TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO THE FRONT END OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. HE SUSTAINED MODERATE INJURIES TO HIS NECK AND SHOULDERS FROM THE CRASH. THE CONTACT HAS A COPY OF THE POLICE REPORT AND PICTURES OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 100,000.
ENGINE BLEW OUT ON FREEWAY. ENGINE FAILURE DIAGNOSED AS SLUDGE BUILD UP LEADING TO THROWN ROD AND CRANKSHAFT. ROD BUSTED THROUGH CRANKCASE. MY 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY WAS ONE OF TOYOTA'S FLAWED ENGINE DESIGNS SUFFERING FROM A KNOWN OIL GEL BUILD UP PROBLEM - *5S-FE FOUR CYLINDER AND 1MZ-FE V-6 ENGINES. *TR
EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM ON 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY COMPONENT: STRUCTURE:DOOR ASSEMBLY:LATCHES AND LOCKS POWER DOOR LOCK SYSTEM CAN FAILED, CAUSING THE CONTACTS TO "WELD", AND RESULTING IN DOOR LOCK SOLENOID DAMAGE, WITH FAILURE OF THE DOOR TO LOCK OR UNLOCK, EVEN UNDER MANUAL OPERATION. CONSEQUENCE: IF THE DOOR FAILS TO OPEN AFTER ECU FAILURE, VEHICLE OCCUPANTS WOULD HAVE INCREASED DIFFICULTY EXITING THE VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY. *TR
THE BRAKES DO NOT SEEM TO WORK PROPERLY WHEN THE CAR IS ON A DECLINE; THIS IS PARTICULARLY A PROBLEM WHEN THE ROAD IS WET. SOMETIMES IT SEEMS AS IF THE BRAKES DO NOT WANT TO WORK. MY MECHANIC HAS TWICE THOROUGHLY CHECKED THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND REPLACED WORN PARTS, BUT HE IS UNABLE TO LOCATE ANY PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM. *TR
ANEW SET OF GOODYEAR VIVA, P195/70R14 WAS PURCHASED AT WALMART SORE 1195, WAVELAND, MS ON 5/8/08. I NOTICED A PRONOUNCED PULL TO THE LEFT AND ON 5/12/08 I TOOK THE CAR TO LEGGETT'S TIRE & AUTO FOR ALIGNMENT. AFTER THE ALIGNMENT PULL TO THE LEFT WAS STILL PRESENT. I RETURNED TO LEGGETT'S AND AFTER CHECKING THE ALIGNMENT, I WAS ADVISED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT IN THE ALIGNMENT BUT WAS DUE TO A TIRE PULL. I WENT BACK TO WALMART AND AFTER CHECKING THE BALANCE THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TIRES. I HAVE ROTATED TIRES ABOUT EVERY OTHER OIL CHANGE AND THE PULL TO THE LEFT IS PRESENT AFTER EVERY OTHER OIL CHANGE. I HAVE HAD ALIGNMENT DONE FOR THE THIRD TIME RECENTLY AT A& A AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR IN OCEAN SPRINGS, MS AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE PULL WAS NOT IN THE ALIGNMENT BUT WAS A TIRE PULL WHICH WOULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO SEPARATION. I WENT TO WALMART STORE 2715 IN D'IBERVILLE TO EXPRESS MY COMPLAINT ABOUT THE DEFECT IN THE TIRES AND WAS TOLD THEY WOULD RESEARCH IT. DOT CODES ARE: RIGHT FRONT, M6RWH6HR1408; LEFT FRONT, M6RWH6HR_____; LEFT REAR, M6RWH6HR1608;RIGHT REAR, M6RWH6HR_____. *TR
MY 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY STARTED BLOWING BLUE SMOKE OUT OF THE TAIL PIPE. THIS WAS AFTER REGULAR OIL CHANGES AT 3,000 MILES. FINALLY, WHILE ON A BUSINESS TRIP AND AFTER OIL WAS CHANGED, MY ENGINE STARTED MAKING A LOUD CLANKING NOISE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I HAD A LOCAL MECHANIC LOOK AT THE ENGINE, WHO STATE THE ENGINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I THEN PAID TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED 200 MILES TO MY HOUSE WHERE MY MECHANIC ALSO STATED THE ENGINE WAS BLOWN. I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING THE INTERNET FOR OVER A YEAR TO FIND A COST EFFECTIVE ENGINE WHEN AT LAST I FOUND A WEB SITE THAT EXPLAINS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD WITH SLUDGE OIL PROBLEMS CAUSING ENGINE FAILURE. WHY HAS THE NHTSA NOT ISSUED ANY RECALL? I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT THE NHTSA IS NOT LOOKING OUT FOR THE CONSUMER? WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO GET SOME HELP FOR THE HARD WORKING CONSUMER AGAINST THE AUTO GIANTS WHO KNOW GOOD AND WELL THEY HAD A VERY SILENT CLASS ACTION NOTIFICATION WHICH DID NOT MAKE IT TO THE MAJORITY OF THE CONSUMERS. THAT ACTION MIGHT BE GOOD FOR THE BOARD MEMBERS AND STOCKHOLDERS BUT ISN'T THE NHTSA SUPPOSED TO LOOK OUT FOR THE CONSUMER. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE TRAVELING AT SPEEDS OF 45 MPH THERE WAS AN UNUSUALLY LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER ADVISED THE SUSPENSION STABILIZER BAR HAD FAILED. THE DEALER MADE REPAIRS TO THE STABILIZER BAR, STRUTS AND SUSPENSION SYSTEM. THE FAILURE RECURRED WITHIN TWO YEARS AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER ADVISED THE MOTOR MOUNTS WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED, AS WELL AS OTHER UNKNOWN COMPONENTS WITHIN THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 160,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
MY CAMRY SHOWED THE EXACT 3 SIGNS OF OIL GEL LIST IN SETTLED CLASS ACTION SUIT: EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION, BLUE SMOKE, & ENGINE LIGHT ON. SETTLED CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT SAYS TOYOTA SHOULD FIX/PAY. TOYOTA INC. DENIED CLAIM. CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT CLEARLY INCLUDES MY 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY 4CYL. TOYOTA SHOULD AUTHORIZE THE $3000 OF REPAIRS NEEDED ON MY CAMRY AND SHOULD PAY FOR THE REPAIRS AS THEY WERE DIRECTED TO BY A COURT OF LAW. I'M JUST GLAD I NOTICED THE 3 SIGNS OF OIL GET & BROUGHT IT TO A NEARBY DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT BEFORE SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAPPENED TO MY FAMILY. IN MINNESOTA LAST WEEK, ONE CAMRY-OWNING FAMILY WAS NOT AS FORTUNATE: DURING RUSH-HOUR ON ONE OF MINNESOTA'S BUSIEST HIGHWAYS, A TOYOTA CAMRY CAME TO A FULL STOP AND WAS REAR-ENDED BY A SEMI. AS A RESULT OF INJURIES SUSTAINED WHEN THE FAMILY'S CAMRY WAS REAR-ENDED, A 4 YEAR OLD GIRL DIED. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT CAMRY WAS ONE OF THE CAMRYS COVERED IN THE OIL GEL LAWSUIT. I DO KNOW THAT IF IT'S ONE OF THE TOYOTA CAMRYS THAT HAS ENGINE DAMAGE THAT, IF UNDETECTED BY OWNER, WILL CAUSE THE ENGINE TO SEIZE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. RE: TOYOTA CAMRY ENGINE FAILURE ON 12/21/07 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY LE DECEMBER 31, 2007 DEAR SIR, ON DECEMBER 21, 2007 AT 11:30AM PT, MY WIFE KIM LY NGUYEN DROVE OUR 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY LE ON THE 405 SOUTH FREEWAY. AS SHE WAS ABOUT TO PASS THE BRISTOL ST. EXIT IN COSTA MESA, MY WIFE SUDDENLY HEARD AN UNUSUAL NOISY SOUND AND DETECTED THE STRONG SCENT OF OIL AND GASOLINE LEAKING FROM THE ENGINE. IMMEDIATELY, MY WIFE MANEUVERED OUR CAR TO THE RIGHT-HAND SHOULDER OF THE FREEWAY. ONCE MY WIFE PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, THE CAR ENGINE SUDDENLY EXPERIENCED COMPLETE FAILURE AND WOULD NOT RE-START. OUR CAR WAS TOWED BY 21ST CENTURY INSURANCE TO ACCU AUTO SERVICE (23253 MADERO #A-104, MISSION VIEJO, CA 92691) FOR REPAIR. SINCE WE ARE HEAVILY DEPENDENT ON OUR CAR TO COMMUTE TO WORK EVERY DAY, IT WAS CRUCIAL THAT WE RECEIVED IMMEDIATE SERVICE ON OUR CAR. AFTER A DIAGNOSTIC EXAM, ACCU AUTO SERVICE DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN AND TOTAL FAILURE (PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PICTURES) AND WAS COMPLETELY REPLACED AND SERVICED. SINCE WE BOUGHT OUR TOYOTA CAMRY LE ON 4/10/99, IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY THROUGH THE ?GOLD SEAL MECHANICAL BREAKDOWN SERVICES CONTRACT LIMITED, AND WE ARE HOPING THAT YOU CAN HELP US WITH A REIMBURSEMENT OF OUR REPAIR COSTS. MOTOR REGULATORS FOR THE WINDOWS ARE FAILING. LR REGULATOR CASTLED HINGE PIN MAL-FORMED AND DISLODGED FROM THE ASSEMBLY. POWER WINDOW WAS THEN NON-FUNCTIONAL AND WINDOW WOULD FALL WHEN MANUALLY RAISED UP, CREATING A SECURITY ISSUE, AND POTENTIAL WEATHER ISSUE. POWER WINDOW REGULATOR HAD TO BE REPLACED. *TR
3 OUT OF 4 MOTOR REGULATORS FOR THE WINDOWS ARE FAILING. MASTER SWITCH FOR WINDOWS IS ALSO FAILING. *TR
SINCE 2007 I HAVE NOTICED SOME TYPE OF ENGINE DIFFICULTY WITH THE TOYOTA. THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF WHILE RUNNING (IT IS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.) ALSO, ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY RECEIVE TOO HIGH A CHARGE RESULTING IN COMPUTER SYSTEM OVERHEATING. I HAVE REPLACED BOTH ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY SEVERAL TIMES, MUCH MORE THAN NECESSARY AND PROBLEM REMAINS WITH THE OBD SYSTEM. THIS ALSO CAUSES ENGINE TO HAVE SURGES OF POWER WHILE DRIVING AFFECTING CRUISE CONTROL... I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS ALSO A PROBLEM RELATIVE TO CURRENT TOYOTA ISSUES-ONLINE SOMEONE HAS A 2002 SOLARA WITH SAME PROBLEM. MY PARENTS HAVE 01 SOLARA-NO PROBLEMS REPORTED. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE TWO ACCIDENTS THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED. I PURCHASED MY TOYOTA CAMRY IN 2003 AND LOVED IT. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR 57 YEARS AND NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT. ON OCTOBER 11, 2007, I DROVE UP MY DAUGHTER'S DRIVEWAY, CAME TO A STOP (MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE) AND WAS PUTTING MY CAR IN PARK WHEN IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED INTO AND CRASHED THRU THE CLOSED GARAGE DOOR! I FINALLY CAME TO A STOP AFTER CRASHING INTO THE HOT WATER HEATER AND A WORK TABLE, PUTTING A BIG HOLE IN THE WALL BEHIND IT. A CABINET FELL ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR AND THE BROKEN GARAGE DOOR CLOSED ONTO THE REAR OF MY CAR. LUCKILY I WAS NOT INJURED BEYOND BRUISING AND STIFFNESS. MORE IMPORTANTLY, I AM RELIEVED MY GRANDSON WAS NOT IN THE CAR WITH ME, OR WORSE, HAD NOT COME INTO THE GARAGE WHEN I HONKED FOR HIM. THIS HAPPENED IN SECONDS AND WAS TERRIFYING. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE THE ENTIRE TIME! TWO YEARS LATER, ON JUNE 16, 2009, I DROVE INTO A JEWELRY STORE IN A STRIP MALL. I PULLED SLOWLY INTO A PARKING SPACE. AGAIN, MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AS I WAS STOPPING. I ATTEMPTED TO PUT THE CAR INTO PARK. IT SUDDENLY ACCELERATED INTO A LARGE CONCRETE PILLAR, JUMPING THE CURB. AGAIN, MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE. THIS HAPPENED IN A SPLIT SECOND; MY SEAT BELT TIGHTENED AND LOCKED AROUND MY CHEST AND THROAT. I JAMMED MY THUMB, HIT MY LEFT KNEE ON THE STEERING COLUMN AND WAS IN IMMEDIATE CHEST PAIN FROM THE SEAT BELT. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO MY MECHANIC. I WENT TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM AND ALSO SAW MY DOCTOR. I SUFFERED MANY DEEP CONTUSIONS AND IT TOOK SIX WEEKS FOR MY CHEST AND BACK TO HEAL. I AM STILL HAVING NECK AND KNEE PROBLEMS. THIS WAS A HORRIBLY FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD THAT CONCRETE PILLAR NOT STOPPED THE CAR??!! WHAT IF PEOPLE HAD BEEN ON THE SIDEWALK OR JUST A COUPLE OF MORE FEET AND THE CAR WOULD HAVE CRASHED THROUGH THE GLASS FRONT OF THE JEWELRY STORE. TWO CRASHES--$11,000 DAMAGES I STILL FEEL VERY UNSAFE ABOUT MY CAR. WHEN WILL IT HAPPEN AGAIN? *TR

TOYOTA 1999 CAMRY CE/LE/XLE SEDAN 4D DROVE OVER A 4" STREET DEEP 25MPH ALL 4 MOTOR MOUNT BROKEN ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO. HAD A WARRANTY BUT TOYOTA REFUSED TO FIX IT BY SAYING THAT IT WAS AN ACCIDENT. AND INSURANCE COMPANY GEICO REFUSED TO FIX & SAID THAT IT WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT. AT LAST WE HAD TO BUY ANOTHER USED ENGINE TO RUN THE CAR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED A HESITATION IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL THAT CAUSED IT TO STICK WHILE DRIVING. WHEN SHE DEACTIVATES THE CRUISE CONTROL, THE FAILURE WORSENS. RECALL # 01V012000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) APPLIES TO THIS DEFECT, HOWEVER, SHE HAS NOT RECEIVED A NOTICE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY RECALL INFORMATION AND ARE UNABLE TO BE OF ASSISTANCE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 116,000.
PROBLEM WITH 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY: IN TRYING TO PASS A VEHICLE ON A COUNTRY ROAD, THE ENGINE LITERALLY BLEW A HOLE. THE RPM WAS JUST A LITTLE OVER 4,000. THANKFULLY, THERE WAS NO VEHICLE COMING FROM THE OTHER SIDE AND THE OTHER DRIVERS ON MY SIDE QUICKLY SLOWED DOWN TO LET ME COME BACK TO MY SIDE OF THE ROAD. OTHERWISE THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. *TR

SHE PARKED THE VEHICLE AND ONE HALF HOUR LATER, THE POLICE ARRIVED TO FIND THAT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAD EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE. ON MARCH 9, 2007 THE TOYOTA CAMRY ERUPTED INTO A FIRE DURING MY NORMAL DRIVING. ON NOV 28, 2006, I REPAIRED MY VEHICLE AT TOYOTA AUTHORIZED SERVICE STATIN, FITZGERALD TOYOTA, M FOR CHANGING WATER PUMP AND TIMING BELT. *AK MY ODO METER READING WAS AROUND 93.213 MILES AND WITHIN 800 MILES (CLOSE TO 94100) THE VEHICLE MET WITH FIRE ACCIDENT. REPEATED LETTER TOYOTA CORPORATION IS BEING IGNORED AND TOYOTA SERVICE STATION IS YET TO REPLY BACK MY LETTER.
ON THE AFTERNOON OF FEBRUARY 13, 2007 MY WIFE DROVE OUR 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY LE 20 MILES FROM OUR HOUSE TO A GOVERNMENT FACILITY WHERE SHE VOLUNTEERS AS AN INCOME TAX PREPARER FOR THE IRS THROUGH THE CITY OF PHOENIX. AS SHE WAS WAITING TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN INTO THE PARKING LOT OF THE BUILDING THE CAR STALLED BUT SHE MANAGED TO GET IT STARTED AGAIN WITH THE GEAR SHIFT IN NEUTRAL AND PROCEEDED INTO THE PARKING LOT WHERE THE CAR STALLED TWICE AGAIN. SHE WAS ABLE TO PARK THE VEHICLE IN A PARKING SLOT AND SHE WENT INTO WORK. AFTER ABOUT 30 MINUTES MY WIFE WAS CALLED OUT TO THE PARKING LOT WHERE SHE WITNESSED THE CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHING A FIRE COMING FROM THE ENGINE OF THE CAMRY. THE FIRE COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND MELTED THE ENTIRE ENGINE. A PHOENIX POLICE OFFICER WAS PARKED IN THE LOT PRIOR TO THE FIRE AND TOOK A STATEMENT FROM MY WIFE AFTER THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED. WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO OUR RESIDENCE. THE CAMRY HAD ABOUT 65000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND WAS RUNNING IN GOOD CONDITION BEFORE THE FIRE. I HAD ROUTINE MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE A FEW MINOR PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR; THE DRIVER DOOR PUSH BUTTON LOCK, THE STEREO AND THE PARKING BRAKE INDICATOR WERE INTERMITTENT. NO OTHER INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON. THE CAMRY WAS PURCHASED FROM A TOYOTA DEALER IN AUGUST OF 2002 AS A TOYOTA CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE. THIS DEALER DID NOT DISCLOSE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT ENGINE GEL, THE SECURE KEY LOCK AND WIRING HARNESS DEFECTS IN THE VEHICLE. WE RESEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND SIMILAR CASES OF ENGINE FIRES IN 1999 CAMRYS THAT STARTED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND SOME WHILE THEY WERE DRIVING. MY WIFE WAS TRAVELING ALONG ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE LEFT FRONT TIRE. THE TREAD SEPARATION DESTROYED THE LEFT FRONT QUARTER PANEL AND DRIVER SIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR. THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER DRIVABLE AND HAD TO BE TOWED. WE CONTACTED OUR INSURANCE COMPANY TO START A CLAIM FOR THE DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP FOR REPAIR. THE VEHICLE IS BEING REPAIRED AND SHOULD BE READY SOON. I WENT TO THE TIRE STORE WHERE THE TIRES WERE PURCHASED 1.5 YEARS AGO. THE MANAGER MENTIONED THAT IT WAS A DEFECTIVE ISSUE AND CONTACT BRIDGESTONE. I CALLED BRIDGESTONE AND THEY MAILED ME A CLAIMS FORM. BRIDGESTONE IS REQUESTING ME TO SHIP THE TIRE TO THEIR FACILITY FOR INSPECTION. I FEEL THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO SHIP THE TIRE TO THEM AND THEY STILL MAY NOT HONOR THE CLAIM. I HAVE A 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY. I CHANGED MY OIL CONSISTENTLY BEFORE EVERY 2500 MILES OR 3 MONTHS, HOWEVER THE OIL IN MY ENGINE STILL "SLUGGED" OR "GELLED". I VISITED MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT FIXED AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS COMMON AMONGST TOYOTA CAMRY'S AND THAT THEY COULD NOT COVER THE ENGINE DAMAGE FOR ME UNLESS I PROVIDED RECEIPTS AS PROOF THAT I CHANGED MY OIL EVERY 2500 MILES OR 3 MONTHS SINCE THE DAY I PURCHASED THE CAR. I HAD NOT BEEN KEEPING MY RECEIPTS AS MY FIANCE WOULD OFTEN CHANGE MY OIL FOR US. MY OLD ENGINE HAS BEEN REPLACED BUT THE NEW ONE IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY. MY MECHANIC TOLD ME IT'S BECAUSE THE DEFECTIVE PART THAT CAUSED THE ENGINES TO GEL UP HAS NOW BEEN REMOVED FROM REPLACEMENT ENGINES. THERE IS NOW A NOTICEABLE BANGING NOISE COMING FROM MY ENGINE. HOOD LATCH FRAME BOLTING HOOD LATCH TO FRAME OF VEHICLE SHEARED AS A RESULT OF MATERIAL FAILURE CAUSING HOOD TO OPEN, COVERING WINDSHIELD, BRAKING WINDSHIELD, CAUSING HOOD DAMAGE AND ROOF DAMAGE OF VEHICLE. AS I WAS DRIVING MY 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY TO WORK, THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE, AND WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED. THE FIRE WAS PRECEDED BY A LOUD POPPING SOUND, WHICH WAS FOLLOWED BY THE LOSS OF BRAKES/POWER STEERING, ETC. I STRUGGLED TO STEER THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD, COASTING TO A STOP. MEANWHILE, IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE FIRECRACKER-LIKE "POP," SMOKE BEGAN TO POUR INTO THE VEHICLE FROM UNDER THE DASHBOARD, AS WELL AS THROUGH THE VENTS ON THE TOP OF THE DASH. HEAVY SMOKE ALSO BEGAN TO POUR OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE CAR. AS I FINALLY BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A STOP ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, A MOTORIST STOPPED AND HOLLERED TO ME TO GET OUT OF THE CAR IMMEDIATELY AS, HE SAID, THERE WERE FLAMES VISIBLE UNDERNEATH THE CAR. I EXITED THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY, AND WITHIN 3-5 MINUTES IT WAS TOTALLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I DIALED 911 IMMEDIATELY, AND EVEN THOUGH THE INCIDENT OCCURRED WITHIN 1.5 MILES OF THE LOCAL FIRE STATION, THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALLY ENGULFED IN FLAMES BY THE TIME THE FIRE TRUCK ARRIVED. A PENNSYLVANIA STATE TROOPER ARRIVED WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF THE ONSET OF THE EPISODE, MOMENTS AFTER THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED. A TRAFFIC REPORT WAS FILED WITH THE STATE TROOPER. *JB

THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT SHORTLY AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED A PERSISTENT CLANKING SOUND WAS NOTED IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION. AN INDEPENDENT GARAGE DIAGNOSED IT AS A FAILED STRUT WHICH WAS REPLACED, BUT THE NOISE CONTINUED. THIS WAS A COMMON COMPLAINT FOR THE CAR AND SUBSEQUENT MODEL YEARS. THE CONTACT CLAIMED THE TOYOTA DEALERS WERE AWARE OF THE DEFECT WHICH WAS THE RESULT OF A DEFECTIVE STRUT MOUNT DESIGN. HOWEVER, REPAIRS WERE AT CONTACT'S EXPENSE, NOT THE DEALERS. THE WIRING HARNESS POWERING SEVERAL REAR MOUNTED LIGHTS SEVERED COMPLETELY FROM ITS MASTER CABLE. THIS HARNESS RUNS ALONG THE LEFT HINGE OF THE TRUNK LID. THE RESULT IS THAT I LOST MY TAIL LIGHTS, REAR SIDE MARKER LIGHTS, BACKUP LIGHTS AND LICENSE PLATE LIGHT. I CONSIDER THIS A SAFETY ISSUE INASMUCH AS I AM SUBJECT TO A CITATION FOR VIOLATION OF SAFETY REQUIREMENTS. CLIMATE CONTROL UNIT HAS MALFUNCTIONED THREE TIMES IN THE FOUR YEARS WE'VE OWNED THIS VEHICLE. PREVIOUS TWO TIMES IT WOULD SUDDENLY, WITHOUT ADJUSTMENT, BLAST EITHER HOT OR COLD AIR. WE COULD USUALLY STOP IT, BY A LOT OF MANIPULATION OF THE THERMOSTAT KNOB, AND IT WAS "FIXED" BOTH TIMES BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY.
