-406). I've been placed on a list in the 80's for when the part arrive.
While driving the vehicle, the cruise control disengages, the traction control light comes on, and the ABS light comes on along with a warning bell dinging incessantly! It may stay like this for hundreds of miles or may be intermittent. Sometimes I can restart the vehicle and it will reset and sometimes it won’t. I haven’t been able to replicate it for the dealership…although it’s been occurring for over a year now. Driving conditions don’t seem to make any difference as a cause. Wet, dry, smooth, or bumpy roads…it’s all the same.
While driving power steering failure happens randomly at any speed or on turns. No indicator light shows on dashboard calling out an issue. I am concerned loss of power steering will cause an accident causing bodily harm or death.
While hard accelerating from a stop light and towing a moderately loaded trailer (~ 3,000 lbs), I felt the turbo engage and heard a loud bang and felt the rear end get wobbly. The truck pulled violently to the right and I instantly lost accelaration and heard something dragging on the concrete, I coasted into the left turn lane and got out to find my driveshaft had broke at the rear differential yoke and was resting on the ground, still attached to the transfer case. I hopped back in and put it in 4wd to power the front tires to limp to a safe location about 100 yards down the road. Upon closer inspection both upper control arm ends that attached to a frame via a bushing broke causing the differential to rotate to the point the rear u-joint yoke broke off the drive shaft. I called a dealer but the repair time was > 1month so I repaired it myself by replacing both control arms (with Moog aftermarket arms) and a new Mopar drive shaft. Upon closer inspection both control arm ends had poor weld quality (poor weld fusion) where the bushing loop attaches to the control arm shaft. They should not have failed given the normal driving and the low miles on the vehicle. This is definitely a manufacturers defect that could have caused a serious accident had the loss of control caused the vehicle to swerved into oncoming traffic. I still have the defective part if needed for closer inspection/testing. This incident was shared with FCA recalls but was not covered nor were they interested in the issue. I also have pictures on my phone that would upload properly but i could send in an email...

RAM ENGINE FAILURE May 7, 2023 SUBJECT: Engine failure RAM 2017 ECO Diesel TO: whom it may concern: Tuesday April 25, 2023 while driving to Riverside California with my wife, daughter and two grandchildren in my 2017 ECO diesel, it began to overheat leading to my engine oil pressure immediately dropping to zero. The loss in performance and lack of drivability forced me to hastily veer off highway 91, on to Adams Street/Auto Center Drive. I immediately pulled to the side of the road and shut off my truck’s engine. After the panic subsided I called Redlands Dodge Redland and was redirected to MOSS BROS. Riverside, California. The history regarding my purchase of RAM eco diesel: I’m a 100% disabled Vietnam Veteran who utilizes a service trained mobility dog. This was the primary reason for the purchase a RAM full size pickup truck that is licensed with military disability veteran plates and equipped with K-9 support equipment. See attached photos. I suffer from severe neural back injuries requiring both lower back and leg prosthesis. My service dog is the only way I’m able to be mobile and not bed ridden. My RAM truck is my chosen vehicle to allow me some resemblance of a normal life. At 73 year old, I depend on my RAM truck. Today I’m confronted with multiple recalls and premature engine failure on this truck which had been waiting for over a year to have corrections made to critical equipment defects which could result in fire, loss of vehicle control and possible vehicle crash endangering my life and the lives of my family. My RAM case number is GOOD-WILL # 86043416, The contact stated the first case appears to have gone unresolved and speaking with another specialist/mechanic from FCA would inspect my vehicle's engine and authorize it's repair/replacement.
I am reporting a persistent safety defect involving loss of intended drivability in my 2017 Ram 1500 with an 8-speed automatic transmission. For the past 3 years, on almost every use of the vehicle, the transmission enters an abnormal operating state where it becomes stuck in a single gear (most often 3rd or 4th) and will not upshift or downshift. When this occurs, the vehicle experiences reduced ability to accelerate and loss of normal drivability. The condition does not resolve while driving and requires me to pull over, shut the vehicle off, and restart it to restore operation. This defect has occurred multiple times at freeway speeds, requiring me to pull over onto the highway shoulder due to loss of vehicle function. A vehicle that cannot reliably shift or accelerate at highway speed presents a clear safety hazard to the driver and surrounding traffic. Requiring a stop-and-restart is not a safe or reasonable mitigation strategy in real-world traffic conditions. The issue occurs more frequently when the vehicle is cold, indicating a predictable and repeatable failure mode, not driver error or misuse. I have had to alter normal driving behavior, including extended warm-up periods and avoiding highways, to reduce risk. I was informed by repair facilities that this is a known issue related to transmission control module (TCM) software, and that Chrysler has issued Technical Service Bulletin(s) describing TCM software updates to address abnormal shifting and drivability behavior. The existence of these TSBs demonstrates manufacturer knowledge of the failure mode and a defined corrective action, yet the issue has not been addressed as a safety recall. I am submitting this complaint so the issue can be evaluated based on objective safety criteria. A vehicle that routinely loses drivability and requires emergency stops on freeways warrants formal safety investigation.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the vehicle made an abnormal sound. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure recurred when starting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the head of the exhaust manifold bolt was fractured on both sides, causing hot fuel to leak onto the engine. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
This is my second Ram truck with this issue. My first truck was a 2014 1500 Big Horn and now I own a 2017 1500 Sport. The 2014 was in the shop 3 times for a manifold bolt breakage and the 2017 has been in the shop 2 times now for a manifold bolt break. This issue causes an annoying engine ticking sound that gets louder over time and causes a serious health risk to the passengers of the vehicle. Even the newly designed bolts that Mopar has been using still break. This has been ongoing for many years with the Hemi engines and should have a repair that will not fail by now.
When we bought the truck we drove to Virginia beach, va. The cruise control was locked on at 72mph and had to turn truck off to keep from rear ending many vehicles stopped on Interstate. Brake failure has almost caused wreck 5 or 6 times. I did have accident in June. I don't drive it anymore have a 38,000 vehicle we cant drive because brakes fail. Two different occasions the wheel on drivers side has broke lugs and wheel came off once and second time I heard noise and parked it. I had 1 lug left that time. As we lost my mom and sister in wrong way crash this has brought unnecessary stress and emotional distress. So we have no vehicle and out of 38,000. The contact wants to add the Hemi tick defect as well.
The minute the gas hand gets below Full the gas hand goes to Empty and then goes back to Full over and over while driving On the dash it flashes “Fuel Level Sensor Failure” and it will do this til I fill the tank full. It shows recall letters to be mail in August 2023 can I get a copy of the letter please
I know this is the fuel pump. No prior indications or lights. Stopped on highway. Able to move over and restart vehicle when light came on and vehicle stalled. Did this twice while getting to house out of state. Paid for the repair $16K after I argued sit was part of the recall. I was told not my year. Picked up the truck and drove about 10 miles when it did the exact same thing. I was lucky and was able to pull into a parking lot. I have tried to argue that the original failure was the recall and questioned why a recall part was placed back into the vehicle. I am without a vehicle with no repair in sight. There are two dates 04/06/2023 and 05:12/2023
Dodge has failed to recognize an issue that is extremely prevelant in Americas Number one selling truck. The 2015-2020 models are all experiencing exhaust Manifold deformities/ Warpage that are causing the manifold bolts to snap at the engine resulting in the vehicle spewing untreated exhaust fumes both into the environment as well as the passenger compartment. They have redesigned the components but have not issued a recall. This is both an environmental issue as well as a health issue for the drivers. This is the number 1 selling truck in America so I cant imagine how much unfiltered exhaust is entering our environment from these vehicles. A simple google search of 5.7 hemi exhaust leak will show you how prevalent this issue is. Dodge's redesign of the manifolds is a clear indication that they admit the issue was a design flaw. It is both seriously detrimental to the environment as well as the passengers.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while her husband was driving at various speeds, the vehicle would jerk and hesitate upon depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they were informed that the vehicle could not be seen for a few weeks. The contact's husband drove the vehicle home and called the dealer the next day; he was instructed to bring in the vehicle for an inspection. While driving to the dealer at 35 MPH, her husband noticed black smoke emitting from the hood of the vehicle. As her husband pulled over and opened the hood, flames began to engulf the engine. The fire department was called to the scene and extinguished the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was initially towed to an independent mechanic and later to an independent body shop where it remained in their possession. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000. Vin tool confirms parts not yet available.
Shortly after starting the engine it suddenly shut off. This has happened on three occasions, and each time I noticed the key fob was between the ON and ACC positions. I think the key fob sometimes returns too far after I release it from the start position. The first two times I had to turn it to the off position, remove the key fob, then restart the engine. This time nothing happened when I tried to restart the engine. I removed the key fob and opened and closed the driver door, then was able to restart the engine.
Unknown. We have owned this vehicle for almost 3 years now and we have had to replace 2 sensors, the cruise control will intermittently no disengage when buttons are pushed or brake pushed, replaced the full pump, sometimes it will lose all power going down the road, HD to replace the fuse box because it was getting and started to melt, it will try to start and will just keep cranking until you slam on the gas, and the rear window leaks every time it rains. We have paid for everything out of pocket and we are still having all these problems and the mechanics can not figure out the problem, but are guessing it the fuel pump or fuel injectors.
Air suspension issues at 50k miles my truck rides lop sided half the time. Some days it works fine other days the driver side is sitting lower than the passenger or the backs lower than the front it’s never the same issue. Sometimes it don’t work at all. Which is crazy with only 50k miles
The power steering turns off and on intermittently at random times, locations, and speeds, sometimes when your driving straight, sometimes when your turning. My assumption is it is a fault electronic stearing system. As this has been known to happen to similar models.
On the 5.7liter Hemi engines the exhaust manifold bolts break into the block of the engine causing exhaust leak which can potentially get in the cab and cause injury or death. As well the heat shield bolts that cover the exhaust manifold break.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering intermittently failed with the power steering warning symbol displayed on the instrument panel. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was instructed to take the vehicle to a dealer. The contact was informed that the manufacturer would reimburse for any repairs to the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed with a defective rack and pinion; however, there were no recalls on the vehicle. The contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the crankshaft sensor and the ECU were replaced. Additionally, the dealer informed the contact that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 135,000.
My family has been exhibiting symptoms of asthma for several years. Recently, while cleaning out my truck I came across a massive mold growth under the backseat of my Ram 1500 which i believe has been the cause of these health issues all along. I've included multiple photos showing the extent of the growth. It appears that water has been running down the rear truck pillars and soaking the interior carpeting/fabric under/behind the rear seat. There are numerous well documented examples of water leak issues in Ram trucks equipped with a sunroof and third brake lights which I believe to be the cause of the mold resulting in my family's asthma related issues. I have previously taken my truck into the dealer for water leak concerns (I had noticed wetness on the front window pillars after a heavy rain). It was recommended at that time that I check/blow out the sunroof drains and not to park the truck on any incline (this is ridiculous). I blew air through the drains (they were perfectly clear with no blockage). I didn't notice further wetness on the front pillars so I didn't pursue the issue again until now. The nature of these water leaks makes them very difficult to detect and poses a serious health risk as the extensive mold growth would not normally be noticeable. Ram should be required to recall trucks with these issues to fix the leaks and provide adequate water management (e.g. properly designed drip tray with water drainage outside of the cabin) in case of future leaks to prevent this safety issue.
Ram 5.7 hemi engine exhaust manifold leak ticking sound if it’s not fix or the bolt snap the smoke coming from the exhaust can be suck on the vent and can have a carbon monoxide poisoning inside the truck please I just found out that it’sbeen a known problem for dodge ram trucks and nothing is being done by the company to recall or fix such problem than you
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 MPH down the driveway, the tailgate door released independently, causing damage to the trailer that was being hauled. The contact stated that the door latch released independently several times while driving. There was no warning prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and notified the contact that the repair would be an out-of-pocket expense. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the steering wheel was firm. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic and the dealer; however, the cause of the failure was not found. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
RE: FCA Recall #Z46; NHTSA #22V-406 Premature High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) failure recall. It's been approximately 14 months since FCA issued its notice for a voluntary safety recall on inspection/replacement of the HPFP for my vehicle and no action has been taken by the manufacturer as of this date. The dealership still indicates that no repair parts are available.
The contact owns a 2017 RAM 1500. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the check engine, ABS, and the traction control warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the ABS module had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired, and the contact was advised to contact a dealer for repairs. An unknown dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the parts were on backorder. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
During the rainstorms here in sacramento California water was coming inside the truck. At the dealer it was diagnosed with the 3rd brake light and flapper vents needed replacement that was the cause of water leaks. water was entering on the back cabin and baseboards were flooded. It’s a safety hazard because mold started forming real bad. We didn’t catch it right away.
I ran off the road down an embankment causing a frontend collision, and the airbags did not go off. The passenger seatbelt did not restrain the front passenger causing injuries
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System/Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
When the temperature dropped below -10F last Thursday, the front air suspension dropped to the bump stops and remained there until the temperature rose to above 32 degreesF. This made the truck unable to steer completely to the right or left, greatly lengthening the time and distance required to make a turn, lane change, etc. In effect, the vehicle is unsafe to drive under those conditions. No error code was generated during this length of time.
Electric assist steering failure, truck is getting hard to steer either direction. Air ride system is bouncing like having no suspension at all, went into dealer and they report that the compressor, control board and manifold all need to be replaced. Vehicle only has 68,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph the vehicle T-Boned crashed into the passenger side of a school bus. During the crash the front end of the vehicle was severely damaged and the vehicle was destroyed but the air bags did not deploy. The driver sustained a concussion, bruised left side ribs and torso which required medical treatment. One passenger from the school bus was also injured and required medical treatment but no further information was available. The vehicle was towed away. A police report was taken at the scene. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the incident. The failure mileage was 100,000.
While parking my truck, it had an unintended acceleration and my foot was not on the gas peddle. I was going about 1-2mph and the truck picked up speed unexpectedly and collided with my garage wall. I am unsure what component malfunctioned and it has not yet been inspected. Myself and my baby were in the car and luckily I was able to stop by hitting the brakes and putting the car in park. It continued to pull forward even with my foot on the brake. There was no warning or codes prior to or after the incident.
I was filling antifreeze up every couple days then about 2 weeks later I was driving it just shut down, now won't start brought it to a garage said the engine locked up I see there's a recall, but it says not on this one, and it won't start the truck only has 64,000 miles on it.
I just purchased my truck in November 2022 and noticed an audible ticking noise coming from the engine immediately after start-up. After having the vehicle inspected by an ASE mechanic, it was discovered that the manifold bolts had broken on each warped manifold which was likely causing the ticking sound. Because of the defective manifold bolts, this exhaust leak created a dangerous situation while the Hemi engine was running and possibly resulted in a failed emissions test required to obtain a license plate in metro Atlanta, GA.
Driving on Highway and the power steering Gear Failed causing the vehicle not being able to turn and the front wheels locked up. This is a known issue and should be a Safety Recall. Dealership mentioned this is a common problem.
