My vehicle is equipped with an automatic engine stop/start feature that shuts off the engine when the vehicle is stopped, as well as an eTorque system intended to assist with initial acceleration. While stopped at an intersection with a slight downhill grade (foot fully depressing the brake pedal), the auto stop/start feature engaged and the engine shut off. When I released the brake to make a right turn, neither the engine nor the eTorque system reengaged. As a result, the vehicle rolled forward under its own momentum into oncoming traffic. I immediately reapplied the brake to stop the vehicle. At that point, the vehicle unexpectedly shifted itself into Park, even though the engine never restarted. I then pressed the ignition button to turn the vehicle off and back on in order to restart the engine. After restarting, I was able to shift into Drive and move into the traffic lane just in time to avoid a collision. A crash was avoided only because oncoming vehicles were able to change lanes to avoid striking my vehicle. At the time of the incident, the vehicle had more than one-third of a tank of fuel, fewer than 33,000 miles, and has been serviced exclusively at the dealership. This incident occurred at the intersection of Riverbend Road and Park Road in Charlotte, North Carolina.
I was backing up with nothing behind me and the truck abruptly went into park, applied the parking brake, and shut down the engine. Later, on the drive to work, the battery light came on and I had received a "reduced battery capacity" message on the display. The truck has the hybrid system with less than 9k miles. Emailing the dealership, they did not claim anything is wrong. Two weeks earlier no sound came out of the speakers and that resolved itself. So, I suspected something with software and disconnected the 12 V battery for 5 minutes and the fault went away. It is troubling that the vehicle shifts into park. It seems related to Investigation:PE24018.
Vehicle ran out of fuel while still showing that it had fuel in it. Fuel gauge did show low, but it still showed that it had 23 miles left until empty. Ran out of gas and shut off going 75MPH on 5 lane highway.
While sitting at a stop right, the truck unexpectedly revved to full throttle. I stood on the brakes, shifted to neutral and turned it off.
Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA. A high complaint count may reflect vehicle popularity, not defect severity. Data sourced from NHTSA public records.
