NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Ram 1500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The vehicle is a 2022 RAM 1500 Laramie Crew Cab that experienced a complete failure of the 48-volt eTorque battery pack and Motor Generator Unit (MGU). On August 1, 2025, at approximately 11,374 miles, the truck became inoperable and had to be towed to the dealership. The dealership confirmed the failure of the eTorque hybrid system components. The vehicle has remained out of service since August 1, 2025, with multiple delays in sourcing the required replacement parts (battery pack and MGU). As of early October 2025, the truck remains at the dealership and has been non-operational for over 60 consecutive days. Safety Concerns: This failure presented a serious safety risk because the truck could not be driven or restarted after it stalled in the middle of a busy street. If the failure had occurred on a freeway or in traffic, the sudden loss of power could have led to a collision, placing the driver, passengers, and others on the road at risk. Inspection and Repairs: The failure was reproduced and confirmed by [XXX] Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM (La Mesa, CA). Chrysler/Stellantis engineering reviewed the case under Case #93835258 and authorized replacement parts. As of now, the vehicle is still not restored to operational condition despite multiple part shipments and attempted repairs. Warning/Failure Indicators: Prior to failure, the vehicle did NOT display warning lamps and messages associated with the hybrid system malfunction. Once the fault occurred, the vehicle could not run. Summary: Component(s) failed: 48V eTorque battery pack and Motor Generator Unit (MGU). Risk: Sudden loss of propulsion, high safety risk. Inspection: Confirmed by dealership and Stellantis engineers. Out of service: Vehicle has been non-operational since August 1, 2025 (over 60 days). Availability: The vehicle remains at the dealership and can be inspected upon request. Alternator/generator went out and there are no available parts. This actually happened when I was driving down the interstate at highway speeds. Luckily I was able to pull off on the shoulder far enough so that no one was hurt.
2022 Ram eTorque, while slowing to a stop to turn engine stalls followed by an automatic emergency brake applied. Engine must be restarted, placed in park and brake released. In the last year it has occured 15 to 20 times. My wife refuses to drive this truck considering it to be too dangerous.
While driving the truck dashboard threw every light on, headlights went out, the truck shifted to first gear and would not shift back to higher gear, power steering went out as well. Received several trigger messages on the dashboard and was thankfully able to pull over safely. Placed the truck into park and the. Wasn’t able to place back in gear. This is the second time it has happened to me and Ram can’t figure out the cause or just doesn’t care. When researching there have been numerous other reports of this happening and Ram continues to shrug their shoulders making it the consumers problem. Second time I’m without a car and this time the dealer is claiming it will take nearly a week to even look at it while Ram says until Diagnostics there is no rental car coverage for the consumer. Had to have my truck towed after stranding me and my two kids on side of the road. Tow truck driver said he towed another 2022 Laramie just like mine last week and and that was his fourth time having the issue. He seemed to think it’s a sensor above the back window. This needs to be properly researched before someone is seriously injured as it happens at no particular reason.
While driving my vehicle broke down in the middle of the road and locked up the engine because of the etorque generator. I was blocking traffic and had to be assisted by police and then towed. This is the second time this component has failed in 14 months. Both times leaving me stranded. I am now being told it could be weeks or months before the dealer can get my part. The etorque also caused the starter to lock up and it also now must be replaced. The vehicle broke down right after I got off the interstate 2 minutes earlier and I would of been on I-20 with vehicles traveling 70 mph. Someone is going to get hurt or killed because of this part.
Motor generator engine fail. No parts available.
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the cause of the failure was not duplicated. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with turbocharger failure. The contact was informed that the turbocharger needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and unintendedly decelerated to 15 MPH. The vehicle was driven to the shoulder of the road. The contact stated that the failure almost caused a head-on crash. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. In addition, the vehicle jerked forward at full speed, and the tires were spinning. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with a failed exhaust climate control. The contact was informed that the exhaust climate control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The manufacturer requested that the engineers inspect and investigate the failure. The contact stated that the vehicle had been at the dealer for 12 weeks, and no additional information was provided by the dealer or the manufacturer. The contact was not made aware of the results of the investigation or whether the vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The contact requested a buyback. The contact stated that the vehicle was an ECO diesel vehicle, which was no longer being manufactured. The failure mileage was approximately 17,560.
1. On August 14th, 2025, Rear Air Ride Suspension failed. Received a “ Service Air Suspension Immediately” warning light right before the air suspension failed and lost control of the rear suspension. Yes it’s available for inspection. 2. The rear shocks lost air and the vehicle started to drive erratically and bouncing up and down. Could not keep control of the steering due to this. 3. It was confirmed at the dealership 8/18/2025 when the dealer representative installed the diagnostic reader in my obd port of my vehicle they determined codes for air leak and possible faulty air compressor or rear Air shocks. 4. The vehicle nor it’s components have not been inspected by manufacturer, police or insurance representative. 5. No previous warnings of this issue.
After coming to a stop, my vehicle does not accelerate. It automatically engages the park brake and the battery light starts flashing. I have to restart my truck multiple times for it to restart. I have taken it to a dealership 2 and each time they are unable to diagnose it, and release it to me with no info.
October 24 breaks dud y work and caused a crash. August 11th breaks didn’t engage and caused a crash
This truck has shut down on me, put itself into park and set the ebrake numerous times. Twice it restarted right away, one time it died and would not restart because the battery was completely discharged. It have been in service 3 times, the 1st time no faults were found, the truck was in the shop for 2 months. The second time the vehicle was in the shop for 2 or 3 months and the etorque was replaced. Currently the vehicle is in the shop, the dealership said the truck started right up with no faults found, the shop is trying to find the fault.
While coming to a stop at my driveway the truck stalled while on the auto start/stop system, the vehicle had to be put in park and restarted as normal. The next day the same issue occurred then the battery warning light came on along with a engine code. The etorque motor/generator failed and has been confirmed by the dealership it was purchased from. Had I not been on such a low volume road the stalling could cause risk to me getting hit or causing someone to hit me due to the failure to restart. Vehicle is at dealership with confirmed etorque motor/generator failure and a warranty claim has been filed/in process
False Odometer reading
The dashboard Leather is delaminating causing viewing of the heads up display and lower windshield to be difficult, It also causes condensation build up on the windshield because the leather is redirecting the air. This Truck has 10245 miles.
Purchased the vehicle(2022 Ram 1500 BigHorn w/ 5.7 HEMI Etorque) 7/26/25 from Kenny Ross Ford with 26,600 miles on it. Noticed a whining noise at lower speeds and idle. Thinking it was a pulley bearing, made repair appointment. By 7/28/25 the whining had turned to grinding. Dashboard lit up with warning lights, truck went into limp mode and eventually completely died in middle of road on way back to dealer. I am told it is the MGU and the wait time on backorder is extensive. They havent been able to give me an exact time yet of when the part will be available.
The sun visor mount broke unexpectedly and blocked my vision as I was driving and almost caused an accident, I was driving on a country road and that probably prevented the accident.
Lost power steering
Truck dies while driving. Has happened 7 times since purchase. Dealer can't duplicate.
When you step on the accelerator while driving and then release it completely, the power will suddenly disappear completely and you will feel a jerk!
The first issue appeared when I came to a stop at a light. The auto start/stop feature malfunctioned and left my truck dead in the middle of a busy intersection and wouldn’t turn back on right away. Eventually it turned on and I was able to make it home safely. I thought this was a one time thing as the truck then appeared to be working fine after. But then it happened again after that where it wouldn’t restart after the auto start/stop function didn’t restart the engine. When I brought it in to the dealership they diagnosed the problem as a faulty etorque motor and replaced the unit in July, 2023, about a year and a half after I bought the truck brand new. Now 2 years later, the issue is happening again. This time the check engine light came on, then a few minutes later the battery low voltage light came on, all while I was driving at speed on the expressway. The truck never shut off and I was able to make it to my destination safely but I feared the same issue from 2 years ago was happening again. I immediately had the 12v battery replaced under the hood the same day and got an oil change to make sure it wasn’t either of those things triggering the check engine light. The check engine light remained on and so I was able to bring it to the dealership with the battery voltage gauge reading 11.2 at the lowest while on the way. They hooked up the code reader for the check engine light which showed error code: P0A78 - Drive Motor A Inverter Performance, leaving me unable to drive the truck home as it is unsafe to drive at this point for fear the truck would lose power while under way. As it stands, truck is at the dealership awaiting further diagnostics for the same issue that’s been happening since I bought the truck new in December, 2021.
The contact's mother owned a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact stated that her mother had noticed that there was an abnormal burning odor coming from the vehicle. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times. The dealer could not duplicate the failure on some occasions, and the dealer replaced the fuel injectors on other occasions; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that while her mother was driving 60-65 MPH, the abnormal burning odor was stronger. The driver pulled into a gas station. The contact's father was occupying the front passenger seat, and the contact and her child were occupying the rear seats. The contact noticed that there was smoke coming out between the bed and the cabin of the trunk. The contact's parents exited the vehicle, and the contact ran into the gas station with her child and asked for a fire extinguisher. The gas station worker went out to extinguish the fire with the fire extinguisher while the contact called 911. The contact stated that the vehicle caught on fire, and the fire originated underneath the vehicle, between the bed and the cabin of the trunk. The contact stated that the vehicle burned from the front side of the front doors to the rear end of the trunk. The front end of the vehicle did not burn, and the engine was in good condition. The fire was extinguished by two fire department trucks. There was no injury sustained. There was no property damage. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot, where it was totaled. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,350.
The electric steering in my 2022 RAM 1500 Classic pickup failed at 40,000 miles and about 2 years & 11 months after I bought it new. It went from driving fine when pulling out from our vacation rental cabin to absolutely no power assistance 1/4 mile down the long driveway out to the highway. Thank goodness I was driving slowly because I was caught totally off guard and barely stopped before I would’ve gone into the ditch and a very large tree! I immediately called the RAM dealer where I purchased the truck and was told the earliest I could get it in for service was in over 2 weeks! So I contacted an independent garage who used to service my previous vehicles & they could get my truck in & diagnosed immediately so I took it in— code says EPS failed & I need a $4000 complete replacement of the steering system! I expect Chrysler to cover my cost for this repair. It’s obviously a known defective design.
Transmission registers hot and slips doesn’t want to drive in gear mode. Have to stop in areas to cool down the engine.
My back up camera has went out, I took it to be repaired at the dealership they said it was disconnected. It was reconnected at that time. It has quit again doing the same thing it was doing before. I have not disconnected any wires that would cause this issue.
MGU bearings in alternator are going out. Need replacement.
The onboard computer system, despite detecting a burnt out tail light, did not alert me. I happened to notice the tail light was not on because I remote started the vehicle, which turns on certain lights to indicate successful remote start, and I happened to notice the discrepancy in lighting when I walked up behind the vehicle. The fact that the on board computer system knew the light was out, and did not inform me could have put myself, my occupants, and others on the road at risk of collision and injury due to reduced marking lighting. Upon discovering the issue, I drove to the nearest auto parts store and purchased and installed a replacement bulb. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance, etc. There were no warning messages or lamps, however a scan with an OBD reader at a later date revealed a "conformed fault code" "B16D7-15 Left taillamp 1 Control-Circuit Short to Battery or Open"
Check Engine Light came on at start. Drove a few miles. Stopped at a stop sign. Upon accelerating into a right hand turn, truck stopped, emergency brake engaged, lights came on the panel stating park assist is not availaible, disengage e-brake to start engine. After disengaging the emergency brake the engine started. Later same day stopped at red light. Stalled out again when accelerating when light changed. Was able to restart after disenging the emergency brake. Minutes later attempting to park in a parking lot at low speed stalled out for again. Was able to restart after disengaging the emergency brake. This happened on a Saturday. When I started the truck Monday to take to the dealer for service the check engine light was no longer on. Dealer reports no codes found. This is the 4th time to the dealer in three months for random stalling issue.
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact stated that while reversing, the rearview camera image was blue, and the message "Camera Unavailable" was displayed. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the vehicle made abnormal knocking sounds and stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was restarted; however, the failure persisted. The contact was able to pull into a gas station and parked the vehicle. A mechanic informed the contact that the sound was coming from the engine; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.
I was trying to get into my car and my RF hub stop working I couldn't get into my car and when I was able to I couldn't start it. I was at my daughters daycare and we were stranded. They say it was due to water damage and they stated this was caused by a faulty seal on the vehicle's and water entered the truck. This item should be recalled and fixed at the dealerships expense since its an known issue. What if I needed to take my daughter or family member to the ER.
The sun visors on both passenger and driver side pop out of the socket prohibiting the obstruction of the sun properly thus limiting visibility because of sun glare.
Truck slows down and eventually loses power in middle of driving. All electrical goes out- have to wait, turn off and turn on again. Also, Scan found POAEE-00 & POBD4-00 check engine light on at 60,100
The contact owns a 2022 Ram 1500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the taillights became inoperable. In addition, the contact stated that the brake lights remained illuminated. The contact stated that the failure occurred while the contact was driving at night. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.
Issues Defrosting windshield. A lot of fog and moisture on windshield when AC is running in car. Issues with rough shifting when accelerating. Will take longer to shift into next gear.
The right turn signal light will not cancel when setting the turn signal back to neutral. The left turn will not light up the left signal. Setting the turn signal to the left signal has become the only way to cancel the right turn signal light.
On Sunday [XXX] my family and I were driving home from Fort Smith Arkansas and the truck lost the entire front right suspension. When I purchased the truck ([XXX]) from Meador Dodge I purchased the truck with the lift, tires and wheels that were installed by Meador dodge. In July of 2023 I took the truck to Alliance Dodge for an oil change and alignment. The Alliance dealership informed me at that time that the factory control arms were still on the truck and with the lift that Meador Dodge installed they should have installed the correct control arms for the lift. Due to availability based on Meadors schedule i was not able to get the truck repaired by Meador until December of 2023. Date of purchase : [XXX] Date found that the wrong control arms on the truck: [XXX] - Truck had 20,088 Miles Date when correct control arms were installed: December 20,2023 - Truck had 26105 Miles Date of Accident: [XXX] - Truck had 46,186 Miles on it In short due to Meador not installing the correct control arms and I drove the truck for over 26,000 miles which is more than 1/2 of the miles driven on the truck that the incorrect control arms caused the other parts to fail and caused the accident. On two occasions, separated by a period of weeks, while traveling approximately 25 mph, the vehicle's engine died without warning. This prompted autobraking that brought the vehicle to a stop. I was required to put the vehicle into park and was able to restart the engine, release the parking brake, and continue. A review of various forums indicates this is a known problem among other Ram 1500 owners who have experienced more severe circumstances, including crashes, as a result. Feedback from the dealership is that they are unable to reproduce the event and have no guidance on how to correct.
I was traveling at low speeds and made a left hand turn and the vehicle stalled. The next day was at the same spot and made the same left turn and the vehicle stalled again.
My 2022 Ram 1500 TRX has recurring safety-related failures of the infotainment system affecting both Uconnect 5 (12” screen) and earlier Uconnect 4 units. These issues are widespread in 2021–2024 Ram TRX and Ram 1500 models and began or worsened after forced over-the-air updates. The primary defect is black-screen failures while driving. When the screen goes black or freezes, the truck loses all functions controlled through the display, including HVAC/defrost, backup camera, vehicle settings, seat controls, and performance gauges. This creates an immediate safety hazard: I cannot adjust climate/defrost, cannot see the required rear-view camera when shifting to reverse, and cannot access key vehicle information. Owners across multiple years consistently report: • Black screens, freezes, and reboots • Loss of HVAC control and dual-zone functions • Backup camera not displaying • Vehicle/Apps tabs failing to open • Uconnect error messages • Smaller, harder-to-read gauges after updates • Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto failures • No option to decline or roll back OTA updates These failures distract the driver, remove access to federally required equipment (rear camera), and eliminate visibility and climate controls that directly affect safe operation. The system becomes unpredictable and unstable despite the vehicle being in motion. My vehicle experiences the same issues, including: Forward Collision warning randomly stops working until a restart. My TRX has multiple suspension modes, since the update I am stuck in Off Road mode, which means my suspension is very loose and not really meant for on road driving. Because this affects essential safety-related controls and visibility, I believe this is a safety defect in Ram/Stellantis Uconnect 4 and Uconnect 5 systems. I request NHTSA open a defect investigation and require Ram to correct these failures.
RAM does over the air software updates. An update they did early summer 2025 was likely for the RAM RHO and not the TRX. A lot of features changed to RHO graphics and the U Connect 5 system became unstable and would not load properly. While in this state, the ability to select vehicle functions was not possible. (Radio, suspension selections and modes, air conditioning etc.) Attempting a reset proves unsuccessful and the only way to get the system to reset is to turn the vehicle off for a period of time or disconnect the battery for a time. This makes the system work for a while until it decides to be unstable and not load properly again. It does this at inopportune times and is very annoying, and I feel makes the vehicle unsafe. The sad thing is the vehicle was working nicely before this OTA update and RAM seems extremely slow to acknowledge the issue. Almost all of the graphics now show RHO instead of TRX and one wonders what this has done to the performance of the vehicle since they have different power trains.
115V Cargo power outlet on error message blinking, blind spot alert unavailable service required message flashing, shuts down lights on dash, and radio. turns on heat, shuts off air conditioner and windows won't roll down.
DTC stated that there was a "drive motor inverter temperature sensor failure"
The electric power steering will stop working while driving. The power steering warning light will come on and spotentially causing intermittent and complete loss of power steering assist. At times I am unable to move the steering wheel and control the direction of the Ram 1500. I have had this vehicle in for repart multiple times.
Bucking during braking specifically when downshifting between 2nd and 1st gear. The dealer was able to replicate and confirmed by the dealer and manufacturer to have an issue. Numerous repairs with the vehicle remaining with the dealer from May 2025-August 2025. No resolution was found dealer stated "it was under further investigation by the manufacturer you must collect your vehicle". All paperwork attached starting May14, 2025 after issues arose.
On [XXX], shortly after [XXX], I was driving between 25–30 mph on a public road in California, my 2022 RAM 1500 with a 5.7L HEMI eTorque engine, stalled without warning. The vehicle automatically engaged the parking brake and shifted to park, causing an abrupt stop. A dashboard message appeared making me aware of the parking brake engagement. Another vehicle was closely following, creating a high risk of a rear-end collision. I have been driving as a Stuntwoman in films and television shows for over a decade and this genuinely scared me. I have never experienced anything like it in my life. The vehicle hesitated before restarting, and the check engine light (MIL) illuminated immediately. The battery light came on intermittently while driving home. The check engine light remains on as of May 11, 2025. Diagnostic codes read on May 11, 2025, show P1C64 (Stored, Pending, Permanent). The vehicle is available for inspection upon request, however, I will be bringing my truck back to the dealership that I purchased it from for repair. The sudden stalling and braking in traffic posed a significant safety risk, nearly resulting in a collision due to the inability to control the vehicle or warn other drivers. The problem has not yet been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center, as no repair attempts have been made and the car has not moved from my driveway. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. Prior to the failure, there were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms; the stalling occurred suddenly. The P1C64 code, confirmed after the incident, aligns with NHTSA complaints and investigation PE24018 (July 19, 2024) into stalling and low voltage issues in 2022 RAM 1500 eTorque vehicles. The power steering goes out driving down the road. I can hit a Crack in the road and the power steering goes out, it used to come back after turning off my truck for a min. That was over a month ago now it won't turn back on.
The engine stalls, shifts to park and applies the parking brake. Sometimes it is at a stop and others it is under 10mph. It has been happening over the las few months and our dealer can't seem to repair it.
My truck has been at the dealer for over a month for recall 24V-653 for part 68728723AA (ABS control module). Dealer took the truck in fried the abs module trying to flash the module. They ordered a new module but has been on backorder and there is no ETA on the part delivery. I have yet to even receive a fair replacement of the vehicle that is out of order from either dealer or manufacture.
My 2022 Ram 1500 TRX has recurring safety-related failures of the infotainment system. The issues began after forced over-the-air updates from the manufacturer early in 2025. The most concerning defect is black-screen failures while driving. When the screen goes black or freezes, the truck loses all functions controlled through the display, backup camera, vehicle settings, seat controls, suspension annd steering settings, and performance gauges. This inability to access multiple functions creates an immediate safety hazard, including as a major distraction to the driver while the vehicle is in motion. Another highly concerning problem frequently observed includes a screen “spasm” where all visual displays are jumping around the screen and blinking multiple times per second, rendering the entire system useless. Even when these significant issues are not present, multiple distracting issues continue to persist including wireless CarPlay/Android Auto failures and glitches - again while the car is in motion, causing major distractions. These failures distract the driver, remove access to federally required equipment (rear camera), and eliminate visibility and climate controls that directly affect safe operation. The system becomes unpredictable and unstable despite the vehicle being in motion. Because this affects essential safety-related controls and visibility, I believe this is a safety defect in Ram/Stellantis Uconnect 4 and Uconnect 5 systems. I request NHTSA open a defect investigation and require Ram to correct these failures.
Hi guys, I live in Central America, bought my truck new at the dealer in Guatemala that is Grupo Q, the dealer does not service recalls, nor does any warranty work. AS you can see with my vin recalls are still not done. I have gotten in touch with ram recently to check on this, also because the local dealer will not do any warranty work on my seat bottoms that have started to rip at 44,000km they started to rip at 5,000km. three months ago my ac compressor dyed. again no warranty, I got in touch with ram because my truck states 5 year 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Ram US told me to get in touch with RAM Mexico and they dont even pick the phone and when a miracle happens they pick up the phone just to hung it up. I got in touch again with RAM us they escalated my case to a senior tech two months ago and no one has gotten in touch with me. Its obvius RAM sells outside US and does nothing for their clients.
Uncommanded engine shutoff while rolling out at slow speed into an intersection from a complete stop. The shifter automatically was placed in park and the parking brake was automatically engaged. I restarted the truck, disengaged the parking brake and drove away.
