Engine started making a ticking sound approximately around Oct 15th 2023 Called ram cares because my 2008 chrysler aspen with 180k on the same 5.7 liter engine had the same sound and a private shop replaced. Lifters. Started escalation case number [XXX] on October 25th 2023. 2017 ram went to Larry Miller dealership, Boise, ID on Oct 30, 2023. Eric service manager says technician diagnosis was warped exhaust manifold and loose bolts. This is coming with the 5.7l hemi and they have replaced over 20 this year alone and with miles as low as 30,000 miles. These parts are defective and should be recalled before it starts a fire INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The electronic power steering (EPS) failed 8 months ago. It started with intermittent failure while driving. Complete failure occurred within 1 week of the problem starting making steering very difficult. I had God's Speed Automotive in Colorado City, Texas look at it and the rack and pinion require replacement. There are no recalls on this model but there are many recalls with similar models.
Engine shutoff instantly while traveling at approximately 50MPH on a highway. We were able to coast to the shoulder. There was no warning, the engine just shut off instantly while driving. It would not restart and we could not even shift out of park to move the truck off the highway shoulder. Truck was towed to my home at my expense and is not movable due to this issue.
Tried to leave and the service power steering light came on and there was no power steering. We shut the truck off and started it again and the light went off and we had power steering again. This has happened on and off a few times which is consistent with the recall we were informed of. We brought our truck to the local repair shop and they told us that there is a recall for this very issue (see attached copy from them). We then contacted the Dodge dealership we purchased the truck from and was told that this is VIN number specific and that our VIN number was not included in this recall, however the recall is occurring with vehicles made between 2013-2019 and ours is a 2017. We also contacted Chrysler who told us the same thing.

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle intermittently experienced a loss of power steering assist. The check power steering message was displayed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
My power steering intermittently locks while driving, particularly in the process of a turn. It is just a momentary lock, but it does interfere with the turning process. One time it locked and stayed locked. I shut the vehicle down and restarted, and it would not come back, had to sit for about 15 minutes, no accident as of yet. The dealership states I will have to replace the whole front end (both racks) steering system. My vehicle is a 2017 RAM with 48,000 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel) and NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V411000 (Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the parts to do the repairs were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated while driving at approximately 75 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the "engine" symbol illuminated, and the vehicle was able to coast to the side of the road. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle after numerous attempts and had the vehicle towed to a dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the High-Pressure Fuel Pump had failed, but the dealer did not have the parts available to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000. Parts distribution disconnect.
While driving home from school with my wife and kids, my vehicle died in the highway at about 55 mph. I almost got rear ended by the vehicle behind me. I was lucky to roll it out to the side of the road without getting in a accident. Had the vehicle towed to a mechanic shop and was informed that the cp4 pump had failed and the whole fuel system was contaminated. I bough the truck 8 months ago, and still owe over 25 thousand dollars on it. This is my daily driver. I can’t afford paying for a broken vehicle. Had to borrow a car from family temporarily to use for everything. I don’t know where to get help with this case. Please help.
The exhaust manifold bolts broke on my truck. There was a recall for this, but my VIN wasn’t included. However it’s the same problem as the recall
As many have mentioned already. I have had to have the passenger side exhaust manifold bolts replaced along with manifold due to heat warpage. Now at 88k the ticking from exhaust leak has returned. The same bolts have broken and dealer is now telling me that I have to replace the head due to the bolt not being able to be extracted. I feel as if the customer shouldn't be responsible for this known issue after purchasing an 60K truck at the time in 2017. 2 issue all with less than 90K and truck is not abused.
On a irregular basis, would get warning messages and dash warning lights about " Service Anti-lock Brake system" , and " Service Electronic Brake System", and vehicle would start to immediately lose power and in some locations, would be on an open highway at highway speeds. Would have to pull off road to try and cycle truck off and on to regain operation. Getting rear-ended on the highway is NOT an option due to a faulty module or braking system...!! NO pre warning lights or symtpons, it just happens.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle intermittently experienced a loss of power steering assist. The "Service Power Steering" message was displayed. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: RQ23003 (Steering). The failure mileage was approximately 55,500. The VIN was invalid.
Mount for gas tank strap rotted and front fuel tank strap came off leaving fuel tank hang down. Luckily did not fall out of truck. This issue has had recalls on other model years but not 2017 which was a carryover model year so don’t understand why not. Could have been a very dangerous issue. Also a very expensive repair. I have never seen an issue with fuel tank falling out of vehicles that are not very old. This truck has only 60,400 miles also.
The exhaust manifold bolts broke letting exhaust gases escape think that is dangerous
Me and my girlfriend were driving down a 2 lane highway and my ram 1500 suddenly lost power steering ability and spun out of control because the steering was very hard to steer at 55 mph. Lucky I was able to start the truck back up and slowly try to drive to a pullout with no steering help.. My girlfriend and I were very scared but grateful that our lives spared. Prior to this incident there were no warnings or signs of electronic power steering failure. After pulling away from the road shoulder we were able to drive slowly home as we we’re about a mile from home warming lights on the instrument cluster and chiming “Service Power Steering!” The truck is out of warranty so I could not afford to have the dealership repair the power steering problem.
Was driving slow on a county highway following a tractor. Got got a service message for electronic throttle system, followed by the check engine light, then a service message for def system see dealer. I then noticed smoke coming out of my vents and the truck started on fire.

Driving approx. 45 mph when truck lost acceleration. Truck began making clanking sound and check engine light came on and electronic throttle control light. Almost got into an accident due to someone almost rear ending me and then had to coast into a parking lot when I lost total control of all steering and almost hit a parked car. Truck would not restart, had to call for a tow back home that was 150+ miles because no dealerships close by would accept vehicle or had availability. Truck taken to local Dodge dealership and diagnosed with high pressure fuel pump failure and the eta for parts for a fix are unknown at the time. Have been without a truck or car for 2 weeks now, have 4 kids and both me and my wife work full time and now only have 1 car to get around in because the truck had to be diagnosed first before a rental could be granted, if they even give me one. Still waiting to hear back about getting a rental and been 2 weeks without a truck.
Part# 68295368AC ABS control module failed about 3 months ago. Took to dealership to repair and they said no eta on when part will arrive and that there is a national shortage on the part and 100's of these are waiting to come in for repairs. Contact Dodge/Ram and basically told the same thing. Was told to just be careful and when part is available (no estimated ETA), they would let me know. This is same components being used in new vehicles currently being built but RAM is okay with "just being careful" on not having a government mandated safety feature since 2011. I offered to go and get the part on my own and no response to that option either. Ram knows this is a safety issue and is burying their head in the sand. My family safety and safety of others on the road is important to me. This lets just use them to build new vehicles and let's not worry about the safety of the public worries me.
While driving, my Ram Power Steering completely failed. I brought to the dealership and they advised there is an internal failure of the power steering rack. I found out of an ongoing investigation by the NHTSA for this issue and wanted to make sure my VIN was included if a recall was initiated.
The contact's son owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated while her son was driving 55 MPH, a message advising to stop driving because the vehicle would shut down was displayed. Additionally, the vehicle started losing motive power. The contact' son was able to veer to the side of the roadway. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the residence. The contact stated that the failure had occurred several times while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V406000 (Fuel System, Diesel). The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that she would be notified once the parts became available. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
The fuel pump quit working, which immediately made the engine die. I was on a two lane road and there was no place to get off the road. There was no prior warning of the issue and there apparently have been no recalls, even though, Ram is very aware of the problem and and in some cases the engines have been damaged due to pieces of metal from the fuel pump getting into the engine. I know of other people who have had the same issue with gas powered Ram trucks and there is a lot of information on the internet. In addition to the safety issues that this creates, I had to pay to a portion of the cost to replace the pump. Part of the expense was covered by an extended warrantee. The truck only had about 47,000 miles on it when the pump failed and apparently that is about average for the failure. Ram should have to recall these units and foot the expense to avoid having dead vehicles in traffic lanes
I have a 2017 Ram 1500 V6 3.6L (VIN [XXX] ) . When I used my parking break I have noticed that there are certain issue with the steering (hard to steer) and also that the parking brake cable hanging loose. When I checked the e-brake the cable is hanging down under the truck. It looks like parking brake is engaged and stuck and doesn't provide enough tension to the cable (doesn't retract). However, I have also noticed when going at around 65 mph that there the wheel is shaking like e-brake is engaged, and it is also hard to steer. Clogged particulate filter and catalytic converter No safety issue has been confirmed by a Ram dealer The vehicle has been inspected by the Ram dealer Engine light came on Dealer says the vehicle has to be driven a good distance to clean up the exhaust We only use the truck for short distances.
There was a loud ticking noise coming from the engine. Upon taking it to a service center is was diagnosed that 2 bolts from the passenger side exhaust manifold were sheared off due to the heat wrapping of the manifold. This happened a year before on the driver side which had 2 bolts as well sheared off from heat warping on the manifold. This is a common issue with most rams and should be a recall for faulty heat treated manifolds.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 1500. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at undisclosed speeds, the steering wheel became very difficult to maneuver. The service power steering warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that after turning off and restarting the vehicle, the steering wheel operated as designed; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. An undisclosed dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
Power steering failed driving straight down a road. This seems to be a very common and costly problem (dealership quoted $4,000). If this happens while trying to make a turn it is a guaranteed accident considering the strength it requires to turn the vehicle. This seems to be a known issue and in most cases, occurs around 60,000-80,000 miles which seems WAY too soon for this kind of issue. Dealership is also charging nearly $1,000 more for the part than the part is available to the public (direct from Mopar).
I have problems when my truck is shifting from park to reverse. There is a jerk that happens when I put the truck in reverse. Sometimes when I put the truck in reverse a prompt on the dash says the vehicle must be in park and the R on the 8 speed dial blinks. When I’m on flat pavement and I shift from P to R I feel no jerk. The truck shift perfectly when driving. I also noticed when the vehicle had been sitting for a while and when I go from P to D and start driving I get a hard jerk. I took it to the dealer they reset the Transmission and the problem still exist. I was told that I have to replace the transmission.
When backing my 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 out of a stall, I suddenly lost power steering. As I tried to crank my wheels straight the issue became worse. The issue persisted until I reached a certain MPH and then returned to normal. The next day the issue was back from the moment I turned the truck on. I have researched extensively and have found recalls for this exact issue on all surrounding years of the 2017 Ram, but the dealership tells me my year is not included in this recall, which seems very odd to me. The recall listed on the website describes my issue exactly, so I am unsure why the recall wouldn't include the 2017 model. It seems that Dodge is opening themselves up to a major potential law suit. I fear that it will go out while driving at higher speeds and will cause control loss of the vehicle.
Power steering just stopped working one day when truck was started.
The contact owned a 2017 RAM 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the vehicle suddenly fishtailed, causing the contact to briefly lose control. As a result, the vehicle collided head-on with a concrete barrier. No other vehicles were involved in the collision. No warning lights were illuminated. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. The contact was transported to an area hospital and treated for various bruising and a concussion. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and later deemed a total loss. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 102,192.

1-ABS PUMP MOTOR CONTROL- GENERAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE anti-lock brake code C0020-01 came on at 44185 miles. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they are telling me that The ABS unit needs to be replaced and that it is not covered under the warranty. this repair is going to cost me between $1200 and $2000. 2- At @ 30000 miles the FUEL INDICATOR LEVEL UNIT located inside the fuel tank went bad, showing that the tank was empty when the fuel tank was full. That part for the repair cost me $275 just for the part plus the installment pay. This vehicle is driven very little for All of these problems to be present. I think Dodge /Ram should stand behind their products and do the right thing and honor these repairs. Thank you.
Both exhaust manifolds cracked around 55k miles to include pins. Causes exhaust to leak into the cab.
Vehicle sat for approximately 30 days. Upon starting to drive the steering was very stiff and jerky when turning. Felt like there was no power steering only manual. Extremely difficult to turn. Drove vehicle several times and tried to loosen it by rapidly turning wheel right and left at slow speeds. No improvement. Researched recalls and found multiple recalls for same issue for years other than mine. Called the dealer and Chrysler Customer Care and was told nothing they could do, VIN is not on there lists. Since there have been other year versions with the same issue I feel that the 2017 RAM 1500 should be added to a recall list.

While moving across a parking lot to the back row, my truck suddenly and without warning sharply turned left. This sharp turned was not initiated by me. The turn resulted in a severe impact with a light pole concrete base, causing severe damage to the left front bumper and fender. Also caused damage to the interior steering column. Luckily no other person or vehicle was involved, and I was not injured in this event. The front wheels were lock in extreme left position. Due to the severe damage, my truck had to be towed. The tow truck driver stated that the steering was also locked. The truck has since been deemed irreparable by the insurance company. My son made me aware that there have been 59 similar issues reported with the steering of the 2017 Ram 1500.
Towed travel trailer to Yellowstone. While travelling along road south of Yellowstone near Jackson, Wyoming, I completely lost power steering. Warnings on dash to not stop driving vehicle. Fought with steering in traffic, nearly crossing into oncoming traffic. Made it to visitor centre in Jackson. Had to get towed to Rexburg, Idaho. Diagnostic was critical and total failure of electronic power steering. Part $2600. 3 weeks away. Broke CV axles driving without power steering. Had to rent 3/4 ton in Idaho Falls to get our family and trailer back to Canada. Now fixed. $6000 poorer. Had to drive back 700 miles to Idaho to pick up truck.
How did NHTSA miss this one? Engine exhaust manifold bolts broken leading to exhaust gases unknowingly getting into the cabin while driving which has also may be impacting my lungs. (I have a CT scan from MAYO to prove it.) This went on for at least 3 months. During long, 2 hours trips with the windows closed led to drowsiness. The problem was not only confirmed by the local Ram dealer but also confirmed this is a problem for all Ram vehicles using the 5.8 liter engine. These exhaust manifold bolts and gaskets should be replaced after so many miles or time. I had 95,000 miles on my truck when I brought it in for a tuneup. The service department then found the problem during their overall inspection. Frankly, ALL service departments should be doing the overall inspection first BEFORE any other scheduled maintenence. The only symptom was ticking on startup for about 10 seconds. Just search on youtube: Ram 5.8 liter engine ticking on startup OR replacing exhaust bolts. Youtube is FILLED with how to videos. The mechanic also stated this has been going on for years.
I can not find specific tow rating for my truck. The sticker on the door only gives payload. “Towing and Payload” in the owner’s manual has no figures - it only lists 3 websites that either redirect or are broken links. Furthermore, creating a Mopar account and linking my VIN says the following - “ Sorry, your towing and payload information is not available. Please check your owner's manual for towing and payload details.” This puts me in an infinite loop and I have no way of knowing what my specific vehicle is safely rated to tow.
While driving down the road at 55mph in my 2017 Ram 1500 express I was rounding a corner when my steering locked up. I lost power steering and I could barely get my steering wheel to turn. While applying excessive force to turn my steering wheel, the locked steering freed up and nearly sent me off the road. I stopped to gain my composure and noticed when the vehicle was in park, the steering wheel turned fine. While at highway speed the steering gets very stiff and will lock up from time to time. I took the truck to the local Ram dealership for diagnosis and they confirmed the steering rack is faulty. The technician who road tested the vehicle could not replicate the issue, although it was intermittent. In the time leading up to my appointment for service the steering continued to worsen. I could not drive my truck with my infant daughter for fear of a steering failure. There were no messages, warning lights, or associated diagnostic codes associated with the steering issue. The truck is currently at the dealership getting a new steering rack.
