NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
- I like to report that my Ram 1500 Classic has been having issues with steering since March 2025. I had around at that time 78k miles on the truck give or take. I took the truck to the dealership where I purchased it (Brown Daub Easton PA). They claimed that everything I told them about the Truck was perfectly fine and they had multiple people test drive the truck with no issues. I explained that the steering would be very hard to execute a turn left or right and at times it would even feel like it "skipped" in the steering. I can tell I have slightly new wheels at the time of this issue. The only thing they noted was my rear passenger tire tread was a little more worn compared to the other three. I took the Truck home very disappointed and the problem actually seem like it went away for a few days. Then the problem began to show again and the turning aspect is becoming more difficult. Recently while driving on the interstate my steering was affected just changing lanes at 65 mph where the need to use both hands was troublesome. The truck itself had jolt where I never encountered. - - I believe that driving this truck is very dangerous and taken it to the dealership where I have a warranty appears to be impossible to identify the root issue. - I have only taken it to the dealership once and its scheduled to go back to the home dealership on the 12th of this month for another check. -There are no warning lamps/messages. Problem recently started in March 2025 at or above 78k miles. - I believe that the issue could be related to the power steering motor or the Electronic power steering noted on this site. The examples or causes fall very close to the same feeling I get while driving this vehicle. This is my first experience where I have noticed a loss of power steering in driving 28 years of driving various pick up trucks be my own, military grade trucks, and work trucks. Thank you.
Tailgate falling down on its own can barely open it when it's in the closed position. looked it up on recall with a VIN number and it is listed as a zb8 recall. Bought the truck late in 2019 and I've had many issues opening the tailgate since I bought it. Recently tailgate randomly open doing 50 mph in garbage whenever
The WiFi works on my truck but I have never set up an account or purchased it. I bought Ram 1500 new in 2018 (2019 truck though) and have owned it the entire time. I have called At&t multiple times and even went into one of their stores, they have run my vin, the IMEI # and the ICCID number and can find nothing on their end and say there is not an account. Yet, it is connecting to the At&t network. I have run speed tests that prove this and connected with both my phone and laptop. I took it into the dealership and they could not help either, just stated that is is weird. At&t has forwarded me to multiple people including stellantis, siruis gaurdian, and ram connect all of whom could not help. There are some other things going on with other devices that make me believe someone who had access to the truck may have done something and is using this to track me or access other data.
Engine failure after fuel pump recall replacement(37,500 miles). My fuel pump had a mandatory recall. I drove my truck in and everything was running perfect. I drove the truck less than 100 miles after the fuel pump replacement recal and it started to make nocking sounds and the gas was lagging , not accelerating normal. The gears were not shifting normal but rather jerking in and out of gears at different RPM's. I was on the highway in CA and I was scared that I was gonna hit someone or be hit myself from the gas lag and jerky shifting. I drove back into the dealership again 100 miles after the fuel pump replacement. I was charged $288 dollars for them to tell me I needed a new engine. No engine lights or warnings. Now 100 miles after the fuel pump replacement and 2 months out of warranty they wanted $22,000 to replace my engine. They said they would do me a favor and replace it for $4300 since I was 2 months and 1500 miles past my warranty. Now I'm left without a truck 100 miles after the fuel pump replacement. I couldn't afford a rental car and they didn't have any for me to rent at the dealership. I was soon fired from my job as I was scrambling to find $4300 just laying around. Now I don't have a job and $4300 plus $288 in debt on my credit card at 22% interest. These same fuel pumps have already had class action lawsuits on them for earlier models. Metal shavings were being produced within the fuel system. The other problem being reported was over heating from the connector rod to the crankshaft. The connection was overheating and causing bearings at the connection to fail. Once that happens 1 or more cylinders stop pumping correctly and the engine blows. So there are 2 possibilities for this engine failure. I am certain that my car was damaged by 1 or both of these poor engineering mistakes. They could have hurt or killed someone and they are hiding the real problem until they get caught.
Lifter ticking in 3.6l pentastar
Every time I fill up with gas, the pump stops every $2 or I put in. It gurgles and acts like the tank is full. This happens EVERY SINGLE TIME I FILL UP. TAKE ME 20 min to get gas.
The contact owns a 2019 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65-70 MPH, the vehicle vibrated, and the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the heat from the engine had melted a wire inside the engine. The repair was pending. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 94,500.
electric controller is failing causing the power system to fail
Ive had the truck for 3 months and airbag light came on. Had it diagnosed to find it has a bad sensor in the seatbelt pretensioner that is stopping the passenger airbag from deploying and the seatbelt from locking. This is a major problem and should be a recall as I had it fixed and paid almost $600 to have replaced. I've called Stelantis and they offer no help as if it becomes a recall in the future they will possibly reimburse me they say.
Driving to work my windshield filled up with steam to where I couldn’t see and needed to swerve and do an emergency stop. a smell of antifreeze filled the cab with a light haze, 60k miles so I began to do my research. There are countless forum postings about bad heater cores needing replacement. I am handy so I call my local dodge ram dealer and they tell me that there are over 3,400 heater cores on back order and they have no release date and that their shop is waiting on 7 of them. If someone experiences the issue I had today but in different circumstances it could turn catastrophically deadly
While driving I noticed a message that said “service electrical brake system. I took it to my local Ram dealer. They hooked up a tablet that said there was something wrong with the ABS module and it needs to be replaced. The tech then told me that there are no ABS modules available anywhere in the country, they are on back order. So here is where the complaint begins. If there are none available, that would suggest to me that an awful lot of these ABS modules have gone bad and had to be replaced I then called Ram customer service and they requested I get an order number and part number from my local Ram dealer. I did so and they had another customer service person call and when I spoke to her she said the ABS modules are unavailable because they are currently under review by their engineers. Which tells me that there is something wrong with the ABS modules. There isn’t much more of a safety hazard then not having brakes. I don’t see why a recall has not been initiated by Ram or Chrysler for these ABS modules. I am asking you to start an investigation into this problem. I Have only had this truck for 2 months. I was driving and making a turn and the electrical power steering stopped working and the steering wheel locked. I almost crashed and drove into a ditch with my whole family in the truck. Including a [XXX]. I had to slam on the breaks and barely able to keep the truck from crashing. Dashboard said " Power Steering unavailable Service Required". I turned off the truck and restarted it to see if it would fix the issue. It did not. I drove the rest of the way home going slow with the hazard lights on. Steering wheel needed to be muscled for it to make the smallest turn. I had to drive over curbs because it would have been impossible to make some of the turns needed to get home. I called Ram and reposted the incident. They did not care because my vin is not listed for the recall and that the recall is "VIN specific". I do not understand this. VIN specific means each truck would be custom made and all different. Why is my family's life being risked and not being taken seriously. Once home, I have not been back in the truck. I turned it on the next day and the alert is gone and the wheel moves again. A family of 5 is now at risk. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Vehicle is showing symptoms of "Safety Recall VB8 / NHTSA 19V-812 Electric Power Steering Gear" vehicle has similar vin, but appears not listed eligible for the recall.
My alternator went out driving down the interstate. No indication that it was bad up until it died. Has been sitting at a dealership for about a month due to this particular part having almost 3000 on back order.
The power train component, specifically the etorque alternator (MGU) has failed and verified by CDJR dealership service department. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The MGU component affects the emissions control of the vehicle and is a generator for a battery cell located in the rear of the cab. The MGU failure could cause damage to the hybrid battery system, electrical failure, and reduction of emissions control. The issue has been replicated by numerous dealerships that I have contacted as the replacement part is on a national back order (dealer representative stated over 5,000). This seems like a substantial problem known by the manufacturer and yet there isn’t a repair/replacement option for numerous consumers. There were no warning lamps alerted during the failure. The failure consists of a “whining” noise located in the engine compartment at the alternator/MGU and significant reduced fuel economy.
The contact owns a 2019 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving on the highway at 45 MPH, the steering wheel had become stiff and experienced difficulty in steering the vehicle. The contact continued to drive his vehicle until reaching his residence where the vehicle was parked and inspected, upon restarting the vehicle a message appeared on the instrument panel stating "Power Steering Assist Disabled", no warning lights were illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V812000 (STEERING) as probable cause for the failure experienced. The approximate failure mileage was 73,935.
The truck overheated and stalled and could not be restarted. The coolant level had fallen to a dangerously low level. The car was inspected and it is determined to be a coolant leak in the EGR valve body.
For about many months now I have had what sounds like a Exhaust Manifold leak. I have been trying to learn more about it. I have a 19' Ram 1500 Laramie and I have found that this is an incredibly common issue amongst Ram owners with a 5.7L V8 Engine. You tube has thousands of videos about how to repair, there are hundreds of message boards online, and even my mechanic said to me "Oh yeah I've fixed hundreds of this issue on Rams". When I remote start my truck I have to roll the windows down when I get in to let the exhaust smell out of my truck. I would assume that the air intake for the cabin climate control is pulling in the fumes from the engine bay. It concerns me to leave my truck run too long while not moving for fear of passing out. When I took it to an exhaust shop he said he could temporarily remedy this with some liquid gasket maker but he was right, it only lasted about 2 weeks. THIS NEEDS TO BE A SAFETY RECALL. I checked with my dealer service dept and he quoted me "at least $1,600" I can buy an entirely new aftermarket system for less than that. I am about 20k miles out of my warranty. This needs addressed.
Vehicle has sweet smell of coolant/antifreeze in the cab regularly. Appears to be a heater core leak. This is a safety issue due to potential engine failure and inhaling toxic chemical odors in the cab.
Fuel tank roll over valve gets stuck closed especially in cold weather conditions causing the vehicle to be unable to take fuel into the tank. Gas pumps keeps clicking off and fuel comes out of the filler neck onto the floor, multiple ram owners complaining of same problem, multiple forums online complaining of issue, many owners have been sticking a wire or pipe down the filler neck in order to disengage the closed roll over valve but issue persist shorty after. Potential fire hazard
The star connector on the CAN C BUS will start to have communication problems with the all the systems on that star connector approximately after about 15 to 20 min after driving. Systems that were constantly going in and out were the front and rear parking sense, ABS and traction would go out. Service shifter message, caused the transmission to up shift while driving at a constant speed. After getting a check engine light, I hooked up my code reader and had a code for the park sense control module. I proceeded to replace that module and was unable to get the code to go away. Upon further investigation, I found a history code for the CAN C BUS PERFORMANCE code and researched on this topic in the forums with other owners of the same truck and looked for any maintenance for this topic as well. These owners would have the same problem that my truck was having and the dealerships were unable to pin point the malfunction of all these systems. I did find video of an owner that had the same problem as my truck and he was able to pin point the problem down to the star connectors. The star connector would slowly over time while the vehicle was on would slowly take on more power then it was supposed to and overload the star connector. Upon learning about the star connectors, I learned how to replace them and after I replaced the star connectors for the exterior and interior components of the vehicle, everything went back to normal. I do still have the star connectors that were taken out incase I wanted to get them tested for the same issue the other guy found out
When I get in my truck I have to wait for a long period of time before my steering wheel will unlock. After it unlocks it drives good. It’s just take 30-45 mins for the steering to unlock before I can drive it.

I am filing a complaint regarding an unresolved safety recall repair on my 2019 Ram 1500 (VIN: [XXX] ). The vehicle was brought to an authorized dealership for a safety recall related to the ABS system. At the time of the initial visit, there were no warning lights or system faults present. After the recall repair was performed, multiple warning lights and system errors appeared that were not present prior to service. The vehicle has since been returned to the dealership on three separate occasions, and the issue remains unresolved. The dealership has now indicated a potential wiring harness issue but claims this is not related to the recall. They have requested approximately $1,200 for further diagnostic work, which we declined. The manufacturer, Stellantis, has stated that the recall for this VIN is closed and has declined to intervene, characterizing the situation as a dispute between the customer and dealership. As a result of these unresolved issues: * The vehicle cannot pass inspection in Texas * The vehicle cannot be registered or legally operated * Warning lights related to safety systems remain active We believe this represents either an incomplete recall repair or a condition introduced during the recall service process. We are requesting that this matter be reviewed as a failed recall remedy, as the safety issue has not been properly resolved and the vehicle remains in a compromised condition. Supporting documentation, including service invoices from all visits, is available upon request. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2019 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle hesitated. There was an abnormal clunking sound coming from the vehicle. The parking brake, traction control, and ABS warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, the stability control and AWD were temporarily unavailable. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the rear sensor was damaged due to the plate dislodging. The rear plate covers the disk brakes had corroded and the bolt had become loosened. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 54,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V653000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.
I took my vehicle in for an unrelated issue, a wheel speed sensor that was throwing codes. When I brought it in they advised me about a serious engine oil leak. This issue is too fold. . As far as I'm concerned this should have been a recall due to its seriousness. The housing for the oil filter is made of plastic mounted on the engine block. I live in Buffalo New York, where we were experiencing Sub-Zero to zero temperatures it is not unlike putting a hot glass in cold water it cracks, also if it is tightened too much it can also crack, which shortly before this incident I did have it in for an oil change and tire rotation, suggestion would be to perhaps make the part out of aluminum. This could have caused a serious issue with oil splashing back on the rear tires causing a spin out, possible accident, possible injury or worse. Mopar has known about this as far as I can tell from my research as far back as 2013 on the 3.2 and 3.6 Pentastar in their Jeep products in fact there was a 2012 Jeep in for service with the same problem. Apparently this has continued on the same engine in Ram also. I was told by the service people at Joe Cecconi Chrysler in Niagara Falls New York that it was nothing that I did wrong. I certainly believe that since they knew about this for such a long time that they should reimburse at least in part, if not in total of that related service up to including other parts related to this issue and the oil. I am further concerned about this being a continuing issue.
The contact owns a 2019 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel failed to turn in the intended direction. The contact stated that the failure had occurred while a trailer was hitched to the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the failure was not duplicated. The contact stated that the failure became persistent. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 81,516.
When driving down the road the truck shifter goes to neutral and says put in park and then back in drive. It already happened to me 3 different times . If your driving down the road and it throws it in neutral and there cars around there subject to hit you or you hit someone. Especially if you can't pull over right away.
While fueling the tank the pumps stops fueling voluntarily, the tank is not full it gives a hard time. Currently about 75,000 miles Longrom 2019
The contact owns a 2019 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission independently shifted into park. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed power train control module. The contact was informed that the power train control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was previously taken to several unknown dealers on several occasions due to the persistent failure. The contact stated that on one occasion the vehicle needed to be towed to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000. The VIN was not available.
ABS sensor isn't working so it doesn't stop correctly. They say they can't get a new one because they are back ordered so this must be happening to other Ram trucks besides mine if they are back ordered so far out they can give me an ETA on one.
The contact owns a 2019 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the steering wheel seized, and the vehicle became difficult to steer. The check power steering warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road and turn the vehicle off. The vehicle was started, and the power steering functionality was independently reset. The contact continued driving; however, the failure recurred a short distance afterward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed and confirmed that the power steering module had failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 113,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 45 MPH, the contact became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly, requiring increased effort to maneuver the vehicle. The power steering warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed failures with the electric power steering control module and steering gear assembly. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V812000 (Steering); but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 113,000.
The E-Torque alternator failed unexpectedly causing me to lose power while driving down a snowy highway. The vehicle shutdown then locked itself in park stranding me on a busy highway in a snowstorm at night time creating a severe safety hazard for myself and other motorists. After taking it to the local Dodge/Chrysler dealership diagnostics said the alternator went bad, however they cannot replace it as the factory currently has 5200 of these alternators on back order. So obviously this part is having major issues with failure. I’m certain it’s caused many unsafe situations. I want to know why there was no recall? Thank you very much for what you do!
Back lite(back glass) frame cracked and leaking
Bad Cam Shaft and lifters on 2019 Ram 1500 3.7 liter 6 Cyl. Have been told it is a timing issue. Check engine light is on. Have been told by dealer not to drive long distances and that the engine could shut off while operating the vehicle. Parts are back ordered through dealer. Have waited at least 1 month but no parts are available. Understand this to be a common issue with this specific vehicle and engine. It's an expensive repair.
Problem Description: Beginning in early 2025, the vehicle started experiencing intermittent electrical malfunctions that cause it to lose power unexpectedly while driving. The issue occurs without warning, creating a significant safety hazard for both the driver and other motorists. The vehicle has been taken to an authorized Ram service center on four separate occasions (February 2025, July 2025, September 2025, and October 2025), but the problem has not been resolved. Each time, the service center has been unable to identify or repair the root cause. The vehicle is still under an active Mopar Vehicle Protection Plan (Account#[XXX]), and all service has been performed at Commonwealth Dodge in Louisville, Kentucky. Despite these multiple repair attempts, the truck continues to lose power intermittently, making it unreliable and unsafe to operate. My vehicle with 70k miles on it has had a failure of the motor generator unit (MGU). This is a mild hybrid system that provides power for the vehicle. My truck is completely unusable per the service technician at the dealership. If I continue driving it the battery power will drain and I will be stranded. It appears it is a bearing failure in the generator. Upon investigation there are numerous cases of other Ram 1500 owners having the same issue at relatively low mileage for such a crucial engine component. The part is currently backordered and I just read a report that there are over 5000 currently ordered in the system, so that would lead me to believe that over 5000 owners are having the same issue. Luckily I was near my home when this occurred as this could have left me stranded. Reports say it could be 1-2 months before parts are in stock to fix the issue. This just seems unreasonable for 5000 customers of a major automotive manufacturer to have potentially dead vehicles for 1-2 months.
2019 ram 1500 big horn rear back lite leak. Anytime it rains it pours from the frame where it has developed two cracks on either side of the power sliding window. Dealer states it needs replaced after resealing the window and the 3rd brake light. Dealer states Ram will not pay for the replacement even though there is an extended warranty for 8 years or 150k miles on the backlite. I have opened a case with customer care...all they do is mediate between you and dealer they have no access to TSB bulletins or service records. TSB bulletin located on NHSTA site states replacement. Dealer states they only reseal and that the one I can see is outdated. Dealer wrote on last service record that the backlite needs replaced. Note: there is a electronic hub located behind the seats. Also, potential mold growth as the vehicle has a persistent musty smell.
While driving my ram truck, a notice goes across the cluster center saying to shift vehicle to park. No other lights go on like check engine lights etc. But the truck goes to a complete stop and makes you shift in to park then back in to drive this is dangerous because it happens to me while I am driving to include one time coming off the off ramp on the freeway possibly making someone rear end me due to the vehicle stalling I have seen lots of these issues on the ram forum this is downright dangerous. I will take it to the shop but others who have had the same or similar issues state there is no fix and it is random so it is hard to reproduce.
At times the transmission does not shift from 2 to 3 or 3 to 4 gears. Causes the engine RPM to reach red level. Have to pull over turn off vehicle and restart for the transmission to shift again. This is suppose to be a lifetime transmission and not need any maintenance. It seems to be a common problem on many forums for this particular transmission. Or it jumps into gear instead of the smooth shifting that it is suppose to do. Many people seem to be having the same issues.
