TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TESLA MODEL S. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE MEDIA CONTROL UNIT BECAME INOPERABLE CAUSING SEVERAL OTHER ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS TO FAIL TO OPERATE AS NEEDED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE CAUSED THE TURN SIGNALS TO NOT FUNCTION AS NEEDED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL DEALER TESLA-BELLEVUE (14408 NE 20TH ST, BELLEVUE, WA 98007) AND THE MCU MODULE VERSION 1 WAS REPLACED WITH VERSION 2 HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000.

THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 21V035000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION, VISIBILITY, EXTERIOR LIGHTING) HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE RECALL REPAIR WAS NOT YET AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SCREEN WENT BLACK OCCASIONALLY WHILE DRIVING OR STARTING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN UNKNOWN DEALER HOWEVER, THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Tesla Model S. The contact stated that on three separate occasions while driving at highway speeds with cruise control engaged, the vehicle would suddenly brake on its own. The contact was uncertain if any warning lights would appear on the instrument panel prior to the failure. The service center nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The contact stated that he was able to document the exact time that the latest failure occurred on the vehicle. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.
I am asking [XXX] a mgr. at Centinela Tesla for a refund of the money I spent on an upgrade for the model S which after being installed began shutting down intermittently. Tesla's system records all shutdowns of the cars screens, so If Tesla does not have records of the cars screens shutting down prior to the upgrade, this would indicate it did begin with the upgrade. The NHTSA made a recall for an issue with the back up cameras which was when TESLA offered me a 1500.00 dollar upgrade instead of the free NHTSA recall fix, saying it was better. A [XXX] at Torrance Tesla said he saw 2 shutdowns recorded in the week prior and did not have time to look up beyond that week.. [XXX] gave me a free accessory saying sorry for your problems but this is all I can do. The receipt for the free accessory states it was given at no charge for the troubles with the screens. Tesla's mechanic explained once the upgrade was completed to make the dash cams functional the system must shutdown & restart to rid it self of data accumulation. The cars screens did not shut down prior to having the upgrade because the dash cams only became active as a result of the upgrade hence creating the data which must be expelled by shutting down. Once this issue becomes evident to the customer Tesla simply tells you we don't have a workaround for this issue and sends you on your way. Befoe agreeing to the upgrade I asked [XXX] a manager at Centinela Tesla that preformed the installation if this upgrade would make the on board camera system function as dashcams, which she said yes. We communicated through text so there is a record of our conversation. After four months with the issue I sold the car. [XXX] please make my refund, so I don't need to take this issue to small claims court. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE TESLA SHOP ON INDEPENDENCE AT CHARLOTTE, NC, AS EXTERNAL NOISE WAS INCREASINGLY AUDIBLE. I WAS CALLED FROM THE TESLA SHOP TO REPLACE THE TIRES AS A POSSIBLE CAUSE. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED & ALIGNMENT DONE 2/16/21 FOR $1900. PICKED CAR 2/17/21 AND SAW THE TIRE PRESSURE CAME UP RIGHT AT THE PARKING LOT (STATIONARY) AND STATING LEFT FRONT TIRE PRESSURE 35 (42 PSI NORMAL). TESLA WAS SWAMPED WITH CUSTOMERS SO I WENT TO DISCOUNT TIRES TO GET THE PRESSURE RESTORED 2/18/21. MORNING OF 2/19/21, PRESSURE CHECK CAME BACK ON. I WENT BACK TO DISCOUNT TIRES, SAME TIRE PRESSURE WAS DOWN TO 29. I CALLED TESLA THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THE REPLACEMENT TIRE RIGHT FROM THE SHOP, HENCE I DROVE STRAIGHT TO THE TESLA SHOP FROM DISCOUNT TIRES AS I COULDN'T RISK THIS HAPPENING AGAIN. TESLA FOUND A CRACK IN THE WHEEL OF THE FAULTY TIRE AND ASKED ME TO PAY $1,000 AND THEY WOULD WAVE THE LABOR OF CHANGING THE WHEEL AS A COURTESY. ISSUE IS, HOW DID THE WHEEL BECOME FRACTURED SINCE DROPPING IT AT THE SHOP? I NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE BEFORE DROPPING OFF THE VEHICLE. TESLA WOULD NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY BUT OFFERED ME 2 OPTIONS; I PAY $1,000 FOR A NEW WHEEL OR THEY LOAN ME A WHEEL TO GO FIX MY CRACKED WHEEL ELSEWHERE. I WAS FRUSTRATED, HENCE I TOOK THE LOANER WHEEL. ON LEAVING THE TESLA SHOP, THE TIRE PRESSURE CAME ON BUT THIS TIME FOR THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. IT WAS LIKE HAVING A BAD DREAM. LONG STORY SHORT, I WENT BACK TO DISCOUNT TIRE, THERE WAS AN IDENTICAL CRACK IN THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. I WENT ON TESLA FORUM TO REVIEW COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER CUSTOMERS AND THIS IS UNFORTUNATELY COMMON, ESPECIALLY AMONGST MODEL S. THIS IS LIKELY MANUFACTURING DEFECTS AND CAN BE CATASTROPHIC FOR ROAD USERS IF NOT URGENTLY ADDRESSED. I AM A PHYSICIAN AND HAVE SEEN THE TRAGEDY'S PEOPLE SUFFER WHEN QUALITY IS COMPROMISED.
PURCHASED A USED TESLA, TODAY (ON 2ND DAY) DRIVING ON LOCAL STREET, IT WAS RAINING A BIT, TURNED ON WIPERS, DIDN'T WORK, PULLED OVER AND ATTEPMTED FEW MORE TIMES, NO LUCK. TESLA ATTEMPTED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE REMOTELY THROUGH BASIC TROUBLESHOOTING BUT NO LUCK. WHEN WIPERS WERE TURNED ON, IT WAS PULLING DOWNWARD INSTEAD OF GOING UP. THEY ENDED UP TOWING CAR, CURRENTLY IN SERVICE CENTER.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE REVERSING INTO A PARKING SPACE AT 1 MPH, THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR INADVERTENTLY OPENED AND THE AUDIBLE WARNING SOUND ALERTED THAT THE DOOR WAS OPEN. THERE WERE ISSUES PRIOR WITH THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR NOT OPENING FROM THE OUTSIDE WHEN IT WAS UNLOCKED. THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR WOULD ONLY OPEN FROM THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT INFORMED THE DEALER OR THE MANUFACTURER OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,345.
THE WHEEL CONTROL ARM BROKE FOR NO REASON. IT SEEMS TO BE DEFECTIVE FROM THE TIME IT WAS MADE, IT HAPPENED WITH A POPPING SOUND WHEN PARKING
I HAD TO REPLACE CHARGING SYSTEM WITH TOTAL EXPENSE OF 2589.75. UNFORTUNATELY THE CHARGING SYSTEM THAT IS PART OF BATTERY, IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AS LONG AS THE BATTERY. MY MILEAGE WAS 56814. ALL MY SAVINGS FROM GAS AND REGULAR MAINTENANCE COSTS IS EVAPORATED. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE HAD THE SAME ISSUE. THE CHARGING SYSTEM IS NOT LASTING AS LING AS THE BATTERY. I FIND IT TESLA'S SELLING POINT OF " POTENTIAL SAVINGS" IS MISLEADING. I AM NOT SURE IF ANYONE OUT THERE MADE THE SAVINGS BY OWNING THE CAR AS MUCH AS IT CLAIMS. IN MY OPINION TESLA SHOULD REMOVE THE POTENTIAL SAVINGS CL;AIM TOTALLY. ITS JUST A UNREALISTIC AND MISLEADING CLAIM.
SINCE LAST YEAR, I'VE BEEN HAVING FREQUENT(6-8WEEKS) ISSUES WITH THIS CAR ALL CENTRAL TOUCHSCREEN RELATED. IT STARTED SMALL BUT KEEPS GETTING BIGGER AND BIGGER. I DON'T DRIVE MUCH SINCE COVID AND I THINK IF THAT WASN'T THE CASE THE ISSUE WOULD'VE BEEN UNBEARABLE. LAST NOVEMBER IT WAS JUST THE SCREEN SHUTTING DOWN WHILE DRIVING. THIS JAN/FEB THE ISSUE WORSENED WHERE THE SCREEN/LIGHTS ACTED LIKE THEY WERE POSSESSED, THE CENTRAL SCREEN DISPLAY SHOWED A BATTERY WARNING TO PULL OVER AS THE CAR IS ABOUT TO DIE EVEN THE OTHER SCREEN SHOWED OVER 200MILES LEFT. THE WORST OF IT ALL, I WAS ON A NARROW STREET(1LANE EACH) GOING HOME, I HAD NO NOISE NO MUSIC IN THE CAR. THE CAR WENT FROM SILENT TO EXTREMELY LOUD ON ITS OWN. EVERY SINGLE ALARM WARNING SOUND IN THE CAR STARTED AT THE EXACT SAME TIME AT FULL VOLUME. STARTLED, I VEERED OFF THE ROAD AND QUICKLY PULLED OVER. IF THERE WERE OTHER CARS NEARBY I WOULD HAVE CRASHED. I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM TESLA HIGHLIGHTING MOST OF THE ISSUES EXCEPT THE SOUND COMPONENT. THE SERVICE CENTER REFUSED TO FIX ISSUES STATING THAT IT DOESN'T AFFECT DRIVING. EXCEPT THAT IT DOES BY STARTLING YOU TO CRASH. NO OTHER CAR DOES THAT. BOTH THE RECALL LETTER AND THE 1800# CONFIRM THAT THESE ISSUES STEM FROM A PIECE OF HARDWARE THAT NEED TO BE REPLACED BUT THE SERVICE MANAGER DOES NOT WANT TO FIX OR REPLACE THE TOUCHSCREEN. HE SAYS IT'LL BE 1500$ TO REPLACE EVEN THOUGH IT'S UNDER WARRANTY AND ASSURED ME NUMEROUS TIMES THAT THE PROBLEMS WILL THEN STOP. HE KEPT SAYING THAT A SOFTWARE UPDATE WILL TEMPORARILY PATCH THINGS UP UNTIL THE NEXT BREAKDOWN WHICH IS GUARANTEED AND USUALLY EVERY 2 MONTHS OR SO. SERIOUSLY HOW CAN A SOFTWARE UPDATE FIX A HARDWARE ISSUE(THAT HE REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE EVEN THOUGH HIS COMPANY HAS). THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A BETTER PART OF A YEAR. I SHOULDN'T BE FORCED TO PAY FOR SAFETY AT THIS POINT THE SERVICE CTR IS IGNORING ME
OWN TESLA MODEL S FOR 4 YRS NOW AND FOR LAST 3 MONTHS I HAVE STARTED NOTICING THAT THE MCU (TOUCHSCREEN) DOESN'T POWER UP AND SOMETIMES I HAVE TO WAIT FOR 5-10 MINUTES FOR CAR TO POWER ON. I HAVE REPORTED 4-5 OCCURRENCES OF THIS ISSUE TO TESLA ALREADY BUT EVERYTIME THEY PUSHED BACK CITING IT IS NOT MCU RELATED. IN FACT I REPORTED THEM THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE PART OF NHTSA RECALL ISSUE SENT OUT TO TESLA ASKING TO REPLACE MCUS FOR 2017/2018 MAKES BUT TESLA HAS NOT TAKE ANY ACTION YET. I REPORTED ANOTHER OCCURENCE OF IT TODAY AGAIN AND SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH TESLA SERVICE ON 11TH FEB,21. THIS COULD POTENTIALLY BE A SAFETY ISSUE IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY AND MY CAR WON'T POWER UP. REQUEST NHTSA TO INTERVENE AND GET MY MCU ISSUE RESOLVED BY LIASONING WITH TESLA TEAM AS I HAVE TRIED MY BEST TO PUSH TESLA FOR A FIX BUT UNFORTUNATELY COULDN'T GET A RESOLUTION YET
THIS WAS ISSUED A FULL RECALL BY NHSTA. THE VENDOR, TESLA INDICTED ONLY A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE A CHIP REPLACEMENT WAS AVAILABLE. TO DATE NO REPAIR HAS BEEN MADE AND THE VENDOR IS NON RESPONSIVE. YOUR HELP NEED TO EFFECT THIS RECALL
INFOTAINMENT EXTREMELY SLOW MANY TIME IT FREEZES OR BLACK OUT. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE DAY, I ALWAYS TAKE IT TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR AN THEY SAYS THAT EVERYTHING IS OK JUST CLOGGED UP DUE TO DATA. SOME ELECTRNIC DEVICE IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY, THEY DON'T WANT TO FIX IT.
WHILE IN MOTION OR STATIONARY, THE TOUCHSCREEN CAN BECOME UNRESPONSIVE OR SHOW SIGNIFICANT LAGS WHICH IMPACT THE USE OF GPS, BACKUP CAMERA, CLIMATE CONTROLS ESSENTIALLY ALL CONTROLS THAT ARE ACCESSED VIA THE TOUCHSCREEN. I HAVE CONTACTED TESLA SERVICE SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS AND NO RESOLUTION HAS BEEN MADE. THE VEHICLE IS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THEY WON'T REPLACE THE MCU BECAUSE THEY SAY "THIS IS TO BE EXPECTED."
MY 2017 TESLA MODEL S P100D SUFFERS FROM SEVERE DEGRADED "INFOTAINMENT" COMPUTER. TESLA HAS SAID IT IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE EMMC (EXISTING NTSB RECALL) IN MY CASE, BUT INSTEAD INADEQUATE PROCESSING POWER FOR THE NEW SOFTWARE, AND THEY'VE RECOMMENDED A $2500 "UPGRADE". THE SYSTEM RANDOMLY GOES TO BLANK SCREENS, FAILS TO NAVIGATE PROPERLY, FREEZES, AND IS A MAJOR DISTRACTION WHILE DRIVING. TESLA HAS OFFERED NO SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEMS.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TESLA (9111 BLUE ASH RD, CINCINNATI, OH 45242, (513) 745-9111) HOWEVER, THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 34,000. *BF
THE TESLA MODEL S MAIN SCREEN BLACKED OUT, CAUSING ME TO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO ANY OF THE CAR'S CONTROL SYSTEM OTHER THAN TO DRIVE IT (NO BACKUP CAMERA, CLIMATE CONTROL, MUSIC, DOOR LOCKING, SUSPENSION ADJUSTING, TURN SIGNAL CHIMING, AND OTHER ESSENTIAL SAFETY FEATUES). WHEN I TOOK IT TO TESLA, THEY IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM BUT TOLD ME TO FIX THE ROOT OF IT, I'D HAVE TO PAY FOR AN "MCU2 UPGRADE" OF OVER $1000 EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW THE COMPUTER CHIP IS BAD (AND WILL GO BAD AGAIN). THIS HAPPENS SOMETIMES WHILE THE CAR IS PARKED AND OTHER TIMES WHEN IN MOTION.
AUTOPILOT HAS FAILED MANY TIMES. CAR ALMOST CRASHED. TOOK IT TO DEALER FOR REPAIR BUT THEY DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM AFTER SPENDING $100,000, THE AUTOPILOT SHOULD WORK AS DESIGNED.
WITH FULL CHARGE, CAR DRIVES ABOUT 110 MILES. IT IS SUPPOSED TO GO ABOUT 230 MILES. TOOK IT TO TESLA DEALER AND THEY WILL NOT REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THIS IS DECEPTION ON TESLA'S PART. THE CAR IS SUPPOSED TO DRIVE 230 MILES BUT GOES ONLY 110 MILES.
MY ON BOARD MCU, MAIN SCREEN KEEPS GOING BLANK WHILE DRIVING. THIS CAUSES THE LOSS OF FUNCTIONALITY OF MY VEHICLE CONTROLS. I LOSE CONTROL OF THE DEFROST AND OTHER CLIMATE FUNCTIONS. ONE MORNING WHILE DRIVING IN EXTREME FOG AND HIGH HUMIDITY I COULD BARELY SEE BECAUSE I COULD NOT CONTROL THE DEFROST FUNCTION. HAVING THE MAIN SCREEN GO OUT ALSO CAUSES A LARGE DISTRACTION
CENTER CONSOLE GETS BLACK SCREEN OCCURRENCES AND LOSS OF AUDIO HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 15-20 TIMES. PURCHASED CAR FROM TESLA IN MID OCTOBER. SCREEN ISSUES SINCE HAVING THE CAR AND NO AUDIO, TESLA STATES TO PATIENTLY AWAIT FE UPDATE HAVE HAD THE CAR SERVICED MULTIPLE TIMES FOR THE ISSUE. SEVERAL APPOINTMENTS CANCELED BY TESLA STATING THERE IS NO FIX AND TO PERFORM RESET ON CAR WHICH IM NOW DOING EVERY 5-10 DAYS.THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY IN PARK AND HAVE HAD TO DRIVE MULTIPLE TIMES ON THE FREEWAY AND SURFACE ROADS WITH NO SCREEN OR AUDIO. HAS OCCURRED 11-17-20, 11-28-20, 12-8-20, 12-19-20, 1-2-21, 1-8,21,. WHEN BLACK SCREEN OCCURS NO WARNING CHIMES OR AUDIO PRESENT. TESLA REFUSES TO ADDRESS THE HE ISSUE DESPITE BEING AWARE OF IT AND HAVING BEEN GIVING EXACT DATES OF OCCUPANCIES PICTURES OF BLACK SCREEN ETC.
MY SCREEN KEEPS FREEZING AND IS BLACK CAUSING A SAFETY HAZARD AND I CAN'T DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO TESLA SEVERAL TIMES BUT THEY WON'T FIX IT. THE COMPUTER IS BROKEN AND THE CHIP HAS FAILED. THE AC DOESN'T WORK, I CAN'T CONTROL MY RADIO, MY BACK UP CAMERA DOESN'T WORK, TURN SIGNALS DON'T WORK, HANDS FREE SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK, NAV SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK. TESLA NEEDS TO REPLACE MY ENTIRE NAV, ENTERTAINMENT COMPUTER TO RETURN THE CAR TO WHAT I ACTUALLY PAID FOR. THE CLOCK DOESN'T WORK, AND I CAN'T TELL HOW MUCH BATTERY LIFE I HAVE LEFT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND THEY HAVE REFUSED TO REPAIR THEN COMPUTER. THIS IS AN ELECTRIC CAR AND 100% RELIES ON THE COMPUTER TO CONTROL EVEN THE SMALLEST DETAILS. I CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR AND TRY TO REBOOT THE CAR WHILE I'M DRIVING. NOTHING HAS WORKED. TESLA KNOWS ABOUT THIS SITUATION AND I AM NOT THE ONLY OWNER WHO HAS THIS PROBLEM.
THE SCREEN BLACK OUT AND WON'T BACK ON, I WAS DRIVING WITHOUT CAR INFO, AND WHEN THE SCREEN IS OFF, THE LEFT/RIGHT SIGNAL LIGHT IS NOT WORKING, BECAUSE I DON'T HEAR THE "TIDA TIDA" SOUNDS WHEN I TURN ON THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL. ALSO I WAS NOT ABLE TO SEE BACK CAMERA WHEN THE SCREEN WAS OFF. AND CANT OPEN MY FAN/AC, I REPORT THE PROBLEM TO TESLA, THEY SAID THEY NEED THE EXACT DATE AND TIME (DETAILED TO MINUTES) WHEN THE SCREEN WAS OFF TO CHECK UP THE PROBLEM! SINCE I DON'T HAVE THAT TIME RECORDED, THEY ASK ME TO WAIT UNTIL IT HAPPEN NEXT TIME. THAT BLACK SCREEN HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW DAYS LATER, I TELL THEM AND SCHEDULED FOR A CHECK UP AND GIVE THEM THE EXACT TIME IT HAPPEN, THEY GOT MY CAR AND CHECK UP SAY THEY ARE NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE ISSUE THAT NEED TO RECALL/REPLACEMENT OF THE SCREEN AND SAID THEY DID HELP ME CLEAR ALL DRIVING HISTORY OF THE CAR, THEY DID NOT REPLACE ANY PART OR SCREEN FOR ME, SINCE I READ THE NEWS MY MODEL WAS IN THE RANGE OF THE SUGUESTED RECALL, I AM AFRAID IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN IN THE FUTURE AND MY WARRANTY WILL EXPIRE SOON, THEY ARE TRYING TO NOT FIX THAT PROBLEM!!!! PLEASE HELP, I WANT THE BLACK SCREEN PROBLEM SOLVED, NOT ONLY JUST REMOVE MY DRIVING RECORD FOR TEMPORARY EASE, THEY SHOULD REPLACE THE SO CALLED FLASH MEMORY DEVICE TO MAKE SURE IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN.
My vehicle is the subject of Recall No. 21V-035 (SB2121001). At the time that I received notice of this recall, about 1 year ago, I had already complained to Tesla about the board malfunctioning for approximately 4-5 months. Each time I contact the Mfr, Tesla, about this issue, they continue to claim unavailability of parts for multimedia display board. They do, however, have an upgraded board that they would put in for a $1500 charge (https://www.tesla.com/support/infotainment). If they have no plans to offer replacement parts for my defection board, should they not be forced to put in the compatible part at no charge even though it is being sold as an "upgrade" (which they hope will get them around having to foot the bill for Recall replacements). After all, it's only an upgrade if the original board functions as designed...which it does not. The car was sold with a set of listed features - but maps don't update, voice recognition is nearly non-functional, and now video recording from the car's cameras have lost color and are two-tone. I even offered, as a compromise to get me a working board, to pay Tesla $1000 for the upgraded board and they declined. I'm requesting help forcing the Mfr to either fix my board with a replacement daughter board or replace the whole thing with a working upgraded infotainment board - all under the aegis of the existing recall.
While on I65N, traveling at full speed on cruise control but not auto drive, the vehicle automatically applied the brakes. There was no apparent reason to brake. There were no cars in front or to either side and nothing on the road. We slowed quickly and abruptly, throwing everyone in the car forward. The slowing was so fast and so extreme that we were almost rear ended by the semi behind us. If he had not been able to move partially into the right lane and us into the left, he would have hit us at 70 mph. This is not the first “phantom braking incident ” that we have had but it definitely is the most dangerous one.
REOCCURING DISPLAY ISSUES. BLANKING OUT OF SCREEN. IMAGES ON THE DISPLAY THAT WILL NOT DISAPPEAR UNLESS RE-BOOTED, LOSS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS SUCH AS FAN AND AC, OCCASIONAL LOSS OF ALL SOUND (BLINKERS, MEDIA, ETC. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON OCCASION AND ALSO WHEN INITIALLY STARTING THE VEHICLE. THE UNSAFE CONDITION IS LOSS OF ACCESS TO MOST OF THE VEHICLE CONTROLS AS THE DISPLAY BLACKING OUT MAKES CRITICAL CONTROL ACCESS PROBLEMATIC. ATTACHED ARE IMAGES BELOW. I HAVE DISCUSSED THIS WITH TESLA SERVICE CENTER. THEY ADVISED THAT THIS IS A SOFTWARE ERROR. THEY DO NOT IDENTIFY THE ERROR OR WHEN IT WILL BE CORRECTED. I HAVE MADE SEVERAL REQUESTS WITH THE TESLA SERVICE CENTER IN AUSTIN TEXAS TO HAVE THIS RESOLVED. THEY INDICATE THAT THE REVIEW OF LOGS BASED ON THE DATES AND TIMES OF THE INCIDENTS DO NOT INDICATE A HARDWARE MALFUNCTION SUCH AS THE DISPLAY OR EMMC CHIP. PLEASE NOTE I HAVE OTHER FILES, BUT COULD NOT LOAD THEM.
The contact owns a 2017 Tesla Model S. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the instrument panel went blank and the contact was unable to control any electronic features inside the vehicle. The contact stated that the Back Over Prevention warning light was illuminated. The contact stated he experienced the failure several times per week. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer and was informed that the software needed to be updated. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V035000 (Back Over Prevention, Visibility, Exterior Lighting). The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer and was informed the vehicle was not eligible for the recall repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

MY VEHICLES MAIN SCREEN CONSISTENTLY DOES NOT WORK. THE SCREEN IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT HOSTS MY BACK UP CAMERA, THE PIN CODE NEEDED TO TURN ON THE VEHICLE TO PUT IT DRIVE, MY BLUETOOTH SETTINGS, AC FUNCTIONALITY, ETC. THE SCREEN HAS ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS FROZE ( WHILE PROVIDING NAVIGATION) SIMPLY NOT TURNED ON AND HAD TO BE RESET USING MANUAL CONTROLS, AND RESTARTED WHILE MID DRIVING AND THEREFORE NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE DIRECTIONS MID DRIVE. THE ISSUE HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP TO TESLA AND THEY SIMPLY DID A FIRMWARE RESET WHICH RESOLVED NO ISSUE. THESE ISSUES HAVE OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING, PARKED, ON FREEWAY, CITY DRIVING, ALL SITUATIONS. THE PROBLEM AND MILEAGE WAS ADJUSTED I AM WONDERING IF MILEAGE CAN BE ADJUSTED BY THE DEALER , I THINK IT IS ILLEGAL. INTERMITTENTLY THE CAMERAS ARE FOGGING EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT COLD. NO CLEAR EXPLANATION GIVEN BY THE CREW AT REPAIR PLACE
I HAVE BEEN REACHING OUT TO TESLA SERVICE CENTER REPEATEDLY REGARDING THE EMMC UNIT FAILURE WHERE IT HAS GONE COMPLETELY BLANK AND TURNS OFF DURING MY DRIVE SEVERAL TIMES. I LOSE ALL AIR CONTROL, BLUETOOTH, REARVIEW CAMERA, AND EVERYTHING THAT THE MAIN MCU UNIT CONTROLS. I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN WHEN IT WAS VERY COLD OUTSIDE DURING THE NIGHT WHEN I LOST VISIBILITY DUE TO THE FOGGING INSIDE AND NO DEFOGGING CONTROL AVAILABLE. I CONTACTED THE SERVICE CENTER IMMEDIATELY ON DECEMBER 22, 2020 AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT, WHICH THEY DIAGNOSED VIA LOGS ON THEIR END AND NEVER AGREED TO PHYSICALLY DIAGNOSE MY CAR IN PERSON. THEY KEEP CLAIMING THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT WILL BE ADDRESSED IN A FUTURE FIRMWARE UPGRADE, FOR WHICH THEY DO NOT KNOW THE TIMELINE AT ALL SINCE THE ENGINEERS ARE STILL WORKING ON IT, AND THAT THIS IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE. I DETAILED ALL THE ISSUES I WAS HAVING WHERE EITHER MY SCREEN WOULD FREEZE UP OR GO BLACK AND TURN OFF COMPLETELY AND GAVE THEM EXACT DATES/TIMESTAMPS. EACH TIME THEY SAW THERE WAS AN ERROR AND VERIFIED THAT THE LOGS SHOWED AN ISSUE BUT THAT THIS WAS STILL NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE AND I HAVE TO JUST PUT UP WITH THIS UNTIL THE FIRMWARE UPGRADE IS ROLLED OUT. THIS WAS THEIR JUSTIFICATION FOR NOT REPLACING MY UNIT UNDER THE WARRANTY ADJUSTMENT PROGRAM, AND NOW I DON'T SEE MY VIN IN THE RECALL DATABASE EITHER. I AM FRUSTRATED AND EXPRESSED TO THEM SEVERAL TIMES THAT I AM HONESTLY SCARED DRIVING THE CAR. A PHANTOM EMERGENCY BRAKING EVENT OCCURRED TWICE ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2020 WHILE DRIVING FROM DALLAS TO HOUSTON BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 12PM - 4PM CST. I ALSO EXPERIENCED THREE BLANK SCREEN EVENTS DURING THIS SAME TRIP. THE MEDIA CONTROL UNIT (MCU) CONTROLLING THE MAP, RADIO, AIR CONDITIONING, BLINKER SOUNDS ALSO CEASED OPERATING. THE SECOND OCCURRENCE OF BOTH THE PHANTOM EMERGENCY BRAKING AND BLACK SCREEN EVENT OCCURRED ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 9, 2021 SHORTLY AFTER 10AM CST. THE SUDDEN PHANTOM EMERGENCY BRAKING EPISODE I EXPERIENCED AT HIGHWAY SPEED FROM DALLAS TO HOUSTON WAS EXTREME. I SIMPLY DO NOT FEEL SAFE USING THE CRUISE CONTROL OR AUTOPILOT IN THIS VEHICLE. VEHICLE INTERIOR HEATING SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY. ONLY BLOWS HOT AIR AT "HI" TEMPERATURE, ANY OTHER TEMPERATURE BLOWS COLD AIR. THIS IS EFFECTING THE DEFROSTING FEATURE AS WELL. IT WILL TAKE 2-3 MINUTES TO DEFROST THE WINDSHIELD WHILE MOVING, MAKING VISIBILITY 0, AND DANGEROUS TO DRIVE.
THE CENTER SCREEN/CONSOLE CRASHES AND STAYS OFF FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME WHEN STARTING THE CAR AND WHEN DRIVING.
ON 12/03/20 AT AROUND 9:57AM, AFTER I SLOWLY TURNED LEFT INTO A PARKING NEAR A WHITE TRUCK AND JUST ABOUT TO BACK UP INTO MY COMPANY'S EV CHARGING PARKING LOT THEN THE CAR SUDDENLY SPED FORWARD CLIMBING OVER THE CURB OF THE MEDIAN SEPARATING THE PARKING AREA AND A DRIVEWAY ON THE SIDE OF ANOTHER COMPANY'S BUILDING THEN RUNNING THRU THE MEDIAN AND HEADING FAST TOWARD THE BUILDING BEFORE I SLAMMED THE BRAKE IN TIME TO STOP THE CAR ~15 FEET AWAY FROM HITTING THE BUILDING. THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE CAR SCRAPED A TREE ON THE MEDIAN AND THE DRIVER SIDE MIRROR BROKE THE TREE SUPPORTING POLE. AFTER THE CAR WAS TOWED TO TESLA SERVICE CENTER 2 HOURS LATER, THEY REPORTED THE NEXT DAY THAT THEY FOUND NO ERROR WITH THE CAR. I WAS TOTALLY CAUGHT OFF GUARD BY THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF THE CAR THAT ICOULD NOT BRAKE EARLY ENOUGH TO STOP THE CAR ON THE MEDIAN AFTER IT CLIMBED OVER THE CURB. IT WAS A CLEAR DAY, I TURNED LEFT INTO THE PARKING WITH CAUTION AND FOCUS ON SAFETY ESPECIALLY KNOWING THE WHITE TRUCK WAS NEARBY AND THE MEDIAN WITH THE TREE WAS VISIBLE IN FRONT. THIS IS WHERE I PERFORMED BACKING UP MY CAR ALMOST DAILY AT WORK SO I COULD CHARGE MY CAR IN THE COMPANY'S EV CHARGING PARKING LOT FOR THE LAST 6 MONTHS. BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THIS LIFE THREATENING INCIDENT, MY HEALTH, MIND, EYE SIGHT AND AWARENESS WERE AND ARE VERY GOOD. THE CENTRAL COMPUTER (LARGE SCREEN IN THE MIDDLE) DOES NOT PERFORM WELL AND FREEZES WHILE DRIVING OR SOMETIMES WONT LET ME START. TESLA SAID NOTHING WRONG WITH IT AS ON THEIR SYSTEM DOESNT SHOW ANY SOFTWARE ISSUE AND SO THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING. I AM PAYING TELSA TO CHANGE THIS TO MCU2. IN 2017 TESLA MODEL S, THE MAIN SCREEN GOES BLANK ONCE A WEEK. I TOOK IT TO TESLA SERVICE CENTER 4 TIMES IN LAST 4 MONTHS. GPS IS BARELY FUNCTIONAL AND MY REVERSE CAMERA WILL NOT APPEAR MANY TIMES. SOMETIMES MY CAR WON'T CHARGE. THEY IGNORE AND SAY IT'S NORMAL. MCU NEEDS REPLACEMENT. I SPOKE TO A TESLA EMPLOYEE AND I'M SURE YOU KNOW, BUT HE SAYS THEY ONLY WIPE AND RECYCLE THE RAM USED ON THE MCU. THAT WOULD EXPLAIN FAST FAILURES AGAIN. APPARENTLY TESLA KNOWS ABOUT THIS, I HAVE HAD MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE AND HAVE ASKED THAT THE CHIP BE REPLACED. THEY HAVE SO FAR REFUSED AND KEEP DIAGNOSING THE ISSUE WITH NO RESOLVE. BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE AT THE MACADAM SERVICE CENTER IN PORTLAND, OREGON ON OCTOBER 29TH DUE TO MCU ISSUES; THIS WAS BEFORE ANY NOTICE HAD GONE OUT! I WAS NOT EVEN AWARE OF THE ISSUE AT THIS TIME. IT WAS REBOOTING, VERY SLUGGISH, GETS 'LOST' IE KEEPS OUTDATED INFORMATION ETC. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY THE 8GB MEMORY DEVICE ISSUE. AFTER A 40 YEAR CAREER AS AN ENGINEER AND VENTURE CAPITALIST IN THE IT INDUSTRY I KNOW WHAT MEMORY FAILURE LOOKS LIKE! I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO ISSUE AND THAT IT WAS SAFE FOR ME TO DRIVE TO SF THE NEXT WEEK. I HAD MAJOR ISSUES ON THE TRIP. THE SYSTEM REBOOTED A NUMBER OF TIMES, WAS EXTREMELY SLUGGISH AND HAD DATA UPDATE ISSUES. SPECIFICALLY: -DEPART LAKE OSWEGO AT 5:30AM ON 11/23. SOON THEREAFTER THE LEFT FRONT FENDER CAMERA INFORMS ME IT IS NOT WORKING. IT DOES SO REPEATEDLY EVERY MINUTE OR SO FOR A LONG TIME. THEN ALL CAMERAS INFORM ME THEY ARE NOT WORKING. I STOP, TWICE, CLEAN ALL THE CAMERAS AND IT DOES NOT RESOLVE ANYTHING. I GIVE UP ON THE CAMERAS WORKING AND STOP USING CRUISE CONTROL -AT 12:31PM IN THE SHASTA AREA STREAMING FAILS AND THEN THE WHOLE MCU SHUTS DOWN. WHILE DRIVING IN THE RAIN I AM FORCED TO REACT AND OPEN WINDOWS TO KEEP THE WINDOWS FROM FOGGING UP WHILE DRIVING AT 70MPH. OTHIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. I HAVE UPDATED MY NHTSA COMPLAINT TO INCLUDE THESE SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS. -7:48PM 11/23, WHILE SUPERCHARGING IN EMERYVILLE THE MCU COMPLETELY FROZE. I WAS HAD TO FORCE A REBOOT. 2ND REBOOT IN ONE DAY -5:28PM 11/24 MCU CRASHES WHILE DRIVING AGAIN! HOW DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF THIS?! THIS IS THE 3RD CRASH IN 2 DAYS!. TOUCH SCREEN IS COMPLETELY BLACK MULTIPLE TIMES PER WEEK. USUALLY AT BEGINNING OF TRIPS, BUT OCCASIONALLY SUDDENLY OCCURS IN THE MIDDLE OF TRIPS. BLACK OUT CAN LAST UPWARDS OF 10 MINUTES (PER SMARTPHONE STOP WATCH). TOUCHSCREEN BLACKOUT LIMITS ACCESS TO FOG LIGHT CONTROLS, BACK UP CAMERA, GARAGE CONTROLS, PASSENGER AIRBAG STATUS INDICATOR, AND ALL AUDIBLE WARNINGS INCLUDING EMERGENCY BRAKE ALERT AND TURN SIGNAL NOISES. THE VEHICLE IS COVERED UNDER TESLA'S NEW EXTENDED WARRANTY. I REQUESTED SERVICE ON 10/17. WAS SCHEDULED TO BRING CAR IN ON 11/12 (NEXT AVAILABLE). THEY SAID IT WAS DONE ON 11/13 AFTER ONLY COMPLETING A DIAGNOSTIC AND A FIRMWARE FLASH. NO HARDWARE MODIFICATIONS WERE COMPLETED. SAME SYMPTOMS REOCCURRED ON 11/23. I CONTACTED THEM THAT SAME DAY AND THEY GAVE ME AN APPOINTMENT OF 12/18. TODAY (11/24) THEY CONTACTED ME TO RECOMMEND I CANCEL THE APPOINTMENT AS THE ISSUE IS (THEY SAY) SOFTWARE BASED AND THEY "FOUND NO ISSUES WITH THE HARDWARE" VIA REMOTE DIAGNOSTIC. MY SCREEN TURNED BLANK AND THERE WAS NO WAY TO SEE THE REAR VIEW CAMERA, THE TURNING SIGNAL, TO SET THE TEMPERATURE CONTROL DUE TO A KNOWN DEFECT OF A MEMORY CHIP. I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP WITH HISTORY OF MULTIPLE BLACK OUTS, AND THEY REFUSE TO REPLACE IT ALTHOUGH TESLA WEBSITE SAID THAT THEY WOULD
