TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 TESLA MODEL S. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING, THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM DISPLAYED A MESSAGE INDICATING THAT SERVICE WAS REQUIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TESLA (840 PROVIDENCE HIGHWAY, DEDHAM, MA 02026; (781) 471-3001) AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE MEDIA CONTROL UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 41,339.
LOSS OF BATTERY RANGE OF 40 MILES AFTER SOFTWARE UPDATE.
SHORTLY AFTER A SOFTWARE UPDATE IN JUNE, 2019 I NOTICED THAT MY CHARGE CAPACITY HAD DIMINISHED SIGNIFICANTLY (APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES OR 15%). I RAISED CONCERNS ABOUT MY BATTERY KNOWING THAT TESLA REPRESENTS AN UNLIMITED MILE 8 YEAR WARRANTY ON THE BATTERY. MY BATTERY WAS TESTED REMOTELY AND I WAS ASSURED IT WAS NOT A BATTERY ISSUE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER I BECAME AWARE THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND ACTUALLY THE SUBJECT OF CLASS ACTION LITIGATION. I HAVE TEXT MESSAGES WITH TESLA GOING BACK TO JUNE, 2019 AND AGAIN IN OCTOBER, 2019 - THE DATE OF MY MOST RECENT SERVICE. TESLA HAS FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE A PLAN OF ACTION RELATED TO THE ISSUE AND WILL NOT "ROLLBACK" THE UPDATE. I WANT TESLA TO STAND BEHIND THEIR BATTERY WARRANTY AND MAKE THE NECESSARY REPAIRS TO ENSURE SAFETY AND PROVIDE ME WITH WHAT I PAID FOR. I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT SLOWDOWNS OF CHARGING RATES AT VARIOUS SUPERCHARGERS.
BATTERY PACK: THE RATE AT WHICH THE BATTERY PACK CHARGES WAS UNILATERALLY REDUCED BY TESLA AND TESLA REFUSES TO CORRECT THIS DEFECT UNDER THEIR WARRANTY. TESLA PROVIDED NO NOTICE IN THE ORIGINAL OWNER'S MANUAL (PAGE ATTACHED) NOR EXCLUSION IN THE WARRANTY (ATTACHED) THAT THIS WAS A POTENTIAL OUTCOME AS THE CAR AGED. THE WARRANTY PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ABOUT DEGRADATION: "THE BATTERY, LIKE ALL LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES, WILL EXPERIENCE GRADUAL ENERGY OR POWER LOSS WITH TIME AND USE. LOSS OF BATTERY ENERGY OR POWER OVER TIME OR DUE TO OR RESULTING FROM BATTERY USAGE, IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS BATTERY AND DRIVE UNIT LIMITED WARRANTY." THIS STATEMENT MAKES NO REFERENCE TO AN EXCLUSION FOR A REDUCTION IN THE PEAK RATE AT WHICH THE BATTERY CHARGES, WHICH IS THE DEFECT THAT I HAVE IDENTIFIED AND TESLA HAS REFUSED TO ADMIT IS A PROBLEM. TESLA'S UNILATERAL DECISION TO REDUCE THE RATES AT WHICH THE BATTERY CHARGES, WITHOUT WARNING, HAS A SUBSTANTIAL NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE UTILITY AND USABILITY OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE. THE EXTENDED CHARGING TIMES MAKE LONGER DISTANCE (INTER-CITY) TRAVEL IMPRACTICAL AND INCONSISTENT WITH THE MARKETING OF THE MODEL S. FURTHERMORE, NEWER VERSIONS OF THE OWNER'S MANUAL INCLUDE A CLEAR AND UNEQUIVOCAL REFERENCE TO THE TYPE OF PROBLEM THAT I HAVE IDENTIFIED. THIS IS A CLEAR INDICATION THAT TESLA IDENTIFIED A PROBLEM *AFTER* THEY SOLD ME A VEHICLE AND THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE WARNED ME ABOUT THE POTENTIAL CHANGE IN THE "PEAK CHARGING RATE" AT THE TIME OF SALE. GIVEN THE COMPANY'S FAILURE TO EXCLUDE A REDUCTION IN THE PEAK CHARGING RATE FROM THE WARRANTY AT THE TIME OF MY PURCHASE AND THE SUBSTANTIAL NEGATIVE IMPACT THAT THIS HAS ON THE UTILITY OF THE VEHICLE, TESLA SHOULD BE ORDERED TO REPLACE MY CAPPED BATTERY PACK WITH A NEW BATTERY PACK.
MY MEDIA CONTROL UNIT (IPAD SCREEN-LIKE) CRASHES, IS INCREDIBLY SLOW AND DOESN'T LOAD INTERNET FEATURE THAT WAS PROMISED. TOOK TO TESLA MULTIPLE TIMES AND THEY SAID IT'S NORMAL AND THEIR FUTURE UPDATES WILL ADDRESS THIS. THIS WAS SAID LAST YEAR, AND MY INTERNET STILL DOESN'T WORK (EVEN UNDER STRONG WIFI). RE: NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: DP19005 - INVESTIGATION SUBJECT : BATTERY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE UPDATES OUR TESLA MODEL S SOFTWARE "UPDATE" GREATLY REDUCED THE AMOUNT OF TOTAL CHARGE, AND SPEED THAT WE CAN CHARGE OUR BATTERY. WE CALLED TESLA, AND INITIALLY THEY SAID THAT OUR BATTERY HAD "DEGRADED" AND THAT WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. WE RESPONDED THAT OUR BATTERY IS NOT EVEN 4 YEARS OLD (THE CAR WAS PURCHASED DECEMBER 22, 2015), AND BATTERIES DON'T SUDDENLY "DEGRADE" 15 - 20% IN ONE WEEK. TESLA MAINTENANCE THEN ADMITTED THAT THE PROBLEM IS DUE TO A SOFTWARE UPDATE THAT REDUCED THE SPEED AND TOTAL CHARGING OF THE BATTERY "OUT OF AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION". THE SERVICE REP ASSURED US THAT HE WAS LOOKING AT OUR BATTERY STATS ON LINE AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH OUR BATTERY. FINE, WE SAID, IF THERE IS NOTHING WRONG, TAKE THE CRIPPLING SOFTWARE UPDATE OFF. SORRY, CAN'T DO THAT, WAS THE RESPONSE. YOUR CAR IS ONE OF A NUMBER OF CARS THAT HAVE HAD BATTERY FIRES. IT HAS A GEN 1 BATTERY (BUILT BEFORE APRIL 2016). WE ARE RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, AND DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. OK, IF YOU ARE AWARE OF DEFECTIVE BATTERIES, JUST REPLACE OUR BATTERY. THE RESPONSE WAS "SORRY, WE CANNOT DUE REPLACEMENTS AT THIS TIME." MY WIFE NEEDED TO DRIVE 500 MILES UP TO OREGON TO BE PRESENT FOR HER MOM'S CANCER SURGERY LAST WEEK. SHE COULD NOT TAKE HER TESLA, AS IT NOW TAKES AN HOUR AND A HALF TO "SUPERCHARGE" THE AMOUNT IT USED TO RECEIVE IN 35 TO 40 MINUTES. SHE IS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR. WE READ THAT IN AT LEAST ONE OF THE TESLA BATTERY FIRES, THE ELECTRIC DOOR HANDLES WOULD NOT OPERATE AND THE PASSENGERS COULD NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR. THE TESLA CARRIES OUR FAMILY AND LOVED ONES. TESLA APPEARS TO BE PUTTING ECONOMICS ABOVE SAFELY IN THIS MATTER. WE NEED NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE TO DETERMINE IF IT IS SAFE TO CONTINUE DRIVING THIS CAR. THANK YOU.
ON THURSDAY , JUNE 7 AROUND 6:30 PM I MET WITH A BIZARRE INCIDENT ON MY 2015 TESLA MODEL S , 70D. INCIDENT TOOK PLACE ON RT 83 NEAR OAK BROOK MALL NEAR CHICAGO. THE CAR SLOWLY ROLLED AND APPROACHED A SEMI IN FRONT IN A TRAFFIC JAM. I HEARD A BEEPING SENSOR AS IT WAS ABOUT TO TOUCH THE SEMI, I IMMEDIATELY PRESSED THE BRAKE BUT THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING INSTEAD. I THOUGHT I MUST HAVE PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL, SO IMMEDIATELY LIFTED MY FOOT TO MAKE SURE I WAS PRESSING THE BREAK PEDAL. THE SECOND TIME ALSO IT STARTED ACCELERATING AND KEPT PUSHING THE SEMI IN FRONT BECAUSE IT WAS TOUCHING IT. PERPLEXED I THEN BROUGHT THE CAR TO PARKING MODE TO MAKE IT STOP. AS THE SEMI STARTED MOVING AGAIN AND THERE WAS SUFFICIENT GAP, THE CAR STARTED FUNCTIONING NORMALLY. I GOT A REPAIR ESTIMATE ON THE FOLLOWING DAY FROM A TESLA APPROVED GARAGE AND THEY HAVE QUOTED ABOVE $4000 TO REPAIR.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 TESLA MODEL S. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE MASTER CONTROL UNIT (MCU) FAILED TO ILLUMINATE OR OPERATE AS DESIGNED. DUE TO THE FAILURE, THE BACK-UP CAMERA, THE TURN SIGNALS, AND HAZARD LIGHTS WERE INOPERABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TESLA OF VAN NUYS LOCATED AT 6919 HAYVENHURST AVE, VAN NUYS, CA 91406, AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE MCU NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
MY CAR SUDDENLY LOST APPROXIMATELY 25 MILES OF BATTERY RANGE OVERNIGHT AFTER AN OVER THE AIR UPDATE BY TESLA. THE CAR ALSO BEGAN CHARGING SLOWER AFTER THE UPDATE. I BELIEVE THE UPDATE HAS DECREASED THE BATTERY LIFE OF MY CAR AND CAPPED IT TO PREVENT THE CHANCE OF THE CAR CATCHING ON FIRE SINCE THAT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED TO SEVERAL TESLA MODEL S VEHICLES. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT A FAULTY BATTERY IS STILL IN THE CARS
MY CAR'S CHARGING SPEED WAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED FOLLOWING A SOFTWARE UPDATE. I USED TO CHARGE AT 116KW UNTIL ABOUT 25% STATE OF CHARGE BUT NOW I BARELY GET 90KW AT THAT STATE OF CHARGE.
SINCE MAY SOFTWARE UPDATES, I DON'T KNOW THE REAL REASON WHY TESLA LIMIT MY CAR'S BATTERY: MAYBE TO SHUT OFF A SINGLE BATTERY MODULE LIKE THE ONE THAT CAUSED A CAR TO CATCH FIRE IN SHANGHAI (SAME YEAR MODEL AS MY CAR)... OR DECREASE THE BATTERY VOLTAGE TO REDUCE POTENTIAL FIRE...BUT IS IT RIGHT AND LEGAL THAT I PAID FOR A TOP OF THE LINE PERFORMANCE MODEL S P85D AND NOW TESLA LIMITED IT TO ONLY 68-69 KWH? I WOULD NOT MIND IF I PAID FOR 70 KWH AND BE LIMITED BY TESLA TO 68 KWH, BUT MY BATTERY IS 85 KWH AND LIMITED TO ONLY 68KWH! THE POWER ALSO SEEMED TO BE REDUCED AND CHARGING IS TAKING MUCH LONGER. WHAT MADE ME REALLY MAD IS THAT TESLA WENT BEHIND MY BACK AND CHEATED LIKE THAT USING OTA UPDATES.

ON MAY 20, 2019, THIS CAR WAS ISSUED A FORCED, OTA-UPDATE FROM TESLA, VERSIONS 2019.16.1 AND 2019.16.2 AS A RESULT OF WHAT IS BELIEVED TO BE A RESPONSE TO THE SERIES OF MULTIPLE BATTERY FIRES WORLDWIDE INVOLVING TESLA'S ELECTRIC VEHICLES. WITHOUT DISCLOSING WHAT THE SOFTWARE UPDATES WOULD DO OR WHAT NEGATIVE AFFECTS THEY WOULD HAVE, TESLA FORCED THESE UPDATES WITHOUT TELLING MY CLIENT AND OTHER AFFECTED OWNERS THAT THEIR BATTERIES WOULD BE LIMITED AND CHARGING SPEEDS WOULD BE THROTTLED, EFFECTIVELY AND SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASING THE RANGE AND SPEED OF CHARGING FOR THEIR CARS. TESLA ADVERTISED MY CLIENT'S SPECIFIC YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL (2015 MODEL S 70D) AS HAVING AN APPROXIMATE EPA ESTIMATED 240 MILES OF RANGE. THIS CASE HAS BEEN FILED AS A CLASS ACTION WHICH IS ALREADY PENDING IN THE U.S. DISTRICT COURT, NORTHERN DISTRICT OF CA, CASE NUMBER 5:19-CV-04596-VKD, BY THE NAMED CLASS PLAINTIFF AND REPRESENTATIVE DAVID RASMUSSEN. THIS OFFICE REPRESENTS MR. RASMUSSEN, AS WELL AS MR. LIN AND VARIOUS ADDITIONAL OWNERS OF THESE AFFECTED VEHICLES, INCLUDING RESIDENTS IN DIFFERENT STATES ACROSS THE COUNTY. TO DATE, TESLA HAS PROFFERED THE EXPLANATION THAT THE UPDATES WERE DONE IN ORDER TO PROMOTE THE HEALTH AND BATTERY LONGEVITY FOR THE VEHICLES, HOWEVER, THERE IS A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE AGE OF THESE CARS, THE RECENT FIRES, AND ANY CORRESPONDING WARRANTIES WITH THESE CARS BY WHICH TESLA APPEARS TO TRY AND AVOID. IN MID MAY, 2019, TESLA SENT ME A MANDATORY SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR MY 2015 TESLA MODEL S P85D LUDICROUS WITH THE 85 KILOWATT-HOUR BATTERY. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THIS SOFTWARE UPDATE MY TESLA EXPERIENCED A 30% DROP IN SUPERCHARGING RATES AT ALL STATES OF BATTERY CHARGE LEVEL AND BATTERY INITIAL TEMPERATURE. I ALSO EXPERIENCED A 25 MILE DROP IN MAXIMUM RANGE WHEN BATTERY IS AT 100% CAPACITY. I HAVE BROUGHT MY VEHICLE STILL UNDER FULL WARRANTY TO TESLA SERVICE CENTERS IN DUBLIN, CA AND BERKELEY, CA. THEY HAVE BEEN UNWILLING TO BRING CHARGING RATES AND BATTERY RANGE CAPACITY TO ORIGINAL LEVELS BEFORE THE MAY, 2019 SOFTWARE UPDATE, OR TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE. THEY HAVE REMOVED CAR PERFORMANCE FOR WHICH I PAID A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF MONEY WITH NO COMPENSATION OR ANY KIND OF EXPLANATION.
In May 2019 Tesla pushed an OTA update on the car (including mine) with caused the car to reduce charging speed a lot. I normally go at the Green Acres Mall supercharger, in Queens NY near JFK airport and my car used to charge at 74kW (about 40 min of time from 50 miles range to 200 miles range). After the update the time more than doubled (about 1 hour and 30 min of time to add the same miles range). The update was in response to a Model S bursting into flames in Hong Kong, although there have been multiple seemingly spontaneous fires over the past several years. Tesla allegedly knew the cars' batteries were defective and decided that it would rather push an update that reduced range, performance and charging speed than replace batteries under warranty. My problem with this is that I need to know if my car is safe to operate. If there were a battery chemistry which was not safe and Tesla rather than change it decided to reduce the charge rate, is this solution acceptable for NHTSA? Also this solution is impacting significantly my schedule. When I bought the car, I considered using it for certain road trips assuming the downtime was reasonable, but after this update it basically made my car usable only for local trips. If you have to charge the car a couple of times over a 500 miles trip, one thing is to add a couple of 30 mins pit stops which is fine considering that most people need to use the restrooms, get something to eat or drink, but another thing is now having to wait a total of 3 hours.
ON MAY 15TH, 2019 WITH 103,249 MILES ON MY ODOMETER, I UPGRADED MY TESLA MODEL S 70D FIRMWARE FROM VERSION 2019.12.11 TO 2019.16.1.1. ON MY NEXT CHARGE TO 80%, MY MILEAGE CAPACITY WAS DRASTICALLY REDUCED FROM 199 MILES TO 167 MILES FOR A LOSS OF OVER 30+ MILES FOR NO KNOWN REASON. I DISCUSSED THIS WITH A COWORKER WHO HAS A SIMILAR EARLY 2016 MODEL S 70D WHO EXPERIENCED THE SAME SAME LOSS OF RANGE. MY RESEARCH HAS LEAD ME TO UNDERSTAND TESLA TOOK ACTION TO DOWNGRADE HORSEPOWER AND RANGE ALONG WITH ALL OTHER ASPECTS OF PERFORMANCE THROUGH A TOTAL VOLTAGE CAP AFTER CLAIMING TO BE RELEASING A FIRE-SAFETY UPDATE, BUT OFFICIALLY NO SAFETY UPDATE WAS RELEASED. THIS CHANGE HAPPENED WHILE THE CAR WAS PARKED IN MY GARAGE AND STATIONARY.
SOMETIME IN MAY OF THIS YEAR TESLA BY UPDATES REDUCED MY BATTERY RANGE BY 25 TO 30 MILES. MY VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY IN MY GARAGE. MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH TESLA AND 3 DAYS BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT TESLA NOTIFIED ME THEY DID A REMOTE TEST ON MY BATTERY AND SAID IT WAS OK AND CANCELLED MY APPOINTMENT NOW THEY DON'T RESPOND TO MY INQUIRES
AFTER SOFTWARE UPDATE 2019.16.X LAST MAY, MY 2015 TESLA MODEL S 70D LOST AROUND 30 MILES OF RANGE. CHARGING TIMES WERE AFFECTED WITH THE CAR NOT BEEN ABLE TO CHARGE TO 100%. THE CHARGING AFTER 90% BECOMES EXTREMELY SLOW AND STOPS @97%. WHEN THE UPDATE WAS DONE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. I CONTACTED TESLA, BUT THEY REFUSED TO EVEN LOOK AT THE CAR, CANCELING MY APPOINTMENTS AND STATING THAT THIS IS NORMAL. AFTER LAST ATTEMPT TO QUESTION THE ISSUE I WAS TEXTED A MESSAGE THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF SOFTWARE ISSUE AND THEY ARE WORKING ON IT. THAT WAS ON JULY 24 2019.
THERE IS A FLAW IN THE TESLA EMMC WHICH WILL INEVITABLY CAUSE A CRITICAL PORTION OF THE CHIP TO FAIL PREMATURELY, DUE TO CONSTANT EXCESSIVE LOGGING WITHIN THE TOUCHSCREEN SYSTEM. ULTIMATELY THE MEMORY CHIP FAILS AND THE TOUCHSCREEN GOES BLACK, PLACING THE CAR IN LIMP HOME MODE, THE PARKING SENSORS AND REAR VIEW CAMERA NO LONGER WORK, IT WILL NOT CHARGE AND EFFECTIVELY BECOMES UN-DRIVABLE WHEN THE BATTERY RUNS OUT. THE EMMC IS A LINCHPIN COMPONENT FOR THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE CAR. THE EMMC, THOUGH IT DOES NOT CONTROL THE CAR'S PROPULSION, BRAKING OR STEERING, IS THE HEART OF THE TOUCHSCREEN WHICH IS USED TO TURN ON HEADLIGHTS, ADJUST HVAC AND ALL CAR SETTINGS RUN THROUGH THE TOUCHSCREEN. THE HVAC UNIT NOW HAS A "DOG MODE" WHICH KEEPS THE CABIN COOL FOR DOGS OR OCCUPANTS WAITING IN CAR. THE FAILURE OF THE TOUCHSCREEN UNIT WHILE IN DOG MODE COULD RESULT IN HEAT-RELATED FATALITY, SHOULD AN OWNER. WITHIN 6 MONTHS, AN UPDATE CAME OUT OVER THE AIR AND CHANGED MY SOFTWARE, AND ULTIMATELY LEAD TO A RANGE LOSS OF APPROX 40 MILES AND AN INCREASE IN CHARGING TIME BY APPROX 3X BECAUSE TESLA, ADMITTEDLY THROUGH THEIR SERVICE TEXTS, HAS LIMITED THE CHARGING ON MY CAR TO "PRESERVE BATTERY LIFE." THIS IS AKIN TO SELLING ME A 8 CYLINDER CAR, AND LIMITING IT TO 6 TO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE ENGINE. THE CAR HAS BECOME ALMOST UNUSABLE AS IT TAKES 3 HOURS TO CHARGE WHEN IT USED TO TAKE 45 MINUTES. THE CAR WAS ABLE TO GET A FULL 116 KW FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME WHEN THE BATTERY WAS BELOW 15%-30% AND THE CHARGING WOULD GRADUALLY (OVER 45 MINUTES) DROP TO ABOUT 40KW. NOW IT STARTS AT AROUND 110 KW AND QUICKLY (WITHIN 5 MINUTES) DROPS TO BELOW 80KW. IT TAPERS OFF AND CHARGES AROUND AN AVERAGE OF 35-40 KW. TESLA SHOULD BE CHANGING THE BATTERIES AS THEY KNOWINGLY ARE DOING THIS TO STOP THE BATTERY FROM OVER HEATING AND STARTING ON FIRE. THIS IS A HAZARD AND TESLA, INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE PART WITH A WARRANTY, LIMITS THE PERFORMANCE OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT TELLING THE OWNER.

ON APRIL 16, 2019, I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE AND PULL OUT IN REVERSE FROM MY GARAGE, HOWEVER, THE TOUCH SCREEN DISPLAY UNIT (MCU) WOULD NOT TURN ON RESULTING IN AN INABILITY TO VIEW THE REAR VIEW CAMERA. IT IS VERY RISKY TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE WITHOUT THE MCU. IT IS ALSO WHAT DISPLAYS IF THERE ARE FAILURES IN OTHER PARTS OF THE VEHICLE. TESLA SERVICE TOWED IT TO THEIR FACILITY AND THEY ULTIMATELY CONCLUDED THAT THE UNIT WOULD STILL POWER ON BUT IT ULTIMATELY WAS STUCK IN A BOOT LOOP. EVEN THOUGH I HAD THE VEHICLE FOR LESS THAN 4 YEARS, IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE OF MILEAGE OVERAGE, RATHER THAN TIME. TESLA REFUSED TO COVER IT UNDER WARRANTY AND FORCED ME TO PAY FOR IT OUT OF POCKET FOR OVER $2500. THIS FAILURE IS WIDELY KNOWN IN THE TESLA COMMUNITY AND BY TESLA ITSELF AS SERVICE EMPLOYEES ACKNOWLEDGED THE DEFECT. IT IS A RESULT OF THE EMMC NAND FLASH MEMORY FAILURE THAT DEGRADED QUICKER THAN TESLA PLANNED AFTER THE INTRODUCTION OF AUTO-PILOT. APRIL, 2019- MY MODEL S WAS STATIONARY AT A SUPERCHARGING STATION, BATTERY NOT CHARGING NORMALLY, INTERRUPTING WITH ERROR MESSAGE: BATTERY "RECALCULATING". A 90% CHARGE NORMALLY RESULTED IN 242 MILES OF RATED RANGE. SUDDENLY, A 90% CHARGE NOW RESULTS IN ONLY 210 MILES RATED RANGE. SINCE NEW, THE BATTERY GRADUALLY LOST A TOTAL OF 3% OF RANGE, OR 8 MILES, OVER 3.5 YEARS. SUDDENLY, THE LOSS OF RANGE IS AN ADDED 15% OR ANOTHER 32 MILES. THE CAR NOW CHARGES AT A MUCH SLOWER RATE. NORMAL SUPERCHARGER RATE OF CHARGE STARTS AT 116 KW. NOW, STARTS AT ONLY 60-80 KW. CHARGING NOW TAKING MUCH LONGER. I CONTACTED TESLA MULTIPLE TIMES, WITH THE ABOVE INFORMATION. I HAVE RECEIVED NO REPAIR OF ISSUE AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS AT RECEIVING SERVICE. I'VE RECEIVED MANY NEBULOUS, CONFLICTING, AND UNTRUE STATEMENTS FROM TESLA, REFUSING TO CONFIRM CLEARLY WHAT HAS CAUSED THIS BATTERY PERFORMANCE AND CHARGING PROBLEM. AT ONE POINT, THEY INDICATED "THE CHARGING RATE AND YOUR BATTERY'S CAPACITY WAS LIMITED TO PREVENT OVER DEGRADATION OF CELLS AND DAMAGE CAUSED BY OVERUSE OF SUPERCHARGING." ANOTHER TESLA REP STATED IT WAS CAUSED BY A FIRMWARE UPDATE, BUT NO ONE HAS PUT THAT STATEMENT IN WRITING. BUT, THEY STILL INSIST THE BATTERY HAS NO PROBLEM, AND NEEDS NO REPAIR. IF THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH MY BATTERY THEN WHY DID TESLA CAP IT'S VOLTAGE AND CHARGING RATE WITH A FIRMWARE UPDATE? WHY WILL TESLA NOT RESTORE MY CAR'S PERFORMANCE? INDICATIONS ARE SUCH THAT EITHER THE BATTERY SHOULD BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED. CONSIDERING THAT THIS FIRMWARE UPDATE COINCIDED WITH SOME TESLA BATTERY FIRES, I AM CONCERNED THAT A FAULTY BATTERY COULD PRESENT A DANGEROUS CONDITION. TESLA HAS NOT BEEN FORTHCOMING WITH INFORMATION, ONLY REFUSING TO REPAIR THE ISSUE.
I BELIEVE THE RIGHT STEERING KNUCKLE FAILED AFTER HITTING A BUMP. THE FAILURE CAUSE THE SUSPENSION TO CRASH INTO THE ROAD CAUSING A LARGE AMOUNT OF SUSPENSION DAMAGE.
REAR DRIVER DOOR HANDLE STOPPED PRESENTING RESTRICTING ACCESS TO THE CAR. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN COMMON BREAK ON CARS WITH SOME CARS EXPERIENCING AS MANY AS 6 DOOR HANDLES BREAKING.
FRONT END HAD PROBLEM, MADE NOISE FOR A WHILE, MADE APPT, THEN BY THE TIME APPT CAME, SOMETHING HAP AND RT FRONT TIRE/WHEEL MOVED BACK INTO WHEEL WELL. (BROKE OFF). HAD TO BE TOWED. DEALER WAS PRETTY ADAMANT TO BE SURE I DID NOT HIT OR RUN OVER SOMETHING, BUT WHEN HE FOUND OUT I DID NOT, THEN THEY WERE NICE ENOUGH TO COVER IT. THE TOW I HAD TO PAY, BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. OVER 50K MILES. LATER THEY CHANGED THE SUSPENSION SETUP ON MODELS. I FIGURED IT WAS TO FIX PROBLEM.
AS I PARKED MY CAR IN MY GARAGE ON 1/19/2019, I HAD PLACED THE CAR IN PARK AND WAS PREPARING TO EXIT THE VEHICLE WHEN IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND HIT THE FRONT OF MY GARAGE WALL. I WAS DRIVING MY TESLA MODEL S SLOWLY ON A BUSY DOWNTOWN STREET LINED WITH PARKING SPACES. SPEED WAS LESS THAN 25 MILES PER HOUR. I BRAKED TO ALLOW A CAR TO PULL OUT OF A PARKING SPOT AND MY CAR MADE A LOUD NOISE. I TRIED TO CONTINUE DRIVING BUT THE NOISE CONTINUED SO I PULLED INTO THE PARKING SPOT THAT HAD BEEN VACATED BY THE OTHER DRIVER TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED. THERE WAS WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID LEAKING FROM THE FRONT WHEEL WELL AND A VISIBLY BROKEN CONTROL ARM AT THE FRONT LEFT WHEEL. I THINK THAT IS WHAT THE PART IS CALLED BUT I AM NOT CERTAIN. THERE IS A PICTURE OF THE BROKEN PART ATTACHED. THE WHEEL WELL WAS DAMAGED AND THE TRIM AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR WAS LOOSE. THERE APPEARS TO BE NO CAUSE FOR THIS FAILURE AS THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE ROAD, NO POT HOLES, NO OBJECTS, NO BUMPS. THE CAR WAS DRIVING FINE BEFORE THIS OCCURRED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ABOUT 3 MINUTES AFTER I STARTED THE TRIP. SPEED WAS LOW THE ENTIRE TRIP AS I WAS LEAVING A RESTAURANT IN A DOWNTOWN AREA FULL OF PEDESTRIANS, STOP SIGNS AND PARKING SPACES. THE CAR WAS NOT DRIVE-ABLE FOLLOWING THIS FAILURE SINCE THE FRONT WHEEL WAS NO LONGER SUPPORTED. TESLA SENT A TOW TRUCK TO TAKE THE CAR TO THEIR NEAREST SERVICE CENTER.

A MALFUNCTION CAUSED THE SUDDEN DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIRBAGS AND SUBSEQUENT UNINTENTIONAL UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO JUMP A CEMENT BLOCK AND VIOLENTLY SMASH INTO A POLE WHILE I WAS SLOWLY PULLING INTO A PARKING STALL AT A GROCERY STORE.
WAS USING THE AUTO-SUMMON FEATURE TO GET THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE AND IT CRASHED ON THE GARAGE WALLS.
TWO OF THE FOUR DOOR HANDLES FAILED WITHIN A MONTH OF EACH OTHER. IN BOTH CASES THE DOOR HANDLES FAILED TO EMERGE FROM THE DOOR BODY. THERE WAS NO WAY TO OPEN EITHER DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE. ONE WAS THE DRIVER'S DOOR, WHICH COULD POSE A SAFETY CONCERN. ADDITIONALLY, THE ELECTRICAL MOTOR THAT OPERATES THE HANDLE WOULD SPIN NON-STOP, NO MATTER IF THE CAR WAS ON OR NOT. I WAS CONCERNED THE MOTOR WOULD OVERHEAT. THE FAULTY DOOR HANDLE IS A KNOWN PROBLEM TO TESLA. I BELIEVE A RECALL IS WARRANTED.
ON AUG 13, 2018 I WENT TO THE TESLA SERVICE CENTER IN SEATTLE AND REQUESTED AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE SEVERAL RECALLS DONE, INCLUDING SEATBELTS, TAKATA AIRBAGS, AND ALUMINUM STEERING BOLTS. I WAS TOLD IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS BY SERVICE MANAGER KASI SMITH, THAT MY CAR IS BLACKLISTED BY TESLA SINCE IT HAS A REBUILT TITLE. THAT IN ORDER FOR THE RECALLS TO BE DONE I MUST GET THE CAR "RECERTIFIED" AT A COST OF BETWEEN $5,000 TO $32,000, DEPENDING ON WHETHER REPAIRS ARE NEEDED. SO I CALLED TESLA'S NATIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE (877.798.3752) AND REACHED LOUIS ESCOBAR AT TESLA'S BURBANK, CA LOCATION. AFTER HE CHECKED WITH THE SEATTLE SERVICE CENTER (WHICH I'D ALREADY TOLD HIM REFUSED ME) AND WITH HIS SUPERVISOR, HUNTER CARLSON, MR. ESCOBAR INFORMED ME THAT MY CAR IS BLACKLISTED BY TESLA SINCE IT HAS A REBUILT TITLE, AND IN ORDER FOR THE RECALLS TO BE DONE I MUST GET THE CAR "RECERTIFIED". MY CAR WAS PROFESSIONALLY REBUILT, AND HAS BEEN REGISTERED WITH THE STATE OF WASHINGTON AND I'VE BEEN DRIVING IT FOR TWO YEARS. IF WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT WRECKED CARS ARE -GOING- TO BE REBUILT, THEN WHAT SHOULD TESLA'S POLICY BE? I SHOULD THINK THEY'D WANT TO PROTECT THEIR REPUTATION AND ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. WELL THE COST ALONE FORCES THOSE OF US WITH REBUILT CARS TO DRIVE AROUND WITH NO INSPECTIONS, EXCEPT THOSE DONE BY THE STATE PATROL, WHICH ARE ONLY CHECKING THAT WE DID NOT USE STOLEN PARTS. THE DRIVER OF THE TESLA WAS INJURED. I WAS GOING TO REPLACE THE BOLTS MYSELF ON THE SATURDAY AFTER THE RECALL ANNOUNCEMENT, BUT I DECIDED NOT TO GIVEN TESLA WAS DOING A RECALL. WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO STEER IT. BROKEN FRONT SUSPENSION FORE LINK I NOTICED A CLUNKING SOUND AT SLOW SPEED WHEN GOING OVER SMALL BUMPS, SO I STAYED OFF THE EXPRESSWAY AND SLOWLY DROVE HOME ON LOCAL ROADS. AFTER ARRIVING HOME, I BACKED UP WHILE TURNING THE WHEELS TO THE RIGHT AND THE CAR ABRUPTLY STOPPED AS THE BACK OF THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL JAMMED SOLID AGAINST THE INSIDE WHEEL WELL LINING. THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WAS AN INCH OR TWO BACK FROM WHERE IT SHOULD BE. I LOOKED UNDER FROM THE FRONT BUMPER AND SAW THAT I HAD A CRACKED FORE LINK AND A PIECE OF THE FORE LINK WAS LAYING IN MY DRIVEWAY. I STILL HAVE THAT BROKEN PIECE. TESLA SENT A FLAT BED TRUCK TO GET THE CAR AND REPLACED THE FORE LINK. THIS FAILURE SURE LOOKS LIKE IT COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I FEEL VERY LUCKY THIS DIDN'T BREAK AT HIGH SPEED ON THE EXPRESSWAY IN TRAFFIC OR ON A JUG HANDLE. THE ATTACHED PHOTOS SHOW THE FORE LINK BEFORE AND AFTER REPLACEMENT.
