ACCELERATOR IS GETTING STUCK REPEATEDLY IN MY 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IS STUCK I HAVE TO EITHER FORCE HARDER ON THE PEDAL OR I HAVE TO RELEASE MY FOOT AND THEN HIT THE ACCELERATOR AGAIN WITH A GREATER FORCE TO REMOVE THE PEDAL FROM THE STUCK POSITION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE HIGHLY WHEN THE PEDAL GETS RELEASED AND WITH MY GREATER FORCE ON PEDAL. I HAVE BEEN RUNNING THE VEHICLE LIKE THIS FOR SOMETIME BUT THIS ISSUE IS FREQUENTLY HAPPENING SO I WANTED TO BRING THIS ISSUE TO YOUR NOTICE AS A SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THE 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY CAR. BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE I DON'T DRIVE MY KIDS IN THIS CAR AND I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND THE PASSENGERS IN IT. *TR
OUR SON WAS DRIVING OUR 1999 CAMRY ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY WHEN ALL OF THE LIGHTS CAME ON AT ONCE-CHECK ENGINE, CHECK OIL, CHECK TIRES. THEN THERE WAS A DING SOUND AND A LOUD POP. THE CAR SHUT OFF. HE WAS ABLE TO MOVE TO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY AND EXITED THE CAR. AS HE WENT TO OPEN THE HOOD HE REALIZED IT WAS ON FIRE. HE CALLED 911. THE RESPONDING STATE TROOPER TRIED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE BUT COULDN'T. BY THE TIME THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED THE CAR WAS FULLY ENGULFED. WE HAVE PROPERLY MAINTAINED OUR CAMRY AT OUR LOCAL GARAGE, WHO HAS THE RECORDS ON FILE. LUCKILY ONLY OBJECTS WERE LOST, OUR SON IS FINE. *TR
EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS. RECALL NUMBER 09E025000. CAN YOU PLEASE LET ME KNOW CAN I GET RECALL FOR MY HEADLIGHTS? I AM NOT GETTING GOOD LIGHTING. *TR
AT TIMES WHEN I COME TO A STOP (TRAFFIC, STOP LIGHT, STOP SIGN, ETC.) OR SLOW DOWN IN MY 1999 TOYOTA SOLARA I HAVE TROUBLE ACCELERATING FROM THE IDLE SPEED(S). WHEN I PRESS DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL TO ACCELERATE IT STICKS. IT WON'T MOVE UNLESS I APPLY MORE PRESSURE WHICH CAUSES MY CAR TO JERK OR "PEEL OUT". THIS SITUATION DOES NOT OCCUR AT EVERY ACCELERATION BUT DOES OCCUR FREQUENTLY. WHEN THIS SITUATION HAPPENS I DO NOT FEEL SAFE. THERE HAS BEEN A FEW OCCURRENCES WHERE THE ROADS WHERE WET AND I EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. WHEN MY CAR FINALLY ACCELERATED THE TIRES" SPUN OUT" WHICH CAUSED MY CAR TO MOVE VIOLENTLY. THIS INCIDENT IS NOT SIMILAR TO THAT OF WHICH IS IN THE TOYOTA GAS PEDAL RECALL BUT I URGE YOU TO LOOK INTO THIS MATTER TO SEE IF IT SHOULD ALSO BE INCLUDED. *TR

I WAS TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF 45 MPH, WHEN ANOTHER CAR RAN A STOP SIGN. I T-BONED THE OTHER CAR AND MY AIR BAG DID NOT GO OFF. MY BREAST BONE WAS BROKEN DUE TO MY BODY'S IMPACT WITH THE STEERING WHEEL. I AM ONLY REPORTING THIS INCIDENT NOW BECAUSE OF AN ARTICLE I READ ABOUT AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOYING DURING ACCIDENTS. *TR
1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE TRAVELING, THE DRIVER CLAIMED TO HAVE HEARD A NOISE AND LOST THE ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE. *BF THE DRIVER WENT OFF THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD, STRUCK A MEDIAN BARRIER, CAME BACK ACROSS THREE LANES, WENT OFF THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD, STRUCK A GUARDRAIL AND THEN CAME TO REST PARTIALLY IN THE RIGHT LANE. ACCORDING TO THE WRECKER THE DRIVER, THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE STEERING. HOWEVER, THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE THAT WAS NOT A RESULT OF THE CRASH AND THAT COULD HAVE POSSIBLY CAUSED A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING. I HAVE A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY, LE, THAT THE GAS PEDAL CONTINUALLY STICKS. I HAVE TO HOLD THE GAS PEDAL WHEN IT STICKS AND PRESS DOWN, SOMETIMES HARD, ON THE GAS PEDAL TO CONTINUE FORWARD. MY DAUGHTER HAS DRIVEN THE CAR AND ALMOST WAS REAR ENDED WHEN SHE COULDN'T GET THE CAR TO MOVE. *TR
I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKES 3 TIMES SINCE I BOUGHT THIS CAR. ROTORS AND CALIPERS HAVE ALL BEEN REPLACED 3 TIMES. CAR NOW HAS ABOUT 130,000 MILES. LAST REPAIRMAN SAID THERE WAS EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE BRAKES, BUT THE CAR IS NOT DRIVEN IN ANY SALT WATER. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH APPROACHING A STOP SIGN WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ROLL SUDDENLY AS WELL. WHEN THE BRAKES WERE ENGAGED, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SLOW DOWN SO THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL AND THEN INTO PARK WHICH RESULTED TO THE VEHICLE COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE ENGINE RESTARTED AND THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMALLY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHEN DRIVING 40 MPH AND ABOVE. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 60 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE EOR SENSOR, EOR SOLENOID AND EOR MODULE WERE REPLACED ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 65,000. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING AT 2 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO A PARKING SIGN. THE CONTACT SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE INSURANCE COMPANY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE BUT NO CAUSE OF FAILURE COULD BE DETERMINED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT ASSIST WITH REPAIR EXPENSES. EXCESSIVE CORROSION AND RUSTING IN THE UNDER CARRIAGE OF THE VEHICLE. EXHAUST RUSTED ALL THE WAY THROUGH. FRONT FLEX PIPE RUSTED. CAT CONVERTER RUSTED . MUFFLER AND BACK EXHAUST PIPE RUSTED. *TR
I HAVE A "1999" TOYOTA CAMRY THAT ON THE WAY TO WORK YESTERDAY HAD THE ENGINE BEGIN RACING AND THE BRAKES WERE BARELY ABLE TO STOP IT. I HAD TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK WHILE THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RACE. I GOT OUT AND CHECKED FLOOR MATS AND WORKED THE GAS PEDAL BY HAND AND THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RACE. I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND TRIED RESTARTING IT AND THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN RACING AGAIN. I MANAGED TO MOVE IT OFF THE ROAD AND INTO A GAS STATION AND HAD SOMEONE FROM INSIDE COME OUT JUST TO WITNESS IT AS I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT WAS HAPPENING. I OPENED THE HOOD AND MANUALLY WORKED WHAT I CALL THE THROTTLE CONTROL AND WAS ABLE TO ROTATE IN BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RACE. ONLY TURNING THE ENGINE OFF WOULD STOP THE RACING. I REPEATED THESE STEPS AT LEAST 3 TIMES AND UPON THE LAST ENGINE START UP THE ENGINE IDLED NORMALLY. I HAD DRIVEN FOR A SHORT TIME BEFORE AND I FEEL CERTAIN THAT THE SPEED CONTROL WAS CONTROLLING THE SPEED UNTIL I TOOK IT OFF. AT FIRST THOUGHT MY BRAKES WERE BAD AS THEY WEREN'T STOPPING THE CAR WELL. THEN I NOTICED IT WAS ACTUALLY ACCELERATING ON IT'S ON. I UNDERSTAND THIS WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN ON THIS YEAR OF VEHICLE AND THAT IS WHAT THE LOCAL SERVICE PEOPLE TOLD ME WHEN I CALLED THEM. HOWEVER, I AM VERY WARY THAT THERE IS AN ELECTRONIC ASPECT TO THE PROBLEM AND EVEN IF IT IS SOME OTHER PROBLEM KNOWN OR NOT KNOWN TO TOYOTA IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM TO HAVE AND NEVER TO HAVE KNOWN ABOUT MYSELF. *TR
TL*-THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA SOLARA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURY TO THE HEAD DUE TO THE WINDSHIELD IMPACT. THE DRIVER SEATBELT WAS ENGAGED WITH A DEPLOYMENT OF THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THERE WAS NO MENTION OF A POLICE REPORT FILED OF THE INCIDENT. THE CAUSE OF FAILURE HAD NOT BEEN DETERMINED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 190,000. UPDATED 11/05/10. *LJ
INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) 1999 TOYOTA LE V6 VIN [XXX] MY DAUGHTER WAS IN A FRONTAL IMPACT ACCIDENT WITH THE VEHICLE. WHILE I DON'T KNOW THE PRECISE SPEED AT THE TIME OF IMPACT, THE SPEED LIMIT IN THAT AREA IS 35 MILES PER HOUR. I WANT AN INVESTIGATION AS TO WHY THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. *TR
1999 TOYOTA SOLARA IN EXCELLENT CONDITION YESTERDAY AS I WAS RETURNING FROM THE GROCERY STORE I TRIED TO START MY CAR. THE ENGINE TURNED OVER BUT WAS RUNNING ERRATICALLY. WHEN I TRIED TURNING IT OFF TO RESTART IT, IT WOULD NOT STOP RUNNING. IT MADE A STACCATO SOUND AND RAN FAST AND OUT OF CONTROL UNTIL IT DRAINED THE BATTERY AND STOPPED. WHITE SMOKE POURED OUT AND A TERRIBLE SMELL ACCOMPANIED THIS. WHEN I HAD IT TOWED TO THE MECHANIC WHO WORKS ON MY CAR, HE SAID HE HAD ANOTHER TOYOTA THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. HE HAS REPLACED THE STARTER MOTOR, AND THE BATTERY IS HOLDING A CHARGE. I BELIEVE THAT IF TWO CARS IN THIS ONE GARAGE HAD THIS PROBLEM, IT MAY BE MORE THAN A COINCIDENCE. I AM NOT SURPRISED TO HAVE TO REPLACE A STARTER MOTOR, BUT THIS WAS A FRIGHTENING EVENT AND COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE IF I WERE NOT IN A SAFE NEIGHBORHOOD SETTING. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE STARTER MOTORS IN OTHER CARS, BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD A SITUATION LIKE THIS ONE WHEN THEY HAVE NEEDED REPLACEMENT.
DESPITE BEING REGULARLY MAINTAINED, VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF, NOT ABUSED, AND LESS THAN AVERAGE USE (AVERAGE 6700 MI/YR), THIS TOYOTA CAMRY (PURCHASED NEW FROM A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA) HAS NEVER WORKED PROPERLY FOR LONG. THE FACTORY-INSTALLED CD/CASSETTE/RADIO SYSTEM HAS BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES, AND NOW THE CD PLAYER PART YET AGAIN DOES NOT WORK AT ALL. AT ONLY ABOUT 10000 MILES, THE AIR FLOW RATIO SENSOR AND MANIFOLD HAD TO BE REPLACED. THEN THERE IS THE FACT THAT ABOUT 95% OF THE TIME, THE CAR WILL NOT START WITHOUT THE ACCELERATOR BEING DEPRESSED AND HELD FOR 1 MIN, AND EVEN THEN THE ENGINE ALWAYS SOUNDS WEAK AND ONLY REACHES ABOUT 500 RPM UNTIL PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR AGAIN. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE ODOMETER READ 16603 MILES. THAT WAS WHEN THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE WAS FIRST REPLACED. THE SITUATION SEEMED TO IMPROVE, UNTIL 34800 MILES, WHEN THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH IT NOT STARTING AND BEING VERY WEAK RESUMED. AT 35394 MILES THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE WAS REPLACED FOR A 2ND TIME. AT 47000 MILES THE SAME PROBLEMS RESUMED. AT 49180 MILES, THE CAR WOULD (AS USUAL) NOT START UNLESS THE ACCELERATOR WAS PRESSED FOR 1 MIN. THEN IT RAN AT ONLY 500 RPM. AS IT WAS THEN BEING DRIVEN OUT OF AN ALLEY, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY SPONTANEOUSLY BOOSTED TO 1200 RPM, NEARLY CAUSING A COLLISION. THIS TYPE OF IMPETUOUS ACCELERATION STARTED FREQUENTLY OCCURRING. TOYOTA REFUSED TO HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM, ONLY SAYING TO USE PREMIUM GASOLINE, WHICH PROVED TO NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. NOW THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OF THE CAR HAS COLLAPSED THREE TIMES AT 72173 MI, 75009 MI, AND TODAY (2010-03-11) AT 75024 MI. THE DISHONESTY OF TOYOTA PERSONNEL IS SEEN IN ITS REFUSING TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM AND EARLIER IN FRAUDULENTLY CANCELING THE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM THAT WAS PART OF THE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE AFTER THE CAR WAS PAID FOR AND ITS REFUSAL TO RESPOND TO WRITTEN COMMUNICATION. *TR
ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, MY 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY (4 CYLINDER) HAS EXPERIENCED SUDDEN UNINTENDED ENGINE ACCELERATION. I DETECTED THAT THIS SEEMS TO OCCUR WHEN I AM COASTING TOWARDS A LIGHT BEFORE A HILL, THAT THE ENGINE WILL SPEED UP ON ITS OWN AND BEGIN ACCELERATING THE CAR. APPLYING PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE STOPPED THE CAR IN MOST CASES, BUT ONCE I ENDED UP ACCELERATING AND COULD NOT STOP THE CAR UNTIL I HIT SOME BUSHES ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IT ALSO HAPPENS WHEN I WAS MAKING A TURN ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THAT THE ACCELERATION INCREASED ON ITS OWN. I AM REPORTING THIS NOW AS WITH THE NEWS ABOUT TOYOTA CAMRY'S, I BELIEVE THE 1999 MODELS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE LAST DATE THAT THIS OCCURRED TO ME WAS FEB 28, 2010, BUT IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING A FEW TIMES PER YEAR FOR FIVE YEARS. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 1999 TOYOTA SOLARA, HOME IN THE RAIN GOING 50 MPH WHEN A STREET LIGHT TURNED YELLOW, I STARTED TO PUT ON MY BRAKES, BUT THE CAR WAS NOT SLOWING DOWN IN TIME TO STOP BEFORE THE INTERSECTION, SO I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKES AND JUST WENT THROUGH THE YELLOW LIGHT. I FELT THAT IF I WAS DRIVING ANY OTHER ONE OF MY CARS THAT I WOULD HAVE HAD PLENTY TIME TO STOP. WHEN YOU TAKE THE FOOT OF THE GAS ON THIS CAR IT DOES NOT SLOW DOWN AUTOMATICALLY LIKE OTHER VEHICLES. WHEN I FIRST GOT THIS 1999 TOYOTA SOLARA I GOT A TICKET FOR NOT STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN. THERE TO I ALSO THOUGH I HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO STOP, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THE ENGINE IS FIGHTING AGAINST THE BRAKE WHEN I TRY TO STOP. SINCE THEN WHEN I COME UP TO A STOP SIGN I START BRAKING MUCH FURTHER BACK THAN I US TO. EVEN WHEN I'M STOPPED AT 700 RPM, THE CARS SEEM TO WANT TO START GOING. I ALWAYS THE FIRST ONE TO START OFF WHEN A STOP LIGHT , BECAUSE AS SOON AS I TAKE MY FOOT OF THE GAS THE CARS GOES 5 MPH WITH OUT EVEN PUTTING MY FOOT ON THE GAS. THE DRIVE-ABILITY OF THIS CAR IS THE SAME AS OWNING A 1970'S PUMPED OUT MUSCLE CAR. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED THAT ON THE NEWER CAMRY BASED TOYOTA CARS THAT THE DISC'S ON THE DISC BRAKES ARE TWICE AS BIG AS MY SOLARA'S DISK BRAKES, WHICH MEANS TO ME THAT TOYOTA KNOWS THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THESE BRAKES. TO THE NOVICE DRIVER I WOULD SAY THAT THE SOLARA IS A DANGEROUS CAR TO DRIVE. *TR
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: THIS IS NOT A FORMAL COMPLAINT. IT IS A MATTER OF CONCERN THAT MIGHT BE SHARED BY OTHER1999 TOYOTA OWNERS. WHILE THE NEWS IS EXTENSIVE IN REPORTING THE ISSUES INVOLVED IN UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION OF SELECT LATER MODEL TOYOTA AUTOMOBILES, I BELIEVE AN ASPECT OF AN EARLIER CAMRY HAS THE POTENTIAL OF CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY FOR WHICH I HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHEN THE ACCELERATOR (GAS PEDAL) WILL NOT DEPRESS AS INTENDED. SEVERAL ATTEMPTS ARE NECESSARY TO HAVE THE CAR RESPOND TO MY DESIRE TO INCREASE SPEED. THIS SITUATION IS THE OPPOSITE OF THAT NOW BEING PUBLICIZED; HOWEVER, IT IS EQUALLY DANGEROUS. FOR EXAMPLE, SHOULD I FIND MYSELF IN A SITUATION WHERE I NEED TO ACCELERATE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT, I HAVE DOUBTS AS TO THE RESPONSE OF THE CAR, THAT IS, WILL IT INCREASE IN SPEED SUFFICIENTLY IN TIME TO AVOID A POTENTIAL COLLISION. IT IS MY INTENT TO HAVE MY SERVICE STATION INSPECT THE CAR FOR ANY OBVIOUS DEFICIENCIES. YET, I FEEL THIS SITUATION, IN LIGHT OF THE UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATION PROBLEM NOW GARNERING THE HEADLINES, MIGHT BE BEING NEGLECTED BY TOYOTA. IF IT IS A DESIGN FLAW, IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO ADDRESS AND FIX IT. *TR
MY CAMRY LE 4 CYLINDER IS EXPERIENCING STICKY GAS PEDAL FROM TIME TO TIME. IT IS NOT STICKING TO THE CARPET. IT HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 10 TIMES SO FAR. THE PROBLEM HAPPENS WHEN MOVING FROM COMPLETE STOP POSITION AT LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. *TR
I DRIVE A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. MY CAR'S GAS PEDAL ALSO HAS SIMILAR PROBLEM AS STATED IN THE RECENT RECALLS. THE PROBLEM OCCURS MORE OFTEN WHEN WAITING AT A STOP SIGNAL/SIGN AND WHILE TRYING TO ACCELERATE FROM ZERO. THE GAS PEDAL GETS STUCK AND REQUIRES ME DEPRESS THE PEDAL HARDER RESULTING IN SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND AFTER CAUSING SOME FRUSTRATION FOR DRIVERS BEHIND ME. I EVEN CALLED UP TOYOTA AND THEY ARE STATING SINCE MY CAR IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL THEY WOULD NOT FIX IT UNDER THE RECALL. HOWEVER, I THINK MY GAS PEDAL PROBLEM IS THE INITIAL PHASE OF THE OVERALL PROBLEM AND IS VERY SIMILAR TO PROBLEMS STATED BY MANY CONSUMERS WITH THIS ISSUE. WAS INCHING INTO A PARKING SPACE, TAPPING THE BRAKES, GOING AT AN INCLINE (UPHILL) TO PARK. SUDDENLY WITH ABOUT 8-10 INCHES TO GO THE CAR LITERALLY LUNGED FORWARD ON ITS OWN. SLAMMING WITH A HUGE BOOM INTO A CONCRETE POLL. THE BRAKES WERE PUMPING AS ALL OF THIS HAPPENED UNTIL FINALLY THE ACCELERATION CEASED. HAD THE POLL NOT BEEN THERE I WOULD HAVE WENT THROUGH THE FRONT WINDOW OF THE RESTAURANT OR FLATTEN ANY PERSON WALKING BY. THE MANAGER OF THE RESTAURANT WITNESSED THE ENTIRE EVENT. HE SAID THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT IN HIS MIND FROM THE CREEPING INTO THE SPACE, WITH ONLY ABOUT 8-10 INCHES TO GO, TO A SONIC LIKE BOOM AND THE HUGE LUNGE FORWARD OF THE VEHICLE, THE THROTTLE HAD TO BE WIDE OPEN, THEN STUCK THERE. IT WAS A POWERFUL ENOUGH CRASH THAT IT BROKE THE FRAME AROUND THE HEADLIGHT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. *TR
NOT SEVERE - BUT THIS IS AN OLDER TOYOTA AND I WANT THE PROBLEM LOGGED. MY CAR DOES "LURCH" IN SUDDEN ACCELERATIONS, BUT IT HAS NEVER BEEN SEVERE. I HAVE ONLY NOTICED WHEN I AM STOPPED AT A LIGHT, AND IN REVERSE. WHEN I AM STOPPED WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR ENGINE SUDDENLY REVS. BUT I'M ALWAYS CLAMPED DOWN HARD ON THE BRAKE, SO THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A PROBLEM THERE. WHILE IN REVERSE, I HAVE ALSO HAD SUDDEN ACCELERATION, BUT MINOR AND IT ONLY LASTS FOR A SECOND. BUT IT DOES HAPPEN. SINCE IT WASN'T HAPPENING ALL THE TIME, THE DEALERSHIP COULD NEVER FIND A PROBLEM WITH IT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING TOWARD A RED LIGHT APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH, SHE PUT HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD AND ACCELERATED. THE DRIVER PRESSED HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH MUCH FORCE IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE PASSENGER THOUGHT THE DRIVER HAD ENGAGED THE ACCELERATED PEDAL SINCE THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE; HOWEVER, SHE WAS ENGAGING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 109,890.

THE VEHICLE HAS OVER 100,000 MILES ON IT. IF YOU TAP IT, WHEN IT STICKS, IT WILL COME UNSTUCK. I BELIEVED THE CAR WAS GETTING OLD, MY CAR, BUT NOW MY WIFE COMPLAINS IT HAPPENS TO HER WHEN SHE DRIVES IT. *TR
I BOUGHT MY CAMRY BRAND NEW AND HAVE ALWAYS KEPT UP WITH THE REGULAR MAINTENANCE SCHEDULED. HOWEVER, OVER THE YEARS I'VE HAD TO HAVE THE CHARCOAL CANISTER REPLACED AT LEAST THREE TIMES AND VALVES REPLACED TWICE. ON OCT. 4TH WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, WITH NO FOREWARNING, I HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND FOLLOWED BY A PLUME OF WHITE/BLUE SMOKE. THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY SHUT OFF AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER ON THE SHOULDER IN TIME TO AVOID AND ACCIDENT. THE RESULTING TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE CAUSED ME TO HAVE TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED. NOW I'M DISCOVERING THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH MY KIND OF ENGINE AND IT WAS QUIETLY SETTLED WITH THOSE WHO HAVE THE 2000 YEAR ENGINES. MY FIRST COMPLAINT IS THE CRUISE CONTROL ON MY VEHICLE. WHEN I SET IT TO OVER 50MPH AND THEN TRY TO TURN IT OFF, MY PEDAL STICKS A LITTLE AND ACTS LIKE IT DOESN'T WANT TO RELEASE. SHE ATTEMPTED TO PURCHASE NEW FLOOR MATS; HOWEVER, THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WERE NONE AVAILABLE FOR HER YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLE. THE FAILURE ALSO OCCURRED THE DAY PRIOR; ALTHOUGH, THE ACCELERATION WAS NOT AS HIGH, THEREFORE, THE CONTACT THOUGHT IT WAS IDLING TO HIGH. AT ABOUT 3 PM I WAS DRIVING NORTH ON THE ON RAMP OF ROUTE 15 NORTH AT MIRA MESA. SUDDENLY MY CAR ACCELERATED AND WOULD NOT STOP. I MOVED TO THE RIGHT WHERE THERE WAS ROOM. AND DESPITE PUSHING HARD ON THE BRAKE, I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR. I MOVED TO THE GUARD RAIL HOPING TO SLOW THE CAR, WHICH IL DID, BUT THE CAR BOUNCED OFF THE RAIL AND SIDE SWIPED A WHITE LEXUS. THEN THE CAR CAME TO A STOP. A WORKMAN SAW THE ACCIDENT AND CONFIRMED THE PATTERN OF WHAT OCCURRED. HE CHECKED WITH ME AND THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER CAR AND WE BOTH SAID THERE WAS NO INJURY. HE REFUSED TO IDENTIFY HIMSELF. BOTH CARS WERE ABLE TO DRIVE AWAY WITHOUT DIFFICULTY. WHEN I GOT HOME I CHECKED THAT THE FLOOR MATS WERE IN THE PROPER PLACE AND NOT NEAR THE ACCELERATOR. I FEEL THAT THERE WAS A DEFECT IN THE OPERATING SYSTEM OF THE CAR TO CAUSE THIS SUDDEN ACCELERATION. *TR

THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 160,000.
1999 TOYOTA CAMRY 4 CYLINDER WITH 83,500 MILES (ONE OWNER) BLEW A PISTON THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK AS A RESULT OF ACCELERATING FROM ABOUT 69 TO 73 MPH ON A BUSY TURNPIKE, COMPLETELY DESTROYING THE ENGINE AND SENDING BLACK SMOKE AND OIL ALL OVER THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING TO CORRECT OR REPAIR IT, BECAUSE UNTIL THIS CURRENT RECALL, I VIEWED IT MORE AS A NUISANCE PROBLEM. THUS FAR IT HAS NEVER GOTTEN STUCK IN THE DEPRESSED POSITION. ACCORDING TO THE CURRENT TERMS OF THE RECALL, MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION RELEASED TODAY ABOUT THIS CURRENT RECALL LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT MY STICKY ACCELERATOR MAY BE RELATED TO THE RECALL AND CERTAINLY WARRANTS INVESTIGATION. *TR

ON SIX OCCASIONS IN THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA I HAVE EXPERIENCED TIRE FAILURE DUE TO TREAD SEPARATION. ON TWO OF THESE OCCASIONS I HAVE BEEN ON THE FREEWAY AND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF ROAD ON FOUR OTHERS I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE COMPANY WHERE I PURCHASED THE TIRES. THE TIRES INVOLVED WITH THESE FAILURES HAVE BEEN ON TWO SEPARATE CARS BOTH OF THEM ARE 99 TOYOTA CAMRY'S. THE TIRES ARE THE SAME MANUFACTURE AND MODEL BUT DIFFERENT SIZES. THE COMPANY WHERE I PURCHASED THESE TIRES FROM HAS WORKED WITH ME AND HAS REPLACED THESE TIRES ON ALL OCCASIONS. I AM WRITING THIS COMPLAINT NOW BECAUSE I HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH TWO TIRES ON ONE OF MY CAMRY'S AND ONE TIRE ON THE OTHER CAMRY AND I FEEL THAT THESE TIRES ARE NOT SAFE. *TR

THE OUTER BELT OF THE FRONT TIRE SEPARATED WHILE TRAVELING ON INTERSTATE 15 NEAR BAKER, CA , TOWARDS LAS VEGAS, AT 7:30 PM. WITH GREAT DIFFICULTY, I WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR AND AVOID A MAJOR ACCIDENT IN THAT BUSY HIGHWAY. I RECEIVED A CITATION FROM THE HIGHWAY PATROL BECAUSE I HAD TO LEAVE THE CAR ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. I HAD TO PAY FOR A TOW TRUCK TO REMOVE THE CAR. THE CAR WAS DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS BY THE LIBERTY MUTUAL'S APPRAISER. I LATER FOUND OUT THAT THESE TIRES HAD BEEN RECALLED ON NOV '06, BUT NEITHER PEP BOYS (THE SELLER) NOR THE TIRE MANUFACTURER, COOPER TIRES, HAD EVER CONTACTED ME ABOUT THE RECALL. MOREOVER, PEP BOYS HAD FAILED TO INFORM ME OF THE SERIOUS CRASH RISK OF THESE TIRES, EVEN WHEN I TOOK MY CAR ON MAR 30TH, 2008 FOR TIRE ROTATION !!! BOTH COMPANIES PEP BOYS AND COPPER TIRES HAVE BEEN UNRESPONSIVE TO MY COMPLAINTS AND CLAIMING THE OTHER AS THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY IN THIS CASE. BY THE WAY, I'M STILL WITHOUT A CAR. *TR
